Good advice to prevent fire:

• Never make a fire in nature areas.

• Check the local rules concerning open fire, there are f. ex. special rules on the island of Anholt.

• Place the barbecue on a non-combustible surface.

• Have the hose or something else ready when making a bonfire or grilling.

• Use barbecue or fireplace lighter for your barbecue/log burner.

• Put ashes from the log burner/barbecue in a metal bucket and pour water over.

• Never put hot ashes in the bin or spread it outside. If you park along a road, make sure there is enough space (at least 3 m) for emergency vehicles to pass.

• Never park your car in high grass or other high vegetation.

Djursland in the heart

I have been catching garfish in the muggy air of an approaching thunderstorm at Fornæs Fyr. I have been walking in the deep and calm woods of Løvenholm, with deer and cranes, and felt as if I was the only person in the world. I have eaten the best burger of my life on a wonderful summer day at the beach in Ebeltoft, and I have been drinking hot coffee and eating fresh buns from Føtex in Øer, while thousands of doves were migrating with the clear north-eastern wind and the island Hjelm was bathed in the light of the rising sun, telling forgotten stories from the past.

I have walked on Gravlevstien, while the Nightingales kept on singing, and I have been sitting on the south-facing slopes on Helgenæs in the spring, watching the many bees and birds and enjoying the scent of the flowering sloe bushes. I have been crawling amongst the rare plants on the beaches of Boeslum and Kobberhage and thought, that this must be the most Danish landscape in the whole wide world. In Dragsmur I have been sitting and watching the many birds of prey circling above my head, surrounded by the sea on both sides. And on a dark afternoon in December, I was lucky to watch 150 red kites settling for the night in Skandinavisk Dyrepark.

For more than twenty years I have arranged guided tours for families at my workplace, Molslaboratoriet, showing them the most biodiverse and fantastic nature, we have in Denmark. Afterwards, in the evening, I went down to the coast to catch a sea trout. I can never get enough of this; I want more all the time! Days with swarms of insects and nights with glowing fireflies and dark clouds glittering silvery in the moonlight. Pure magic, and I wish, everyone in the world could experience this.

Djursland is the essence of everything, that is wonderful in the world. And you will always carry it in your heart.

Lots of outdoor activities

Café, bunks and kayak trips

There are always lots of activities at Karpenhøj Naturcenter. We offer workshops with nature themes, guided tours with kayak or mountain bike and hiking tours. You can try to spend the night in a tipi, a shelter or in a hammock with a view to the treetops, or maybe you would like to cook food over the campfire? During the summer holidays we offer a variety of activities for children and adults, and you can visit our café. Book all activities directly on our website.

More and more want to get out in the wilderness

“The interest for outdoor life has almost exploded. We are very privileged to have this place in the wild and fascinating nature of the national park, and we want to share it with you. We can arrange events for companies, workshops for school classes, holiday activities for the whole family and workshops around outdoor life. Visitors are always more than welcome to discover the area on their own and enjoy their packed lunches here”, says leader of Karpenhøj Karen Thingstrup.

Adventures in the nature, fun and being together with the family

At Fjordcentret in the nature park of Randers Fjord it is easy to spend a whole day with family or friends. You can take a canoe trip, try sailing on the fjord, make a trip in waders and see if you can catch crabs, prawns or small fish. The staff at the center helps you to identify what you have caught – maybe you want to eat it for dinner, or it goes into the aquarium. You can shoot with water rockets, make a bonfire using fire steel and try our fantastic playgrounds. You should also visit the exhibition of the center and enjoy the many activities.

Fjordcamp in a tent, in a shelter or book a room

Book a stay over and enjoy outdoor life and fantastic experiences in the free nature. Let the weather and your mood decide where and how you prepare your meals: over the campfire, in the kitchen, inside or outside. Simple and good facilities for an overnight stay, cooking facilities, storage room, toilets and bathroom. Remember bedding, food, beverages and personal equipment.

– an experience with animals at eye level

Munkholm Zoo is a family-friendly zoo with more than 90 different species, from farm animals to more exotic animals like f. ex. porcupines, different monkey species, camels, servals and reptiles.

For us it is important that visitors get an “experience with animals at eye level”. That means you come close to the animals, and many of them can be petted and fed with food from the zoo. During the daily feeding round you can learn more about the different animals and help with the feeding, and during the animal demonstrations it is possible to f. ex. touch a snake.

Welcome to a fantastic experience for the whole family.

200 wondrous, colourful species will give you an outstanding experience at Kattegatcenter!

Or feel a cold shiver down your spine, when you are suddenly surrounded by sharks – and fall in love with our cute seals, when they snatch a herring and learn the alphabet!

At Kattegatcenter you find more than 200 species from all over the world – from small jellyfishes to big grey nurse sharks and many more. We feed and train the tropical sharks every day. See their fins cut through the water and scary jaws rip flatfish out of the trainer´s hand. We also feed in the huge oceanarium, where you can watch the diver feeding treats to all kinds of fish from the Kattegat. And meet our ocean expert, who will bring you closer to the fascinating life under water than you have ever been before!

Come and visit us at Kattegatcenter! See you!

Munkholm Zoo – fun with animals for the whole family

2022 is the second season for Milo and Lars as new owners of the little zoo in Djursland.

When strolling through the park, you will meet the whole family: at the entrance, at the pony riding and during the feeding rounds.

The family wants to create a sensual universe for the whole family, where you come close to the animals and have a good time together. You can visit the many tame animals in their enclosures and come close to the more exotic animals together with one of the zookeepers – and you can even help the zookeepers when they are feeding the animals.

“We are looking forward to the new season. Our ambition has been from the start to give visitors a fantastic experience with our many different animals, and we want them to feel safe and comfortable”, explains Lars. “Here is space for everyone and you come really close to the animals.”

You can visit the café or bring your packed lunch to enjoy in one of the many cosy corners of the park.

Live and alive in Djursland

Theatre and Music

Djursland offers lots of events for all ages – both cultural and family friendly arrangements. Culture houses and music venues arrange lots of concerts and shows with both national and international names.

