a letter from the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR For almost 50 years, Maricopa Skill Center has represented excellence in trade and vocational training by delivering an educational product that serves a population often overlooked by traditional schools. The MSC mission is an important one – we have a responsibility to help students obtain job skills that will ultimately lead to economic self-sufficiency. Our day-to-day operations are all about providing the very best environment for our students to achieve what we set forth in our mission. MSC’s three operational units work in concert toward our mission, ensuring every student has the best possible opportunity to become his or her personal best and contribute as a valued member of the workforce.

In our Instructional Unit, we continue to transform how to best execute our mission as the concept of a modern workplace constantly changes. We do this by developing a curriculum based entirely on the continuously communicated needs of local and national businesses.

Our recent Developing a Curriculum (DACUM) training has laid the foundation for our curricular model. We bring together exemplary industry employees and business owners to evaluate our curriculum and provide feedback for what our students should be learning to be the best candidate for a job. Perpetually continuing this process is the key to achieving our mission.

The Business & Student Services Unit continues to enhance their commitment to our mission by providing easy access to the educational services at MSC. Their dedication to customer service, use of new technologies, and a strong focus on process makes them a unit with a passion for student welfare.

During the 2004 General Bond Drive, MSC was awarded $20 million to accommodate new programs, address program growth, enhance campus security, and upgrade instructional and administrative infrastructure technologies. MSC’s Administration Unit is focused on bringing this plan to reality. Information Technology and Maintenance & Operations Departments play major roles in seeing that the remodeling and new construction of MSC continues to deliver the best educational environment available. They will truly execute MSC’s long-term vision.

Paying for your education is often the most challenging part of starting your training, and that is why MSC’s Financial Aid Office provides the resources and assistance you need to obtain funding. Federal Financial Aid provides grants and loans, and MSC can determine your eligibility once you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). MSC’s Business Office will help verify your educational costs and the method in which they will be paid. Visit the Business Office to sign your required funding awareness form before starting class. ADMISSIONS & RECORDS The role of MSCÕ s Admissions and Records Department (A&R) is to serve both prospective and current students in applying and attending training programs at the Maricopa Skill Center. The A&R Department: • Processes submitted Student Information Forms • Admits students to programs • Enrolls students in classes • Provides enrollment verification • Supplies official transcripts upon request A&R also works with funding agencies to arrange student enrollment and facilitate agency funding agreements.

STUDENT IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS MSC assigns a Maricopa Enterprise ID (MEID) to each student who submits a Student Information Form. A valid Social Security Number (SSN) must be on file for reporting information pertaining to Federal or State tax credits and to gain access to Maricopa County Community College DistrictÕ s secure online self-service resources. Applicants for Federal Financial Aid and Veterans Administration benefits must provide both their SSN and date of birth.

Your SSN will not be used as your primary student identification number and will be kept confidential. By providing an SSN we can ensure your educational records are complete and correct and provide you with the fullest service.

IDENTIFICATION CARDS On the first day of class, students will be issued an identification card from the Admissions and Records Office. Students must wear the ID card each day during attendance in their programs.

ENROLLMENT VERIFICATION There is no charge for this service. To obtain Enrollment Verification submit the completed enrollment verification form in person to: Office of Admissions & Records Maricopa Skill Center 1245 E. Buckeye Road Phoenix, AZ 85034

VETERANS BENEFITS Veterans Administration (VA) benefits are coordinated through the Student Services Office. Students receiving VA benefits are subject to VA benefits regulations. Attendance rules governing students receiving Federal Financial Aid also apply. Under these rules, attendance and Minimum Progress Rate (MPR) are monitored, and students not maintaining acceptable rates will be placed on probation or suspension.

ACCREDITATION The Maricopa Skill Center is a division of GateWay Community College, which is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and recognized by the Department of Education.

BUS TRANSPORTATION Discounted rate Valley Metro Bus cards are available for students who meet the defined need-based criteria. The reduced rate is $25.00. Criteria and applications are available from the Student Services Office.

