For kids, few holidays are more anticipated than Halloween. The chance to dress up in costume and patrol the neighborhood with friends while collecting treats is the highlight of many a child’s autumn. For parents, anticipation is replaced by anxiety. While kids are out trick-or-treating, parents may be home or at work hoping their kids are safe and sound. Because Halloween is so popular among kids, it’s hard for parents to forbid trick-or-treating. But parents should instruct kids on the following tips to ensure this Halloween is as safe as it is fun. • Strangers’ homes are off limits. Make sure kids know they should never enter the home of a stranger, no matter how friendly or welcoming that stranger may seem. • There’s no going it alone. Kids should not be permitted to go out alone. When trick-or-treating, kids should always be accompanied not only by their friends, but there must be at least one adult chaperone

present at all times. Parents should get together several weeks before Halloween to determine who will chaperone, where kids will be trick-or-treating and during what hours. • Stay close to home. Kids should stay in their own neighborhood and only visit homes of neighbors they know. Advise kids to steer clear of homes whose doors are hidden from street view. Chaperones should accompany kids to the front door if visibility from the street is poor. • Choose safe costumes. Kids should wear costumes made of light colored material. If a child insists on a favorite costume that uses largely dark material, attach reflective tape to the costume so your favorite reveler is easily visible to motorists during twilight and nighttime hours when it’s not always easy for drivers to see. • No toy guns. Toy guns are just asking for trouble, as many of today’s replicas are easily

Trick or Treat:

Trick or Treat everywhere will be Oct. 31. Friday, Nov. 1

Fright Night at Charlotte Valley Central School, 15611 State Highway 23, Davenport. Trick or treating throughout the school and Haunted Hallway from 5:45 until 6:30 p.m. followed by a kids Halloween movie.

confused with the real thing. Play it safe and choose costumes that aren’t accessorized with toy guns. • Bring a flashlight along. Night falls quickly in late October, so kids and chaperones alike should carry a flashlight to improve their visibility and make them more visible to passing motorists. • Stick to the sidewalks. Trick-or-treaters should stick to the sidewalks and always cross the street at corners. Don’t walk in the street, and never walk between parked cars when crossing the street, as it’s especially

difficult for motorists to anticipate pedestrians walking or running from behind parked cars into the street. • Be wary of masks. Many masks restrict a child’s vision, so look for one that provides sufficient visibility. If a child’s favorite mask is low on visibility, make children agree to remove their mask when crossing the street. Parents understandably worry when kids go trick-or-treating. But a few simple safety lessons shared with children can ensure everyone gets home safe.

Barbara Hubbell and Lori Ballard’s Local Photography at the CWC in Margaretville

The public is welcome to view local photographs by Barbara Hubbell and Lori Ballard at the Catskill Watershed Corporation, (CWC) 905 Main Street Margaretville, weekdays from 8 to 4:30 (closed Nov. 28-29). The show will be up until Dec. 20. All of their photographs are for sale. Lori (Hendricks) Ballard grew up in Margaretville and graduated with the class of 1976. She married Ernest Ballard in 1984 and made their home in the Denver/Vega area. She remembers in her youth, her mother gave her an old “Brownie” camera to practice with, so she took it to school one day. Lori has owned about five Nikon camera’s over the years and has done various things with her photos, such as entering contests, and sharing with others on a National Geographic website called “Your shot”, which is open to anyone around the globe. Lori took a photography course in college back in the film days when they had to develop their own film in a dark room. Since stepping up to a DSLR camera about three years ago, Lori has taken a couple of online courses and has also learned from watching “YouTube” tips and tutorials on photography. Even though she enjoys different types of photography, her biggest passion is wildlife and landscape. When she’s outside with her camera, rather in her backyard or driving around, that’s her happy place! Barbara Hubbell, has lived in the Catskills for almost 40 years. She’s originally from the Syracuse area. She went to college in Delhi where she fell in love with the beautiful Catskills. She saw the moon rise and knew then she wasn’t leaving. Barbara got a teaching job at Margaretville Central School where she taught for over 30 years Barbara was then retired and started the next chapter of her life. Barbara married Rudd Hubbell about a year ago and has

