‘His Majesty’s Wisdom’ Our dear country has witnessed a number of mighty achievements, but we still have a long, hard road ahead of us which will require much sincere and disinterested effort, determination and self-sacrifice. Our target is not personal reward, but the progress and welfare of our country and the raising of its status among the nations.

COULD TRUMP BE GOOD FOR THE GULF? Rial’s peg to dollar has led to financial stability in Oman and stronger US currency will augur well for the economy

that his election might even be good for the Gulf. “The Omani rial’s peg to the US dollar is one of the pillars of economic and financial stability in the Sultanate. So, I don’t expect any change (in the policy) any time,” said Fabio Scacciavillani, chief economist, Oman Investment Fund. He was talking to Times of Oman, in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s surprise election victory last week. Echoing a similar view, Loai B. Bataineh, general manager and head of investment banking group at the Oman Arab Bank, said: “Oman will benefit from a strong dollar if Trump manages to attract the US companies to invest within the country.” This is important since oil is priced in dollar terms and the Oman government depends on

more than 60 per cent of its revenue from crude oil resources. Hamoud Sangour Al Zadjali, executive president of the Central Bank of Oman, last February said that the Sultanate remains committed to the peg of its rial currency against the US dollar. He was unavailable for comment on the Sultanate’s foreign exchange policy on Sunday. Although the US dollar depreciated immediately after the election result was announced, it recovered on the same day. Since the Omani rial is pegged to the US dollar, any appreciation in dollar value is directly reflected on the local currency. Elaborating on the implications of the victory of Donald Trump in the recent US election, Scacciavillani said that it will exert its influence through three transmission mechanisms. >A6

haitham@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Rents in Oman have fallen more than eight per cent this year, according to a newly released data. While some sought after areas in the capital, such as Shatti Al Qurum, saw rents dropping by more than 20 per cent, areas such as Bausher and Al Mouj were able to buck the trend, according to a report by real estate services agency Cluttons.

Owners say they have been drastically reducing rents, while local business owners have welcomed the drop in the hope that residents will have more disposable income to spend. “In the residential market, average rental rates fell by a further 2.3 per cent during Q3, bringing the total decline for 2016 to 8.1 per cent. On an annual basis, the weakest performing residential submarket was Shatti Al Qurum, where rents fell 21.1 per cent, followed by Sur Al Hadid at 20.8 per

cent and Qurum at 17.9 per cent. On a more positive note, during the third quarter, rents remained unchanged in two submarkets, Bausher and Sur Al Hadid,” according to a report by Cluttons. Faisal Durrani, Head of Research at Cluttons, noted, “The prospects for an immediate turnaround in the residential market remain unlikely and, given the country’s reliance on the oil and gas sector, the outlook for the residential market remains weak.” >A6

No cameras in prayer and rest rooms: Haya Water Times News Service

MORNING MINUTE

National Day fireworks at three places

MUSCAT: Haya Water has emphasised that the news recently spread through various social media channels about the presence of surveillance cameras in the prayer room and rest rooms are untrue. The cameras are only installed in open offices, corridors and other facilities in order to maintain the security of the company and its personnel. Khalid bin Ali bin Moham-

med Al Salami, Head of Security Department in Haya Water confirmed that the presence of cameras in the offices and sensitive facilities is necessary for security reasons in case there is any need for checking of recordings. This is so important because Haya Water is an industrial facility that specialises in environmental aspect. The rumours that there are cameras in the prayer room and rest rooms are not true and completely unacceptable and

illegal, the statement said. Security room The staff were informed last June that cameras will be installed in offices, corridors and other facilities and they will be connected to the security room. In fact, everyone can visit the security room to check how these cameras, which are connected to screens, work. Some authorities have already explored and investigated these

places and it was proved that there is no contradiction with the law. Regarding the strike that was recently carried out by some of the staff, the company confirms that this strike is contrary to the laws in force in the Sultanate, and this was confirmed during the meeting that was held on the first day of the strike on November 6, 2016 between Ministry of Manpower represented by. Undersecretary of Labour Affairs and the Executive Management of Haya Water rep-

resented by the CEO and the Administrative Board of Haya Water Labour Union and with the presence of representatives from General Federation of Oman Trade Unions and Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry. According to Ministerial Decisions No. ( 294/2006) , ( 17/2007) and (575/2013), the strike is considered unacceptable and illegal because the company is classified among the companies in which the strike is prohibited. >A5

hassan@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: This one-story whitewashed house is not your typical travel destination. The small house has turned from a business location into a remarkable tourist attraction in Muscat. Located in the traditional neighbourhood of Sidab, the house is home to more than 20 female entrepreneurs who make their living by selling handmade bags, purses, wallets and bottle covers. As the temperature has cooled and tourism season has begun in Oman, more visitors flock to the handicraft shop to buy locally made souvenirs. ‘Women of Sidab’, a project that provides women with workshops, has recently invited a number of social media representatives to promote their business. This marketing strategy has already attracted more visitors and the women said they have been receiving additional orders, even from the United Arab Emirates. Salma Al Wahaibi, a tailor who joined the group when it was established in 2014, said that the female-only group is “like a family”. “We visit each other if one gets

sick, married or loses a relative,” the mother of three said. Like many others, Salma works daily from 8am to 2pm sewing traditional bags. The house consists of five rooms, including one for cutting fabrics, another for tailoring and one for crafting fronds. The fourth room is a studio where tourists can be photographed while wearing traditional

Omani dress, while the fifth room is where the products can be purchased. Al Wahaibi said that most of the tourists are Germans, French and British. “Sometimes we receive up to 20 tourists per day, and have had orders for more than 6,000 bags and wallets,” she added. Muna Al Zadjali, one the founders of the project, said that they display and sell their handicrafts at hotels and duty free shops in local airports. “The profit goes to pay the women in our group and to buy new tools,” she explained, adding that the group has trained and employed more than 100 women since 2004, most of them from Sidab village. “Some left after getting married or shifted to a new house far from the village,” she added. Sidab is a small village nestled in the heart of Muscat city, located a few minutes from Al Alam Palace. Overlooking the sea, Sidab is part of the Wilayat of Muttrah, and is one of the first locationsin the countryto assist women, according to Al Zadjali.

hassan@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: The new representative of peace is a snuggly toy. A group of Americans are helping a local crafting guild by bringing sewing patterns for the beloved ‘American Girl’ doll so they can make traditional Omani clothes for the doll. “These toys are sold all over the country. It will be beautiful to bring back some clothing made by Omani women to show how peaceful, warm and welcoming this country is,” said a visitor from New York. “My niece has one, it is very popular,” Justin Meyers, associate director of Al Amana Centre said, adding that dressing the doll with clothes “which are authentically Omani will be interesting.” In a bid to boost understanding between cultures and religions, Al Amana Centre brings groups from the United States and Europe to visit Oman. “We work to help Muslims and Christians to better understand each other,” said Justin Meyers. He said that the groups coming to the Sultanate get to learn about

the Arab culture and Islam. “We want our guests to go back to the States with good stories about Muslims in a hope to change minds and perceptions about the Muslim world,” he said. “Most of the perceptions we get about Muslims are from the TV and movies. People should know how loving, kind, generous and peaceful they are,” he said, while stressing that Muslims and Christians need to hear good sto-

ries about each other. Around 60 people visited to Oman through Al Amana programmes this year, according to Meyers. “These are short eight-to-tenday visits focusing on religious dialogue and understanding each other,” Meyers, who has been working in Oman since 2013, said. Meyers works in the office where the beloved Dr. Wells Thoms used to work.

While Oman is a small market, it can be a transit to countries like the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, African states and even India and Pakistan Yerzhan Mukash Ambassador of Kazakhastan to Sultanate of Oman

HASAN SHABAN AL LAWATI

hassan@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Oman can be a hub for Kazakh livestock business in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Africa, Yerzhan Mukash, ambassador of the world’s biggest landlocked country said in an exclusive interview with the Times of Oman. As the first batch of sheep from Kazakhstan arrived in Muscat International Airport for the “first time in history,” the ambassador said his country might export goats and frozen halal meat to Oman in the future. “While Oman is a small market, it can be a transit to countries like the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, African states and even India and Pakistan,” he said. Every year, Kazakhstan sells tonnes of wheat to Iran, Turkey and China, the country that shares one of the world’s biggest land borders in with Kazakhstan.

But since Kazakhstan is a landlocked country, Mukash said the main issue facing investment is related to logistics. “But as the world is lifting sanctions on Iran, we can take advantage of our very good relations with Iran and Oman’s relationship with Iran. There are horizons for businesses being boost between Kazakhstan and GCC, especially Oman,” he added. While the two countries are highly dependent on oil exports, Kazakhstan enjoys animal and agricultural resources, according to Mukash. Ashgabat agreement To boost commercial ties with the GCC, Kazakhstan joined the Ashgabat agreement, which is a multimodal transport agreement between Oman, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, for creating an international transport and transit corridor facilitating transportation of goods be-

tween Central Asia and the GCC. “We can export our products to Iran and then to GCC from Bandar Abbas port in Iran to the Omani ports,” the ambassador stated. Asked about tourism, he said Omani nationals can get a visa to visit Kazakhstan two days after applying. Interestingly, there are only 50 Kazakhs in Oman. Official visit “We are waiting for an official visit by Oman’s Minister for Foreign Affairs to sign agreements to exempt diplomatic visa holders from visa to visit Kazakhstan,” the ambassador said, pointing out that Oman was the first Arab state to support Kazakhstan in becoming a non-permanent member of United Nations Security Council. The ambassador also mentioned that the Sultanate was the first Arab state to start a diplomatic and economic relationship with Kazakhstan.

Autistic children need more facilities

SPECIAL CARE: Currently, there are some 3,000 autistic children in the Sultanate. – Supplied picture

“The early intervention is there, but when they reach the age of 14 or 15, they don’t have facilities to continue. This is the challenge we need to work on as a society.” This was seconded by Barka Shahbal Al Bakry, Oman’s representative to the International Association for Volunteer Effort. “The government has a policy in Oman in which they do not conduct any pre-school education, but they subsidise us, instead,” she said. “In hospitals, the moment they feel a child has a disability, they will tell the parents to visit us. We then teach the mother a list of tasks her baby should be accomplishing. Currently, there are some 3,000 autistic children in Oman.

ties, “We are the only centre that intervenes when a child is a baby and helps parents to integrate children in larger societies, either in schools or other programmes they can attend,” she said. The association received government approval in May 2000, though it had been operating since

Expensive institutions “It’s just that they are different,” Al Bakry added. “We need specialists, and that is what we are lacking now. The institutions that are trying to do something for autism are private and very expensive, so many parents cannot afford to send their children there,” noted Al Bakry.