INSURANCE Accident insurance is provided to all Maricopa Skill Center students under a blanket Maricopa Community Colleges policy. The insurance covers injuries students receive during class. Details of the coverage are available to students at registration.

Students may purchase supplementary accident and medical insurance. Information and enrollment forms are available in the Student Services Office.

TRANSFERRABLE CREDITS Several programs have articulation agreements with sister community colleges, and new agreements are added each year. Check with the appropriate Program Manager for the latest information on which certificates may be used for transferable credit to Maricopa Community Colleges. No fees are assessed for credits granted through articulation.

TUITION & FEES TUITION Students pay a flat rate of $4.60 per clock hour. Nursing students pay $5.60 per clock hour. Each certificate listing in this catalog provides detailed information on the average time it takes to complete a certificate, the average tuition cost, and associated lab and book fees. Tuition rates and/or fees are subject to change without notice.

Tuition increases are applicable to all current and incoming students and effective on the date of the rate change. Tuition and fees apply from July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010.

There are a few exceptions to this policy. Please contact Student Services for more information.

LAB & BOOK FEES Lab fees reflect the school’s costs in providing necessary consumable training materials for students. Book fees reflect the cost of books at time of purchase and are subject to change without notice. Fees are listed with each certificate in this catalog.

REGISTRATION FEES A non-refundable Registration Fee of $15 per term of attendance is collected from all incoming students.

TRANSCRIPT FEES There is a $5 fee for copies of student transcripts.

ADDITIONAL COSTS

Some programs require students to purchase clothing, special equipment, and/or take licensing/certification tests. Specific information is available in Student Services.

LUNCH FEES The Maricopa Skill Center Cafeteria offers a daily lunch special, which is an additional cost not included in MSC tuition payment. Prices are subject to change. A la carte items are also available.

FINANCIAL AID MSC Financial Aid Office is available to assist students seeking federal financial assistance to cover the cost of their education.

APPLYING FOR FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID To be considered for Federal Financial Aid such as grants and loans, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is a free application and the student should never have to pay to apply. If you are on a website that is asking for payment, check the website and be sure you are at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Follow these three steps to begin the application process: 1. Apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) at www.pin.ed.gov 2. Fill out the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov 3. Enter our school code, E00701 For additional assistance filling out the FAFSA, Maricopa Skill Center hosts free Financial Aid Workshops. Call 602.238.4398 for more information.

TYPES OF FEDERAL AID GRANTS MSC administers the following types of Federal Grant assistance: • • •

Federal Pell Grants Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (LEAP)

Grants are monies that are provided to students to help cover the costs of attending MSC and are considered to be gift aid, which means it does not need to be repaid to the U.S. Department of Education.

To be eligible to receive Grants, a student must: • • •

• • • •

Not have received their first Bachelor’s degree Have demonstrated financial need based off the results provided by the FAFSA Have a high school diploma, General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or pass an independently administered test approved by the U.S. Department of Education that gives evidence of the studentÕ s ability to benefit from training Enroll in a full-time program of at least 600 clock hours and is at least 15 weeks in duration Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen Have a valid Social Security number Register with the Selective Service, if required

All Grant programs are awarded based on financial need. A standard formula has been established by the U.S. Congress to calculate the studentÕ s Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The formula uses the information provided by the student and parent(s) to determine the EFC. A student’s financial need is the EFC as calculated by the FAFSA and is subtracted from the cost of attendance.

LOANS MSC participates in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFEL). The following types of Federal loans are offered: • • •

Subsidized Loans Unsubsidized Loans Parent PLUS Loans

The subsidized loan does not accrue interest while the student is in attendance and payment begins six months after the student completes their program at MSC or drops below half-time enrollment.

The unsubsidized loan does accrue interest while the student is in school and the student can choose if he/she wishes to pay for the interest while enrolled. Should the student elect not to make payments on the interest, repayment does not begin until six months after the student completes their program at MSC or drops below half-time enrollment.

