A Reunion That Mended a Brotherhood and Reinvigorated Joy for Thousands
A Reunion That Mended a Brotherhood and Reinvigorated Joy for Thousands
Personal Essay by Jeremy Malizola MetLife Crowd Photos by Erin Christie
Sometime around 2008 in a Florida suburb, I was 11 and waiting for someone to tell me something important. A desire for cultural awareness had suddenly exploded in the previous year, and I spent late school nights traversing Wikipedia for anything but mostly music that would make me into a real person. There were flashes: I froze in the back of our family minivan at the first chords of Cat Power’s “He War”, playing off an older sister’s burned CD. My father spoke in hushed tones, describing his memory of hearing ‘The White Album’ for the first time in 1968. My mother closed her eyes at a red light and sighed wistfully at Neil Young’s “Old Man” on the classic rock station.
One such flash occurred while I was holding a plastic toy guitar designed for Rock Band, a rhythm video game that had completely taken over our family home, strewing plastic drums, guitars, and microphones all over the living room. Despite its silliness, it actually comprised a decent musical education, exposing me for the first time to R.E.M., Hole, and Queens of the Stone Age, among others. But nothing hit so hard as when, perusing new songs to download with my older neighbor and babysitter, I stumbled on a pack of tracks with the artist listed as Oasis. My neighbor, 18 and probably stoned, perked up: “Oasis is like… the best of all time, dude ”
It didn’t take much else. Before long, the colored buttons on the Rock Band controller

were clicked to “Don’t Look Back in Anger” hundreds of times, “Supersonic” was on my 6th-grade MySpace page, and ‘Nevermind’ was deleted from my 1GB MP3 player to make way for ‘What’s the Story’ .
These songs were as raw and simple as could be just rock ’n’ roll but made bigger by their sheer scale, the imagery, the Gallaghers, the backdrop of Britpop I felt immersed in a larger world, understanding a cultural context that I had missed, but one that instilled a sense of belonging just by knowing it.
In the midst of the aforementioned reunion tour, there’s been a consistent commentary speaking to the universality of Oasis’ classic material how screaming every word to “Cigarettes & Alcohol” with 80,000 people in a stadium is the balm we need in these turbulent times. I don’t disagree with this sentiment (I locked arms with my seatmate and jumped until my legs ached when “C&A” was played at MetLife), but more so, sharing in songs so universal reminded me as I often am of how the severe flattening of culture by algorithms has made very little music, or much of anything, feel universal anymore.
This is an obvious observation, yes, but one that weighs on me often when I think about my entry point into music: chasing a moment when someone or something introduces you to something that pulls you into a larger context whether it’s a neighbor or Rock Band and joining in something that feels so large. It cannot be denied that Instagram, Spotify, etc., simply aren’t providing this anymore only siloing and fracturing.
But for several hours at MetLife Stadium, I could forget. I had the same Adidas jersey on as the teenagers and old men behind me, and we all knew every word to “Hello” .

Nashville Tennessee's own Snõõper just released their newest album Worldwide on Third Man Records, and I couldn’t think of a more perfect album title for them. They, themselves, describe their sound as “not fitting into any genre ” and it is very apparent when you take a look at the previous tours they have hopped on from Basement, to Machine Girl, to the Hives, they can convert any audience; they really are that cool. Everyone and their mother is always talking about Snõõper, from the Hardcore boys in Orlando, FL to the DIY punk kids in Nashville , and they even pull the sceney New York crowd out to their shows.
Worldwide is just the beginning for Snõõper, “there is always more work to be done”.
We got to chat with the band about the release of the album, their latest tour with The Hives and more.

On the Importance of DIY Spaces, Upcoming Tours, and Their New Album
On the Importance of DIY Spaces, Upcoming Tours, and Their New Album

