Tobermory: Tip of the Peninsula

The village consists of two deep, natural harbours called Little Tub & Big Tub Tobermory was originally named Collins Harbour, but by the 1850s the Scottish immigrants who were fishing the area had renamed it Tobermory for their seacoast fishing and diving village on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. Today, the village still maintains the charm of a fishing village from another era. Take a leisurely walk around Little Tub Harbour, follow the bricked sidewalks past the numerous flowerbeds and visit the many quaint and unique shops, stores, restaurants and galleries.

Two miles south of the village of Tobermory is the St. Edmunds Museum. The museum is in a settlement school built in 1898. The main floor deals with the fishing, lumbering and farming of the ancestors. The second floor deals with the rich marine history. There is also a log cabin built in 1875 and totally furnished like a 19th century home. Admission is by donation, and well worth the visit.

On the east side of the harbour is a boardwalk which allows you a great view of the ferry dock and the Chi-

Cheemaun as it steams into shore or disappears off the horizon, heading out of Big Tub Harbour enroute to Manitoulin Island.

Big Tub Harbour is the deepest natural harbour on the Great Lakes and is home to two shipwrecks.

The Sweepstakes, a schooner built in 1867 which sank in 1885, and the City of Grand Rapids built in 1870 and sank October of 1907. Both vessels are visible from the glass bottom tour boats that run out of Tobermory from May – October, weather permitting. These boats also have tours which will drop you off at Flower Pot Island to allow a few hours to explore.

Bruce Peninsula National Park The 127 km² park is located near the tip of the Bruce Peninsula and can be accessed from Highway 6 on Cyprus Lake Road, Emmett Lake Road or Dorcas Bay Road.

The park’s shoreline cliffs are a part of the spectacular Niagara Escarpment, which in many places are eroded to create caves, unusual rock shapes, pitting and overhangs.

As a consequence, each location along this 20 km Georgian Bay shore has remarkable features. The Bruce Trail follows the shoreline climbing up 40 metre high cliffs providing some of the best hiking and scenic lookouts in Ontario.

The park has the largest block of contiguous forest in southwestern Ontario, which is critical in maintaining the peninsula ecosystem. The Bruce Peninsula is home to 42 species of orchids that are at their peak in mid-June. Huge waves of migrating birds – everything from Blackburnian Warblers to Rough-legged Hawks – move through the park during spring and fall. The Cyprus Lake area features a 242-site campground including 10 yurt accommodations, swimming and canoeing on Cyprus Lake and hiking on an extensive network of trails.

During the summer months, visitation to the park is high with parking lots reaching capacity daily. Parking is limited for visitors wishing to hike to the Grotto area and there is no shuttle or taxi service. New timed parking system is in place for the Grotto. Plan ahead before making the trip to the park and once here, make the Visitor Center your first stop to get information on parking availability and things to do. Consider visiting the park in the spring or fall and take advantage of the orchids in bloom or the fall colours! If you’re planning on staying overnight, it is important to make your reservations ahead of time as availability is extremely limited during the peak season. Make campsite reservations by calling 877.737.3783 or visit www.reservations.pc.gc.ca. Don’t forget to plan ahead!

Fathom Five National Marine Park

Canada’s first national marine conservation area encompassing 113 km² consists of 20 islands and part of the lake bottom and waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. It is very much alive, being an ecosystem that includes all the aquatic and island life, the water, and the myriad of food chains that are its engines. Because water flows freely within the Great Lakes system, its health depends a lot on what is happening elsewhere in the basin. Fathom Five is clean and clear and home to many species of fish and over 20 shipwrecks! The park has gained a reputation for excellent scuba diving and snorkelling. Divers must register at the Park Canada Visitor Centre or either of the local dive shops located in Tobermory.

Flowerpot Island

The jewel of Fathom Five National Marine Park, Flowerpot Island is famous for its iconic natural rock pillars. It is a must-see visitor attraction. Come to marvel at rock pillars, visit an historical lightstation, swim in crystal-clear waters and enjoy a relaxing picnic – all in one spot. With ongoing repairs and improvements to island facilities, the stairs to the cave will be closed. The five km trip to the island begins in Tobermory’s picturesque harbour. During spring, summer and fall, tour boats operate on a regular schedule if the weather is favourable. While cruising to the island, you are surrounded by the beautiful waters of Canada’s first National Marine Park. Plan to spend a half-day or so on Flowerpot Island to have ample time to explore and relax. Six tenting sites are available for primitive camping (registration at the Visitor Centre in Tobermory is required in advance). Campfires are not permitted on the island.