Cyber security training for ministry staff Times News Service MUSCAT: Ministry of Education (MoE) employees learnt to spot cyber security threats at workshops on IT security. Represented by the Directorate General of Human Resources, the MoE trained its employees and the educational directorates in the governorates on the basics of information technology security at the College of Law at Sultan Qaboos University. Ahmed Al Amri, studies and follow-up member at the DG of Human Resources and the program’s supervisor, said, “This programme is designed to raise awareness about security for computer users and associated networks in the office or at home, and learn to protect themselves and the institutions they work in through the safe use of these devices, networks, and information management. “It has become necessary to make all information technology users among the Ministry’s employees aware of security threats, such as viruses, hacking, fraud, and identity theft,” he added. Al Amri noted that the programme provides the ministry staff with the skills necessary to deal with the challenges being faced, due to the nature of their work with regards to information security, data handling and confidentiality. The programme also helps employees to recognise data threats from employees, service providers and outside individuals, as well as understand the essential features of information security, such as confidentiality, safety and availability.

It was clarified during the meeting that the strike from work shall not be repeated by the Labour Union or the employees in the future in order to avoid any legal consequences which may result in applying penalties on the Labour Union members and employees. The Labour Union shall direct striking employees to resume their duties immediately without any penalties. The company has positively dealt with the demands of the employees in accordance with the existing rules and regulations and some of these demands were approved in the meeting that was held on November 6, 2016. A team was formed chaired by Head of Networks and Information Security in the Ministry of Manpower and with the membership of representatives General Federation of Oman Trade Unions and Ministry of Manpower and Haya Water Labour Union. The team

shall investigate the attendance system and ensure its accuracy and then submit a report to the Undersecretary and a copy to the CEO and another copy to the president of the Labour Union. Haya Water would also like to confirm that the electronic attendance system aims to control workflow and such system is applied in most government and private organisations. It was also agreed to review and update the company’s Rules and Regulations and procedures. The committee that was formed to investigate the absence of staff shall be terminated and the company shall commit to the labour law. Another meeting was held on November 8 with the presence of representatives from General Federation of Oman Trade Unions, representatives of the employees and the company’s Executive Management. 43% of internal scholarship graduates employed MUSCAT: Graduate Survey Department at the Ministry of Higher Education released three detailed reports derived from the graduate surveys in 2015. The results indicated that 42.9 per cent of the internal scholarship graduates have jobs, compared to 52.4 per cent from the graduates of external scholarships and that graduates of internal scholarships are more employed in the private sector, in comparison to their colleagues of the external scholarships. These reports are designed to enable different categories of institutions and individuals interested in the higher education sector to understand the situation of graduates and their perceptions of higher education, and enable them to make decisions. -ONA

At one clinic in Oman, for example, parents had to pay OMR45 for a consultation with a specialist, with an additional OMR180 for an IQ test and OMR100 every time a behavioural test is conducted. “Children who are affected by autism don’t go to government schools because they do not have these programmes, so they go to special private schools that have these centres,” added Al Bahlani. “There need to be other organisations that we can work with in partnership, because we specialise in early intervention. “We want to work with society and help them understand the pain, struggle and difficulties families are facing when they have a disabled child,” said Al Bahlani. “This is in terms of a lack of services and an inability to find proper services for their children,. Since they don’t know whom to approach, some of them require counselling and some require technical and financial support. “If you have a child with a disability, the entire family needs to work together and support each other, or there will be many so-

cial problems.” “People are being shamed by society because they have been told they have a disabled child, and some parents are ashamed of this, as well,” explained Al Bahlani. “This is changing in Oman, and especially younger parents are coming forward with their children. “But there is still a stigma in society, and even if parents are accepting it, the larger society is not aware of this,” she added. “Children in school need to be educated about children with disabilities and understand their limits so that they can learn to work with them. “The thing we are lacking the most when understanding these children is communications, because they have their own way of communicating and learning things,” added Al Bakry. “You may be disabled in some form, but it is never that everything will be taken away from you. Something will manifest in greater ways than others.” Al Bahlani emphasized the need to create a conducive environment for those with disabilities.

DECLINE

A1 Lower occupancy forces cut in rents < FROM

“During the spring we forecast residential rents to end the year 10 per cent to 15 per cent down, overall, and it appears we are on track to achieve that, reflecting the average decline in tenants’ budgets of 10 per cent to 20 per cent recorded this year,” he noted. Isaaq, owner of a leading real estate company in Oman, said the lower occupancy rate has forced him to decrease the amount of rent being charged this year. “There is a big drop in demand for residential and industrial rental. We had to slash rents by nearly 30 per cent to match consumer demand this year,” he said. Um Tariq, an apartment owner, said that profits from rentals will be affected if she lowers her

rental price much further. “I used to rent out my apartments for OMR500 per month, but because of crunch I lowered it to OMR400, then again until it is now OMR 325. I couldn’t go any lower or else I’ll lose out on my profits,” she explained, citing the high cost of maintenance and utilities. “The rent being reduced is very good because business has been slow for a while now. If rents go down, it means people have more money to spend on purchases,” said Manoj, a resident and small business owner. “A while ago they increased rents by 30 per cent , and that had a big impact on business in Qurum. At least 12 shops in the area

had to close because they were not making enough money. With rents decreasing, people will have more money with which they can buy things, and that will be good for everyone,” noted Dilshan, a shoe store manager. “The shop next to mine went out of business last Ramadan and the owner had to sell it for half of what he bought it for. With rents going down it will be good for us because business has been pretty bad, and we’ll look forward to new customers,” said Taj, a clothes store proprietor. “This is actually very good for us because if rents are lowered, more people will come to Qurum and that means businesses here will pick up. Because of all the big

malls opening in Seeb and Al Khuwair, businesses here have been forced to shut shop,” says Prasad, a resident. “If rents are lowered how will property owners and developers make money to pay salaries? There are times when cash flows are affected these days and this will only make things worse,” said Mohammed Ghouse, a coffee house manager. One owner of several apartments in the Qurum area of the city added, “I have dropped from OMR500 a month to OMR400 a month because, otherwise, nobody will come. It’s the same for villas we own and apartments. There has been a drop in orders to get people to move in.”

FUTURE TREND

A1 Economists expect dollar to < FROM

strengthen after Trump win

The first one is political – how the new US administration will tackle the crisis in war-torn Middle East countries like Syria, Yemen and Libya and its attitude towards the nuclear deal with Iran. The second one focuses on oil price. “So far, it is not clear whether there will be an immediate effect in oil price with the change in US government,” added Scacciavillani. Saying that the oil price may take different directions, depending on the policies of the government, he noted that a sceptical attitude towards global warming would favour hydrocarbon consumption and therefore will be positive for the oil price. On the other hand, cutting red-tape for energy companies in the US will lead to higher production and therefore be negative for oil prices. The third transmission mechanism will hinge on interest rate because investors are expecting an economic policy that is more aggressive and expansionist

with higher spending on infrastructure projects and defence, along with a lower income tax. “This means that there will be higher rates (yields) on government bonds and a global reflation, which will sweep all markets, including Oman.” Rebound in oil prices “If these stimulus measures will succeed, there will be a gradual rebound in oil prices together in conjunction with tighter monetary conditions. However, if it fails, the risk is to trigger a debt crisis and a recession in two to three years,” added the economist. Trump this year promised independence from Opec and vowed to dismantle a nuclear deal with Iran that unlocked the nation’s crude exports. The US president-elect added that he would approve a pipeline from Canada to the US, which would curb demand for oil from the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, most of whose govern-

ments rely on energy revenue to fund spending. Bataineh said that the new US administration under Trump’s leadership would discourage large companies to invest outside and will reduce income tax, which will have major impact in creating jobs. The US dollar, Bataineh said, will continue to fluctuate until Trump assumes charge. The future trend in dollar value against other major currencies will depend on how Trump manages his country’s trade deficit with China and his foreign policy. “We will continue to see a strong dollar,” noted Bataineh. S. Suresh Kumar, head of research at Al Maha Financial Services, last week said that the future trend in dollar value will eventually depend on US Federal Reserve policy on interest rate, which is expected by the middle of December. All indications are pointing to an increase in Federal Reserve rates, which will help dollar to recover.

REGION Iraqi troops set to target district on edge of Mosul Iraqi troops recaptured the town of Nimrud, next to the ruins of the 3,000-year-old Assyrian city

BAWIZA (IRAQ): Iraqi soldiers fighting just north of Mosul, within sight of city neighbourhoods, said on Sunday they were ready to tighten the noose around IS militants waging a brutal defence of their Iraqi stronghold. Four weeks into the campaign to crush IS in Mosul, the city is almost surrounded but the militants’ defences have been breached so far only to the east, where they have battled elite troops for control of up to a dozen districts. An army special forces officer on the northern front line said his men aimed to target Hadba, the first neighbourhood ahead of them within city limits. The district was visible from his position in the village of Bawiza. Brigadier Ali Abdulla said IS fighters had been pushed out of Bawiza and another village, Saada, although progress had been slowed by the presence of civilians he said were being used by the militants as human shields. “Our approach (to Hadba) will be very slow and cautious so that we can reach the families and free them from Daesh’s (IS’) grip,” Abdulla said. The timing of the decision to

move on Hadba would also depend on progress on other fronts, he said. Security forces are advancing to the south of Mosul, targeting the city’s airport on the west bank of the Tigris river. Abdulla said IS was using suicide car bombs, roadside bombs, snipers and long range mortars to try to hold back the army advance in the north - all tactics it has used to lethal effect on the eastern front as well. Another officer, Captain Oqba Nafaa, said the militants were still fighting in Saada, using a network of tunnels to carry out surprise strikes on the attacking forces. That also echoed the urban warfare which they have deployed to lethal effect in the east of the city against elite Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) forces and an armoured division. In some districts, control has changed hands three or four times as the militants, using tunnels and exploiting the presence of civilians as cover, have launched

night-time attacks and reversed military gains of the previous day. About 30 km (20 miles) south of Mosul, troops recaptured the town of Nimrud on Sunday, next to the ancient Assyrian city which was overrun by IS militants two years ago. “Troops from the Ninth Armoured Division liberated Nimrud town completely and raised the Iraqi flag above its buildings,” a military statement said. The town of Nimrud lies 1km (less than 1 mile) west of the ruins of the 3,000-year-old city. The soldiers also captured the village of Numaniya, on the edge of Nimrud, which was once the capital of an Assyrian empire. More than 54,000 people have been displaced so far in the fourweek Mosul campaign. The Norwegian Refugee Council said on Sunday tens of thousands of people “lack access to water, food, electricity and basic health services” in areas recaptured by the army in Mosul and surrounding towns and villages. — Reuters

Modi hits out at Congress on opposition to demonetisation This is major step to eradicate corruption and black money... If any money that was looted in India and has left Indian shores, it is our duty to find out about it,” he said in his speeches, both at Panaji in Goa and Belagavi in Karnataka.

