Ja-nee, daai kite gaan nie vlieg nie Ons het almal al gehoor van die uitdrukking, “Daai kite gaan nie vlieg nie.” Al is daar nou ’n properse Engelse woord tussen-in ingegooi, weet ons almal wat dit beteken.

Ons sê maar net, “Ja-nee, daai kite gaan nie vlieg nie,” dan klink ons vreeslik slim. So terloops, wat beteken “Ja-nee” nou eintlik?

Maar nou terug by die kite (‘skuus juffrou – vlieër). Boetie is opgewonde want Pa het gesê hy sal vir hom ’n kite maak as die

wind waai, en nou waai die wind mos dié tyd van die jaar. Maar om te sien hoe ’n regte tuisgemaakte kite onmoontlik nie sal kán vlieg weens verskeie tekortkominge met die ontwerp, plus die pa se tekort aan geduld, is nogal heel komieklik. Daar is ’n kite-vlieg teorie wat nêrens opgeteken is nie wat lui, “Die lengte van ’n mens se humeur verminder in direkte verhouding met die daling in die beskikbare windspoed.” Nou

Commercial deodorants are loaded with parabens and aluminium. The aluminium helps us to sweat less. A host of other harsh chemicals also reside in that innocent looking little roll-on. Clean eating means the end to bad body odours, but if you want a healthy deodorant, come and buy one from Quercus Honey and Health or make your own with this easy DIY recipe: Put 3 tablespoons Coconut Oil, 3 tablespoons Bicarbonate of Soda and 2 tablespoons Shea Butter in a little glass jar. Place the jar in a bowl with hot water and let it melt together (do not boil). Add a few drops of your favourite essential oils, like Lavender and Frankincense. Let it cool down to solidify. Put a tiny bit into the armpit area every morning.

If you want a more acidic deodorant, dilute a bit of apple cider vinegar with a bit of water. Add a few drops of essential oils such as tea tree. Wipe it on gently.

Die kite is gebou omdat die wind waai, nie vir wanneer die wind waai nie.

Pa gryp die kite en gooi dit in die lug op.

Die wind skep die kite, maar dit begin in die rondte te tol, soos ’n kombuis waaier. Nou moet Boetie die ding eerder vashou en in die lug opgooi as pa genoeg lyn gegee het.

“Een, twee drie!” skree pa. Boetie gooi, en pa pluk aan die lyn. Die kite skiet op, maar kom weer al tollende afgeduik aarde toe.

Ná so paar probeerslae, met die kleefband wat al minder aan die riete kleef, gaan lê die wind. Maar hulle hou aan probeer, maar ook net tot daai onopgetekende teorie van hoe minder wind – hoe korter die humeur in werking tree. Die papier en riete vorm ook nie juis meer ’n eenheid nie. Die Pa ruk en pluk aan die kite en dan frommel hy dit op.

Hy sal daai ander oom vra om ’n kite te bou want hy is oud en hy sal weet hoe om sulke goed te maak.

Askuus mnr…! As jy maar net gesê het die oom is SLIM en sal weet hoe om ’n kite te bou kon dit dalk gebeur het. Maar nou sê jy die oom is OUD en sal weet! Nee wat, nou gaan daai kite ook nie vlieg nie.

Plant ’n boom vir die nageslag

Die kleurvolle, briljante dr. Aart Juriaanse is 19 November 1873 in Kralingen, Nederland gebore en het met die uitbreek van die Anglo-Boereoorlog tussen Brittanje en die ZAR in Pretoria aangekom om hulp aan die Boere te verleen, met ’n volledig toegeruste veldambulans wat hy self vir dié doel ingerig het. Hy het hulp verleen

by Donkerhoek in Junie 1900 en was ook teenwoordig by die slag van Berg-en-Dal in Augustus van dieselfde jaar. Na dié veldslae was hy steeds aktief betrokke in die Ermelodistrik met behulp van ’n veldambulans wat tydens ’n vorige skermutseling by die Britte gebuit is. Die storie lui dat hy die ambulans oorgeverf en Hollandse bewoording daarop aangebring het sodat die Britte dit nie as hulle eie kon herken nie en doodluiters daarmee rondbeweeg het om beseerdes en

gewondes te help. Na afloop van die oorlog moes hy sy Mediese studies verder aan ’n Britse Universiteit voltooi ten einde te kon kwalifiseer om as Mediese Dokter in Suid-Afrika te kon praktiseer. Suid-Afrika het hom welgeval weens die ruimte en die klimaat en hy het goed met die Boere oor die weg gekom. Maar die sterkste magneet wat hom na Suid-Afrika getrek het, was Margaretha Magdalena Sluiter (Griet), die niggie van Willem Hendrik Buhrmann.

