My Djursland
Sharin Foo
Musician and singer in the band The Raveonettes

I was born at Grenaa hospital on a November morning in 1973. My parents had moved from Farum to Djursland the year before. They were dreaming of a different life, far away from the dull life in suburbia, and had bought a small, derelict farmhouse in the small village Emmelev Kær.
I remember Mille, the cow, the dangerous geese and the pigs I was sometimes teasing for fun. I remember the big hill you had to get over to come to Granlunden, a collective where the sisters of my father were living. Here you could do whatever you wanted. Me, my cousins and the other kids were playing all day long. We were exploring the hilly wilderness behind the pond, we built hiding places and we almost got lost, like children do. We were sitting in a tree for hours, eating cherries. And at the end of the day, I cycled home along the gravelled road, while the sun was low on the horizon.
At our place we had sandy soil that was perfect for carrots. The people from Granlunden came to grow carrots in our garden, and I grew up drinking lots of carrot juice from the sandy soil. My mother is convinced that this is the reason why I never get ill.
Our parents founded their own school in the buildings of a former village school. We were 18 kids who started on the first school day. I cycled along fields, reed and hay bales to the small village of Kastbjerg, where our school was. All the other children were friends or relatives.
There were never-ending summers, and we took our bikes, swimsuit and towel on the luggage carrier, and cycled along the dusty gravelled roads to Veggerslev, through the forest, past Sostrup Castle, into Gjerrild and around the old beech tree, Svalebøgen, until we reached the beach Gjerrild Nordstrand. We found a sheltered place where it could get so hot that we had to get into the water for a refreshing dip. But only up to the navel, because the Kattegat quickly gets deep here – as quickly as the childhood is over. What is left are lots of good memories, like early mornings cycling through the morning mist to a farm located between Karlby and Gjerrild Klint to pick strawberries. The fields were covered with spider nets carrying waterdrops that looked like pearls, and the sweet taste of the berries will always carry dear childhood memories.

You actually spend one third of your holiday with sleeping… There is a wide range of accommodation in Djursland, which is one of the areas in Denmark where you find most summerhouses. Along the coast there are many lovely camp sites, and also small inns, holiday villages, youth hostels and of course hotels are a good alternative. If you prefer private accommodation, you will be happy to hear that the number of private rooms and B&Bs has been constantly rising over the latest years.

A guided tour and wine tasting like in southern Europe

You come to Andersens Winery in Vrinners on Mols, and you feel like being on a vineyard in southern Europe. A lovely scent from the big fermentation tanks is filling the chilly room. One of the employees is ready to start the guided tour, telling visitors everything about the complex process: from the raw fruit until the sparkling wine is ready to be enjoyed.
Andersen Winery is using the old method “Methode Traditionelle”, which has its origin in Champagne in France. The final fermentation is happening in the bottle, which over a long period is turned very slowly. Then the remaining yeast is removed, and the bottle is closed with a cork. Afterwards the wine is stored between 9 and 45 months.
After the guided tour guests can taste the wines. Already the first sample proves, that this is sparkling wine of superb quality. If you wouldn’t look at the label, you would think it is actually made from grapes. The following samples are stronger in colour and have the distinctive taste of rhubarb, raspberries, gooseberries and other fruits and berries.

Free of charge and without booking ahead
All sparkling wines from Andersen Winery are made from apples or other fruits and berries, and some are a mix of different fruits. They contain typically between 10 and 12% alcohol. If you must drive home, you can taste the wines with less alcohol – they are excellent, even though they only contain around 2% alcohol.
Not only tourists and locals visit Andersen Winery. Businesses, sommeliers and apprentices come to learn more about the fantastic sparkling fruit wines, which are served in exclusive restaurants all over Europe and sold in more than 100 shops in Denmark. They are also exported to several countries in Europe and Asia.
Andersen Winery is open all year round and offers up to four guided tours a day. You can come without pre-booking a guided tour, which lasts 45 minutes. Most of the visitors purchase some bottles afterwards to enjoy at home. w .andersenwinery.dk