First off, can you introduce yourselves for the readers at home? How would you describe your sound to those who have never listened to a Snõõper song?
We are Snooper - a music and art project based in Nashville, Tennessee. Snooper was started by Blair Tramel and Connor Cummins. We play fast, but don’t really fit into any genre necessarily. The fun part about Snooper is the frustration people feel when trying to categorize our music - ha! Snooper is a creative project more than anything - more than a band I like the word “project” because it implies that there is more work to be done and, with Snooper, there always is!
Can you tell us a little bit about the writing and recording process for Worldwide?
As always, we initially demoed the songs on Connor’s 8 track at home in our living room We then took those songs into a studio with John Congleton This was a huge growth opportunity for us as a band Not for the growth of the band even, necessarily, but because we were able to grow and expand our knowledge of recording Being that this was new for us, we were nervous and clung tight to our demo recordings, but John couldn’t have been more accommodating as it took us a while to open up to a new way of doing things. We are already ready and eager to record another album now that we have experience being in a studio- we know what to expect now, which feels creatively empowering!
What’s your favorite song on the album?
“Worldwide”! I imagine people dancing to it when I listen to it, and that’s the best part Filming the music video for this song was a truly unbelievable experience Watching people do choreography to one of our songs was so inspiring! Now, I only want to write songs that I can envision people dancing to! This might not be realistic, but that’s how I feel right now in this moment!
All of the music videos you’ve released so far are so fun (I am actually obsessed) can you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind them? Any fun stories from set?
Haha, thank you!! I am obsessed as well, and I’m feeling so creatively recharged and inspired after working with Arius Ziaee, Kate Renshaw-Lewis, and Joe Sams! The three of them made a video a while back and posted it online with a Snooper song! The video was AWESOME It had puppets, was super colorful, and I loved the way it was filmed Had they not made and posted that video, I wouldn’t have found them online and reached out to them to work with me on the videos for this record I am so thankful that we connected! I flew to LA to work with them for a few days and we filmed so much fun stuff Joe Sams filmed everything live in his living room He used some old, analog, public access video gear to film all three videos His setup is genuinely incredible and I’m not doing it justice by speaking about it
“Guard Dog” was inspired by the dog puppeteering of William Wegman (you have to check out his work if you ’ re not familiar), and the other two videos really came together in real time,

in the moment Joe screen and is also a objects and small th in real time and ex random objects Joe so much fun We had of miniature objects and dog bodies dow we made
I think the beauty of really doesn’t plan t He is one of the mos met He uses whate ideas. The imperfe everything makes wo
You guys have a supporting The Hive see from your set? A
These shows will b ever played! We ar be farther away f before We love be are taking this opp sound! We are so in work and energy, so in their energy orbit
You’ll be on that tour during Halloween ... do you have your costumes picked out?
We are playing inside a tiny venue in Barcelona on Halloween We will most likely have to visit a costume shop in Spain before the show This is the most exciting thing ever for a costume lover

there is a lot of community support Politically, people have more to fight for in the South, and these DIY spaces are so important as they give people a platform who might not otherwise have

The night I went to see Jerskin Fendrix (aka Joscelin Dent-Pooley) return to The Windmill in Brixton, South London, on one of his two heavily sold-out nights there, American public persona and Trump affiliate Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at a rally in Utah, United States. As probably the only American present in the 150-capacity room that evening, I was shocked, and also somewhat pleased, to hear enthused whispers of “he’s actually dead!” reverberating through the back of the crowd in the midst of the set’s second half, following the night’s pre-planned 30-minute smoke break. This and all else considered, what I found that evening at The Windmill was uncanny, jubilant, home-y, and exactly what I had hoped for
As per Setlist.fm, Jerskin Fendrix regularly haunted The Windmill throughout 2017 and 2018, coinciding with Dent-Pooley’s era in London band Famous, and pre-dating the
arrival of his 2020 Jerskin Fendrix debut album, ‘Winterreise’ . It’s very possible that the venue’s charm has been lost on Dent-Pooley, and on most local attendees too, but on my first occasion seeing a show there as a starstruck, American Speedy Wunderground fan, I was captivated as if I had stepped into a movie set, a storied concert hall I’d only witnessed via shaky Instagram footage.
Tinsel party streamers hung loosely from the ceiling above Dent-Pooley’s head as he sat across a Baby Grand, and layers of posters from gigs forthcoming and long passed decorated the room around him a few I noticed advertised The Orchestra (For Now), Radio Free Alice, and Kate Clover The space was also absolutely not airconditioned (but why would it be?), lending to the crowd’s comfortable incubation and my need to continually blot my upper lip in between sips of my Estrella Galicia 0,0 Post-set, I met the
venue’s current-generation “Roof Dog”, who was given a special ‘Jerskin Fendrix 2025’ tennis ball to play with as a parting gift Each of my expectations were met, if not exceeded.
Beyond my personal joy at being at The Windmill, it was heartwarming to imagine how Dent-Pooley must have felt being there for those two nights, returning to a place he’d played so many times years before, now with the promise that the “big things” he had previously been striving for having already come true, thanks, in part, to his “lucrative side hustle” in film composition
“I’ll give you what you asked for so you feel as though you’ve got your money’s worth”, DentPooley laughed decently into the set, launching reluctantly into “Bella” , a memorable cut from his original score for the 2023 Yorgos Lanthimos film, ‘Poor Things’ (which earned him both Academy Award and Golden Globe nods, as well as a win for ‘Best Original Film Score’ at the Ivor Novello Awards in 2024)
What’s lost on those only aware of Dent-Pooley in the context of composition, however, is how individual, strikingly funny, and masterfully executed his solo musical work as Jerskin Fendrix truly is, as emphasized on the new album, ‘Once Upon A Time … in Shropshire’ (released October 10). Notably absent from his compositions, Dent-Pooley’s vocal range is undeniable, and hearing him perform live with the same ferocity as his recordings, despite the stripped-down nature of the show, magnified the wonder he evokes. As the set closed with his newest single “Together Again” , his easy grasp on quick-witted storytelling and vocal toneswitching shone particularly bright. Earlier, a cheeky cover of “Reflection” (from the 1998 Disney film ‘Mulan’) was somehow in perfectly good company thematically, met with hushed chuckles as the crowd imagined Dent-Pooley pining to be the “perfect daughter”.
From where I stood throughout the night wedged between a post, a group of trendy and inthe-know London music enjoyers, and a gaggle of the obvious film-nerds Dent-Pooley meant to
address earlier in the evening it simply made sense why these two shows were organized in the first place: to bring things full circle Returning to The Windmill helped connect DentPooley to his roots and allowed for a return to the way things used to be as does his new album, which pays homage to his upbringing in the West Midlands bordering Wales At The Windmill, Dent-Pooley’s newfound Hollywood recognition didn’t cease to exist, but it wasn’t the point of discussion, nor the purpose of attendance. Instead, he was allowed to just BE, and celebrate his growth in the most genuine way possible It was a beautiful moment, and one I felt honored to witness.

