Beaver Municipal Solutions (BMS) is taking action to respond to community concerns through a new ‘Response

to Consultation’ report released on Monday, Feb. 10.

The report follows a series of public information sessions held across the Beaver region last fall about the proposal to transition BMS to a mu-

nicipally-controlled corporation (MCC) under the operating name of Claystone Waste.

Tofield School has introduced new courses to give students a hands-on opportunity for the various career options that might be available.

Speaking to this Principal Janice Muench said, “We are very excited to be able to continually respond to student voice and parent feedback in order to add meaningful programming at Tofield School.”

In late May/early June, students select their core courses and their options for the following school year, and adjustments are often made in course streams and in elective choices as students decide where they believe their interests and skill sets lie.

“If low interest/enrolment does not allow us to

offer the choice as a course, we still find ways to offer some form of this identified interest in either home room focus, Titan Time or W.I.N. (What I Need Time),” Muench explained. “Our hope is to continue to take in feedback from students and parents about the elective classes that assist students in thinking about their interests and potentially what they may want to pursue after they graduate from the high school.”

SNOW GOOSE FESTIVAL 2020 The Beaverhill Lake Snow Goose Festival returns April 25-26, 2020 in Tofield.

This event will celebrate the the spring migration through Beaverhill Lake. partnering organizations have been meeting since last May to bring back this celebration with the common goal of providing all festival participants with a heightened appreciation of spring migration, and gain an awareness of waterfowl conservation

and management.

Planning for such an event involves a number of people and organizations – and as noted, planning for this event has been going on for several months.

Our partners include Nature Alberta, Nature Conservancy of Canada, Ducks Unimited, North American Waterfowl Management Plan Partnership, Edmonton Nature Club, Alberta Conservation Association,

Alberta Environment and Parks, Canadian Wildlife Service, Beaverhill Bird Observatory, Beaver County, Strathcona County, Beaver Hills Biosphere, Town of Tofield, and Tofield Mercury among others.

Tours and events are scheduled throughout this twoday event, and include a series of bus and walking tours (lead by experienced naturalists), a wildlife trade show, evening banquet with

speakers, and more. The ‘headquarters’ for the event will be the Tofield Curling Rink, with tour departure from the adjacent grounds to destinations at the south end of Beaverhill Lake and areas in Beaver County.

With our expectation of welcoming around 4,000 participaants over the weekend, volunteers will be needed to to assist with everything from parking, to registration to setup and more!

Staff have also thought about offering classes in their areas of expertise, such as Horticulture, Organic Farming, Auto Detailing and Furniture Restoration, among other course ideas that have been generated.”

It’s a collaboration and a work in progress for Muench as positive changes are incorporated and feedback and criticism received for future projects.

The Special Projects students have been considering offering an ‘adulting’ showcase for one of their Titan Time initiatives later this year.

“This would invite community members and staff into our ‘adulting’ showcase to teach students ‘meaningful life lessons/skills’ that will assist them in life well after high school,”

Muench noted.

Some of the ideas generated were as follows – How to finance large purchases-cars/trucks/trailers; Car/Truck Care (changing a tire, oil changes, general maintenance); Managing a monthly budget; Banking/Budgeting 101; Meal Prep; Basic 'living on your own skills...like laundry, basic sewing, safety, first aid'; Interview Skills; Renting/Buying a home; Applying for loans and scholarships; Costs of raising a family; and other need-to-know skills.

“We know that budget conditions require that we think about how we can all band together to ensure that our schools remain vibrant and our communities remain strong,” she said. “We value public consultation and feedback, and continue to make changes to our programming initiatives based on the valuable, respectful feedback that we receive.”

Loose Ends: End of the trail

You know how when you’ve lived with something for so many years that you don’t really see it

anymore, until one day you do a double take because it suddenly looks different? So you squint and stare to get a better look and say huh, how long has that been there?