A landscape expedition

You find more than 800 protected cultural monuments around Djursland, most of them burial monuments, und many interesting finds have been discovered by archaeologists, among them the biggest hoard of coins in Denmark, which was found in 1967 near the village of Kirial and contained 81.422 coins.

Cycle and hiking routes – in every direction

Gjerrildbanestien – 45 km long trail from Gjerrild to Allingåbro. A part of the trail is asphalted, and it is winding through the landscape without big differences in altitude, as it follows the former railway tracks. Kaløstien – 14 km long trail from

Ryomgård to the ruins of Kalø Castle. Lodsstien – 31 km long trail between Udbyhøj and Randers harbour. Mols Bjergestien – 60 km long trail in the super league of hiking trails. Nordsøstien – a network of trails near the coastline in the countries surrounding the North Sea with a total length of 5000 km. In Djursland, Nordsøstien starts at the ferry harbour in Ebeltoft and is leading via Glatved and Grenaa to Udbyhøj.

Dog-friendly holiday

As a rule, dogs must be kept on a leash in the nature. During the summer, from April 1 until September 30, dogs have to be on the leash when on the beach. From October 1 until March 31 dogs are allowed to run free on the beach, as long as they do not bother or harm others. Here you will find dog-forests, where the dogs may run freely:

A feast for all the senses at Åkjærsgård

Less than three km from Rønde in the beautiful hilly landscape, called Smouen Alper by the locals, you find Åkjærsgård – a combined garden centre, farm shop and vineyard with a broad selection of things for your home, your garden and your tummy. The previous cowshed is today a nice shop with old furniture, lush plants and lots of handicraft.

Plants and a vineyard

Many of the plants are rare varieties, which are hard to find anywhere else. Lots of pretty dwarf maple trees in big tubs, some of them more than 25 years old, are waiting for a new home – together with lots of other interesting plants and shrubbery.

Åkjærsgård is a family-owned busines through 7 generations, and the farm is also a vineyard. On the fields surrounding the property grow walnut trees, sweet chestnut trees and many different fruit bushes, and of course grapes, which are the transformed into award-winning wine, both rosé, white wines

and sparkling wines. They can be purchased in the farm shop, along with other delicacies.

A feast for all the senses

Åkjærsgård is a true Eldorado if you like to discover new things and get inspiration for your home and garden. Already the drive through the hilly and green landscape is wonderful and combined with the special atmosphere of the place and the inspiring surroundings, a visit at Åkjærsgård is a feast for all the senses.

Visit the homepage to see opening hours, a route description and upcoming events. If you want to take a guided tour around the vineyard combined with a wine tasting, you are welcome to call and make an appointment.

A guided tour and wine tasting like in southern Europe

You come to Andersens Winery in Vrinners on Mols, and you feel like being on a vineyard in southern Europe. A lovely scent from the big fermentation tanks is filling the chilly room. One of the employees is ready to start the guided tour, telling visitors everything about the complex process: from the raw fruit until the sparkling wine is ready to be enjoyed.

Andersen Winery is using the old method “Methode Traditionelle”, which has its origin in Champagne in France. The final fermentation is happening in the bottle, which over a long period is turned very slowly. Then the remaining yeast is removed, and the bottle is closed with a cork. Afterwards the wine is stored between 9 and 45 months.

After the guided tour guests can taste the wines. Already the first sample proves, that this is sparkling wine of superb quality. If you wouldn’t look at the label, you would think it is actually made from grapes. The following samples are stronger in colour and have the distinctive taste of rhubarb, raspberries, gooseberries and other fruits and berries.

All sparkling wines from Andersen Winery are made from apples or other fruits and berries, and some are a mix of different fruits. They contain typically between 10 and 12% alcohol. If you must drive home, you can taste the wines with less alcohol – they are excellent, even though they only contain around 2% alcohol.

Not only tourists and locals visit Andersen Winery. Businesses, sommeliers and apprentices come to learn more about the fantastic sparkling fruit wines, which are served in exclusive restaurants all over Europe and sold in more than 100 shops in Denmark. They are also exported to several countries in Europe and Asia.

During the summer Andersen winery is open daily, with up to four guided tours a day. You can come without pre-booking a guided tour, which lasts 45 minutes. Most of the visitors purchase some bottles afterwards to enjoy at home.

Hylkegaard

Hylkegaard is like taken out of a nostalgic movie and full of experiences. The farm is a vineyard, where the white wine variety Solaris is cultivated.

In the farm shop, besides the wine, you find own products, such as aquavit, walnut schnapps stored in oak barrels, own grappa (in a class of its own), honey and marmalades as well as Danish sparkling wine made from the farm’s grapes and fruit (traditional method) and many other things.

Hylkegaard is importing wine and special oils from France, Italy, Austria and Germany.

Using the barn as a rustic setting, we have established a gallery, which shows modern Danish art.

Of course, there are plenty of tasting samples. You can book a guided tour of the vineyard and learn more about the production of Danish wine, and you can also order lunch and an extended wine tasting.

We are looking forward to seeing you.

Djursland – wildly tasty

Djursland is a bulging larder and offers exquisite products produced by locals passionate about what they do. Here, you will find taste experiences for the family with young children whom would like to have genuine adventures, and for couples seeking high-quality food products.

Taste the love of food

If you would like to have a picnic in the wonderful landscape, you can pick up your meal at many restaurants, or you stop by a bakery, butcher’s shop or fishmonger and put your meal together yourself. Local produce of high quality is found in abundance along roadsides, at markets and in shops. Both on the island of Anholt and on the mainland, Norway lobster is landed all summer and can be enjoyed in the local restaurants or bought to take home for a barbecue.

Have a farm shop expedition

Djursland is filled with farm shops, many of them organic. Here, you can buy and taste our produce – right at the barn door. In many of these places, you can also have a chat with the producer himself. It is exciting to taste fresh produce and

at the same time hearing the story why the wine, the cider, the vegetables, the chocolate or the beef also is delivered to leading restaurants all over the world. So, if you want to do the cooking yourself, there is a wealth of opportunities for filling your hamper with super fresh, local produce.

