MEDALLIONS

In order to receive a medallion, all owners must qualify as members of ESAA. You must have gotten a title on your dog as a member of ESAA with 3/4 of the points or legs or whatever being acquired after you became a member. All orders must be in writing and must be accompanied by a copy of the AKC certificate. Your individual show records are not necessary.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE ESAA had another fantastic National this year!!! Our thanks to the Michigamme Club for being such great hosts! Our special thanks to Sandy Miller and Lynda Chase as our Show chairpersons.

That is definitely not an easy job and requires almost 24 hour availability! There were so many fun and exciting events that the week just flew by. I Had the opportunity to meet so many of you either for the first time or like great family reunions for our annual visit!

There are so many people to thank for all the hard work that we have asked Michigamme to take space in our Newsletter to try and get you all the names. We know that those who give so selflessly of their time are certainly not doing it for praise or recognition, but we want to give you our thanks anyway. I hope you will forgive us if anyone is overlooked in our recognition process. Rest assured we thank everyone and appreciate any job you take on be it large or small.

When each of our events was completed, the feedback was so positive - from our Hunt tests, to our obedience events, Futurity/ Maturity, Veteran Sweeps, Top 20, bitch classes, Juniors, dog classes, and finally our Best of Breed. Everything was so successful and a thing of beauty. We had a very good entry, making it possible to see so many wonderful English Setters. It was a great year and much enjoyed by everyone!

ESAA also sponsored a health clinic during the National week.

Our thanks to Kathy Mellis, Dee Verti, and Lenore Barber. For the last few years, ESAA has partially funded many of the tests that are available at this clinic. It is our way of giving back to our membership and promoting the health of our breed. This year we were so fortunate. Michigan State is working on a thyroid study involving English Setters. They came to the clinic to collect blood samples for the study. They did the testing free for any English Setter that took advantage of the day. ESAA also presented the Research Group with a check for $5,000 dollars to help fund their work. Thanks to Dee and Kathy for working with this group to bring their work to our attention.

Speaking of donations, ESAA was notified by OFA that they had donated $8,000 dollars from their Dick Fox memorial fund for epilepsy genome sequencing of three English Setters. To honor Dick when he died, ESAA sent 5,000 dollars to a fund at OFA in Dick’s name to be used for research benefiting English Setters.

Each year we give another 1,000 dollars to this fund for the same purpose. We are sure that Dick would be most proud of a fund in his name donating for the betterment of the breed he adored.

Thank you to all who participated in the nominating and voting for

our upcoming National and Futurity/Maturity Judges. The winner for the National judging was Michael Faulkner. The Futurity/ Maturity is still kept under wraps. Our National will be held in Portland next year hosted by the Willamette Valley English Setter Fanciers. Our Puget Sound English Setter Club will also have a specialty after the National. You will be hearing more about that through the year.

Work is well underway for our Winter Garden Special coming up in February - look for continuing information about that.

We are fast approaching our wonderful Holiday season.I wish you all the best of times and much joy through the season. Please remember our English Setter friends, they are part of our families, and they too can feel the joy of the season. Remember to watch what they eat, they are prone to put anything they can in their mouths! Lastly give them all a hug for me. After being around so many a few weeks ago, it is clear we have the very best of breeds!!!

Good Morning to the ESAA Board of Directors, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the incredibly wonderful honor of being awarded the AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for ESAA for 2015. I am so humbled and honored to receive an award for sportsmanship because I try so hard to adhere to a code of good sportsmanship and ethics. This award is very, very meaningful to me, and receiving it will remain one of the highlights of my entire involvement with English Setters and dogs.

You brought happy tears to my eyes. Your ability to keep a secret is awesome.

Jill Warren Announcements from the ESAA Board of Directors The ESAA Board is has voted to name the ESAA Junior Scholarships in memory of former Junior Handler and long-time English Setter owner Misty Mondok Myers. The scholarships will now be known as the Misty Mondok Myers Memorial Scholarships.

The ESAA Board is encouraging all breeders to BAER test full litters, and circle the new option for allowing ALL results to be posted to the public domain of the OFA web site.