Well, in my case the thing I see (and walk on several times) every day is the hall carpet and the difference is a dark path along the full length of the hall from kitchen to linen cupboard where it takes a sharp left into the bedroom, and across to

the little room that every snobby decorator and builder on HGTV would refuse to call a bathroom, maybe a half bath or a powder room, but which suits our purposes perfectly.

Actually, I knew when it began, during that preknee-surgery period when I was doing the Granny shuffle and taking baby steps, the soles of my feet seldom leaving the ground. And then more of the same

post-surgery, plus my walker.

Maybe a total of two or three years of dragging my feet had created a track on our light tan and gray mottled Berber. I call my snail trail because it reminds me of something a snail would leave behind if it made as many trips to the bathroom as I do. A very large snail.

Lucky it isn’t slimy or sticky, just grungy-looking.

Well, it’s gone now.

Swept away with soapy water and a double rinsing. We had orders not to walk on it for two hours which I forgot the first time my bladder called. I was halfway down the hall when I suddenly remembered – I’m not supposed to be here! I felt trapped, like I’d painted myself into a corner. Do I keep going or turn back?

Well since I’ve come this far. . . .

That was yesterday and even though I can

pick up my feet like a normal person I still hesitate to walk on it. I don’t want to start a new trail.

But I’ll quickly tire of tippy-toeing down the hall. I’m tempted to cover it with old sheets or a tarp from the trailer. If only I could leap long hallways in a single bound. Or swing past on my Spidey web. Or grow wings. Wait…was that a bell I heard? Maybe I’m getting my wings a little early.

Tofield RCMP interevenes in Ryley family disturbance Cpl. Sheryl Cody Tofield RCMP

The Tofield RCMP responded to a total of 32 calls for service last week, four of which were traffic collisions.

On Monday, Feb. 10, Tofield RCMP were dispatched to a residence on Beaverhill Drive in response to suspicious people looking to break into the house. Members attended and did not find

any evidence of a break in. The male at the residence was advised.

On Thursday, Feb. 13, members were dispatched to a family disturbance in the town of Ryley. The parties involved were separated and sent home. No further complaints received.

During the early morning hours of Friday, Feb. 14, members were called out to a family disturbance on 54 Ave. & 51 St. in Tofield. An intoxicated male in the house damaged the inside and threatened to burn the house down. Police attended but the male had fled the scene. This investigation is ongoing.

14 near Ryley on Feb. 14 at 0913 hrs. The road conditions were extremely icy at the time. The lone female occupant was transported to Tofield Hospital with minor injuries.

On Sunday, Feb. 16, there was a break and enter to Ryalta Industries

in Ryley, Alberta. The break-and-enter happened around 0530 hrs but was not reported until later in the day. Access was gained by ramming a pickup into the rear bay doors. There appears to be three males involved; all three were wearing masks and

gloves. There was surveillance on scene, this file is still under investigation.

With plummeting temepratures, Tofield RCMP are cautioning motorists and drivers to drive safely, and according to changing road conditions.

PM created the Canadian Climate Change Cult

The days of playing nice have to end. It is time the laws of the land take over and arrest the criminal Canadian Climate Change Cult members who have been ruining our legal economy for years.

Why do I call them a cult? They behave much like one. Cults have an object of worship. With these people it is the environment . . . and celebrity talking heads . . . and Greta.

Cults have an indoctrination. The Climate Change Cult has been fed misinformation that could be considered brainwashing.

How else do you explain a group of people who use petroleum items every day, fly in planes, drive vehicles, keep warm via natural gas, and yet squawk about the horrors of the oil industry and how it is ruining the planet though they themselves are users?

Cults exploit. Leaders want their cult members to ruin the Canadian economy.

They have shut down the oil industry, stopped pipelines, halted transportation, and feel its exalted ends justify whatever means it feels necessary despite Canada being a carbon sink and only accounting for two percent of world environmental pollution.

Cults want authoritarianism and will not be accountable for their actions because they feel they are saving the world.

