by Vicky Klukkert After last year’s washout, members of the Delaware Valley Agricultural Society (DVAS), the board that oversees the operation of the Delaware County Fair, are hoping for nicer weather for this year’s fair. Last year’s attendance was 69,590 for the week, which was lower than previous years, however, it rained almost every day making the parking lot, barns and some vendor

tents under water. The last day of the fair even saw a flood warning for the fairgrounds, which luckily didn’t happen. The parking lot got so muddy, that it was closed and fairgoers had to park in designated lots in the village and either walk or ride a tram to the fairgrounds. However, “when we had periods of sun, the people flocked to the fair.” said Jason Craig, secretary of the DVAS.

The parking lot was a mess and was closed off for most of the past year to allow for grading, seeding and growing time to let it recover. This summer,

The fair board received a grant from Delaware County Tourism, through the county’s bed tax, to make the upgrades, which

include a new concrete floor and walls. Other improvements to the fairgrounds are new stanchions in the dairy barn and a new wash rack for the sheep and goats at the end of the livestock barn. “The stanchions were 30 years old and needed

replacing,” said Rossley. “The wash rack was upgraded to meet new New York state regulations.” Most of the upgrades done throughout the fairgrounds are made by volunteers. The fair board is a volunteer board. “The fair board memcontinued on page 22

Breastfeeding Station at the Delaware County Fair

The Breastfeeding Station, in its 10th year at the Delaware County Fair, has been significantly appreciated by nursing mothers. The room is a clean, comfortable and private environment to breastfeed their babies. “Amazing,” “fantastic,” “awesome,” “very much needed” are some of the comments of moms who used the facility last year. Moms no longer need to stand in a bathroom stall or return to their car to nurse their child. The room enables families to enjoy their visit to the fair. The Breastfeeding Station is located on Tweedie Blvd. and Fairway Street. Directions are also available at the Fair Secretary’s Office. The Watershed Agricultural Council (WAC) and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will showcase their various programs at their tent, located on Tweedie's Boulevard. Throughout the week WAC will celebrate 26 years of supporting agriculture and working landscapes in the region. WAC’s four programs Agriculture, Forestry, Conservation Easements and Economic Viability will be featured each day. On Tuesday, Aug. 13, Catskill Watershed Corporation representatives will be on hand to talk about their programs and their role in the New York City watershed. Wednesday Aug. 14, through Friday Aug. 16, CCE of Greene & Columbia Counties will talk to fairgoers about their Master Forest Owners Program and forest conservation. Every day, DEP and WAC staff will answer questions about DEP land access permits, the council’s programs in agricul-

Pure Catskills guides will be available as well as information on Delaware County Clean Sweep. This year, the DEP exhibit will “focus on recreation,” stated Adam Bosch, director of public affairs at DEP. “DEP has about 137,000 acres of land and water that are open for recreation - mostly fishing, hiking, hunting and boating. hunger and food insecurity in the 1960s. Between 1962 and 1967, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded a pilot project in Alabama, Massachusetts, Missouri, Texas, and Rhode Island, as a five-year cooperative effort, to test ways to reach and teach nutrition to limitedresource audiences. Peer educators cultivate a sense of personal success which motivates participants to finish high school, pursue a GED or training program and find employment. Learning occurs through a series of free, hands-on nutrition education lessons. Taught by the peer educator, these lessons aim to increase the number of healthy children, youth and families. EFNEP follows a holistic approach which includes four core areas: diet quality and physical activity, food resource management, food safety, and food security, in a setting convenient to participants. At the end of the series, participants receive a certificate of completion from Cornell Cooperative Extension. EFNEP graduates exemplify significant improvement of the total family diet, nutritional well-being and physical activity behavior. Extensive networking, coordination and collaboration with other agencies, organizations and volunteers increases program reach and educational opportunities in a variety of settings; for example, job sites, individual homes, schools, daycare and community centers. Current participants have shared: "We have

in 1969 and the pilot project became widely known as EFNEP. Today, EFNEP is active in all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Micronesia and American Samoa. EFNEP is administered by USDA and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) in cooperation with the State Cooperative Extension Services via 76 land grant universities, including Cornell University. EFNEP focuses on limited-resource families with an emphasis on parents and other adult caregivers who have primary responsibilities of feeding young children, as well as specialized programs for moms-to-be and new parents. The program also contains a youth component for ages 5 -19. The passion and dedication of peer educators are important factors that contribute to the success of EFNEP. Since the program’s inception, peer educators indigenous to the target audience, have gone above and beyond to reach and teach limited-resource families in their respective communities. Studies have shown EFNEP participation results in a reduction in government costs spent on health care, increases in fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity, as well as reductions in food storage and food preparation practices that cause foodborne illness.