Pick your own food

Many growers of berries, fruits and vegetables provide the opportunity to pick your own food directly in the field or plantation – this is truly fresh food. Both children and adults will love it. You will also find plenty of opportunities for picking berries and mushrooms of the season in nature, and along roads and paths.

Lots of choice and friendly service

In the little village Egens Havhuse you find the family-owned smoke house Mols Røgeri, which offers a wide choice of fish and delicacies of high quality. Visitors are welcome to sit on one of the 10 tables in the courtyard and enjoy their packed lunches, combined with some delicacies from the shop. The smoke house and shop are only a few hundred meters away from the famous Kalø castle ruin. Take a walk out to the remains of the old castle and enjoy a lunch afterwards at the smoke house – or buy some fish and other delicacies to take home.

See the smoking ovens and have a chat

The shop offers fish and seafood of high quality, sourced carefully by suppliers at Danish fish auctions. The salmon comes from the Faeroe Islands and Denmark, and the prawns are peeled by hand. Thomas has been the smoke master for the last 20 years, smoking fish and sea food in his own smokers which he is happy to show visitors and tell them about the art of smoking. Everything in the shop like remoulade, salads and

fried fish is made from scratch, and the recipe for the fishcakes is a family secret from 1985.

Open every day

A female regular explains: “I´m coming here because there is lots of things to choose from, the fish is fresh, and you get a very good service. It is a pleasant experience to do your shopping here”. And this is exactly what the brothers Thomas and Morten Bork want to offer their customers. Both have been helping their parents in the shop since they were children, and they know their trade.

No compromises are made when it comes to the quality of the fish and the other ingredients they use, and the smoke house and shop is open daily all year round, except the public holidays at Christmas and New Year.

Eat out, order takeaway or cook your own food

The growing interest in local produce can particularly be felt in Djursland, also called »the larder of Eastern Jutland«. Many growers and producers focus on new, innovative food of high quality, and more and more restaurants are keen to use local produce.

Everywhere on Djursland, you can find many interesting eating places. There is something for any taste and any budget. Djursland can offer anything from lovely Danish cuisine, pizzerias and buffet-restaurants to exotic eating places and gourmet restaurants.

Eating out

Eating out can mean lots of things in Djursland. There are both interesting restaurants and interesting food and beverages to be tasted. Kelp pesto, meat loaf, fresh smoked fish or a sweet treat – you decide if you want to go to a restaurant, cook in the summer house or bring a takeaway meal to the beach and enjoy the sunset.

Grandfather’s best food

A good example for the different food styles you can enjoy in Djursland is the restaurant of Hotel Crone at the harbour in Grenaa. They serve Danish food with all the traditions. Tasty meals which could have been cooked by your granny, served with love and in generous portions with a fantastic taste and lots of good ingredients!

You can order a la carte or try the Danish dishes, f. ex. »Æggekage«, »Pariserbøf« or »Tarteletter«, and everything can be ordered as takeaway, too.

Unique jewellery with opals from the own gem mine

You must travel all the way down to southern Germany to find a bigger choice of opals than what Jensen Opals in Ebeltoft can offer their customers. Opal lovers from the whole of Denmark as well as Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands are visiting the Helle and Hans Jensen’s shop to find a perfect piece of opal jewellery.

Opals are special gemstones, as they shift their colour and pattern depending on the angle you look at them and the reflexion of the light. They are the chameleons amongst the gemstones and every piece of jewellery is one of a kind, as the stone gives the impulses for the design.

Opals from the mine and on the table

You can choose from the wide selection of jewellery in the shop, but it is also possible to find the opal of your dreams and design a piece of jewellery together with Helle, which is then handmade by a skilled goldsmith.

Once every year Hans is visiting the gem mine of the couple near

Lightning Ridge in Australia. Here he is amongst others mining the very rare and coveted black opal. In the shop you find also opals from other parts of Australia.

Helle and Hans have established a stonecutting workshop, where the raw opals are transformed into sparkling gems. Helle is one of the few stone cutters in the world with a special education in cutting opals. Together with the more expensive pieces you get an authenticity certificate and a certificate of the origin of the stone. The customers appreciate that the owners are involved in the whole process, all the way from mining the raw opals until the finished piece in the shop window.

Even jewellery without opals

The couple are also selling jewellery without opals and watches in different price ranges in their shop, which you find in Ebeltoft, Adelgade 37.

Authentic harbour atmosphere combined with lots of things going on

The old fishing harbour is still active and has transformed into an attractive area, where fishermen, carpenters, glass blowers, restaurants and delis work page by side. The atmosphere is special and full of diversity, and you can both chat with a boat enthusiast at the quay and enjoy a good lunch with your friends – accompanied by the scent of tar and smoked fish.

You can jump into the water from the bathing jetty and the place is a perfect start for a trip with a kayak or SUP-board. The town and the harbour are closely connected, and the many old wooden ships make for a fantastic maritime scenery, so a walk along the sea front always is a great experience – made even more spectacular by the breath-taking view over the hills of Mols Bjerge on the other page of the bay. At Skudehavnen, you can enjoy yourselves catching crabs in maritime surroundings.

Ebeltoft – Denmark’s cosiest market town

With its slanting, half-timbered houses, cobbles and blooming hollyhocks, Ebeltoft is one of Denmark’s most charming towns. The square and the old town hall, Det Gamle Rådhus, form the heart of Ebeltoft, and they are the setting of many activities during the year.

Ebeltoft apple tree

The name Ebeltoft comes from the Danish word »æble« (apple) – Ebeltoft is a piece of land with apple trees. On the streets and squares, big, beautiful concrete apples, carved in stone, decorate the city. The main shopping street of the town is called Adelgade and holds Farvergården, which is one of Ebeltoft’s most impressive half-timbered houses.

Farvergården is the only preserved urban dyeing house in Northern Europe.

