Introduction The mandate of 2019/2020 is a mandate marked by crucial changes within the Federation. This year, we adopted a new Visual Identity, we implemented our secretariat and changed our strategy. Despite the pandemic and the major impact on both the Federation and Erasmus+, the volunteers of ESN Portugal tried their best to support international students and stand for their rights. On behalf of the National Board 2019/2020, I would like to thank all of our partners, volunteers and international students for all the support and the work we developed together. This year inspired us to do better for students, for youth, for Erasmus+.

The Strategy of ESN Portugal The strategy of the Federation must develop together with the organisation itself. Therefore, in the year of 2019/2020, the strategy of ESN Portugal suffered a remarkable change that will pave the path for a sustainable future. The federation now defines its action by the civil year and for the next three years, it already has the main goals defined.

Establishment of the Secretariat This year, ESN Portugal gave a step forward in the professionalisation of the Federation with the establishment of the secretariat.

Visual Identity The Erasmus Student Network announces the adoption of a new logo and visual identity, endorsed in April 2019 during the Annual General Meeting in Thessaloniki by the members of the organisation. Changing the face of the brand is never easy. That’s why the transition to the updated logo and visual identity system happened gradually. Officially adopted by the international level in August 2019, it will be rolled out globally to the 42 National and over 520 Local Organisations by summer 2021. During the transition period, both versions of the logo are allowed. Keeping up with the times, the new version ensures readability and it is optimised for digital use. Commemorating our history, we retain the strongest elements of the brand such as the colour palette and the logo’s core element, the star. The colourful branches, now of equal length, represent the diversity of the Erasmus Generation supporting each other. Designed by Jan Hrubý, it is composed of the refreshed ESN star, the acronym “ESN” and the full name of the organisation below. The logos of the ESN Local and National Organisations are now created by adding their name in the second line of the descriptor.

Training Events Portuguese National Training Algarve

Local Boards Meeting Almada

Annual event with certified training on Project Management provided by our partner Key Training & Consulting. The event happened over the course of two days with 14 hours of training. This year it happened in Algarve on the weekend of 22nd to the 24th of November. It gathered around 20 participants.

The Local Boards’ Meeting gathers Local Board members with the aim of capacitating volunteers in their tasks, promoting Knowledge transfer and tool creation. This year it happened in Almada on the last weekend of August (from 30th until the 1st of September). It gathered around 40 participants that joined a total of 16 hours of training in 4 different tracks.

Training Events Position SpeciďŹ c Meeting Almada Annual event for training in speciďŹ c areas, aiming to empower local members and build on their competencies. This event contributes to better equip members for their current responsibilities and, at the same time, foster interest, motivation and capability to perform in new positions. The participants had to choose their training path from three dierent tracks with a total of 12 hours of training. This year it happened in Almada on the last weekend of February (from 28th until the 1st of March). It gathered around 50 participants.

Communication Summit Online

ESNupgrade Online

Annual training event, aiming to gather and connect the Communication Community and the Communication Committee. ESN Portugal’s trainers were invited to deliver workshops on different topics related to Communication with the aim of empowering the participants in this field. This year it happened on the last weekend of May (30th and the 31st). It gathered around 20 participants.

Annual training event for new volunteers, aiming to support sections in their training of new members. It is built to uniform knowledge levels and competencies throughout the national federation, as well as to foster closer contact and involvement in the network. This year it happened in the first weeks of April (6th until the 18th). It gathered around 70 participants.

Erasmus National Games The initially called ESNOlympics, now Erasmus National Games (ENG), is an event with more than 7 years of existence. This national event, developed by ESN Portugal, aims to promote the practice of health and well-being. This year having a lot of the programme and logistics adapted to the current situation. The competition happened on the weekend of the 6th to the 8th of March. On the 6th, we were supposed to have the conference but, unfortunately, due to the outbreak, we were not able to do it, instead, we had a sunset, a Zumba class, and the competition draw. In ENG, each local association can compete with one team. The winning team would have the opportunity to represent the country in the International Erasmus Games (IEG), which this year, 2020, would take place in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, IEG were cancelled. The winner of the 8th edition of the competition was ESN Minho.

Partners Regarding our commercial partners, this year brought many novelties. Firstly, we reinforced our relationship with our main partners: Vodafone and Eurosender, not only through performance but also by cooperating in several projects, such as the Survival Guide 2020. Secondly, we extended our network of partners to new areas, allowing us to expand our offer of good deals and discounts to our international students and the range of activities and projects with potential for cooperation. Part of these new acquisitions are names like Selina, Verse, FlixBus and Cambridge Linguaskill. Lastly, we also developed a cooperation agreement with SITEL for the Erasmus National Games, in order to promote the company as a great opportunity for international students to pursue a career working in Portugal. This was also the first step of our project “Job Opportunities”, which has the goal of promoting employment opportunities for international students in Portugal based companies.

Projects Impact of COVID-19 Facing the COVID-19 outbreak, student mobility suffered an extreme impact. The Erasmus Student Network, on the 9th of April, released the report “Student Exchanges in Times of Crisis”, which is the report of the survey carried at the end of march “Impact of COVID-19 on Student Exchange in Europe”. Based on that research, ESN Portugal developed a National Report about the impact of COVID-19 on outgoing and incoming mobilities of our country. This report provides an overview of the first difficulties students in and from Portugal faced during their mobility and regarding their mobility. In this document, a lot of information can be found connected to mobility, accessibility, support, and mental health. The report provides an overview of the current needs of our practices and how we must adapt to a fairer and more efficient answer when helping our students. Racism, exclusion, and anxiety were three of the many problems identified by this research.

ESN Portugal 2.0

Christmas with Portuguese Families

In the present year, the Federation took a deep look into the services it provides and empowered them through this project. The fields under analysis were: Vocational Education and Training; Survival Guide for Incoming Students; Erasmus National Meeting; IT Services.

The project Christmas with Portuguese Families aims to encourage Portuguese Families to host International Students in their homes for the Christmas Holidays so they can experience them in a very different and international way. By taking part in the Christmas festivities of a Portuguese Family, the international students experience first-hand Portuguese traditions and get to know people from different backgrounds and ages. In this years’ edition there were around 400 participants, divided approximately between 200 participants and 200 families. One of the biggest impacts to ESN Portugal and its local sections was the visibility provided by the big media coverage of this project in around 11 publications, in magazines, newspapers, radio and online.