Gertrude is a lifelike sculpture with udders kids and adults can squeeze to see how it feels to milk a cow by hand. As dairy and beef farming are an important part of Delaware County's economy, there are several shows throughout the week, beginning Sunday, with the Jersey Parish Show as mentioned above. Judg-

bers are all volunteer,” said Jason Thomson, whose father and grandfather were long-time members of the fair board. “They put in so many hours during the year to make the fair happen. It’s not a paid position. They should be thanked for their commitment to serve 24/7.”

During the summer, high school students through CDO Workforce help get the fairgrounds ready for fair week. This year, they were painting bathrooms, pulling weeds under the grandstands and cleaning barns. “Many kids ask to come back year after year,” said Rossley.

For the first time in several years, there will be a team of oxen at the fair. The pair and their owners hail from Massachusetts, and will give demonstrations and cart rides throughout fair week. One thing returning to the fair this year is the butter sculpture, which will be located next to the 4-H Youth Building and the commercial tent that was added last year. Dreamland Amusements will be providing carnival rides to this year’s fair. Can’t remember where things are or what’s happening at a certain time? There are kiosks located near the entrances and the box office that have a map and a schedule of events. The fair board installed a new wash rack for 40 cows and horses near the draft horse barn last year.

This will allow presenters to get their animals washed in time to show them. There were times that adults and children missed showing their animals because they were not washed in time for their show. The new rack should help. As of press time, there were more than 1,000 animals registered. “In the animal depart-

ment we expect to see the same amount of animals [as last year],” stated Jason Craig, secretary of the Delaware Valley Agricultural Society. “And with milk prices as low as they are, it shows the dedication these hard working farmers have for the fair.” Dairy farmers are receiving approximately $18 per hundredweight

Will a Delaware Academy and Central School District at Delhi Cross Country runner win this year’s Delaware County Fair 5K run/

walk? Since 2015, a member of the boys’ cross country team has come in first place in the 5K race.

“The race at the fair is usually just before our official cross country practices start, so a lot of kids like to do it to gauge their fitness and kickstart their pre-season,” stated DA Cross Country Coach Skip Baxter. This year’s 5K run/walk and a 10K run is Saturday, Aug. 17, at 8:30 a.m. Both runs will start and end on the fairgrounds. The route will be the same as last year, which was changed due to the rainy, muddy conditions. “Last year we had to re route the run because of all the rain we had, so to avoid any chance of someone getting hurt, we took

them out a much dryer way,” stated Beth O'Brien, event coordinator. “We will do the same again this year as we feel that was a nicer route in the end. They will leave the fairgrounds and continue down South River Road to the halfway point, turn around and come back the same way to the finish line.” Baxter, who came in fifth in the 5K last year, praised the course and the atmosphere of the race, “The course is pretty flat and fast, and the atmosphere is always great! The past couple of years have been pretty wet and muddy, so I’m glad they are sticking with the course

from last year, where most of the mud is avoided. I’m looking forward to the race again this year!” O’Brien said she looks forward to the race and, “seeing the families and friends enjoy doing this together, and always cheering each other on, and seeing the young to the old is always a highlight for us.” A timing company will verify the accuracy of the results. There are seven age divisions, ranging from 12 years and under to 60 years and older. Awards and giveaways follow the finish. The top three male and female runners in each division will receive awards. The

35 Butter carving made its debut at the fair in 2004 and has been met with amazement each year. Unlike some other fairs where you can only view the end results, Delaware County Fair-goers can watch the artist actually manipulate the butter. “I haven’t heard what it is this year, but it’s always amazing,” said Rossley. Stop by the specially-designed cooler by the Dairy Barn every day starting Monday to watch this year's sculpture take shape.

133RD DELAWARE COUNTY FAIR

After a multi-year hiatus, the butter sculpture will be back at the fairgrounds this year. “It will be set up near the 4-H Building, right beside the new commercial tent,” explained Fair Board President Ed Rossley. More than 300 pounds of unsalted butter will again be sculpted and transformed into a work of art throughout the week at the Delaware County Fair.

