It‛s Showtime

By the time you read this, the Ermelo Agricultural Festival, Ermelo Highveld Show or just the Show (call it what you will) will be only four weeks away.

Love it, hate it or love to hate it, the reality is the Ermelo Show is the only event in Ermelo that draws a few thousand people of all kinds and creeds together in one place at one time.

Sure, there are other events that take place in and around the town that provide people with an opportunity to go out in numbers and mingle and have an enjoyable time. But these events are usually only attended by a handful of people or at the most on rare occasions, a few hundred people. Even some events at our local schools are poorly attended by the general public.

So, despite the criticism by some that the Ermelo Show is boring and is the same year after year, it still draws the crowds.

Who will ever forget the crowd-drawing consternation caused by Jonty the “horse” that parachuted out of a helicopter? That was a crowd-puller if ever there was one!

Even if we go to the show simply to see who goes there, we still go. On any one of the three days for the duration of the show, even the staunchest critics are out and about, off their couches and away from the TV’s,

trying hard not to enjoy what they are seeing and experiencing. The sights and sounds of people milling about enjoying themselves, sipping slush puppies, eating popcorn, doughnuts and potato spirals and just happy to be out and about surely can’t be all that bad. You might even see how a mommy sits on a bowl of jelly and custard that was put down by hubby to keep her place. That was amusing.

Yes, most years it rains, and the shoes and feet get wet and muddy, but for years afterwards we take delight in telling friends and family just HOW wet and muddy things were. “The mud I stepped in was thicker, deeper and yuckier than everybody else’s!”

Still, we go back year after year.

For those who do like attending the Ermelo Show, enjoy it once again. For those who do not like the show but still go anyway, be careful – you might just enjoy it.

So, let’s all gear up and get ourselves into show-mode! It only happens once a year and those irritating glow-in-the-dark flying thingy’s and whatnot’s that the kids insist on buying are usually forgotten about a week after the show anyway.

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO TOWN? Ermelo will soon be abuzz with classic cars and motorsport enthusiasts preparing for the biggest classic car rally in Africa.

Thanks to Ermelo Toyota’s involvement, passion and rich history with motorsport in South Africa, Ermelo will be the starting point of the 2018 SA-MOZ Rally with Ermelo Toyota on board as partner.

This event, previously known as the LM Classic Car Rally, will start in Ermelo on Friday, 27 April, race through Swaziland and finish in Mozambique on the 1st of May. This year, 55 drivers will traverse the 750km over 3 days of actual racing. The first stage is the longest, covering a distance of 340km followed by two shorter stages of 189km and 131km.

The history of this rally dates as far back as 1952 when the Pretoria Motor Club organized the first Pretoria-LM Rally and despite negativity from some quarters, the rally was a success and gained national status in 1954.

In 1957 TOTAL SA became the major sponsor for this event that grew to be the most prestigious event on the racing calendar after being granted international status in 1964 and became known as the TOTAL International Rally.

Political instability in Mozambique resulted in the event running there for the last time in 1973, after which it continued within the South African borders until TOTAL withdrew their sponsorship after the 1977 event.

Ten years later a commemorative rally was organized to celebrate TOTAL’s 30-year involvement in motorsport, this sparked new enthusiasm and in 1990 the

Pretoria-LM rally sprang to life again, still running within the borders of South Africa until 5 years later, when a small group of competitors entered the event that returned to the Mozambican capital for the first time in 22 years.

In 2011 a new concept was introduced as an experiment with formats of two wellknown overseas events, the 1000 Millas and the historical Monte Carlos Style.

Due to popularity, the Monte Carlos Style

was retained in 2012 and will also be used in this year’s event. In 2016 the event came under threat again with the organizers notifying competitors after the race that they would not be continuing with the event.

As previously proven throughout the history of this event – the race will go on, and new organizers came on board and hosted their first race, which started in Witbank with an exciting journey through the Kruger National Park en route to

Swaziland, last year.

Johan Strydom, finansiële adviseur by Sanlam, sê die gebrek aan spaarfondse noop baie Suid-Afrikaners om skuld aan te gaan om selfs die geringste finansiële probleme die hoof te bied.