Cult members have an us versus them mentality, as does the Canadian Climate Change Cult. How they save the world by stopping two per cent of pollution is the type of twisted logic only a cult member can justify.

Cults do not tolerate questions or critical inquiry. Instead of receiving arguments you will be under attack for questioning them.

Anyone examining the Canadian Climate Change Cult is labelled a “climate change denier.” It’s name-calling to create fear to stop opposition.

Cult members are always made to be afraid of the outside world.

Only they can change the world, which they consider doomed without them. Canadian Climate Change Cult thinks the world could end by 2030, yet only have a “back to our caves” solution, and only for Canada.

Cult members often chant, to induce an altered consciousness.

Canadian Climate Change Cult members are often heard chanting slogans to keep active, involved, and unified.

Cult members dis-

play excessive zealousness and unquestioning commitment. Canadian Climate Change Cultists have put their bodies in front of trains and semi trailer tractors to stop shipments, or curb petroleum production.

Cults don’t feel they are accountable to any authority. The Climate Change Cult has shut down Canada’s rail lines for a week now with illegal blockades.

These industries the Canadian Climate Change Cult are defaming, halting, libelling, and ruining,

affect us all. They are legal companies, selling legal products, employing legal workers, and paying taxes. We all benefit from them processing and selling their valuable legal products.

In Canada, citizens have a legal right to protest. It is part of our freedoms. We are not, however, allowed to do so while impeding the rights of other Canadians who have the legal right to work and feed their families.

Peaceful protests don’t involve bullying.

Because of his policies, police stand idly by while the Canadian food supply runs low, export countries look for other supplying nations, workers are laid off, and Canadian industry can’t get needed supplies even in the depth of the dangerous, life-threatening, cold of winter.

Threat of jail time usually curbs illegal activities. Knowing there will be no retribution means we must live in a lawless country.

The ‘Response to Consultation’ report includes information on how community concerns that were expressed during consultation resulted in amendments to the Claystone Waste business plan. For instance, a component of the Claystone Waste business plan included provisions that would allow for out-ofprovince waste to be transported to the landfill site in Ryley. Residents stated strong opposition to this potential at the public information sessions. In response to this community feedback, the Claystone Waste business plan has been amended to no longer allow for the potential of out-ofprovince waste to be transported to the landfill site in Ryley.

“Removing the potential for out-of-province waste from the Claystone business plan is a demonstration of the

commitment of BMS to act on resident concerns and create a stronger MCC proposal,” Breau stated.

However, many concerns raised by residents and landowners were not directly related to the MCC proposal but were operational in nature. These concerns included issues of highway traffic and safety, high populations of birds and gulls attracted to the site, and mud on roadways adjacent to the landfill site.

BMS has responded to these concerns by implementing a series of action plans that are expected to deliver meaningful improvements to the concerns expressed by landowners.

“It’s important that those living closest to the landfill site have their concerns heard and acted upon. We’ve invested a significant amount of resources and taken significant steps to implement new operational improvements that are important to residents,” Breau said.

According to Breau, as the communities of Beaver County, Ryley, Tofield, Holden and

Viking further consider the proposal to establish Claystone Waste, BMS urges residents to review the report and see how their perspectives have been incorporated into the MCC proposal and how concerns with existing operations have been acted upon.

“Beaver Municipal Solutions is committed to using enforcement as a deterrent to improper driving behaviours. Violators of traffic safety protocols are, and will continue to be, banned from transporting material to the landfill site,” Breau added. “We have also taken a few key steps in terms of bird and gull control; implementation of these practices are expected to significantly reduce bird populations in 2020 and 2021 to daily counts of 300 or less from peaks observed in 2019 of 20,000 to 25,000.”

For the issue of mud on roadways, BMS consulted Alberta Transportation who has approved of the undertakings proposed.