Buhrmann se plaas “De Emigratie” is in 1900 as hulphospitaal vir die Boerestryders en hul families ingerig. Hy wou met Griet trou en as geneesheer op Ermelo praktiseer.

Daarom was hy haastig om sy sake in Nederland te reël, toestemming van die Britte te ontvang om as medikus in SuidAfrika te praktiseer en terug te kom na SuidAfrika om met sy uitverkorene te trou en hom op Ermelo te vestig.

In Januarie 1904 het dr. Juriaanse sy algemene praktyk op Ermelo, waar Ermelo Sport vandag is, geopen en hom op sy plaas Kralingen, ’n buurplaas van De Emigratie, op Buhrmannskop net buite Ermelo gevestig. Daar het hy ’n varkboerdery begin, en het van tradisionele Hollandse boerderymetodes, wat onder meer die aanplant van rye en rye akkerbome (eike) kruis en dwars oor die plaas behels het. Die varke het floreer op die voedsame akkers, wat bekend is vir die lieflike tekstuur en geur van Hollandse varkvleis. Hy het glo vertel dat as sy nageslag nie vir die varke wil sorg nie, die bome dit wel sal doen.

Dr. Juriaanse is in 1970 op die ouderdom van 97 oorlede en die eikelanings staan vandag nog as lewende monument ter nagedagtenis aan hom. Die huis, plaas en die akkerlanings op Kralinbergh soos dit vandag bekend staan en as ’n gastehuis bedryf word, leef voort as nalatenskap van dié formidabele heer.

Meer oor die Akkerboom deur Marius Brundyn: “Die akkerboom is algemeen een van die bekendste bome in die wêreld.

Ook in Suid-Afrika word 11 plaaslike akkerbome erken as kampioen bome in die amptelike lys van 83 bome wat deur die Departement van Landbou, Bosbou en Visserye saamgestel is. Dit is nie sonder rede nie. Die akkerboom is simbolies van krag, wysheid, langlewendheid en standvastigheid. Deur die eeue word akkerbome geassosieer met koninklikheid en wysheid as gevolg van die ouderdom en grootte van hierdie bome. “The oak is a living legend representing all that is true, wholesome, stable and noble.” (Oak tree: Symbolism, Information and Planting instructions; https://urnabios.com).

Akkerbome is van die genus Quercus wat uit omtrent 800 spesies bestaan wat hoofsaaklik in die noordelike halfrond natuurlik voorkom. Die oudste en mees bekende akker spesie in Suid-Afrika is Quercus robur wat saam met die eerste Europese setlaars hier aangekom het. Die bome is saam met die wingerde aangeplant met die doel om die hout te gebruik om wynvaatjies te maak. Die kwaliteit van

die plaaslik gekweekte hout was egter nie dieselfde as die Europese hout nie. Steeds het die bome maklik geaard en gevestig geraak.

Verskeie plekke in die land is bekend vir die akkerbome wat daar groei, byvoorbeeld Stellenbosch, wat ook die Eiekestad genoem word, en Potchefstroom, waar die langste laning akkerbome geplant is. Die oudste van die akkerbome groei steeds vandag by die Vergelegen Landgoed in Somerset-Wes, waar dit meer as 300 jaar gelede geplant is. Vandag is hierdie boom ook die grootste akkerboom in Suid-Afrika.

Die kouebestandheid van hierdie bome maak dit gewilde opsies vir aanplantings, soos op die Hoëveld, waar min inheemse bome goed groei. ’n Tweede eienskap wat hierdie bome gewild maak is die besonderse kleur skouspel van die blare in herfs.

Voorheen is akkerbome aangeplant vir die voedingswaarde van die akkers.