Baie mense spaar nie omdat hulle nie sien waar hulle kontant in hul beperkte begrotings kan afknyp nie. En dié wat kontraktuele spaarprodukte het, verhoog selde hul bydraes tot meer as die verpligte jaarlikse verhogings wat hul produkverskaffers toepas.

Johan sê as 'n mens net 5% meer tot jou spaarproduk bydra, kan dit jou help om jou doelwit vinniger te bereik. Net so kan die betaling van 5% meer as jou minimum maandelikse paaiement jou skuldterugbetalingstydperk aansienlik verkort.

Sanlam se berekenings toon dat indien 'n persoon R25 000 p.m. verdien en 15% per maand tot hul werkgewer-geborgde aftreefonds bydra, hul maandelikse besparing R3 750 sal wees. Indien hierdie bedrag vir 40 jaar gespaar word en met inflasie styg, kan die persoon 66% van hul inkomste voor aftrede kry wanneer hulle aftree. Deur net 5%, of R188, per maand ekstra te spaar, kan dit styg tot 69% van inkomste voor aftrede. Indien die bydrae ook jaarliks met 1% meer as inflasie verhoog word, kan die aftree-inkomste tot 80% styg, teen 'n veronderstelde inflasiekoers van 6% en 'n beleggingsopbrengs van 9% p.j. na aftrekking van fooie. *Die illustratiewe waardes hierbo word nie gewaarborg nie, en moenie in enige opsig as 'n akkurate vooruitskatting beskou word nie.

Johan sê dit is heeltemal moontlik om te spaar of geld vir maandelikse skuldterugbetalings opsy te sit, selfs al leef 'n mens van salaristjek tot salaristjek.

Die geheim is om hierdie patroon om van die hand in die tand te leef, te verbreek. 'n Strategie om die geld te spaar wat ná besteding oorbly, sal waarskynlik nie slaag of jou help om die salaristjek-patroon hierbo af te skud nie. Jy moet die teenoorgestelde doen.

Hier is 'n paar wenke van Sanlam wat jou kan help om selfs met 'n beperkte begroting te spaar: - Betaal jouself eerste: Sit geld opsy om te spaar sodra jy jou salaris kry – 'n outomatiese aftrekking is die beste manier om dit te doen.

- Verhoog die debietorder van jou skuldterugbetaling: Moenie net 'n ekstra betaling doen as daar geld oor is nadat jy geld uitgegee het nie. Laat jou krediteure die ekstra terugbetalings aftrek sodra jy betaal word.

- Spaar vir 'n doelwit: Of dit nou 'n deposito op 'n huis, jou kinders se opvoeding of 'n gemaklike aftrede is, dit is makliker om te spaar as die spaardoelwit 'n realiteit en vir jou belangrik is – in teenstelling met wanneer jy spaar net omdat “almal behoort te spaar”.

- Herevalueer jou skuld: Probeer om by goeie skuld te hou (bv. huisverband, studiegeld) en gebruik kontant vir ander uitgawes in plaas van krediet- of winkelkaarte. Jy betaal hoë rente op korttermynskuld – probeer dus om dit so vinnig as moontlik af te betaal. Sodra die skuld afbetaal is, spaar die geld wat voorheen vir skuldterugbetaling gebruik is.

- Beperk nie-noodsaaklike uitgawes: Begin jou besteding aan nie-noodsaaklike items aanteken. Besluit watter van hierdie items jy bereid is om prys te gee. Probeer ook goedkoper alternatiewe kry vir aktiwiteite waaraan jy dikwels deelneem.

Kaap ontmoet. Hy was op ’n bergfiets met sy spidermanfietsryklere. Om die 113km op ’n bergfiets in daai stof en hitte te ry sit nie in enige man se broek nie. Glo my, as jy met jou kar daar ry, lyk alles plat. Klim op jou fiets en dis net op en af en op en weer op en dan so bietjie af en dan weer op. Spidey het hier gery soos wat die pro’s dit doen wat nog nooit meer as ’n tiekie en ’n wind geweeg het nie. Ek het hom sedertdien al op die 51/50 triathlon, op Bela Bela, se eindstreep afgeneem. Dan sien ek hy het die naweek die Ironman, 1.9km swem, 90.1km fietsry en 21.1km draf klaargemaak.

