INTERIOR DESIGN PORTFOLIO

Ideology

I believe that great design is about stories. A beautiful space means nothing without the story behind it. The story of a design should be woven from the people that inhabit the space. I strive to tell a story, create meaningful interaction, and a little bit of comfort in each space that I design. Our environment should enhance our lives and that is what I plan to do for each person who visits a space I design.

Bull St Student Housing

Located in midtown Savannah, Bull St is an apartment-style residence hall for upperclassmen. Currently under construction, this fully furnished residence features in unit laundry and kitchen, an on-site pool, and multiple lounge and recreation spaces throughout the building.

First floor entry and lounge

The entry of the building includes a security desk, two residence life offices, lounge seating on the main level and an additional lounge on the upper level that gives direct access to the pool and the residential hallways.

Keeping in line with SCAD’s creative vision, the design of this student housing project features whimsical notes and bold colors.

Wood paneling in the lounge space adds warmth and an inviting atmosphere upon entering the building.

We worked closely with the architect of record to design the details and finishes for this project.

All of the furniture and accessories are OFOI and will be project managed directly through our office.

River - Student Housing

Nestled in the west end of downtown with splendid views of the Savannah River and the historic district, River is a suite-style residence hall for continuing students. This fully furnished residence features 24-hour on-site security and support from SCADhome staff.

Cargo, dining hall

Cargo, the dining hall, located on the main level of this 17 story building is the heart of student acitivity. Featuring a variety of foodhall-style dining concepts with wide-ranging menus.

The design features colorful and bold finishes and artwork in an industrial building design.

Making a statement

River has a student lounge on each residential floor that faces the river, featuring panoramic views.

We used colorful, bold furniture and fabric selections in all of the student lounges to bring a vibrance and energy to the space.

We worked closely with the furniture manufacturers to customize each piece of furniture in the building. All of the furniture orders and installation fell under my scope of work.

Student work spaces

The student lounge spaces have a variety of different furniture options including lounge, work spaces, and community spaces.

Room features include:

Suites with two double-occupancy rooms for four students.

Community cabinets with sink.

Living room with couch, side chairs, coffee table, and entertainment stand for flat-screen TV.

Separate shower, toilet, and sink facilities in each suite.

Extra-long, twin-size beds.

Desk, chair, and nightstand for each resident.

Wardrobe with drawers for each resident.

Financial Firm

MKDA designed a bright and whimsical new space for this boutique, Greenwich-based investment firm. This firm primarily invests in innovative start-ups from e-commerce companies to food and beverage and apparel brands. As a result, instead of devising a more traditional, corporate design concept, the team infused the space with color and fun patterns to create a dynamic work environment that is representative of the creative brands in their portfolio.

Key Plan

Programing for employee wellbeing

During the planning phase, we established a balanced program of private offices, open workstations, and collaboration areas. Focusing on the importance of employee wellbeing, the mix of private and public areas is crucial to maintaining healthy noise levels within the space while also mitigating distracting sounds.

Biophilic Design Promotes Employee Wellbeing

We capitalized on biophilic design principles and the firm’s signature color, green, to further our emphasis on a mission-driven, humancentric environment. The team incorporated a feature moss wall in the shape and shade of the firm’s logo, which improves indoor air quality and absorbs ambient noise

A unique way in which we incorporated the company color of green was to use their color as the grout color in the pantry.

Geometric Patterns and Colors

A selection of geometric patterned wallpapers were chosen for the phone and conference rooms to bring elements of fun and spontaneity to these areas.

The firm’s color was also heavily featured throughout the workplace, using a number of green finishes to add pops of color and personality to the space.

Geometric patterned wallpapers were chosen for the conference rooms to bring elements of fun and spontaneity to the space.

This pattern was achieved through the organization of felt triangles, adding both texture and acoustic value.

Wheelhouse

Wheelhouse, a unique entertainment, investment, and media platform, expanded its national footprint to the newly renovated waterfront campus, The Village, in Stamford’s South End. In addition to catering to its employees, the space needed to establish an impressive, stimulating backdrop for attracting new talent and investors. Matching its diverse clientele and inventive spirit, the highly amenitized building and workplace was specifically designed to serve the creative, entrepreneurial community, inspiring its users with a number of experiential and collaborative areas.

Communal Environment

Promotes Collaboration and Innovation

The extensive front of house area provides users with a number of services, functioning as a reception, cafe, and touchdown space. Here, employees and clients can collaborate and congregate together in comfort, presenting them with an array of flexible seating options from lounge chairs to barstools and booths.

Bringing Ideas to Life

3D model created in Google SketchUp to help the client visualize the final design.

Mixing bold pattern and pops of color to juxtapose the industrial nature of the building.

Building on the workplace’s industrial charm, MKDA incorporated a mix of neutrals and colors to highlight the exposed brick and refinished concrete floors.

Recessed linear lighting functions as a wayfinding tool and complements the black ceiling and mullion office fronts, accentuating the space’s architectural details.

Design Statement

This pattern is based on my restaurant with a fusion of the dishes of a Thai and Mexican chef meant to celebrate the bridging and melding of cultures. Both cultures are very vibrant and lively and I wanted my graphics to embody the spirit of those cultures mixed with the ethos of my restaurant, “sitting around a bond re with friends.”