The Parent PLUS loan is a loan for dependent students that the parent can apply for.

A credit check is completed by the U.S. Department of Education before the parent is eligible to receive this loan on behalf of the student. With this loan, interest is accrued while the student is in school and payments begin six weeks after the loan is fully disbursed.

Because MSC is a year-round school, the Financial Aid Office is able to make awards throughout the year. Students approved for aid are notified by mail.

SCHOLARSHIPS Maricopa Skill Center receives a limited amount of monetary donations to be used as scholarship money. A FAFSA must be on file and federal financial assistance applied before eligibility for one of these scholarships can be assessed. Availability of these scholarships varies.

A student may also complete his/her own research on scholarships. There are many scholarship opportunities available for educational assistance. Please visit www.maricopaskillcenter.com to research additional scholarships.

Most scholarships require that a FAFSA be on file before determining eligibility.

COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS & AGENCIES The Maricopa Skill Center works with many community organizations and agencies that fund area residents’ job training. Students who don’t qualify for Federal funding may want to ask the Financial Aid Office for help in locating an agency that provides training money,

BUSINESS OFFICE MSC’s Business Office maintains each student’s financial account. The Business Office determines the cost of your educational expenses in comparison with secured funding from financial aid or community resources. They will assist you in determining any remaining cost due to MSC or refund due to you.

PAYMENT METHOD Payment arrangements, to include receipt of down payment if required, and/or Financial Aid must be in place prior to the program start date.

Maricopa Skill Center offers three payment methods: 1. Cash payment agreements. Make monthly payments against an approved, signed cash payment agreement through MSC Business Office using cash, check, or credit card. Payments under this method must be on a monthly basis. Please inquire with the business office for information on MSC’s down payment policy.

2. Receive a Federal grant or loan. Tuition will be deducted monthly from the grant or loan according to the studentÕ s hours of attendance. Any shortfall must be paid through a cash payment agreement; a down payment may be required.

3. Receive training funds from a community-based agency. The MSC Business Office will bill the agency directly. Any shortfall must be paid through a cash payment agreement; a down payment may be required.

REFUND POLICY Maricopa Skill Center tuition is prepaid monthly and any unused tuition for a continuing student is credited toward the next month. When a student graduates, withdraws, or is terminated, any unused/prepaid tuition is refunded to the payer.

All federal funds, to include loans and Pell Grants, received by the business office on behalf of the student are applied to educational expenses prior to determining the studentÕ s eligibility for a refund from Financial Aid disbursements. Due to MSC being a clock hour school, Financial Aid disbursements may not be refunded in a lump sum; please see the business office for a full explanation.

The registration fee is not refundable. The official date of withdrawal is the last date of attendance.

Lab and Book Fees are only refundable in the event that the class is canceled or the student drops/withdraws prior to beginning the core classes within a program of study.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS All direct educational expenses (tuition, lab/materials, and registration fees Ð previous or concurrent Maricopa Community College debts) must be paid in full before graduation. A certificate will not be awarded to anyone who owes money to the Maricopa Skill Center or any Maricopa Community College. Students must pay debts even if they are not currently attending class.

Any debt not paid in full could cause default penalty charge actions to be set in motion as described below: Default. Any debt or returned check may revoke a studentÕ s current enrollment and the studentÕ s right to register in subsequent semesters at all Maricopa Community Colleges. Delinquent debts may require penalties, late charges, collection costs, and/or legal fees to be paid before good standing is restored to the student.

Penalty Charge. Failure to make payments on time could result in charges assessed against the studentÕ s Maricopa Skill Center account. Penalty charges may be calculated at the rate of $10 each month, or part thereof, that payment is late. The total amount of said charge may not exceed $50. It is the student’s responsibility to inform Admissions and Records of any changes to his/her contact information (address, phone number, etc.). Non-receipt of invoices due to inaccurate student information on file with Student Services will not be grounds for dispute.

