Current Studio - Critical Ecologies

The studio is based on the book, ‘Ecocriticisms in Japan,’ where a chapter is selected, dissected, and interpreted into a provocative project that aims to raise questions of ecological conditions in Japan. In my chapter “Radioactive Discourse and Atomic Bomb Texts,” Kyoko Matsunaga outlines the devastating impact of the 1945 atomic bomb’s radiation and the government’s neglect in helping its citizens. He speaks on the relevance today, with the Fukushima disaster of 2011 and the subsequent nuclear waste release into the Pacific Ocean. The continual contamination of Japan’s hydrosphere is leaving bodies of water perpetually infected. AQUALINE interrupts this continual demise by introducing a space of aquatic exploration and restoration between two cultural hubs < Tokyo Disney and Haneda Airport > aimed at repairing and redeveloping a connection to a culture and a city that has turned its back on water.

AQUALINE floats in the bay, filtering, cleaning, and processing the contaminated water that surrounds it, using the water to activate the series of programs that exist within it. The project introduces programs that are now unattainable in a natural environment due to the continued pollution of aquatic systems. AQUALINE, while entertaining and educating the public, generates power through the movements of the building’s floating condition, while pumping clean water back into the bay, slowly repairing the environment that caused its formation initially. The dialectic of ‘purified’ and ‘contaminated’ is exemplified by the graphic depiction of ‘blue’ and ‘red’ respectively and in the condition in which the liquid is contained or not contained.

HERCULES BUILDING

Masters Year Two - Comprehensive Studio

Professor Kelly Carlson-Reddig

Fall 2023

Partnered with Ben Simmons

The Hercules building is an adaptive re-use office and retail project located in the site of Camp North End, Charlotte. The design aims to connect and circulate users from site to park to retail and to office all in a continuation of path. Retail spaces function as insertions into removed existing trusses along bays creating adjacent courtyards for light and use for the office space below. The topography of the site is such that a series of ramps and bridges are used to connect to site foraging passage to these retail spaces, with the focal point of the project being a bookstore/library space. The introduction of a mass timber structure creates a juxtaposition between the new and old as well as a sustainable solution to the building. The mass timber structure operates independently from the existing structure allowing the floor to rest in between the green, park roof and office, manipulating the spacial condition below and allowing for experiential ramps to connect the three spaces (park-retail-office). The ground floor interior is an expression of the circulation in an open office concept that allows for flexibility.

PINEWOOD CREMATORIUM

Masters Year One - Topical Studio Professor Betsy Ross Fall 2022

Mourning a loved one requires a process of grieving that exists in stages. The Pinewood Crematorium exists within this process, while architecturally creating a procession of its own towards closure. Each cylindrical space houses a different experience suited toward its program, creating serenity, intimacy and meditation. The two main entries connect you to parts of the existing cemetery, representing two stages of the mourning process. Each of the cylindrical spaces creates a varying experience through the use of light and shadows. Hierarchy is created in volume and in lighting condition, as back of house operations resides on a separate axial relationship. The columbariam outdoor space is embedded into the landscape and the urns rest in the a side of the wall facing the long central bench. The large ramp brings one to the backside of the bench as to not disrupt the mourning process for those viewing the urns. The barrels are peeled away and into in order to allow one from room to room. Gardens rest in strategic locations as to allow views from individual rooms out.

IFAKARA SECONDARY SCHOOL

Masters Year One - Protective Atmospheres

Spring 2023

This project aims to create a lower secondary school for residents in the rural Ifakara, Tanzania, Ifakara is a developing area facing warm, hot-humid days with little resources and unskilled labor. The design looks to mitigate these issues while creating variable classroom spacial conditions. Beginning at the brick scale, the design allows for air to permeate through the brick system, allowing for airflow into the class rooms. The building is oriented perpendicular to the prevailing winds in Ifakara to maximize this airflow. The volumes are pulled apart and staggered to promote airflow and create voids of breakout space for covered outdoor classrooms. The brick design is implemented on the walls perpendicular to the airflow while load bearing brick is utilized perpendicular to that. This creates a rigid structural system while still creating flow through these spaces.

GOWANUS OFFICE BUILDING

Undergrad Year Three - Introduction Urban Context

Professor Julie Poe Wilkerson

Fall 2019

Partnered with Alyssa Halloran

The project asked to design a coworking office space located on a site in the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, NY. The superfund site borders a canal filled with thick oil runoff from adjacent manufacturing buildings. The apparent contradiction of oil and water inspired the design, as the building embodies a solid/void interaction through the volumes that interject into the glass body. Public space fills the open glass void as it is punctured by the solid office and library volumes creating a experiential condition marked by intersection and contradiction. The solid volumes are clad by terracotta resembling the brick manufacturing buildings around the site. The volumes float and undulate varying the public and office experience on the interior while the cladding is carved to allow light and balconies for the office and library users.