Kyk, Spidey was eens op ’n tyd ’n mannetjie van so net bokant 280kg, ja 280kg!. Hy besluit toe genoeg is genoeg en hy begin reg eet en oefen, en oefen, en oefen, en nóg oefen….

Vandag weeg die man skaars meer as ’n baksteen en ’n bergfiets. Ek dink ek moet dalk ook probeer om die triathlon te doen, maar nie met ’n Spidermankostuum nie.

As daar nou een ding is waarmee ons ou volkie sukkel dan is dit gewig en gewigsverlies. Maar daar is een ou, kom ons noem hom Spidey, wat ek so ‘n jaar of wat terug ontmoet het wat die wenresep vir hierdie probleem gevind het. Dalk moes oom Arno se skoolpel, oom Hendrikus, destyds al hierdie jongman se raad gevolg het.

So het oom Hendrikus, die maerste en kleinste outjie in die katkisasieklas, jare terug by ‘n jong aanvallige nooientjie gaan kuier, maar toe hy op die plaas aankom toe sien hy die nooientjie wat hy al die jare in die katkisasieklas so van ’n kant af beloer het, is toe sy verlangse niggie. Die kersopsittery sou nooit deug nie en dit sou tyd mors wees, want g’n pa wat sy sout werd is, sal so ‘n kuiery of trouery toelaat nie. Hy vra haar toe maar of sy nie ’n vriendin het waar hy sy geluk kan gaan probeer nie, want sy pa het gesê dis tyd lat hy vrou vang, want man alleen bly word die skinderonderwerp op die dorp. Sy sê toe van ’n nooientjie op ’n plaas verder uit die distrik uit. Haar pa soek vir haar ’n vryer, want sy moet trou anders gaan hy haar erfplaas verkoop, want as sy nie trou en ’n nageslag daarstel nie, is dit nie die moeite werd om die plaas te hou nie. So skryf hy maar ’n brief en vra die oom se toestemming om te kan kom kersopsit. Dit was nie lank nie toe kom die antwoord by die poskantoor terug. Die oom was maar te bly dat iemand by sy dogter wil kom kuier en na so ses briewe heen en weer is die datum en tyd vasgemaak vir die groot kersopsit. So is oom Hendrikus daar weg op sy perd, goed geroskam en die saal goed gepoleer en sy kisklere in sy saalsak met ’n stuk biltong vir die oom en beskuit vir die tannie. Vir die nooientjie het hy nie geweet wat om te vat nie, toe vat hy maar niks. So aangekom op die plaas stormloop die oom hom tegemoet en die tante nie ver agter nie, die nooientjie het in die kombuis gewag. Nou ek moet bysê, daar was ’n rede waarom sy in die kombuis gewag het, maar ek laat dit daar. Toe oom Hendrikus haar sien toe besef hy hier kom moeilikheid, want sy is ’n paar maal sy grootte en sy gaan hom laat werk totdat hy bly lê. En so het dit toe gebeur dat hy nooit die plaas verlaat het nie en homselwers gewerk het soos net ’n groot vrou ’n klein mannetjie kan maak werk. Wat van oom Hendrikus geword het, weet bitter min mense, maar ek weet een ding... hy het maerder geword en die tannie groter.

Maar terug by my vriend Spidey. Ek het Spidey die eerste keer op Ulco, iewers tussen Delportshoop en Koopmansfontein, in die Noord-

“Ou goed bring NUWE HOOP”

Die Ermelo-tak van Ons Winkel, Helpende Hand se skenkingswinkel, het 5 Januarie 2018 sy deure oopgemaak.

Nie net dien die onderneming as werkskepping vir die persoon wat die winkel bestuur nie, maar stel uit ’n groot gedeelte van die wins van die verkope Studiefondse beskikbaar vir kinders in die gemeenskap wat nie andersins ‘n geleentheid sou gehad het om verder te studeer nie.