Help keep the island clean by using the designated garbage receptacles at the trail head, or better yet, carry your garbage off the island. escapetogreybruce.ca • 2019 9

The Bruce Coast, of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, is home to 13 distinctive lighthouses and heritage sites. From Point Clark in the south to Tobermory in the north, the Bruce Coast Lighthouse tour will take you down dirt roads, to the water’s edge and on boat rides to see these sites. escapetogreybruce.ca

Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southampton – Home of the relocated Stokes Bay Lighthouse & interactive marine heritage exhibits.

Chantry Island Lighthouse is located on Chantry Island which is aso a federal migratory sanctuary. Take a tour of the Light Keepers cottage, and then climb the 106 steps to the top of the lighthouse.

Cove Island in Tobermory – Sail past this historic site in Fathom Five National Marine Park aboard the Ferry.

Flowerpot Island Light Station and Light Keepers Home – Take a Glass Bottom boat tour from Tobermory to the island in Fathom Five National Marine Park.

Lion’s Head Lighthouse – Originally built in 1903. It was rebuilt many times due to the high-energy weather of Georgian Bay. In 1969 the lighthouse was replaced by an automated light. Then in 1983 some ambitious students built a replica which stands 28 feet high, using the original blue prints from the 1903 structure.

The visitor centre is the “front door” to the two national parks on the Bruce. Friendly on site staff are there to help you plan your stay and provide up to date details on parking, interpretive programs, and other attractions throughout the region.

As you walk through the gallery, you’ll learn about the different geological forces that have shaped the peninsula and the First Nations peoples that have lived on the Bruce Peninsula since time immemorial.

Learn about the animals and plants that call this home and the ecological connections that support the largest contiguous forest in Southwestern Ontario. Interactive and multi-media displays will take you underwater to explore the shipwrecks and connect you with the rich marine heritage of the region.

Before heading out on the trail, relax in the high definition theatre for a virtual adventure through the parks, from deep shipwrecks to a helicopter high above the cliff-rimmed shoreline of Georgian Bay. Outside, climb the 20 metre tower for a panoramic view of the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, the surrounding waters and islands of Fathom Five. The Bruce Trail crosses the deck of the visitor centre and following the trail past the tower will take you to one of the most scenic segments of shoreline on Georgian Bay. To get to the visitor centre, turn off Highway 6 and follow Chi sin tib dek Road across from the RBC bank in Tobermory. Or enjoy the 5 minute walk from downtown by following Head Street and the Bruce Trail. The visitor centre is from May to October. And a there is an entry fee. Orchid Festival & Singing Sands Singing Sands is located on Dorcas Bay, just west of Highway 6, about a 10 minute drive south from Tobermory. This is a popular spot because of the shallow sand beach for swimming and the abundance of wildflowers, including orchids, which grow in a diverse array of habitats. There are 44 varieties of orchids found here.

If you are a wildflower lover, visit from late May through late June to see the succession of blooms. Sign up for the annual Bruce Peninsula Orchid Festival at www.orchidfest.ca which takes place May 31–June 2, 2019.

Lion’s Head is located on the shores of Isthmus Bay and sits on the 45th parallel, halfway to the North Pole.

The villages’ central location on the Peninsula makes it ideal for exploring the Bruce Peninsula. It was named for the rock formation located on the east escarpment. The first settlers who waded ashore, having arrived by boat, thought it resembled a lion’s head in profile. Further into the harbour, you will find a great marina and docking facility, a sandy beach with a playground.

Come and view the rock face of the “Lion’s Head,” from the observation deck at the Lighthouse, where mechanical binoculars have been installed to provide you with a close up view. Come down at dusk and join other astronomers who are eager to share their knowledge of the dark skies, on Friday and Saturday nights. The stars are so bright and plentiful you’ll think you can almost reach out and touch them. Lion’s Head is designated as a Dark Skies community and home to Bayside Astronomy.

Harbourside Music, hosts free concerts on Friday evenings during July and August. On Saturdays, there is a farmer’s market in the morning down at the beach, which runs from Victoria Day till Thanksgiving weekend.

Lion’s Head has long been a favourite hiking destination on the Bruce Trail, thanks to its accessibility, rugged terrain and expansive views. The trails are challenging but not formidable and most routes can be enjoyed in an afternoon. A parking lot on Moore Street provides access to the trailhead.

Rising through the forest and meadow, the trail climbs up through cedars and along the limestone cliffs past several lookouts, until it reaches the highest elevation at the Lion’s Head Lookout. From this spectacular vista, one can see down to the Village of Lion’s Head and Isthmus Bay to the south-west, sweep around the whole of the coast of Whipporwill Bay to the west, and reach across to White Bluff and further north, to Smokey Head. Soaring birds, a bracing wind and the turquoise clear waters far below make this a view to remember.