Fine Glindvad Jensen is a singer and producer, better known as Fine, who made her solo debut with 2024’s cool and drowsy ‘Rocky Top Ballads’
Astrid Sonne is a violist a nd the electro-pop star behind ‘Great Doubt’ , one of the best reviewed albums of 2024
Together they are many things: two friends brought together by Copenhagen’s Rhythmic Music Conservatory, two composers sharing influences, and two musicians embarking on a sonic partnership called Coined, the surprise leftfield pop collaboration that’s had fans of the two buzzing
Despite generating chat in recent years individually, Coined has been operating on a near-invisible level, with limited press and even fewer songs available to fans To date they have officially released “Your House” in the summer of 2024 as part of a compilation from South London imprint Scenic Route The single, an ethereal, pulsing, and beautiful debut, was

enough to make fans wonder what’s next Finally, nearly a year after the release, a Coined show in London was announced for April, a live debut 10 months after the duo’s first intro-duction
The show was a quick 45-minute display of clear complementary craft Both standing behind stands, the show started with a swell of synth, keyboards, and drums, with near-silence in between some of the songs Sonne occasionally walked around, playing her viola, with Fine splitting singing, keyboard, and synth duties Sonne eventually admitted
that the two had written most of the songs the last couple of weeks so that they would have enough for a show, but without this anecdote, the songs would appear so cohesive that the audience would be none the wiser
The duo of course ended with “Your House”, with Sonne sending us off by probing “I wonder, will you come pick me up
again?”, over the rhythm-focused production
And, much in the tradition of Coined, there’s hardly a trace of the show online, which is perhaps how it’s meant to be: a nice little secret that softly welcomes you upon discovery There’s no word on new music from Sonne any time soon, but given the last two busy years she’s this seems like a wellearned break Fine, on the other hand, is only gearing up, having just released new single, “Portal” , this summer, showcasing her strengths: slowburning, introspective, and languid palettes
With live dates upcoming in Europe, New York City, and Los Angeles this fall, perhaps we’ll be lucky enough to get more new Fine, either solo or as part of Coined

Stay tuned for more from Coined, coming soon.