STUDENT RESOURCES ESSENTIAL SKILLS CENTER The Essential Skills Center (ESC) is committed to preparing students for success in their training and beyond. Using an interactive software package (KeyTrainª) based upon the nationally recognized Federal Work Keysª, the ESC assesses and trains students in eight areas essential to workplace success (reading, applied mathematics, locating information, observation, listening, teamwork, writing, and soft skills). Working at their own pace with a knowledgeable instructor on hand, students progress to their industry-determined levels.

The ESC is very flexible and will work with students on an individual basis to reach their training goals. For assistance developing any of the listed skills, please call 602.238.4353.

STUDENT RESOURCE ADVISOR Through an agency partnership, Maricopa Skill Center provides a Student Resource Advisor to assist students in balancing school, work, and family life.

Students are directed to social service resources that address crises including food, housing, childcare, and finances. Students are connected with community support services for problems such as abuse, addictions, stress management, and health care.

The Student Resource Advisor is located in room 133 in the main hall next to the Business Office and is available by appointment. For more information or to make an appointment, call 602.238.4390.

CAREER SERVICES The Career Services Department is available for students and graduates to assist in the transition from student to employee. The staff works with employers to gather industry specific information about their hiring needs, allowing for better alignment between training and employer expectation. Career Services provides employment assistance to graduates and alumni, and a Job Readiness course for current students which covers topics such as résumé writing, interview skills, job readiness skills, and job-searching techniques.

The Career Services Department maintains job boards and employment resources, including computers that students can use to access job banks to aid in their job search. The department also assists with intern/extern and apprenticeship opportunities when available.

Career Services provides a resource for area employers to post current job openings for the targeted employees they are seeking. Employers from various industries throughout the Valley continually post their openings with Career Services. Employers are also invited to come to campus to conduct on-site interviews for immediate hire.

Maricopa Skill Center also hosts job and career fairs for students and graduates.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS COURSE COMPETENCIES Every Maricopa Skill Center course has a list of the competencies each student must achieve in order to successfully complete the course. MSC develops course competencies in concert with leading industry feedback and, in many cases, the courses also align with external certifications. Every competency is comprised of 1) learning tasks, designed to teach the competencies, and 2) assessments, designed to measure how well a student has mastered the competency. Full listings of courses and associated competencies, learning tasks, and assessments are available from instructors at any time. Ask your instructor for details.

ATTENDANCE As the mission of the Maricopa Skill Center is to provide the necessary skills for our graduates to be economically self-sufficient, we stress the importance of consistent attendance in concert with the desires of employers. Students are expected to attend class for 100% of their scheduled weekly hours. Those dropping below minimum expectations will be subject to disciplinary action. Please see the Student Handbook for details.

MINIMUM PROGRESS Maricopa Skill Center student progress is measured by the studentÕ s ability to accomplish competencies within stated time frames. It is the discretion of the Instructor to determine whether these competencies are met. Failure to demonstrate satisfactory progress may result in a referral for further evaluation, loss of financial aid and/or agency support, or termination of enrollment.

ACCOUNTING ASSOCIATE

The Accounting Associate certificate program prepares you to succeed in a variety of accounting positions in any type of business, from the one-owner entity to a large corporation. Graduates with this certificate typically find entry-level work in the accounting field working with numerical data necessary to keep complete financial records. Generally, duties will include performance of routine calculating, journalizing, posting, and verifying primary financial data for use in maintaining accounting records. You may also check the accuracy of business transactions recorded by other workers. You will learn how to do the necessary procedures manually – so you gain a solid understanding of the concepts – as well as electronically record the transactions using the newest available versions of popular accounting software.