Lots of choice and friendly service

In the little village Egens Havhuse you find the family-owned smoke house Mols Røgeri, which offers a wide choice of fish and delicacies of high quality. Visitors are welcome to sit on one of the 10 tables in the courtyard and enjoy their packed lunches, combined with some delicacies from the shop. The smoke house and shop are only a few hundred meters away from the famous Kalø castle ruin. Take a walk out to the remains of the old castle and enjoy a lunch afterwards at the smoke house – or buy some fish and other delicacies to take home.
See the smoking ovens and have a chat
The shop offers fish and seafood of high quality, sourced carefully by suppliers at Danish fish auctions. The salmon comes from the Faeroe Islands and Denmark, and the prawns are peeled by hand. Thomas has been the smoke master for the last 20 years, smoking fish and sea food in his own smokers which he is happy to show visitors and tell them about the art of smoking. Everything in the shop like remoulade, salads and

fried fish is made from scratch, and the recipe for the fishcakes is a family secret from 1985.
Open every day
A female regular explains: “I´m coming here because there is lots of things to choose from, the fish is fresh, and you get a very good service. It is a pleasant experience to do your shopping here”. And this is exactly what the brothers Thomas and Morten Bork want to offer their customers. Both have been helping their parents in the shop since they were children, and they know their trade.
No compromises are made when it comes to the quality of the fish and the other ingredients they use, and the smoke house and shop is open daily all year round, except the public holidays at Christmas and New Year.

Art on the way

The heritage of the communes from the 70ies
The artist environment in Djursland is strong and diverse, and nature as well as the coastal environment are inexhaustible sources of inspiration for the artists. On a trip around the area, you will walk past galleries, workshops and exhibitions. You simply have to seize the opportunity and take a look inside.
Ceramics, Candles and Glass
Ceramic-, glass and textile art and quality handicrafts are available in rich quantities. You can participate in candle making. Art exhibitions suddenly turn up at the harbour front, on a vineyard or in the lobby of a hotel.
Art is surrounding us in an approachable
way
On the backside of the supermarket Meny in Rønde you find 13 ceramic mosaics created by Anette Printz, telling local stories about the “Molbo” people and other tales. And when you jump into the water at the indoor swimming pool in Grenaa, you can admire a piece of art on the big wall called “Ringen” by Jørgen Hansen, consisting of 152 ceramic blocks in all colours of the rainbow.
Djursland on a mug
The local scenery and culture have inspired Aase and Troels Kvorning to design a mug called “Djurslandsbægeret” (Djursland mug). A ceramic mug with motives from the local nature, scenery and cultural heritage, f. ex. a fishing boat, a deer or a barrow.
A landscape expedition
You find more than 800 protected cultural monuments around Djursland, most of them burial monuments, und many interesting finds have been discovered by archaeologists, among them the biggest hoard of coins in Denmark, which was found in 1967 near the village of Kirial and contained 81.422 coins.
Explore the ancient times and visit mystical monuments. Porskær Stenhus on Mols is the biggest barrow in Denmark. When you walk inside the burial chamber you are standing under a 12 ton granite stone. And if you explore the stone age site at Tustrup with barrows, dolmens and sacrificial sites, your fantasy gets wings. Take a kite, a wooden sword and a picnic basket with you and play or simply enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Nature in Allingåbro – On water and rails

The station and the hotel across the street stand as reminders of Allingåbro’s proud history as a railway town. The hotel is decorated in an old-fashioned style, making visitors feel as if they have stepped back to 1876 when it first opened. At the station, which dates back to the same period, you can find old photographs and uniforms on display.
Here, you can sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee outdoors before visiting the vintage car museum or renting a rail bike for a westbound ride. Enjoy a truly unique cycling experience through the beautiful natural surroundings of Randers Fjord.
Stunning nature with rare wildlife
At the station, you can rent canoes for a trip along the stream. The kingfisher is a frequent visitor here all year round, attracting photographers from far and wide who hope to capture an image of this rare bird. You may also spot deer and, if you’re lucky, even an otter playing in the water.

