ERVIN NEWSLETTER 2

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Hello Ervin Family!

I’m writing this note to you all as we gear up to interview the Class of 2028! We’ve had an amazingly busy year and this newsletter will give you a glimpse at the many exciting developments that the Ervin Program has experienced over this time

As we started Fall Orientation back in August, I opened with a challenge for all of our scholars and myself How do we lead with intentionality? How do we show that intentionality when we show up at our jobs, in our classes, and in our extracurriculars, even our homes? How do we intentionally make time for ourselves and for those around us? And as a Program, how do we make sure that everything we do for our scholars and alumni are done with intentionality and care, considering the impact we have on those around us?

I couldn’t be more proud about how the Ervin Scholars have taken up this challenge and applied it in their own lives. With the loss of Mrs. Ervin last year, the Newsletter Committee wanted to celebrate the life that this amazing woman led and the profound impact she had on generations of scholars. At our annual Bench Commemoration, we were able to share in some truly touching moments with her family as we celebrated and remembered the legacy of the Ervin Family. As the Office of Scholar Programs shifted from the garden level of the Women’s Building to the third floor of the DUC, we as a program asked ourselves how we could intentionally utilize the space to foster an even stronger community. We’ve hosted paint nights, game nights, movies, even a Super Bowl Party in our new space, bringing scholars from across the Ervin, Danforth and Rodriguez Programs together for fellowship and laughter

This semester we launched the Ervin Senior Seminar as a way to intentionally transition our graduates from life as college students to life as alumni We’re discussing not only life skills like financial literacy and cooking, but also how we live out the Ervin Legacy beyond the steps we walk on this campus

The Ervin Scholars Program is one the embraces challenge and opportunity Our alumni have known this for many years And I’m very proud to say that our current scholars are also embracing the challenges that life as a college student can bring And in the midst of the challenges of everyday life on campus, they’re supporting each other as they develop into the leaders of the future. I couldn’t be more proud when I leave the office at the end of the work day, when I shut the light off and turn off my computer, to be leading our scholars’ development. Our scholars continue to impress me with their work and accomplishments on and off campus, and I’m so thankful for every Ervin Alum, staff, faculty, and family member who helps make my job that much easier to support them. As we draw closer to the end of my second year in this position, I can’t help but think about how bright the future of the Ervin Scholars Program looks here at Washington University in St. Louis.

We are stepping into that future together, leading this campus and the world together, with intentionality. I hope you enjoy this newsletter and remember - Once an Ervin, Always an Ervin

BENCH COMMEMORATION

In November 1993, shortly after Dr. John Bernard Ervin’s death, Ervin Scholars dedicated a bench in Brookings Quadrangle in his memory. The Bench, which sits northwest of the entrance to Holmes Lounge, was the site of the first commemoration program. Each fall, in a quiet candle-lit ceremony, scholars share what it means to carry the legacy of Dr. John B. Ervin forward.

“We owe it to Dr Ervin and to all the incredible people who have helped continue his legacy to take up space To show up To show each other love and gratitude and empathy ”

Attendees speak of Dr Ervin’s legacy, his values, and dedication to education They also share recollections about his life and the program. For decades now, Dr. Ervin’s family has traditionally attended the ceremony Because Dr Ervin donated his body to science, the bench continues to provide a place of quiet reflection and comfort for all who continue the legacy