ESAA HEALTH

Committee Report

The health committee would like to thank the membership for the wonderful turn out for our health clinic at the national specialty in Huron, Ohio this year. You were all so helpful to make sure that we were able to have your dogs available to donate blood to a very important research project for our breed. It is not at all common that we would be so lucky to have a research project that so directly singles our breed out and can give us such a direct benefit. We will try to follow the project as it gets under way at Michigan State University, and bring some of the results and conclusions to you over the next few years while it takes place.

Dr. Petroff and his team at MSU have already mailed the results of the testing on the 50 dogs that we drew OFA Auto Immune Thyroid blood samples on during the National Specialty this year. These tests were run free of charge by MSU for the members participating at this year’s national health clinic. MSU is looking for an early genetic marker for autoimmune thyroiditis that is responsible for the dogs becoming hypothyroid. Dr. Petroff sent Dr. Puga Basu and Rebecca Egbert to the health clinic to help us process the samples on the day of the blood draw. So our thank you also extends to Dr. Puga who is a PhD fellow in the Endocrinology Lab and his technician Rebecca Egbert for helping with the samples during the blood draws. I would like to especially thank Dr. MaryDee Sist, another MSU Faculty member, for informing me of this study late this summer at the AKC Health Conference in ST. Louis and for her help along the way in staging the event in Huron.

Our health committee for ESAA consists of three members: Kathy Mellis , Denyce Verti, and Lenora Barber.

Please reach out to any of us if you would like us to add any other items to help you as members and breeders in our breed. Lenora Barber lives in Canada and will help us with any items that the Canadian members would like us to address. Kathy Mellis lives on the East Coast in New York and Denyce Verti lives in Idaho to help in the West.

This year’s health clinic was primarily focused around auto immune thyroiditis and this MSU study but we also were also able to do some microchipping and AKC/DNA Swabs on members who elected that part of the clinic.

ESAA members can ask the health committee members about any problems or issues they would like us to address as a breed club. We will try to help you with information and help facilitate that if possible.

Thank You from Michigamme!

As President of the Michigamme English Setter Club, host of this year’s National, and on behalf of the entire membership, I would like to thank everyone for coming and making it the largest National Specialty in recent years!

In addition to the ESAA board members, I would like to give a huge thank-you to our Show Chairman, Sandy Miller and her co-chair, Lynda Chase. The work and effort that these two ladies put in for the last two years is nothing short of amazing! The amount of planning and attention to detail was phenomenal and never ending, these ladies worked their fannies off!

Another person that I would like to recognize is our “unofficial” co-chairperson, Dean Miller. Dean commanded Hospitality EVERY night, even providing dinner to all that wanted it on Tuesday night. Dean along with Glenn Godley also arranged for and installed the 100,000 watt generator that we needed to handle all of the hair dryers! Thanks for all of your hard work, Dean!

Just to highlight a few more things: Welcome bags were outstanding-thanks Terry and Diane Kuhn!

Grooming space- plastic applied and taped off- Judy Hunter, Sandy Charkowske The grounds were kept extremely clean by Glenn and Sue Godley- Thanks!

Hunt Test/Field Trial- These two events were hugely successful- we doubled the entries in the FT over last year’s inaugural event. We hope this remains as a mainstay at the ESAA National. Thanks to Sandy Moody, Kim McVeigh and Mary Kay Iverson for all of your hard work!

Obedience and Rally entries were way up- it was so much fun to see these talented dogs and handlers perform!

The Futurity and Maturity showed off all of the up and coming youngsters with the Futurity winner earning the Dick Fox CHIC award for having both of her parents with CHIC numbers.

Veteran Sweeps, as always, an emotional event was expertly judged by Brian Schramm.

The Top Twenty committee outdid themselves, setting the bar high for next year! Great job, Amy Duncan and your army of worker bees!

Thursday seemed like the busiest day of the National week, with conformation judging, followed by the National Raffle, (Cheryl Heithaus and Brenda Fischer) Junior activies (Carl Necker) and Jill Warren’s outstanding slide show! Thanks, Jill, the laughter and tears were flowing like crazy!

The Judges Education was next (Greg McCarthy) along with “Free Office Call” with canine repro expert Dr. Robert Hutchinson. (Lindsey Cook) The infamous pajama party was held in the hotel “saloon” and had huge attendance! Prizes were awarded for best bowlers and pajamas.

