Thousands of people, including Indonesian and foreign tourists, are trying to get off the island, the Associated Press reported. The quake was felt as far away as the neighboring island of Bali and was followed by a dozen aftershocks, including one on Monday morning (Aug. 6) that registered a magnitude of 5.4. It was the second deadly quake in a week to hit Lombok. On July 29, another earthquake killed 17 people, injured more than 160 and damaged hundreds of houses. Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because of its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin. In December 2004, a massive 9.1-magnitude earthquake off the island of Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

In other election news from around the country, Ohio voters rejected a GOP-passed right-to-work law. Republican voters might need to ask themselves if the GOP still represents their needs and wants – or if the GOP is working for America’s richest people. In Missouri and Kansas news, the deep-red state of Missouri rejected a right-to-work law. The General Assembly had passed a right-to-work law, but voters blocked it by a 2-to-1 ratio on Tuesday. Considering the poll numbers before the vote, this wasn’t a huge surprise. At press time, the results in the GOP primary race for governor of Kansas were so close that a winner hadn’t been declared. As of 6 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 8), only 541 votes separated Gov. Jeff Colyer and challenger/ current Secretary of State Kris Kobach. Much of the delay was related to significant problems in Johnson County’s ability to count votes. The outcome holds significant national implications. A Kobach loss would embarrass President Trump, who endorsed his informal adviser the day before polls closed. If you voted on Tuesday, thanks. If you didn’t have a chance to vote or aren’t registered to vote, remember that one of America’s most important midterm elections is coming up in November and you still have time to register. Please register so that your voice can be heard – and maybe provide a few more pleasant surprises.

Aircraft mechanic shares insights about Aeromexico plane crash By Chara

The announcement portended disaster for 17 people who were going about their day, unaware that it was their last. They came from Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana and Missouri; they died together in Table Rock Lake when the duck boat they boarded at 6:29 p.m. sank 40 minutes later. They didn’t have to die. Life jackets would have save some, if not all of them. According to statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard, 83 percent of drowning victims who were boating weren’t wearing life jackets. Robert Clifford, an attorney in a Chicagobased law firm that specializes in maritime cases told the media on July 21 that everyone aboard the ill-fated duck boat should’ve had life jackets on. He’s quoted as saying, “The minute they thought they were in trouble, they should have put on life jackets … You can certainly conjure up scenarios where a life jacket could have trapped someone (under the canopy), but the same can be said with seat belts in cars. At the end of the day, on average, you’re better off, and your survival rate is better if you’re wearing a life vest.” Missouri law requires boat passengers ages seven and younger to wear life jackets whenever they’re on the water, but commercial vessels, like the duck boat that sank on July 19, are exempt. Commercial vessels are only required by law to have enough flotation devices for all passengers and crew, and life jackets that fit every child on board. However, the 2018 edition of the handbook on Missouri boating laws and responsibilities directs captains how to prepare passengers for severe weather. Have everyone put on their U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket, and make sure they’re secured properly. The debate over the use of life jackets on amphibious tourist boats is long-standing. Yet, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), after investigating the capsizing of a duck boat in Arkansas in 1999, which claimed 13 lives, made these recommendations. Remove the canopies because they can obstruct evacuation and trap passengers on a sinking boat. Require all passengers on an excursion boat to wear life jackets during the tour. Sadly, the Coast Guard never implemented the recommendations, and the NTSB isn’t authorized to enact regulations. Duck boats are amphibious vessels used during World War II to transport troops and supplies from ships to shore. When they were modified as sightseeing crafts for tourists, canopies were added to provide shade and shield passengers from precipitation. They’re more vulnerable to being overcome by water when hit with high waves – as the doomed July 19 duck boat was – because they sit low in the water and, as the NTSB found, they lack buoyancy.

