Banksia Medical & Health celebrates their 40th anniversary this month. We spoke to founder Dr Graham Jacobs about the memorable history of the practice and any plans they may have as they continue to provide health care services to our community.

The practice was established on February 5 in 1979 by local physician and later politician, Dr Graham Jacobs, in a little old house on 47 Dempster Street. To mark their 40th anniversary, we have looked into the history of Banksia Medical to share their story and celebrate a valuable past and bright future for health care in Esperance.

Dr Jacobs was born in Benalla, Victoria. His family were new land farmers and moved to Esperance in 1955 to settle on a farm at Lort River. Dr Jacobs went to Perth to attend high school at Swanbourne High School and went on to study at the University of Western Australia where he was awarded his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. In May 1978, he married his wife, Kathryn, and moved back to Esperance later that same year. The following year, at age 29, Dr Jacobs opened the doors to the practice under his own name, which later became Banksia Medical & Health.

At the time there were only two employees working in the practice, his wife and nurse, Kathyrn Jacobs, and practice manager Betty O’Brien. Starting off with only two patients, Dr Jacob recalls long days staring out the window waiting for the next client potential client to walk through the door. Much to his surprise, the practice grew quickly and in the first six months he was seeing up to 20 patients per day. In 1985, with little room to grow as a business, the ‘little old house’ was torn down and rebuilt into the practice that stands today.

Being a surgery in a rural, isolated town like Esperance, finding doctors committed to moving the distance and sticking around can become quite a struggle. Since the doors opened, Banksia Medical has seen doctors come and go, and one point the surgery held a team of up to eight doctors. Dr Jacob mentioned his continuous effort to encourage students from rural areas to enrol in medical school. He says that doctors, like himself, who come from a rural background are more likely to take up long-term practice in a rural location–a strategy to help fix shortages of medical workers in rural areas like Esperance.

Today, Banksia Medical & Health holds only two general practitioners, Dr Jacobs, who returned to his full-time position in 2017 and Dr Manus Lochner, who joined the team in late 2016. Practice manager, Deborah McLernon, joined the team in 2015 after moving to back to Esperance from Geraldton. The practice has also recently gained a psychologist, Dr Sharon Southall late last year. As the surgery came into its 40th year it saw a full rebrand with a change of name from Banksia Medical Centre to Banksia Medical & Health, complete with a new logo to fit.

The team at Banksia Medical & Health are actively working towards engaging new and existing health services to help bring a larger range of multidisciplinary health care and diagnostic services to Esperance. Talking to Dr Jacobs about the future of Banksia Medical, he seemed eager to get some new plans in motion including potential development of skin treatments. There are also talks of an upgrade of the existing 1980’s building. With more space, Dr Jacobs is keen to open up doors to more possibilities within the surgery that will benefit the community in great ways.

To celebrate 40 years, Banksia Medical & Health invites the Esperance community to at a barbeque lunch from 11.30am on February 5 (the same day doors opened in 1979). In return, they have asked for a gold coin donation with all proceeds going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

During his career, Dr Jacobs practised obstetrics for roughly 25 years and delivered around 50 babies per year. He says it is quite funny having old patients come up to him on the street to introduce their now older child he once delivered. There have even been a few instances of babies he has delivered later becoming pregnant themselves and delivering their babies too. In 2005, he hung up the obstetrician hat as he moved to part-time, a decision he made to free up some time so he could run for politics.

are you drinking too much?

Over the silly season, there is an increase in social activities, parties, gigs, family shindigs, end of year work blowouts and backyard barbies. And while it can be a wonderful time of year, it can also be a time of excess, especially when it comes to alcohol. Many of us ‘grown-ups’ enjoy drinking a few alcoholic beverages here and there, but how much is too much? It’s a common question, especially when you’re trying to determine if your own drinking habits are worrying. Here are a few things to consider.

Do the majority of your plans involve alcohol?

Do you feel pressured to drink in social situations?

Whether it’s Christmas lunch, a day at the beach, game night at Emma’s or the basketball grand final, old-mate, booze, consistently bags an invite. Alcohol somehow becomes the key ingredient in any gettogether and you start to lose sight of what you were doing in the first place.

According to the Alcohol Think Again website, research tells us that even when people intend to drink responsibly, it can be difficult to stick to this plan because getting drunk is often an accepted norm, there is often social pressure to drink and the setting makes it easy to drink large amounts.

And, sometimes it can be difficult to find social environments where alcohol is not present.