PANAJI/BELAGAVI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a scathing attack on detractors of the demonetisation move, especially the Congress, saying those involved in mega scams were now standing in queues to exchange Rs4,000 and announcing that more anti-graft measures were on the anvil. Modi, who got emotional while addressing a function at Panaji over the problems being faced by the people and the long queues in banks, urged them to bear with him till December 30, saying “I will give you the India you desired”. He stressed the need to go cashless and adopt plastic money. Making a combative but emotional speech, he said he was ready to face the consequences of his moves as certain forces are “up against me” as their 70 years of loot was now in trouble as a result of demonetisation. “I know that (some) forces are up against me, they may not let me live, they may ruin me because their loot of 70 years is in trouble, but I am prepared,” Modi said in

Government hikes withdrawal limits at banks, ATMs NEW DELHI: With public anger rising across the country over limited cash availability, the government on Sunday night eased key restrictions including raising daily withdrawal limit from bank counters and ATM as well as hiking the amount of old and now defunct currency notes that can be exchanged. To augment cash supplies, newly printed hard-to-fake Rs500 notes were also released in market. After a review by Finance Ministry, the limit of

the speech which saw him getting emotional a few times. “This government does not want to bother honest people but doesn’t want to spare the dishon-

old and now defunct Rs500 and Rs1,000 rupee notes that can be exchanged for freshly minted Rs2,000 and new Rs500 notes was increased from Rs4,000 to Rs4,500 per day. Cash withdrawal limit at ATMs was hiked to Rs2,500 from Rs2,000 a day. The weekly limit of Rs20,000 for withdrawal from bank counters has been increased to Rs24,000. The maximum limit of Rs10,000 per day on such withdrawals has been re-

Modi said. “This (demonetisation) is not an end. I have more projects in mind to make India corruption-free....We will take action against ‘benami’ property.

Corruption Hitting out at the erstwhile United Progressive Alliance government for not fighting corruption, Modi said “those who were involved in the coal scam, 2G scam and other scams, now have to stand in queues to exchange Rs4,000. “When Congress stopped 25 paise, did we say anything? You could dare to stop only 25 paise, that’s what your power was limited to. But you did not make higher denomination currency notes illegal.... We did it. People have chosen a government and they expect so much from it.” He said the people had voted against corruption in 2014. “I am doing what I was asked to do by the people of this country. This had become clear from the very first meeting of my cabinet when I formed the SIT (on black money). We never kept the people in dark.” “Soon after assuming power, a Supreme Court monitored Special Investigation Team was formed to investigate the black money parked outside the country. Previous governments neglected this; Did I hide anything? We took a key step to help the honest citizens defeat the menace of graft. “We collected Rs670 billion under amnesty scheme. “But in the last two years, through raids, surveys and declarations, the government has collected Rs1.250 billion in its exchequer...I kept on administering small doses of medicine to improve the economic situation of the country since I came to power,” Modi said, referring to the Jan Dhan scheme aimed at financial inclusion. - PTI

JAMMU AND KASHMIR

‘Take stern action against those advocating separatism’ JAMMU: The society will not tolerate any compromise with the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the country, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Sunday and demanded stern action against those advocating separatism. “The society will not tolerate any compromise with the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the country. It is need of the hour to take stern action as per law against those who advocate separatism and work at the behest of their masters sitting across the border,” Bhagwat told Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS) workers here. Bhagwat said people of Jammu and Kashmir have faced hardship to safeguard the integrity of the country. “You have faced those hardships for the country, the situation has to be resolved. If the situation has not been resolved for so long, then it can have two reasons. Either we have no courage to resolve the situation or there is some shortfall in our efforts to resolve the problem,” he said. The RSS chief said, in a democracy, society is the most powerful entity which has the power to elect its representatives. “Whatever the society wants the government has to work that way. This is the rule in democracy,” he said, adding in India the rule of the law is supreme and everyone has to follow it. “It is a huge country with so many states but it is still one country. The government will work for the emotional unity of the country which was the basis on which Constitution was written. The sovereignty, unity and integrity of the nation are paramount,” he said. Bhagwat said though the country adopted a federal form of government only a few decades ago, it has been one nation for ages. Bhagwat said the need of the hour was to follow the laws and strengthen the country and not divide it. - PTI

Tata-Mistry row escalates, no-holds-barred fight likely MUMBAI: The Tata-Mistry feud flared up on Sunday, with the ousted chairman rebutting allegations of “drifting away” Tata companies during his tenure and hitting back at attempts to question integrity of independent directors who backed him, prompting the $102-billion group’s holding firm Tata Sons to assert it will do “whatever is required” to deal with the situation. Terming the Tata Sons’ contention that group companies were “drifting away” under him as “furthest from truth”, Mistry hit out first at Tata Sons calling its criticism of independent directors, revered names in India Inc, as “truly unfortunate”. This led the salt-to-software conglomerate to assert that it will do “whatever is required to deal with the situation”, hinting at a no-holds-barred battle in the days ahead. A day ahead of the crucial board meet of Tata Motors, the group also said it is “crucially important” for the boards, including the independent

directors, to “consider their views and positions ensure that the future of Tata companies is protected, taking into consideration the interest of all stakeholders”. It can be noted that the independent directors of at least two big companies from the Group, including Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) and Tata Chemicals, have backed the ousted chairman

leading the holding company to question their objectives in a 9-page letter sent last week. Mistry’s first statement was a part-rebuttal of the allegations levelled against him in the statement and in defence of the independent directors. “To suggest that ‘ulterior objectives’ and ‘clever strategy’ can sway these eminent names in undertaking their fiduciary duties and in discharging the duties mandated by statute as independent directors is absolutely astonishing and really speaks of how low Tata Sons has unfortunately stooped in their public statements,” a statement from his office said, in a rebuttal to the recent actions of Tata Sons. Stating that the independent directors whose conduct has been questioned include names like Deepak Parekh, Nusli Wadia and Nadir Godrej, among others, Mistry added that it is “truly unfortunate” that independence of “stalwarts of India Inc” is being questioned. - PTI

External debt likely to swell to $110b At present, Pakistan’s external debt stands at $73 billion, which has been projected to swell 50 per cent to $110 billion in just four years

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s external debt is projected to grow to a whopping $110 billion within four years and it will need over $22 billion a year just to meet external payment requirements, posing a serious threat to the country’s solvency. By that time, Pakistan will again be back to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to avoid default

on international payments as it did in 2013, according to independent projections revealed at the National Debt Conference on Saturday. Two renowned economists, former finance minister Dr Hafiz Pasha and former director general debt Dr Ashfaque Hasan Khan, have made the external debt projections. The $110-billion external

debt level by 2019-20 will be $24 billion higher than projections made by the IMF in its latest report on Pakistan. Khan shared his assessment at the debt conference, arranged by the Policy Research Institute of Market Economy (PRIME) – an independent think tank. The duo updated their previous external debt forecast for fiscal year 2018-19 from $90 billion to $98 billion after the government borrowed heavily in the past one year. At present, the external debt stands at $73 billion, which has been projected to swell 50 per cent to $110 billion in just four years. They did not see a major change in Pakistan’s export situation and anticipated that by 2019-20, the exports would stand

Punjab to impose property tax on all vacant plots LAHORE: The government of Punjab has decided to enforce property tax on all vacant plots across the province, officials say. The Punjab Excise and Taxation

Department has already completed surveys in major cities including Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan and Gujranwala and identified about 250,000 vacant plots that

will come under the property tax net. The government will collect a revenue of at least Rs150 million from owners of these plots in this fiscal year. - Express Tribune

roughly at $25 billion, a level that the country crossed in the last year of previous government of Pakistan Peoples Party. Slowdown in exports Owing to slowdown in exports, Pakistan’s external debt to export ratio has been projected at 441.8 per cent by 2019-20, which is highly unsustainable. By that year, the country will consume 40 per cent of its export earnings to service the external debt. “Pakistan is fast slipping into the debt trap and neither the government nor parliament is playing its due role,” remarked Asad Umar, MNA of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf while speaking at the conference. Khan said by 2019-20 amortisa-

tion payments would increase to $10 billion. To fill the current account gap, the country will require another $12.5 billion a year, increasing the total external payment requirement to $22.5 billion. The current account deficit will mainly widen due to imports of machinery and plants for projects being developed under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Against IMF’s projection of $16.7 billion, Khan said total external financing needs to bridge the current account deficit and repay loans would stand at $22.5 billion by 2019-20. After exhausting all available resources including CPEC financing, foreign investment and funds from traditional donors, there would still be

$11-billion financing gap, which the country would not be able to bridge without IMF’s help, said Khan. He predicted that Pakistan would return to the IMF in 2018-19 – the fiscal year when the country’s external debt would be $98 billion and its financing gap will be $9 billion. “Pakistan’s debt situation is deteriorating rapidly and posing a serious threat to its solvency,” he cautioned. Commercial borrowings comprised 25 per cent of external debt, which was a matter of concern, said Shahid Kardar, former governor of the State Bank of Pakistan. He said low returns on the country’s foreign currency reserves compared to the borrowing cost were also a matter of concern. - Express Tribune

WELLINGTON: A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake and a series of aftershocks shook New Zealand in the early hours of Monday, generating a tsunami and sending thousands of people fleeing for higher ground. Emergency response teams were dispatched by helicopter to the region that bore the epicentre of the quake, some 91 km (57 miles) north-northeast of Christchurch in the South Island, amid reports of injuries and collapsed buildings. There were no immediate reports of deaths. Power was out and phone lines down in many areas of the country, roads were blocked by landslips and the Civil Defence Minis-

try warned that waves of up to five metres (yards) remained a risk for several hours. “The first waves have arrived but we know that it is too early to say what the impact has been,” said Sarah Stuart-Black, national controller at the Ministry of Civil Defence.”Our concern is what is coming. Future waves are coming that may be bigger than what has come before.” The first tremor, just 15 kms deep, struck the island nation just after midnight, jolting many from their sleep and raising memories of the 6.3 magnitude Christchurch quake in 2011, which killed 185 people. New Zealand’s Geonet measured Monday’s quake at magnitude 7.5. New Zealand lies in the seismically active “Ring of Fire”, a

