November 26, 2023
After seven semesters of architecture studios, from early mornings to late nights and desk crits to real construction work, I’ve learned more than I ever thought possible, both about the field of architecture and myself. I’ve made incredible memories and had experiences that I believe have altered the course of my life, but none so much as getting the opportunity to build a real house during my Design-Build studio. I learned AutoCAD, which I would later use in my first internship. I constructed parts of the floor and walls using my own hands. I made dozens of phone calls to companies and personally managed to secure thousands of dollars worth of donated supplies. And I got to stand in front of a house as a third-year student and say that I helped build it. I’ve always suspected I wanted to do construction in some capacity, but working on Haven made me realize it’s possible.
With this incredible experience now under my belt, I intend to continue my design-build education in Studio 804 in my fifth year. I’m prepared and excited for the commitment this class requires, and I look forward to all of the knowledge I may gain through this experience. As of November 6th, I have been selected for the U.S. Navy’s Civil Engineering Corps Collegiate Program, which means following my graduation from the University of Kansas, I will attend Officer Candidate School and commission as an officer in the U.S. Navy, where I will be in charge of managing the Navy’s construction projects and directly supervising Seabees, the Navy’s construction force. Of the fifth-year options, Studio 804 will best prepare me for this future career by granting me opportunities to lead and gain experience on a real construction project.
Thank you for your consideration,
Erin McMahon
