selected works 2023

I am currently in my third year of Architectural Engineering at the University of Waterloo, which is a program dedicated to bridging the gap between structure and design.

My interest in design lies with the integration of functionality and aesthetic, while incorporating the use of sustainable building materials. I have gained exposure to such aspects by achieving my LEED Green Associate accreditation, creating and presenting a residential retrofit design project for the Solar Decathlon Build Challenge event held at the US Department of Energy in April of 2022, and prioritizing timber construction and local material use while at Duke Engineering, FIA, and Upward Construction. The following selected works consist of professional, academic, and personal projects that successfully display my technical skills, creativity, and range of experience.

EMERALD PLACE EMERALD PLACE

Emerald Place is a mixed-use, mid-rise, residential building designed for Kitchener, Ontario. Investigation into the demographic of the area and nearby amenities inspired the spaces in the ground floor of the building. The building prioritizes the feeling of community through the building shape and interior programming, as gathering spaces for residents and the public are incorporated. Sustainable practices were also prioritized by including an efficient wall assembly, wood framing system, solar chimney, and connecting occupants with the outdoors.

CAMBRIDGE COMMUNITY CENTRE CAMBRIDGE COMMUNITY CENTRE

The Cambridge Community Centre is a facility designed to serve its community with a gymnasium, public library, multipurpose spaces, and a community kitchen. The building's stone base, familiar to downtown Galt, is modernized with wood siding and large windows. The extruded overhang over the entrances uses a warm toned wood underside to draw people in.

The main atrium that bisects the building allows for a clear view through the heart of the building, connecting the interior and exterior spaces. Windows into the library and gymnasium connect both halves of the gym to the atrium. Climate resiliency measures include onsite batteries to store electricity in preparation for winter power outages, as well as extruded façade features at the main entrances to prevent excess solar gains.

THE WAVE THE WAVE

The Wave is a University of Waterloo residence recladding and canopy addition that reflects the inviting interior space on the building's outside. The free-flowing shape created through multiple curved fins adds a unique softness to the building, and creates a significant divide between living and learning, while increasing thermal performance and prioritizing durability. The canopy addition acts as a gathering space for students to escape from the enclosed spaces they live and work in. The curved shape mimics the building's new cladding while strategically providing shade that encourages students to meet away from the building's entrance.

SUNKEN PAVILIONSUNKEN PAVILION

The Sunken Pavilion is located on the south end of Waterloo Park, built partially on land and into the waters of Silver Lake, granting the public a new perspective when viewing the water. The structure provides a unique interaction with the lake for a diverse audience as the wheelchair accessible ramp and three levels of landing allow for all to comfortably venture down to eye-level with the water. The unique wave-form canopy that hovers over the escalation provides shelter form the elements while resembling the shape of water itself. The Sunken Pavilion immerses its audience in nature while acting as an escape from daily life above tide.

SMITH GARAGE SMITH GARAGE

With the only information given by the client being two dimensions, this garage was an original design that accommodated the Ontario Building Code while maximizing usable space.

A functional and visually pleasing design was delivered by correctly sizing all needed beams, rafters, and joists, and utilizing styles and materials that resembled the client's existing house while maximizing space. The project was successfully issued for permit in November of 2020, and is currently under construction in the District of Parry Sound.

SELECTED WORKS SELECTED WORKS

Perspective drawing is one of my favourite forms of art, as I can allow others to understand my personal portrayal of objects. I tend to enhance detail through shading, in order to capture light exposure and ensure clarity for the audience. I also experiment with physical and digital modeling, as it allows me to conceptualize ideas and working projects, and watch my ideas become reality.