Children continue to be a prominent part of the Delaware County Fair. This year, Wednesday, Aug. 14, is Children's Day. As always, children 12 and under are admitted free to the fair. In the Youth Building look for fun and fascinating activities for children.

They can be photographed with Milk Mustaches in the photo area (milk will be available for purchase), watch baby chicks hatch from their shells, watch 4-H'ers give public presentations, or enter the butterfly tent. At 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. kids can make a craft using peeler beads, at noon they can play with

slime and at 2 p.m. they can make stomp rockets. In the barns, kids can watch as 4-H'ers compete with their beef and dairy cattle, rabbits and guinea pigs. Starting at 8 a.m., the 4-H Horse show begins in the horse show ring followed by Gymkhana. At 6 p.m. watch the Livestock Skillathon Contest in the

Bicycle helmets are ok, sandals are not. Children must be seat belted in for their safety, and have no passengers. Kids in the grandstand are eligible to win one of 115 bikes, which are donated every year by local merchants. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County will host a display featuring three hot topics in horticulture and natural resources: invasive species, kitchen gardens, and reducing pesticide usage. Invasive Species Invasive species like wild parsnip and Japanese knotweed are common sights along roadways and riverbanks in Delaware County. While efforts are being made to keep populations in check, more emphasis is being placed on new and less common invaders. Priority invasive species are those that pose the greatest threats or impacts - and those species new to a region or that haven't spread too far to control or eradi-

coalition was formed between Delaware County Public Health, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council (ADAC) and Friends of Recovery of Delaware and Otsego Counties (FOR-DO) and many other community agencies in an effort to improve health outcomes related to substance use disorders. Substance use disorder affects people from all walks of life and all age groups. Many people don't understand why or how other people become addicted to drugs. Science and medicine support the idea that addiction is a disease. Like most lifestyle diseases, recovery may involve relapse and often requires treatment. Visit our Substance Use Prevention Exhibit in the

Human Ecology Building at the Delaware County Fair. We will provide resources that may be useful for you or someone you love who is struggling with addiction. Resources available will include brochures on vaping and other tobacco products, treatment options, community activities and involvement related to substance use prevention and recovery, along with many others. We look forward to seeing you! For more information about programs related to substance use, please contact Kali Murphy, Pro-

Members of the Delaware Valley Agricultural Society (DVAS), who oversee the fair, sent a notice to their shareholders whether they approved the sale to the city. A majority agreed to sell the fairgrounds to New York City. They published the following in the Walton Reporter on Feb. 8, 1957, “Owing to sale of the fairground to New York City for a sewage disposal plant, the present management of the Fair has indicated it will not attempt a resumption of the local agricultural exposition this year.” Local farmers and 4-H

The fair wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Jason’s grandfather and others who took it upon themselves to keep the fair and the fairgrounds in Walton. “My grandfather and his friend George Rich saved the fair in 1957,” said Jason. The following account paraphrases the complex story that was printed in the book 160 Fair Years The Story of the Delaware County Fair 1841-2001 by Ruth Bean. According to the book, in 1956, the Delaware County Fair was bankrupt and the organizers were tired of running the fair. They decided that the best decision would be to sell the land and pay back shareholders. The first potential buyer was the Walton Central School District for the new high school. by Vicky Klukkert This year's Delaware County Dairy Princess Theresa Cerosaletti invites fairgoers to stop by the Dairy Promotional booth to meet her and her court to learn about the benefits of dairy in the diet. “A common misconception is that higher-fat dairy products are bad for human health,” stated Cerosaletti. “Actually, higher-fat dairy can be beneficial for your health. I actually did a 4-H presentation earlier this year on this topic, using data from published research, including several large studies that showed that higher-fat dairy can be beneficial for human health.” During fair week, Cerosaletti and her court will answer questions about the dairy industry, hand out information about the dairy industry in Delaware Coun-