ome information about the July 31 Aeromexico plane crash has come to

light. As multiple news sources have reported, the plane crashed shortly after taking off in Durango, Mexico. The passengers and crew members survived by evacuating the airplane before it caught fire. Of the 103 passengers, 65 were U.S. citizens. Although the causes of the crash remain under investigation, 11 passengers have filed a lawsuit against the airline. Dos Mundos recently interviewed Carlos Suarez, an aircraft mechanic technician, who shared his insights about the accident. According to Suarez, the accident was caused by a combination of a pilot’s bad decision and a natural phenomenon known as wind shear, which is caused by an ascendant air flow. “The most critical moment of any flight is when it takes off,” Suarez said. “There are many factors taking place during takeoff, including the speed of the rotation. Once the airplane gets to the rotation speed, the pilot has to get into the air.” According to Suarez, wind shear “usually happens during takeoff and during landing.” “The only way to get through the wind shear … (is) that the pilot applies full pressure,” he said. This isn’t the first time this type of incident has happened. In 2016, a similar incident took place involving an Emirates Airlines plane. To avoid such incidents, the latest generation of planes have a system called predictive wind shear. With this system, a pilot can see if a plane is going through the wind shear phenomenon.

Dear Robbie, Based on the wording of your question, I can only believe you don’t think the adult child should be “burdened” to provide this assistance. My guess is you’re talking about one of your own parents. I understand that you might be aggravated with a parent who has been irresponsible with their money. But in my mind, there’s a bigger question. How big is the burden? I talked to a guy recently who was making $1.5 million a year. He was questioning whether he should help his dad — an older man in poor health, who didn’t handle his money well — by giving him $1,000 a month. There’s no question you give that guy money. You’re making millions, but you don’t want to help your sick dad? Come on! But if you bring home $2,000 a month, and your family is barely getting by, you’re not morally required to financially take care of a parent who was irresponsible with their money. It’s all relative. Do you have the money? Can you provide this help without placing an undue burden on yourself and your family? If the answer is yes, you may be asking more about your own aggravation than any sort of moral obligation. The lack of research has resulted in a lack of support and resources to help adult children navigate their parents’ divorce. Adult children of divorce face unique challenges. For starters, parents don’t try to shield them from anything, as they would if they were kids. Because both parents want their children to understand their pain and confusion, they don’t hold back from talking ill about the other partner. In a related matter, the little research on the topic shows that parents see their adult kids as friends more than they do as their children. This puts the adult children in a position where they feel like they must choose one parent over the other. Moreover, adult children must address logistical issues when their parents get divorced, such as where to spend their holidays and birthdays, and whether they should visit the more emotionally struggling parent more often. Many adult children also start doubting their own relationships and whether marriage or kids are the right paths for them. If you’re an adult child of divorce, here are some strategies to navigate your parents’ divorce, provided by various websites about the subject: *Keep your physical distance: It’s O.K. to help your parents, such as by cooking for them. But know when to stop. *Set clear emotional boundaries: Gently let them know that you can’t be the friend they come to when they need to discuss the divorce. Make it clear that talking ill about the other partner only causes you pain. *Strive to not let your parents’ divorce define your relationships with them: Enjoy pleasurable activities together. *Maintain contact with both extended families: They’re still your family, after all. *Let yourself feel whatever you need to feel: Talk to a therapist, support group or friend and give yourself time to heal. *Face your fear of commitment, if it exists: Embrace the notion that a commitment must be made with some degree of uncertainty. If you’re in that situation, I want you to do this one thing: Pay off those debts as quickly as possible! Here are some practical ways to get those student loans off your back as fast as you can: 1. Make (and stick to) a budget Yes, a budget! If you have no idea where your money is going every month, then it’s impossible to make sure you’re putting that hard-earned cash toward things that matter — like getting out of debt. With a monthly budget, you should be making sure your basic needs are taken care of — food, housing, utilities, transportation — and then paying off as much debt as possible. The budget will help you see how much you can put toward that debt. 2. Pay your smallest debts first

