Night of Pumpkin Heads

Dracula fangs, pumpkin heads and eerie horns! Yes, it’s the creepy time of the year again where all the ghosts are out of their graves to celebrate Halloween with us. Celebrated on the last night of October, Halloween isn’t just any other international festival, but quite a trend in India. Costume parties, trick-treating, visiting haunted houses and the other traditions wouldn’t be all for Halloween celebrations. Hyderabadis love going spooky and ghoulish on this day. Ishna Rawlani gets you what the city peeps have in store for themselves and how they rejoice the day by letting their inner ghosts out this Halloween! “I would say we are adapting the western culture at a high pace and it’s really good to see people of India are readily accepting it. Halloween initially was not known by everyone in India. But off late everyone is enjoying Halloween. It’s a very unique way of celebrating it. I personally prefer celebrating Halloween at a pub because that’s a place where I get to see people getting dressed uniquely in different styles. Last time I went for a Halloween party I was dressed as a vamp with red horns and drops of red paint all over my mouth. Can’t wait for Halloween this year”. Hansika Mawle, Student, NIIT Hyderabad. “Celebrated on the 31st of October, the eve of All Saints Day in U.S, Halloween in the modern days is all about doing scary things. Although we don’t see the Jack-oLanterns and the little trick-or-treats yet, this celebration is gaining popularity in India. Last year, I put on my hot pants with some scary but chic devil horns, haute red feather boa and headed to the most happening club in Hyderabad ‘Kismet’. We danced the night away to the tunes of the Dj. It was one memorable night that turned into an even better morning when I found my photo in the society pages. Really looking forward to this year’s bash.” Mukti Jagirdar, Student, Badruka Degree College.

‘’Halloween is one of those festivals which I really love to celebrate! I’m waiting badly for 31st October so that I can put on some weird spooky clothes, a mask like robin and go and chill out with my buddies. Though it is not that popular in India some do celebrate it in their own way. I go to places like coffee shops and restaurants where people decorate their walls and rooms with spooky stuff, chocolates and treaties on their tables and of course how can I forget the main symbol of Halloween, that giant orange pumpkin with a cheesy face! Every Halloween is fun for me because you don’t get to see that stuff everyday and I hope India catches the spirit of Halloween soon. I’d love to see people roaming around in weird costumes and knocking on everyone’s door they pass through and ask “trick or treat”! Gaurav Lalchandani, Student, Aurora Degree College. 20 OCTOBER, JULY, 2013 2013

‘’Halloween - the idea itself is so appealing and fun filled to me. People are really excited to celebrate Halloween, because it’s something really new to us. We buy costumes and try to dress up like zombies or walking skeletons or vampires. I myself do that, and we Hyderabadis just need a reason to party! Now a days by seeing the interests of people, a lot of Halloween parties are being hosted in various pubs, and most of them are a hit. I personally have a private house party and celebrate it with my friends, from dressing up in your horror bests to the scary music, rough moves and spooky stories. Its way too exciting and an unusual way to party! So looking forward to this year’s Halloween!’’ Akshit Khanna, Student, St.Mary’s college.

Its finally here! The much-anticipated day when you get to dress up as whatever you want and eat as much candy as you can possibly handle : It’s HALLOWEEN-hooray! Being from a fashion field, I decided to explore what are the most popular dressing up choices worldwide for Halloween 2013. The 5 trends that stood out to me are inspired from “POP CULTURE”. Most halloween costumes fall under the Pop Culture category. Popular movies, tv shows and video games inspire many of the costumes. And so do books, artworks, celebs, national icons, famous brands and tourist destinations. 1. “We Can Do It”- The icon of Rosie the Reverter 2.”White Rabbit ,Alice and Queen of Hearts”-From Alice in the wonderland. 3.”Edward Scissors”- A 1990 Movie character 4.”Mr. And Mrs. Pumpkin Head”- A carved pumpkin. 5.”Superman. At least better than dressing up as a vampire or a joker every year! Prarthna Jain, NIFT, Hyderabad “I celebrate it with my friends at some odd farmhouse of anyone amongst my group. We generally have a Halloween dress code that day where each one of us dresses up like one unique character that matches the occasion. We tend to meet up early and raise a toast for the occasion. As the night progresses we get more into the mood and jive or dance a bit. We have snacks and food to pounce upon too. We also share a few haunting or ghostly stories. These stories are mostly experiences or maybe stories being told for long times which generally associate with Indian culture. So that’s how we tend to blend Indian culture into the less celebrated Halloween.” Vishesh Vangani, Student, IIPM Hyderabad.