Bykomende maatskaplike hulp word ook aangespreek deur middel van die wins wat die winkel genereer. Die Ermelo winkel was reeds vanjaar ondermeer betrokke by die skooltassieprojek.

Ons Winkel is heeltemal afhanklik van die gemeenskap se skenkings van tweedehandse goedere wat dan weer spotgoedkoop verkoop word om minderbevoorregtes te help.

Skenkings van enige tweedehandse items wat nog nut vir ’n ander mag hê soos bruikbare klere, speelgoed, kampgoed, gereedskap, kombuisware tot elektroniese ware word hartlik ontvang.

Me. Janine Strydom, bestuurder van die winkel vertel dat hulle nog net geseënd is vandat die winkel in Januarie oopgemaak het.

“Ek het ’n groot verrassing gekry, Ermelo se mense se harte is baie groot” vertel Janine wat oorspronklik van Bethal is en slegs ’n paar maande op Ermelo woonagtig is.

Sy versoek ook die gemeenskap om hul ou

aandrokke, skoene en juwele te skenk sodat dogters wat nie kan bekostig om hul matriekafskeid by te woon nie ook die geleentheid gegun kan word.

Blaai gerus deur “Ons Winkel Ermelo” se Facebookblad wat gereeld opdateer word met interessante items wat te koop is.

Wie weet, dalk kry jy net daai ou ‘handige ding’ of ‘skat’ waarna jy jarelank al soek.

Het jy geweet: met jou skenking van tweedehandse goedere kan daar moontlik, om net ’n paar te noem, dié jaar vir 16 mense werksgeleenthede geskep word, 70 plakkerskampdames bederf word met toiletware en studiehulp verleen word aan 15 studente.

Post-holiday Blues?

However, the minute we try to please others and not ourselves, or do things for others because it’s what they want, we start feeling resentful and depressed.

Hence, we find ourselves in a state of ‘blues’, having feelings of depression, hopelessness and helplessness.

So, how do you deal with the ‘blues’?

You identify what is bothering you, what is making you feel the way you do, and you ask yourself if you are being realistic about

the situation.

Remember, what you are feeling depressed about is a wake-up call, a sign that you are not living up to your expectations and you are trying to please others over and above what is important to you, by having unrealistic expectations of others and yourself.

Once you ask yourself these questions honestly you will know the answers, because they lie deep within you.

Remember the quality of your life depends on the quality of questions you ask yourself…

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome We all know someone’s brother’s aunt or some connection that has Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) but we may not specifically be aware of what it actually is. Occupational Therapists can actually perform hand-therapy for different conditions and injuries and can become highly specialised in the field.

So, back to the uncle’s friend’s brother’s CTS! Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by pressure on the nerves that run through your wrists. This causes temporary numbness in the hands which can progress to permanent loss of feeling. Other symptoms include pain, tingling, weak grip and clumsiness and swelling in the hands.

CTS has many causes such as arthritis, injuries, fluid retention, thyroid conditions and diabetes. However, CTS can also be caused by activities such as repetitive movements, keeping the wrist bent for long

periods and poor posture in daily tasks.

If you experience numbness or pain in your hands in the morning, you might be sleeping on your hands or bending them in your sleep. Try sleeping in different positions so that your hands aren’t bent all night. Gloves and splints are available in stores and pharmacies that can provide support to prevent this.

When sitting at the computer, be observant of your wrist position. Move the keyboard closer or further away so your wrists are straight or angled up slightly. Be mindful of how you hold your phone or tablet as those addictive games can also be a source of your pain! If you are experiencing the abovementioned symptoms please consult your doctor. These are only a few prevention strategies and not treatment for existing CTS, but don’t worry, Occupational Therapists can help with that too!

#MyBagsArePacked Adventure in Swaziland…

For some, having an adventure-filled holiday is high on their wish list and why not hop over for a weekend or longer to Swaziland to do just that! Yes, be surprised by the vast amount of adventure and adrenalin activities in this small little country right on our doorstep!