Fair Deal session allows local voices to be heard Leslie Cholowsky MLA Jackie Lovely reports that 125 residents from the Constituency of Camrose gathered to be heard by the Fair Deal Panel in Camrose on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at the Norsemen Inn. “The panel was appointed to engage with Albertans on how best to define and secure a fair deal for Alberta and advance our vital economic position within confederation,” she says. The panel consists of nine individuals, including former and present MLAs, educators, business leaders, and former public servants.

They are looking into the following ideas: Establishing a provincial revenue agency to collect provincial taxes directly by ending the Canada-Alberta Tax Collection Agreement, while joining Quebec in

seeking an agreement to collect federal taxes within the province.

Creating an Alberta Pension Plan by withdrawing from the Canada Pension Plan.

Establishing a provincial police force by ending the Alberta Police Service Agreement with the Government of Canada.

Emulating Quebec’s practice of playing a larger role in international relations, in part by seeking Alberta representation in treaty negotiations that effect Alberta’s interests.

Emulating Quebec’s legal requirement that public bodies, including municipalities and school boards, obtain the approval of the provincial government before they can enter into agreements with the federal government.

Using the existing provincial power to appoint the Chief

Firearms Office for Alberta.

Opting out of federal cost-share programs with full compensation, such as the federal government’s proposed pharmacare program.

Seeking an exchange of tax points for federal cash transfers under the Canada Health and Social Transfers.

Establishing a formalized provincial constitution.

During December and January the panel held public meetings around the province, and some MLAs, like Lovely, hosted their own smaller town halls in February.

Lovely says the intent of holding engagement sessions across the province is to ensure Alberta’s voice is heard and that Albertans have a chance to help shape the panel’s recommendations to the government.

Grain farmers call for action after ‘harvest from hell’ Leslie Cholowsky Grain Growers of Canada have launched a campaign they are calling #harvestfromhell and have also created a platform for farmers to share the impact of the carbon tax on their farms on their website: harvestfromhell.ca.

On behalf of Canada’s grain, oilseed and pulse producers, the group Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) is calling for action from the federal government to support farmers after what they are calling the “har-

vest from hell” in late 2019.

Even though a new provincial government in Alberta cancelled the provincial carbon tax, a federal carbon tax applied to all Albertans effective Jan. 1. Farmers do receive some breaks on the federal carbon tax, but specifically do have to pay on fuels other than diesel used for drying grain.

“We have received broad support from opposition parties calling for immediate relief from the carbon tax for farmers after the disaster

that was last year’s harvest,” said GGC chair Jeff Nielsen. “We now need our federal government to step up.”

As part of this action, GGC is asking that farmer members be directly reimbursed from the federal government for the millions of extra dollars they have paid to dry their grain as a result of the carbon tax.

“With a changing climate, the new reality is that there will be future years where significant grain drying is required for farmers across Canada.

“Therefore, the most appropriate solution for both farmers and the government is to completely exempt all fuels used in farming opera-

tions from the carbon tax.

“A full fuel exemption will avoid the need for any future relief measures after events like last

year’s harvest.

“This issue is too important to delay,” adds Nielsen. “We are working with our See HARVEST BCC2

Encouraging investment East Central Alberta farmer looking for support to reinstate investment tax credit Leslie Cholowsky Ken Eshpeter recently appeared towards neighbouring Flagstaff County Council to ask for their support reinstating a new NDP tax credit that was cut before it could even be used after the UCP party took power in the province.

Called a Business Investment Tax Credit, Eshpeter is asking for the creation of a few pilot projects to test the strength of the Business Investment Tax Credit model for rural community development.

Eshpeter is a Daysland area farmer, and he says that he’s trying to look for solutions to declining population and vitality in rural communities, something he says he’s been seeing over the past 40 years.

He’s participated in a number of very successful grassroots co-operatives over the past 20 years to help maintain or bring back services in rural areas.

In 1999, a group of people formed a not-forprofit society in Daysland to maintain and run a local theatre for movies and concerts.

