PROJECT CONCEPT

The decline of the Westlake neighborhood was primarily caused by the expansion of the city of Los Angeles and the city’s wealthiest residents to move west. Coinciding with the city’s lack of investment and deferred maintenance into the community, it eventually led to a densely packed neighborhood of immigrants who couldn’t afford other parts of Los Angeles.

Located on S Alvarado Street and Wilshire Boulevard, the project sits on a corner lot. The project site faces directly across MacArthur Park where high foot traffic occurs. The Westlake community supports each other through their street vendors and social gatherings that occur near the project site.

This project proposes a mixed-use building with a library/ media tech on its ground floor to offer its residents and locals alike access to education and the opportunity to further explore their interests. With only twenty-seven percent of Westlake residents completing their Bachelor’s degree, it would benefit the community by providing more access to educational resources. The desperate need for affordable housing is also evident in this neighborhood. The proposal for affordable housing is made in this project, consisting of micro units, studio units, one bedroom units, and two bedroom units. The project will emphasize the values of a community, which will be explored through the use of atrium spaces and courtyards.

PROJECT CONCEPT

In this project, our proposal for a tsunami evacuation tower is located in Laie, Hawaii, in which it lies adjacent to Brigham Young University (BYU), a residential neighorborhood, and the Polynesian Cultural Center, which attracts many tourists every year. This project is motivated to bring together a community between the students, the locals, and the visitors. The goal for the building was to connect individuals to the building which formed programs such as a sculpture garden, farmers’ market, auditorium, multi-purpose room intended for the visual and performing arts, and an observation deck. Each of these programs goes back to our main idea of using this building as a way to connect all different kinds of people, whether that be a student, resident, or tourist.

PROJECT CONCEPT

Sans Serif is a digital design project that is purposed to engage students in creating complex forms beginning with the use of letters in the Sans Serif font. Students compose several letters to come up with 2-D drawings and utilize different techniques to create a 3-D physical model. In the process of designing a 3-D model, individuals are tasked to implement stairs into their model as a way to thinking spatially. In addition to the digital aspect of the course, an augmented reality app specifically for the course is supplemented with the project to fully understand and move around the project.