Akkerbome is bekend daarvoor dat hulle baie stadig groei. Dus, om ’n akkerboom te plant is om ’n nalatenskap te los vir die komende geslagte, want die planter sal nie die boom in sy leeftyd tot volwassenheid sien groei nie. Vandag sien ons elke dag rondom ons die resultaat van mense uit vorige geslagte wat vooruit kon sien dat dit nodig was om bome te plant. So kan ons steeds vandag vorentoe kyk en die toekomswaarde sien van bome wat ons vandag kan plant. As ons nie in ons leeftyd bome plant nie, sal die bome nie in die toekoms daar wees nie.”

#DeurBarendSeLens Van emigreer, eende jag en OBS Jag en jagstories is so sinoniem in ons Afrikaner kultuur soos die Engelse en jag, die Hollanders en koffie winkels, die Duitsers en akkuraatheid en die Skotte en hulle koue nat weer. Maar as jy nou die oorspronklike wortels van ons nasie ken, dan gaan jy ook verstaan dat die ons iets van elkeen van hierdie nasies in ons bloed oorgehou het.

Maar weens politiek, BEE, afdankings en al daai ekonomiese vloekwoorde gebeur dit so dat baie van ons volksgenote terug na ons ou volkie se wortels toe gaan. So kry neef Franna werk as apteker in Skotland, en hy nooi sy broer, Riaan om te kom eende jag. Hulle het as kinders op ’n lemoen landgoed op die Noord Transvaalse platteland groot geword en in hulle vrye tyd duiwe met die windbuks in die lemoenboorde gaan skiet.

Nou kyk, vir die Europeërs is ’n paspoort iets wat jy kry voor jou geboorte sertifikaat uitgereik word, maar ons hier aan die suid punt van Afrika, wag tot ons amper aftree voor ons dit oorweeg om vir ’n paspoort te gaan aansoek doen. Dit was hoe neef Riaan dit toe nou getref het. Maar ek sal op ’n latere geleentheid die paspoort aansoek storie vertel, kom ons bly by die eende jag storie.

So is dit toe nou tyd om die eende te gaan soek. Tipies Skotland, is dit koud en nat en trietsig, maar Riaan, getrou aan die boere tradisie pak ’n bottel OBS in teen die koue. Franna, wat nou al die koue gewoont is, bly by tee en is van opinie dat eende jag en OBS nie in een sin genoem moet word nie.

So is die twee broers die vleilande van Skotland in op soek na wilde eende, maar niks, nie eens ’n verdwaalde eend nie. Franna het later sy tee klaar gemaak en Riaan het iewers ’n derde flessie OBS in sy baadjie sak gevind en ook leeg gemaak. Skielik vlieg daar een verdwaalde eend op. Franna besluit dat Riaan te veel OBS in het en hy sal maar die skoot waag en hy mis.... Riaan skrik so groot dat die flessie OBS laat val en hy lig sy haelgeweer en skiet sommer so uit die vuis uit, en tref die eend wat soos ’n dooie eend uit die lug val.

Franna kyk Riaan aan en sê ewe verbaas dat hy nie verstaan hoe dinge werk nie, hy wat Franna is het niks gedrink nie en hy mis

die eend maar Riaan wat drie flessies OBS sterk staan tref die eend sommer so uit die vuis. Riaan, baie ingenome met homself antwoord: “Ek het geweet as ek iewers in die middel van die bondel van daai sewe eende mik moes ek minstens een getref het.”

LJ is 26 Maart in die Ermelo MediClinic opgeneem en na die Neurologiese Intensiewesorgeenheid by die Steve Biko Hospitaal in Pretoria oorgeplaas nadat ’n aneurisme in sy brein gebars het.

Ongeveer 2 weke later, steeds in dié eenheid, het hy ’n beroerte gekry wat tot die gevolg gehad dat hy heeltemal beheer van sy ledemate asook sy spraak verloor het. Dokters was van die begin af skepties oor LJ se herstel maar hy het hard gewerk en aanhou veg om sy onafhanklikheid terug te wen. Vandag is sy linkerbeen al sterker en hy kan selfs met sy linkerhand eet en koffie drink. ’n Week na sy tuiskoms het LJ weer alle verwagtinge oorkom met ’n bietjie beweging in sy regterbeen.