Many orchids and rare ferns are found in the two parks: Petrel Point, just north of Red Bay,and Red Bay Conservation Area at Reid Point, west of the Red Bay Park and beach. Sprinklings of pink, mauve, red, blue and yellow that fill the wetland through the seasons can only inspire a passion for nature. Petrel Point Nature Reserve is a spectacular example of Great Lakes Coastal Meadow Marsh, a very rare habitat. Changes in elevation in the fen separate distinct communities of plants, many of them are rare.

Petrel Point is home to many unusual wildflowers due to its basic acidic groundwater which is the result of dissolved calcium carried upwards from the limestone bedrock. A dense white cedar swamp surrounds the meadow marshes.

This meadow marsh supports a diverse family of carnivorous plants, including Horned Bladderworts, Sundews and Pitcher Plants. Orchid lovers will find Showy Lady Slippers, Rose Pogonias, Grass-pink, Purple-fringed Orchids and Broad-leaved Twayblade scattered throughout. Due to the delicacy of the plant life, visitors must explore from the walkways provided.

Bruce Peninsula’s Basecamp!

As you break over the hill going south into the town of Wiarton, witness the panoramic crystal blue waters of Colpoy’s Bay. This sheltered bay is a favourite with sailing enthusiasts and fishermen alike. The Bruce Trail runs through town with easy access for day or extended hikes. There also is a spiral staircase that leads you up to Spirit Rock Conservation Area. The name Spirit Rock derives from a legend involving an Indian maiden. The park encompasses 87 hectares, and features the historical ruins of the Corran, a 17 room mansion built in 1881 by Alexander McNeill, a Federal Member of Parliament for the North Bruce Riding from 1881-1901. The property is managed by the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority.

Bluewater Park contains the Tourist Information Centre, located in the old Wiarton Train Station. There is a children’s playground, a small beach, a splashpad, pool and a fitness trail. In addition to Wiarton Willie, the town is home to many unique stores and services and is the perfect spot to shop before heading north. Its bevy of beautiful historic homes and buildings are also worth exploring.

It’s one of those Grey Bruce summer days where you wake up and it’s already 23 degrees; by mid day the mercury will be soaring to 30.

Sure, you could crank the AC and stay inside, but if you’re from Grey Bruce, you’re more likely to hit the beach.

Northwinds Beach, The Blue Mountains – This busy sand beach is centrally located by Blue Mountain. Popular SUP, kayak and swimming spot.

Cedar Hill Beach, Wiarton – A secluded, treasure this cobbled beach has amazing views of islands and Niagara Escarpment outcroppings. Very popular with scuba divers.

Memorial Park, Meaford – Take the Georgian trail and head down to this sandy beach located in the heart of Meaford.

Incredible Paddling Paddle our Rivers

Whether you’re looking for family friendly flat-water or fast-moving whitewater, there’s a paddle that’s perfect for you. Load up your canoe or kayak and head for the Saugeen River. This well-known paddle is a local’s favourite and has a variety of put-ins from Durham to Southampton. The Sauble River also offers a nice paddle from Concession 15 to Lake Huron. You will have to either wrap up at Sauble Falls or portage around to finish at the shoreline. The Beaver River offers a variety or routes with shuttles and rentals available from Free Spirit Tours or Eagle Adventure Experiences both located in Heathcote. The Sydenham River in Owen Sound is a great option for beginners wanting to rent and paddle out from Harrison Park.

Sea Kayaking Hotspots

If you’re not looking for a point A to point B paddle, then taking a sea kayak out on Lake Huron or Georgian Bay is another great option. As with any open water, check the weather and ask local outfitters for advice first. In Bruce County, a paddle to Chantry Island in Southampton is amazing on a calm day. Try Cameron Lake or Cyprus Lake in the Bruce Peninsula National Park. The shallow waters of the Fishing Islands in Oliphant are a unique experience or paddle over the shipwrecks in Tobermory’s Fathom Five National Marine Park.

In Grey County, Northwinds Beach in Craigleith is a great place to put in. Paddle to the small island to the north, head west towards the Shale Beach or hire a guide to help you find the wreck of the Mary Ward. Lake Eugenia has a public boat launch and this manmade lake offers some great fishing.