What you can do: Do something else or drink something else. Instead of only catching up for a drink, you could always watch a movie, grab a coffee or catch up over a game of tennis. Something that doesn’t necessarily make you feel compelled to drink.

Instead of always going for a grab of an ice-cold beer, try a bottle of kombucha instead. The nonalcoholic alternatives are endless.

What you can do: Hit up your non-drinking (or minimaldrinking) mates. Invite them out so you’re not the only one not drinking in the group. When you need to tell friends that you can’t drink or need to drink less, prepare a few standard responses – this may be helpful if people are bugging you to drink more.

What is a standard drink?

Have you ever told yourself you were going to have only a drink or two, and before you know it you’ve downed four? When you’re having a good time, it can be hard to keep track of how many drinks you’ve had–we are all guilty of it. But not knowing your limits can have dangerous consequences. It is important to understand what a standard drink is so that when you are drinking you can manage how much alcohol you consume.

In Australia, your standard drink is any drink containing 10 grams of alcohol, regardless of glass size or alcohol type. And because alcoholic beverages are sold and served in many different sizes, this can make it difficult to know how many standard drinks are in each drink you consume. Whilst you’ve been thinking you’ve only had one, that large wine glass of red you’ve been pouring on the reg could actually be four.

What you can do: Rather than having a few drinks before eating when out to dinner, wait until dinner is served and aim to only have two standard drinks. If going to a friends’ house, take less alcohol with you then you usually would and make every second drink a non-alcoholic one.

Do you reach for a drink after a long day at work?

It’s a routine plenty of us get stuck in. You come home from a stressful day at work, kick the shoes off and pour yourself a big ol’ glass of wine.

Sure, this is a nice way to relax and mark the end of a day, however, when that one drink turns into a whole bottle, things can start to get out of control.

What you can do: Change your after-work routine. Start putting the kettle on when you get home, instead of going straight to the fridge.

Distract yourself by performing some yoga poses or taking the dog for a walk down the beach–physical exercise can help relieve tension and relax your mind.

In the third century AD, during the reign of Roman Emperor Claudius Gothicus, a priest by the name of Valentinus was arrested, tortured, and then beheaded. His crime was attempting to convert a nobleman (or perhaps even the notoriously cranky Gothicus himself) to Christianity. According to legend, he also restored the sight of a blind girl, and probably officiated the marriages of Roman soldiers, who were forbidden to marry at the time. There may have even been two martyred priests called Valentinus, one of whom may have died on February 14. Historians aren’t too sure.

This is the surprisingly gory history of St. Valentine, patron saint of roses, chocolates, and making you feel bad if you don’t have a boyfriend in February.

Before everyone jumps in to correct me, St. Valentine is, in fact, the patron saint of lovers, epileptics, and beekeepers.

So if your lover is a beekeeper or an epileptic, perhaps double up on the Valentine’s Day celebrations. What else can you do to celebrate this day? Well, you could always visit the Basilica of Santa Maria in Rome, to visit what is supposedly St. Valentine’s skull, artfully decorated with flowers.

The celebration of Valentine’s Day probably sprang up as an alternative to the pagan Roman festival of Lupercalia. Some of the rituals around this festival celebrating fertility included matching up random couples–kind of like an ancient version of Married at First Sight. It also featured young men running around in goatskins, nearly naked, whipping at women to supposedly enhance their fertility. How ‘bout it. In the 14th century, Chaucer popularised Valentine’s Day as a day for lovers and people began to write love notes signed ‘Your Valentine’. One of these earliest remaining notes from the 15th century was written by Charles d’Orleans to his wife. It reads, ‘I am already sick of love, my very gentle Valentine’. While Charles probably meant ‘lovesick’, you could try writing a love note telling your lover that you are ‘sick of love’. It’s sure to be a winner.

This is where you have to really put in some effort if you want to keep the magic alive. Take some tips from everyone’s favourite Aussie Romeo, and try a bit of Darryl Kerrigan romance. ‘Whaddya call this, luv?

Icecream? Yeah, but it’s the way you do it.’ Make sure you put in the effort to keep yourself looking good for your partner. Maybe put on your matching tracksuits and go for a bit of a Kath and Kel power-walk. Being a foxymoron takes work, you know.