A trail runs along the stream leading to the museums at Gl. Estrup, where you can pull up your canoe and explore the exhibition about Alling Å. Additionally, there is the „Jernbanestien“ (Railway Trail), perfect for walking or cycling, with stops at ancient monuments marked with signs sharing fascinating historical insights.
Sleep by Alling Å
In Allingåbro, just a stone’s throw from the station, you will find free-to-use shelters, a large fire hut, and well-placed picnic tables along the trails and by the stream, ideal for enjoying a packed lunch. The stream is particularly well-suited for kayaking and paddleboarding – and at Lunden in Allingåbro, there is a specially designed jetty for easy boarding. Immerse yourself in the serenity of nature, where time seems to stand still.
If you head in the opposite direction, up Hovedgaden, you will find several exciting thrift shops filled with high-quality vintage treasures.
You can easily spend an entire day enjoying nature and hunting for vintage finds in Allingåbro.

Make summer a party in Grenaa

The music bodega Kruset in Lillegade, together with Djurs Event, ensures a fantastic atmosphere and great music in Grenaa throughout the summer season. On the square by the church, Djurs Event provides drinks and live music, creating a lively crowd, while Kruset offers a peaceful oasis during the day and a festive, social atmosphere in the evening.
Summer Vibes and Live Music at the Square
The 300 seats under the large parasols are often filled with people enjoying the lively atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to take a well-deserved break and listen to local musicians performing. Here and there, men sit holding shopping bags for their wives while sipping on a cold draft beer. Nearby, a group of children with slush ice in hand play in the large fountain, Skålen.
Djurs Event has planned a total of 55 concerts for the season. If a few raindrops fall, the large parasols provide shelter, and if the weather turns too bad, the concert is moved to Kruset, just a few meters down Lillegade.
Fantastic Atmosphere at Kruset
In Kruset’s cozy courtyard, you can enjoy a draft beer, delicious cocktails, or soft drinks in a relaxed setting during the day and early evening when the space is open to everyone. The atmosphere is always fantastic, and the place is often packed. Inside, guests enjoy a beer or cocktail, watch football or the Tour de France, and soak in the lively environment. In the evening, entry is for adults only.
The venue is filled with character, featuring around 400 photos of world-famous musicians alongside pictures of local artists who have performed there. Hundreds of vinyl singles hang from the ceiling, and two double basses have been creatively transformed into lamps. If you’re feeling bold and inspired, you’re welcome to grab a guitar and join in for a song or jam session.
Stop by and take a tour – it’s a bit like a rock museum.

Find Kruset’s
The vibrant capital of Djurslands

The trading town Grenaa is the biggest town in Djursland with a great variety of shops offering branded articles you won’t find other places on the peninsula. At the cosy cafés and restaurants in town you will find new energy when you are hungry. Sankt Gertrud’s Church, unofficially referred to as Grenaa Church marks the square, and from here you find the shops in the connected pedestrian streets.
The town has grown during the industrialisation and developed into a central town with important public functions, suburban train connection to Aarhus, educational institutions and a solid trade and business basis. Derelict industrial buildings have been converted into modern spaces with references to – and respect for – the rich industrial history of Grenaa.
Activities in the town centre
On a walk through town you find beautifully preserved, halftimbered houses, multi-level building and modern architecture. The town centre is bound together by the big, open town square, where the kids can play while you can enjoy a drink, listen to live music almost daily during July, visit the flea market and take part in lots of other activities.

The water fountains at the town square are the tale of the former textile mill Grenaa Dampvæveri. Let the kids run between the fountains which were inspired by threads of yarn. The water springs randomly, splashing the kids who are having the best time.
Art and culture
Throughout the year, you can visit art exhibitions at the Town Hall, the culture centre Kulturhuset Pavillonen and the mill Baunhøj Mølle. In several locations, you can listen to live music, enjoy a freshly tapped beer, and visit a bar or discotheque. Pavillonen offers a broad cultural programme with concerts, stage plays and more. w pavillonen.dk
The town at kids’ level
If you have children with you, it can be wonderful to have a break from shopping and town life. Eat your packed lunches in the town centre in the park across from Pavillonen or enjoy the atmosphere by the duck pond. The forest lake in the plantation, the nature playground in the woods or the playground at the marina are other child-friendly spots. Or what about a trip to the bowling centre, if it’s raining?