(Kathy Rodriguez) On Friday the winners of the 2015 National were crowned followed by a delicious ESAA annual banquet (Tony and Penny DiSiena). The super, outstanding trophies were lovingly painted by Deb Jauron and funds collected by Lisa Levelle. Wonderful job, ladies!

Annual awards were handed out by Judy Mates (compiled by Peggy Dunsmuir) and again followed by MESC hospitality.

We ended the week with the MESC specialty and an ES agility trial embedded in an all-breed trial in Cleveland. Thanks to Carl Necker and Jill Warren for spearheading that event. Trophies for MESC were done by Elizabeth Buege and Sandy Charkowske.

Our National was expertly promoted and advertising handled by Lisa Moreau and Kathy Cunningham-Roy. Our memories, in both candid and win photos, were preserved by Garth Gourlay. Thanks for all of the around the scenes pictures, Garth!

In the eight days of the National, our ES had the choice of participating in six different events. We even had one dog compete in all six- an amazing feat in and of itself!

Thanks again to all that participated, and all of the members of MESC who filled in by selling catalogs, logo wear, bartending and providing decorations to make this a hugely successful event. It truly takes a village!

Preferred Reserved Paid Grooming Reservation Westchester Ballroom Winter Garden Specialties February 12, 13 & 14, 2016

First day for reservations to be received is Tuesday December 1st.

Winter Garden Specialties will have reserved preferred grooming space available to buy. There are also free unreserved grooming spaces adjacent to the ballrooms; some free spaces will have access to paid electric.

Each space is 10 foot deep and 6.5 feet wide and those reserving first will be inside the Ballroom. There are only 27 spaces available inside. When those spots are filled, as in 2015, we have another room directly across the hallway from the ballroom (Town of Rye room) with 17 spots which will be sold for preferred grooming spots. When those spots are full there are 6 spots available down the hallway in one of the "tree" rooms.

Reservations will be taken in order received, with preference given to those reserving all three days, then 2 days. Only mailed reservations with payment will be accepted; Fed Ex , UPS ok but be sure to sign no signature required release . No hand deliveries.

Spaces are $20 per day. If electric is desired, that should be reserved and paid for separately using the contact info in the premium list or purchased at show. Every preferred spot will have access to electricity as needed and paid for!

Email confirmation will be sent to those who get reservations, as well as those whose reservation did not arrive in time to secure one of the spots. There WILL be access to spots on Thursday for those who reserve for the weekend. _________

Hi Everyone, It is once again time to renew your ESAA membership! The membership renewal period is from Nov 1, 2015March 1, 2016.

Important points about your renewal: 1. The renewal deadline is MARCH 1, 2016. If I do not have your renewal by that date you will have to reapply as a new member. So please renew as soon as possible. I really hate being the bad guy who has to tell someone who has been a member for years that they have to reapply for membership!!!

2. You can renew your membership in one of two ways: PREFERRED METHOD: Renew online through the website. Go to www.esaa.com , click on membership and then click on online membership renewal. Use PayPal to pay your renewal fee. It is quick and easy and you don’t have to worry about your application/check getting lost in the mail!

Or you can renew by printing your membership renewal form (which is available in the Newsletter or on the website under membership) and mailing it to me with a check for your renewal fee. My mailing address is at the bottom of the renewal form. Make all checks payable to ESAA. 3. Within a week of receiving your renewal I will send a renewal confirmation by email. Please watch for this! If you do not receive a confirmation please contact me.

4. I will periodically send out blanket reminders to the whole membership about renewing. Ignore this if you have already renewed!! Once you receive your renewal confirmation from me you are good for 2016.

5. Please do not forget to indicate whether you prefer to receive your newsletter electronically or by postal mail. Again anyone opting to receive their newsletter electronically will receive a $15 discount coupon that can be applied towards purchase of the annual, your breeders listing, an ad in the newsletter, etc.

Coupons will be emailed.

6. If you have a household membership, please make sure you list the second member. If renewing online the second member can be listed in the “instruction to merchant” section.

7. Lastly, make sure to update your address, email and phone number if it has changed from last year so I can make changes to the membership database.