Here are some don’ts: don’t text your ex. No really, it’s a bad idea and it will end with you crying into a tub of ice-cream. And do not, whatever you do, attempt to strike up a romance with a potential partner on this day. Is that really what you want your love story to be? Trust me, your future kids won’t think it’s cute. They’ll roll their eyes and swear off Valentine’s Day forever. Do you think that’s what St. Valentine would have wanted

So go out for a romantic picnic in a special location (maybe not Lover’s Cove, there will be ten other couples there already). Make a home cooked dinner. Or even write a love note. Just don’t put it all over Facebook. You don’t want ‘In love forever...’ coming up in your memories every year once you’ve broken up, do you?

On the other hand, by this time you should really know what your partner wants on a special occasion. Trust me, it’s not flowers or greeting cards. It’s probably just a bit of a quiet lie down with that book they started months ago. Or chocolates. Let’s say Ferrero Rochers, for example.

Single on Valentine’s Day? Ah, this is the best!

You can make lots of comments about how commercialised the day is, and tally up just how much money you’re saving on cheesy greeting cards and overpriced flowers. Make plans to treat yourself to a luxurious bath or a glass of wine and some choccies. You could phone up your single friends, and get the lads around for an evening of, I don’t know, what is it that blokes do when they hang out?

Talk about football and get pedicures? Or go out for an evening of cocktails and dancing, and drunkenly tell all the girls in the bathrooms how much you love their outfits.

Aw, aren’t you guys cute? Now I know you’re already reaching for the credit card, but before you do, make sure you do your homework. The best kind of V-day gifts are thoughtful ones. A bunch of her favourite kind of native flowers. A jumper in a colour that really brings out his eyes. A new puppy. Me personally, I like chocolates.

Gardening & mental health There is not many of us that don’t enjoy being in or having a beautiful garden. Research has time and time again proven that gardening has a positive effect on our mental health. Gardening not only gives us a sense of responsibility but also allows us to be nurturers. It doesn’t matter if we are old or young, male or female, disabled or suffering from mental health problems, we are all equal when working with plants and can contribute to making a difference in the space that surrounds us.

Gardening keeps us connected with nature and other living things and often can be an escape from people, especially when they are driving you a bit crazy. ‘Flowers are restful to look at. They have no emotions or conflict.’ said Freud. Tending to plants allows us to tap into the carefree part of ourselves with no deadlines, mortgage or bills to pay. Spending time outdoors in the garden helps us to be in the present moment and releases happy hormones. We are reminded of the cycle of life and the miracle of nature.

Happy 2019 fellow surfers and hope you all score some fun times this year at the beach. Esperance lack of waves leaves us all willing up a proper sandbank with a decent clean groundswell and offshore to the likes of which we will probably never see. Perhaps this can be overcome with a road trip or an overseas surf adventure or maybe just move somewhere else. No, Esperance is home and we work and play here most of the year but a trip away for time off can be awesome.

Southern Australia lights up in autumn so road tripping might be your thing, or a trip out to the Pacific this month could be cool. Overseas trips in winter or up north.

Dream on! That’s expensive on the funds, so unless you’ve got the coin or can’t be bothered at least autumn is as good as it gets here. Hopefully, by summers end there will be some sort of beach break being blessed with offshores and swell. Westies, I’m sure, will be the scene with carpark chatter aplenty. Hmmm, the same old thing.

I think I need a road trip to get me back in the groove, as the best thing about time away is coming home.

How did you first start playing music?

I was given a guitar for my 9th birthday and never looked back. Regarding Blue Child Collective, it’s a project I started solo back in 2014 and has evolved since then into a 5 piece band and many many collaborators.

Where did your band name come from ?

How many times have you been to Esperance?

We usually visit once or twice a year, and have played in Espy for the last 4 years this project has been going for, though this will be the first time with the full 5 piece band!

Your new album ‘Wake Up To The Sound’ has a lot of fun and funky songs. How does it compare to your past albums and what was the inspiration behind this one?

It’s very much an A & B side, with the front half made up of mostly funk and groove tunes, and the back half delving into soul, bossa and folk. Compared to our last 3 records though, we’ve definitely added a few carriages to the funk train. The concept for the album revolves around the idea that the universe is made up of energy or matter vibrating - which all produce frequencies, and that humans have the ability to shape our worlds and lives with our thoughts, words and actions; frequencies which physically affect those existing around us.

Wake Up To The Sound is about opening up to and applying this concept to our own lives, and we’ll have a documentary coming out next month which goes into this in more detail.

We’ve been privileged to share the stage with Xavier Rudd, The Cat Empire, Sticky Fingers, San Cisco and many more - each one a big step up and teaching us a lot.

