A Note to the Community from Dr. Sara Laskey Welcome to the MetroHealth Critical Care Pavilion. Over the coming years, MetroHealth will be transforming our health system to meet the needs of our community in the twenty-first century.

We are improving our facilities at Main Campus as well as in our neighborhood facilities throughout Cuyahoga County, embracing all aspects of wellness, in addition to the traditional medical functions we have always delivered to our patients. We are dedicated to providing the community with a healing environment that supports a positive patient, employee and family experience.

Central to our renewed commitment to wellness throughout our community is the newly-established Department of Arts-in-Medicine. We believe that art, in its many forms, is transformative. It transforms the mind, the spirit and the soul. We are integrating visual, performing and therapeutic arts throughout The MetroHealth System because we believe art promotes healing, wellness and increased engagement among patients, families, caregivers and the greater community.

Our intention is that The MetroHealth System’s visual art program will be a transformative experience for everyone who interacts with the health care system at every level, whether on a regular medical visit, hospital stay or a visit to loved ones. It will embody MetroHealth’s global diversity and local focus.

It will embody MetroHealth’s global diversity and local focus and inspire a sense of hope, healing and community.

We welcome you to explore The MetroHealth System’s art program, to visit our exhibitions featuring many local artists and to be inspired by photographs of patients who inspire us every day. On any given day you might hear the music of our strolling violinist, our resident clarinetist or a doctor who often can be found playing the piano in our Rammelkamp Atrium. You might also come upon a modern dance or ballet performance.

The arts supports morale, unity and a shared sense of humanity. We hope it inspires a sense of hope, healing and community in you.

The Collection Under the system-wide transformation, each new building will present a selection of art that underscores a particular theme best suited to the purpose and location of the facility.

Guided by a theme of poetic abstraction, the collection within the Critical Care Pavilion showcases original work by regional and national artists to elicit feelings of calm, ease, peacefulness and spiritual reflection. Artworks in a variety of media—drawing, painting, weaving and collage—may be found throughout the public areas, consulting rooms and corridors.

Eva Bovenzi San Francisco, California Bovenzi’s recent paintings on paper are abstractions that draw on close observation of natural forms, such as birds and insects, and appreciation of Asian and Native American arts.

The jewel-like colors in the work are enhanced by her use of translucent Yupo paper.

Bovenzi received her BA from Kalamazoo College and an MFA at California College of the Arts. She is represented in collections throughout the western United States and internationally.

Untitled Pencil, colored pencil and watercolor on paper 2016

Kelly Dietrick Kent, Ohio Dietrick’s work explores abstract form through patterns, both planned and made by chance.

Rooted in the history of 20th-century modernism, her pencil and watercolor images vibrate with the immediacy of the present.

She received her BA from Kent State University and an MFA from Savannah College of Art and Design. Currently, she teaches at Kent State University.

Elizabeth Emery Cleveland, Ohio Emery is a sculptor and graphic artist who explores the language of collage across media in her work.

Her lyrical images weave snippets of recognizable forms into light-hearted, imaginary environments.

Emery holds a BA in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania and an MFA in ceramics from Alfred University. She has received a 2015 Ohio Arts Council award, among others. Her work has been shown throughout the Midwest and internationally.

Andrea Joki Cleveland, Ohio Joki’s paintings and works on paper explore the gap between motion and rest. In her abstract work, she creates dramatic surprise with small gestures that ask the viewer to carefully examine the changes in geometric patterns.

Joki received her BA from University of Wisconsin (Madison) and her MFA from Kent State University.

Among her many achievements are a 2015 Ohio Arts Council award and 2009 Creative Workforce Fellowship. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and held in regional collections.

Hildur Jonsson Cleveland, Ohio and Reykjavik, Iceland

Jonsson, who splits her time between Cleveland and her native Iceland, makes abstract landscapes weaving hand-dyed silk thread on large looms. In recent years, her work has achieved a monumental scale in vibrantly colored murals which are both painting and sculptures on the wall.

Jonsson holds a BFA and MFA from Kent State University in textile and fabric arts. She has received many awards, including the Cleveland Arts Prize in 2008 and the national Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant in 2016. She has had solo shows at MOCA Cleveland and the Tang Museum and has shown in numerous exhibitions locally, nationally and internationally.