Fall is the perfect time to make space-saving upgrades to your house. For example, consider swapping out a traditional swinging door for a smooth-gliding, wall-mounted sliding door. A sliding door can add up to 14 square feet of floor space, which allows for more room to spread out toys and games, and give a more spacious feel to nearly any room. They also allow for more flexibility in furniture arrangements, which can turn even the smallest nook in your house into a cozy space. It's easy to do with an option like Johnson Hardware's Soft-Close Wall-Mount Sliding Door Hardware, which can be used with virtually any metal or wood door from 1-inch to 1 3/4-inches thick, up to 48 inches wide and weighing up to 200 pounds. The U.S.made hardware gently slows the door's travel speed to softly pull it into the fully open or fully closed position and works like a cabinet door closer, enabling doors to open and close quietly and securely. It also prevents door slamming and pinched fingers, as well as reducing door operational noise. The built-in satin or bronze finish fascia can give a warm decorative detail to a room while the smooth-rolling door hardware and track exceed ANSI standards, meaning it can successfully complete 100,000 opening and closing cycles, with adjustable door guides, tricycle hangers and adjustable track stops. The jump-proof aluminum box track is available in lengths up to 96 inches for single doors and up to 192 inches for double doors. Installing wall-mount sliding door hardware in a playroom, or nearly any other room in your house, can be an easy yet high-impact improvement that reduces space constraints while adding warmth, functionality and visual appeal. This time of year, family life can get a little messy. School schedules and sports activities mix with work commitments, and before long the house is as cluttered as the calendar. Fall is the perfect time of year to recommit to an organized household so you can keep the chaos contained. With these tips, you can make small changes to help you get organized and stay that way. Embrace routines. The idea of dedicating large chunks of time to organizing and tidying the house can be overwhelming. However, making time to clean as you progress through the day can help control clutter and keep the time commitment more manageable. Commit to cleaning up the kitchen after dinner each night. Set expectations for kids to pick up their rooms before bed. Before long, routines become productive habits that

make a visible difference. Purge the excess. Over time, nearly everyone collects too much stuff, and clutter is often more an indication of too much volume than poor organization. Items are purchased to replace outdated things, but the old pieces sometimes don't actually get discarded. Getting control of your clutter starts with eliminating the things you no longer want or need. A good strategy is to create piles of items: keep, sell, donate and discard. Create a drop zone. In most homes, the entryway is a catchall for family belongings that get shed with each pass through the door. It's convenient to have shoes, coats, backpacks and other essentials ready to grab as you head out, so instead of fighting the inevitable jumble, find a way to organize it. A stylish drop zone using ClosetMaid's Space Creations organiz-

ers is a solution that attractively contains all those essentials. The line includes a range of shelving kits, complementing drawers, baskets, rods and more so you can customize the storage unit to your exact space and needs. Avoid junk piles. Nearly every home has at least one junk pile, drawer or even room. In most cases, the reason is that the contents are a mishmash of items that don't really have any place else to go. Make a point to identify ways to create order, whether it's adding drawer inserts to contain all the odds and ends or buying a standing file to capture bills and mail. Be mindful about use. When you're on a mission to eliminate excess clutter, it can be tempting to go overboard putting things away. It's important to be realistic about where you store the things you need and err on the side of keeping the things you use regularly within reach. This may mean getting creative about how you organize or even adding new storage containers or furniture, but remember being organized is only helpful if it's also practical. Despite the comfort and convenience it affords, modern society is contributing to a vanishing relationship with the natural environment. However, there are plenty of ways to bring nature indoors to reap the benefits of an earthy connection inside your home. According to a survey commissioned by the Velux Group, a gap is growing between the time Americans spend outdoors and the time they'd like to spend in nature. In the United States, 63% of survey participants said they average one hour or less a week in nature, but 88% agreed they would like to spend more time. In addition, the majority of respondents said they believe nature, daylight and fresh air have a positive impact on stress levels, and most also agreed those factors have a positive impact on mental well-being. "Exposure to nature such as trees, plants and views of open spaces has been found to improve the cognitive ability to focus and read social cues," said Arie Greenleaf, associate professor of counseling at Seattle University. "Even ADHD symptoms in children are mitigated by views of and interactions with nature in a host of different ways. Worker productivity,

how people feel about the work they do and the level of engagement, improves with a view of nature." Despite ample research demonstrating the benefits, the study revealed a common theme, with 85% of participants believing they spent more time in nature as children than children do today. That's a trend that translates into adult habits, too. "With work and family responsibilities, we can't always fit spending time outside into our busy schedules, effectively making us the indoor generation," said Peter Foldbjerg, head of Daylight, Energy and Indoor Climate for The Velux Group. "One thing we can do is improve how our homes connect to nature: From houseplants and nature-inspired art to skylights and screened porches, there are a wide variety of options for creating nature connections in the place we spend most of our time - our homes." Learn how to bring more nature into your home with these decorating and design ideas: Houseplants Living plants not only add a touch of the outdoors, but they also help clean the air inside your home. In smaller spaces, even a few pots of herbs

can add a refreshing touch of nature. If flat surfaces and floor space are at

Sunshine and fresh air Whether it's from windows or skylights, bringing natural light and fresh air inside can keep your space fresh and inviting. There are scientifically proven correlations between natural light exposure and mood, as well as your body's ability to maintain its circadian rhythm. Refreshing the air in your home can help eliminate volatile organic compounds, pet dander and microparticles from cooking and cleaning. If your home is lacking in natural light, a skylight may be easier to add than a window, and skylights bring in twice as much light as vertical windows; their angle allows more of the sun's rays to reach farther into the room. Some skylights, including many offered by Velux, also offer venting options that can contribute to cleaner air. Nature-inspired art Studies have shown that simply viewing photos or