What are you listening to at the moment?

We’re on tour around the country so there’s been plenty pumping through the stereo in the tour bus! Apart from the jazz wormhole we’ve gone down, we’ve been spending some good time with old mates Stevie Wonder, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Caravana Sun, Band of Frequencies and Afro Dizzi Act. What’s your favourite musical instrument that doesn’t feature in your band?

I would have said Bansuri (Indian Flute) if you’d asked me before this album, but for something we haven’t featured yet I’d have to go for Trombone - all we need to complete our horn section.

What do you have planned for the rest of 2019 after the album launch tour?

We’ve got a few festivals and an NZ tour lined up in March before dropping a new single in May and heading up north on a regional tour.

Beyond that, you’ll have to stay tuned.

It came from a moment of insight I had; this idea that we’re all humans hanging out on a little blue planet floating through space, and that we have a lot more in common with each other than we often believe. So Blue Child Collective is basically another name for humans; the writing and songs themselves mostly geared towards highlighting our common ground, reminding us of our humanity and promoting a #cultureofconnection with ourselves, each other and the world which we are a part of.

Music is one of those generic obstacles we dwindle over through headphones or a car stereo, or choreograph a few summer playlists and attend a few more local gigs in order to give ourselves character. It’s the best. Peers ask you who your favourite musicians are and refuse to take your feedback home because they’ve already decided they’re the pie-in-the-sky from the 110th time they’ve slain ‘ToTo’ by Africa, onwards. They want to define you by how much illicit content you listen to or what era you’d love to be reborn in because of it. I’m not talking about the kind of music every second middle-aged mum listens to in order to relive their youth, nor the artists who milk their satisfaction from making it.

I’m talking about the music that flips your stomach, tweaks nerves. Music that checks in to whether your soul is still in the hands of the devil and leaves you thinking not just about what your funeral ‘song’ might be but the kind of music your subconscious plays out in your dreams.

I pay respect to live music, the music my dad listens to and soundtracks so I can soundtrack everything. I pay more respect to the level of creativity and otherworldly attempts musicians and composers pull-through to relive that ‘feel’ their frontal lobes went through that one time, in just three minutes. We should pay just as much, if not more to those who keep this alive.

We all have quick nicknames for many of our familiar faces in town. ‘Kyza’ swings through a crowded event scene or fanged loudly across the street. Quick, co-ordinated and a nice ring, we find we’ve mastered these two syllables just as well as basic grammar and our ABC’s. Kyron Smithson has pulled his finger out for our community. We are, in a way, in debt to his overwhelming support and unconditional love for every person and their left-hand friend. Speak of the devil he’s standing right in front of me.

Many of Kyron’s outside musical influences started filling out the crevices of his to-be future musical career from a young age, perhaps a little later than the rest of us.

Kyron’s first experiences with the stuff took place in his parent’s car from the stereo in small doses and then later, via the vocal cords of Neil Diamond and Johnny Cash. His earliest memory of ‘good’ music was on one sunny Australia Day afternoon when he copped the tail end of one of Triple J’s earlier Hottest 100’s. The top three songs by Powderfinger, Custard and Kyron’s all-time favourite band Tool. Throughout his schooling, Kyron was particularly proud of his involvement in school musicals where he also had his first go learning guitar and may or may not have starred in the Sound of Music. He left that fact really open. Back then he rarely got a hang of instruments first go and settled into the familiar feel for university instead. Here he spent five years studying tourism management with a minor in marketing and then the following six working on his family’s farm. Steadfast, driven by experience and with a strong sense of wrong from right, Kyron threw himself headfirst into the idea of representing musicians in an aim to develop a better understanding of the talent that just happened to come so naturally to him and many Esperance locals.

While down at Down Town coffee shop and between jobs, I grilled the man some of the big questions too. I did come prepared for once and busied over them in-between conversation but didn’t interrupt anything so before my short-term memory kicked in, bolted home to the essentials: pen and paper. One thing that stuck out like a saw thumb between topics, lingering over scenarios, goal-setting and action; Kyron’s tolerance with people. Yes, us. He has to deal with us every day, all at arm’s length, he sees the bigger picture and can play out the consequences in his head before making better actions. A sure sign of patience. This includes palming out creative constructive criticism to the many musicians he represents. Kyron doesn’t shy away from the idea and quite enjoys handing people valuable feedback. Hard evidence proves that Kyron works words of wisdom throughout everything he contributes to. People mistake him for being busy when really he’s focused.