Maltfabrikken (The Malt Factory) – a living culture factory

Since its transformation from an industrial facility in decay into a living culture factory, Maltfabrikken has received both

international recognition and the whole-hearted support of the local community. It has a central location in Ebeltoft and is a hub for trade, public services and cultural events, and of high benefit for everyone.

National park with town and nature

With its unique historical urban environment and nature, the town of Ebeltoft forms part of the national park along with Mols Bjerge. Here you find Karpenhøj Naturcenter, which rents out mountain bikes and other outdoor equipment, and you can go on a guided tour in Mols Bjerge with a nature guide, stay overnight at a primitive camp, and much more. You also have the option to experience Mols Bjerge on horseback.

Explore the nature around Ebeltoft

The area around Ebeltoft offers many different shopping opportunities, for example ceramics, paintings, glass art and organic produce from the nearby farm shops. At Femmøller Strand market carts offer local products during the summer weeks and kitchen enthusiasts can expand their selection of exclusive kitchen equipment.

Music Mecca with instruments, light and sound

Today, DanGuitar.dk is Denmarks biggest seller of music instruments. In 2014, Thomas Svenstrup bought the big industrial building which contains the entire company today. Right away he saw the potential for establishing the business with an impressive showroom which contains all kinds of musical instruments, sound and light systems, mixing tables and recording studio equipment. From classical brands to new producers. For young and old. For beginners and intermediates. Today, the internet shop has grown significantly and is also selling directly in Norway and Sweden at DanMusikk.no and DanGuitar.se.

A wide selection

Everyone is welcome in the huge music supermarket in Grenaa, where musicians and music enthusiasts can go exploring. „You can come and test all our music instruments, light and sound systems. Playing music is a passion for a lot of people. Therefore, it is important that our clients can listen to and feel the instruments before they buy them. As we play music

ourselves, we can offer personal and professional service and good advice, so you end up buying a product that suits your needs. And you always get a good coffee, when you pop in.” Thomas is very conscious that an internet shop should be price competitive. He follows the price fluctuations on the internet on a regular basis to find just the right (low) prices. And the prices in the shop are the same as on the internet, even though it is possible to »feel« the goods.

Get your holiday purchase sent home to you

Thomas knows the tourists may not have room in their car to take the new musical instruments home with them. “Fortunately, the internet shop is very efficient. If you order before 3:30 PM on a weekday, we can send all products in stock the same day. It is also possible to choose a specific delivery day, in order to receive the package when you come home after your holiday.”

The vibrant capital of Djurslands

The trading town Grenaa is the biggest town in Djursland with a great variety of shops offering branded articles you won’t find other places on the peninsula. At the cosy cafés and restaurants in town you will find new energy when you are hungry. Sankt Gertrud’s Church, unofficially referred to as Grenaa Church marks the square, and from here you find the shops in the connected pedestrian streets.

The town has grown during the industrialisation and developed into a central town with important public functions, suburban train connection to Aarhus, educational institutions and a solid trade and business basis. Derelict industrial buildings have been converted into modern spaces with references to – and respect for – the rich industrial history of Grenaa.

Activities in the town centre

On a walk through town you find beautifully preserved, halftimbered houses, multi-level building and modern architecture. The town centre is bound together by the big, open town square, where the kids can play while you can enjoy a drink, listen to live music almost daily during July, visit the flea market and take part in lots of other activities.

In Smedestræde not far from Lillegade, you find The Old Smithy, Den gamle Smedie, where the smith swings his hammer at the forge every Tuesday from 13-15.30 during the summer. w handelgrenaa.dk

Art and culture

Throughout the year, you can visit art exhibitions at the Town Hall, the culture centre Kulturhuset Pavillonen and the mill Baunhøj Mølle. In several locations, you can listen to live music, enjoy a freshly tapped beer, and visit a bar or discotheque. Pavillonen offers a broad cultural programme with concerts, stage plays and more. w pavillonen.dk

The town at kids’ level

If you have children with you, it can be wonderful to have a break from shopping and town life. Eat your packed lunches in the town centre in the park across from Pavillonen or enjoy the atmosphere by the duck pond. The forest lake in the plantation, the nature playground in the woods or the playground at the marina are other child-friendly spots. Or what about a trip to the bowling centre, if it’s raining?

Enjoy a good time in Grenaa

The biggest town in Djursland has a lot to offer, all year round. Grenaa is like a big shopping centre with a wide selection of wellknown chains and interesting small shops.

“We want tourists to feel that Grenaa is a dynamic and vibrant merchant town, when they come here,” as Hanne Rasmussen, chairman of Grenaa trade association, explains.

“Grenaa is a town for the whole family. There are lots of things going on all year round, but especially in the summer season there is pressure with markets and live music on the Square.

Also, the good cooperation with Norddjurs municipality and other organisations make sure there is lots of life in the town. For example, on the last Friday in August there is the street music festival Grenaa Gademusiker Festival, and the whole town is full of street musicians from both Denmark and abroad. And in week 30 we also host the local version of the European Street Market with street food from the whole of Europe,” tells Hanne enthusiastically.

Smiles and good service

The shops in Grenaa offer good and friendly service. You get friendly and professional advice and a smile on the way, when you leave the shop. And it is easy to come to Grenaa by car, as there is lots of free parking space with a short distance to the many shops.

Say hi to Kirsten at the Tourist Information

Maybe you need a place to stay for the night. Or you just want to know what is going on in and around Grenaa, while you are here. Take a tour to the tourist information in the pretty pink building which used to be the townhall, right at the market square. Here you will often meet Kirsten Rinhack, which has a vast knowledge of the local area and is the local oracle in the tourist information.

Holiday memories that will last

Small children are pressing their nose against the window, while the parents are standing behind them, waiting for the big moment. And then it happens: the boy on the rotating platform is passing the girl and they kiss. Then he must take another round, before they can kiss again. The young lovers have been doing so since 1969.

You can see the kissing dolls in the window of Goldsmith Mouritsen at the town square in Grenaa. They moved in on October 1 last year, when the brand-new jeweller´s shop opened – not only the biggest in Djursland, but also the only one with a watchmaker´s workshop.