The Daysland Palace Theatre is a thriving hub of activity, with movies throughout the fall, winter, and spring, not one but two concert series, and even the odd wedding, and is completely run by volunteers.

In 2003, a group of farmers rallied together to save a CN rail ‘subdivision’ that runs from Camrose to Alliance. “CN was threatening to discontinue service.

cars per year from 2003 to 2010.� He says that wasn’t good enough, and the group was forced instead to purchase the line to keep it open. They had to come up with $5 million to do that, and formed a new generation cooperative to do so.

They have been operating the line now since 2010, with 145 farmer shareholders and 100 non-farmer shareholders. “Our headquarters is in Forestburg and the train is called the Battle River Railway. “We have created the equivalency of eight fulltime jobs in our community.�

Eshpeter says that similar investments to save and enhance key rural economic infrastructure have taken place in rural communities across Alberta, like Westlock, Sanguido, and Crowsnest Pass.

In another successful venture, started in 2013, Eshpeter says a group of people decided that taking advantage of local ownership of the rail line by running a train excursion tourism service utilizing the Battle River Railway owned by the co-operative, another project where a group formed a not-for-profit society, raised money, purchased some “vintage equipment, and began operating an excursion service,� again, run exclusively by volunteers.

The Friends of the Battle River Rail group currently offers 12 different themed excursions a year, bringing visitors to the six communities situ-

ated along the rail line.

Eshpeter says that in 2017, a group of farmers in the Wavy Lake District, the north west end of Flagstaff County, were worried that a local abattoir would close when the present owner retired if the business couldn’t be sold. “We created an opportunity development cooperative named the Wavy Lake Opportunity Development Co-op with the intention of raising $500,000 to allow us to purchase and then operate the facility,�

Eshpeter says.

The project has not yet been completed, but he’s convinced that an investment tax credit would have provided the incentive for community members to purchase more shares.

Eshpeter says he became aware that the provincial NDP government of the day had created an investment program for opportunity development co-ops where purchasers of shares would be eligible for a tax credit. “Such an opportunity has the potential to encourage rural citizens to invest in projects that could provide a necessary good or service in their area, create workplaces, and begin to revitalize the rural area generally. “It was the best idea that I had ever heard proposed for developing rural Alberta viability,� he says.

“The Business Investment Tax Credit concept would have allowed all of the projects I’ve been a part of to attract much more money from local farmers and community investors had it been available.”

Eshpeter proposed an idea to test the strength of the tax credit model by offering the credit on a few pilot projects.

“When the pilot projects are successful, the information would be valuable in creating a general program for allowing rural citizens to invest in their local communities.

“I think the idea is a perfect win-win oppor-

tunity.

“I know that the Alberta Community and C o - o p e r a t i v e Association would be eager to help with the project,” he says.

Eshpeter says that under the original credit proposed any money invested would be eligible for a 30 per cent business development tax credit. In a recent presentation to Flagstaff County Council, he says that means for every $10,000 in investment dollars, the investor would be able to deduct $3,000 from taxes due.

“This is a great way to attract funds from static traditional investments.

There are a thousand things we need to do in the rural area.” He thinks that investment opportunity would increase if investors could get an initial

rebate, potential dividends, like those paid by Battle River Railway NGC, as well as pride of ownership, of having done something for the community.

“When the UCP came in, the program was cut.

I thought it would be useful to duplicate it in a small way, on a pilot basis. There are projects around Alberta that could be used as pilots.”

He says he thinks that had Battle River Railway NGC had this opportunity, he’s sure they could have raised 50 per cent more.

“There are hosts of things where this could apply,” he says. “This is a significant incentive.”

He’s sent a letter to Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely, and to Camrose County, and told Flagstaff County Council, “I thought I

should reach out to others who have significant interest in the area.”

Eshpeter says his goal is to make rural councils aware of the issue, and he’s asking if they will support him by writing a letter endorsing the pilot project.