An increasingly popular way to paddle our rivers and lakes in Grey Bruce, stand-up paddleboarding offers both a unique view of the water you’re gliding over and a truly relaxing experience. Rentals are available in Sauble Beach if you want to explore Lake Huron and at Blue Surf in Craigleith if you’d like to put in at Northwinds Beach and explore Georgian Bay. If you have your own board, SUPing a local river is another unique experience, just be sure that water levels will permit safe passage over rocks and obstacles.

Come for the View, Stay for the Culture We all have that one friend who gets themselves in trouble, is a constant liability of sorts, and sometimes says and does things in public that make problems for all of us.

Sound because of its flaws, because of its stubbornness, and because of its regional reputation as a town stuck in a mid 1980s time warp. I didn’t always love this place, but I’ve made a choice to stick with it - and I’ll tell you why.

That friend may or may not know the impact of their actions - or inactions - and we typically respond to their behaviorisms in one way: we stick up for them, but we sometimes take on that task begrudgingly and with a grain of salt. That friend may not be perfect, but they’re our imperfect friend.

See what I’m getting at?

OS is much more than the culmination of its downtown core, its storied shoreline, its geographic location, and its budding local culture - and yet, it’s these pillars of existence that make the Scenic City one of the most unique places in Ontario.

But here’s the rub: I haven’t always thought this way, and I still don’t on a consistent basis; you see, I love Owen

Where else can you attend a tractor pull and a 4H Livestock Show before heading off to a world-class electronic music event next door to a vegan restaurant? Where else in Ontario are people discussing the future of fibre optic rural broadband expansions while simultaneously chatting about the annual salmon run? Where in the same breath can you describe a place that has the historical reputation as a hard-drinking, rough and tumble port town - but receives an Innovative Community Award from the Economic Developers Council of Ontario in its modern day?

charisma and a new school dedication to innovation and the evolution of ideas. It’s infectious. While we reside in a space that’s not technically considered the north - we share some key aspects of northern culture that help shape our approach to life.

Something break? From an old transmission to municipal economic policy, Owen Sound’s population isn’t scared to roll up its sleeves in an attempt to fix, or at least talk about how to fix itself. Not always agreeably, mind you - but the authenticity of our will to try is what’s important. Owen Sound gets down on itself easily, but it always finds a way to pull up its bootstraps, and I dig that.

Geography

I’m talking about much more than the pretty pictures of clear waters, sunshine, and happy people in idyllic locations. Every time I think about moving away, I pause and wonder what I would do without it. I’ve always liked Guelph, but the lack of

big water is a deal-breaker. I love me some time in Muskoka, but I also enjoy not fighting for a parking space every weekend.

Geologically, we’re really no different than the escarpment communities of Hamilton, Grimsby, or even those of the Door Peninsula in Wisconsin that follow the exposed dolomitic limestone of the Niagara Escarpment through the entirety of the Great Lakes region — but something about our geography helps usher in an aura of companionship and arrival. This place feels familiar, feels like it’s been expecting you.

As a result, many people find themselves intrinsically tied to this place and the spirit of its environment. This land is special and has a distinct voice of its own that becomes a confidante to many, an old friend and ally to others, and a worthy adversary to others still. Our geography is united by the water, rock, flora, and fauna that we live

with, but it’s the way these spaces make us feel that’s unique to Owen Sound. The escarpment is both a divider and a protector. The bay is both a formidable opponent and a good listener.

museums, pristine natural wilderness, art galleries, technology and modern infrastructure, festivals, concerts, wildlife, trails, microbreweries, international cuisine, and free downtown main street parking.

Rareness

Owen Sound isn’t perfect, but it always has been worth the fight. It’s behind in some aspects - miles ahead in others - but one thing it’s not is a pretender.

Owen Sound plays to its strengths and is working to maximize its potential where it can - and that energy is what makes it the gem that’s gaining serious traction as a nationally recognized homegrown tourist attraction off the beaten path.

There’s little doubt this place is made of the good stuff.

Like I said - I haven’t always loved this place as a local. It can be frustrating. Perplexing. Downright backward - but so can your imperfect friend be - and you’d never turn your back on them, would you?

I suspect the ways many of us interact with this town is no different.

Tourists and visitors come back year after year because they get something from this area they can’t find elsewhere; whether it be as profound as a world-class sunset or as subtle as someone holding the door for them at the coffee shop. Other people realize the statistical anomaly that is Owen Sound — so many epic details and opportunities in one spot is baffling;

Everyone close their eyes for a second. Imagine, in your minds’ eye, one of your friends, a cousin, your sibling home from school, or a city-slicker who’s visiting the Scenic City.

Take a deep breath in, and try to stay calm as you hear them mutter everyone’s favourite outdated saying … “There’s nothing to do here.”

