Quality Out of School Time/Afterschool programs can support the state and local efforts to help boost attendance, well-being, and help mitigate learning loss. Out of School Time programs provide long term impact on academic achievement. KO students scored 3-7% higher than the district average of their respective grade and 10-15% higher in several subject areas, including math, language arts, and reading. The KO afterschool program aims to accomplish this by providing a healthy snack, homework help, and social and emotional learning lessons in addition to the 50minute music lesson.

My children have grown in both skill and confidence. They are able to transfer their learning to both school and other extracurricular activities. The foundations that my children have received have provided advantages for them learning other instruments, as well. In addition to KO performances, the kids have also ministered for several events at their church. One of my children recently qualified for the stated Talented program for violin, piano, and voice. We count ourselves blessed to be connected to the KO program and look forward to continuing our growth through its amazing teachers!

for enabling us to bring private lessons to the community

Summer Camp

In addition to public schools, Kids' Orchestra also serves as content providers for other charter schools and community organizations who serve the ALICE population. This expansion allows us to reach a broader customer base and provide our teaching artists with more work opportunities

Kids' Orchestra Summer Camp returned for the first time in 4 years! 18 Kids' Orchestra students attended our summer camp at The Dufrocq School over two weeks. Programming consisted of music lessons, arts activities, drum circles, and educational field trips.

KO Partnerships

East Baton Rouge Parish Library

Kids' Orchestra partnered with the East Baton Rouge Library to highlight hidden musical treasures in the EBRPL's children's collection while introducing the community to music education. In each lesson, a featured book was paired with a game, a dance, singing, and a hands-on activity. Basic music education skills like rhythm, melody, and instrument recognition were utilized to help connect music with books.

Knock Knock Children's Museum

Kids' Orchestra's ongoing concert series with the Knock Knock Children's Museum creates performance opportunities for students and their teachers. KO brings music into the museum and exposes kids of different ages to music education and advocates for arts appreciation. After the performances, our students have a great time exploring the museum.

Our students were given an amazing opportunity to perform with the LSU Symphonic Band under the direction of Dr. Kelvin Jones. They performed two selections which they prepared with their Kids' Orchestra teachers in the months leading up and put on a fantastic concert with only one rehearsal with the Symphonic Band.

Jody's 10th Anniversary with Kids' Orchestra

This year marks a milestone anniversary for Kids’ Orchestra. Our Executive Director, Jody Hanet, celebrated 10 years of conducting, directing, and bringing music into the lives of children in our community who would not otherwise experience the life-changing benefits of music education. As you know, a decade of service in any non-profit is a heroic commitment.

Thank you to the generous gift from Kathy and Ed Baker who hosted a fabulous reception in their home to honor Jody which featured entertainment by some of our teaching artists.

15

“Sometimes they practice right after lessons. I like that. Their minds are focused on the music and the notes. I’ve seen that this is a takeaway from their work in lessons and work at school. They are excited to keep practicing. I think I see and hear that they are growing and growing. I talk about music with them when we hear orchestra music. They hear music that inspires them now, so they have more ways to grow and make music.”

-Esmerelda and Mario Lorenzo, KO parents