22 OCTOBER, 2013

A Day From

Avinash Dowlwani’s

Diary

Has lived abroad all his life and has travelled to different parts of the world. He is an independent, hardworking individual who believes that nothing is impossible in life. What makes him a point of our interview? He is a well read and a true foodie. He is synonymous to group on facebook ‘Foodies in Hyderabad”.

Mornings: I wake up fairly early, and since I work from home I don’t have any restrictions regarding my schedules. First thing in the morning I need is a hot cup of Tim Horton Americano and my iPad. I check out my group “Foodies in Hyderabad” to see what its members have been up to. Once I am done with it I head out for a walk in the community. I am lucky to have found a place out here in trendset winz because it indeed is a nice and peaceful place filled with greenery. Then I come back home and spend time with the newspaper to see what’s going on in the world and what’s up with the dollar rates. Work: I run a projector lamp manufacturing and distribution business with a factory in Guangzhou in china and its sales and distribution office in North America. So rest of the morning goes in making sure everything is right in the lamps world. I have always lived abroad first in Dubai then moved to London and then Canada. We are one of the oldest Sindhi families in Hyderabad, with my grandfather being the founder of the Sindhi society out here. I have always had a passion for business and I started on my own in Dubai and developed it into a

Being a businessman with excellent marketing skills I came up with some interesting concepts, like going places as a group, one of our initial outing was to the fruit research centre in sanga reddy where they grow around 400 different types of mangoes

Family: I have moved to Hyderabad from Canada last year and I have lived quite an independent life. There is absence of my parents since they are no more but have always been blessed with their love and support. The advantage of living in India is the help you can hire, I have a south Indian care taker who looks after everything including food, and the food she cooks makes lot of my friends turn up unexpectedly for breakfast now and then. I have a huge extended family in Hyderabad

The great Hyderabad breakfast walkathon was another idea we came out with where we took a whole lot of foodies out to charminar to try out various different kinds of breakfast places. I feel Hyderabad is city of expatriates and with the IT industry booming out here, there are people from all across India and abroad moving into our city and making it their home. We made these people explore Hyderabad’s true culture by taking them to old city. The first time we went, we were just 45 of us, second time we were around 140 plus and it was a true pleasure. The foodies in Hyderabad group also works on social causes and we support and help a charity foundation called the Desire society which looks after children who are HIV positive. Few of us have even collected rice for these kids. We also organized a fun party for these children where we had puppet show and pizzas for the kids who really loved it. Evenings: My lamp business and foodies in Hyderabad take up all my time all day along. But I take some time out for gym, early in the evening. The love of food starts showing really quick. Most of my friends are from within the group. I have made friends with people, who have similar passion for food and they are restaurateurs in the city, Balram Narayakar of The Blue Door, Akshay Puljal of Peperoncino

with whom I connect at times. I have spent a few of my schooling years here but most of the friends have moved abroad. I am currently single but don’t plan to stay that way for too long. After moving to Hyderabad from Canada it was very difficult to make new friends and being a foodie I loved food but hated the idea of going out and eating alone. So I thought of looking up for people who shared the same interest and came across a group with whom I attended a few of their events but then decided to start a group of my own which would appeal to people with similar interests and similar outlook to life. So I came across a group with 20 odd people in it called “Foodies in Hyderabad.” I had a brief chat with Jayati Pardhy who started the group and joined it immediately and that’s where the journey began. On May 1st 2013 we were a group of 30 people and today we have cross the 5500 mark. The whole point of the group is to try out new and different kinds of food, check out new restaurants and never eat alone.

The group has also given me my best friends in Swaroop, Kaifi and Dr Rashwan. Not to forget the passion these guys have for food and the love and enthusiasm is very difficult to beat. Dr Rashwan is a great cook himself and he makes the best nihari in the world.

ehenga cholis and the jingles of the payal. It’s again that time of the year to dress up traditionally, to go absolutely colorful, and to let your hair down and dance all night long to the Guajarati folk songs. Yes! It’s the Dandia and Garba time. 9 days filled with absolute entertainment and liveliness, the dandia sticks, the mirror work outfits reflecting the light and charm of festivities, and the thumping hearts filled with energy to have fun is what makes this season beautiful. The city people are too excited and cannot wait to rock the festival this year. While some would be enjoying the festival just for fun, some of them follow the rituals and do not forget to fast. Ishna Rawlani gives you a sneak-peek of what are the city youngsters up to this Navratri! “Navratri has always been my favorite festival! From the food, poojas to the family gatherings it’s like a mini Diwali for me. The amazing part is dandia and garba. Being a Hyderabadi no one can stop me from dancing hours and hours and even if I am super tired I get carried away with the music and the amazing colors of Navratri. The never ending nine days of colors, traditional clothes, garba, dandia, friends and family is like bliss to me.” Apart from this we also have a 9 day pooja of the Goddess Lakshmi as a ritual of this festival. Dressing up traditionally is the best part of Navratri and having a good time and bonding with friends. I can’t wait for navratri this year, as I am already planning for it ! Samiksha Biyani, Student, Aurora Degree College.