Yeah, OK there, bud. 21,000 people choose to live and play in the largest city-center on the entirety of Georgian Bay because we share a cultural affinity for apathy. You smacked that nail on the head, let’s call ‘er a day.

That saying should say: “there’s nothing to do here because I couldn’t get tickets to the thousands of events, festivals, concerts, and cultural happenings in town quick enough,” or “there’s nothing to do here because I couldn’t get a reservation at one of the mind-blowingly good restaurants here.”

It’s the second part of that saying that people all too often neglect. I live here - and my schedule is booked, man - so what are you doing differently? Besides not looking, asking around, or trying overall, I mean. There’s loads to do here - so I’m going to spill a few local - and not so local - secrets so we can lay that saying to rest once and for all.

You may know the ins and outs of the daylight hours here, but what about when the sun goes down and the happy hour regulars depart the watering holes? Cue downtown.

Fancy a Crystal? Head to Jason’s Pub for a bottle of some of the rarest publicly available and most celebrated suds in Grey Bruce. Newbie spot Mudtown Station on the east shore

of the harbour is home to a revolving door of local craft beer creations made in-house courtesy of owner/ brewmaster Morag Kloeze, and Casero Kitchen Table is busy serving up incredible, authentic Mexican fare crafted with local ingredients, mezcal flights, and even hosts the occasional (and wildly popular) Trivia Night event.

Jazzmyn’s is an Owen Sound classic, boasting an old school pub vibe with some seldom seen pints being offered up, alongside a great late-night tapas menu, live music, and a killer outdoor patio. Relative newcomer Sizzlin’ occupies the old Avalon, or Chaise Lounge location (depending on how long you’ve been here) and features the only roof-top patio in the region complete with live music, and a great kitchen offering mouth-watering late-night grub.

The City is no slouch itself, offering a Canada Day fireworks celebration on the waterfront that’s second to none, and an outdoor movie night program that runs all season in various locations throughout town, including Harrison Park. They also host the coveted Harbour Nights Concert Series at The Visitor Centre every Sunday eve, and are eagerly welcoming the return of Harbourfest for 2019 with musical performances, a beer garden, food, and all the extra expected summer accouterment.

The Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival is a staple of summertime in Owen Sound, residing at the unique Georgian Bay amphitheatre at Kelso Beach Park. Their Friday and

Saturday night headliners - and the leading acts at the legendary Down By the Bay tent can be heard all over town and draw attendees from all over North America. In the past few years, some big names to grace the stage include Bahamas, Joel Plaskett, Buffy St. Marie, Whitehorse, Serena Ryder, and Sarah Harmer.

Last, and certainly not least - the allegorical and mythicized “Fish Tent.”

The annual Salmon Spectacular Fishing Derby championed by the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association is a beautifully brash, down-home representation of summertime on the Great Lakes. The fish are running, the anglers are telling stories, there’s music, fish fry’s, more music, cold beer and good cheer, prizes, games, and more. Hear, hear.

What this article doesn’t include are the regular weekly pop-up opportunities to attend a concert, a community event, a fundraiser, a golf tournament, or whatever else. So listen - when I hear people mention there’s nothing to do here, it really grinds my gears. If you believe that jazz, maybe it’s time to open your eyes and remove the fingers that have been so firmly planted in your ears.

Locals don’t live here because they’re overly apathetic. And tourists don’t come here in droves because they enjoy being bored - if anything, we’ve got more to do than we have time for. So join us, and contribute to the new culture of this place - one of good cheer community, togetherness, and fellowship.

Owen Sound: The Arts Our Local Galleries One of Canada’s most renowned artists, Tom Thomson grew up on the outskirts of Owen Sound in the late 1800s and the town has been attracting and creating artists ever since. The rugged, rural landscape continues to inspire and thankfully, the community embraces artists and their work wholeheartedly. The north side of the alley was a collaboration between graffiti artist Billy Goodkat and local students, while the south side of the alley was created by local artists and sponsored by the Bleeding Carrot. This is a great little spot to stroll through and take the ultimate selfie.

A classy historic venue that not only features the talented performing arts scene, but also showcases various talented visual artists in our cultured arts community as well.

Bliss Studio is a privately operated contemporary gallery next to the Roxy Theatre with a mission to feature established and emerging local artists – and they have fun while doing it!

Hosting workshops in printmaking, drawing and painting, they’re usually open from Tuesday to Saturday from noon to six, but they officially state, they’re open by chance or appointment. Best to call ahead at 226-268-5404.

In Grey County, they are one of our biggest draws—with people driving great distances to experience the 9 waterfalls on our tour. With the Niagara Escarpment crossing the County, rivers ultimately plunge into the valley below, creating amazing photographic opportunities, epic scenic lookouts and places of great peace and beauty.