The Accounts Receivable/Payable Clerk certificate program prepares you with the skills to succeed as an accounts receivable or accounts payable clerk in any type of business, from the one-owner entity to a large corporation. The Account Clerk Program prepares you with the skills needed to compute, classify, and record numerical data to keep complete financial records. Graduates will perform routine calculating, posting, and verifying to obtain primary financial data for use in maintaining accounting records. They may also check the accuracy of figures, calculations, and posting pertaining to business transactions recorded by other workers. The Payroll Clerk certificate program prepares you with the skills to succeed as a payroll clerk in any type of business, from the one-owner entity to a large corporation. COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST

The Computer Support Specialist Certificate program teaches you the skills required to function in a variety of positions in the technology field such as structured cabling installers, computer sales people, helpdesk technicians, network technicians, or network administrators. It prepares you for industry standard certifications such as Microsoft’s MCDST and the CompTIA A+®. It will also provide a strong foundation if you wish to pursue high-level certifications such as Microsoft’s MCSE.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Computer Support Specialist; PC Repair Technician; Network Technician; Network Cable Installer; Network Administrator; Helpdesk Technician; Computer Operator.

Schedule: The computer repair courses start the first Monday of each month. In order to start the CNP portion of the program, students must have completed the Essentials of Computer Support course and all ISP courses prior to the first Monday of the month. Students are required to attend the 9:00 am lecture delivered in their CNP courses.

Duties include answering questions from customers or members of the public; transmitting information documents to others using computer, e-mail, or facsimile machine; reading source documents such as forms, or reports, and entering data in specific data fields. As a Legal Administrative Assistant you will work for private law firms, federal, state, and local government agencies, public utility companies, insurance companies, local court systems, legal departments of large banks, corporate legal departments, and non-profit legal aid offices. Performing specialized clerical and administrative duties, the Legal Administrative Assistant assists lawyers and judges by editing and processing formal legal documents, preparing legal papers and correspondence, filing papers with the court or other government agencies, corresponding with clients, keeping accurate case records, and conducting legal research.

Graduates will work with a variety of software and databases and utilize computers, scanners, fax machines, copiers, telephones, and other office machines and equipment to complete their work.

PRINTING business & technology

DIGITAL GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS

The Digital Graphic Communications program prepares you for work in the printing industry. You will gain experience in electronic publishing; proofing, plate making; equipment make ready; operation and maintenance; and product bindery/finishing operations. You will become proficient in pre-press skills through use of industry-standard software on both PC and Macintosh computers as it relates to the computer-to-plate process. Additionally, you will be introduced to advanced printing techniques and technology, including learning to print various types of print media using the 4-color process, formatting documents to produce high-quality prints on a digital press, and outputting plates on a computer-to-plate printer. You will have the opportunity to learn silk-screen processes, including designing and preparing images for print transfer on to T-shirts, caps, shoes, etc. All students perform minor maintenance, equipment clean-up procedures, and practice industry safety procedures.

The Offset Press Operator course prepares you for positions in the printing industry such as: press operator, bindery/finisher, offset press operator, or printing assistant. You will learn to set up, operate, and maintain printing presses to print text, illustrations, and designs on a variety of paper materials. Press operators are found in printing companies, combined publishing and printing establishments, and other industries with in-house printing departments. As a training pressman, you will learn about all the elements that go into a printing job including setting up and adjusting the plates, cylinders, and dampeners. You will determine the correct ink tone and density by mixing and adjusting inks and make fine adjustments to the quality of the product. In some cases, you may be working closely with others who are responsible for supplying materials to the press while you are operating it. Additionally, you will learn to monitor and restock materials and inks used during the print process.

The Bindery & Finishing Operator program prepares you for employment as a bindery or print finisher for the printing industry. You will learn bindery operations such as setting up and operating a programmable collator, cutter, stitcher, punch, and various other bindery-room equipment. Maricopa Skill Center’s Cosmetologist course of study will prepare you with the skills needed to become a licensed cosmetologist. You will provide beauty services such as shampooing, cutting, coloring, perming, and styling hair. Additionally, you will practice braiding, pressing, curling, relaxing, and designing hairstyles. You will also perform any combination of beauty services for hair, nails, and skin. The program covers topics that will assist you as you enter the job market including human relations, client communication skills, personal development skills, and skills for starting and managing your own salon. All cosmetology students extensively review the Arizona Board of Cosmetology’s rules and regulations, with special emphasis on sanitation and infection control.

