2025 impact report

Page 1

On February 26, 2023, we dedicated the newly built and renovated Evelyn Rubenstein JCC. The Samuels Family Community Pavilion hosted the packed event, where community leaders shared memories and wishes for our success. These wishes have materialized, as we now create J memories for over 10,000 members and continue to fulfill our mission to develop and strengthen Jewish identity, foster Jewish values, and enrich the Jewish community and the greater community. The J has numerous partners.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, City of Houston, United Way and several Jewish organizations and congregations support our work through philanthropy, assistance navigating city protocols, collaboration on program development and invitations to the broader community to engage with the J.

The board of trustees and senior staff strategically guide the J at an organizational level—the big-picture priorities. The decision to rebuild the Milton-Levit Family Campus, the execution of our $50M capital campaign and the design of the new space were all initiatives driven by a partnership with current and past board leadership and senior staff.

As the new building opened, the priorities were to offer destination-worthy programs, welcome a larger and more diverse membership, serve as a community connector and ensure financial strength. This impact report highlights tremendous progress. Currently, the focus is on drivers of organizational success: retain staff, engage lay leaders, serve our members and continue to enhance facilities. Below are highlights of our progress.

Retain Staff

• Senior staff address opportunities for enhancing the work culture using feedback from staff surveys and workshops.

• HR professionals, who are also J members, analyze competitive compensation and benefits data and guide the development of our philosophy as an employer.

• The board works to provide the budget to support these initiatives.

Engage Lay Leaders

• The board chair and CEO work to leverage the skills and interests of 40 board members to support strategic initiatives.

• Board member feedback fuels efforts to foster board conversations and relationship building.

• Volunteers lead task forces with input from other members and key staff.

Serve Members

• Members continue to belong, with a 97% retention rate.

• Members’ feedback informs us of our customer service practices and improvements.

Enhance Facilities

• A board task force, with input from staff, facility users and outside professionals, is working on long-term plans for our facilities that were not a part of the capital project: Bertha Alyce School, Merfish Teen Center, West Houston campus, and the Mystical Garden in front of the Joe Weingarten Building.

The last two years have been busy! It has been an honor to serve as president of the board of directors and collaborate with lay and staff leaders to steer the organization in serving our constituents and fulfilling our mission.

Cheers, Debbie

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Stronger Together

At the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC, health and fitness extend beyond the exercise. We foster community, connection and new paths to wellness. With a 10% increase in membership since May 2024, our growth reflects the trust and enthusiasm of our members and the diverse, quality offerings available.

Health and fitness members enjoy a multitude of benefits and access to our state-of-theart fitness center, group exercise classes, personal training and more. Whether in the pool, on the court, on the mat or playing a fast-paced game, our programs encourage skill-building, teamwork and lifelong wellness. From the fitness-focused to those looking for rest and relaxation, the J is the destination for all levels of activity and self-care.

Our aquatics program offers opportunities for swimmers of all ages to build confidence and safety in the water through lessons, swim tests and training. Pickleball is a highly popular, social sport, bringing players together for games and lessons. Tennis remains a core component of the J community, with leagues, classes and open play at our premier indoor and outdoor facilities. As the longest-standing league of its kind in Houston, our men’s basketball league gives members a chance to bring their energy to the court through friendly competition and camaraderie. With one of the best training facilities in the country, the Houston Gymnastics Center at the J continues to train and inspire young athletes, with expert coaching helping gymnasts develop strength, discipline and a passion for the sport.

“I have been impressed with the group fitness offerings and quality of instructors. It makes it so easy to stay active when you can have a lot of fun, try new activities and mix up your routine. There is something for everyone and every mood!” - Anna V.

ADULTS 60+ AND LIFELONG LEARNING

Fit and Fun at Every Age

Life gets better with age! Our adults 60+ programs continue to thrive, creating meaningful connections through special events, learning and enrichment. From social gatherings to fitness, wellness and more, the J offers diverse programs for older adults to stay energized, active and engaged.

Over the last year, the Senior Adult Mitzvah Fund experienced a 50% increase in support, enabling the expansion of activities and educational opportunities. Our highly popular senior lunch group

meets three times per week to enjoy a nice meal, company and conversation. The senior lounge is a regular hotspot for hang outs and friendly Mah Jongg or canasta games. This vibrant community also enjoys bus trips around town, lectures on a broad range of topics from healthy aging to online safety, Jewish learning opportunities and more. Plus, through the J Ride program, funded in part by the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, seniors have safe, reliable transportation to medical appointments, personal care visits and grocery stores too!

The J’s senior bus day trips are thoughtfully curated with destinations that truly resonate with our community. One particularly memorable outing took us on a nostalgic journey through Houston’s historic Riverside Terrace neighborhood—a local gem steeped in rich history.

In a moment straight out of a movie, two strangers met on that trip… and a year later, they are still together.