Consolidate your debts This is the only time I will ever tell you to use debt consolidation. A few guidelines: Make sure you consolidate into an interest rate that’s lower than the one you have now. Also, mentally prepare for a larger balance on your one loan. Two $20,000 loans would consolidate into one $40,000 loan. 4. Take an extra job or work overtime I know, I know. If you’re working a full-time job, the thought of working even more hours might wear you out. But remember, this is just temporary. The faster you get these loans paid off, the faster you can return to a sense of normalcy in your life. Moving forward, I want you to focus as much as possible on getting rid of those loans. All the money you send to Sallie Mae every month is money that could be going toward building your future — emergency savings, a down payment on a house, and retirement. Don’t let student loans hang around any longer. Be intentional, make a plan, and knock them out as quickly as possible!

s una gigantesca incongruencia que Andrés Manuel López Obrador, el Presidente electo de México, haya escogido como uno de sus principales colaboradores al responsable del fraude electoral de 1988. De verdad que no lo entiendo. ¿Dónde está el cambio que prometió? López Obrador designó a Manuel Bartlett para ser el nuevo director de la Comisión Federal de Electricidad. Supongo que es una forma de pagarle su apoyo durante la campaña electoral. Pero al hacerlo, López Obrador traiciona a muchos de los 30 millones de mexicanos que votaron por él y a su mensaje de cambio. Bartlett es más de lo mismo. Recordemos. Durante las elecciones presidenciales del 6 de julio de 1988, se “cayó el sistema” y se detuvo el reporte de resultados. Yo estuve ahí; nadie me lo contó. En esa época no había Instituto Nacional Electoral. La Secretaría de Gobernación se encargaba de organizar la elección y de contar los votos. Y el Secretario de Gobernación era Bartlett. Siete días después, cuando por fin se dieron a conocer los resultados, el “ganador” había sido el presidente Carlos Salinas de Gortari. Un fraude mayúsculo le arrebató la victoria al que hubiera sido el primer presidente de izquierda desde la Revolución mexicana, Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas. En dos ocasiones, luego de su presidencia, pude confrontar a Salinas de Gortari sobre la manera fraudulenta en que llegó a Los Pinos. (Aquí están las entrevistas: bit.ly/2vd5du7.) “¿Cómo ganó en 1.762 casillas con el 100% de los votos?” le pregunté. El asunto parecía matemáticamente imposible. Pero no para el Partido Revolucionario Institucional. “Yo creo que es importante recordar que en esa elección más de tres cuartas partes de las casillas fueron cubiertas por más de un partido y ahí está la documentación que así lo acredita”, me contestó Salinas de Gortari. Pero la trampa estuvo en otro lado. Nunca se pudo hacer un recuento — voto por voto — debido a que el Congreso, dominado por el Partido Revolucionario Institucional y apoyado por el Partido Acción Nacional, autorizó la quema de los votos en 1992. Fue el fraude perfecto. Los votos quedaron en cenizas. Bartlett nunca se opuso públicamente a la quema de votos, y fue premiado con la Secretaría de Educación durante el gobierno de Salinas de Gortari. Ese es el mismo Bartlett al que ahora López Obrador protege. ¿Por qué defender a quien retrasó 12 años la llegada de la democracia a México? Entiendo que un presidente tiene que ser pragmático y escoger a gente que le ayude a

since his election, more than a month ago. López Obrador has appointed Bartlett as the incoming director of Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission, which manages the governmentowned utility. I suppose that this is kind of a reward for Bartlett’s support during the campaign. But the appointment represents a betrayal for most of the 30 million Mexicans who voted for López Obrador and his message of change. Simply put, Bartlett represents more of the same. On July 6, 1988, the night of the election, Mexican officials famously announced that the ballot tabulation system had “crashed,” and results had stopped being reported across the country. I was there. I saw it firsthand. Back then, Mexico’s interior ministry ran national elections. And who was interior minister in 1988? Bartlett. Seven days later, when the results were finally made public, President Carlos Salinas de Gortari

