From incredible skylines to packed dim sum restaurants and the famous Symphony of Lights show, Hong Kong is known as Asia’s most lovable city. Cantonese is the local language, however, both english and cantonese are the official languages in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is famous for many things - its unique heritage, its food, its sightseeing places and perhaps known as a paradise for shoppers. Moreover, beneath Hong Kong’s modern skyscrapers lies a surpisingly kid-friendly destination.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO: The best time to visit Hong Kong is during autumn, from October to early December, when the weather is sunny, cool and pleasant. This is because during spring its cloudy, during summer its hot and humid and during winter its windy.

MONEY: The Hong Kong dollar is the official currency of Hong Kong. You will be able to find money changers at the airport terminal from the moment you land. The Hong Kong dollar is pegged with the US dollar at HK $7.8 per US dollar.

transportation transportation TRAM: All Tram routes pass through the city center (Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai or Causeway Bay) However, trams generally travel at a slower pace than other transporations.

One-way fares cost HK $2 regardless of distance travelled.

Most trams run every 2-4 minutes from 06:00 am till 12:00 am.

FERRY: Ferries are a popular option to travel between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

Ferry fares starts from HK $1.70.

Most ferries run from 06:00 am till 23:30 pm.

MTR:

Most trains run every 2-4 minutes from 06:00 am till 01:00 am.

BUS: Bus routes cover almost all areas of Hong Kong, except outlying islands.

Major public transport to travel to the southern side of Hong Kong Island such as Ocean Park and Repulse Bay. Bus fare starts from HK $3.

Most buses start from 06:00 am till 12:00 am.

tips: 1. Bring exact change if you are not paying by octopus card as they won’t provide any change.

2. The system map is available on the MTR website and app, which is useful for planning routes and seeking venues near stations.

The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is a very convenient way of travelling throughout the city. There are over 80 stations which connects Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and Lantau Island.

arriving arriving THE FASTEST WAY TO GET TO THE CITY: Airport Express is the most comfortable, quickest and most direct way the city. The train service will have you at the Kowloon Station in just 20 minutes (HK $90 per adult and HK $45 per child). Families of up to 4 people can buy a group pass for HK $220 to Kowloon station or HK $250 to Hong Kong station.

OPERATION HOURS: The train runs every 10 minutes from 05:30 am to 01:15 am.

SIM CARD: It is recommended to buy tourist sim card as it is essential while travelling in Hong Kong. 8-day pass 5GB for HK $118 or 5-day pass 1.5GB for HK $88.

You can purchase these from the airport stalls, 7eleven, HK Tourism Board and Circle K.

TIPS: Check with your hotel if your hotel is included in the Airport Express free shuttle service. They may offer independent pick-up and drop-off services at either Hong Kong or Kowloon Station.

It is a great and fun place for kids of all ages, there are many things to do that will keep everyone happy and entertained. From ferry rides, thrilling rollercoasters, delicious foods, going back in time at the history museum, sightsee from famous tourist attractions and much more to go! Travelling to Hong Kong with kids can be quite a challenge, therefore, this guide book provides our pick of top things to do with kids in Hong Kong that is kid-friendly and enjoyable.

Don’t overpack or don’t panic if you forgot to packs something. Remember that almost everything (baby food, formula, diapers) can be found in Hong Kong’s chemists and grocery stores.

BRING A BABY CARRIER INSTEAD Instead of bringing a baby stroller, bring a baby carrier as Hong Kong is not a stroller friendly place.

SCIENCE MUSEUM science museum

Hong Kong Science Museum is one of the major museums in Hong Kong that is great for kids. It features about 500 exhibits located on 4 floors. Over 70 percent of the Science Museum’s 500 exhibits are interactive and hands-on, which kids can learn and enjoy from. Young visitors will love te robotics, virtual reality and transportation displays. One of the highlights in the museum is the 22-meter Energy Machine (the largest of its kind in the world) with audio-visual effects simulating energy, which kids will absolutely love it.

HISTORY MUSEUM HISTORY museum

Right next to Hong Kong Science Museum is Hong Kong Museum of History exhibits over 90,000 items showcasing 400 million years of Hong Kong’s history.

It is founded to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of China. Kids will be glued to the many diorama displays - you can peer inside a fishing junk, see what Kowloon Walled City looked like before it became a park, see the backstage of a Chinese opera and walk down a re-created street of old Hong Kong. The museum is a very family friendly and informative museum. The museum also has a simple but good cafe with plenty of kid-friendly choices like hot dogs and noodles.

‘The Peak’ is a must see attraction in Hong Kong and it offers an incredible view of the Hong Kong city skyline. To go up to The Peak, hop on board the vintage peak tram which regularly runs up and down from 7 in the morning till midnight. Another famous attraction called Madame Tussauds Wax Museum is located here too, which can be interesting to kids. Moreover, there’s a little kids’ playground around the middle of the Peak Galleria if they need a break.

Another of the Hong Kong attractions for kids is The Hong Kong Observation Wheel provides 20 minutes of fun for both children and adults. The wheel spins around three times and provides excellent views over Victoria Harbour, Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. The wheel has 42 luxurious gondolas that comfortably seat eight passengers. It is a smooth and relaxing journey around so even those who feel uneasy with heights should get used to the experience, which is perfect for kids.

Victoria Harbour is one of Hong Kong’s most famous attractions. By day, you you and your kids can stroll around and take pictures at the Avenue of Stars, which is an attraction that pays tribute to some of the region’s most celebrated names in the movie industry or hop on the cheap Star Ferry or red-sail junk boat to cross over to Hong Kong Island with a waterway view. At 8pm every night, the free ‘Symphony of Light’ show draws in the crowds as a whole host of buildings on the island side light up and lasers shower the city in light.

OPENING HOURS: Victoria Harbour & Avenue of Stars: Everyday- 24 hours HOW TO GET THERE: 1. Take MTR to East Tsim Sha Tsui Station and walk to Exit L6.

RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. Sit on the upper deck of the Star Ferry to avoid inhaling coal fume.

2. To get a good spot during the Symphony of Lights show, you will need to get there early.

Hong Kong is an intense, noisy and busy city and when you’re travelling with young kids, you need to find some respite. Hong Kong Park covers an area of 8.6 hectares and at the center of the park, visitors can see an artificial lake and waterfall. The facilities include: Children’s playground, clock tower, central garden, tai chi garden, olympic square and sports center. It is also the perfect choice of where to go in Hong Kong with kids if you are looking for a chance for your kids to run around and also a great place to escape from the busy inner city.
