Three people were transported to area hospitals following this three car pile-up on county Route 21 on Monday, May 22.
3 Car Pile-up on County Route 21 By Lillian Browne FRANKLIN - A three-car pile-up on county Route 21 in Franklin, near Freer Hollow Road, sent three people to the hospital on Monday afternoon. The crash occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m., according to Franklin Fire Chief Tom Worden. The road was shutdown and traffic diverted until approximately 6 p.m. Worden said two of the vehicles crashed head-on, and a
third vehicle swerved in an attempt to avoid the two vehicles but ended up “nicking them both” and came to rest on the bank, off the road. The driver of the passenger van was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by emergency crews, Worden said. The driver of the van, as well as the driver of the car that was involved in the headon collision and a passenger were taken to area hospitals. The driver of the third car, Worden said, self-extricated from her vehicle and refused
medical treatment. Cooperstown Medical Transport, Delaware County Sheriff ’s Department and New York State Police assisted Franklin Fire Department at the scene. Weather did not seem to be a factor, Worden said, as the road was dry and visibility was good. Worden said the stretch of road is a frequent place of motor vehicle accidents. Straightening that section of road has been proposed to the town board, Worden said, but no action has been taken.
Delhi Man Charged with Attempted Murder, Negotiates Plea Deal By Lillian Browne DELHI - A Delhi man who was charged with attempted murder after brutally beating his girlfriend in February at the Buena Vista Inn in Delhi, pled guilty to a reduced charge in Delaware County Court on May 22. Jamal S. Abrams, 38, pled guilty to a charge of seconddegree assault in exchange for a promise of a five year prison sentence, as part of a negotiated plea and sentence arrangement. Abrams admitted to striking his girlfriend, Yvette Borrero, causing her physical injury on Feb. 3 at the motel located on state Route 28. According to court documents, Borrero called Delhi police fearing for her safety after fleeing from Abrams at PICCS bar and restaurant on Main Street in Delhi early in the evening. “Jamal got jealous because he thought I was dancing with some white guy,” Borrero said in
her supporting deposition. Abrams, according to documents, denied Borrero’s accusations to police and once they left he “became enraged,” according to Borrero. It was then the beatings began. Abrams viciously struck Borrero in the “face, head and body repeatedly with a number of closed fist punches and kicks as well as a blunt force object,” according to a felony complaint filed by police. The blunt force object was a broken Hennessey bottle which Abrams struck Borrero with, opening a “large laceration” on her head and right leg. The beating resulted in “deep bruising throughout her entire body” and “the loss of a number of teeth,” according to documents. When the beating stopped, she begged him to let her go to a nearby hospital, which he refused, according to her written statement to police. It was then, she said, she fled from Abrams a second time.
Abrams caught Borrero outside motel room 121, where he grabbed her by the hair and began dragging her behind the motel. Her screams for help drew the attention of Matthew Graham, in room 116. Graham called 911 to report what appeared to be a man beating a woman. It was then Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and arrested Abrams, charging him with second-degree attempted murder. Abrams waived his felony hearing in Delhi Town Court and was prosecuted in Delaware County Court with first-degree assault, first-degree unlawful imprisonment and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Following the prison sentence, Abrams will serve one and a half years of post released supervision. Abrams remains in the Delaware County Jail on $250,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 12.