You can buy drinks and there is often music at the town square in July

Authentic harbour environment and play at the town beach

Not many towns the size of Grenaa offer such a varied nature so close to the urban areas. The stream Grenaa is flowing through the town and the green spaces, parks and many paths secure easy access to the forest, the beach and the heath. Grenaa is a very green town with a well-developed network of tracks for hikers, joggers, cyclists and riders. Among other things, you will find the challenging 12 km long singletrack mountain bike trail in the plantation.
Stream environment and urban beach
Follow the cosy path along the stream Grenåen from the harbour to the town or the other way. The stream connects the marina and Grenaa beach, often called one of the best beaches in Denmark, with the town and continues past Grenaa golf course and into Kolindsund. The stretch from the harbour to Enslevgården (about 6 km) is pretty and rich in variety, and many locals take the tour on the river Grenå in a canoe or kayak. From the romantic white bridges at the culture centre Kulturhuset Pavillonen, the stream moves through the town, along residential areas and past the interesting new residential area Åbyen
During the high season you can use the city bus free of charge.

It is taking you from the town centre to the harbour and the Kattegatcentre and back. w .midttrafik.dk
Safety for water enthusiasts
At Katholm Strandvej you find parking spaces, toilets and showers. At Dronningens Ferieby, there is a bridge and a ramp for easy access to the water for wheelchair users. TrygFonden is running a staffed rescue tower, where the lifeguards are prepared to provide bathing advice.
Experiences at the harbour
Visit Kattegatcenter and watch the funny and active penguins, the sleek sharks and 200 other fascinating creatures of the sea. From the ferry port you can take a Stena Line ferry to Halmstad in Sweden, and a second ferry takes you to the island of Anholt. Close to the ferry port, you will find restaurants and an opportunity to buy smoked fish from the fishmonger. A Sunday brunch at the beautiful yellow seaside hotel is a great experience full of nostalgia. Enjoy a glass of cool white wine in the maritime ambience with a view over the endless dunes. At Fornæs Fyr, there are benches and good opportunities to enjoy the view.

A world of music instruments, lighting and sound

DanGuitar.dk is the biggest retailer of music equipment. Owner Thomas Svenstrup bought the big building in Grenaa, which is the head quarter of the company now, back in 2014. He could see the possibilities and made his dreams come true: A store with a massive show room full of all kinds of instruments as well as sound and lighting equipment, mixers and studio equipment. Customers find both classic, well-established brands and products from innovative companies. The target group includes all ages, and beginners as well as skilled musicians with lots of experience.
The webshop of DanGuitar has been growing rapidly and is selling to both Denmark, Norway and Sweden via DanGuitar.dk, DanMusikk.no and DanGuitar.se.
Broad range and professional, personal service
Everyone is welcome in the huge music-supermarket, and everyone who is playing or having an interest in music can spend hours browsing the store.
To make music is often a great passion for people, and Thomas wants his customers to be able to check and listen before they make a purchase. Therefore, the complete range of instruments, lighting and sound equipment is represented in the huge

show room – and customers are more than welcome to test everything. All members of the staff are performing musicians, and you get professional and personal guidance to make sure to take home a product that suits your needs and expectations. And while you are browsing the shop, you will be offered a good cup of coffee to make the experience even more pleasant.
Competitive prices
Any web shop needs to operate with competitive prices, and Thomas is aware of this fact. He is following the price development online closely to match the prices – and prices in the store are the same, plus you can see and test all products.
Get your holiday purchase sent home
You cannot always squeeze your purchase on the back seat of your family car, between your mother-in-law and inflatable pool toys. In these cases, the web shop comes in handy: If you purchase or order before 15.30, your order will be sent the same day. Or you can choose a delivery date and get the perfect timing, so your package is already waiting for you when you return home.