Completely cut off St. John Ambulance said it was sending helicopters carrying medical and rescue personnel to the coastal tourist town of Kaikoura. It is completely cut off and officials said there are reports of a collapsed building. “There are some reports of casualties but the picture will be clearer as day breaks,” Acting Civil Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee said. In Wellington, there was gridlock on the roads to Mount Victoria, a hill with a lookout over the low-lying coastal city, as residents

headed for higher ground. “I’m just sort of parked by the side of the road and I think people are trying to go to sleep the same as I am,” Wellington resident Howard Warner told Reuters after evacuating his seaside house. Richard Maclean, a spokesman for the Wellington City Council, said there was structural damage to several buildings. Residents were advised to stay away from the central business district on Monday and the train network was closed for checks. Wellington international airport, however, was expected to open as usual on Monday. In Christchurh, where tsunami sirens continued intermittently, three evacuation centres were accepting residents. Police have set up roadblocks to prevent people from returning to

lower-lying coastal areas. Pictures shared on social media showed buckled roads, smashed glass and goods toppled from shelves in shops in Wellington and the upper South Island. “The whole house rolled like a serpent and some things smashed, the power went out,” a woman, who gave her name as Elizabeth, told Radio New Zealand from her home in Takaka, near the top of the South Island. There was initial confusion when emergency services first said there was no tsunami threat. Christchurch Civil Defence Controller John Mackie said that while the earthquake was centred inland, the fault line extended offshore for a considerable distance. That meant that seismic activity could cause movement out at sea, leading to a tsunami. — Reuters

8 dead in Myanmar clashes YANGON: Eight people died and 36 were arrested in clashes between the Myanmar army and what the government believes are Rohingya militants in northern Rakhine State, state media said on Sunday, in the largest escalation of the month-old conflict yet. Skirmishes took place throughout Saturday in villages in the north of Rakhine, leaving one officer and one soldier dead. Six bodies of attackers were recovered in the aftermath, while 36 other people believed to be involved were arrested. About 60 attackers armed with guns, knives and spears ambushed government troops on Saturday morning, the state-owned Global New Light of Myanmar said. The Myanmararmy returned fire, but at one point asked for army choppers to reinforce because its troops were outnumbered, the paper said. Northern Rakhine Soldiers have poured into northern Rakhine, close to the border with Bangladesh, since October 9, after an insurgent group of Rohingyas that the government believes has links to hardliners overseas launched coordinated attacks on several border posts. The military has blocked access to the area for journalists and aid workers. Residents and human rights advocates have accused security forces of summary executions, rapes and setting fire to homes. The government and the army have rejected the accusations, saying they were conducting the “clearance operation” in the villages in accordance with the rule of law. — Reuters

Afghan parliament Park to be questioned over scandal dismisses two more ministers KABUL: Afghanistan’s parliament dismissed two more cabinet ministers on Sunday, ignoring pleas from the president and chief executive to halt votes that threaten an already fragile Western-backed government. The power-sharing unity government was brokered by US Secretary of State John Kerry following the disputed 2014 presidential elections, but has since been weakened by infighting between rivals. Parliament removed the transportation and education ministers on Sunday, citing poor performance and bringing the total number of ministers dismissed to five over two days. Finance Minister Eklil Hakimi was the only minister on Sunday to survive the vote, a relief for international donors and the government. The vote took place despite pleas from Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah to halt further action against the cabinet. “President Ghani and Dr Abdullah told MPs that their decision will deal a huge political blow to the government at this

critical time and urged them to stop the process,” Mirdad Najrabi, chairman of parliament’s security commission, said. A statement released by Ghani’s office said the government did not want confrontation and respected the decision of the parliament, but asked the House of Representatives to suspend its decision. Parliament, which has a constitutional right to sack ministers, may hold votes on as many as 11 more ministers. “This is our right and we will use it and will not let the government politicise this process,” lawmaker Gul Padsha Majidi said before Sunday’s vote. Parliament on Saturday dismissed three ministers including, Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani. The deteriorating political situation in Afghanistan could become a major foreign policy challenge for US President-elect Donald Trump, who has said little about Afghanistan on the campaign trail. Kabul was supposed to have overseen fresh parliamentary elections and a constitutional grand council to re-establish political legitimacy. — Reuters

SEOUL: South Korean prosecutors will question President Park Geun-hye over a political corruption scandal engulfing her presidency, an official said on Sunday, the first time a sitting president will be questioned by prosecutors over a criminal case. Hundreds of thousands marched in the capital Seoul on Saturday demanding Park resign. Many protesters said Park, whose public support has dropped to the lowest point ever for a democratically elected South Korean leader at 5 per cent, was unfit to rule. Prosecutors are investigating whether Park exerted improper pressure on “chaebol” conglomerate bosses to raise funds for two foundations at the centre of an influence-peddling scandal involving a friend of hers, Yonhap reported on Sunday, citing prosecution sources. Choi Soon-sil They are also probing Park’s friend, Choi Soon-sil, who is alleged to have used her ties to the president to meddle in state affairs and wield influence in the cultural and sports communities, a prosecutor has previously said. Prosecutors have already questioned the de facto head of Samsung Group Jay Y. Lee and the chairmen of Hyundai Motor Group and Hanjin Group over the scandal,

the other chaebol bosses had met prosecutors. A Korean Air Lines spokesman confirmed that Cho Yang-ho, who is chairman of Hanjin and South Korea’s largest airline, had appeared for questioning but did not elaborate further. A Hyundai Motor spokesman declined to comment and Samsung Group could not immediately confirm the reports of prosecutors questioning their respective officials.

media reports said on Sunday. “It’s correct we’re planning to question the president but the date is undecided,” an official at the prosecutors’ office told Reuters. Yonhap news agency quoted a prosecution official as saying Park’s questioning should be done no later than Wednesday. “Questioning people face-toface is our principle,” the official said. Park will appear before prosecutors as a witness, Yonhap reported. Park’s office said it would be Tuesday at the earliest before it

will have a position on the prosecutors’ plan and was considering retaining a lawyer for the president. While some previous South Korean presidents have been mired in scandals or allegations of wrongdoing involving family members during their terms, none were directly questioned by prosecutors while they were in office. The prosecution office official confirmed the chairman of Hyundai Motor, Chung Mongkoo, was questioned on Saturday but declined to confirm whether

Impeachment Park faces intense pressure from the public and parliament to step down over the scandal, but the main opposition parties have not raised the possibility of initiating impeachment proceedings. The presidential office said earlier on Sunday that Park was “earnestly considering ways to normalise state affairs” and that she had “heard the voices of the people at the rally”. Park has said she had discussed with conglomerate heads in July last year her desire for them to contribute more for culture without elaborating. South Korean prosecutors raided Samsung Electronics last week as part of the probe over the scandal and whether the company separately gave millions of euros to a company controlled by Choi and her daughter. — Reuters

UKIP’s chief Farage meets Trump Pro-Brexit leader and the US president-elect discussed Donald Trump’s victory, global politics and Brexit

NEW YORK/LONDON: Leading Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage visited Donald Trump at his home on Saturday, after suggesting he could act as a go-between to help smooth British relations with the US president-elect. British Prime Minister Theresa May is not expected to meet the incoming leader until early next year

and Farage has suggested her criticisms of Trump in the early days of the campaign could damage ties with Washington. “We’re just tourists!” Farage, head of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), told reporters as he waited for an elevator to take him up to the meeting at Trump Tower in New York City.

He later tweeted a photograph of himself with Trump standing in front of a pair of golden doors and smiling broadly, the presidentelect giving the camera a thumbsup. “It was a great honor to spend time with @realDonaldTrump,” Farage tweeted. “He was relaxed and full of good ideas. I’m confident he will be a good President.” Trump’s election campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said: “I think they enjoy each other’s company, and they actually had a chance to talk about freedom and winning and what this all means for the world.” In a separate photograph posted on Twitter, UKIP donor Arron Banks, Breitbart London Editor in Chief Raheem Kassam, and Gerry

Le Pen hopes for Trump-like win in 2017 French election LONDON: Donald Trump’s US election was a victory of the people against the elite, France’s farright leader Marine Le Pen said on Sunday, adding she hoped the French would follow suit next year and make her president. Opinion polls show National Front leader Le Pen likely to win the first round of voting next April but lose the runoff in May to whoever should be her opponent. ‘Victory of people’ Asked during an interview with the BBC’s Andrew Marr show if Trump’s victory made her own election win more likely, Le Pen said: “He made possible what had previously been presented as impossible so it is really the victory of the people against the elite.” “So if I can draw a parallel with France then yes I wish that in France also the people up-end the table, the table around which the elites are dividing up what should go to the French people,” she said, according to a translation into

English provided by the BBC. Le Pen said she hoped all EU citizens could get the chance to express their views on the European Union through a referendum like Britain’s June 23 vote, adding that “the elites would be in for another surprise” if they did ask the question. She also said there was no reason for Europe to be scared of Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We’d better, if we want a powerful Europe, negotiate with Russia, and

have cooperation agreements with Russia, commercial agreements with Russia,” she said, adding that it was the EU that was destabilising Europe, not Russia. “The model that is defended by Vladimir Putin which is one of reason, protectionism, looking after the interests of his own country, defending its identity, is one that I like.” Le Pen said her party had borrowed from a Russian bank but only because French banks had refused to lend to it. — Reuters

Gunster, an American whose advocacy firm worked on the Brexit campaign, were also pictured with Trump and Farage. In a leaked diplomatic telegram, sent on November 9 and printed in the Sunday Times newspaper, Britain’s ambassador to Washington, Kim Darroch, said he believed Britain had built better relationships with Trump’s team than other foreign diplomats. “(Trump) is above all an outsider and an unknown quantity, whose campaign pronouncements may reveal his instincts, but will surely evolve and, particularly, be open to outside influence if pitched right,” he said. “We should be well placed to do this.” UKIP, which has only one mem-

ber of parliament in London, said Farage and Trump spent more than an hour discussing Trump’s victory, global politics and Brexit. A UKIP official has suggested Farage could even be the next ambassador to the United States, but British media reported that May’s office rejected the idea of any role for Farage, citing unnamed sources who described him as an “irrelevance”. A day after Trump’s election victory, Farage called on the real estate mogul to reverse “loathsome” Barack Obama’s policy by making Britain his top priority. Farage said he had been pleased at Trump’s “very positive reaction” to the idea that a bust of former British prime minister Win-

ston Churchill be put back in the Oval Office. He has also joked about assault allegations against Trump. He proposed that in any meetings between the British and American leaders, he could attend to be the “responsible adult to make sure everything is OK.” Farage, who spoke at a Trump rally during the election campaign, had predicted the former reality TV host would tap into the same dissatisfaction among voters that led to Britain deciding on June 23 to leave the European Union. Trump made repeated references to Brexit during his campaign, saying it had highlighted the desire for change among voters frustrated with traditional politics. — Reuters

Hooper has had a lifelong passion for swimming since nearly drowning at the age of five. He said he first conceived of the Atlantic challenge while battling depression in later life.

