Sample Collection Collection and storage of soils for VOC analysis using current US EPA methodology has changed since the promulgation of SW-846 Method 5035

En Core® Samplers

The collection options are: • En Core® Sampler Preservation Collect 3 En Cores® and a dry weight for each sample point. Ship to the lab within 48 hours of collection. • Methanol Preservation Requires coring and weighing 5 gram samples and placing in 40 ml vials preserved with methanol. VOC losses are prevented by both retarding volatilization and preventing biodegradation. However, this method involves use of a hazardous substance and weighing samples in the field. VOC detection limits are elevated 25 to 50 fold. Unused methanol and samples must be disposed of as hazardous waste. • Acid Preservation Requires coring and weighing 5 gram samples and placing in 40 ml vials preserved with an acid solution (formed from sodium bisulfate). While this method overcomes the methanol objections and eliminates subsampling in the lab, different limitations are presented: • Acid may be insufficient for preserving soils with high buffering capacity. • Alkaline soils may react vigorously with the acid and the vials may explode. • Acid may salt in or salt out contaminants, depending on organic carbon content. • A high level analysis may be needed in addition to the low level analysis.

Easily and economically samples soil gas vapors at shallow depths for preliminary testing.

Gas Vapor Dedicated Tips are now used around the world for monitoring remediation of hydrocarbon spills, tank and pipe leakage, landfills and at hazardous waste sites. Soil gas monitoring with the Gas Vapor Dedicated Tip is easily accomplished. The unique design of the Dedicated Stainless Steel Vapor Tip, with a Teflon umbrella & optional screen to prevent soil from clogging the vapor inlet holes, or for groundwater sampling, ensures a representative sample time after time. Teflon tubing is used to transfer the sample to the surface. Dredge Applications

A bottom sampling dredge consists of two halves of a relatively small box. The dredge is placed onto the bottom sediment, then closed and pulled up to retrieve a sample. A two-way mechanism prevents accidental closure while the dredge is dropping. The impact of the dredge on the bottom surface triggers the spring-loaded release mechanism without using a messenger. Soil Moisture Meter The Moisture Meter allows you to measure relative moisture deep within a large compost pile. The meter indicates the moisture content of your compost pile or soil sample by means of a sensor at the bottom of the probe. The probe is sensitive only at the tip. Calibrate the instrument by inserting the tip into an ideal sample of compost or soil and adjusting the needle to a "5" on the 0 to 10 scale. Then, the next time you insert your Moisture meter you’ll know relative to your ideal moisture content whether your soil is too dry or too wet. Note that this is not a % moisture content. The meter is sensitive to changing salt content and can be used to track leachate.

OxyDfuse™ Oxygen Diffusion Cells Enhance aerobic bioremediation with OxyDfuse™!

The all-new OXY-D-FUSE™ is a special formulation of calcium peroxide in a porous cell. It can be installed in either 2" (OXY-D-FUSE™ 2) or 4" (OXY-D-FUSE™ 4) wells or larger. The tubes are easily replaceable and are used to enhance aerobic bioremediation of groundwater or soil, and may act as infiltration barriers to prevent contaminant migration. This is achieved through extended release of oxygen required by aerobic microorganisms to break down hydrocarbons, including BTEX, MTBE, TPH, PAH and others. The calcium peroxide provides a slow and extended oxygen release profile, and a high active oxygen concentration of 17.3% or higher. Field studies have found that on site conditions, oxygen can be released for up to a year.