Some of the things you can experience in Swaziland is enough to get the adrenalin junkie’s heart pumping and includes whiteriver rafting, abseiling, zip-lining, caving and kloofing. For slightly less adrenalin pumping activities, choose between hiking, horse riding, horse safaris, mountain biking, rhino tracking and team building activities to name a few.

Let’s start with the adrenalin pumping activities as Swaziland’s mountains, valleys and rivers and other natural wonders make it the ideal place for adrenalin seekers.

Starting with a little-known activity, caving is a way to literally get below the surface of Swaziland and explore the subterranean passages which are part of the only major granite cave system known in Southern Africa. These comprise of 800m of watereroded chambers 90m below the surface with names like ‘Key Hole’, ‘French Connection’ and ‘Platform Nine’ (that one is for the Harry Potter fans). Warning: participants should be reasonably fit, aged between 8 and 65 and be able to fit through narrow passageways to participate in this unique activity. The two-hour course is a guided tour and all the equipment needed is

provided.

Next, the Malolotaja Nature Reserve is home to the first and only Canopy Tree Top Tour that is located in the Sihlotswane Gorge where a 50m suspension bridge and 11 wooden platforms have been affixed to the steep sides, providing you with a ‘bird’seye’ view of the forests below while you zipline along the steel cables, with some of them over 300m long. This is an activity that can be enjoyed by all ages and is quite breathtaking. Staying with ‘heights,’ why not try rock climbing and abseiling as in this mountainous country, there are ample opportunities to do just that.

Another firm favourite is white-water rafting and the trip down the Usutu River, between Sidvokodvo and Siphofaneni, in the centre of Swaziland, takes you on thundering water through clefts and gorges, alternating with calmer stretches at times.

For most of the year this trip is graded as a medium difficulty (Grade III) rafting river, but in its peak flow it can get up to a Grade IV, V or even VI, which the rafting trips avoid. For first-timers, the best time to go is during the low water season which is between May to October.

You can choose between a two-man raft without a guide or a ten-man raft with a guide. For the not so adventurous but outdoor fun-loving visitors, tubing is also an option and this is done on calmer waters where one can float down the Ngwempisi river for a more relaxed water experience to

admire the spectacular beauty and scenery.

For those who love to be outdoors, there are a myriad of walks and trails all over the country, varying from a few hour’s hikes to many days in duration. This is also the case when it comes to horse riding as you can choose between short trails and those over a number of days. There are a large variety of destinations and these include both flat and mountainous trails. For the mountain biking enthusiast, Swaziland is the ultimate place to explore and there are a number of biking events which are hosted throughout the year, with the biggest and most popular one being in June, called the IMVELO Classic which is in the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary. Another favourite is the Inyati Swazi Frontier mountain bike stage race where teams of two tackle a 3-day trail armed with a GPS as the trail is unmarked.

This event takes place in October every year so be sure to look it up if this is what flicks your adventure switch!

Yes, Sibebe Rock is a mammoth granite mountain and rises 350m above the valley of the Mbuluzi River.

CYA’s song is the cream of the crop Siyabonga Mngomezulu better known as CYA is a young up-and-coming rapper born in the dusty streets of Ermelo.

His love and passion for music began while in high school when he and his friends listened to music of various local artists.

In 2009 he began writing his own lyrics, recorded his songs on his phone and allowed his friends to be his critics.

After matriculating in 2013, CYA pursued his dream of a career in music and becoming a solo recording artist. He subsequently released singles that were aired on radio and got a chance to showcase his talent on national television.

His first professional music video was shot with STQ Pictures and he participated in live performances on national and community radio stations which boosted his fan base.

Apart from being inspired by other artists, he curved a niche for himself as a prolific songwriter and rapper.

His music appeals to a wide audience and has a bit of a Kasi flavour and is gritty with catchy English and Zulu hooks.

CYA entered "Route 40 Talent Search - 2013" and ended up claiming 2nd place which gave him a chance to share a stage with Vusi Mahlasela, Prime Circle, ISO, Paige Mac and many more.