24 OCTOBER, 2013

“Navratri, the festival of all the goddesses bringing in joy and prosperity for 9 days in our lives! Being a Gujarati it excites me more as it’s the only time when I get to dress in our very own traditional attire of ghagra choli. I dance my heart out on garba and dandiya every night on the traditional music. It gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it and the best part is being a dancer by profession it creates more curiosity in me every year. The utsav conducted in the city gives me the best experience as I get to spend 9 days along with my friends leaving me with so many wonderful memories. The environment itself makes me fall in love with the festival every single time. Aarti, traditional music, mouth watering food and snacks to fill in the break and to capture all these memories is something I always look forward to.” Karishma Paleja, Dance Instructor, Shiamak Davar.

“Dusshera signifies the victory of good over evil. During these 9 days, Goddess Durga is adorned with 9 different “avatars”. Hyderabad is a multi cultural, multi lingual city known for its royal past, opens its arms to one and all during this festive season. Dandiya nights at Namdhari always promise to be bigger, better and even in varied formats. Dandiya and Garba nights are what I personally look forward to. 9 day big budget dandiya bashes to “raas” nights at city pubs, this festive season gives the Garba and Dandiya enthusiasts the time of their lives with organizers pumping in the moolah to add the extra glitter. I make it a point to visit at least 2 days of the 9 days. The places are filled with people decked in traditional attire & they dance gracefully to the tunes of the band. The food stalls are the icing on the cake. You see a footfall of nearly 5000-6000 people every year & it gets bigger every season. It has not lost its spark. The vibrant enthusiasts dance away to glory. I am eagerly looking forward to it and hope to see it at its best this year.” Nirooha Rachala, Student, CVR college of Engineering.

With lot of people in the city looking forward to play Dandia and have a incredible time, they do not forget the strenuous fasts that come along with the holy festival of Navratri. The city people talk about their unfathomable beliefs and rituals.

“Well, talking from young generation’s point of view, no, they don’t like fasting. I myself can’t fast, I am a big time foodie but I totally respect my culture, at times we should fast and see how it feels. But since we are talking about the reaction - we guys end up fighting with our parents if they ask us to fast, we start making fun and do not even care to listen or know why do they even want us to fast. Well nothing is going to change by fasting or not fasting anyways but the belief what our parents and elders have, I think we should at least respect and give it a thought. Yes, there are people who fast but more over they are girls - they really fast because I see my sisters and a couple of friends doing it. So, I am guessing that 30% of the youngsters still fast but then again you never know. May be we are moving forward and accepting different cultures. Only one thing we guys can really do is celebrate Navratri by dancing and playing Dandiyas.” Shreyans Dungarwal, Photographer.

“If I had to rename Navratri for the younger generation, I'd re-term it as "Devotional Disco". While these 9 days bring the excitement, zest and happiness, the festival is losing its significance and essence amidst the young crowd. While Dandiya & Garba are performed with all energy in the best way possible, today's kids are less aware about the reasons why we celebrate Navratri. Moreover, we come across unfortunate instances happening during these 9 days which zeroes down the spirituality aspect of the festival. Nonetheless, it is heartwarming to see people across the age spectrum, welcoming this festival and enjoying it." Dwij Vasavada, Facebook India.

Personally, I’m a spiritual person, I believe in god, and the rules made by him. But today it does fade out if you see the change in the culture amongst certain group of people. I don’t think it’s fading out completely, as we all belong to a nation where we have thousands of different cultures and communities altogether one thing is in common, be it any religion which is to do the right things. In other words a proper discipline is taught which won’t get washed out completely and I love the way the festivals are celebrated by us, with different customs and traditions. Eventually, it gets a spark of being religious amongst those who doesn’t want. Dr. Irfan Ahmed, Actor