Unique jewellery with opals from the own gem mine

Jensen Opals is a jewellery store in the heart of Ebeltoft, offering exclusive jewellery featuring Australian opals designed by Helle. Helle and Hans are amongst the few people in the world, who are both mining opals, cutting them and designing their own jewellery.
Design your own piece of opal-jewellery
Are you dreaming of a personal piece of opal-jewellery?
Jensen Opals offers the biggest selection of Australian opals in Denmark, and you can also see how they are cut and polished. Together with Helle you can design your very own personal piece of jewellery, either with an opal from the store or a gemstone you bring yourself. It is recommended to book an appointment beforehand, so Helle can fully dedicate her time and attention to your ideas and wishes.
The Australian mine
The couple started to be interested in opals during their time in Australia, where they lived twenty years in the small mining town of Lightning Ridge in the Australian Outback.

Lightning Ridge is one of the few places in the world where you can find opals. The area is especially famous for the black opal, which is the rarest and most precious opal. If you are lucky, you go out searching in the Australian Outback in the morning and come back in the evening with an opal that is 100 million years old.
Quality and warranty
Since the opals come from the couples own mine and are cut in their own workshop, they can guarantee for the quality and genuineness of the stones. Each piece of jewellery is designed by Helle with passion and care, and if you design your very own piece together with her, your jewellery dream will come true. w jensenopals.dk

Watchmen in the cobbled streets
The watchmen date back to the early days of Danish market towns. Their job was to maintain peace and order, to light and put out the streetlamps, and to raise alarm in case of fire. See and hear the watchmen every Saturday from late June until late August at 7, 8 and 9 pm.

Ebeltoft – a popular holiday destination

With its slanting, half-timbered houses, cobbles and blooming hollyhocks, Ebeltoft is one of Denmark’s most charming towns. The square and the old town hall, Det Gamle Rådhus, form the heart of Ebeltoft, and they are the setting of many activities during the year.
Ebeltoft apple tree
The name Ebeltoft comes from the Danish word »æble« (apple) – Ebeltoft is a piece of land with apple trees. On the streets and squares, big, beautiful concrete apples, carved in stone, decorate the city. The main shopping street of the town is called Adelgade and holds Farvergården, which is one of Ebeltoft’s most impressive half-timbered houses. Farvergården is the only preserved urban dyeing house in Northern Europe.
A creative focal point
Today, Ebeltoft is a creative focal point for people who like to live in a community. People, who want to make a difference, among them many artists. They share a vision of developing society and create spaces for the individual to grow. Authentic harbour atmosphere combined with lots of things going on

The old fishing harbour is still active and has transformed into an attractive area, where fishermen, carpenters, restaurants and delis work side by side. The atmosphere is special and full of diversity, and you can both chat with a boat enthusiast at the quay and enjoy a good lunch with your friends – accompanied by the scent of tar and smoked fish. Enjoy the charming atmosphere with the picturesque fishermen´s houses. Eat fresh fish at the local restaurants or take a trip along the coast in a kayak or SUP. Or visit the cosy shops, ice cream parlours and cafés at the harbour.
You can jump into the water from the bathing jetty and the place is a perfect start for a trip with a kayak or SUP-board. The town and the harbour are closely connected, and the many old wooden ships make for a fantastic maritime scenery, so a walk along the sea front always is a great experience – made even more spectacular by the breath-taking view over the hills of Mols Bjerge on the other page of the bay.

At Skudehavnen, you can enjoy yourselves catching crabs in maritime surroundings. Enjoy the sunset over Mols Bjerge on an evening trip past the glass museum and the frigate.
Wine, cheese, spirits, beer and local specialities
Visit “Hos Walter”, and Kristian & Co. will offer you wonderful experiences for your taste buds. They have everyday samples to taste, and every Saturday between 11 and 14 the shop is arranging wine tastings – all year round. Kristian is a wine expert, but he is also passionate about local specialities. He also recommends visiting the event “Summer at the harbour” which is taking place every Thursday from 16 to 20 from week 27 until week 32, with roast piglet, live music and lots of local produce to be tasted, plus a butcher and a fishmonger who are coming to the harbour.