Flagstaff Council readily agreed, with Reeve Don Kroetch saying, “Lobbying for our residents is our job.”

Flagstaff Councillor Mel Thompson added, “This issue could be taken to the Rural Municipalities Assoc.; it couldn’t hurt.”

Eshpeter closed his presentation by saying, “I can write a story on what’s going to happen on the rural landscape if we do nothing; it’s not pretty.’

Flagstaff Council passed a resolution to write a support letter.

TO HEAR ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST A PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO BEAVER COUNTY LAND USE BYLAW 98-801 and TO CONSIDER WAIVING BEAVER COUNTY MUNICIPAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN 98-800 REGARDING A PROPOSED REDISTRICTING APPLICATION

Beaver County invites proposals for professional 3D visualization services of the Equity Industrial Park (EIP) near Ryley.

Beaver County Council is considering the following: a) Bylaw 20-1076 - an amendment to the Land Use Bylaw to redistrict a portion of Plan 022 6466, Block 1, Lot 1 in S ½ of SE/SW 32-50-20-W4 from Agricultural District - A to Country Residential District - CR so that a residential acreage (approximately 7 acres) can be created; b) A waiver of the Municipal Development Plan so that the entirety of S ½ of SE/SW 32-50-20-W4 does not have to be redistricted; c) A waiver of the Municipal Development Plan so that a professionally-prepared Conceptual Scheme and bio-physical assessment does not have to be prepared for the S ½ of SE/SW 32-50-20-W4; d) A waiver of the Municipal Development Plan so that a public meeting does not have to be held to present the Conceptual Scheme and bio-physical assessment to adjacent landowners.

Ron Lindsay passed away peacefully on February 10, 2020. Ron is survived by his best friend Grace of Liaoyang, China.

His daughter Raegen; grandchildren Jaden and Keefer; sisters Shirley, Betty, Donna; brothers Murray and Raymond and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son Tyler; his father Elston and mother Helen. Ron was born and raised in Tofield, Alberta.

He earned his plumbing and gas fitting tickets from NAIT and worked on projects throughout the province of Alberta, eventually starting his own company Lakeside Plumbing, working in the Tofield area.

Over the last twenty years Ron split his time between his home in Canada and working as a consultant on building projects in China, where he made many friends. Ron's tall stature and commanding presence earned him the nickname “Wild Bill.”

Ron was a Shanghai pool playing legend

and proved his abilities by beating twotime world champion, Ralf Souquet during a nine ball exhibition match.

He was part of the Shanghai Sharks pool club, playing in various tournaments throughout Southeast Asia. Ron was known for his sense of humour and quick wit, claiming to know over a thousand jokes. He was a great storyteller and an avid outdoorsman.

He especially loved hunting, fishing and camping.

In December of 2019, Ron was diagnosed with cancer.

He fought the good fight and never gave up, even when he knew his time was short. He was thankful to those around him for their help and did his best to make his passing easier on everyone by telling stories about the good times and never losing his sense of humour. Thanks to all his family and friends that came to visit and support him through this difficult journey. To his sister Betty who stayed with him

constantly throughout his last days, Ron was especially thankful for her love and care. A special thanks to the Doctors and Nurses at St. Mary's Hospital in Camrose, Alberta your care and loving attention to Ron throughout his battle was outstanding and commendable in every way.

Ron lived by the code of his movie hero, John Wayne.

He was a rugged individualist. Tough but tender, witty and wise, Ron “Wild Bill” Lindsay was a true one of a kind.

He will be missed by many but not forgotten by those whose paths he crossed.

May he rest in peace where the grass is green, the river runs clear and there are blue skies as far as the eye can see.

Where the walleye are biting and his jokes bring laughter and joy to all.

A Celebration of Life and potluck supper will be held for Ron at the Tofield Hotel Feb 22, 2020 at 4:00 pm.