SUCCESS STORY

The Leading Lady Dynamic, committed, passionate, are just a few words to describe this young woman entrepreneur Mrs. Swapna Cherukuri. She is the Managing Director of Lahari Resorts and also former chairperson of Young FICCI Ladies Organization. She was conferred with an award for “Excellence in Tourism” by Indian Achievers Forum in 2010 and is also involved in various construction and real estate project all at a very young age. We get you an insight on her journey of success and more. How did you conceptualize the idea of Lahari Resorts? Lahari resorts are a part of the Lahari Group which has been a name to reckon with in the Hyderabad real- estate sector. We started off with the project in 2003 and at that time it was just started as a club house project. I joined the company in 2006, before which I used to run a boutique called – The Design Street. In 2004, we started the construction of the resorts; initially the idea was to sell off the land and give membership of the club house to the owners, however there was huge demand to have a getaway place a few hours away from the city and thus came up the idea of the resorts. In 2006, the resort was launched, with 62 rooms and 20 various other facilities like go-karting, bowling alley, paint ball, etc and due to the availability of such recreational services people find Lahari as one of the best weekend getaways of the city. How has the journey been so far? The journey so far has been absolutely marvelous. Lahari resorts were accorded “Most Eco Friendly Tourism Project in 2009” and “Best 3 Star Resort in 2010” by the Govt. of A.P. I am really passionate about my work and I believe when you love the work you do and give in your 100% and success is bound to come your way. How would you differentiate your resorts from any of the other resorts of the city? Lahari Resorts are a unique getaway where the carpet beneath your feet is over 35 acres, and the ceiling is an unending vastness. A setting spun amidst the ethereal beauty of nature with shimmering water bodies, water fountains, flowerbeds, lawns and paving sculptures adorning the topography. Lahari is well equipped with both entertainment as well as leisure activities for all age groups. We have an international standard cricket

stadium, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, paint ball, bowling alley, snooker and billiard tables and many such recreational facilities. At Lahari we believe in catering 100% service. As we are in a service industry we can never take a chance with our service. We try and provide the best services. I believe providing facilities and a 100% service is the biggest result for success. You are also involved in various real estate and construction projects. Tell us more about that. I was actively involved in the “Lahari Jade Residenza” project, a 135 house low-income housing project in Banoor, Hyderabad. At that time we got a great response as the real- estate market was booming and was at the peak. At present I am waiting for the real estate market to pick up so we can carry on with our other projects. What are your Future Plans? In 2014, we are coming up with another project relating to the service industry for the senior citizens. This would be for people above the age of 58 and hopefully we will be able to launch it by January 2014. You are in a very competitive field? How do you cope up with the stress level? Every business is stressful and I believe time management is the key to cope up with the stress. Basically my family has always been a part of the real estate business and as I grew up real estate became a part of me and so it is in my blood. I also believe that when you work with passion and give in your best and love the work you do, the stress also automatically reduces. Support from your family members I feel is the biggest stress buster, the two men in my

life – my father and husband have always supported me and I feel their support is one of the major reasons how I can cope up with the work. You were a former chairperson on Young FICCI Ladies Organization. Tell us more about that. Being the chairperson was a wonderful opportunity for me. I feel the organization is one of the best platforms for working women to interact and learn new things. We tend to meet people from various fields of work and have so much to learn from each other. When I was the chairperson we tried to bring in a lot of events relating to education, improving the role of education, finance etc. What other things interest you other than your work? I love spending time with my family. I have two daughters and the younger one is just a year and half old. Being with my kids makes me forget everything else. When you see the smile on their face you miss the childhood innocence but I too always try to keep the child in me alive. I also love spending time with my close friend and watching movies. I am a little bit into health so work outs are a must for me. Regarding my work I feel it’s just the beginning and success is still a long way to go.

Wedding Let us accept this… although all relationships are unique … Everybody fights and so do we (otherwise what’s the fun in it *chuckles*). But no matter how grave or insignificant a situation is, we always come out of it stronger than before and we do that by keeping the basics right and by not pretending that the fight never happened and wait for the tension to blow over. Apart from being romantics and approaching the problem with a whole lot of mush, we also try to look at things without the rose tinted glasses… and without stirring things further, we try to identify the root of the squabble – communicate - take responsibility of our actions and improvise! I think the key to happiness in our relationship is the balance that we found by basing it on both love and understanding and ultimately having a fun relationship with a whole lot of emotions and the pact that we never give up on each other… Rahil Nadeem Mirza & Hina Rais Mirza 50 OCTOBER, AUGUST, 2013 2013

“We hardly fight but like all couples, we too sometimes get miffed with each other but a simple sorry with a smile is enough to make everything alright between us,” says the couple. Harshit goes an extra mile for her and surprises her by showering her with gifts and this always makes her smile. There was this one time when Harshit got her a really big teddy bear just to surprise her after a small tiff and she couldn’t stop her heart from melting within seconds. Harpreet and Harshit

NUPTIALS “We fight everyday,” says this really bubbly couple. “There is not a day when we don’t get miffed with each other but we can’t live without talking to each other and by the end of the day just a smile or a small sorry is enough to melt the other person’s heart. We fight for silly reasons and then at the end of the day we just end up laughing at the reasons we fight for.” It is said that with every fight love increases and that is just the case with this couple. They say with every fight our love grows for each other. Forgive and forget is the motto of our relationship and love is about expressing each other’s feelings not just the nice ones but also when you are angry or sad and when the other person is willing to change themselves to make their better half happy. Shilpa and Varun Ganeriwal