The town hall clock on your wrist

Find jewellery from Maanesten, featuring only real gemstones, Aqua Dulce with pearls and customer-friendly prices or Sif Jakobs and her distinctive cool Nordic design.

If you choose a watch from Danish brand Bering, you also choose scratch-resistant glass – and several of their collections support charity. And why not choosing the clock of the national

bank or the town hall in Aarhus from Arne Jacobsen as your new watch? Or maybe you prefer Jaguar Festina or another famous brand?

Coffee and getting your ears pierced

The friendly staff is always ready to give you advice and there is no hurry. Jewellery is a way of expressing your personality, and making the right choice is crucial. In case you made a wrong decision, you can always exchange your purchase.

If you buy your very first pair of earrings you can also get your ears pierced in the shop. Especially with children it is a good idea to take both ears in one go, but the children need to be at least 6 years old.

Goldsmith Mouritsen makes you always feel welcome, and while you are waiting, if you f. ex. need a new battery in your watch, they treat you to a good cup of coffee. You leave the shop with a good customer experience – and is there a better memory than one you can wear every day around your neck, on your finger or at your wrist? w .smykketid.dk

A world of furniture and accessories for the home

The big glass façade of SchmidtHuset in Kannikegade in the heart of Grenaa invites you to step into a world of furniture and interior items for everyone, all beautifully displayed on 3500 square metres on three levels.

When entering the shop, you start with the 300 m2 big Hay exhibition, showcasing the brands latest designs. When you afterwards pass the bedroom section and walk up the stairs, you find the workshop where everything started back in 1913, when Ejnar Schmidt began to produce furniture and coffins. Today the old workbench is standing side by side with danish design furniture, and one level up you find the outlet section where you can make a bargain.

New generation and new impulses

Jesper Schmidt took over in 2019 and is the fourth generation in the business. He has earlier worked with lighting and decorating big retail chain stores which clearly can be seen in the big furniture shop – it has been refurbished and the look is modern with high ceilings and music from brand new stereo

equipment. The range of furniture is handpicked from leading manufacturers like Skovby, Nielaus, Natuzzi and Stressless, combined with lighting from Le Klint and a wide range of home accessories from other companies.

If you should fall in a love with a sofa or something else and don’t have space in the car to take it home – don’t worry. SchmidtHuset is sending to the whole of Europe. And if you come home and regret you didn’t buy that sofa, you can order via their web shop.

Fairs and events

But there is more. The furniture shop has several times arranged events like fairs, political debates, fashion shows and even opera, and also during this season SchmidtHuset will offer interesting arrangements.

Follow SchmidtHuset on Facebook and Instagram for more information.

Town and nature – side by side

Not many towns the size of Grenaa offer such a varied nature so close to the urban areas. The stream Grenaa is flowing through the town and the green spaces, parks and many paths secure easy access to the forest, the beach and the heath.

Stream environment and urban beach

Guided tours

The tourist association of Djursland is arranging guided tours in the town centre and around the harbour of Grenaa – free of charge. Most of them are suited for all ages and wheelchair users. For more information, visit Grenaa Tourist–information or www.djurslandsturistforening.dk

Follow the cosy path along the stream Grenåen from the harbour to the town or the other way. The stream connects the marina and Grenaa beach, often called one of the best beaches in Denmark, with the town and continues past Grenaa golf course and into Kolindsund. The stretch from the harbour to Enslevgården (about 6 km) is pretty and rich in variety, and many locals take the tour on the river Grenå in a canoe or kayak. From the romantic white bridges at the culture centre Kulturhuset Pavillonen, the

stream moves through the town, along residential areas and past the interesting new residential area Åbyen, which was established on an artificial island and provides a recreative and green urban space, perfect for hanging out and relaxing. During the high season you can use the city bus free of charge. It is taking you from the town centre to the harbour and the Kattegatcentre and back. w .midttrafik.dk

Active with maps in Grenaa town and surrounding areas

Grenaa is a very green town with a well-developed network of tracks for hikers, joggers, cyclists and riders. Among other things, you will find the challenging 12 km long singletrack mountain bike trail in the plantation.

At the tourist information office in downtown, you can get a map of Grenaa Plantation and Fuglsang Heath with marked running and hiking routes. Here, you can also pick up a guide to sculpture and nature experiences in Norddjurs Municipality, outdoor experiences, map of Djursland including all bike and hiking trails and many other special brochures.

Many locals take the tour to Enslevgården on the river Grenå on paddleboard, in a canoe or kayak

Authentic harbour environment and play at the town beach

Grenaa harbour consists of four harbour environments – fishing harbour, modern marina marina, commercial port and ferry port. From the ferry port you can take a Stena Line ferry to Halmstad in Sweden, and a second ferry takes you to the island of Anholt. Close to the ferry port, you will find restaurants and an opportunity to buy smoked fish from the fishmonger. The marina has holiday homes and restaurants as well as a large playground. From here you can enjoy the view of Grenaa’s 7 km long sandy beach – the beach is family-friendly and has excellent facilities.

Safety for water enthusiasts

At Katholm Strandvej you find parking spaces, toilets and showers. At Dronningens Ferieby, there is a bridge and a ramp for easy access to the water for wheelchair users. TrygFonden

Viewing spots and offshore wind farm

From several places at the harbour in Grenaa and at the lighthouse Fornæs Fyr, you can often see 111 offshore wind turbines rising like towers from the sea. It is Anholt Havmøllepark – the third largest offshore wind farm in the world and Denmark’s second largest. At Fornæs Fyr, there are benches and good opportunities to enjoy the view.

Experiences at the harbour

Kattegatcentret is located at Grenaa harbour and opened a brandnew facility for penguins in 2022. Also, it is here you find the Kystog Fjordcentret’s high-speed dinghy, Havørnen (the Sea Eagle), which is offering tours during the summer.

In the dunes close to the marina you find Grenaa Naturskole, the location of the Blue Flag centre station. The nature guides offer activities along the coasts of Grenaa and North Djursland as well as trips in kayaks and fishing equipment.