Nourished by Time started making big waves 2 years ago, after dropping his infectious debut album, Erotic Probiotic 2. With that album, Marcus Elliot Brown, the face and mastermind behind the

act, began paving his own lane as a defining voice in Post-R&B. His following album, this year ’ s The Passionate Ones, sees Brown continuing down that path, forging a sound that’s an amalgam of R&B, punk, pop, hiphop, and electronic music, all funneled through his signature futuristic and DIY aesthetics. The record easily solidifies him as one of the most exciting emerging artists across genres right now, so, when he

announced that he’d be taking the stage at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on October 9, I knew I would need to be front and center.
Before I arrived at the show, Nourished by Time
felt like a cool secret that I with some close friends, tween the SOLD OUT and a line to get inside venue that wrapped long around the block, it was clear that he was no longer some small underground artist This proved to be even more true saw Louie Pastel and from the rap group Texas dart past me trying to figure out way inside Despite ly concluding a opening for Tyler, Creator, that night, duo were just like other fan trying

for the show to begin, the room filled with the chatter of fans debating their favorite songs and ideal setlists. I made friends with some folks in the photo pit who I figured may just be fulfilling an obligation to the best seat in the house

As we waited cover the show for a publication. On the contrary, everyone there agreed that his was far and away their favorite album of the year and they couldn’t wait for this show. Though I, too, agreed, I couldn’t help but shake the feeling I often have when seeing artists I love perform: Will this live up to what I’d fantasized it would be, or am I better off just listening to him at home?

Once Nourished by Time took the stage, all chatter disappeared and the room was filled by the chanting of the lyrics from his opening song, “Automatic Love” . The second he opened his mouth and began singing, I knew I had nothing to worry about. There is a confidence and bravado in Brown’s voice that absolutely commands your attention Additionally, he’d enlisted the help of his friends, Carrington and David, whose contributions as bandmates on this tour only bolstered the energy he brought to the stage This quickly flowed right into the next two songs, “Idiot in the Park” and “Shed That Fear” It felt as if he had no plans of giving the crowd a break, but it didn’t seem like the crowd wanted one either. Fans continued jumping, pushing against the barrier, and reciting lyrics as if they were scripture shared but besignage the

The stage presence Brown exudes is almost unlike any I’ve ever seen. He often dances around the stage, contorting his body in ways I didn’t even know were humanly possible, and the energy he creates is palpable to the point of being infectious If you ever plan on showing up to a Nourished by Time show in hopes of not moving your body at all, just know it’s a herculean task that I’m not sure anyone is capable of taking on The most obvious instance of this is when he performed the song “Crazy People” the song features an extended instrumental passage in the middle, with busy and hazy synths floating over drum hits that basically turned the room into a rave for a good few minutes It’s easy to admire Nourished by Time as a vocalist, but songs like this remind you just how fantastic he is as a producer too.
If dancing uncontrollably isn’t quite your speed, that’s no problem either His slow album cuts are just as enjoyable to experience live As he neared the end of his set, he began playing the opening notes of “When the War is Over” , a beautiful love song in which Brown professes his willingness to push through the difficulties of a relationship if this other person will simply love him His performance of this track was extremely resonant and he sung with such passion that it was hard not to feel somewhat emotional. As I looked at the crowd, fewer people were dancing and more were just slowly swaying I even saw a couple holding each other and slow dancing while sharing kisses.
Brown also made sure to have his fair share of engagement with the crowd He made a point to acknowledge this show as a bit of a homecoming for him, as Nourished by Time started in Los Angeles when Brown was living in an apartment in Koreatown. Though he found little success during his time here and “left in disgrace”, he says he’s grateful for the time he spent here and learned that you can’t expect a city to change the baggage you bring to it. However, being able to come back and perform a sold-out show here was truly a full-circle moment
The ending of his set same with “Hell of a Ride” and “The Passionate Ones” , two songs that lef
the crowd on an absolute high. The former is an anthemic, transcendent experience that features the most crowd involvement of the night You can tell this is the song many fans were waiting for all night long. The latter is a funky pop track with swirling synths, featuring falsetto vocals that sound like they’d comfortably live on a Prince record I wondered if Brown would have any trouble hitting those notes in a live setting, but he didn’t even skip a beat when it came time to belt them out. It’s hard to imagine going out on a higher note than this.

To conclude the show, the band left and everyone began cheering for them to come back to the stage. When they all returned, Brown took a moment to thank everyone for coming out to see him and then proceeded to say his bandmate, Carrington, would be performing one of his own songs to end the night It was a beautiful way to close things out, and another indicator of this full-circle moment for Brown he was back in the city that once failed him as an artist, but now, he is so established in the music industry that he’s able to give his friends a platform for their music via his own show.