MEDICAL ASSISTANT: FRONT & BACK OFFICE

The Medical Assistant Program prepares you to work in a variety of healthcare settings such as physicians’ offices and clinics. The coursework includes medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, legal and ethical aspects of healthcare delivery, office skills including patient data management, clinical skills including basic phlebotomy, medication administration, sterilization, and specimen testing. Graduates of the program may become certified or registered by one or more professional organizations.

Entry Requirement: Applicants must attend the information session prior to enrolling. Finger print clearance card, TB test results, and current immunizations records are required prior to admission.

Medical Billers and Coders work in a wide variety of roles, such as reimbursement specialist, coding specialist, patient advocate, claims reviewer, compliance officer, compliance audit specialist, health insurance specialist, and training or consulting positions. Medical Billers and Coders usually work for insurance providers or in physician offices, clinics, and hospitals. Medical Billers and Coders work with all healthcare providers that accept insurance for payment including traditional and alternative practitioners, physical therapists, dentists, and veterinarians. Graduates of the Medical Biller/Coder Program may test for a national certification from one or more professional organizations.

Entry Requirement: Applicants must attend the information session prior to enrolling. Finger print clearance card, TB test results, and current immunizations records are required prior to admission.

Auto body painters are often asked to prepare surfaces of vehicles like buses, trucks, and automobiles by removing the existing finish by means of chemicals, sanding, or sandblasting; to refinish or repaint the equipment using various spray equipment; to prepare and paint heavy and light machinery; and mix paints and match colors.

The Automation Technology Program (ATP) offers student workers the opportunity to embark on a career as well as learn manufacturing skills to federally-endorsed national standards and to demonstrate that they have mastered the skills increasingly needed in the high-growth technology-intensive jobs of the 21st century.

Students will receive 12 college credits towards an AAS degree to participating colleges and a “Certified Production Technician” (CPT) certificate from Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) is awarded to individuals who pass all four Production Modules: Safety; Quality Practices & Measurement; Manufacturing Processes & Production; and Maintenance Awareness. The certificate is applicable to all sectors of manufacturing. Campus tours to colleges and prospective employers are part of the curriculum.

ELECTRICIAN WORKER WITH INTRODUCTION TO HVAC

Workers with this training typically will be called upon to assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.

Additionally, they may be expected to diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem. MSC’s Apprentice Meat Cutter Certificate prepares you for a position as an apprentice meat cutter in a retail grocery store or at a warehouse. You will identify retail and wholesale cuts of meat and gain knowledge of basic math, proper meat-cutting terminology, and basic retail merchandising concepts. You will learn the proper use and care of hand tools and power equipment. During training, you will process beef rib, beef chuck, beef round, beef loin, pork loins, pork butts, and poultry for retail sales. You may also process whole beef, whole hog, whole lamb, and game meats when available. The importance of safety, sanitation, and customer service in the meat-cutting industry is emphasized.

MEAT DEPARTMENT HELPER

MSC’S meat department helper program prepares you for a position in a retail grocery store or a warehouse store. You will assist the meat cutters with the preparation of beef, pork, and poultry to be cut for retail sales. In addition, you will assist the meat wrapper by helping to package, wrap, and display meat products for retail sales. You may be responsible for cleaning the meat department and related areas as needed.

The CNC Machinist Certificate prepares graduates to operate manual lathes, manual mills, surface grinders, drill presses, read blueprints, write programs, and operate CNC (Computer Numerical Control) lathes and mills.

The CNC Machinist program is accredited by the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) and provides the opportunity to sit for all Machinist Level I certifications.

The Small Business Accounting series is designed to give small business owners a basic understanding of bookkeeping and accounting procedures as they relate to a small business. You will learn how to manage your record keeping, payroll preparation, and tax return filing needs through the use of computerized accounting software. An overview of accounting and payroll preparation will be presented and then you will learn how to enter transactions and create the necessary reports and financial statements using either QuickBooks Pro or Microsoft Office Accounting software.