Shark breeding grounds A group of Senegalese onlookers said a prayer for him. Hooper, who is 6 feet (1.8 m) tall, may have to swim through heavy seas, as well as shark breeding grounds close to Brazil. “Together we’re going to show that nothing is impossible,” he told Reuters before his departure. “I’m a little bit nervous, I’m a human being. I have a few fears

Camouflage wetsuit In particularly risky zones, he will wear a camouflage wetsuit and use cans of rotting shark cartilage that are supposed to act as a natural repellent. He aims to swim up to 12 hours a day in two sessions and then rest on board one of the two support vessels sailing alongside him with nine crew members and an English Mastiff named Tank.

DETERMINED: Ben Hooper, 38, breathes between strokes as he starts a swim across the Atlantic from Dakar, Senegal, on Sunday.

The boats have been loaded with water, ration packs, bottles of vinegar for jellyfish stings - and a Christmas tree. To ward off the inevitable fatigue and dips in morale, Hooper said he will think about his daughter but also bear in mind the exploits of explorers like Ranulph Fiennes, who crossed the Antarctic unsupported on foot, and is backing the mission. “I will need to draw on their stories as this is bound to drive me to the edge,” said Hooper. Music also gives him a boost and one of his top training tracks is “Hall of Fame” by Irish band The Script. The swim, which aims to raise a million pounds for charity, has been delayed several times. In recent days, three crew members including a skipper and

medic dropped out before the planned start. They have since been replaced. Sources formerly involved said that there had been concerns about the safety and readiness of the vessels. Little crazy “For me it was no skipper, no go,” said John Rogers, a friend of Hooper’s who was due to accompany him. “But I hope Ben makes it. He has the stamina and the mindset even if he is a little crazy,” he said. Nigel Taylor-Schofield, captain of one of the vessels, said the tiller had broken on the eve of departure and had to be repaired overnight. “It’s going to be an interesting challenge,” he said on the beach, with his catamaran bobbing in the

background. Besides rough seas, another challenge will be crossing the low-pressure area near the Equator known as the Doldrums, where boats can be becalmed for weeks. French-born Benoit Lecomte claims to have swum the Atlantic in 1998 but it was not recognized by Guinness World Records and Hooper said his pace was impossible. “If I don’t make this, as long as I have at least one leg and one arm, I will bloody do it again and I will get it done,” said Hooper. — Reuters

LOS ANGELES: When Jackie Chan saw an Oscar at Sylvester Stallone’s house 23 years ago, he said that was the moment he decided he wanted one. On Saturday at the annual Governors Awards, the Chinese actor and martial arts star finally received his little gold statuette, an honorary Oscar for his decades of work in film. “After 56 years in the film industry, making more than 200 films, after so many bones, finally,” Chan, 62, quipped at the star-studded gala dinner while holding his Oscar. The actor recalled watching the ceremony with his parents and his father always asking him why he didn’t have Hollywood’s top accolade despite having made so many movies. He praised his hometown Hong Kong for making him “proud to be Chinese,” and thanked his fans. Often overlooked The actor was introduced by his Rush Hour co-star Chris Tucker, actress Michelle Yeoh and Tom Hanks, who referred to him as “Jackie ‘Chantastic’ Chan.” Hanks said it was especially gratifying to be able to acknowledge Chan’s work because martial arts and action comedy films were two genres often overlooked during awards season. — Reuters

READERS’ FORUM Improved awareness on autism is always helpful This refers to the report‚ Charity golf to raise OMR 14,000 for autism awareness in Oman’ (November 11). In my opinion, this initiative is praise worthy. It is good to have awareness campaigns as well as media coverage on issues of social interests. They have the power to feel the pulse of people and it makes a difference in the long run. At the same time, observing occasions like World Autism Awareness Day and exposures given by media to children of this condition should not be a curse for the remainder of their lifes. My apprehension Scan this QR code is that our society might find it difficult to to send letters to the accept children of this nature as they might Readers’ Forum, categorise them as less privileged. T

he election of Donald Trump, the consummate deal-maker, throws up a unique chance for stability and an end to the chaos, violence and civil war that has engulfed Libya since the overthrow of Colonel Gadaffi. How? Because he is a businessman; a dealmaker, plain and simple. Policy-wise, Trump is hard to second guess this early after the election. He opposed the 2003 Iraq invasion, but also opposed US bombing of Gaddafi in 2011. But reasons for optimism regarding Libya, and for the Middle East in general, are not rooted in guesswork over policy, but in the style that he brings to the table. It is the style of a businessman-deal maker. It is often remarked that Trump is the first US president never to have served in politics of the military, and the flip side of this is he is one of the few who knows how to cut deals - because he is one of the few to have worked in the commercial world. His biggest challenge, in fact, may be getting things done by breaking through the layers of advisors and bureaucrats that clog Washington. “Mr. Trump as a decision-maker will be either contained by the Establishment, and so most of his rhetoric will be diminished, or he will somehow hopefully change the Establishment”, says Mahmud Jibril, who made his name as prime minister of the rebel administration that emerged in Libya’s Arab Spring to combat Gaddafi. “His (Trump’s) business instincts will make him go for the opportunity when he can see it,” says Jibril, while warning: “But there are institutions and a bureaucracy which are well established and entrenched in the United States. And so there will be tension between the new president and such a strong bureaucracy.” And yet, if anyone can ram change through a bureaucracy it is Trump. Especially concerning Libya, where clear blue thinking is needed to prevent a slow-burning civil war erupting into a Syria-style conflagration. Two sides have been fighting off-and-on since 2014, when Libya Dawn, an alliance of extremists and Misratans, rebelled against the newlyelected House of Representatives parliament.

Having failed at the ballot box, Dawn tried instead the gun, capturing Tripoli and forcing parliament to relocate to Tobruk. Two years on, Tobruk has the upper hand, thanks to the bold capture in September by its army commander, Field Marshall Khalifa Haftar, of the country’s four key oil ports. But the civil war is sucking in outside powers - Turkey, Qatar, Britain and the Obama Administration are sympathetic to Dawn, while Egypt, United Arab Emirates, and France err on the side of Tobruk, with Russia minded to join the latter group. A new government, the Government of National Accord, chosen by the UN rather than the voters, is now in Tripoli and has been a dead loss. Beholden to Libya Dawn militias, Tobruk sees it as a Dawn adjunct. This is a loggam tailor-made for a negotiator: Not the supine diplomats from the UN who have failed to fix it but a man who has made deal-making his life. A Trump. A deal to bring Libya peace is time-limited, not least because Russia, which is already sparring with the West in Syria, is poised to jump in on the side of Tobruk. “The longer this Libya conflict lasts, the more likelihood that Russia will become an active player on Libyan soil, and this is not good for the United States,” says Jibril. The Russian involvement looks more likely after agreement that a group of House of Representatives lawmakers will shortly visit Moscow seeking backing. An obvious answer - to anyone, such as president-elect Trump, old enough to remember the Cold War - is some Detente. Neither Moscow nor Washington needs a new front against each other’s allies in the Middle East, and in fact neither wants the existing sparring over Syria. Trump has already crafted good relations with Putin. “If Trump can reach some sort of rapprochement with Russia then there is a likelihood some sort of transaction over various MENA problems can be reached.” says Jibril. Interestingly adding the importance of a consensus on Iran. And Jibril should know.

he launch of the secondgeneration Renault Koleos in Oman is one of the company’s most significant to date. So significant that we are in fact one among the first market to get the car — not something we’re used to here. The medium-SUV is poised to become the company’s topseller here, which is fitting when you consider the continued rapid growth in this corner of the market. The new Koleos sits on the same proven architecture as the Nissan X-Trail (fruits of the global Renault-Nissan Alliance) and Renault is keeping up with its offensive in the SUV segment. This brand-new addition to the product line-up will provide Oman customers with a wider and complete choice to fulfil even more their local expectations. Here we take our first drive of a Koleos hosted by the company at Downtown Dubai where it was officially launched. New Koleos was first unveiled at the last Beijing Motor Show and embodies Renault’s high-end vision for the markets where SUV sales are booming. I must say, Koleos delivers all that is expected of a D-segment SUV: Powerful, muscular exterior lines, four-wheel drive technol-

Impressive performance Koleos comes with a 2.5-litre, fourcylinder engine and has 16-valve powerplant with double overhead camshafts. Power is 170hp (126kW) at 6,000rpm, with peak torque of 233Nm at 4,000rpm. Renault says the two-wheel-drive Koleos needs 9.5 seconds to reach 100km/h, while the heavier all-

wheel-drive version needs an extra 0.3s to make the same mark. The all-wheel-drive variant drives the front wheels for the most part, sending up to 50 per cent of drive to the rear when required. A locked four-wheel-drive setting allows for an even split of torque at low speeds on loose surfaces. We tested the Koleos on winding roads surrounding Dubai, where the SUV acquitted itself well with nicely weighted, consistent steering and decent balance. On these roads, Renault’s machine felt much more impressive. With its global appeal, Koleos will certainly play a huge part in the Renault’s brand’s international growth by expanding its product range and extending its foothold across the world. For Renault, Koleos comes at a time when SUVs are enjoying strong growth in many markets, and for many consumers, this will be their first opportunity to experience the Renault brand. –nishad@timesofoman.com Local dealer: Suhail Bahwan Automotive Toll free number: 8005 0011 renault-me.com

Importance of Proper Air Pressure in Tyres Story Mobin Mathew Blesson

W

e know that proper air pressure is the most important thing to help tyres wear longer, save fuel, and improve the handling of vehicles. Your tyres will naturally lose 1 to 2 pounds of air pressure a month, but most people don’t realise that for every 10 degree change in temperature your tyre air pressure changes 1psi (pounds per square inch). Checking air pressure is easy with accurate air device. To check air pressure, unscrew the valve cap and press the device in to place, you may hear short burst and air comes out. The device also displays the air pressure. If you add air, check the air pressure again to make sure you have the correct air pressure. The correct air pressure may be found in the vehicle owner’s manual or on the tyre placard attached to the vehicle door edge, doorpost glove box, or fuel door. Remember, don’t use inflation number shown on the tyre, this number only represents the maximum tyre inflation pressure, not the recommended air pressure for your vehicle.