The Grey County Waterfall Tour features McGowan Falls, Hoggs Falls, Eugenia Falls, Walter’s Falls, Inglis Falls, Weavers Creek Falls, Jones Falls, Indian Falls, and the Holstein Dam. As an added bonus, wrap up your tour with a visit to Grey Roots Museum and Archives. Visit the historic Moreston Village, check out their exhibits and admire their unique indoor waterfall. This self-guided route links all 9 waterfalls and can be completed by car or motorcycle in a few days or enjoyed by making individual stops throughout the year.

Water flow peaks in spring and early summer, offering the best viewing and photography opportunities. Plan to pack your camera (believe it or not some of the best photos are taken on cloudy days), sturdy hiking shoes and the Waterfalls of Grey County brochure complete with maps, directions and descriptions of each waterfall on the tour.

Our Waterfalls at a Glance Owen Sound Area Waterfalls Inglis Falls: This 18-metre high cascade waterfall is located just a short drive from Owen Sound and is accessible during all four seasons. A modest entry fee is charged by Grey Sauble Conservation, for parking during the summer months.

Jones Falls: Located just outside the City of Owen Sound in Springmount, this 12-metre cascade is located on the Bruce Trail and is accessible in spring, summer and fall.

Indian Falls: The most remote waterfall on the tour, this 15-metre plunge waterfall is located just outside the city at Indian Falls Grey Sauble Conservation Area. This waterfall is not winter accessible.

Weavers Creek Falls: Accessed through Harrison Park near downtown Owen Sound. Weavers Creek is a unique waterfall featuring a plunge and a cascade in one. It can be viewed from a boardwalk at the south west corner of the park and is accessible in all seasons. The waterfall is on private property, so please be respectful and stay on the boardwalk.

Waterfalls Around the County Walter’s Falls: Located in the village of Walter’s Falls, this 14-metre plunge waterfall is a beauty. Open four seasons, hike or snowshoe the Walter’s Creek Side Trail on the Bruce Trail or just view it from the balcony of The Falls Inn. Holstein Dam: Located in the Holstein Egremont Park, this cascade waterfall is formed when the Norman Reeves Creek exits the historic millpond. Open during all four seasons, you can explore the park and the village in one day.

Eugenia Falls: Just outside the village of Eugenia, this 30-metre cascade waterfall is steeped in history. The site of a short-lived gold rush, the falls once supported five mills and was the site of Ontario’s second hydroelectric plant. The falls are open in spring, summer and fall.

Hoggs Falls: This hidden gem is located on the Bruce Trail between the villages of Flesherton and Kimberley. This fourseason plunge waterfall is just a short five-minute hike from the parking lot.

McGowan Falls: Just outside the village of Durham, this three-metre cascade waterfall is part of the Durham Conservation Area. Visit the falls and stop for a swim at the sandy beach. This waterfall is open all four seasons.

*There is a small parking fee at the Inglis Falls location during the summer.

Make a road trip this summer to the Tom Thomson Art Gallery to explore Trains, Planes & Automobiles…and boats! Artist Richard Watts creates unique latex castings of the landscape to contemplate environmental issues in Earth Etchings. The Gallery celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing with By the Light of the Silvery Moon. All shows run to midSeptember.

In the fall, take a trip around the bay with, Footprints in Time: Painting Around Georgian Bay, and explore the interdisciplinary installation by Métis artist Patrick DeCoste, 13 Moons and a Canoe.

Of course, no visit would be complete without seeing the Gallery’s fine works by Tom Thomson.

The Township of Georgian Bluffs is proud to be the sole owner of the Wiarton Keppel International Airport.

The Wiarton Keppel International Airport is a Transport Canada Certified Airport and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The airport can accommodate a variety of aircraft including modern business jets, which provides an opportunity to business and leisure travelers to fly directly and conveniently to the Grey Bruce region.

The airport receives business/ leisure flights from Montreal, Denver, Pittsburg, Washington, New York and other major cities throughout the year.

The Township and FLYGTA have introduced scheduled passenger flights between the Wiarton Keppel International Airport and the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport four days a week beginning on May 24th.

The schedule service allows for business, tourism and pleasure travel.

Grey Roots Museum & Archives tells the unique stories of beautiful Grey County. Located just south of Owen Sound on Grey Road 18, the facility features six exhibit galleries, archives, and a ten acre living history site.

