SLUDGE & SEDIMENT
Dredge Applications
A bottom sampling dredge consists of two halves of a relatively small box. The dredge is placed onto the bottom sediment, then closed and pulled up to retrieve a sample. A two-way mechanism prevents accidental closure while the dredge is dropping. The impact of the dredge on the bottom surface triggers the spring-loaded release mechanism without using a messenger. After mechanism closure, the dredge is pulled up to retrieve the sample. Careful release of the sample distributes the sample approximately as it appeared on the bottom, making sediment profile description possible. The sample is not suitable for most geotechnical analysis and does not provide samples suitable for high-quality chemical analysis for volatile contaminants.
15 lbs & 25 lbs Bottom Dredges
Easily sample most types of bottom surfaces. Both constructed from stainless steel and powder-coated carbon steel for corrosion resistance. The top of the sampling chamber is screened to allow water flow during deployment and reduce the frontal shock wave that may displace sediment as the dredge contacts the sample surface. A two-way spring-loaded mechanism activates on contact with the bottom, no messenger is needed. Sampling area is 6" x 6" jaw opening.

The Pocket Penetrometer provides accurate measurements of the compressive soil strength. This 6 1/4'' unit is spring-operated, and it is measures strength in tons/sq. ft. or kg/sq. cm by pushing a 1/4'' diameter loading piston into soil to a depth of 1/4''. The end area is 0.05''. Compressive load is indicated by reading a scale on the piston barrel. A friction ring indicates maximum reading. Made of anodized aluminum. An Allen wrench and plastic carrying case with belt loop are included. A special 1'' diameter adapter foot is available as an option for use in very sensitive soils.

The Moisture Meter allows you to measure relative moisture deep within a large compost pile. The meter indicates the moisture content of your compost pile or soil sample by means of a sensor at the bottom of the probe. The probe is sensitive only at the tip. Calibrate the instrument by inserting the tip into an ideal sample of compost or soil and adjusting the needle to a "5" on the 0 to 10 scale. Then, the next time you insert your Moisture meter you’ll know relative to your ideal moisture content whether your soil is too dry or too wet. Note that this is not a % moisture content. The meter is sensitive to changing salt content and can be used to track leachate.