Hy is steeds rolstoel gebonde en werk hard aan sy rehabilitasie. Met die hulp van sy verpleër, Inge besoek hy weekliks die fisio en spraakterapeute waarna sy hom tuis help met verdere oefeninge. LJ is ook opgewonde oor die vooruitsig om in September sy rehabilitasie in die swembad voort te sit.

“Ons is so dankbaar vir alles, en meeste van die tyd val alles net in plek nog voor ons behoorlik kan vra,” vertel LJ se pa, Leon. Hy vertel ook dat hulle oneindig dankbaar is vir elke gebed asook die bydraes wat deur soveel mense gemaak is.

#Recipe #Resep Tuisgemaakte S” G O D “CORN Bestanddele: ½ koppie geel mieliemeel (wit is ook reg, die geel gee egter ’n mooi kleur) ½ koppie meel 1 eetlepel suiker 1 teelepel droë mosterd 1 teelepel bakpoeier ½ teelepel sout ½ koppie melk 1 eier, liggies geklits 1 eetlepel gesmelte botter 6 worse (viennas, kaaswors, Russians ens) 6 sosatie stokkies Olie vir braai Metode: Meng die mieliemeel, meel, suiker, mosterd, bakpoeier en sout. Voeg die melk, eier en botter by en meng tot glad. Gooi die mengsel in ’n lang glas of plastiekhouer.

Vee die wors met handdoekpapier of ’n skoon vadoek af om seker te maak hulle is redelik droog. Plaas die sosatiestokkie in die wors en doop hulle in die beslag.

Diepbraai in olie verhit tot 375 grade tot goudbruin, sowat twee minute. Dreineer op kombuispapier en bedien warm met mosterd, soetrissiesous of sous na smaak.

If you take a land tour, you can visit other ‘off the beaten paths’ destinations like Angoon, home of the Kootznoowoo Tlingit Tribe and the where the highest density of bald eagles in the world can be found; Elfin cove, a picturesque boardwalk town known for incredible fishing, wildlife and glacier views; Pelican, where the motto in this town of 150 year-round residents is ‘Closest to Fish’; or Yakutat, where you can experience a small town loaded with things to do for the independent traveller.

MOTH Ermelo hosts district meeting The Ermelo Monte Sole MOTHS hosted a district AGM at the dugout in Jan van Riebeeck Street on Saturday 14 July. The meeting was attended by representatives of MOTH orders from Piet Retief (Bridge 14), Greylingstad (SR), Heidelberg (Suikerbosrand) and Secunda (Mkumbura).

During the meeting homage was paid to the South African soldiers who lost their lives in the battle of Dellville Wood during World War 1.

On 15 July, 1916 at two hours before dawn, 121 officers and 3153 men of the 2nd South African Infantry Brigade under the command of General Tim Lukin went forward into battle with orders to take and to hold ‘at all costs” an area known as Delville Wood.

What followed is a story of extraordinary heroism and endurance; a story of which South Africans may forever be proud. For six days and five nights the South Africans attacked, only to be met by a murderous artillery barrage with machine-gun and rifle fire from three sides. They dug in, withstood countless counter attacks by vastly superior forces and edged forward inch by inch, only to be beaten back again. At times, 400 shells landed in the wood every minute. Although the South Africans held out for six days and five nights it cost them dearly. When the Brigade was reassembled, only 770 out of the 3274 men and officers were found to have survived. Peace had been bought at a high price as 2504 had perished in the battle.

Blood Moon visible tomorrow

A spectacular full eclipse of the moon will start at 9:30PM on Friday, 27 July. The two-hour eclipse will produce a 'Blood Moon', something last seen in 2011, the likes of which will not be seen again until 2029.

South Africans will be treated to a rare astronomical spectacle, a full lunar eclipse. Depending on clear weather, South Africans should have a great view of the full moon slipping into the Earth’s shadow, an event which last happened in SA seven years ago.

It will also give South African star gazers a chance to make up for missing out on the rare super blood moon visible in North America, Hawaii, the Middle East, Russia, India, and Australia, earlier this year.

