Defence Contracts: Burghfield & Aldermaston

2016 to present

Walkways - Project MENSA

Combined value: £6m

We were contracted to install all the structural steel walkways including steel grated flooring and steel stairs inside the main building of project MENSA; these were installed using 5t Valla cranes.Wearecurrentlyworkingon“walkwaystrengtheningworks” -a new package for the walkways, installed by Security Check (SC) cleared personnel only, working closely with our client to aid the re-design of the clipping system to navigate the floor access for underfloorservices.

Partitions - Project MENSA

ESSteelwonthecontracttoinstallallthestructuralsteelpartition walls within the MENSA project. The contract is 98% complete. We are currently working on design changes within the package under instruction from the client, with a further package of works to install the fragmentation walls inside the MENSA building as an extensiontoourcontractvaluedat£238k.

Catenary Towers - Project MENSA

The project was to undertake the installation of 14 towers. The Catenary towers were pre-assembled in the client’s yard in Bolton and transported to Reading where they were installed, ready for the cables to be pulled through. The towers were installed around the perimeter of the MENSA building, these were approximately 44mtallandinstalledwithcranesrangingfrom40tto130twiththe useof150ftMEWPs.

New Steam and Condensate Pipe - Aldermaston

Wewerecontractedtoassembletheunitsandpre-fabricatedracks at a local site in Bromborough, Wirral, then transport them to Aldermastonforinstallation.Therewasarangeofcranesusedfrom 40t-300t. The installation was undertaken by SC and Developed Vetting(DV)clearedpersonnelonly.

2016 to present B38

Combined value: £5m

Working over the radiation barrier, with full face masks and radiation PPE. Working for 45-minute intervals. and we were awarded this work on a time & materials basis.

BEPPS – DIFF Project

ES Steel were selected to install the structural steelwork to the BEPPS Diff Project and worked closely with both M&W and Kier Infrastructure. The installation of structural steelwork was made more complex by its association and proximity to an existing structure. There was good collaboration between all partners on site and regular Safety Leadership Team meetings created a highly focused approach to safety.

Shield Doors

ES Steel were approached by HPSL/ M&W on the BEPPS1/DIFF project within the Sellafield site to install the lid lift and transfer cell shield door guides, guide rails, support stools and associated mechanical items to allow each of the 10 tonne shield doors to be installed, these doors will provide shielding from the radioactive inventory. Each of the items installed had to be lined, leveled, and welded to within +/- 1mm of design position to allow the doors to function properly, a task that was achieved on schedule.

Sellafield BEP

ES Steel were approached by William Hare Group to complete the erection of the BEP building as we already had the experience with working on the BEPPS DIFF Project over the previous two years. This was a cost-plus agreement that has run smoothly while maintain our high safety standards.

Sellafield PPP - New build SIXEP Continuity Plant (SCP)

Once operational, the plant will contain 7 of the bespoke stainless-steel vessels which help to treat liquid waste, acting as the ‘kidneys’ of the Sellafield site filtering out nuclear material before being safely discharged to sea. Tower crane access has been a challenge but overall, this has been a steady contract. The SCP facility is being delivered by the Programme and Project Partners (PPP) at Sellafield.
