Dear Patron of the Arts,

Welcome to The Sharon L. Morse Performing Arts Center!

This year marks a very special milestone—10 years since The Sharon first opened its doors. What began in 2015 as a bold dream has grown into a vibrant home for live performance, rooted in the adventurous and artistic spirit of my grandmother, Sharon L. Morse.

MAESTRO

PASQUALE VALERIO, MAESTRO

Pasquale Valerio is an internationally acclaimed Orchestral Conductor. In 2004 he founded The Villages Philharmonic Orchestra, became its musical director, and is still engaged in concerts and tours throughout Florida and worldwide. Maestro Valerio was also the founder of the Lake Sumter Chamber Orchestra as well as co-founder and conductor of the Florida Lakes Symphony from 2005 to 2006.

He collaborates with various European orchestras such as the Philharmonic Orchestra ‘900 of the Teatro Regio Opera in Turin, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Prague, the Virtuosi of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, the Virtuosi of the Philharmonic of Bacau, the “A. Scarlatti” Symphony Orchestra of Naples, Orchestra Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.

In 2006 had the opportunity to assist Sir Antonio Pappano, current Music Director of the Royal Opera House in London This collaboration represented a great point of reference for maestro Valerio and indelibly marked his experience of conducting growth. From 2007 to 2009 he collaborated with the internationally known Viotti music festival in Vercelli, Italy and in May 2018 he began an ongoing cooperation with the North California Music Festival as guest conductor.

Pasquale Valerio was born in Naples to a family linked to cultural traditions and founding religious values. The great passion for music was evident from the first years of his life, but, only towards the tenth year of age did he begin his musical studies, first with the piano, and subsequently, at the age of thirteen years, when he began studying trumpet. It is in this period that Pasquale met Maestro Filippo Veniero, an important musical guide for subsequent studies. He studied trumpet at the school of Maestro Francesco Lentini, Bari Conservatory, with whom he obtained the middle completion and, subsequently under the guidance of Maestro Diego Benedusi, he obtained the superior completion of trumpet.

After completing his trumpet studies, he collaborated as an instrumentalist with orchestras of major opera and symphonic institutions including the Opera House “Teatro di San Carlo in Naples “and with other major opera orchestras and symphonic institutions. Simultaneously he studied Composition and Score Reading at the School of Maestro Filippo Veniero.

The meeting with two conductors, J Withney and Gunther Smidth (United States) conditioned the musical journey and made it possible that in 1998 Pasquale resumed his studies started in Naples with F. Veniero. Also important was the meeting with the famous conductor Anton Coppola in 1999, who became Pasquale’s mentor and guide. Pasquale is a guest collaborator at festivals and international competitions, including: International Piano Competition “F. Schubert” in San Cristoforo Virtuosi of the Bacau Philharmonic, Romania, Viotti Music Festival, Camerata Ducale, Italy, Piano Festival of Carrara/Arezzo

Orchestra 900’ of the Teatro Regio of Turin, Oída Symphony Orchestra (Arezzo) Philharmonic Orchestra of Benevento, New Orchestra Scarlatti and Florida Philharmonia

In the academic year 2023 he was appointed Visiting Professor of Conducting Studies at the “London Performing Arts Academy” and at the end of 2023, appointed Honor Roll of “ALTAMURA MERCADANTE FEST”.

PROGRAM NOTE

Program note from Dr. Lorenzo Fiorito, an internationally renowned musicologist...

JOAQUÍN RODRIGO CONCIERTO DE ARANJUEZ

Composed in 1939, the Concierto de Aranjuez is Joaquín Rodrigo’s most celebrated work and one of the most significant guitar concertos of the twentieth century. Written in Paris shortly after the end of the Spanish Civil War, the concerto received its first performance in Barcelona in 1940 and soon secured a permanent place in the international repertoire. With this work, Rodrigo brought the guitar - an instrument deeply rooted in Spanish cultural identity - into the symphonic concert hall with unprecedented authority and artistic legitimacy.

Rather than using the concerto as a vehicle for virtuoso display, he conceived it as a balanced dialogue between soloist and orchestra. The guitar maintains a clear, intimate voice, while the orchestra provides contrast, expansion, and architectural support. This conception reflects a modern approach to the concerto genre, emphasizing interaction and equilibrium over competition.

The title refers to the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, a spring residence of King Philip II later rebuilt under Ferdinand VI. Its mid-eighteenth-century gardens long represented, in Spanish cultural memory, an ideal balance between nature, architecture, and courtly life. For Rodrigo, Aranjuez functioned not as a narrative setting but as a symbolic reference point. Rather than offering a literal musical description, the concerto evokes an abstract image of order, symmetry, and suspended time, translated into musical proportion and restraint.

The opening movement, Allegro con spirito, is marked by strong rhythmic energy and incisive articulation. Its driving pulse and accent patterns recall Spanish dance traditions, particularly those associated with Andalusian practice. From the outset, the movement establishes a tension between rhythmic vitality and formal discipline. The guitar engages continuously with the orchestra, maintaining a distinct solo identity without dominating the overall texture. The result is a movement of pronounced character, firmly grounded in Spanish rhythmic idioms yet shaped by classical formal clarity.

The Adagio that follows forms the expressive core of the Concierto de Aranjuez and is among the most recognizable movements in the orchestral repertoire. A broad, lyrical theme unfolds within an atmosphere of restraint and concentration, supported by a discreet and finely calibrated orchestral accompaniment. Rodrigo associated this movement with impressions of the gardens of Aranjuez, evoking stillness, flowing water, and contemplative calm rather than explicit narrative imagery.

During the period of composition, Rodrigo and his wife experienced the loss of their first child through miscarriage, a circumstance often cited by biographers as part of the emotional background of the work, though never explicitly acknowledged by the composer. Critical reception has frequently interpreted the movement as a process

PROGRAM NOTE

of emotional transformation, in which tension and suffering are gradually absorbed into calm and equilibrium. Formally, the movement unfolds as an extended dialogue between guitar and orchestra, culminating in a powerful orchestral climax before returning to extreme simplicity and expressive control.

The final section, Allegro gentile, restores motion and lightness. Its dance-like character is shaped by the alternation of binary and ternary rhythmic groupings, producing an elegant and flexible sense of flow. Courtly refinement and popular inflection coexist without emphasis on virtuosic brilliance. The movement concludes the concerto with clarity and poise, reaffirming the work’s overall aesthetic of balance and measured expressivity.

The Concierto de Aranjuez represents a turning point not only in Rodrigo’s career but also in the history of the guitar, redefining its role within orchestral writing. Its enduring success lies in its ability to reconcile national identity with universal appeal, formal rigor with immediacy of expression. Today, it remains a powerful symbol of Spanish musical culture, speaking with clarity and emotional depth to audiences worldwide.