The "blood" in the name comes from the reddish-brown colour the moon takes on when Earth enters between it and the sun, cutting off the direct light that usually brightens the lunar surface to white.

The eclipse will be visible country-wide and will be easily and safely visible to the naked eye.

The full moon first begins to darken as it enters the earth’s shadow at 19:15, with totality beginning at 21:30.

The duration of total eclipse will be nearly two hours. You should also be able to spot the planets Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars.

~ A spotter pilot’s main priority is operational safety ~ Working on Fire spotter pilots are specifically trained to ensure that aerial fire fighting operations are undertaken safely and efficiently.

When wildfires threaten farms and devour thousands of hectares of plantations, aerial fire fighters are called in. Aerial firefighting has a great impact on wildland fire fighting operations. Aerial bombing does not effectively put out fires but fire fighting pilots are able to cool down the fire line, enabling ground teams to move in closer and extinguish the flames. Successful fire fighting operations require teamwork and aerial fire-fighters are integral members of that team.

Circling above the burning inferno, is

another, less visual but vitally important aerial fire fighting resource – the command and control aircraft, also referred to as the “spotter”.

20 years ago, the command and control aircraft (usually high-wing Cessna’s) were coined spotter planes, as they were essentially commissioned to fly out and “spot” the fires. Modern technology has introduced electronic fire detection cameras which largely fill the fire detection role, while the spotter’s main priority now is the safety of the other aircraft and ground resources through a command and control function.

The spotter forms part of initial attack.

The pilot is usually dispatched ahead of the

other resources. These pilots are specifically trained in advanced fire behaviour and are able to assess the fire and offer relevant real-time information to the Incident Commanders (IC) on the ground, who need the information to make informed decisions regarding tactics and resources.

Apart from air-to-ground communication, the spotter also manages air-to-air communication. They fly at a higher altitude than the other operational aircraft to maintain situational awareness and – in cooperation with the IC – direct the Hueys, with their Bambi buckets, and AT 802 fixedwing water bombers to where water is most needed.

FireFly camera systems are installed on

board the command and control aircraft, which records and streams the events to the IC and landowners in their office. This gives the ground operations immediate and accurate insight into the fire’s behaviour and the effectiveness of the aerial and ground suppression actions.

The spotter usually only stands down once all the other aircraft have been demobilised and ground teams no longer require its assistance. As a result, the spotter may circle a fire for up to four hours before it has to land and refuel. The importance of the spotter during aerial fire fighting is often overlooked, but its function is essential for the safety and efficiency of wildland fire fighting operational.

Liggie o/15A’s MPU Grootskole Kampioene Ligbron Akademie vir Tegnologie se Computer Connection o/15A rugbyspan het na afloop van die Mpumalanga Grootskole eindstryd, wat Saterdag, 21 Julie in Secunda plaasgevind het, as die Mpumalanga Grootskole Kampioene uit die stryd getree. Dus spog die Liggies nou met vier Mpumalanga Grootskole Kampioene nadat

die o/14B, tweede span en derde span ook onlangs as die Mpumalanga Grootskole B-spanne Kampioene gekroon is.

Die o/15A’s het teen Hoërskool Rob Ferreira in die eindstryd te staan gekom en het die wedstryd oortuigend met 22-7 gewen. Hulle sal eerskomende Saterdag teen Hoërskool Piet Potgieter

in Potgietersrus te staan kom tydens ‘n Virsekerbeker uitspeelwedstryd.

Die Calstar Group eerste span het teen Hoërskool Secunda in die Mpumalanga Grootskole eindstryd te staan gekom. Hulle het as Mpumalanga Grootskole naaswenners uit die stryd getree nadat hulle met 7-28 verloor het. Die Calstar Group eerste span

sal Saterdag teen Hoërskool Randburg in Randburg in hulle eerste Virsekerbeker uitspeelwedstryd te staan kom.

Die o/14A’s wat derde in die Mpumalanga Grootskole liga geëindig het sal Saterdag teen Hoërskool Dinamika in Alberton in hulle eerste Virsekerbeker uitspeelwedstryd speel.