A graveside gathering of family and invited friends will be held later this coming spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Tofield Atom 2 scores two massive wins TOFIELD MINOR HOCKEY REPORT

These are some of the results from the Northern Alberta Interlock Minor Hockey League games held recently.

Initiation and Novice game scores are never posted.

Tofield Tier 3 Atoms (13-4-1) lost a 6-3 game at home against Hinton on Saturday. Tofield had the lead twice and the game was tied 2-2 after the middle period but things got out of hand in the third. Lane Dehid scored twice for Tofield, with Jeffrey Mason getting the other goal. Assists went to; Bentley Carson (2a), Declan Girard and Jaxon Trudel.

Tofield Tier 6 Atoms (10-4-2) crushed Fort Sask. 19-2 on Saturday at Tofield Arena. Gabriel Thorson (4g 1a), Austin Schmick (3g 1a), and Carson Kroeker (3g 1a), all had hat tricks. Colton Munson (2g 4a) and Hunter Madro (2g 3a), had 6 and 5-point games respectively. Other scorers were; Steven Cardinal (1g 2a), Gavin Lutz (1g 2a), Jonas Teefy (1g 2a), Logan Kropp (1g 1a), and Karter Waldo (1g).

Braydo Crawford got the win in goal. On Sunday against Wetaskiwin at Tofield Arena, the home team pounded out an 111 victory. Colton Munson (4g 1a) and Gabriel Thorson (2g 3a) both had 5point games. Other goal scorers were; Jonas Teefy (2g), Austin Schmick, Steven Cardinal, and Karter Waldo. Assists went to; Carson Kroeker (2a), and Gavin Lutz.

David Cardinal got the win in goal.

Tofield Tier 4 Peewees (13-2-3) won a 5-1 game against Leduc at Tofield Arena on Saturday. Jorden Suchy (2g), Carter Olson (1g 1a), Zachery McFadzean (1g 1a), and Parker Stewart-Cantin all scored for Tofield. Colben Pedersen picked up an assist. Jocob Bigney got the win in goal. The team tied Battle River 1-1 on Sunday with Zachery McFadzean scoring for Tofield, assisted by Kowyn Laschowski.

Jacob Bigney stopped 25 shots between the Tofield pipes.

Tofield Tier 3 Bantams (3-14-5) lost a 6-5 home game against Battle River on Saturday. The game was back and forth, with each team having the

lead before BR took over in the third frame. Davin Codd (3g 1a) got a hat trick for Tofield. Other scorers were; Brampton Jennings (3a), Christian Amirault (1g 1a), Seth Sideroff (1g 1a), Derek Liptak (1a), and Lukas Turnbull (1a).

Tofield Tier 4 Midgets (10-8-2) beat Battle River 5-2 at Tofield Arena on Friday. Daniel Romaniuk, Koyier Cameron and James Wipf each had a goal and an assist. Other scorers were; Ethan Zemlak (2a), Kien Yuha (1g), Cody Forbes (1g), Carter Chomik (1a), and Bryce Hunt (1a). Dawson Koch stopped 40 of 42 shots for a .952 save percentage game.

Tofield Bantams to play in consolation round Moush John Tofield Mercury

Despite a late revival in form, the Tofield Bantams will not make it to the playoffs and instead are headed to the consolation round.

Over the next two weeks they play teams in various divisions to determine which consolation they will be playing in.

In the meantime, the Bantams have been playing well in tournaments, according to Head Coach Wayne Codd.

“The team went to Beiseker for a tournament the last weekend in January, which turned out to be an explosive weekend for us,” Codd said. “We rallied to score 25 goals in the tournament and lost

in a very close A final to the host team 5-4. The team spent a great weekend together on the ice as well as off, and the boys really bonded and had a great time and have been playing great hockey since.”

The Bantams played their last season game on the weekend, but lost to the first-place team by a goal.