Hotel Marina is “the hotel of the town”

Hotel Marina has always had a special place in the heart of the locals, all the way back to the 60ies, when it was built. With its location close to the forest, the sea and the heath, it looks like a modern version of the classic seaside hotel.

It has always been here, where you were eating dinner after a day at the beach, where you had big family gatherings and where both political and business agreements were made over a good meal. The hotel is still a meeting point for the locals as well as for tourists and is now part of Danske Hoteller.

Homemade and local food

The restaurant is open to the public, and the food is served from the kitchen or directly from the big barbecue. You can enjoy your meal on the big terrace overlooking the beach and the sea and admire the beautiful sunset on a warm summer evening.

The chef is using local produce, and all bread is homemade. The menu for children offers a great variety of tasty meals, and the

smoked salmon and meat dishes are famous beyond the city borders of Grenaa.

Marina is hosting a whole range of special events with a special menu, f. ex. the big Easter buffet which leaves nothing left to desire – and beverages are included.

Fitness and Wellness

The modern fitness facilities offer everything you need for training your body, or you can visit the wellness area with swimming pool, sauna, steam bath and jacuzzi. The perfect place to leave all stress behind and just relax. It is also possible to book massage, different types of therapy and wellness treatments.

Desert, Ørkenen, which represents a unique piece of nature in Denmark and the largest heathland-desert of Scandinavia. You find three different types of landscape on the island: a landscape formed by glaciers, coastline and dramatic dunes. The lush and the wild desert.

43 Grenaa D8 page 37 99

You find both peace and quiet and an active harbour environment with restaurants at the quay and live music on the long summer evenings. On a trip through the land, from the harbour to the town, several cosy sites and locations appear. Summer life on Anholt also means a kite surfer event, a music festival, lobster days, Danish folk high school and »Langt Ude på Anholt« – an art festival with scenic art chaos, and a marathon race. All year round you can learn more about the history of the island at Anholt museum, and you can go on guided hikes or sightseeing tours.

There is only one daily ferry service to Anholt from Grenaa, which means that, fortunately, you will have to stay overnight before returning.

Already on the ferry you will notice that you feel more and more relaxed. Both nature and the locals have adapted to the fact that there is sea as far as the eye can reach – no matter in which direction you are looking. Thus, the keywords for a visit to the most isolated community in Denmark are contemplation, nature and simple living.
Anholt is worth a visit all year round!

Pilgrimage – a hike to soothe body and soul

Put your hiking boots on and experience the wonderful nature and the many cultural treasures in Djursland at close range. If you choose a modern pilgrimage, it will give the tour an added dimension and combine the physical aspects with reflexion and calming down your mind.

Do you want more than experiencing nature and diving into the cultural history of the area? Maybe you are looking for a way to get time for reflexion and want some quiet time? Then maybe you should try going on a pilgrimage. As a pilgrim you combine the physical and mental aspects to achieve a harmonious experience for body and mind. You feel the surroundings with all your senses, the shifting scenery and the singing birds, while you are following the repetitive rhythm of your footsteps and find peace to reflect on things.

Pilgrimages are an ancient tradition, which has been rediscovered by the church in recent years. Even in Djursland

the churches are offering guided tours in the giant cathedral called nature. A pilgrimage, alone or in the company of others, offers a break from the daily routine full of stress, gadgets and a never-ending stream of news. Only one day, or even a couple of hours, on a pilgrimage are enough to give you a sense of calmness and peace of mind. The benefits? A better well-being and more energy to tackle the daily routine.

Luckily, a pilgrimage can be many things, and you can choose one that fits exactly your needs and wishes. Alone or together with others on a guided tour. You are welcome, no matter if mindfulness, a sense of community or finding calmness is your main goal. Here are three examples which offer you lots of exciting experiences.

From church to church in Norddjurs

Sankt Gertruds path is 80 km long, and the starting point is Grenaa church at the town square in Grenaa. But you can plan your own route and start wherever it suits you. The whole route is divided into 16 legs, leading from church to church. The path is winding through forests and along old roads, and you pass Sostrup Castle and Karlby Klint. Everywhere you are surrounded by ancient cultural landscape with traces of human life dating back thousands of years. Tables, benches and shelters on the way are perfect for a break or even for spending the night.

From The church of Kolind Sund to the wonders of Midtdjurs

Kolind church is the starting point for regular guided pilgrimages. The tour starts with a short prayer meeting in the church, followed by a couple of songs and the presentation of the theme of the day, f. ex. slow living, freedom or light-

heartedness. You can choose between a long and a short tour and enjoy the beautiful nature in the drained Kolindsund, which is full of cultural history and has many beautiful churches. On the way is room for both conversations, calmness and silence.

Mols – find the high and the holy Mols Bjerge national park is an area of outstanding beauty with hills, valleys and fantastic views. Starting point for the pilgrimages, which are guided by the local vicar, is either the church in Agri or one of the other churches on Mols. The hilltops Agri Baunehøj and Trehøje offer breath-taking panoramic views, and the area around Helligkilde is perfect to reflect about the deeper values in life.

Rønde – port to the magical hills of Mols Bjerge

The town has been growing in recent years, due to its attractive location between Aarhus and the recreative Mols Bjerge national park. It offers speciality shops, good supermarkets, restaurants and cafés, all with a homely environment and personal service. There are many activities in the town throughout the year. Syddjurs Egnsteater is part of Kulturhotellet, which is the town’s culture and civic centre and focal point for theatre, art, concerts, talks, etc. Behind the high street there’s a nature playground and a large town park with outdoor training facilities. There are parking spaces in and around the main street. w .roendehandel.dk

Trip to Kalø Slotsruin

Only 2 km from Rønde lies Kalø Slotsruin, an old fortress, which was built on a desert island in Kalø Vig. Today, the castle ruin is a favourite place of excursion for both locals and tourists. Via an interior staircase inside the tower, you can climb your way to the top of the castle ruin and enjoy the view of Mols Bjerge.