Die Ligbron Computer Connection o/15A rugbyspan is voor Jean-Pierre Groenewald, Richardt Lemmer, Regard Jansen van Rensburg, Njabulo Maseko en Banele Mtshali. In die 2de ry sit Bonga Nkonyane, WP Bosch (afrigter), Hendrico Jansen van Rensburg, Sias Jacobs, Brendt Jansen van Rensburg, Tiaan Jacobs, Marno Botha en André Louw (afrigter).

Ligbron krieketspanne geniet toer

Die o/15A en eerste seunskrieketspanne van Ligbron Akademie vir Tegnologie het die afgelope skoolvakansie die Jaru-krieketweek wat vanaf 4 tot 7 Julie in Brits plaasgevind het, bygewoon.

Die eerste dag het die o/15’s ʼn 50 boulbeurt wedstryd teen Waterkloof se o/14A’s gespeel. Waterkloof het eerste gekolf en daarin geslaag om 293 lopies (almal uit) in die 45ste boulbeurt aan te teken. Die Liggies kon daarna net 93 lopies aanteken. Op die tweede dag het die Liggies teen Potch Volkies te staan gekom.

Ligbron het die loting gewen en besluit om eerste te boul. Die Volkies het 163 lopies in 30 boulbeurte aangeteken. Ligbron het daarna 166 lopies in 27 boulbeurte in hulle kolfbeurt behaal en die wedstryd met 6 paaltjies gewen. Sias Jacobs het 55 lopies aangeteken en Weldon Strydom 58 lopies (nie uit nie). In die tweede dag se middagwedstryd het die Liggies teen Waterkloof se o/15B’s te staan gekom. Ligbron is ingestuur om eerste te kolf en het 146 lopies aangeteken. JP Austin het 44 lopies aangeteken en Jacques van Nieuwenhuizen 41 lopies. Ligbron het die wedstryd met 2 paaltjies verloor.

Die eerste seunskrieketspan het hulle eerste wedstryd teen Hoërskool Swartskop gespeel. Ligbron het die loot gewen en besluit om eerste te boul. Swartkop het 211 lopies in 48 boulbeurte aangeteken. Mark Niebuhr was die beste bouler met 3 paaltjies vir 42 lopies in 10 boulbeurte. Ligbron kon slegs 81 lopies aanteken en het die wedstryd met 130 lopies verloor. Ligbron het in hul

tweede wedstryd oor 30 boulbeurte teen Hoërskool Bergvlam te staan gekom. Die Liggies het eerste gekolf en 110 lopies almal uit aangeteken. Bergvlam het in hulle kolfbeurt die wen lopies in die 22ste boulbeurt aangeteken met slegs 4 paaltjies plat en die wedstryd met 6 paaltjies gewen.

In die derde wedstryd oor 30 boulbeurte, het die Liggies se eerstes teen Hoërskool Hugenote te staan gekom. Ligbron het eerste gekolf en 188 lopies almal uit in die 28ste boulbeurt aangeteken. Ruben Herbst het 55 lopies van 48 balle aangeteken en Hanco Bakker 32 lopies. Hugenote het die wen lopies in die 24ste boulbeurt aangeteken sonder die verlies van enige paaltjies en die wedstryd met 10 paaltjies gewen. Die krieketspanne bedank graag hulle borge en ouers wat die toer moontlik gemaak het.

Sias Jacobs en JP Austin is na afloop van die toer gekies vir ’n toerspan wat na SriLanka sal toer.

Ligbron netbalspan eindig 18de in SA

Die o/16A netbalspan van Ligbron Akademie vir Tegnologie het die afgelope naweek vanaf Donderdag tot Sondag, 19 tot 22 Julie, deelgeneem aan die ‘SA Top Schools’ kampioenskap wat by Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen plaasgevind het.

Drie-en-twintig top netbalspanne in dié ouderdomsgroep het die toeskouers getrakteer op hoogstaande netbal. Die Liggies het teen veel groter skole 18de in Suid-Afrika geëindig. Die Liggies se uitslae is soos volg: 8 – 16 verloor teen Framesby

5 – 15 verloor teen Durbanville 9 – 15 verloor teen Eldoraigne (Gauteng) 13 – 14 verloor teen Ben Vorster (Limpopo) 21 – 7 gewen teen THS (KZN) 14 – 9 gewen teen Diamantveld 11 – 19 verloor teen Wittenberg Die span wil graag van die geleentheid gebruik om die volgende borge te bedank: Mnr. Die SA-o/19 seuns- en meisies Polocrosse-spanne het vanaf 12 tot 15 Julie teen Engeland se o/19spanne in Mooirivier, Natal meegeding. Rikus Cilliers, graad 11-leerder van EHS, is gekies om die SA Polocrosse seunspan te verteenwoordig.