FAMILIES, CHILDREN AND TEENS Connecting Families and Shaping Future Leaders

L’dor vador, from generation to generation.

At the J, generations of families enjoy enriching experiences that foster growth, creativity and connection. From music and movement to early childhood education, summer camp, leadership programs, philanthropy and more, we serve as a hub for young learners, athletes and leaders, educating and empowering youth to lead purposeful, meaningful lives.

Early childhood education remains an important element of our generational impact. The Bertha Alyce Early Childhood School and Ellen Boniuk Early Childhood School provide an early childhood experience like no other— one where we live our Jewish values daily in a vibrant, engaging, safe and supportive environment reflecting our commitment to nurturing every child’s individual growth.

The Sherry Merfish Infant Care Program remains a trusted, caring and stimulating environment for infants beginning at 6 weeks of age. Additionally, the Karol Musher

STARS Early Childhood Intervention Program saw an increase in enrollment over the last year, demonstrating our commitment to individualized learning. From Snacks in the Sukkah, all-school Shabbats and Passover experiences to Kindergarten Readiness Night and developmental screenings through the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, each day at our schools is a shehecheyanu moment filled with endless possibilities for learning and joy.

KidZone continues to provide a safe, enriching after-school experience for children in grades K-5, with a variety of activities from art and gymnastics to culinary classes and Jewish holiday celebrations.

Designed to nurture confidence, cultivate friendships, inspire growth and ignite a sense of belonging, our family engagement

“J Camps is the highlight of my summer! I get to try new activities like robotics and cooking while spending time with my best friends.” - Daniel R., Grade 4

programs bring families together to celebrate Jewish holidays and traditions, create memories and build connection in an inclusive, welcoming environment. Popular events such as Hanukkah at the J, the Purim Carnival and PJ Library story time remain family favorites. The beloved indoor playscape continues to provide a safe, interactive environment for young children to explore, develop critical motor skills and have fun.

Whether through J Camps, enrichment classes or leadership initiatives, children and teens engage in impactful experiences that shape their futures. This year, 26 talented kids, ages 8 to 18, showcased their skills at the Junior Theater Festival in Sacramento, California, earning an award for Excellence in Music. We also empower high school students through the J-Teen Philanthropy Initiative and leadership programs like J Teen Ambassadors, where they address important community needs, develop valuable skills and take on meaningful roles.

1,542 campers experienced creativity, exploration and fun at J Camps.

1,420+ visits by J member families and guests to the indoor playscape.

90+ high school students engaged in leadership development initiatives.

463 bus rides transported 106 children from 8 local elementary schools to KidZone.

$495,000 raised through the 2025 Children’s Scholarship Ball.

CULTIVATING COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION

Through Purpose and Heart

When you step into the J, you find remarkable people, dedicated volunteers and a wide array of programs and initiatives that enrich the lives of our community. Since 1936, the J has been a place where families and individuals come together for connection, quality experiences and a sense of belonging. With support from the Houston Jewish Community Foundation and the Radoff Family, the J launched a children’s culinary program in our culinary studio, emphasizing hands-on learning and healthy eating for local youth in the Gulfton and Sharpstown areas through the Connect Community organization. This unique opportunity empowered young chefs by building their skills and confidence in the kitchen, allowing them to contribute to their family meals with fresh, homecooked meals.

The J cultivates community beyond our walls as well. Meals on Wheels at the J represents more than just a meal—it’s a moment of care, connection and reassurance that no senior goes hungry or feels alone. Now servicing 13 zip codes in the Houston area, this program

has experienced 15.8% growth since 2019, serving more than 127,000 nutritious meals to 691 individuals over the last year.

The J is proud of its longstanding partnership as a sponsoring agency for three critical AmeriCorps programs that are provided to and for older adults throughout Southeast Texas: Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions and Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

Over the last year, RSVP engaged over 650 volunteers who contributed 71,000 hours of service across 18 counties. These efforts focused on enhancing independent living for older adults, providing public disaster preparedness education and offering programs to prevent Medicare fraud and opioid abuse. Through Senior Companions and Foster Grandparents, 80 volunteers provided over 69,000 hours of service, mentoring at-risk youth and providing vital companionship and respite care for isolated seniors and their caregivers.

I am grateful to receive the meals and so thankful to the people who spend time and money delivering the meals for my blessings. Most of them are friends now. Thank God for the program!

- Barbara B., Meals on Wheels client We deliver more than a meal— we deliver the opportunity to interact, share a story, ask a question, express a concern and point them toward resources that can benefit them. We bring the reassurance that someone cares and pays attention. That’s why I’m a Meals on Wheels volunteer.

“Belonging is a feeling that goes beyond words... Maccabi allowed me to make amazing friends, create unforgettable memories and connect to Judaism. Finding where you belong can take some effort, but the reward of joy and acceptance is worth it.”