Nature and culture meet at Kalø

There are more than 100 ancient sites dating back to the Stone Age and the Bronze Age in the beautiful beech forests and landscapes around the inlet Kalø Vig. From the Bronze Age burial mound Store Baunehøj and from the beautiful Late Gothic church

Bregnet Kirke, you get a fantastic view of Kalø Vig to Mols Bjerge. For nice, child-friendly sandy beaches visit Nappedam Marina and Følle Strand.

Go on explorations in the landscape

Visit Agri with the highest-situated lake in Denmark and the impressive cliffs at Mols Hoved and Isgård. Bring a bucket and a fishing rod to catch crabs at Knebelbro, at the marina in Skødshoved or put your boat in the water and take a memorable sailing trip. The most child-friendly bathing beach of the area is Begtrup Vig.

The peninsula of Helgenæs

If you leave Mols, the road leads to Dragsmur and the peninsula of Helgenæs. In the beautiful, undulating landscape you find interesting nature areas as well as ancient monuments. On foot, you can follow the coastline all the way around the peninsula. From the car park, there is a path to Ellemandsbjerget, which is the highest point of the peninsula. At the tip, you find the lighthouse, Sletterhage Fyr, surrounded by a stony beach and deep waters. A path along the beach leads to Tyskertårnet from World War II. From here you have a view of the island Samsø and, in particularly clear weather, Sjælland and Fyn.

Kirsten Solis and Babak Azmoudeh have built a detached house in a calm neighbourhood in Mørke, where they live with their two sons, Luca (4 years) and Liam (1 year). They have everything they need close by – school, kindergarten, supermarket and wonderful nature. And there are also economic advantages for the family, who moved to Mørke from Aarhus.

“We have more space, and if we still lived in Aarhus, we would not be able to afford a car. You get much more for your money here. It is easy to get to Aarhus by car, bus or train, and both Randers and Ebeltoft are not far away. We have a supermarket in town, and Hornslet is close enough to take the bike”, tells Baba Azmoudeh.

The family loves to travel and with Aarhus Airport only being a stone throw away, it is easy to go on holiday. The most important thing though are the children and their wellbeing, as well a good local community. The childcare offers are excellent, with no waiting lists – perfect for a family with small children.

A great place to live

“When the boys are old enough, they can walk to school on their own without crossing any big roads. And the school playground is open to the public during the weekends and school holidays, and the place is clean and tidy. And then there is lots of beautiful nature in Suddjurs”, explains Kirsten Solis.

In the summer the family enjoys a trip to Ebeltoft or to Følle beach, only 10 minutes away by car and a fantastic place to swim and catch crabs. A walk to Kalø castle is a popular pastime, too. At home in Mørke they enjoy the good neighbourhood, where you know and help each other.

“We really feel welcome here. It is a fantastic place to live, especially for families with children. And even if you don´t have kids yet, you will be surprised how much the town can offer you. It´s a nice place to live”, the couple says.

A paradise for everyone interested in interiors and gastronomy

Are you into stylish interiors, gastronomy equipment, home textiles of superior quality or delicacies to lift your cooking to a new level? Then you should visit Huset Frost. Make sure to have enough time to browse the stylish shop, and afterwards you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and cake in their new café.

You might think the shop in Femmøller Strand is very expensive when looking at the exclusive interior design, but you are wrong. The prices are very reasonable considering the high quality Huset Frost is offering, and you don´t find the products anywhere else in Djursland.

An excellent customer experience – that is the focus point of the shop. As a customer you feel instantly welcome, and the service is excellent. The staff is friendly and helpful, always ready to give good advice. The atmosphere is warm and positive, and people leave the shop and café with a smile on their face.

Inspiration and a good customer experience

All products are handpicked by the owners, Hanne and Brian Frost, and you will most likely meet them behind the counter

when visiting the shop. The gastronomic equipment is from BUYER – the company is famous for manufacturing the best frying pans in the world. The textiles are from LIBECO, exclusive linen which is produced with respect for the nature and our climate. And did you know that linen is a superior material for bedding?

Huset Frost can send your purchases, and of course they can be exchanged. This doesn´t happen very often though, during the five years the shop has existed, only a handful of things have been exchanged, and they were Christmas gifts. Another proof of the high quality, and many customers are regulars who are more than content with their purchases.

Everyone who is staying in Djursland and has an interest in gastronomy and interiors should visit Huset Frost – even if you only need inspiration. During the summer the shop is open daily, except Mondays.

By the sea on the north coast of Djursland

Porpoises

Especially from April to October you can be lucky and observe porpoises on the coast of Djursland – good spots are the north coast, the south tip of Helgenæs and the fjord of Randers. The small whales can dive up to 200 m deep und hold their breath for 6-8 minutes.

The »gold« of the north coast

Discover the impressive limestone cliffs at Karlby and Sangstrup and go hunting for fossilised sea urchins. These areas are great points of departure for kayak trips, fishing and learning about nature. The Stone Age burial, Tustrup Oldtidsminder, places further into the countryside, dolmens constitute one of the most beautiful ancient historical monuments in Denmark with a very special atmosphere.

Gjerrild – a charming railway village

At the top of Djursland you find Gjerrild, a town full of cosy vibes, charm and a grocer driven by the locals. Here you find peacefulness, beautiful woods and child-friendly sandy beaches.

The cycle and hiking trail Gjerrildbanestien follows the old railway line through the woods and open landscapes and goes today from from Gjerrild to Ryomgård.

The cosy active harbour village Bønnerup

Enjoy the authentic atmosphere of a coastal village in Bønnerup with its old fishermen´s houses and the active fishing and yachting harbour, which features several eateries and shopping facilities. Kayakers can easily access the water and paddle right out on the Kattegat. The nature guides from Kyst- og Fjordcentret are ready

with a fishing net and good advice on what you can catch in the harbour basin. And if you are not lucky to catch anything, the wellassorted local fishmonger is happy to help out.

