Eritrea and it’s history?

Eritrea is an East African country in the Horn of Africa. The coast of Eritrea lies along the Red Sea, while Djibouti, Sudan, and Ethiopia surround the country's other borders.

The Italians created the colony of Eritrea in the 19th century around Asmara, and named it with its current name. After World War II Eritrea was annexed to Ethiopia. In 1991 the communist Ethiopian government was toppled by the Eritreans and they earned their independence.

The boundaries of the present-day Eritrea nation state were established during the Scramble for Africa. In 1869 or ’70, the then ruling Sultan of Raheita sold lands surrounding the Bay of Assab to the Rubattino Shipping Company. The area served as a coaling station along the shipping lanes introduced by the recently completed Suez Canal. It had long been part of the Ottoman Habesh Eyalet centered in Egypt. The first Italian settlers arrived in 1880.

Later, as the Egyptians retreated out of Sudan during the Mahdist rebellion, the British brokered an agreement whereby the Egyptians could retreat through Ethiopia, and in exchange they would allow the Emperor to occupy those lowland districts that he had disputed with the Turks and Egyptians. Emperor Yohannes IV believed this included Massawa, but instead, the port was handed by the Egyptians and the British to the Italians, who united it with the already colonised port of Asseb to form a coastal Italian possession. The Italians took advantage of disorder in northern Ethiopia following the death of Emperor Yohannes IV in 1889 to occupy the highlands and established their new colony, henceforth known as Eritrea, and received recognition from Menelik II, Ethiopia's new Emperor.

Eritrean Forces Before independence?

The ELF The Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) informally known as Jebha, was the main independence movement in Eritrea which sought Eritrea's independence from Ethiopia during the 1960s and the early 1970s.

In the late 1950s, an unorganized political movement seeking independence was secretly active as small cells. And in July 1960, the ELF was openly established in Cairo by Idris Muhammad Adam and other Eritrean intellectuals and students. In 1961 Hamid Idris Awate formed the armed wing of the ELF and declared the armed struggle for independence. Led by Awate, the ELF came into violent conflict with the government on September 1, 1961, using guerrilla war tactics to continue the struggle. Though the movement posed great problems for the Ethiopian government and army, it was also facing internal political conflicts in the very late 1960s. In the 1970s, a group of its members split the movement and formed the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, a more left-wing rebel movement. By the 1980s, the People's Liberation Front had replaced the original Eritrean Liberation Front as the main rebel group. Following the expulsion of the ELF from Eritrean land, the organization split into three groups: the Eritrean liberation front-Revolutionary Council, led

by Ahmed Nasser, the Eritrean liberation front-Central Leadership, which eventually united in 1987 with the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, and the remaining faction led by Abdalla Idriss retained the original name. When Eritrea did gain independence in the early 1990s, the People's Liberation Front changed into the People's Front for Democracy and Justice with the addition of former ELF members while the balance became a small rebel group in the nether reaches of Sudan.

The EPLF The Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF), informally known as Shabia, was an armed Marxist–Leninist organization that fought for the independence of Eritrea from Ethiopia. It emerged in 1970 as a far-left to left-wing nationalist group that split from the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF). After achieving Eritrean independence in 1991, it transformed into the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), which serves as Eritrea's legal political party.

A faction of the ELF broke away in 1970 to form the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front. The EPLF managed to secure control of much of the Eritrean countryside and build effective administrations in the areas it controlled. Fighting that broke out between the EPLF, ELF, and other Eritrean rebel groups in 1981 prevented further military gains, but the EPLF subsequently emerged as the principal Eritrean guerrilla group.

As Soviet support of Ethiopia’s socialist government collapsed in the late 1980s, the EPLF formed an alliance with guerrilla groups in Tigray province and other parts of Ethiopia, and, when these groups overthrew the central government and captured the Ethiopian capital in May 1991, the EPLF formed a separate provisional government for Eritrea. After the holding of a United Nations-supervised referendum on independence there in April 1993, the EPLF declared the new nation of Eritrea the following month. In February 1994 the EPLF renamed itself the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice as part of its transformation into Eritrea’s ruling political party.

After Independence what went wrong?

Mai Habar Protest In 1994, in Mai Habar, veterans who were disabled as a consequence of war injuries sustained participating in the struggle for liberation were gathered in protest because their pleas for decent treatment and integration into the civil community were not being heard. They started making their way towards Asmara and refused to stay in the camp within which they had been living, segregated from the rest of society.

When attempts to disperse them failed, owing to the veterans’ insistence on being given real solutions to their problems, the government sent soldiers who opened fire on the unarmed disabled veterans. Immediately after the war of liberation, whilst reverence for those who had risked life and limb for independence was still high, an event such as this would have caused uproar in the population.