Die meisiespan het al drie toetse oortuigend gewen, die seuns se wedstryde was baie kompeterend en die Engelse het die eerste twee toetse gewen. Die Suid-Afrikaners het goed teruggeveg en sodoende die derde toets 23-22 gewen.

Rico Jordan, graad 10-leerder van EHS, is aangewys as Victor Ludorum vir Noord-Oos Mpumalanga Junior o/19 visvang-liga 2017/2018. Hy is ook tydens die prysuitdeling wat 21 Julie plaasgevind het as sportman van die jaar aangewys.

Marelize wen “Mystery IPS” ’n Gholfwedstryd ten bate van Ermelo Gholfklub se Grosligaspan het Saterdag op die Ermelo Gholfbaan plaasgevind. Die wedstryd is deur Nashua Ermelo geborg en is in ’n “Mystery IPS” formaat gespeel.

Marelize Potgieter, op 22 punte, is as die wenner aangewys ná ’n uittel met Thamie Seilbea in die 2de plek, ook op 22 punte.

Marelize was ook naaste aan die pen op die

9de putjie.

Werner Engelbrecht en David Mashinini, albei op 21 punte is onderskeidelik 3de en 4de geplaas ná ’n uittel. Piet Swanepoel was 5de op 20 punte.

Marinus Snyman het die prys ontvang vir die langste dryf op die 1ste bof asook ’n prys vir naaste aan die pen op die 18de putjie.

INTERMITTENT FASTING – MYTH OR MAGIC?

Speaking of fasting – An overweight Irishman was put on a fasting diet by his doctor: “I want you to eat regularly for 2 days, then skip a day, and repeat the procedure for 2 weeks. The pure mention of the term Intermittent Fasting (IF) causes raised eyebrows, for it`s so contrary to everything we`ve been told to believe: “Make sure you start off with a healthy breakfast, so you can get that metabolism firing!” “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a princess and dinner like a pauper…” “Make sure you eat six small meals throughout the day so your metabolism stays firing at maximum capacity all day long…” So, eat breakfast to lose weight and obtain optimal health. Case closed… right?

I’m not a wellness specialist or a dietician, but over the past few years I have worked with hundreds of women, shared their fitness quests and challenges, and together we are constantly searching for ways to conquer their weight-loss goals. That`s how Intermittent Fasting recently popped up in a few conversations, and I decided to

investigate…

Technically, IF has been around since Caveman Chris didn’t leave his dwelling to pick berries for dinner because he was afraid of the lightning gods. It simply means not eating for short stretches of time, typically somewhere between 15 to 24 hours. The irony is that we all practice intermittent fasting on a 12/12 basis already. We eat between 8am to 8pm, and then we don`t eat because we spend much of that time sleeping. It may seem a bit technical, but you too have probably practiced IF before without even realizing it – We`ve all had days where we wake up and say: “Oh crap I’m late!” or wake up and realize “I’m just not hungry at all…”

Considered one of the top eating trends of 2018, intermittent fasting is about strategy, not starvation. “It’s meant to reset your body in different ways, with fitness and nutrition changes as a result”, says Tanya Zuckerbrot, author and founder of “The Fast Factor Diet.” But, to fully understand the science behind Intermittent Fasting, we need to know the difference between the fasted state and the fed state. When you eat every two to six hours, you’re in a fed state, which is when your body is busy digesting your meals. The reason why IF can provide certain benefits for weight loss is because it allows your body to enter the fasted state, which is when your body’s fat burning can really accelerate. The way wellness expert Gin Stephens describes the process in her book “Delay, don`t deny,” makes beautiful intuitive sense: “Because it has all of this readily-available, easy to burn energy, your body will choose to use that as energy rather than the fat you have stored. During the fasted state your body is more likely to pull from the fat stored in your body as it’s the only energy source available.”