Kyron means well and has full respect for the development of musical know-how. It’s different for everyone but can be a joint communal effort from all. With encouragement: an individualised stage presence, different from your neighbour but complimentary to Esperance’s ever-evolving music taste.

You may or may not have noticed but man-of-many-talents also takes on The Bridge in every issue and has a knack for great writing well worth killing a few brain cells for or reading allowed in the shower with you, yourself and possible friend.

I’m the left-handed friend but I’ve got two of them so am still yet to master his initial handshake and general jive each time we see each other. Kyron knows the lingo and is riddled with words urban dictionary is still halfhearted to understand. It’s fantastic. Both people-people, we can chew the crutch off a low-flying duck from talking too much at our heart’s desire. They usually are. Kyron has that poetic license to write incredible music solo or alongside band members Joe Franzone and Matt Cooper.

Everyone is familiar with Grand Casual but I really want to talk about how Kyron, unknown to him, is an ambassador and ideal inspiration to those who wish to take on the world by their own terms. Be their own boss.

Kyron has a great sense of community. Little did he know where he was going to stand 6 years down the track, today. But that’s just proof there’s no need to look too far in the future. It only puts off what can get done today. Pegleg or two left feet, Kyron has taken the first step for many musicians around town, followed the south-west coastline and on, onto Perth where he’s played numerous times with band Grand Casual. Fuel money or lack-of never got in his way. “The most successful musicians are the ones who work the longest and hardest.” It’s true Kyz, all of this goes without saying for anyone within any creative industry or those with any driven goal, give it a go. For those who want to get the job done properly; prepare to sacrifice blood, sweat and tears for a worthy cause.

exceptional. No true bevy of fans though, he must be damn disappointed, or is he waiting for more people to watch the film. I thought to myself, a life-altering event no doubt has the potential to change the way you view the world, though to set out with that goal in mind likely draws the curtains on something that should happen organically. Why rush it, persevere and if that life-changing perspective takes years to manifest and is the result of thousands of small impacts, I think that’s just damn fine.

It’s a Friday afternoon and I’m hurriedly squaring away bits and pieces before going camping for a couple of nights. Without a shadow of a doubt I’ll forget to pack something, but hey that’s half the fun, a kind of camping roulette. Watched a cracking movie last night American Animals, a true accounting of four young guys in Pennsylvania who in 2016 orchestrated a heist that targeted some damn expensive books. I won’t say much more other than it’s a great movie, though it did get me thinking. One of the central characters in was an aspiring artist and had developed the belief that to become truly great he would need to experience a life-altering event.

As we all do at the movie’s completion I searched for this real-life character, expecting to see thousands of Instagram likes. He was there on the world wide web easy as to find and his artwork was rather

Campbell Taylor, 1898

The Taylor story begins with John Tailyour, born in Scotland in 1743.

He was a merchant who travelled to Kingston, Jamaica, and became heavily involved in the slave trade.

He was in business with his cousin, the very wealthy Simon Taylor.

Tailyour, who later simplified his name to Taylor, had a ‘common law’ wife called Polly Graham who was an African slave. He had three children with her, and later petitioned for Polly’s freedom (she was ‘owned’ by his cousin Simon) then sent her and the children to England, where the children were educated.

In 1792, a very wealthy Taylor returned to Scotland, and a year later, he married Mary McCall.

John and Mary had 10 children, including Patrick Taylor, the eighth child, born in 1807. John died in 1815, Mary died in 1818, and Patrick was left in the care of his

older siblings. Patrick was in poor health and apparently decided to migrate to Australia to see if the dry climate might suit him better.

He sailed on the James Pattison in 1834, meeting fellow traveller Mary Yates Bussell on board. Mary was one of the Bussell family that first settled south of Perth, in the area of Busselton, which was named for the family. Patrick and Mary married in 1837.

Patrick settled in King George Sound, which was to later become Albany. Patrick purchased a cottage which had originally been built in 1832 and is still standing today, the oldest surviving dwelling in Western Australia.

This cottage is now Patrick Taylor Cottage museum, located on Duke Street in Albany. Patrick also bought land on the lower Kalgan River, which he called Candyup. Patrick and Mary had

three children in quick succession, Margaret (Maggie), Catherine, and John. Then disaster struck – Patrick learned that his agent back in Scotland had swindled him out of most of his wealth. This change in fortunes made Patrick bitter and resentful, and he spent much of the rest of his life as a recluse at his property Candyup. Campbell was the next son to be born, in 1842, followed by two more daughters, Christina and Frances.

