ESL Reading Guide “Ali and his camera” Answer key 1. Ali is the protagonist of the short story.

2. He is from Istanbul, in Turkey. We don’t know where Ali was born but we can assume that he’s Turkish.

3. He lives near the Blue Mosque. (See photograph in the color version of this reading guide) 4. After school, Ali comes home and sits at the window. He looks at the boats. They are going out to sea.

5. No, he doesn’t.

6. Ali take photographs in his head/mind.

7. Ali´s father is a greengrocer’s.

8. Ali´s father sells and buys vegetables and fruits.

9. Yes, he does. / Ali helps his father in the shop.

10. No. He doesn’t take photos of his father because he hasn’t got a camera.

11. Ali ask his father to buy him a camera.

12. No, he doesn’t. We find that Ali’s father hasn’t got enough money to buy him what he wants because they are poor.

13. Every afternoon, Ali looks at the houses near the water. He watches the men on the bridge/fishermen. He watches the boats. He watches, and he sees photos in his head.

14. Ali is going to work in the old market to make money to buy himself a camera.

15. The old market is in the old city of Istanbul.

16. People sell and buy food in the old market.

17. Ali goes to the old market every afternoon after school. He carries bags for people.

18. Ali puts the money he earns by working in the old market in his pocket.

19. Ali going to take photographs of his parents on the balcony (mother)/in Ali’s father shop (father) when he has a camera.

20. An old man ask Ali to carry a heavy bag for him in the old market.

21. A big and strong man follows Ali and the old man in the old market.

22. Yes, he is. Suddenly, the big man takes the bag from Ali’s hand and starts to run away.

Ali runs after him. The man hits Ali. Ali falls down, and his money falls out of his pocket.

The man puts down the bag. Then he takes Ali’s money and runs away. Ali gives the bag to the old man.

23. The thief takes Ali´s money away.