When finished, replace the valve cap. This will protect the valve stem from dirt and moisture, which could cause air loss. Remember to replace the valve assembly when you replace the tyres. It’s your best assurance against a sudden or consistent loss of air pressure. Many believe that they can check air pressure of their vehicle just by looking at the tyre or judging the sidewall appearance. Also, many people use air metres at service stations, which can be grossly inaccurate due to exposure or abuse. Invest in a quality tyre pressure device. To get the most accurate reading, make sure to check the pressure before driving on your tyres. If you have to drive before you check the pressure, try not to drive more than a mile; driving on a tyre increases its temperature and air pressure. To get the most out of your tyres and best fuel economy, try to check your air pressure every other time you fill up at the gas station or at least once a month. And finally, don’t forget to check your spare tyre. — mobinmathew@timesofoman.com

haitham@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Corporate sector can leverage new technology solutions to boost growth prospects and better manage their working capital during challenging times in their corporate journey, according to a senior banker in Oman. Speaking to the Times of Oman, Daniel Felton, general manager and head of Commercial Banking at HSBC Bank Oman, noted that HSBC focuses on relation-

ship banking, where the combination of local presence and the profound expertise gathered by the HSBC Group internationally is customised for its clients in Oman, to provide innovative solutions across all aspects of banking, to best meet their needs. “For the growth of corporate clients, they must have access to advice, expertise and information, which HSBC can provide due to its local presence and wide network of experts around the world. This combined with the latest technology, can facilitate an environment where organisations can make use of our products to increase efficiency, meet their funding requirements and manage their business through the cycle” he explained, citing examples of companies engaging in a strate-

gic dialogue early in the process to ensure the right range of solutions are provided. Most organisations reach the dialogue stage with their respective banks when there is an immediate need for funding or the date of project execution approaches an uncomfortable proximity, which allows for little strategic discussion between banks and clients. SMEs constitute nearly 50 per cent of the workforce in Oman and with future diversification plans they are to play a pivotal role in development of the economy. According to Felton, as HSBC serves nearly every sector and industry worldwide, SMEs should also be engaging in a strategic dialogue with their bank at an early stage to seek advice whilst they work to grow their business.Access to the right information is often as important as access to funding. “We have market leading technological solutions like our advanced internet banking channel – HSBCnet and liquidity solutions like cash concentration which remove manual processing, increase efficiency and therefore help accelerating decision making process. All of these can prove beneficial for companies looking for efficiencies and better manage their working cap-

ital positions. “Online and digital solutions also remove significant operational burdens which can benefit all companies – including SMEs” he added. Felton elaborated that although there is a significant tightening of liquidity in the country and the region as a whole, technological solutions presented an excellent route to help manage the situation. “The times are certainly challenging but leveraging technological solutions is an effective way to help better manage cash position. We provide our customers with market leading technology solutions, that allow them to access real time information faster and more efficiently, giving them more time to focus on the strategic and tactical elements of running their business,” he said.Felton noted that this was one of the major discussions of the recent ‘Growth Series’ event held on liquidity management. HSBC started the ‘Growth Series’ in 2014, initially directed at SMEs and how HSBC could support them more broadly – since then the initiative has expanded and is offered to all corporates and SMEs. A major part of the series was to provide access to information and expertise accumulated by HSBC both locally and globally.

Emerging-market rout extends to Gulf on Trump’s policy risk DUBAI: The biggest emergingmarket stock selloff in more than a year extended to the Gulf on concern US President-Elect Donald Trump will change oil agreements and his nation’s relationships with Saudi Arabia and Iran. The DFM General Index in Dubai, which counts Iran as a trading partner, dropped for a third day, losing 1.5 per cent as of 12:58pm local time. Abu Dhabi’s ADX General Index fell one per cent. Qatar’s QE Index retreated 0.7 per cent. Trump this year promised independence from Opec and vowed to dismantle a nuclear deal with Iran that unlocked the nation’s crude exports. He also said he would approve a pipeline from Canada to the US, which would curb demand for oil from the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), most of whose governments rely on energy revenue to fund spending. “No one knows what Trump’s policies toward the Middle East will be, and that kind of uncertainty keeps investors away,” said Talal Touqan, the head of research at Abu Dhabi-based Al Ramz Capital, a brokerage and investment bank. “Will he increase production from Canada and break oil agreements? What will his policies be toward

Iran and Saudi Arabia?” Stocks across emerging markets fell for a third day through Friday on concern that Trump’s plan to boost spending will raise inflation, leading to more frequent Federal Reserve interest-rate increases. The rout extended to bonds and currencies, including all three of Saudi Arabia’s US dollar bonds, which fell every day since he won the election. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian stocks have continued to rally after the government sold $17.5 billion of bonds last month, an emerging-market record. The Tadawul All Share Index, which entered a bull market last week, gained for a seventh straight day on Sunday, adding 1.5 per cent. The gauge has advanced 16 of the past 18 days. Kuwait’s SE Price Index slipped 0.2 per cent and the Bahrain Bourse All Share Index fell 0.1 per cent. — Bloomberg News

Cost-cutting helps Hindalco to triple quarterly net income MUMBAI: India’s biggest aluminium producer Hindalco Industries reported quarterly profit that more than tripled on cost-cutting and a one-time gain, and said it was seeking to raise funds. Net income climbed to Rs4.4 billion ($65 million) in the three months through September from Rs1.2 billion a year earlier, the company said on Saturday. That compares to the Rs3.3 billion average of 19 analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg. The company’s board approved raising up to Rs50 billion and has set up a committee to decide on the type of offering, including sale of shares or foreign currency convertible bonds, to be made. The flagship company of Indian business tycoon Kumar Mangalam Birla’s Aditya Birla Group is the best performer on the NSE Nifty 50 Index this year, boosted by higher prices for aluminum and copper and lower costs. Industrial metals are poised to benefit from United States President-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to boost infrastructure spending, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. “Operational performance was supported by benign energy prices and some recovery in the aluminium prices,” Hindalco said.

“The macroeconomic headwinds still persist and the uncertain global macro factors pose several challenges.” One-time gain Revenue was little changed at Rs95.6 billion, while total costs fell 5.3 per cent to Rs87.6 billion. The company had a one-time gain of Rs848.9 million in the quarter. Hindalco’s shares, which have

more than doubled this year, declined 2 per cent to Rs172.30 in Mumbai on Friday. The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex has climbed 2.7 per cent this year. The company will focus on reducing debt over the next three years as it targets record output of 1.25 million metric tonnes of aluminium in the 12 months to March, Managing Director Satish Pai said in July. — Bloomberg News

The company scooped the Best Oil and Gas Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Project for its support to Local Community Contractors (LCCs) and Super Local Community Contractors (SLCCs), Omani-owned companies supplying core services to the sector. And it also won the Best Practice Award for its early monetisation of new hydrocarbon discoveries through early development facilities at fields such as Tayseer, S AV I N G C L I M AT E

Rich nations told to shut coal plants NEW YORK: Rich countries must close all their coal-fired power plants by 2030 to have a chance of holding global warming to tolerable levels, a report from an environmental research group said. China would have to phase out the most polluting fossil fuel by 2040 and the rest of the world by 2050, according to Climate Analytics, a Berlin-based non-profit that is studying how nations can meet the emissions goals they agreed at United Nations talks in Paris last year. The findings illustrate the difficulty in achieving the UN goal of holding global warming to well-below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit). The world already has 8,175 coal plants and is building another 733, providing about 40 of all electricity. Envoys from more than 190 nations are meeting this week and next in Marrakech, Morocco, to discuss how to take forward the ambitions they set out in Paris. “Both shutting down existing coal and avoiding new coal build is absolutely essential to avoid devastating air pollution and climate impacts,” said Jennifer Morgan of the environmental group Greenpeace International. — Bloomberg News

Oilfield services PDO has also launched four SLCCs, which have over 9,300 shareholders drawn from its concession area. These provide core oilfield services such as well pulling hoists, flowline replacement and well services intervention and have a total capital value of OMR23.2 million. The Adipec Best Practice Award came after PDO took a strategic decision to support Oman by de-

veloping newly explored fields in the shortest time and at the lowest possible cost to support the Sultanate’s economy. “These awards show that we are staying true to our corporate vision to be renowned and respected for the excellence of our people and the value we create for Oman and all our stakeholders,” said Abdul-Amir Abdul-Hussein Al Ajmi, external affairs and value creation director of PDO. “Through the LCC and SLCC programmes, we have been able to give a direct stake to communities in the oil and gas industry and develop Omani skills and capabilities; and our drive for early monetisation of opportunities has generated accelerated revenue for the nation in challenging times,” he added.

Banks in India receive $30b in deposits as ATMs run dry 200,000 cash machines beforehand to help keep the announcement a secret, Jaitley said. The machines are being re-calibrated so that they can dispense new Rs500 and Rs2,000 notes, which do not fit into the existing cash trays in the ATMs.

Customers queued for hours to deposit or exchange the old bills and ATMs ran dry as Indian government abolished highdenomination banknotes on November 8

MUMBAI: Indian banks received Rs2 trillion ($29.8 billion) of cash after the government’s November 8 surprise move to abolish high-denomination banknotes, as customers queued for hours to deposit or exchange the old bills and ATMs ran dry. With the banned bills accounting for 86 per cent of money out of circulation, there is tremendous pressure on the nation’s banking system to replenish the cash. More than 70 million transactions were recorded through midday on November 12, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement late on Saturday. There’s adequate money in the currency chests at more than 4,000 locations and reconfiguration of dispensing ma-

chines will be completed within two weeks, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said. Lenders have been caught out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unexpected and widelypraised announcement of the withdrawal of Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes, part of a crackdown on tax evasion and the underground economy. Jaitley urged people not to rush to banks immediately and wait for a few days and to conduct financial transactions using electronic transfers, checks and credit and debit cards. “A big regret is that people are getting inconvenienced, but currency replacement of this magnitude will cause some problems,” Jaitley said at a press conference

Such a big currency replacement can’t be done overnight.” Benami property The government will take more steps to curb tax evasion, including action against benami property, Modi said at an event in Goa on Sunday. Benami is property actually owned by someone but held in the name of a third party. State Bank of India (SBI), the

country’s largest, got deposits worth Rs478.68 billion, Jaitley said. It handled Rs543.70 billion of cash transactions in all, including deposits, withdrawals and exchange of banknotes, starting on Thursday through 12:15pm on Saturday, Jaitley said. The government-owned lender and its associates account for about 20 per cent to 25 per cent of the nation’s banking system, he said. The government deliberately didn’t reconfigure the more than

The chief executive officer of the world’s largest container line says he is willing to lose money in the short term in exchange for longer-term market dominance.