When she is angry with him, he calls her and says I will be late. And then she gets more miffed but doesn’t say a thing because of the fight and suddenly the bell rings and he surprises her by being at the door. He then takes her for a long drive. When he is angry with her, which is seldom, she goes filmy and packs his office tiffin with a note in it. She puts little notes everywhere- in his shaving kit, sets a reminder in his phone to come early and he melts just as easily! Fights are a part and parcel of life. They understand that issues can surface fast and have to be disposed even faster. She knows the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and there was this one time she made an entire five course meal for him with candles and more. At the same time he was booking her a romantic dinner at a plush five star! To avoid letting the dilemma of where to go not create another conflict, they went through the entire home cooked meal and even went for the romantic dinner! Ashok Rathi and Prerna Rathi

Mantra

It’s been almost 18 years this couple has been together and when you spend so many years together you do end up having fights atleast once in a while. “We have practically grown up with each other and know just everything about each other but sometimes you still do end up fighting. Candle light dinners, long drives and gifts always work the best with a smile and a sorry,” says the couple. There was this one time Pari was really miffed with Nikhil and she wouldn’t even talk to him and he had already tried everything, so this one particular time he just surprised her with a holiday to Phuket and then nothing could stop Pari’s heart to melt. It was an amazing trip and an unforgettable experience. Watching the ocean with your own eyes and the fact that you are living on the waters is an enthralling experience. The only bad thing about the trip was those small cabin like rooms and limited food to choose. However, the whole experience of living mid sea and engaging in intriguing activities like diving, deck parties and gaming was a lot of fun. Undoubtedly it was one of my most favourite cruise trips. The waters between Thailand and Malaysia are extremely lovely. -Ankita Naregi, Housewife

The first time I got to know that my dad had planned up a cruise trip from Bahamas to Miami, all I had in mind was the extravagant interiors and look described in the movie Titanic. On the first day as soon as we boarded the vessel we were taken to our rooms, it was more than what we expected, the enormous suite rooms were very exquisite and comfortable. As soon as the anchor raised and the ship sailed, we were taken on a tour around the cruise. It was a complete treat to look at how they had fitted everything on this one ship, an open air deck with a huge pool, a basketball court, a gym, golf course and that’s not all they also had spa, club, restaurants of 15 different cuisines from around the world and to top it all there was an entire floor for a Casino. To concise it up, I could say it was a whole town floating on water. We enjoyed every bit of the cruise from the tasty delicacies in the restaurants to the relaxing spa treatment, from a dashing night at the club to a little bit of gambling in the casino it was one of my most enjoyable experiences ever. AUTOMOBILES

Love for Vintage Cars

With the charismatic new hot wheels and advancing technology, cars have come a long way in terms of looks and performance. A car from the period of 1919 to 1930- The Vintage Era, the period, where cars became much more practical, convenient and comfortable. But, there is something about the vintage cars that cannot stop us from loving them, however how old they might get. They suit the quote “old is gold’’. You can have a romantic relationship with the old cars. When you drive an old car, you are paying attention to the driving situation around you. You are actually driving. You’re physically involved in the experience. You are driving defensively. This is the experience classic cars give you. Classic cars captivate us with their beauty, rarity and engineering, with the memories they evoke, the history they capture. They are still young at heart and have a mileage to prove it. It’s a treasure that every antique-automobile enthusiast dreams about in his garage or barn. You see one, you pine for it, you dream about it. They are astounding and unforgettable and a collection of golden oldies. They make you fall in love with them over and over again! We give a look at the top 3 vintage cars of all times. 1966 Lamborghini Miura - We don’t know if it’s the most stylish car on the list, but as far as cred goes, well it inspired the whole “Let’s toss a couple of seats on a rocket” sports car idea. It also became a new and different Italian sports car option.

1961 Jaguar E-Type - Whether you pronounce it Jagwar or Jag-u-ar, everyone agrees the brand oozes style. The E-Type was released in 1961 to some pretty heavy praise. Enzo Ferrari referred to it as, “The most beautiful car ever made,” well, that’s good enough for us.

1969 TOYOTA 2000GT- If you’re noticing a small Bond theme here, you’re totally right. While Bond got a drop-top, the ’69 Toyota 2000GT was stylish enough without one being offered up from the factory. The elongated front, along with the design in general, makes it feel much more like an Italian roadster than something you would picture purchasing for its “dependable gas mileage.”