The featured exhibit this summer is Under the Canopy: Animals of the Rainforest. This amazing exhibit focuses on rainforest ecology and features some of the real live animals that call this ecosystem home. Meet a red-footed tortoise, visit with a marmoset, and marvel at a panther chameleon.

The museum’s other galleries showcase original exhibits including Surviving the Unthinkable: Citizen Soldiers of Grey, and a stunning new in house exhibit in our permanent gallery: Voices of Grey.

Moreston Heritage Village is open daily July and August.

Stop in and chat with costumed volunteers, or explore the village on your own with an audio tour.

Wrap up your visit with a locally made treat or treasure from the museum store and café, or relax with a daily film in the 75 seat theatre.

Community trails are a great place to take a hike with all generations of your family. Community trails can be found in Chesley, Flesherton, Georgian Bluffs, Hanover, Kincardine, Point Clark, Walkerton, Meaford, Thornbury, Collingwood and Port Elgin.

Ride Grey Bruce:

Take the time to just be Scenic views of turquoise water and smooth windy roads are some of the reasons why motorcycle riders flock to Grey Bruce from spring through fall. As soon as the snow makes its’ long awaited departure and the rain washes the sand away, the heartiest of riders hit the roads. Lucky for you, one of the most iconic roads in the area has been recently repaved.

You can now enjoy Grey Road 1 from Kemble to Wiarton on fresh blacktop. Effortlessly glide around the smooth turns and take in the glimpses of Georgian Bay and the Niagara Escarpment offered to you along the way.

The ride isn’t over once you reach Wiarton; keep heading north through town and swiftly get off the highway and onto Bruce Road 9. Some more big turns, hills and epic views await you. As you travel along, pay close attention to your senses heading north towards Lion’s Head. The beauty of being on a bike is that you get to feel, see and smell your environment in a way unlike anything else. On this route, you may feel a change in temperature which lets you know that while you are travelling parallel to the water, you are approaching one of the inlets.

Take some time to drive down towards one of the bays along the way. Sydney Bay, Hope Bay and Barrow Bay area all hemmed in by the imposing escarpment which is topped with a vivid green as the

trees bud in spring. Take the time to get off your bike and just be. Be still for a moment while surrounded by this gorgeous natural gift. It’s amazing to take in the sounds of your surroundings after you turn off your bike—you seem to be able to hear everything without the sound of the motor running. At Lion’s Head there is a beach pavilion with washrooms and picnic tables for your enjoyment.

Head back south to the liquor store corner, then turn right to get back to Ferndale, and onto highway 6 and continue north to Tobermory.

Another colourful ride awaits you during the autumn months in Grey County. The winding roads and stunning colours of Grey Road 13 in the Beaver Valley are sure to impress.

Visit the majestic Eugenia Falls, just one of the waterfalls on our tour.

When it comes to providing some of the best angling opportunities in the Province, Grey Bruce ranks near the top.

Whether you’re looking to troll the big waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay for salmon, wade a trout stream or spend a summer’s day playing one of the many inland lakes for warm water sport fish, you can find it here!

Big water anglers can score on both salmon and trout during the open water seasons on Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. Popular ports to access the deep waters include Meaford, Thornbury, Owen Sound, Lion’s Head, Wiarton, Southampton, Port Elgin, Kincardine and Sauble Beach.

Offshore trolling for Chinook Salmon begins in the spring and summer as soon as the ice leaves local bays and boat launches. The Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular and the Chantry Chinook Classic are two major derbies held in the region each summer.

In-land angling opportunities are endless for summertime anglers. Both largemouth and smallmouth bass provide anglers of all ages with incredible action from both the boat and on-shore. Pike, panfish, walleye, stocked trout and fish such as carp and suckers can be found throughout the inland lakes.

For river fisherman, we have some of the country’s best migratory trout fishing. The Saugeen River is known across North America as a hotspot for steelhead (rainbow trout).

Steelhead enter the river during the late fall, winter and spring, providing angling opportunities during the off seasons before they complete their spawning run and return to Lake Huron and Georgian Bay in May. The Beaver River, the Bighead and the Sydenham River also provide anglers with excellent trout fishing. Shore angling access is not an issue as these rivers have plenty of areas to access the waters by foot.

Walleye, pike, and perch can be found awaiting eager winter anglers on many inland lakes. During very cold winters the bays of Colpoys and Owen Sound often freeze providing anglers with ice safe enough to fish on. When

the “bigwater” freezes anglers have the chance to fish for whitefish, trout and even salmon, an opportunity that only exists in a few places across the planet.

Please practice catch and release or sustainable harvest to ensure our fisheries are preserved for everyone to enjoy.