M

aersk Line’s decision to go for market share in an unprofitable third quarter might “seem strange,” but “you need to consider the alternative,” CEO Soren Skou said in a phone interview. “The industry is consolidating and in such a situation you have to make sure you keep growing so you don’t lose your marketleading advantage.” “In the long term, the winners in this business will be those with the lowest costs, and low costs are achieved through scale,” said Skou, who’s also the CEO of Maersk Line’s parent, Copenhagenbased A P Moller-Maersk. “We want our market share to grow organically every year.” Maersk Line has reported a third-quarter net operating loss

after tax of $116 million compared with a profit by the same measure of $264 million a year earlier. Plunging freight rates outweighed a decline in unit costs. The shipping line increased volumes by 11 per cent in a quarter that only saw market growth of 1-2 per cent. The CEO said the 11 per cent growth rate “might have been a bit more than we planned,” but the August collapse of Hanjin Shipping Co. “gave us a lot of volume.” Maersk Line has about 15.5 per cent of the global container market, putting it ahead of Mediterranean Shipping Co.’s 13.4 per cent and CMA CGM SA’s 10.4 per cent, according to Alphaliner. Maersk also expects to sign an agreement to add South Korea’s Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. to its global 2M shipping alliance

“fairly soon,” according to chief commercial officer Vincent Clerc. “We are currently growing organically as fast as our biggest peers,” Skou said. “Large mergers can change that, but measured organically, we have matched the biggest peers.” The company is the “Saudi Arabia of the container market,” DNB Markets said in a note to clients. “The combination of strong volume growth but still low rates means we still believe Maersk Line will continue to use price to gain market share,” DNB said. Part of Maersk Line’s new strategy, revealed in September, is to add to its growth through acquisitions. Skou declined to comment on which specific targets management has identified. “If we see the right opportunity, we will strike,” he said. “We are

well capitalised and have a strong liquidity reserve, so we would be able to finance takeovers.” Japan’s three largest container lines said this week they plan to merge, marking the latest example of industry efforts to counter a decade of weak freight rates. Nippon Yusen KK, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. will have a combined 7 per cent of the world’s container-shipping trade if the deal goes through. “If you look at vessel prices and share prices, it is a fact that the container industry is priced at historical lows - perhaps an alltime low - which could mean that now is a good time to buy,” Skou said. “But if you buy something that does not generate any earnings, it could turn out to be a very expensive takeover.” – Bloomberg News

T

he latest Google drones have just started taking flight in the real world. But the team behind the technology is slowing down, trimming headcount and shelving initiatives as the experimental unit becomes the latest target of tightening budgets across parent company Alphabet. Project Wing, a unit of Alphabet’s X research lab, nixed a partnership with coffee giant Starbucks, according to people familiar with the decision. Following the departure of project leader Dave Vos in October, the unit also froze hiring and began asking some staff to seek jobs elsewhere in the company, according to some of those people. They asked not to be identified speaking about private company moves.

The decisions are part of a broader Alphabet effort to rein in spending and try to turn more experimental projects from loss-making risky bets into real businesses. Drones are in a particularly knotty place. US federal regulation does not yet allow for delivery, except in select test zones. However, Alphabet’s deceleration comes as other technology companies, including Amazon.com, plough money into drone delivery. Project Wing “Project Wing has the potential to remove a big chunk of the friction in how physical things are moved around in the world,” a spokeswoman for X wrote in an e-mail. “What we’re doing now is developing the next phase of our technology, and as always are thinking in a very broad way about all the potential use cases for delivery by unmanned aerial systems.” In August, Project Wing won approval for test flights at a US site, part of a White House effort to encourage unmanned vehicle delivery. Then in September, Alphabet announced a new foray: a partnership with Chipotle Mexican Grill to deliver food via drone at Virginia Tech. Robotic burrito drop-offs are a far cry from Google’s initial aims. The unit first wanted to deploy drones to deliver health-care items, such as medicine and heart defi-

brillators. After those plans were scrapped, the unit moved to food and other perishables. Alphabet was in advanced talks with Starbucks and had tested delivery with the coffee-chain operator, according to two people familiar with the plans. Those plans were nixed, largely over disagreements about the access to customer data that Alphabet wanted, according to a former X employee. Similarly, the unit was in talks to provide suburban grocery delivery in Ireland, where drone rules are less stringent than in the US Amazon’s Prime Air service, a competing effort to use unmanned vehicles, announced it was testing with the British government this summer. The status of Project Wing’s effort in Ireland is unclear. An X spokeswoman declined to comment on those talks, as well as the Starbucks partnership and hiring decisions. Shifting directions Project Wing, like many efforts inside X, has shifted directions several times. Early on, under the leadership of Massachusetts Institute of Technology roboticist Nicholas Roy, it operated like an academic research project, according to former employees. Vos, who joined Google in 2014, steered a different course. The aerospace veteran increased simulation testing

for the drones and implemented a new product review system that reflected standards in the aviation industry, which are more rigorous than software testing, the former employees said. Project Wing also hinted at aspirations aligned to Google’s mission — data collection along with delivery logistics. Last year, Vos detailed Project Wing’s ambition to run an air-traffic control hub for a drone-based economy. He described plans to equip drones with radio transponders that communicate with controllers and other aircraft by 2020. Then Vos suddenly left. Alphabet did not name a successor. The project now reports to Astro Teller, the longtime chief of X. Vos did not immediately respond to e-mails seeking comment on Tuesday. Teller is still making bold predictions for the technology. In an interview published on November 8 with The Verge, Teller said the drone programme could spell the end of an ownership society and “really dramatically, magically, change the world.” Financial scrutiny However, the drone team is now undergoing similar financial scrutiny as other Alphabet experimental arms, such as its Google Fiber and robotics units. Several Project Wing employees have received “90-day notices,” which are requests to find different jobs inside Alphabet before being terminated, according to one person familiar with the decision. Last November, Vos told an aviation conference that Project Wing planned to have a “commercial business up in running in 2017.” It is unclear if his exit and the staff changes will delay that timeline. Some in the nascent industry are sceptical that any company can move beyond test sites in the US in the next one or two years, given Federal Aviation Administration restrictions. “You’re not even allowed to ask for a waiver to fly beyond the visual line of sight if it’s delivery,” said Gretchen A. West, a drone specialist at law firm Hogan Lovells, who is not familiar with Project Wing’s plans. “Nobody knows how long it’s going to take.” — Bloomberg News

Yahoo! is investigating a new claim that user account data was obtained by a hacker, the latest security challenge for the company as it prepares for the planned acquisition of its core web services by Verizon Communications. Law enforcement authorities began sharing certain information they indicated was provided by a hacker who claimed it was Yahoo user account data, the company said on Wednesday in a regulatory filing. Yahoo said it’s analyzing the matter with the help of forensic experts. In the same filing, Yahoo also updated investors on a previously disclosed hack from 2014. In that incident, experts are looking at evidence that indicates a “state-sponsored actor” breached Yahoo’s system and could have gained user data by creating “cookies” that bypassed password protection, the company said in the filing. Yahoo doesn’t believe it is currently possible for the attackers to forge valid Yahoo Mail cookies, according to a source familiar with the matter. The company revealed the security incident in September, spurred by a hacker’s claim in July that led Yahoo to re-examine the 2014 breach, according to the filing. The continued investigation cost about $1 million during the third quarter, Yahoo said. An independent board committee is investigating how many employees at Yahoo knew about the breach by the state-sponsored actor, and when they knew about this, the company said in the filing. — Bloomberg News

Hon Hai’s quarterly profit beats analysts’ estimates Hon Hai Precision Industry’s quarterly earnings beat analysts’ estimates as it maintained a tight grip on costs amid the release of Apple’s latest iPhones. Apple’s main gadgets assembler reported an 8.7 per cent fall in net income to NT$34.6 billion ($1.1 billion) in the three months ended in September, Taipei-based Hon Hai said on November 11. That compares with the NT$33.8 billion average of analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Sales were little changed NT$1.075 trillion. The world’s biggest contract manufacturer of electronics has been deploying robots and boosting production efficiency to drive down costs as the smartphone market endures its worst year on record. Apple, its largest customer, shipped a betterthan-expected 45.5 million iPhones last quarter and has unveiled a new line of Mac computers. The US company is expected to move toward using more organic light-emitting-diode screens. “Apple’s new MacBook Pro and Watch should boost near-term momentum. Hon Hai is our top pick among iPhone assemblers,” Thompson Wu, an analyst with Credit Suisse Group AG in Taipei, wrote in a report ahead of the earnings release. — Bloomberg News

Alibaba-rival JD plans its own delivery drone fleet by 2017 From Amazon.com to Domino’s Pizza, technology giants and retailers have dreamed of drone deliveries for years. One Chinese e-commerce giant intends to make it a full-fledged reality by 2017. JD.com has drawn up plans for drones to ply 100 regular routes by the end of next year. Taking advantage of lessrestrictive regulations, it’s spent months testing its drones and from Friday -- the same day as China’s annual 24-hour online shopathon — it intends to start operating four routes delivering packages to rural residents on a trial basis. JD.com competes with Alibaba Group Holding in selling everything from smartphones to salami to a rising middle class. But unlike Alibaba, it operates much of the logistics pieces needed to convey its goods, a costly undertaking that’s prompted the company to look for ways to heighten efficiency. Drones could be the solution in hard-to-reach locales, where deliveries can cost up to six times more than a city trip because the denser populations help spread the expense. “By the end of next year we’ll hopefully have over 100 routes available and in operation,” said JD.com’s chief technology officer, Chen Zhang. “This is something we look at as a long-term project. The benefits are tremendous if we get it into the most expensive areas of China.” When a customer places their order, a package is sent from the warehouse or distribution point to a delivery station. Workers hook up the package to one of five drone types, which zip over to a rural village contractor who then makes the final delivery to the buyer’s doorstep. JD.com has a network of around 300,000 contractors, whom it calls promoters, to cover an estimated 600,000 villages. -Bloomberg News

Neck and back pain is a growing concern in Gulf, say specialists Millions of people suffer from several types of spinal disorders preventing them from working or even doing simple daily activities

MUSCAT: Back and neck pain is a major public health issue globally and Oman is no exception. It causes considerable loss of man hours of work and decreased productivity and contributes to morbidity in the population. Millions of people suffer from several types of spinal disorders preventing them from working or even doing simple daily activities. Dr Gowrishankar, who has recently joined the new American Spine Centre in Muscat and Madhur Bomb, general manager, Bahwan Healthcare Centre explain the causes, prevention and treatment advice for back pain in this article. How common is lower back pain? Lower back pain is a daily health challenge – 60 to 70% suffer throughout their lives. 1 in 4 suffer back pain at any point in time in their life. Statistics from a recent study in the UAE reveal that 65% of UAE residents suffer from lower back or neck pain and another new study on adults suffering from chronic low back pain

in the Gulf region has revealed that neuropathic pain is present in 55% of all cases.

successful and patients may still have some back pain post-surgery. As with all types of surgical procedures, these operations also carry a risk of potentially serious complications. In some cases, nerves near the spine can be damaged, resulting in problems such as numbness or weakness in a part of one or both legs or, in rare cases, some degree of paralysis.