Robert Pattinson Misses Kristen Stewart

“Of course Rob misses Kristen,” the source says. “He misses her every single day.” It has now been a pretty long time since Rob and Kristen split in May, but being apart from her has just given him more opportunity to remember all the good times, the source reveals: “They had a lot of fun when they were a couple and they laughed a lot. What Rob misses the most about Kristen is her smile and the sound of her laughing. She has the most endearing smile to Rob. “I know they are both still very fond of each other,” the source adds. “Rob has always felt like Kristen made him a better person, a more transparent, confident person.”RPatz is definitely in a difficult situation, he clearly still has feelings for K-Stew but at the same time he knows that a relationship isn’t very realistic at the moment. So, unfortunately the only thing left for him to do is stay single and keep trying to distract himself with his career. He is in no way interested in dating anyone seriously. He’s really into his career right now, and spending time at the gym. He has lots of films coming up and wants to be in great shape. Getting ripped isn’t the worst side effect of heartbreak though, right? What do you think?

Lindsay dating an NLF player ?

According to the reports, Lindsay Lohan is seen spending a lot of time with former National Football League (NFL) player Matt Nordgren and there are rumours that they are dating each other. Sources close to them revealed that Lohan and Nordgren have hooked up in the past as well. A source said, “I’m not surprised about Lindsay and Matt. They have a history of hooking up during New York Fashion Week.” “Last year, they had a wild night of partying and hooking up. So, it’s not shocking they’re hanging out again this time of year,” the source added. But, nothing is serious yet. “Is he her boyfriend? No. He lives in Dallas. But they see each other when he’s in New York or Los Angeles,” said a source.

Victoria Beckham to design clothes for Fifty Shades ? Victoria Beckham will reportedly design the outfits for lead characters Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in Sam Taylor-Wood’s forthcoming film “Fifty Shades of Grey”, based on E.L. James trilogy. ‘Fifty Shades...’ is going to be more than a movie. We are hoping for spin-offs in fashion and music. Victoria is frontrunner,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted a source as saying. The producers are also reportedly considering designers Dolce and Gabbana, Diane Von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs for the film. Victoria, who is married to retired soccer star David Beckham, is a fan of the erotic novel and even got a copy of it for her mother Jackie Adams.”I’m halfway through the second one. I even bought my mother the book. But every time she tries to engage in conversation about it, I kind of dodge the subject. I don’t really want to talk to my mother about it,” Victoria had said.

MOVIES Movie Reviews

Grand Masti Working around the same premise as 2004’s ‘Masti, in which three friends decide to get some action on the side when they’re tired of begging their preoccupied wives, the sequel sees married desperados Meet (Vivek Oberoi), Amar (Ritesh Deshmukh) and Prem (Aftab Shivdasani) hit their college reunion. The difference between both films is that the earlier one banked on naughty sexual innuendo to inspire laughs, while this one is packed with vulgar sight gags. As many as six actresses are paired opposite our three heroes, but each is such an unmemorable stereotype, not one leaves an impression, except for all the wrong reasons or perhaps the right reasons, given the nature of this film.It has few clever lines that would work well and are funny enough to make you laugh. It is disturbing that a film of this nature should have a budget of a few crores, get such a wide release and receive so much publicity. The sad truth is that ‘Grand Masti’ reveals in making you cringe, not laugh. Adult humor tends to work best when some things are left to your imagination. But the makers of this film force-feed the audience images, dialogues and references so discomforting, the only laughs you’ll hear are nervous chuckles. We’re the Millers Small-time drug dealer David Clark (Jason Sudeikis) must cross the US-Mexico border to smuggle a major drug consignment, clear debts and make things right with drug lord Brad (Ed Helms). David comes up? If outrageous, politically incorrect, sleazy or, to be specific, ‘genital jokes’ offend you, “We’re the Millers” may not amuse you. However, if you are not a holier-than-thou type and find plenty of adult humor hilarious, there’s enough madness in the film to keep you entertained. In spite of a predictable story (we all know the fake family will end up functioning as a real family eventually), what makes the movie work is the spectacular comic timing and performances of the lead actors. They lend just the right amount of chutzpah to their bizarre roles. The madcap characters don’t get mushy at the drop of a hat which is hugely refreshing. What also clicks is the balance of the story manages to maintain between heart- warming emotions and dirtiness. We’re the Millers is a predictable but funny road trip movie that’s loaded with sexual expletives. In spite of the occasional silliness, it does make you laugh. You may not like this film if adult humor grosses you out. Potugadu Manchu Manoj, who is known for trying out something new with every film, is testing his luck with the film ‘Potugadu’. The movie is a remake of the Kannada hit ‘Govindaya Namaha’ and Pawan Wadeyar is the director. The movie has four heroines and Achu has composed the music. Let us see if Manoj can entertain with ‘Potugadu’. Cinematography is a big asset for this movie. Editing is pretty good. It is quite tough to seamlessly edit a film which is nothing more than the sum of four short stories. But the editor has managed to do a neat job. Achu’s music and background score are big assets for the film. Sreedhar Sipana’s dialogues have good entertainment value.Pawan Wadeyar makes a decent impression as a director. ‘Potugadu’ has a very entertaining and racy first half. But it is let down by a loud and cliched second half. You can safely watch the film once, for the crackling performances from Manoj and Posani as well as for some great songs. Watch it at your own risk!