However, Isaias Afwerki’s newly formed government manipulated the way the news broke by presenting the massacre in the government run newspaper “Hadas Ertra” essentially as a small altercation which, due to misunderstanding, led to a few deaths. It would be years before the true details of the massacre emerged, by which time Isaias Afwerki’s oppressive and authoritarian intent was obvious for all to see.

G15 In May 2001, a group of 15 senior officials of the ruling party People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), now referred to as the G-15 or Group of 15, met and signed an open letter to President Isaias Afwerki urging him to implement the constitution and to hold open elections. The letter described and made proposals for solving what it called the “crisis of Eritrea”, making “a call for correction, a call for peaceful and democratic dialogue, a call for strengthening and consolidation, a call for unity, a call for the rule of law and for justice, through peaceful and legal ways and means”. The letter contended that the President and the PFDJ were obligated by the Constitution to call internal party meetings, follow correct parliamentary and government procedures and implement a number of promises the party had made, particularly in regard to judicial reform. The Secretary General of PFDJ accused the G15 of attempting to destabilize the country.

On 18 September 2001, security agents moved to arrest 11 of the G-15 and the journalists that reported on their activities (four of the G-15 were out of the country at the time and have remained in exile since).

Other individuals who were assumed to be working with them were arrested in the subsequent months. All of the G-15 were members of the central committee of the PFDJ and had been popular military and/ or political leaders during the liberation struggle (from 1961-1991). 18 September 2001 also marks the day that the government summarily banned all privately-owned media outlets in Eritrea. Since their arrest, the government have failed to formally acknowledge their detention or disclose information about the fate or whereabouts of the G-15 members or the journalists who wrote about their letter. The government refuses to acknowledge their existence and will not answer any questions about the status of the G-15 or journalists who were arrested at that time. There have been unverified reports that some of these individuals are alive and still in prison, but none of them has been seen or heard from since their arrests and have not been granted access to a lawyer. Any members of the G-15 and any journalists who wrote about their letter who remain in detention are prisoners of conscience and must be immediately and unconditionally released.

The Current Economic problems in Eritrea?

The People's Front for Democracy and Justice is the founding, ruling, and sole legal political party of the State of Eritrea. The successor to the left-wing nationalist Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF), the PFDJ. The leader of the PFDJ party and current President of Eritrea is Isaias Afwerki.

The PFDJ claims to be a big tent political party but a Big tent or catchall party is used in reference to a political party's policy of permitting or encouraging a broad spectrum of views among its members. This is in contrast to other parties that defend a determined ideology and seek voters who adhere to that ideology and convince people towards it.

Eritrea has a command economy under the control of the sole political party, the People's Front for Democracy and Justice Which is crumbling the Eritrean economy.

Eritrea has the second-worst business freedom score of any country and failed to make any progress during the year. Because few sizable private businesses exist, employment opportunities are limited.

Reliable economic and labor statistics are difficult or impossible to find.

Monetary stability is weak, and subsidies and price controls continue to be used widely in the command economy.

Eritrea has one preferential trade agreement in force. The country’s most recent publicly available average tariff rate is 5.4 percent, but layers of nontariff barriers severely hamper trade flows. Eritrea is not a member of the World Trade Organization. Foreign investment in several sectors is restricted, and state-owned enterprises distort markets. The financial system remains very underdeveloped, and there are no effective capital markets.

How We Are Going To Take Over?

The Eritrean National Army is a free officers movement within the Eritrean Millitary and Intelligence Agency we are working on a systematic transition of government to topple the current dictatorship.

We believe the only way on making changes in are nation is to do a military coup and install democracy.

Other major plans cannot be said but ENA as a whole is working hard outside and within Eritrea The Unity Plan The Eritrean National Army Has members all over Eritrea we also know there is many other rebel groups scattered across Eritrea and also on borders with Sudan. we are working on building a alliance or merging with all Eritrean rebel groups to maximise the power to bring democracy to the country. there is a lot of Eritreans living in kassala Sudan and we are going to try work with are people there and see how we can help eachother.

What Are Plans & Aims Are? 1.

After power has been sized by the Eritrean National Army the country would be run by a transitional government and parliament for 2 years with elected representatives from all over the country having power to lead the transitional governments parliament.

During the 2 year transitional period the government will be looking for foreign investors and working on building infrastructure and industrial sectors within the country to develop the countries economy.

3.

We would also be investing government funds into a Social Safety Net which offers all Eritreans free healthcare and education. Also the opening of public housing and the development of all the countries sectors including Electricity, Water, Internet, Education, Health, Public Transport, Leisure and Tourism.

4.

Political prisoners will be freed and freedom of press will be granted to everyone. The creation of political parties would be allowed and acknowledged in the upcoming Eritrean elections.

After the 2 year transitional term the government would be run by the 1997 constitution which brings full power to the people of Eritrea and brings the nation to democratic elections and civilian rule.