In 2014 CYA was discovered by the award-winning theatre actor and SABC Radio personality, Biziwe Masango of Ikwekwezi FM, who afforded him the opportunity to work with the likes of Thulibathi, Bertrum (Tanzania), J-Arrow, Jay Spitter, Nicey Beats, Biziwe, Swatie KhingKhong, L-Boss, Weza, BYK, Mr Zetman, Kenanji (Malawi) and Bluetooth.

CYA is currently working on an extended project that will be released soon.

His latest single "iMali" featuring Jay Spitter of Mabala Noise won best Hip-Hop Song of the Year, and was awarded Best Male Artist of the Year at this year’s BFM awards.

MEC Bal reached out

to the learners of Lungelo Combined School on Monday and during her visit she commended the learners for their devotion to their schoolwork and reminded them of the importance of an education. Each learner received a sweets pack for no reason other than just to brighten up their day.

Wool market Analysis Prices for good quality long-wool took a dive on this week's auction in pursuit of the lower Australian market.

The stronger Rand against the US Dollar also had an impact in this regard. Long-wool of 19micron and finer shed some 5%, while 19-21micron wool lost 4% and 21-22micron traded 2% cheaper.

The stronger micron groups were down by a slight 1,5%. The national market indicator is currently at R185.56 per kilogram clean-yield, a loss of 3,3% compared to the previous week. The highest price for OVK this week went to Wienand Farming of Somerset East. This was for a BMY lot of 16,7micron and was purchased by Standard Wool.

At the third auction of 2018 prices were somewhat down. This came in the wake of a 1,8% decline on the Australian market. At R185.56 the national market indicator is currently down by a slight 1% from the last auction of 2017. This is insignificant, bearing in mind that the Rand strengthened by more than 12% against the US Dollar during the same period.

Competition remains firm, with buyers on the alert that the next few auctions may not produce sufficient volumes for their demand.

Deliveries of wool in South Africa are on the wane when compared with last year.

This is mainly due to the crippling drought which is prevalent over large areas of the country. Many farmers don't have any grazing left and are compelled to buy feed for their stock - which brings about high costs.

#Recipe #Resep Baked Cheesy Bread Ingredients 2tbsp butter 2tbsp cake flour 500ml milk 12 slices white bread 1½ cups cheddar cheese, grated 6 slices of ham 6 slices of Melrose Melts 1 tomato, chopped Salt to taste Pepper to taste Method Melt butter in pot, once melted add flour and stir. Slowly add the milk, stirring consistently until the sauce has thickened.

Toast 12 slices of bread. Grate the cheddar cheese and add 1 cup grated cheese to the white sauce. Stir until the cheese has melted. Grease a baking tray with butter. Place 6 slices of toast into the tray topped with a slice of ham and a slice of Melrose melts and tomato on each toast slice. Cover each toast slice with the second slice of toast to create a sandwich and pour the cheese sauce over the sandwiches. Season with salt and pepper.

Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the sandwiches and bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 5 minutes or until the cheese is golden.

Serve with a side salad and ENJOY!

Errie vlamme brand hoog Die Graad 11 dirigente van Hoërskool Ermelo Dorpshuis saam met hul ouers het ʼn fondsinsamelingsprojek in samewerking met Jakes Warricker en Louw Greyling van Butr Café aangebied. ʼn Braai-off tussen verteenwoordigers van EHS en Chef Jakes het verlede Saterdag, 27 Januarie, by Kralinbergh venue te midde van groot opgewondenheid plaasgevind. Die doel was om die braaier van die jaar te identifiseer.

Fernskloof Organiese wynplaas van Prince Albert het hulle wynmaker, Diederik le Grange, laat invlieg om hul produk aan Ermelo bekend te stel. Elke gas het ʼn glas wyn van hulle keuse by aankoms ontvang.

Na ʼn spanningsvolle beoordelingsproses en die proe van elke dis, is die wenner aangewys. Terence Geoghegan, die slagter van Allan’s Slaghuis het met gebraaide kreef en ʼn perfek voorbereide T-bone weggestap met die eer as die beste braaier.