Mold and mildew are not only unsightly, but unhealthy. These fungi grow readily in damp areas and are found in the air breathed both indoors and outside. If left unaddressed, mold and mildew can threaten the health of a home’s inhabitants. Mildew is a type of mold that remains relatively flush with the surface it grows on. Other molds can grow puffy in appearance. Molds serve the purpose of destroying organic materials, but in high amounts, these microorganisms can cause respiratory problems, sinus congestion, throat irritation, headaches, and other issues, particularly when mold grows unchecked indoors, says Better Homes and Gardens. As a result, it is essential to address mold before it becomes problematic. According to Polygon, a drying technology and temporary climate solutions company, the wet season in winter is when molds often grow and expand. Mold can break down the integrity and strength of the surfaces where it grows. Homeowners can employ the following strategies to prevent mold growth. • Keep all surfaces clean, using proper cleaning products. Diluted bleach solutions are highly effective at killing microscopic fungi, viruses and bacteria. • Reduce moisture and humidity by ensuring sufficient air cir-

culation in rooms, particularly bathrooms and kitchens. An exhaust fan will help remove moisture quickly. • Fabrics covered in mildew that can be laundered should be carefully removed and washed in chlorine bleach and hot water. An oxygen bleach product also can be effective. • Invest in a dehumidifier that can reduce moisture in the home in problem areas, such as

damp basements or garages. • Fix plumbing leaks as soon as possible. • Remove damp leaves and snow from areas around the foundation of the home. Ensure that gutters and downspouts are clear of debris and can shuttle water away from the house effectively. • Replace cracked or defective mortar in basements. • Make sure all seals on windows and doors

are not compromised and are in good working condition. • Be sure an HVAC in-line humidifier is adjusted to the right setting and isn’t pumping too much moisture into the heated air; otherwise, the added humidity can contribute to mold. • If there is a flood or water infiltrates a home in other ways, hire a professional service to help clean and dry the home effectively. Mold and mildew are problematic, but with diligence they can be kept at bay.

Connect with Nature at Work If you work outside your home, at least a third of your day may have you stuck inside an office. Make your work environment more appealing with these ideas that let you embrace nature even while you're on the clock. • Incorporate natural life with a desk plant. You may feel more refreshed by that touch of green, and it helps clean the air around you, too. • Find the sunlight. Today's offices actively pro-

mote free-range working, so find a sofa near a window and get your best work done there. Or spend a few hours working outside each day. If your office design is behind the times, take a daily walk outside during your lunch break. • Surround yourself with natural materials. Transform your desk-scape with a bamboo monitor stand, stone smartphone holder or woven seagrass inbox. • Trick the senses with natural soundscapes. Earbuds are a must in today's open-plan offices. Instead of playing music, escape with nature-inspired tunes like rain, wind in the trees or forest birds. * Select art influenced by Mother Nature. Decorate with nature-inspired art, whether it's photos of landscapes or a sunflower print. #14777 Source: Velux

ARIES – MAR 21/APR 20

LIBRA – SEPT 23/OCT 23

TAURUS – APR 21/MAY 21

SCORPIO – OCT 24/NOV 22

Aries, this week may start off somewhat unbalanced. Work may be demanding more of you, and you’re finding it tough to even out the field. By midweek you’ll regain control.

Libra, after you get through an exciting event, life may slow down for a little while. But you can find plenty of ways to infuse some excitement into your days.

Make the necessary changes in your life to get back on target, Taurus. These goals may run the gamut from fitness to career. Put the future in focus.

You cannot seem to focus your attention on one thing for more than a few minutes, Scorpio. Random thoughts, however distracting, can inspire new ideas.

You may be inspired to do something creative but don’t know where to focus your attention just yet, Gemini. Look to Sagittarius as a good source of inspiration.

Sagittarius, you may like to tackle projects all by yourself, but sometimes letting someone else get the job done frees up opportunities to recharge your batteries.

Cancer, this week you may be unable to keep everything as organized as you would like. Take a cue from someone you know is always organized.

It may finally be time to get serious about getting out in the job market once more, Capricorn. Whether you’re looking for a new job or returning after a hiatus, retool your résumé.

GEMINI – MAY 22/JUN 21

HELP WANTED

LEO – JUL 23/AUG 23

Take control of a situation that comes to light this week, Leo. No one seems willing or able to grab the reins, but you can be an excellent leader in this situation.

VIRGO – AUG 24/SEPT 22

Expand your social circles and you may meet some influential people, Virgo. This can help spread the word about your stellar reputation and open doors to opportunities.

SAGITTARIUS – NOV 23/DEC 21

CAPRICORN – DEC 22/JAN 20

AQUARIUS – JAN 21/FEB 18

While success brings you many things, it can feel lonely at the top, Aquarius. Surround yourself with associates who can be a sounding board and offer assistance.

PISCES – FEB 19/MAR 20

Take time to listen more and speak less, Pisces. Doing so allows you to make a better assessment of what those around you need and want.