What are the reasons for the back pain affecting many people these days? Lack of physical movement, poor sleeping posture, no regular exercise, and excess weight are the main factors contributing to neck and back pain. Worse yet, with seven to eight hours seated in front of a computer every weekday and another two to three hours on the road due to traffic, office-based workers are extremely likely to experience lower back or neck pain. A significant level of women also suffer from lower back pain due to non-adherence to physiotherapy post-pregnancy. What would you advise to working people who suffer such pain? Is there a better posture or activity? The simple answer is that we advise most people to get up and move, start exercising, take breaks from sitting, and learn to modify your environment to promote good posture and position. Reducing your body weight helps a lot in getting rid of the pain. In addition there are some specific stretches and simple exercises that can be done at home. I spend a lot of time on my smartphone, and it may sometimes give me pain in the neck that irradiate into my back. I have noticed that many people have the same pain due to the use of a smartphone or the laptop in a wrong position. Could you tell on how to relieve such pains? Unfortunately, the best answer

is to spend less time with your smartphones or laptops. That being said there are some specific stretches and strengthening techniques for both the back and the neck. One small but effective tip for laptop users is to get a bluetooth keyboard and set the laptop up on a raised surface where it is more at eye level. I’ve heard that bed rest is no longer recommended when I have back pain. Is this true? Yes. Movement is crucial for acute lower back pain. You also need to consult a dietician for body weight and food control, an orthopaedic and neuro surgeon for review and a physio is advised.

What are the treatment options for people suffering from acute/ chronic neck or back pain? Prior to starting any type of treatment, it is always advisable to first see an appropriately trained spine specialist to develop an appropriate treatment programme for your specific condition and medical history. Spinal disc problems can be treated with below options: 1. Pain medications - Oral steroids, muscle relaxants, anti-depressants as prescribed by your GP 2. Pain clinics – Combination of group therapy, exercises, extensive physiotherapy, relaxation and education about pain and the psychology of pain.

3. Spinal Traction - Form of decompression therapy that relieves pressure on the spine. 4. Surgery – Discectomy or Spinal fusion 5. IDD treatment – Computer controlled physiotherapeutic treatment that is FDA approved and 100% safe. A specific treatment regimen that combines the most optimal use of Disc decompression therapy (IDD), physiotherapy, dietary modification, exercise therapy and counselling. What are the implications of surgery? Surgery can help reduce pain caused by compressed nerves in the spine, but they are not always

What is IDD Treatment? Intervertebral Differential Dynamics (or more simply IDD) Therapy treatment is a non-surgical spinal decompression programme for low back pain, neck pain and related conditions. IDD is suitable for patients suffering with unresolved back pain, neck pain, leg pain (sciatica) or arm pain caused by spinal nerve root irritation. Most commonly, patients with bulging or herniated discs (‘slipped disc’), degenerative disc disease and chronic stiffness in the lower back are candidates for treatment. Each treatment lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour and patients will have a series of treatments typically spread over 4 to 6 weeks. This is to allow time for the body to adapt to treatment with a goal of progressively improving spine function. The IDD machines are also equipped for cervical treatment and have a special unit for neck pain. Treatment lasts 25 minutes and is precise, gentle and safe and is approved by US FDA. IDD treatment is being provided at its state-of-the-art American Spine Center in Muscat which has all the facilities to provide most comprehensive back and neck management programme and aims at bringing a paradigm shift in its approach to the residents of Oman.

Play washed out but Aussies hit with deluge of criticism MELBOURNE: Rain thwarted South Africa’s hopes of building their 86-run lead in the second Test against Australia on Sunday but a bigger deluge of criticism fell on the home side following their chaotic batting on day one in Hobart. Australia’s first innings dismissal for 85, their lowest Test total at home since 1984, rang alarm bells around a nation that, for all its experience of such failures overseas, remains far less comfortable with them occurring in its backyard. “Cape Town, Birmingham, Nottingham, Galle, and now Hobart. Like falling cities in a losing war, the scenes of Australia’s cricket disasters have come to our doorstep,” Malcolm Knox wrote in Fairfax newspapers on Sunday.

“The geography of decline presents a case that cannot be denied. In Australia’s case, the team failures have become frequent enough to suggest that the decline is irreversible.” The Bellerive blow-out followed Australia’s dismal collapse in Perth, where they lost 10 wickets for 86 runs to squander a dominant position before crumbling to a 177-run defeat. In the heart of maelstrom Captain Steve Smith, with an unbeaten 48, was the sole batsman to defy the Proteas’ marauding pace attack on a tricky wicket in Hobart. Joe Mennie, a debutant paceman, was the team’s second-highest scorer with 10.

Since the 3-0 whitewash in Sri Lanka, where Australia were skittled for 106 and 183 in the second Test defeat in Galle, coaches and former players have lined up to urge the team’s struggling batsmen to play their ‘natural game’. But barring the skipper, there has been scant evidence that their natural game can stand up to the rigours of a quality attack on a testing wicket. “The next away Ashes hardly bears contemplating. Today (Saturday) at Bellerive was as close as you can get to English conditions,” Andrew Faulkner wrote in The Australian newspaper. Pugnacious opener David Warner played his natural game and it delivered his wicket for the

cost of one run when he slashed needlessly at a wide ball and edged to the wicketkeeper. In the heart of the maelstrom at 17 for four, Callum Ferguson ran himself out, prompting his brother to storm out of the terraces in disgust, having flown in from England to watch his 31-year-old sibling’s long-awaited Test debut. ‘Find a way to grind’ The tail were also complicit, leaving Smith stranded after losing their wickets cheaply with rash strokes. Head coach Darren Lehmann conceded the team’s batting was in “crisis”, while Smith, behind closed doors, read his teammates the riot act.

“We all were (disappointed),” paceman Mitchell Starc, who was dismissed for four with a loose drive to gully, told state radio ABC on Sunday. “The message from Smithy was that ... everything we’ve spoken about has not translated into actions or results on the field. “We’ve just got to be better, we’ve got to find a way to grind. “One thing he said was you’ve got to be happy to score ugly runs sometimes. You don’t have to look good doing it.” Australia will again hope for rescue from their bowlers on Monday, when Temba Bavuma (38 not out) and Quinton de Kock (28 not out) resume with South Africa on 171 for five. - Reuters

England redeemed themselves, says Cook RAJKOT: England’s prospects in India were in doubt after their dismal tour of Bangladesh but the touring side proved themselves by running their hosts close for a draw in the opening Test, captain Alastair Cook said on Sunday. Cook and his men landed in India with bruised egos, having lost the second Test in Dhaka inside three days to settle for a 1-1 share of the series against Bangladesh, the world’s ninthranked Test team. However, they scored four hundreds in the match against world No. 1 Test side India and looked like the only team who could force a win in the contest. “We probably proved to everyone else that we can play,” Cook told reporters. “I said at the beginning of the tour that we have got some very talented players. “Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali, for example, and Joe Root is world class. The hundreds we set up, obviously it was a good toss to win, but the way we played to get 530 showed the character on a different wicket. “To score those runs was very pleasing and then we did 160 overs of hard graft to keep India below us. We did a lot of very good things, just couldn’t quite get over the line.” “As a group after what happened in Bangladesh I keep saying that if we play on those wickets we need to readjust,” said the 31-year-old, who scored his 30th hundred in Tests on Sunday. “On these wickets, it takes a bit of time to turn and it was pretty flat to start with. “I am confident we will score the runs and confident we can bowl well enough to put India under pressure if we hit the same standards.” - Reuters

SPORTS Defiant Kohli denies England SCOREBOARD

Kohli, India’s best batsman, then frustrated the touring side with a fifthwicket stand of 47 with Ashwin

RAJKOT: India captain Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on a defiant 49 in a tense final session to deny England victory and claim a draw in the opening test of the five-match series on Sunday. England captain Alastair Cook notched up his 30th Test hundred and declared his team’s second innings on 260 for three in the second session, to set India an improbable target of 310. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid, who picked up four wickets in the first innings, took another three as the

Steyn out for six months

Don’t litter a beautiful country like OMAN. Ensure proper disposal of garbage.

CAPE TOWN: South Africa’s fast bowler Dale Steyn has undergone surgery and will be out for at least six months after breaking a bone in his shoulder in the first Test in Australia earlier this month, Cricket South Africa said on Sunday. The 33-year-old Steyn returned home for the operation in Cape Town, which was performed on Thursday, and had a screw inserted in his right shoulder blade. South African team manager Mohammed Moosajee said he will be out for a minimum of six months before he can even attempt to bowl again. “It is crucial to give the injury enough time to heal and to make sure that he is completely pain-free before he starts bowling again. He will begin with his rehabilitation programme once the satisfactory bone healing has taken place. This is expected to be in a few weeks,” he said. “We are positive that he will make a successful return to international cricket.” - Reuters

were reduced to 132 for six with enough overs still left in the match for England to force a win. But Kohli added another crucial unbeaten stand of 40 in 10 overs for the seventh wicket with local boy Ravindra Jadeja, who remained unbeaten on 32, to deny the tourists. The hosts reached 172 for six when the captains shook hands for the match to end in a draw. The result, however, could have swung in England’s favour had they managed to hold on to their catches. Vijay, India’s highest scorer in the first innings with 126, was dropped on 13 by Ansari, who failed to hold on to a powerful return catch. The batsman went on to make 31. Ansari was the unlucky bowler again in his next over when Stuart Broad dropped a much easier catch from firstinnings centurion Pujara at point with the batsman on 10. Pujara was dismissed on l8, given out leg before off Rashid with replays showing the ball had pitched outside the leg stump and the decision would have been overturned on review. - Reuters

MUSCAT: After three successful years, National Finance, one of the leading financial companies, and International Heavy Enterprises (IHE), the official dealers of Volvo Trucks and Buses, are ready to host the fourth edition of the Open Golf Tournament at the Ghala Golf Club on November 25. “As golfers prep up for the tournament in an endeavor to bag the winning trophy, this year there will be numerous other trophies to be won,” the organisers said in a statement. The tournament will follow a Stableford scoring format with gross and net prizes for the men, ladies and junior divisions. Along with prizes for the nearest to pin and longest drive, there will also be awards for the front and back net winners too. After an overwhelming response in the previous years, National Finance and Volvo Trucks and Buses are keenly looking forward to another great event. Robert Pancras, CEO of National Finance, said: “Our tournament has golfers from all cat-

egories signing up for it; we have players from different age groups and varied skill levels. We see incredible sportsmanship spirit though the day as golfers from different backgrounds get together to put their best foot forward for a healthy challenge.” “The tournament is open to all golfers with a verifiable handicap. Encouraging the sport amongst all golfers, members of the Ghala Golf Club as well as non-members can register for the tournament. Ghala Golf Club members can enroll with an entrance fee of RO. 8 whereas non-members can register for a fee of RO. 15 which would also entitle them to be a part of the grand gala dinner and an exclusive goodie bag from the organizers,” the organisers said. “Showing strong support to developing junior golf and to induce the spirit of golf amongst the youth, junior golfers are also encouraged to enroll for the tournament at absolutely no cost.” Golfers interested in registering for the event can call the Ghala Pro Shop on 92194957.