Know Your Fortune

FORTUNE

- Tarot reading by Nupur Heda

LIBRA

(September 23 - October 22)

The Cards suggest above all the idea of hope. No matter how bad things may appear, there will always be hope that provides the strength to keep going. Nothing lasts forever, eventually things will improve. There is an ability to stand firm against adversity. It represents optimism. The cards suggest the calm after the storm. The air is fresh and cleansed of the burden of the past. This is a time when ones thoughts become clear after a period of confusion. It offers the promise of a brighter future. Confidence is renewed fulfillments. New and wider horizons are in sight.

SCORPIO

(October 23 - November 21) The card represents sorrow and heartbreak. The conflict is however necessary for future happiness leading to other and better things. This month is for clearing the ground for future developments. There are joyous times to come. It’s the end of an unsatisfactory relationship, things coming to a head. It is a calm time before the storm. Although not realized at the time, this is a beginning of a recovery, either physical or emotional. Disappointments will soon become celebration. The Angel Says: To develop the knack of taking a distance from the mind is one of the greatest blessings. It is what spending peaceful time is all about, not chanting a mantra, or repeating an affirmation, but just watching, as if the mind belongs to someone else. Indulge yourself in knack of time and peace will grow and deepen in you.

SAGITTARIUS

(November 22 - December 21) The cards suggest the craft of the mason. It is construction on the material plane, the mastery of practical skills. This month is for creating something for the future. Commercial enterprises are well-expected and will prove to be profitable. However, helping ones fellows will bring satisfaction over and above financial reward. Abilities are recognized and honored by others. It is going to be a rewarding experience for past hard work. A right time to bring people of various fields of expertise together for a particular project. The Angel Says: It is a precious moment, a recognition that something is finished, something is completing, whatever it is a job, a relationship, a home you have loved, anything that might have helped you to define who you are--it is time to let go of it, allowing any sadness but not trying to hold on. Something greater is awaiting you; You are past the point of no return now, and gravity is doing its work. Go with it.

CAPRICORN

(December 22 - January 19) The cards indicate a change in stability, and the strength required successfully achieving and securing that change. Once established, overthrow is impossible, opposition will always be defeated. It’s a secure and safe position from which to make further advance. There are hidden resources upon which to draw. It is a very right time to prepare for defenses against a future attack. The lunar influence on the cards 78 OCTOBER, 2013

indicates that the imagination also plays an important role, providing an insight into the ways of the opposition. The imagination should not however be allowed to dwell unnecessarily on illusory enemies. Awareness of the dangers of the world could lead to over-protection of dependents. The Angel Says: You are clinging to, and what we feel we possess that is so valuable it needs to be protected by a fortress. Whatever you’re holding on to, remember that you can’t take it with you. Loosen your grip and feel the freedom and expansiveness sharing can bring.

AQUARIUS

(January 20 - February 18) This cards represent the intellect, its ability to probe and examine the environment and its power to change and transform that environment if it is found wanting. It is time to put productive thoughts, creative ideas and the mind to constructive use. Keep self-confidence and belief in oneself. Practical knowledge will work as opposed to theory. This month will give you the ability to organize people, time and events, to plan things in a way that is of benefit to all concerned. You will excel in the spheres of business and commerce. Someone may engage you in overseas trade. It is a good time for medical or veterinary professions. It’s a time of new opportunities or beginnings. New doors will be opening. It is a right time to take first decisive step along the road of progress. The Angel Says: Let’s face it. There is always going to be somebody who is more beautiful, more talented, stronger, more intelligent, or apparently happier than you are or even less. The way to find out who you are is not by comparing yourself with others, but by looking to see whether you are fulfilling your own potential in the best way you know how.

PISCES

(February 19 - March 20) The cards indicate the casting of the past. It’s a change of thought or approach. Now is a time for looking into the future. It’s a time for transformation of some kind. This is a turning point in your life. There may be a change of personality, possibly a complete change in ones way of life or circumstances. There is a new and brighter view of the future. In general, the changes indicated by these cards will be for the better. The Angel Says: At the earthiest level, love may be attraction and

many of us remain stuck there, because of expectations. Actually the biggest “problem” with attraction is that it never lasts and only if we accept this we can welcome it’s happening, and say good-bye with gratitude when it’s not. Love is based on freedom, not expectation or need.

