HOSPITALITY

HAMILTON HAUS

HOSTEL | SPRING 2024

Partner(s): Luke VanDenBergh

6 weeks

Hamilton, Ohio

Inspired by "German Village", the area of Hamilton the existing building is located in, this adaptive reuse project is a hostel with an emphasis on preservation.

The Hamilton Haus's Bierhall and Black Forest inspired cafe tie the project to Bavaria while It's guest rooms and lobby continue to preserve the Jacobian Victorian charm of the original space.

Guest Rooms

CLASSIC VICTORIAN

The existing building was built in the early 1900s and is designed in a Victorian Jacobian style. Because of this, we chose to continue the Victorian aesthetic throughout the guest rooms. There are two different types of rooms - a 1-2 person apartment style space, and a 4 person bunk room typical of a hostel. Room finishes align with historical precedent and existing finishes throughout the building.

Materiality

PRESERVATION & THEMING

The lobby material palette works in conjunction with existing elements and add touches like tile trim and wallpaper, as well as wainscotting that would have been in the space originally.

Inspired by "German Village", the Hamilton Haus's Bierhall and Black Forest inspired cafe utilize materials that are traditional to the areas they are inspired by.

WORKPLACE

OFFICE | FALL 2025

8 weeks

New Haven, Connecticut

Tasked with creating a satellite office for Gensler, the challenge became choosing a location that would serve the firm best. New Haven, Connecticut is located conveniently between New York and Boston.

Pulling from the area’s bridges and the New Haven Green, a park adjacent to the space, the conceptual idea for the office is to explore the idea of “bridging” – how to connect communities, offices, departments, and literal spaces within the office to promote collaboration and unity.

Design Development

MODERN + YOUTHFUL

A large majority of the current Gensler offices are in historical, old buildings. Because of this, the design typically preserves elements of the original design. Because this project shell was a new construction building, a decision was made to lean into the youthfulness of the new building. This design is meant to be playful and have fun pops of surprise throughout the space.

HOSPITALITY

SPIN

RESTAURANT & RETAIL | SPRING 2024

3 weeks

Oxford, Ohio

Enscape Photoshop

SPIN is where modern meets ornate. At this intersection, community forms to experience the revival of the record. SPIN aims to create a space for everyone, from the music aficianado looking for their new favorite album to the girl's night out.

Inspired by music, SPIN is a vinyl store and bar. Design influence was drawn from the concept of the vinyl record, and the space was meant to feel classy and comfortable. Revit

Intention

ORNATE + TRANSITIONAL

Materials were chosen with a consideration for sustainability: natural woods, cork wallcoverings, and highly durable metals, tiles, and stones adorn the space.

The creation of a separate retail and gathering space helps SPIN transition from day to night, all while creating a pocket in a community that currently lacks multisue, day-to-night entertainment.

One of my longest and most intensive intern projects, I was given the task of pouring over hundreds of sheets and trying to find references to any complicated ceiling & lighting details. Once the details were identified, I went through every single fixture specified and made sure they worked with the current detail drawn. If there was a conflict, either the detail or the specified fixture were updated.

Two examples of the many details that were updated are shown, one being the recessed wall-wash light detail in the bathroom ceiling that not only showed the wrong fixture in the detail but also interfered with the brand standard mirror.

AIRPORT | INTERNSHIP

HOK Lighting Group

Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City International Airport was a project I jumped into in the tail-end of construction. As lights were being installed in the concourse, the contractors and construction crew realized that they didn't know how to best aim the spotlights down the walkways.

I was tasked with conducting calculations to discover the most effective way of lighting the hallway and to analyze the potential patterns that they may create. The images to the right show the aiming pattern that had originally been installed.

Updated Aiming thoroughfare

The diagrams below showcase different lighting patterns that were ideated to illuminate the concourse.

Through some more investigation and conversations with the design team, the aiming diagrams on the right side were chosen.

Each light needed to be installed a very specific angle and orientation, which then went out to the contractor for on-site updates.

The new Royal Caribbean Headquarters was a learning experience on site lighting for me. The project had just come off hold, so I was tasked with confirming the lighting specifications from the original set of plans. I created an AGI model from scratch to create photometric calculations for the site, loaded in many different fixture types, and went through the process to individually aim each fixture.

The University of Kentucky has a tradition across campus of lighting their buildings "Wildcat Blue" to celebrate athletic wins, and this was something the architecture team wanted to include this on the new health sciences building. One of the potential solutions was lighting the side of the stair tower.

After calculating the light quantity needed and which fixtures to use, I was tasked with adding light to the renders that would be presented to the architecture team and clients for consideration.

URBAN PLANNING

TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT

RESEARCH PROJECT | INTERNSHIP

HOK SUMMER INTERNS

Partner(s): Eleanor Fucetola, Andrea Frank, Michael Bi, & Keying Zhong

St. Louis Missouri

The intern team collaborated on a proposed transit-oriented development that is catalyzed by the St. Louis Northside-Southside Light Rail Expansion, known as the MetroLink Green Line.

Focusing on the intersection of Jefferson and MLK jr. Boulevard in St. Louis, the interns catalogued existing conditions and explored potential development opportunities that the site has to offer. Several key stakeholders were engaged who are helping to define the project, including Metro St. Louis, City of Saint Louis Planning and Design, Bi-State Development and local developers.

Based on this research, the team developed a theoretical design concept at the community focused site, integrating spaces for housing, offices, parks, and more, along with landscaping, lighting, and public art.

TAMBOUR CABINET

FURNITURE | CLASSWORK

Tools utilized: CNC machine, tablesaw, band saw, router, belt, spindle, and hand sanders, drill, etc.

3 Weeks

Looking to create more functional storage for the entryway to my college apartment, this cabinet was designed to have a level top for surface storage and a wide, tall interior for spacious storage.

After sketching out some rough ideas, I switched to Revit to model each piece of the cabinet and work through some of the construction challenges, as well as scale each element to create the ideal proportions. Once the design was set, construction began.

I CNC'd the track for the tambour to slide through and cut and sanded each piece of the tambour doors. Once the tambour pieces were complete, I built out a frame to hold them in place while I adhered fabric to the back of each piece, allowing the tambour to stay together as it goes around the curves of the door track.

STUDY ABROAD

DIFFERDANGE, LUXEMBOURG

Fall 2023

My semester abroad at Miami University’s Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg was one full of growth and exploration. I visited 9 countries and was immersed in architecture and culture throughout these different regions.

Part of the rigourous architecture study included a trip to the Venice Architecture Biennale where we got to experience the “Laboratory of the Future” of architecture.

The images chosen represent some of my significant travels and architectural education while abroad.
