Foods with ample antioxidants While the body makes some of the antioxidants it uses to scavenge free radicals and render them ineffective, it also relies on antioxidants from food sources. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute says that, to date, nine randomized controlled clinical trials of dietary antioxidant supplements for cancer prevention have been conducted worldwide. Some studies have pointed to the benefits of antioxidant supplements, while others found that these supplements can actually elevate cancer risk or diminish the efficacy of cancer treatments. Increasing antioxidant intake may be best accomplished by eating a variety of plant-based

The term “antioxidants” is frequently associated with cancer prevention. Antioxidants are helpful, but many people may not fully comprehend the role antioxidants play in fighting cancer. Antioxidants are chemicals that interact with and neutralize free radicals, thus preventing them from causing damage, offers the National Cancer Institute. Free radicals are formed in the body by exposure to ionizing radiation and other radiation. An excessive amount of free radicals in the body can negatively affect cells and potentially lead to the formation of various types of cancer and other diseases.

BERRIES, BY AND LARGE, ARE FRUITS THAT HAVE SOME of the highest antioxidant levels.

foods that contain high levels of naturally occurring antioxidants, rather than through supplementation. So what foods offer the highest levels of potentially cancer-fighting antioxidants? The largest and most comprehensive study to date into antioxidant levels was published in 2004 in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Researchers analyzed antioxidant levels in more than 100 foods. In addition to pointing out many foods people already knew to be antioxidant-rich, researchers uncovered some surprises. Here’s a look at some of the best bets for beneficial foods that may be part of a cancer-fighting diet. • small red bean (dried) • wild blueberry • red kidney bean (dried) • pinto bean • cultivated blueberry • cranberry • cooked artichoke • blackberry • prune • raspberry These foods rank high among those with the most antioxidants per serving, according to the USDA. However, many other foods also are great sources of antioxidants. These include russet potatoes, pecans, gala apples, walnuts, Indian gooseberries, cloves, and mint. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, particularly berries, can provide many of the antioxidants the human body needs to neutralize the potential damage caused by free radicals.

The relationship between exercise and cancer Exercise benefits the body in myriad ways. Studies have shown that routine exercise can help people effectively maintain healthy weights, sleep better at night and have more energy throughout the day. But exercise also may play a role in preventing one of the world’s most deadly diseases. The World Health Organization notes that cancer is annually responsible for about one in six deaths across the globe, making it the second leading cause of death in the world. Many of those deaths can be prevented by employing some simple yet effective strategies, such as avoiding tobacco products and applying sunscreen before going out in the sun. And while researchers aren’t exactly sure why, the National Cancer Institute notes that substantial evidence suggests high levels of physical activity are linked to lower risks of several cancers. The relationship between exercise and cancer risk is complicated. The NCI notes that nearly all of the evidence that links physical activity to cancer risk comes from observational studies. In such studies, individuals

report on their physical activity and are then followed for years to see if and when they are diagnosed with cancer. While such studies are no doubt valuable, they cannot definitively establish that physical inactivity causes cancer or that physical activity prevents cancer. All they can do is establish a link between physical activity and lower cancer risk. As mysterious as the relationship between exercise and cancer can seem, researchers can theorize ab ou t t h e c o n n e c t i o n between the two. For example, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute notes that scientists have recently begun probing the connections between exercise, the immune system and cancer risk. Such research is rooted in the notion that exercise can reduce inflammation, an acute or chronic response by the immune system that can contribute to cancer risk. The NCI also notes that the many biological effects

of exercise on the body might shed light on the potential link between routine physical activity and a lower cancer risk. For example, the NCI says exercise lowers levels of certain hormones, such as insulin and estrogen, that have been linked to cancer development and progression. Exercise also has been linked to improved immune system function, and a stronger immune system is more capable of fighting various conditions and diseases, including cancer. The relationship between routine exercise and cancer remains a mystery in many ways. But the potential for exercise to lower cancer risk is yet another reason for people of all ages to embrace physically active lifestyles.

CWC BOARD APPROVES LOAN AND FLOOD MITIGATION PROJECTS

The Catskill Watershed Corporation (CWC) Board of Directors on May 7 approved a loan for the development of a rental cabin business in the Town of Hunter, and approved funds to elevate a building to avoid future flood damage. T h e l o a n , f ro m t h e Catskill Fund for the Future, was awarded to Stony Clove Ventures, an enterprise pro-

posed by brothers Eric Ansanelli, an engineer, and his brother Sean Ansanelli, an urban planning consultant. They intend to build several seasonal cabins on a 21acre parcel at the juncture of NYS Route 214 and Notch Inn Road. The funds will be used to construct six cabins, a six-unit bathroom facility and utility infrastructure, as well as for excavating and landscaping. A building on Main Street in the Village of Hunter will be elevated by more than three feet with funds from the Flood Hazard Mitigation Implementation program. The project, planned by 7883 Hunter LLC and managed by Mark Chodock, will allow future flood waters to pass through vents in a new concrete foundation. The historic building, a former International Order of Oddfellows Lodge, is located 300 feet from the Schoharie Creek within a Special Flood Hazard area named in the Village’s Local Flood Analysis. The structure is envisioned as a café and office space.

Funding for floodproofing feasibility studies was also approved for a building in the Village of Walton owned by Robert Vitti, and one in the Village of Delhi owned by Ryan Sturdevant. The CWC board authorized $250,000 to enter into an agreement with Chazen Companies to conduct such flood mitigation feasibility studies for applicants approved by the Board. Applicants will have the option of utilizing Chazen, or receiving study funds to select their own engineering consultant. The CWC is a non-profit Local Development Corporation which runs several environmental, economic development and education programs in the New York City West-ofHudson Watershed. Besides the charming comfortable feel of this beautiful farm style home on the inside, when you venture outside you can take in the views of the land and stone walls that surround the property. If you are into gardening the 3+/- acre parcel affords you plenty of space to start your own spacious garden. Or become a small farmer and use the 2 stall barn to house your very own livestock? Want fresh eggs every morning from your own resident chickens? Or a horse to ride around the countryside? This is a must see property that gives you the feel of country living but yet minutes from Delhi or Oneonta.