In 1865, Andrew Dempster visited Albany, and was a guest at Candyup. Perhaps this visit inspired the young Campbell Taylor to travel east, as he took over a lease at the Oldfield River in 1867, and moved a flock of sheep there. In 1869, Campbell’s older brother John was falsely accused of stealing a horse. Despite efforts on behalf of his family to clear his name, John fled to India. Even

though he was eventually cleared of the theft, John never returned to Albany, settling instead in Victoria. Campbell, who had spent a lot of time exploring as far as Eucla, gave up his Oldfield river lease and applied for a lease at Thomas River in 1870. He moved his sheep to Thomas River, around 120 km from the Dempster brothers’ fledgling settlement at Esperance.

In the 1870s, Campbell and the Dempster brothers were both expanding their leaseholds. They were in heated competition, each taking up adjacent leases of 30,000 acres. This expansion came to an end for Campbell in 1877 when his father died. Campbell inherited Candyup, and for a time, he tried to run both properties, even though they were separated by around 600 kilometres. In 1887, the pressure of running both properties became too much, and Campbell put Lynburn station on the market. By this stage, Lynburn and Campbell’s other runs totalled around 135,000 acres. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there were no takers for the remote property, even though it was good sheep country. Campbell’s mother, Mary, died in 1887, and his sisters helped to run the property at Candyup.

In 1900, Campbell and Charlotte were travelling from Lynburn to

Esperance to cast their votes in the referendum on whether Western Australia should join the Federation of states. Charlotte was also able to vote, as women in WA were given the right to vote in 1899. Tragically, they were never able to cast their votes, as the buggy that they were travelling in overturned, close to Alexander Bay. Charlotte and the Aboriginal boy who was travelling with them were thrown clear, but Campbell was badly injured. The boy was sent to Esperance for help, arriving after midnight. Despite the bad weather, several men set out immediately in a small cutter, arriving at Alexander Bay the next morning. Campbell was carried on a stretcher to the boat, taken to Esperance, and then transported to the hospital in Albany, where he died of his injuries. He was 58 years old.

Charlotte continued to run the property at Lynburn for some time, then retired to Melbourne, where she became well known for the newspaper articles she wrote about her life on the remote station. The buildings at Lynburn still stand today on property that is owned by the Grewar family.

Campbell built a settlement on his new lease that he called Lynburn Station, probably with the help of the local Aboriginal people.

His father had maintained good relationships with the Aboriginal people who lived near Candyup, encouraging them to stay around the station, and paying them much more than the usual going rate for their work on the property.

Unlike some of Esperance’s early settlers, Campbell maintained good relationships with the local Aboriginal people of the area as well. Campbell also befriended many of the early pioneers of the area, assisting the Brooks family and the Ponton brothers to settle in the area around Israelite Bay. In 1884, a young German sailor Heinrich (Henry) Dimer and his crewmate jumped ship just out of Albany. Campbell found them and helped them to hide from the

search parties, as jumping ship was strictly forbidden. Dimer then went with Campbell to Lynburn, where he worked as a shepherd.

Dimer eventually took up a lease himself at Nanambinia. In 1867, Edward Dempster married Maggie Taylor, Campbell’s older sister. In 1883, Campbell married Charlotte Gresham, a governess who was related to the Dempsters.

ESPERANCE WELLBEING ONLINE SURVEY The Esperance community are encouraged to participate in an online Esperance Wellbeing Survey and be in the running to win a $500 Woolworths food voucher. The survey opens on February 10 and runs for two weeks. It is open to all Esperance residents over the age of 18 years and will take around 20 minutes to complete. Funding for the survey comes from the Alcohol and Drug Foundation and is part of the endorsed Esperance Alcohol and Other Drug Management Plan 2018 – 2021. Method 1. Halve and chop the peeled tomatoes. Sprinkle with salt and leave overnight.

2. Put in a large pan with all their juices and the rest of the ingredients except the vinegar, then bring to the boil, stirring until the sugar has dissolved.

3. Simmer for 1½ hours, then add the vinegar and bring back to the boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring often, until the mixture is thick and pulpy and you can see the base of the pan when you draw a spoon through it.

4. Make sure your jars are sterilised (see know how). Using a clean jam funnel, fill the jars right to the necks. Wipe the outside and rim of each, then cover the chutney with a waxed disk, wax-side down, making sure it lies flat. Screw the lids on tightly.