So, while working out in the morning on an empty stomach is hugely counteractive to everything we have been taught, it does makes sense that your body would burn stored fat as fuel, for then your glycogen stores are empty.

Intermittent Fasting can be practiced in a few ways, but the most popular pattern is the 16/8 protocol, sometimes called the “lean gains” method that’s used specifically to target body fat and improve lean muscle

mass. It comes down to this: Fasting for 16 hours and then eating within a specific 8-hour window, which mostly implies eating between 11 to 7 pm, essentially skipping breakfast and not eating anything again until 11am or noon, not even snacks. You CAN drink water, black coffee (without sweetener or sugar) and green tea. However, timing isn’t the only important factor – the quality of what you eat has a huge effect.

I think one of the best ways to explain this is using the example of the annual spiritual fasting of the Muslims. Every year I sadly bid my Muslim Indian fitness friends temporarily goodbye for their month of Ramadan - You'd think fasting for 30 days would put the "slim" back in Muslim.

Wrong. Why? Well, firstly we should keep in mind that their motive is a religious one and that it’s not practiced for slimming purposes. If you’re swinging between long hours of consuming nothing and then filling up on samosas, pastries and big stews, the body’s being overloaded with sugar and fat – and it’ll cling onto it for fear that no more food is coming. So, don`t delude yourself into thinking that if you skip breakfast and eat 4000 kilojoules of chocolates for lunch and dinner that you will lose weight.

Yes, the initial transition from EATING ALL THE TIME to Intermittent Fasting MIGHT be a bit of a jolt to your system – however, the body quickly adapts and learns to function just as well only eating a few times a day. These are a few questions I have been asked by people trying IF for the first time: “Why do I feel grouchy and lethargic when I skip breakfast?” Health experts explain that the grumpiness is a result of past eating habits and that the brain simply needs to be retrained. “Can I burn muscle while IF?” You`re damn right you can!

“Where will I get my energy for my workouts?” When you train in a fasted state, your body gets better at burning fat for energy! “How much should I eat while Intermittent Fasting?” Eat for your goals. If your goal is weight loss, you still need to consume fewer kilojoules than you

burn.

What are the benefits of IF? Improved digestion, fat loss, glowing skin, energy, increased human growth hormone, lowered insulin levels, mental clarity, reduced inflammation and much more. When should you NOT consider practicing IF? If you are pregnant, suffer from diabetes, have a low BMI, struggle with sleep disorders or have a history of eating disorders.

Intermittent Fasting is not a diet, it’s a lifestyle. And, it’s not a magic pill, it’s just another tool in your health toolbox. I have no idea if IF will work for you. In the end the best eating plan is the one that doesn’t feel like you’re on a diet. Just remember, regardless of WHEN you eat, you are what you eat – so never be fast, cheap, easy or fake. And in the words of American bestselling author Mike Pollan: “Came from a plant, eat it. Was made IN a plant – don`t.”

EDPC shoots for the stars

~ International shooting event comes to Ermelo ~ provide shooters with varying and interesting challenges but with the utmost importance placed on safety. The IDPA Africa Championship is however only open to handgun shooters. EDPC was also the very first South African Pistol Club to be registered on the IDPA website and the Africa Championship is an approved and recognized event on the IDPA calendar.

“This is indeed a great honour for us at EDPC and we look forward to the opportunity of seeing some of the best local and international shooters showing off their skills at our range. It is of course a massive task to organize and stage an event of this magnitude but our

team gained invaluable experience at the SA’s last year and we are ready and willing. The confidence placed in us and our facility is something not only the club, but the whole town of Ermelo can be extremely proud of,” said Vivian Whatley, Chief organizer and Match Director of South African Defensive Pistol Association (SADPA). Vivian was recently appointed as the new IPOC (International Point of Contact) for SADPA. This position is a stepping stone to communicating with IDPA headquarters in the USA and has placed Ermelo firmly on the map as a venue of choice for hosting events of this magnitude.

The 2018 International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) Africa Championship will take place at the Vlakfontein Shooting Range from 9 to 12 August 2018. Not only has the event attracted 240 of the best shooters in South Africa but it has also received entries from top shooters from countries such as Kenya.