It’s the first of June and Torna’s Tightrope Studios in Greenpoint, New York City is the afternoon’s backdrop for a brief photoshoot with Indianaborn indie rock 5-piece Wishy. In the insulated studio space, drummer Conner Host is in the midst of teaching vocalist/guitarist Nina Pritchkites how to properly wield a

set of drumsticks as guitarist Dimitri Morris sits in front of a wall of amplifiers at the opposite side of the room, taking his turn in front of Penny photographer Emma Hintz’ lens. Meanwhile, Mitch Collins (bass) and Kevin Krauter (vocals, guitar) speak with Torna opposite a well-equipped switchboard, as a pot of coffee bubbles and brews on the burner. Everyone’s slightly squished over the
next hour, but comfortable nonetheless; any pockets of air remaining in the space are filled with laughter, quiet chatter, and the intermittent stutter of Hintz’ flash.
In the last year since the release of Wishy’s debut album, Triple Seven (via Winspear), the group of five have gotten quite used to lingering afterimage, learning to pose for editorial photo features and chime in with the suitable-enough answers to questions from taste-making music blogs who can’t seem to stop seeking them out for comment It all makes sense, however, given the star-making quality of the band’s heartwarming brand of perfectly propulsive and

nonchalantly nostalgic tunes, capitalized with the Spring arrival of their 21-minute Planet Popstar EP. Comprising and giving new life to

bonus tracks that never made the August 2024 album, the EP’s 6 tracks are anything but discarded runts of the litter; instead, they’re strong enough to stand on their own Expanding on the former release’s exhibition of heartfelt ‘minivan rock’, it plays out like the A-side of a homemade cassette submerged in a time capsule dated at the early aughts, with side B fittingly rounded out with tracks of similar feeling from Avril Lavigne, Liz Phair, Throwing Muses, The Cure, and My Bloody Valentine. One can picture a faded Lisa Frank sticker or a hand-written memo beckoning one to ‘Play Me’, written in glittery gel pen, adorning the tape’s plastic casing.
Lyrically, the songs are as genuine as they come the feeling embedded in the tracks’ fleeting moments of full-
hearted yearning (“you’re the star in my dreams tonight”), bittersweet loss (“I’m just another one of your trips around the sun”), and acceptance of life’s small victories (“I found a way to be grateful every day”) don’t feel caricatured or trite, and that’s part of their magnetism There’s a level of closeness and enlightenment that can be derived from the diary entry-like quality of the words, and the interplay between fuzzed-out yet glossy shoegaze passages and blissfully strummed indie-pop melodies fleshes things out, evoking a feeling of home. More than anything else, the Planet Popstar EP is also an unapologetically fun and easy-going listen; as it whizzes by, it’s impossible to avoid wanting to replay ‘over and over’ again.
As a result of their infectiousness, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind for Wishy
(previously called Mana) since breaking onto the scene and spontaneously catching fire, as Nina Pritchkites recounts when we meet on the basement dance floor of Nightclub 101 on the Lower East Side later that day, ahead of her band’s headline show in the main room that evening
For one, the night prior to our chat, Wishy also closed out their run of dates supporting fellow indie-rock sweethearts
Momma with a sold-out show at Warsaw, the culmination of a few weeks playing some of the largest venues Wishy ever has.
Touring is a particular highlight for Pritchkites, too, with the last two years with Wishy allowing her to afford to do so for the first time in her musical career.

Thinking about her favorite moments from this period of time, Pritchkites fondly recounts days spent in the van with her bandmates over the last year in particular, listening to their collective favorite paranormal podcast Otherworld, or watching one of the boys’ anime fixations via a laptop (dangerously) propped up on the

ceiling; it’s like the Sistine Chapel”) Other notable locations include the Grand Canyon and the Four Corners where the southwestern corner of Colorado, southeastern corner of Utah, northeastern corner of Arizona, and northwestern corner of New Mexico meet.

queries and discover who you’re going to be. While it would be utterly human to let this unique astrological plane generate self-doubt and internal pressure, her perspective is decidedly much more hopeful and grounded to her, traversing this complicated, revelatory period while witnessing her band’s first real taste of triumph is even more validating of not only her personal choices, but of Wishy’s as a collective, too.

