Letter to the editor

Are vintage clothes worth the price tag?

Dear Editor, I had a few questions about what is considered “vintage clothing.” Is vintage classified by the specific year that the clothing was manufactured? Or does it have to do with the particular style or how worn the clothes are? I have seen a lot of stores online and in person that specifically sells vintage clothing. I also noticed that a kit of stores will up charge you for the price of vintage clothing. Do you think it is worth it to pay more

for something that is supposedly older? I am very curious to know how much those clothes are actually worth and if the love of vintage clothes is purely aesthetics or if there is some real value in owning vintage pieces. I hope you are able to talk more about vintage clothes and thrifting in a new edition soon!

Sincerely, Hallie

Reducing consumption of micro trends

Dear Editor, I wanted to write you about the Fall 2022 edition and how it inspired me to rethink what I am buying. I thought it was so clever how you mentioned how most clothes that are considered “micro trends” end up at a thrift store or in a landfill. Clothing items that were all the rage, like bright-colored patterned tops and Fla sneakers, suddenly stopped being in style almost as quickly as they came in. I have noticed an increase in micro trends due to social media apps like Instagram and TikTok. Your previous Rebel Thrift edition made me realize how easy it can be to buy into those fast fashion micro trends to seem fashionable and relevant. I really appreciated how Rebel Thrift didn’t shame readers for previously

shopping at fast fashion stores but instead directed readers to start thrifting basic clothing pieces. I liked your idea that instead of trying to buy the newest trendy clothes to instead invest in universal items like a good pair of jeans and basic tops in solid neutral colors. This way, you can accessorize or add layers to add dimension to the outfit. These tips have helped me discover my personal style and helped curve my need to overspend on the latest trend. I look forward to reading the next Rebel Thrift edition and am excited to learn more about the importance of thrifting and what to look out for!

Sincerely, Sarah

Stages of the fashion cycle

The fashion cycle refers to “the rise, wide popularity and then decline in acceptance of a style.”

Introduction of a style: A new style, color, or design is introduced as “high fashion.”

Rise/ Increase in popularity: This is the phase where knock-o s and copycats start to appear.

Peak of Popularity: This is when the item is at it’s height of popularity and in high demand.

Decilne in popularity: The item is not as popular and sales start to decline.

Rejection of style: This where the style starts to become obsolete. People may even start to dislike the style.

Welcome To The Fashion Revolution

What if I told you that you had to stop buying clothes from stores like Shein, Fashion Nova, and Forever 21? Don’t worry; I am not demanding that you immediately quit, but I advise that you rethink your next purchase. I understand the appeal of the type of stores. They always have the trendiest clothes at affordable prices. After all, this is how fast fashion thrives for those who may not be familiar with this term; according to Olivia Lai at earth.org, fast fashion refers to “a large section of the fashion industry whose business model relies on cheap and speedy production of low quality clothing.”

What is happening?

Fast fashion is not easy to avoid as it is growing in popularity from social media apps like TikTok, showing video after video of clothing hauls. As well as, no one on Instagram wants to be caught in the same outfit twice.

Now you may be wondering what the environmental impacts of fast fashion are. According to the UN Environment Progamme, “the industry is the secondbiggest consumer of water and is responsible for 8-10% of global carbon emissions.”

These impact water and energy consumption but also have social welfare implications. Not only fast fashion brands are being called out for their environmental implications.

Designer brands are being exposed for burning and destroying old merchandise they could no longer sell. These are only a few examples of the fashion industry’s ecological strain.

However, there has been a rise in slow fashion brands trying their best to be an ethical force of change. However, some of these ethical fashion brands cost $80 for a basic t-shirt. For the average person, this is not in their price range.

“Designer brands are being exposed for burning and destroying old merchandise.”

There is hope!

The truth is that there is no way to be 100% ethical regarding fashion. The world needs people to be perfectly imperfect and make small strides to shop more sustainably. You may be wondering what shopping more sustainably looks like. For starters, you can reduce your clothing purchases and stick with what you already have. Adding layers or different accessories can create new outfits with the clothes you already have. You can also learn quick fixes for clothing that needs a minor fix but is still fully functional.

If you are interested in saving up for clothing by an ethical fashion brand, I would suggest investing in versatile pieces that you can style in many ways. For example, this could be a nice pair of jeans that you will surely get a lot of use. For the clothes that you no longer want, I would suggest reselling them online. There are a lot of excellent reselling apps like Mercari,

Depop, and Curtsy. This is a great way to get unwanted clothes out of your closet and make some extra money along the way. Another great way to rid of unwanted clothes is by hosting a clothing swap between friends or your community. Doing this allows you to get a whole new wardrobe without purchasing any new clothes. Thrifting is a meaningful way to try and reduce your consumption of new clothing and give new life to someone’s former clothing. Living a fully sustainable life is not possible right now, but that does not mean that we shouldn’t make strides to try to protect our environment and the future. The important thing is that we are actively pushing towards a fashion revolution.

Lets talk about online thrifting!

Dear Editor, I wanted to write to you about your top ten online resale/thrifting apps in the last edition of Rebel Thrift. I had previously only been trying to sell my clothes to stores like Plato’s Closet or donating them to a local thrift store. I had no idea how easy it was to sell my clothes online! I am currently selling on two different apps and have had success with both. I also appreciated the helpful tips on how to market the clothes you sell them online. I also really enjoyed

your article about what to be cautious of when thrift shopping online. I agreed with a lot of the things you were saying about sellers up charging the price nowhere near to what they paid for it. I am looking forward to more helpful tips in the future editions of Rebel Thrift!

Sincerely, Alex