Rønde – busy merchant town at the top

There is no doubt: the landscape surrounding Rønde, the port to Mols Bjerge National Park and the bay of Kalø with the characteristic Kalø Castle Ruins is absolutely stunning. The town is lying on top of a hill with fantastic views and offers lots of shopping opportunities along the main road.
Lots of bustling activity
The town is full of life, no matter the day of the week, and you find 560 free parking spaces – mainly in the side streets or parallel streets of the main road.
You can buy everything you need in Rønde. Especially the main street offers lots of shops within most categories, and there are 4 supermarkets in town. Together they cover everything for your daily needs, and you can also buy lots of local produce. Afterwards you can find a café or restaurant and take a little break while enjoying a nice meal.
A town amidst history and nature
Historically, Rønde is very interesting with both the Kalø Castle Ruins dating back to the 14th century and the surrounding landscape which was formed by the ice age. In the town park you can see two canons from General Ryes fallback in the year 1849, and just outside town you find Kalø Jagtslot, a historical building drawn by the local architect Hack Kampmann.
If you climb the hill Store Bavnehøj just opposite the hostel on a clear day, you have a fantastic view over the pretty landscape of Djursland, all the way to Aarhus and Grenaa. Another great nature experience are the big woods stretching down the hill from Bregnet to the bay of Kalø. Ice age and ice cream in Mols Bjerge

The giant rock “Store Sten” in Rønde is a stunning proof for the power of the glaciers during the ice age. The Kalø-glacier delivered around 18,000 years ago a granite rock with a weight of 20 tons that can be seen just outside Egegården. The rock was discovered during excavation works for a building project. Try the hiking tour “Stenrunden” (about 4 km) which is leading you past the impressive rock in Rønde.
The latest ice age (around 16,000 years ago) has also shaped the landscape of Mols Bjerge. Two glaciers were pushing gravel, sand and stones with mighty power through what we know today as the bay of Ebeltoft and the bay of Kalø, forming the hilly landscape we now call Mols Bjerge.
Trip to Kalø Slotsruin
Only 2 km from Rønde lies Kalø Slotsruin, an old fortress, which was built on a desert island in Kalø Vig. Today, the castle ruin is a favourite place of excursion for both locals and tourists. Via an interior staircase inside the tower, you can climb your way to the top of the castle ruin and enjoy the view of Mols Bjerge.
Nature and culture meet at Kalø
There are more than 100 ancient sites dating back to the Stone Age and the Bronze Age in the beautiful beech forests and landscapes around the inlet Kalø Vig. Follow the hiking path “Oldtidstien”

(4,5 km) in Ringelmose Woods, which is leading you to the most impressive of these ancient sites: a long barrow, six dolmens, several burial mounds, a ford and a holy well.
Go on explorations in the landscape
Visit Agri with the highest-situated lake in Denmark and the impressive cliffs at Mols Hoved and Isgård. Bring a bucket and a fishing rod to catch crabs at Knebelbro, at the marina in Skødshoved or put your boat in the water and take a memorable sailing trip. The most child-friendly bathing beach of the area is Begtrup Vig.
The peninsula of Helgenæs
If you leave Mols, the road leads to Dragsmur and the peninsula of Helgenæs. In the beautiful, undulating landscape you find interesting nature areas as well as ancient monuments. In Kongsgårde you also have a cosy little marina where you can rent a boat. On foot, you can follow the coastline all the way around the peninsula. From the car park, there is a path to Ellemandsbjerget, which is the highest point of the peninsula. At the tip, you find the lighthouse, Sletterhage Fyr, surrounded by a stony beach and deep waters. A path along the beach leads to Tyskertårnet from World War II. From here you have a view of the island Samsø and, in particularly clear weather, Sjælland and Fyn.