Find Us…Lose Yourself The Durham Art Gallery excites art lovers with its incredible rotating presentation of local, Canadian and international artists. Every two months there are two, new shows opening and the summer of 2019 holds many wonderful surprises.

Early summer sees Jill Price & Tonia di Risio sharing the Main Gallery in a feast for the senses that explores and illuminates the concept of ‘housework’ with a playful and colourful reverence.

In July, Rebecca Jane Houston presents a series of interactive, kinetic sculptures in her show PLAY. Accompanying this work in the East Gallery will be our summer, youth-based artists show.

Also in the second weekend of July, The Durham Art Gallery will co-present the second annual Durham ArtsFest, featuring interactive galleries in shop windows, a multitude of artist and artisans in Artists’ Alley and live music and art performances. Don’t miss the Saturday night, street dance and beverage garden, featuring a live band and interactive art installations.

In September we will present, From Durham With Love; an exhibition featuring artists from Durham region. This splendid group show will be curated by The Station Gallery’s’ curator, Olex Wlasenko.

Rail trails provide a great cycling experience for those looking to ride on predictable, open trails but away from all motorized traffic. The Bruce County Rail Trail runs from Port Elgin to Mildmay. The Kilian family immigrated from South Africa to rural Ontario in April 2017.

Dr. Rochagne Kilian was recruited by CANAM Physicians Recruiting Inc. after she obtained her specialist qualifications while working in BC in 2014. In 2017 she was hired as a physician in Family & Emergency Medicine at Grey Bruce Health Services. Abrie Kilian, an Attorney-at-Law & Martial Artist in South Africa, has recently opened Kilian Academy – a progressive martial arts academy in Owen Sound.

Located in southern Bruce County, the Municipality of Brockton includes Walkerton and smaller communities such as Cargill, Chepstow, Pinkerton and Elmwood. The Saugeen and Teeswater rivers flow through the area, promising a refreshing change of pace with activities such as paddling, tubing, angling and some of the best fly fishing in Canada.

Find an experienced fishing guide in the Walkerton area who can introduce you to the sport. Boats and gear are provided. Your catch can vary from salmon and trout to bass and pike, although fly fishermen encourage sustainable catch-and-release practices.

Fish stations are conveniently located along the Saugeen River in Brockton.

History buffs will appreciate Victoria Jubilee Hall, featuring live performances throughout fall, winter and spring. Heritage walking and driving tours are also available.

Love mountain biking? Look no further than the Brant Tract Trail south of Paisley. One of several specialized Bruce County biking parks, it features 20 kilometres of varied trails, from tight and technical to open and flowing, geared to all ages and skill levels. Brockton is also a mecca for snowmobilers in winter, with trails that connect to local hotels.

Festivals and events round out Brockton’s offerings. Check out Springtime in the Gardens and the Grapevines, Beer Steins and Moonshine events in spring. Summer brings free Music in the Park concerts, the Private Collectors’ Garage Tour of rare automobiles, a Dinner on Durham in downtown Walkerton, and Pickin’ by the Pond, a country and bluegrass festival in Cargill. Tour the Legendary Greenock Swamp!

Looking for something out of the ordinary? Experience Southern Ontario’s largest forested wetland, the Greenock Swamp, through two lively and engaging summer tours.

The tours encompass the legends and lore of this incredible natural area, a source of intrigue since the first European settlers arrived in the mid-1800s. Stories abound of man-eating plants, quick sand and a mysterious green light that has driven even the most dedicated outdoorsman running for his life.

The first tour highlights the legends, lore and mysteries surrounding the men who lumbered in the swamp in the late 1800s. The second tour focuses on the days of making swamp whiskey during prohibition and some amazing stories, including how the bootleggers eluded authorities.

The tours run on Saturdays from 2-7 p.m. and include transportation, a guided exploration of the swamp and historic sites, wine and beer tasting, theatrical re-enactments, a traditional Bruce County dinner, great stories and lots of laughs! Some walking is also involved.

• Legends of the Great Swamp takes in the stories that surround the logging days of the late 1800s and lumber baron Henry Cargill, the town’s namesake and later a Member of Parliament. Cargill logged five million board feet of white pine out of the swamp every year for 25 years.

Learn about the logging camps, the hardships, and the lore. Stay on your toes – unexpected visits may occur at any time!

• Bootlegging Lore of the Great Swamp highlights the prohibition days of Bruce County and the enterprising souls who lurked here, making moonshine in the dead of the night. Hear about their amazing stories, the lure of fast money and the penalties that came with getting caught.

The tour includes a visit to the Walkerton Jail, where we’ll retrace the footsteps of some infamous prisoners and escape artists.