The holiday village near Fjellerup Beach

Fjellerup is a popular holiday spot with a child-friendly beach, a bathing jetty, soft sand, dunes and Blue Flag Centre Fjellerup. On days with a brisk wind, Fjellerup becomes an attractive area for surfers. At Oplevelsesplads Fjellerup there are showers and drying facilities as well as a car park for unloading and loading gear. Behind the dunes of the beach you will find the holiday homes in a large natural area with forest.

Glesborg – the centre of Northern Djursland

In Glesborg you find grocery shops, and, during summer, there are activities on the square. The town is perfectly located for tourists and summer cottage guests in the area. The church Glesborg Kirke is often referred to as the dome of Djursland, because it is much bigger than most village churches in the area.

THE NORTHERN COAST

The church bells are ringing, and another wonderful day is lying ahead. Maybe a trip to the wonderful, child-friendly beach with shallow water that is warming up quickly in the summer. Or maybe a walk in the woods or on the trail to Bønnerup, and later a nice meal in a local restaurant.

The shallow waters are perfect for children, who can play for hours as long as an adult is keeping an eye on them. And if they want to try something new, you can borrow equipment to catch crabs and prawns from one of the nature guides, as well as a kayak. Here is a perfect spot to try and paddle a kayak for the first time.

Fjellerup Seje Sild is an association of volunteers who are knitting all kind of pretty stuff which they are selling at

Bundgarnmuseet. And Thomasminde is arranging events for all those who like to train and keep fit.

Good food and accommodation

When you are hungry, try the delicious food from the food truck Mosters2go. Afterwards a little walk on the footpath to Bønnerup or in the forest will help you digesting. Fjellerup also has a well assorted local supermarket, DagliBrugsen, with a lovely playground nearby – Fjollehaven. If you want to eat out, there are several good restaurants, or maybe you prefer delicious ice cream at Vaffelbageriet?

If you need accommodation, there are both the campsite, and Kulturkroen, a nice B&B. The local holiday home agency Feriepartner Djursland is renting out summerhouses in close cooperation with Feriepartner Ebeltoft. Both are your guaranty for good holiday experiences in one of their fantastic holiday homes all over Djursland.

The sun is shining from a bright sky while the family is quietly paddling their canoes on the river Alling å in the nature park Randers Fjord. The bikes of the family are parked in Allingåbro, down by the river at Lunden, where you also find shelters, boardwalk and a fireplace. The father and older brother noticed immediately that this also was a fine spot for fishing – but not today.

After the canoe tour the family is having lunch in one of the two pizzerias in town, and afterwards they are splitting up. The mother wants to browse the five charity shops in town, and the father is keen to visit the vintage car museum together with the older brother. The younger sister wants to visit Det Kreative Hus and look at the doll clothes.

Shopping in the bakery and in the supermarket

Distances are short in Allingåbro, so it´s easy for the family to gather again afterwards. It has been a fantastic day, and before they drive home, they find some good bread and buy groceries for diner in the local supermarket, Brugsen. On the way back to their bikes the father says: “One day here

was really not enough. I would like to come again and spend more time here, then I could also play a round of golf.” The others agree immediately. But next time they will take the car, which is no problem since there is plenty of free parking space available in Allingåbro. Today they have been taking the bike along the asphalted bike path Banesti, which is leading to Ryomgård and further as a gravelled path all the way to Gjerrild.

Looking forward to try the rail bike

The younger sister would like to spend a night in the shelter down by the river, the older brother thinks the train carriages, which were converted into guest houses are really cool, and the mother would like to try the historic hotel from 1876, which now is a cosy B&B.

On the way home the older brother suggests they should try a tour with the rail bike to Randers next time. The others are keen on the idea. The younger sister is already looking forward to coming home and telling all her friends about the exciting time they had in Allingåbro – a perfect day for the whole family. w .allingaabro-portalen.dk

STRANDGUIDE

Ahl Strand

Ahl Strand – The kite surfers’ favorite beach

One of Denmark’s best kite surfing places which attracts both kite surfers and those, who just want to watch the colourful screens slide across the low waters. Watching the sunset with Mols Bjerge in the dramatic background is fascinating.

Vibæk Strand

Vibæk Strand – The beach close to Ebeltoft

Shallow water and good waves for surfing make Ebeltoft Vig a favourite place among windsurfers, and precisely the beach Vibæk Strand is easily accessible. The beach stars a Blue Flag, a beach volley field, and during the summer weeks, there are activities with nature guides at the experience hot spot. The beach is generally very child-friendly, and the water here is warmer than at other beaches.

Femmøller Strand

Femmøller Strand – Experience bathing at the foot of Mols Bjerge

Femmøller Beach is one of the bathing areas in Denmark with historical traditions. It is a fine and child-friendly family beach with all facilities, including Blue Flag. There is plenty of room for beach life, and the beach is a good point of departure for trips in Mols Bjerge.

Skødshoved Strand

Skødshoved Strand – Playground for everyone

Pretty beach and harbour and one of the favourites on Mols, with life at the harbour, sailing boats, wind- and kite surfers and swimmers. Good facilities and easy parking. A bit further north the atmosphere is different, and you find a child-friendly, typical summer cottage beach. The northern part of the beach is popular, too, but still more quiet. Especially charming on a lovely summer evening, where you can enjoy the view with the setting sun over Aarhus.

Fjellerup Strand

Fjellerup Strand – Bathing area suitable for children

Blue Flag Centre, summer life, huge ice-cream cones – Fjellerup is one of the most popular bathing beaches in Djursland and very child-friendly. Here are wide sand dunes, and sandbank after sandbank ensure shallow water and a fine sandy floor – far out into the water. Near Thomasminde, you find the experience hot spot, Oplevelsesplads Fjellerup Strand; a popular place for surfers.

Egens Havhuse

Egens Havhuse – Wind surfing with Kalø Castle Ruin in the background

’The Hole’ is the part of Kalø Vig near Egens Havhuse which the wind surfers have invaded. When the wind is between West-Northwest and South-Southwest, they let their equipment loose on the waves. The little, almost puppet-like church, Egens Kirke is situated on a high hill with a view to Kalø Vig and Kalø Slotsruin.

Laid back luxury for the whole family