The dairy ambassadors on the court this year are Madison Albano,

After months of raising their animals about 60 4-H’ers will sell their meat goats, sheep, swine and beef at the 4-H auction Saturday, Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. The auction will have between 75 and 80 animals for sale this year and allows a market to local 4-H’ers. The animals are checked out by a veterinarian before they come to the fair and again when they enter the fairgrounds. They are weighed twice at the fair; once at the begin-

ning of the week and the second time the day before the auction to determine sale weight. “The purpose of the auction is to help the 4-H’ers recover some of the cost of raising and exhibiting these animals while providing high quality meat to the purchaser,” stated John Hannum 4-H Team Leader at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County. “We charge a fee of 1.5% of the beef animals sold and 5% on the meat goats, sheep and swine. This fee goes to a fund that guarantees the 4-H’er will

be paid for their animal sold at the auction, advertising costs and other misc. costs associated with the auction.” To help 4-H members learn what it takes to raise an animal for market, 4-H requires that members keep a project record book, something 4-H parent Ashley Scobie likes. “One of the many nice things about 4-H is that the kids are required to keep a project record for their market animals,” said Scobie. “The project records encourage the kids to keep track of every cost that is

“She loves having the animals and loves showing, therefore, any profit that she makes goes directly back into raising her next market animal,” explained Scobie. That is the case for most of the 4-H’ers who show and sell their animals at the fair. moved. Last year’s parade was rained out. “Last year’s parade was canceled due to the heavy rains and muddy conditions on the fairgrounds,” explained Dallis Wright, chair of the committee and administrative assistant of the Delaware County Department of Emergency Services (DCDES). “It wasn’t safe to have marchers or have apparatus on the track.” The firefighters parade was renamed the Heroes Parade three years ago after the fair board and the Delaware County Firefighters' Association (on behalf of the county fire departments) decided to move the parade back to Tuesday after two years holding the

parade on Sunday afternoon. The fair board voted to move it to Saturday this year to not only allow seasonal residents a chance to view the parade, but to also tie in with Saturday evening’s performance of The Shots and the Bergen County Firefighters Pipe Band. However, the feedback from fire departments about the move, “is mixed,” said Wright. “We will wait and see how our participation is before we can make any judgments about the move. Firefighters are deeply rooted in

tradition so we are still facing departments that are upset over the move from Tuesday evenings.” In addition to the fire departments taking part in the parade, there will be veterans and police departments. Wright hasn’t heard back from schools, but Laurens and Charlotte Valley marching bands usually participate in the parade. The committee invites anyone or any business that wants to provide a float or march to salute local heroes. “Any group, business, organization or individual

These wheel standers run with fiberglass S-10 Chevy bodies, Dodge Dakotas, Ford Super duties and 23 Ford T-buckets. You name it and they are running it. They

are producing upwards of 2,500 horsepower, from after market engines such as a Keith Black Hemi and the Fontana Arias to more common BBF and BBC engines from Fords and Chevys. They are allowed up to 575 cubic inches and can use superchargers or turbos burning methanol for fuel. These machines all use slipper clutches with a gearbox. They have Rockwell rear ends with planetary gears. The Dick Cepeck tires can produce wheel speeds up to 80 mph. The maximum weight of the vehicle is 6,200 pounds and are allowed 15 feet from center of rear axle to furthest point forward of the cab and weight box. Thursday night’s pull is the ever popular truck pull that pits neighbors against each other to see whose truck pulls the farthest. and Dywane Spoulding of Otego in third. "Each year gets better and better as each age group moves to the next age group" explained Jeff Wood of Northern Star Productions, who runs the competition with his wife Wendy. This year, youth 11 and under are invited to participate in the competition, which will be held Tuesday and Saturday. The qualifying rounds will be Tuesday. Registration for the youth competition begins at 3 p.m.; registration for the junior competition - ages 1217 - begins at 4 p.m.; and registration for the adult competition - ages 18 and older - begins at 6 p.m., all in the “Curtis Lumber Entertainment Tent.” The youth

and junior competition begins at 4 p.m. and the senior competition begins at 6 p.m. The top 10 juniors and top 15 adults will return to the fair Saturday for the finals competition that begins at 1 p.m. Singers should prepare up to four songs to sing in the competition. "After 10 years in this business Northern Star has

acquired over 160,000 songs in its library," said Jeff Wood. "We have different genres, so we probably have any song they want to sing." Wood said that the songs contestants have picked in the past have varied from country ballads to Broadway, to rock n roll and he is looking forward to this year's competition.

Items that have been displayed include a 1916 Fair paddle, fair booklets from 1887 and on; ribbons, and a black cat statuette labeled Walton Fair. “You can see how the fairgrounds have changed over the years,” said Thomson.