Annuschka Matthee, Joanie Grobler en Lee-Anne Kruger van die EHS Hotelskool het saam met Chef Jakes en Chef Bongani van Butr ʼn heerlike aandete vir die gaste voorgesit. Later die aand het Chef

Ligbron Academy of Technology recently announced their Top Ten academic achievers for 2017 from Grade 8 to Grade 11.

Ligbron atlete vaar goed tydens eerste byeenkoms

Ligbron Akademie vir Tegnologie en HTS Middelburg se atlete het Vrydag, 26 Januarie, op HTS Middelburg se velde meegeding tydens ’n vriendskaplike atletiekbyeenkoms.

Die byeenkoms het in goeie gees plaasgevind en het ook as die finale uitdunne vir die Liggies gedien nadat die Interhuisbyeenkoms van Dinsdag, 23 Januarie, afgestel is weens reën. Die atlete van albei skole het besonder goed presteer en Ligbron is trots op elke atleet wat van die geleentheid gebruik gemaak het om deel te neem.

Die Liggies neem Vrydag, 2 Februarie, deel aan ’n vriendskaplike byeenkoms teen HTS Witbank op HTS se velde.

The Top Ten learners for 2017, Grade 8 are Lusanda Nkosi, Linda Sibiya, Zimele Vilakazi, Vuyelwa Malinga, Kethlelo Ncongwane, Siphokazi Maseko, Lindokuhle Khumalo, Sinthemba Mashiloane, Nompumelelo Mkhize and Sbongumusa Mbatha.

The top learner of each Grade is Lusanda Nkosi (Grade 8), Nobuhle Nqotheni (Grade 9), Nhlakanipho Mtambo (Grade 10) and Zikhona Sibanyoni (Grade 11).

KSA kamp

Die Karavaanklub van Suid Afrika (KSA) SuidHoëveld het die afgelope naweek, 26 to 28 Januarie, hulle eerste kampnaweek van 2018 by Loskopdam geniet.

Vrydagaand het die kampeerders lekker gebraai. André en Maggie Nel saam met André en Dorothy Erasmus het brood en slaaie asook bykosse voorsien.

Saterdagoggend was almal maar ’n bietjie lui, voordat die potte begin praat het. ’n Potjie van die Jaar kompetisie is gehou en elkeen het ’n smaaklike pot voorberei. Ongelukkig kan daar net een wenner wees en dié jaar was dit weer Barry en Annise Smit met ’n varkbouden-groentepot wat met ’n kortkop gewen het.

Ironic, don`t you think, that in the modernday version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the pretty blonde girl in Robert Southey`s story would undoubtedly be convicted for breaking and entering! Yet, we remember her getting a bad rap for being “finicky”. Goldilocks did not want the porridge that was too hot or too cold (who could blame the poor girl!), neither a chair that was too big or too small, nor a bed which was too soft or too hard – she wanted things to be… JUST RIGHT… Spoiled little brat, we all used to smirk, but - what if she just had high standards?

Isn`t everyone entitled to be a little picky in life? Whether it`s buying a new mattress, preparing a meal or joining a fitness club, all are investments in our lives, and it`s okay to experiment a little until we know what we really want. Too often we settle for less, whether it`s out of convenience or fear. And maybe, just maybe, we should all, today, take a page from Goldilocks, for she was a SMART, clever girl. Hear me out…

In a way we`re all just like Goldilocks.

Did you know that when you find a personal goal that is “just right” for you, you are most likely to stay motivated in the long term? This phenomenon has a name and is called “the Goldilocks effect”. German psychologist, Dr Herbert Laszlo, explains it like this: “The Goldilocks Rule states that humans experience peak motivation when working on tasks that are right on the edge of their current abilities. Not too hard. Not too easy. JUST. RIGHT. Human beings love challenges, BUT, only if they are within the optimal zone of difficulty.

Imagine you are playing tennis. If you try to play a serious match against a fouryear old, you`ll quickly become bored.