Jeffrey Cortland Jones Dayton, Ohio Jones makes abstract paintings with a reduced color palette and a narrow depth of field. Using mostly whites, he changes the emotional tone of each work with a single color—the green-blue of the ocean, or the purple-gray of a cloudy day.

Jones received his BFA from University of Tennessee (Chattanooga) and his MFA at University of Cincinnati. He currently chairs the painting program at the University of Dayton.

Aaron Koehn Cleveland, Ohio and New York, New York In recent years, Koehn has moved beyond painting as representation to a deeper understanding of form and material. In his Picture Image series, gradients of color reflect the artist’s hand slowly extending paint down the canvas in a single sweep, creating a composition without any evidence of personal gesture.

The Cleveland native received his BFA at the Cleveland Institute of Art and his MFA at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has shown his work throughout the Midwest and New York.

Matthew Korbel-Bowers Berkeley, California Korbel-Bowers makes abstract posters that pay homage to the European masters of 20th-century design. He shapes visual poems of calm, joy and excitement in skillful combinations of shape, color and geometric form.

Korbel-Bowers received his BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art and his MFA at the California College of the Arts. He is a professional graphic designer in the Bay Area.

Joe Minek Cleveland, Ohio Minek uses photographic materials—color photographic paper and a range of photo chemicals—to create unique abstract images without a camera. Through his painterly images, he pushes the boundaries of the possibilities for photographic imagery beyond the conventional use of camera and film.

Minek received his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and his MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. He teaches Photography at CIA and has exhibited his work throughout the region.

Deb Lawrence Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Cleveland, Ohio Lawrence, a trained psychologist, paints with emotional intentions uppermost in her mind.

Both her more traditional abstract paintings on canvas and those on unstretched antique linen are charged with personal memories. Lawrence’s work has been exhibited and collected on regional and national scales.

Christine Mauersberger Cleveland, Ohio Mauersberger’s art is grounded in her textile and stitching. Her multimedia practice, which spans from room-size installations to delicate works on paper, always returns to the rhythms of markmaking in fabric, paper, plastic or dried leaves.

Mauersberger graduated from Cleveland State University, where she studied graphic design.

She has exhibited widely in the region, as well as nationally. She has received a 2013 Ohio Arts Council Individual Award for Excellence and a 2013 Creative Workforce Fellowship.

Lisa Schonberg Cleveland, Ohio Schonberg is a printmaker who brings her experience of many techniques to the observation of nature. Recently, she added the use of a router machine to create the matrix for the abstract topographical scene included here.

Schonberg is a Cleveland native and long-standing resident artist at Zygote Press who has taught art and printmaking at the college level for many years.

Amy Sinbondit Washington D.C. and Cleveland, Ohio Sinbondit is a ceramist who explores mark-making and gesture in clay through pots and wall pieces.

Her pieces move across a wall surface with the smooth energy of calligraphy and the vibrant color of a flourishing garden.

Sinbondit received her BFA from the University of Toledo and her MFA in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design. She received a 2009 Ohio Arts Council Individual Award for Excellence and has exhibited her work throughout the region and nationally. She teaches at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Freddie Styles Atlanta, Georgia An avid gardener, Styles found inspiration for art in manicured nature. This work represents a recent trend of creating semi-abstract nature scenes by applying gesso and pigment with crushed paper, thus creating gestural, but controlled, effects.

Styles graduated from Morris Brown College in Atlanta and worked as artist-in-residence at other colleges in the city, Clark Atlanta University and Spelman College. His work has been shown and collected the South as well as in Europe. He is represented in the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.

Grace Summanen Cleveland, Ohio Summanen, a painter and mixed-media artist, made this series of drawings and prints over several years. According to the artist, the drawings are not studies for any other works, but rather experiments in color and form.

Summanen received her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and her MFA from Kent State University, where she now teaches in the painting department. Her work has been shown throughout the region.

Cori Williams London, England and Atlanta, Georgia Williams confines her gestural abstract imagery to works on paper. She limits her delicate drawings to small scale sheets, which enable her to highlight nuances of line and transparency.

Williams, currently a performance student at Goldsmith’s College, London, holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Lauren Yeager Cleveland, Ohio Yeager is a conceptual artist who applies visual media to exploring age-old questions. The calendar work—twelve sheets of simple construction paper exposed to daylight—finds a simple, direct way to visualize the passing of time by recording the daily flight of the sun over this humble material.

Yeager graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art. She has been included in several regional exhibitions at MOCA Cleveland in recent years.
