PGA of America

The PGA of America is made up of more than 30,000 PGA of America Golf Professionals who love the game, are expert coaches, operators and business leaders, and work daily to drive interest, participation and inclusion in the sport. (pga.com)

How did the PGA of America get its start? At lunch, of course.

The Professional Golfer’s Association of America was originally conceived in January 1916 in New York City. A group of New York-area golf professionals and prominent amateur golfers, including the likes of five-time PGA Champion Walter Hagen, 1913 U.S. Open Champion Francis Ouimet, and famed course architect A.W. Tillinghast, attended a luncheon hosted by department store magnate Rodman Wanamaker at the ninth-floor restaurant of the Wanamaker Store in New York City.

Tom McNamara, a former caddie turned accomplished golfer turned talented salesman for Wanamaker – and someone who cared about the welfare of the club professional – provided the spark toward organization. He pressed upon Wanamaker that it was prime time to bring U.S. professionals together, and that the publicity would be advantageous. Locked into a retail battle with rival A.G. Spalding & Bros. for the sale of golf balls, Wanamaker enthusiastically approved the initiative.

The luncheon agenda addressed giving golf professionals a say when it came to the organization and staging of tournaments, among other employment issues. The response to creating such a body was positive, and additional meetings followed. On April 10, 1916, in the second-floor boardroom of the Hotel Martinique on 32nd and Broadway, the Professional Golfers’ Association of America was established. There were 78 members elected that day, including 35 PGA Charter Members.

The Association began with seven PGA Sections: Metropolitan, Middle States, New England, Southeastern, Central, Northwestern and Pacific. The PGA of America, destined for a century of excellence, had begun. (pga.com)

Jax Chamber

The JAX Chamber is a business organization representing more than 3,000 businesses serving Northeast Florida, helping members to make connections, grow their businesses and prosper in our community.

The Board of Trade was established on January 30, 1884, mainly to promote the dredging of the St. Johns River and to create the jetties. The name was changed to the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce in 1915, then to Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2005 and finally to JAX Chamber in 2013. The mission today for our 3,000 members is the same as in the early Board of Trade days – create and promote a business-friendly environment and a thriving economy where everyone in our community has the opportunity to succeed.

The Chamber created Believers in Jacksonville in 1923, becoming the first Chamber in the country to actively recruit businesses to its city. Today, JAXUSA Partnership, the seven-county regional economic development division of the Chamber, works to attract jobs and investment to our region.

The Chamber has had both a front-row seat and a behind-the-scenes impact on many of the key events in Jacksonville for more than a century. Landing an NFL franchise. Construction of the Northbank and Southbank Riverwalks downtown. Creating the Jacksonville Women’s Business Center. Forming the Lewis and White Business League to improve economic opportunities for African Americans in Jacksonville.

In 2016, the JAX Chamber was one of four national finalists for the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives Chamber of the Year Award. The Chamber’s strength lies in our business leaders coming together to make a difference and investing time to improve our city.