ARIES

(March 21 - April 19) The card indicates good luck for the month. Wishes for material success and prosperity are answered. It is a time of comfort and luxury. Goals or aims in life are achieved, time for giving control over life and circumstances. There will be popularity and the favour of others. Arians will find accomplishment in the world of business or finance. It will be a month with a feeling of deep satisfaction. There may be an element of surprise in the receipt of wealth, gifts out of the blue. Perhaps you will love the outdoor activities and enjoy them too. There is a need to suppress your animal instincts and to control harmful tendencies. Conversely there is a longing to escape your inhibitions. The Angel Says: There is a time and a place for control, but if we put it in charge of our lives, we end up totally rigid. If mistakes happen, it’s okay, If things get a little out of hand, it’s probably just what the doctor ordered. There is much, much more to life than being “on top of things.”

TAURUS

(April 20 - May 20) The powers of these cards are used in a benign and positive way. Your strength will only be realized by planning for the future. Planning confers stability and the reassurance of security in your future life. Financial problems will overcome this month before they arise. Pensions, insurance and investments are suggested, also money gained from gifts or legacies. It’s time to build for the future. There is however an element of isolation associated with this card. Your self-interest leads to an apparent lack of conscience, and eventually the distrust for others. You may behave ruthless and feel no responsibility for others. Try consciously avoiding it. The Angel Says: The danger of suppressing your natural energy is apparent in the cards. A volcanic eruption is about to take place around the edges of the emotions. The real message of the angels is to find a healing outlet for this potential explosion. It is essential to find a way to release whatever tensions and stresses might be building up inside you right now.

FORTUNE

CANCER

(June 21 - July 22) The month will begin with anxieties about money, possibly due to a loss of income or status. There is a threat of insecurity. Financial troubles are not however insurmountable but they do require care and thought to resolve. You should be aware of missing opportunities as they arise or overlooking chances that may be available. There is an intimation of labor and toil, either at the present or to come. Ones resources may be over-extended. Survival is possible despite a time of hardship. The troubles here are on the material plane. By the end of the month nourishment will be provided in abundance. All needs will be satisfied. This cards emphasizes on the emotions which also indicates are romances and close friendships. The Angel Says: Some enchanted evening you’re going to meet your soul mate, the perfect person who will fulfill all your dreams. Right? Wrong! Real love comes not from trying to solve our neediness by depending on another, but by developing our own inner richness and maturity. Then we have so much love to give that we naturally draw lovers towards us.

LEO

(July 23 - August 22) The Card World indicates completion. The final achievement of all ones objectives. The attainment of harmony. You will feel a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment. It’s time for you to move on. The cards mark the end of an era. Order, law and government will be attained. Remember tact and gentleness is necessary to the success of ones work, perhaps in a domestic context. The month indicates completion of work following a period of lengthy labor. A good time to establish your roots in a new place, a place of calmness and stability. The cards combine the fiery forces with the femininity of Venus, so passion and creativity may also be evident in Leo females. The Angel Says: Trust your inner guide, It speaks in whispers, and sometimes we can hesitate, not knowing if we have understood rightly. But the indications are clear: in following the inner guide you will feel more whole, more integrated, as if you are moving outwards from the very center of your being. If you go with it, this beam of light will carry you exactly where you need to go.

VIRGO

(May 21 - June 20) The cards indicate a state of overwhelming oppression in this month. Avoid taking more responsibilities than you are successfully able to cope with. There is overbearing pressure from above. You may feel victimized or persecuted. You will have a desire for release from the excessive burden of commitments. Resources are spread too extensively to be effective; this will lead to a loss of control. There is an urgent need for delegation, if this is not fully addressed it will eventually lead to downfall. Whatever the cause may be, the cards suggest a loss of control over your life or surroundings.

(August 23 - September 22) The cards indicate feelings of optimism this month. There is a way out of present difficulties. Opposition may be transformed into harmony. There will be co-operation or a truce between adversaries. This month there will be agreement of opposites; reconciliation of these with differing ideas or opinions which you were seeking from a long time. A balance will be achieved. The cards show a harmonious partnership or relationship. There will be economy and moderation in all things. Concentrate on profitable management of resources.Health and nourishment will be experienced for ones who were suffering from health issues.

The Angel Says: You may feel there are too many things to do at once, but don’t get bogged down in trying to do a bit here, a bit there, instead of taking one task at a time and getting on with it. Or perhaps you think the task is “boring” because you have forgotten that it’s not

The Angel Says: The awareness that is growing in you now is not the result of any conscious “doing”. You don’t need to struggle to make something happen. Any sense you might have had that you’ve been groping in the dark is dissolving now, or will be dissolving soon.
