MODULE | The module was made by extruding basic shapes via a pattern analysis and taking consideration to emphasize the contrast of smooth skeletal bones with the a flat rigid plate. Both the smooth “bones” and the plate are used for connection to the next module; both equally important in the module and via different views, both used for different visual effect. The module is reflected and thus the facade can be shown the same on both sides but, breaking down the module into it’s un-reflected piece the facade becomes a dynamic piece with an abundance of visual variety, all with the same module.

PORTFOLIO

FACADE APPLICATION | In the application of the facade, the modules’ overall thickness was increased from it’s 3D printed prototype. The elevational dimensions were also decreased in height to allow for the facade to become a structural component. With a floor plate width within boundaries to be held by the structural facade, the building can be a true open floor plan and allow for only one side to be structurally bound. The module’s inherent depth also allows for optimal solar shading.

The Painters’ Lakehouse and Workshop is the quintessential retreat in the form of a home and studio space for artists in temporary residence and their families. Their communal home offers picturesque and sustainable living opportunities with views of the surrounding farm country and lake. The easily accessible adjacent Workshop studio space offers ambient lighting and painting storage as well as spaces idealized for painting ‘en plein air’ on the workshop porch and the green roof of the neighboring, below-grade, storage shed.
As light may be the most useful tool and medium for painters, natural lighting and the orientation of spaces on the site to receive it are what will define the spaces as welcoming and intrinsic to the work of the artists.
Wind as a design tool in this rural waterfront landscape focuses on the use of a ‘wind tunnel’ between the occupied spaces. The wind tunnel has access to the communal spaces while also circumventing the spaces that are to be more private and warm.
As an artist would pay special attention to the qualities of a scene that exhibits the best light and movement and use skill and technique to exemplify such qualities in a painting, we aim to reap peak functional and spiritual benefits from lighting and wind in the design of the Painters’ Lakehouse.

45% of Americans have no access to public transportation. The common Atlanta commuter alone will spend on average 72 hours per year in congestion. Both of these statistics include the workers, attendees, and residents of the Battery (home of Trusit Park of the Atlanta Braves baseball team). While mass transit allows for the commuter to become freed of their dependence on individual vehicles; historical, racial, economic, and social stigma as well as basic design inefficiences of mass transportation systems discredit the potent opportunity for a transit sop to become a consensus in design between economic, environmental, and social sustainability. When the stadium moved from inner Atlanta (Turner Field) to outside the perimeter of the city (2017), speculation arose as to how the demographics of the workers and attendees of the stadium (and now adjoining eat/shop/ dine attachment (The Battery)) were changed and how this correlated with access to public transportation.

Zaha Hadid’s 4th year design thesis was based on the theory set fourth by the Russian Suprematist art movement and, more specifically, the works of Kandinsky. Utilizing ‘mutilation’ and ‘fragmentation’ she studied the process of the artist and recreated it when creating spaces. In the conceptual phase, Hadid researches exhaustively in a range of techniques and materials but uses paintings to show the direct link between her architectural process and where it derived; in painting. Focusing on the same factors such as ‘fragmentation’ I also focused on notions of ‘movement’ and ‘cohesian’ when creating my own triptych painting and when considering the function of my design and the greater goal in the urban context.
The Battery, being a fairly new addition to Cobb County and the larger Atlanta Metropolitan Area, is heavily influenced by its surrounding building typologies which all existed prior to it. The surrounding neighborhoods are, in turn, heavily influenced by the addition of the Battery. All residents living off Cobb Pkwy now must adhere to gameday traffic, increased ticket prices, and although an increase in service-industry jobs, the common Marietta/ Smyrna resident are not the targeted audience of The Battery and thus Cobb County treats the site like the alien it is by rejecting any further connection to innercity happenings, first and foremost any access to mass transportation.

Formal typology is concerned with questions such as what basic forms can be recognised, or which formal characteristics have remained constant over a significant period. Functional typology represents the functions of a building and analyzes these functions without making aesthetic judgements. By purposely matching each functional typology with its own individual formal typology, there is visual clarification to the visitor as to which buildings perform different intended functions.

The religious institution's existing building dated back to the early 70's. Although there were some necessary maintainence and restorative work to be done, there was also an overall of interior colors and lighting. Despite many spaces being outdated, there were many beautiful aspects to the building that had been overshadowed by uncontemporary finishings - literally overshadowed. The building lacked sunlight completely in many main gathering spaces. This image is a render made to show the main sanctuary (religious gathering space) during the day and the refreshed quality some skylights and windows can make to an existing riverstone mosaic wall that wraps the back of the sanctuary.
The elevation is a demonstration of how we can still portray the existing beauty of the building in construction documents through subtle visual queues highlighting existing and new elements.
“Whatever good things we build end up building us.”