“The prior weekend we tied our rivals New Sarepta who are in second place, and even though we placed last in our division of Tier 3, every game was back and forth with the lead, and we usually only lost by a goal if we didn’t tie!”

It’s bittersweet for the team, as there are four players in the top 50 of

the league leader point getters, and one of them was in the top six goal scorers in the league, while two of them are in a five-way tie for most short-handed goals scored.

“The team has come on real strong at the end of the season and are playing well,” Codd added.

“We are very hopeful

their hard work will pay off the last bit of the season in the consolation rounds. The team is getting along well in the dressing room and they are still making memories of great times and having fun, showing the true meaning of sports, and having a great time competing with their teammates and friends.”

Council Corner Town of Tofield explains where consumption of cannabis is now legal The Federal Government recently permitted the consumption and sale of edible cannabis products. This coincides with the already permitted sale of cannabis products to be used for means such as smoking, and, or vaping. With this new permitted use for sale and consumption, the Council for the Town of Tofield repealed Bylaw 1300, which regulated and controlled the smoking and vaping of cannabis. Council then implemented Bylaw 1313 which regulates and controls the smoking, vaping and consumption of cannabis. This new piece on consumption will look to be applied to such cannabis materials as edibles, as has been discussed by the Federal Government.

Council wishes to highlight facts which are specific to the use and regulation of cannabis in the Town of Tofield.

Q1: Can I use cannabis in any public space in Tofield?

A1: The answer is no. The Town of Tofield passed Bylaw 1313, which is similar to many municipalities banning the use of cannabis products in any public place. The fine for contravention will begin at $250.00 for a first offence.

Q2: Where can I use cannabis?

A2: Cannabis can only be consumed at a residence, a temporary residence or at a

designated location as approved

by Council.

Q3: Can I use cannabis in a vehicle?

A3: No, provincial law prohibits the use of any cannabis products in a vehicle. Persons contravening this are subject to a fine of $500.00 Q4: What is the amount of cannabis I can have in my possession?

A4: The legal possession limit for an adult is 30 grams of dry cannabis Q5: Can I transport cannabis in a vehicle?

A5: As per provincial law, no person may transport cannabis in a vehicle unless the cannabis is contained in closed packaging that is out of the reach of the driver and any of the vehicle occupants. The fine for this infraction is $100.00 Q6: What is the legal age for someone to possess or use cannabis?

A6: You must be 18 years of age to purchase, obtain or possess cannabis as per the provincial legislation. The fine for this contravention is $100.00. If you

are under 18 you are not permitted in a licensed cannabis retail store even if accompanied by an adult.

It is important to note; the smoking and vaping of cannabis has the same spatial distances applied to use as the provincial regulation for smoking. Therefore, the use on spaces such as outdoor public patios or close proximity to the entrances to public spaces, is not permitted and a fineable offence. This regulation also applies to the use of edibles for consumption.

To provide further clarity, and look to eliminate confusion, Council has provided for your review the entirety of Part 2, which is specific to Prohibition.

PART 2 – PROHIBITION No person shall smoke, vape or consume cannabis or products containing cannabis in any of the following places: i. a day care; ii an eating and drinking establishment; or a licensed gaming establishment; iii. an outdoor patio; iv. a park; v. a place of worship; vi. a playground; vii. a public building; viii. a recreation facility;

ix. a restaurant; x. a school; xi. a workplace.

No person shall smoke, vape or consume cannabis or products containing cannabis in, on or within any of the following places: i. an entrance or exit to a day care; ii. an entrance or exit to a place of worship; iii. an entrance or exist to a recreation facility; iv. an entrance or exit to a school; v. a park; vi. a playground.

No person shall smoke, vape or consume cannabis or products containing cannabis in any area or place where that person is prohibited from smoking or vaping under the Tobacco and Smoking Reduction Act, SA 2005, c. T-3.8.

The Council for the Town of Tofield strives to provide the most enjoyable community and amenities for their residents.

The passing of this Bylaw continues on in this means.