I understand that a president needs to be practical and choose people who can help him effectively govern the country. But López Obrador’s most important campaign promise was to take on corruption, and there is nothing more corrupt than cheating in a presidential election. Why is he now offering one of his government’s most important positions to someone who represents a past we thought we had left behind? López Obrador is morally bound to exclude Bartlett from his team. Not doing so would make him an accomplice in the 1988 fraud. Para los padres, las reacciones de sus hijos mayores pueden ser frustrantes y no siempre saben cómo proceder. Los padres deben lograr que sus hijos aprendan a no tener celos patológicos ya que esto les creará serios problemas de relaciones interpersonales, en el trabajo y en la pareja. ¿Qué pueden hacer los padres para ayudar durante la transición? La mayoría de los niños se acostumbra a la idea de tener un hermano. Dependiendo de la edad y del nivel del desarrollo del niño, es recomendable hablarle de que en algún momento tendrá un hermanito. Este no es un buen momento para hacer cambios en la rutina del niño, como aprender a ir al baño solo o a dormir solo en el cuarto. De lo contrario, se arriesga a que con la llegada del hermanito haya un retroceso en este desarrollo. Tampoco es recomendable exigirle más de lo que puede dar porque viene en camino un bebé. A partir de los tres años se les debe explicar lo que ocurre. Tratar de integrar al niño al proceso; sugerir nombres para el hermano, ayudar en la decoración del cuarto, sentir el latido del bebé, acompañar a la mamá al médico. Claro está, el nivel en que el hijo mayor puede participar depende de su desarrollo y comprensión. Ya a los tres años de edad, el niño tiene una idea del concepto de familia. Háblale al niño de cuando era menor, mostrarle fotos y contarle lo que hacía. Un niño de tres o cuatro años entiende las cosas a través de ejemplos concretos. Además, esto le permite saber qué esperar. Así, al ver al recién nacido, no pedirá que lo pongas a caminar. Al llegar a la casa, es una buena idea que el recién nacido le traiga un regalito a su hermano mayor. Esto ayudará a que no sienta tantos celos. También puede pedirles a los familiares y amigos que no olviden traerle algo al niño mayor cuando vayan a ver al bebé. De esta forma, el niño no sentirá que toda la atención es para el hermanito y que se han olvidado de él. Ya en casa, los padres deben sacar tiempo para su hijo mayor. No alterar demasiado su rutina. Las mamás deben reservar un tiempo especial, todos los días dedicarle al niño 30 minutos de atención, aunque esto implique buscar a alguien que cuide al bebé. Aún así, es muy posible que el hermano sienta celos, apatía o que experimente un retroceso en su desarrollo y quiera que lo vistan de nuevo, le den la leche en biberón o le pongan pañales. in its final stage of becoming fully functional. The remodeling began with an infestation about five years ago. Because of the infestation, the Kansas City, Kansas, Catholic church – which is canonically joined with Sacred Heart as part of the Our Lady of Unity parish – had to rip out everything. John Hruska, who’s in charge of facilities maintenance and bookkeeping for the parish and who has followed the project since the beginning, said there were many roadblocks to overcome. Many of those roadblocks resulted from a lack of knowledge about the process. “We had to replace the countertop, remove a closet and even (remove) a cinderblock extension,” Hruska explained. Once the parishioners knew they had to do a complete remodeling, the project had to have city plans. That meant hiring an architect. “But that was a fiasco,” Hruska said. “It cost us a lot of money. The second architect actually came out with plans we could submit to the city.” In addition, three contractors bailed on the project. Moreover, the parish had trouble finding licensed electricians and plumbers, as required by the city; and had to redo the walls, changing them from rock and mortar to cement. Now, all the trouble has finally ended. The project was largely funded through donations from foundations and people from the community. Various parish groups have been involved as much as they could, the Rev. John Cordes said.

ienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de uno de los principales destinos turísticos de nuestro país vecino México y que además fue llamada la mejor ciudad del mundo por las prestigiosas revistas Travel + Leisure y Condé Nast Traveler, nos referimos a San Miguel de Allende, México. Ciudad que se encuentra en el estado de Guanajuato y que fue una de las ciudades más importantes en la proclamación de la Independencia del pueblo mexicano. Cuenta con una población menor a los 100 mil habitantes y fue fundada en el año 1542 por el monje franciscano Fray Juan de San Miguel quien la llamó San Miguel el Grande, luego de la Guerra de Independencia fue proclamada ciudad y cambió su nombre a San Miguel de Allende en honor al héroe de la nación Ignacio Allende quien dio su vida por la libertad de su pueblo y que además era oriundo de esta ciudad. En 2008 fue nombrada Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, la distinción se le otorgó debido a su aporte cultural y arquitectónico al barroco mexicano y a la importancia en la lucha de Independencia de México. Travel + Leisure la nombró la mejor ciudad del mundo debido a su amabilidad, gastronomía, calidad de servicio, movilidad, experiencia en compras y sobretodo por su aportación cultural, belleza arquitectónica y sus lugares de diversión. Al hablar de San Miguel de Allende sin duda es hablar de caminar, recorrer cada uno de sus rincones es una maravilla visual, además al ser una pequeña ciudad podrás hacerlo sin necesidad de un vehículo ya que todo se encuentra relativamente cercano, o bien puedes tomar algún tour como el tranvía llamado El pípila que te irá contando varias leyendas de la ciudad además de hacer paradas en los lugares más emblemáticos de la ciudad, el recorrido dura aproximadamente 1 hora y media y tiene un costo de $4. Si deseas probar algunos de los platillos típicos entonces no debes perderte de las enchiladas mineras que son tacos de pollo bañados en una salsa típica de la ciudad, Fiambre San Miguel de Allende que es una mezcla de carnes con vegetales bañados con una salsa de vinagreta. Como bebida un fresco jugo de betabel que es el zumo de una verdura dulce de color rojo intenso y como postre un pequeño plato de cajeta, un dulce de leche quemada que es muy famoso por todo México. Ahora que ya conocemos un poco del cómo llegar y de los principales gastos del viaje, aquí te describo algunos de los muchos sitios por conocer en tan hermosa ciudad: Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, es una lujosa iglesia de estilo gótico que tiene inspiración en las catedrales europeas medievales, fue construida en 1649 pero se derrumbó unos 50 años después por un gran deterioro, fue reconstruida nuevamente para 1710 con una apariencia al mero estilo barroco, así como la mayor parte del pueblo, pero para 1890 aproximadamente se hizo nuevamente cambios en ella para tomar la apariencia que tiene actualmente. La envuelve su bello jardín central, el cual cuenta con un hermoso kiosco rodeado de laureles de la India y al caer las noches junto a él podrás disfrutar de gran cantidad de parejas contagiadas por el danzón a las que te les puedes unir si así lo deseas. Podrás disfrutar de todo el centro histórico de la ciudad ya que se encontrará a todo tu alrededor, sus museos, sus otras iglesias católicas importantes y algunos de sus monumentos referentes a la Independencia de México. hile the divorce rate among younger couples has decreased over the past few decades, the divorce rate among older couples – or “gray” divorces – has doubled since 1990, according to a Pew Research Center study. According to the data, one out of every four people experiencing divorce is over 50. Nearly 1 in 10 is 65 or older. Multiple factors might explain this trend, such as the empty nest syndrome. Often, once a couple’s kids have left home, the two realize they’re not as in love as they were and see no reason to stay together. “I think for some of them, they’ve been busy raising their children, having their own careers – and then once they (have) retired and spent a lot more time together, they realize they don’t have much … in common,” said Susan L. Brown, professor and chair of sociology at Bowling Green State University, whose research has focused on divorces among older couples. Another possible factor is that the stigma surrounding divorce in terms of religion and society’s attitudes has been reduced greatly in recent years. Brown also attributes the change in the meaning of marriage as another reason behind the increase. Marriage is seen as more individualized, with an emphasis placed on marriage as a way of achieving happiness. “That, coupled with the fact that more women these days are working, … (compared to the) previous generation, gives them the ability to be financially independent,” she said. However, although women are more financially independent, gray divorce can still be harmful from a financial standpoint, said Brown. “Statistics show that (the) poverty level for women after a gray divorce is 25 percent, compared to 13 percent of men,” she said. Whether the gray divorce trend will continue is uncertain, Brown said. “It’s hard to say if this is just a baby boomer phenomenon or if this will continue,” she said. “We know that (among) younger people, the divorce rate’s actually declined because it’s a more select group of people who are getting married in the first place – and so, they tend to have more stable marriages…. So we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out.”

