JUNIOR YEAR / FALL SEMESTER / 3 WEEK PROJECT
This bookstore located near the heart of downtown Champaign, Illinois makes the most out of a uniquely slender site condition with rotating cantilevered extrusions exploding from the surrounding context that mimic a stack of books. The large glazed facade is protected by horizontal louvers that increase heat efficiency and hint at the bookshelves inside the building.
Each rotated section has a lightwell surrounded by bookshelves that allows visitors to look down from the upper floors and doubles as a bench with an excellent view of Champaign’s train station. This along with a cafe and seating area on the first floor gives the building’s visitors a place to sit, relax, and read their books.
JUNIOR YEAR / FALL SEMESTER / 7 WEEK PROJECT
For this project we were tasked with designing a performance hall on the corner of W Jackson Blvd and S Green St in Chicago. Since the site was on the edge of Greektown, I took inspiration from classical Greek amphitheaters and odeons in my design. I used the radial seating that these theaters were known for to dictate both the form and structure of my building, with an arcade of columns and arches that support the theater above. This radial scheme is constrained within the rectangular boundary of the site and only breaks at the entrance and ticket booth to emphasize the corner location. This attractive landmark serves to welcome visitors into this culturally rich neighborhood.
SOPHMORE YEAR / FALL SEMESTER / 8 WEEK PROJECT
My Sophomore year fall semester studio focused on the ISoA annex, in which we spent half a semester analyzing and drafting various drawings and models of the building. The other half we designed an intervention that would be added to the already existing building. I chose to overhaul the building into the dream architecture studio, complete with an architectural supply store, cafe, printing lab, lecture hall, study rooms, and a grand studio space with lots of walls for pin-ups. This project was completed entirely in Revit.