“In my head, when you’re first starting your career as an artist, you have to do way more grunt work before you enjoy the fruits of your labor,” Pritchkites

explained, referencing how her back has been hurting on long drives. “But I’ve always known our band was going to do bigger things. Like, not to toot my own horn, but we all just believe so much in our music, and that sounds corny, but when you do that, you go places”.
This also speaks to the welcome risks the band took with releasing the Planet Popstar EP, an opportunity to broaden their horizons and place a stamp on their early-days versatility. Such is made especially clear with one of Pritchkites’ inclusions, “Chaser” , a 90s bubblegumrock number decked out in syrupysweet, chugging guitar lines and decadent synth-laden reverb, amid an inner monologue of will-they won’t-they It’s a cut sonically unlike any other in Wishy’s catalog, and that’s perhaps why it fits so well among this specific collection of tracks it’s self-assured

“I’vealwayskindofknownourbandwasgoingtodobiggerthings. Like, nottotootmyownhorn, butwe alljustbelievesomuchinourmusic, andthatsounds corny, butwhen youdothat, yougoplaces” - Nina Pritchkites “I’vealwayskindofknownourbandwasgoingtodo biggerthings.Like, nottotootmyownhorn, butwe alljustbelievesomuchinourmusic, andthatsounds corny, butwhen youdothat, yougoplaces” -NinaPritchkites in its different-ness.
“I was kind of insecure about [that song] and I still feel shy about singing it”, Pritchkites admitted. “It was originally more of a ‘countrified’ pop song and Kev likened it to something Tom Petty would’ve written. But we started to make it poppier by messing with synthesizers and such”.
“I can definitely see why someone would say this EP is not cohesive maybe because of it, but I personally like that in music that I like listening to”, she continued. “Also, you can literally do whatever you want when you’re in a band I think a lot of people think they have to stick to one genre and stick to what they’ve already been doing, but that doesn’t sound very fun. I think of Alex G, and how he has such a diverse way of songwriting, such as sporadic pop moments with autotune. I just respect that a lot”
As made clear here, Wishy’s motto started and remains that of pure earnestness driven by friendship, creative curiosity, and an intrinsic desire to have fun, they create a listening experience without ego, and without expectation of their listeners or of themselves. Physically driven forward in their shared min-van, Wishy’s next pitstop might be the Biggest Ball of Twine (Cawker City, KS), a haunted location as shouted out on Otherworld, Planet Popstar itself (which Pritchkites notes would visually sit somewhere between Kirby’s Dream Land, the set for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and somewhere futuristic with ‘extremely green grass’), or the eventual ceremony inducting them into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame Either way, their destination will make perfect sense, and I can’t wait to hear about it

flipturn returned to Arizona on August 17th, lighting up Tucson’s Rialto Theatre with an electrifying performance that left the crowd breathless and longing for more. The show, part of the second leg of their ongoing Burnout Days Tour, felt like a love letter to their fans in the state’s second-largest city
While the Florida-grown five-piece indie rock band has put on multiple lively shows in Phoenix over the last few years (all of which I’ve had the pleasure of attending as a fan), frontman and lead vocalist Dillon Basse appreciatively noted that this show marked their first visit to Tucson. For a headlining debut in a new

city, they absolutely exceeded every expectation, drawing in an ecstatic crowd composed of every college-aged person in a 50-mile radius.
The appeal of their latest album, ‘Burnout Days’, comes from a place of urgency for those of us who are pushing through our own burnout days. It's up to you whether this urgency pushes you to dance your heart out or scream into a pillow. Regardless, flipturn’s entire discography is essential listening for everyone in their twenties, especially this new album. The highs and lows of navigating early adulthood are explored in the most sonically pleasing way
possible, leaving you feeling both validated and hopeful by the end of its 43-minute runtime. This feeling is only magnified when it comes to seeing the band perform live.
The show kicked off with the urgent rhythms of “Juno”, with Basse’s voice immediately rallying the seemingly soldout crowd and sending them into a fervent cycle of bouncing, cheering, and singing along to the lyrics. The titular track “Burnout Days” kept this energy going, peaking as Basse delivered the end of the final verse.
While tracks like “Inner Wave” and “Sad Disco” continued to show off the fiery energy that the band has become known for with their live performances, others like “Whales” and “Moon Rocks” allowed them to explore the softer, more explicitly emotional end of their range.
As the end of the hour-long set neared, the band received some of the loudest cheers of the night as the opening notes of “August” echoed throughout the entire theatre.
As quickly as their cheers erupted, the crowd fell silent as Basse delivered the first few lines of the beloved track: “August, honey, tasted sweeter with you.”
The collectively held breath in the room was released as the voices of the crowd soon blended with Basse’s, crying out the chorus of “August, honey, you were mine.”
It was a cathartic moment, the kind that leaves you feeling like a new person at the end of the night. And it’s one of the things I love most about

seeing flipturn perform live, as they never fail to deliver that feeling.