fter months of training, the Kansas City Chiefs will get a taste of competition again on Thursday (Aug. 9), when they face Houston in preseason action at Arrowhead Stadium. They’ll also get a taste of the rule changes the NFL has implemented for the 2018 season. As multiple news sources have reported, the pro football league has instituted some rules designed to reduce the risk of injuries. To reduce the risk of injuries during kickoffs, for example, players on kickoff units must wait until the kicker puts the ball in play to run downfield, rather than running up with the kicker as he boots it, as they’ve traditionally done. Other kickoffrelated changes include prohibiting kick return units from using the wedge formation to block for returners. Because of the rule changes, Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub has made significant changes in how he teaches special teams players, he said during an Aug. 4 press conference after a training camp session at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph. A point Toub has had to emphasize to the players on his kickoff unit is to wait until the ball is kicked before they run downfield,

he suggested. “Guys want to get that running start,” Toub stated. “It’s just instinctive that they want to go…. When it’s live, they’re going to really want to go.” Other safety-oriented rule changes include the prohibiting of players leading with their helmets when tackling. Bob Sutton, Chiefs defensive coordinator, said players aren’t opposing the change. “I think they’re taking coaching, they’re trying to do … (what they’re supposed to do),” Sutton said. Still other rule changes include an attempt to clarify the definition of a catch. According to the NFL’s website, three criteria must be met for a pass to be ruled a catch – one of them being that the receiver must “make a football move.” Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt, who plans on catching passes coming out of the backfield this season, likes the league’s attempt to clarify the definition. “I feel like it’s helpful,” Hunt said. Matt Besler and his Sporting Kansas City teammates might’ve been glad they weren’t graded for style in getting their 1-0 Aug. 4 win over the Houston Dynamo. “It wasn’t a pretty game,” Besler told Fox Sports Kansas City’s Carter Augustine after the MLS Western Conference victory at BBVA Compass Stadium. “We did what we needed to do (to win).” Native Chilean Diego Rubio helped the guys in blue get their not-so-pretty win by finishing Gianluca Busio’s flick pass in the 74th minute. Busio, a 16-yearold, was playing in his second MLS game and starting in league play for the first time. “I knew if I could get it to him, … (he would) finish it,” Busio said to Augustine. Sporting had an 11-on-10 advantage when Rubio scored the game-winner. In the 14th minute, Dynamo defender and native Venezuelan Alejandro Fuenmayor was ejected for knocking Busio to the ground when he came up behind Busio to challenge for a 50/50 ball in the air. By the time of the final whistle, Houston was down to eight men, as midfielder Darwin Ceren, a native Salvadorian; and forward Alberth Elis, a native Honduran, were ejected during stoppage time of the second half.

Houston players weren’t the only ones who were ejected. Dynamo coach Wilmer Cabrera was ejected, too. As was mentioned during Cabrera’s postgame press conference, the Sporting game wasn’t the first time this season that Houston players have been tossed. This MLS season, at least one Houston player has been ejected in four games – two of them against Kansas City. Cabrera, who received his red card during halftime, called on sports reporters and Dynamo fans to appeal to MLS for better officiating or help determine if Houston is playing soccer incorrectly. “When we say something, it’s going to be taken, like, ‘Ah, they’re trying to defend themselves or they (are) trying to excuse themselves because they lost,’ ” the native Colombian told the press. “And it’s not about that. That’s why I don’t want to mention anything (about the officiating).” With the win, Sporting snapped its six-game winless streak and claimed third place in the conference standings. Sporting has 36 standings points, as does Los Angeles FC, with Sporting holding the edge based on goal differential. Kansas City will face Los Angeles FC this Saturday night (Aug. 11) at Banc of California Stadium.