On the opposite end, if you try to play against someone like Australian champion Caroline Wozniacki, you`ll find yourself demotivated! Of course you would. I mean, really?! But compare these experiences to playing tennis against someone who is your equal. The challenge you are facing is “just manageable”. Victory is not guaranteed, but it`s possible. Science has found that there`s nothing more rewarding than to master a skill just beyond your current horizon.

Yeah, sounds sooo easy. But we`re not all

into tennis, and in real life it`s much more complicated. The trouble comes in trying to make this work on a practical level. What if “just right” for you has always been 10kg less than your current weight? What if you are someone who easily gets discouraged?

What if you`re a perfectionist with an allor-nothing approach to life? And what if you engage in a fitness routine, and have no idea whether you are working hard enough?

How do you know which barbell to use when the 5kg is too light and the 10kg too heavy?!

Luckily, when it comes to fitness we can gauge our workout intensity by using the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) scale.

This means asking yourself: “On a scale of 1 to 10, how difficult is this”? Okay, so 1 is sitting still and 10 is being chased by a bear. To get the best workout, you want to be somewhere between 6 and 8 on the RPE scale. A “JUST RIGHT” workout should leave you feeling like you exerted 70-80 percent of your energy – a great, intense workout, but not so devastating that you can`t even make it to your car and drive home…☺ Whether it`s losing weight or exercising, managing stress or achieving goals, in the end it all comes down to your definition of POSITIVE. Go too hard and positive is crushed. Go too soft and positive is overblown. I guess the “JUST RIGHT” positive spot lies somewhere in the middle of “change is work” and “change is possible.” It has to do with achieving that perfect blend of hard work and happiness.

Theodore Roosevelt famously said, “Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing”. The thing is, we want our stomachs to be flat and our arms to be strong, but we do not want to grind through workout after workout. We want the final results, but not the failed attempts that precede it. Anyone can want a gold medal. Few people want to train like an Olympian. I`m not surprised to see what American motivational speaker and writer Jonathan Haidt has to say about this.

In his book “The happiness Hypothesis” he states: “One of the keys to peak performance is getting immediate feedback about how you are doing. Seeing yourself

make progress is incredibly motivating.”

Our Fitness Challenges have proved time and again how the rush of positive feedback from one good body assessment is enough to inspire a participant for weeks! The human brain NEEDS some way to visualize progress to maintain motivation. We need to be able to see our wins. It`s as simple as that.

Long before the Goldilocks and the Three Bears fairy tale, Aristotle devised a philosophy of moderation – the middleground principle. It seems our Goldilocks was indeed not only pretty with all that golden hair and her peachy smile. She was a clever girl, after all. So, what can we learn from her? We need to challenge ourselves, but not too much. Once we have identified our own unique optimal challenge, we will be poised to feel that internal motivation to keep going through inevitable difficulties.

May you become Goldilocks-smart in 2018, aiming at goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. May you find the courage to sample

all the different “porridges” in life, figure out which kind you want and go after it in all your Goldilocks glory. Die Office National Ermelo Cycling Club het Sondag, 28 Januarie, aan ‘The Fast One’ fietswedren in Meyerton deelgeneem.

Dié wedren wat tradisioneel elke jaar op die laaste Sondag van Januarie plaasvind word as een van, indien nie dié vinnigste

fietswedrenne in Suid-Afrika beskou. Die roete sluit onderskeidelik ’n 49km en 97km afstand in.

Tollie wen Monthly Mug Die maandelikse Monthly Mug slagspelgholfkompetisie wat Saterdag op die Ermelo Gholfbaan plaasgevind het, is gewen deur Tollie Schoeman met ’n netto telling van 67. Koos Reinecke, met ’n netto telling van 69, is tweede geplaas en Janice Swanepoel, ook op 69 netto, derde na ’n uittel. 29 spelers het aan die kompetisie deelgeneem. Eerskomende Saterdag 3 Februarie, speel die maandelikse slagspelwenners van 2017 teen mekaar in ’n uitspeelwedstryd om die 2017 slagspelkampioen te bepaal.
