Erb Seminar: On the Road In addition, you will take STRATEGY 525 / EAS 526 Erb Seminar: On the Road—a unique course offered only to Erb Institute students that combines research and practice with an immersive business sustainability experience. Global Opportunities for Impact Impact Projects The Erb Institute offers Impact Project funding to Erb students as an opportunity to drive business sustainability impact. You are invited to design high-impact projects to take your learning into your own hands during your time at the University of Michigan. Whether you want to attend a business sustainability conference, have an idea for a new business you’d like to launch or a sustainability initiative you’d like to co-create —we want to help you make an impact!
As an Erb student, you qualify for up to $10K per year in Impact Project funding!
Two Internships
“Impact Projects provide students with the opportunity to customize their Erb experience, apply academic frameworks to real-world problems and, ultimately, leave a lasting legacy.” Chris Owen, MBA/MS 2020 traveled to Ecuador for an Impact Project focused on women’s entrepreneurial empowerment.

As an Erb student, you’ll complete two internships, giving you the chance to try something new and explore various roles and industries. If you’re still defining the career path you’d like to take, you can test out two different experiences to find the role that’s right for you.
Multidisciplinary Action Projects (MAP) During the first year of your MBA program, you’ll participate in MAP— a seven-week course designed to provide real-world experience. You’ll work full-time with fellow classmates to tackle a real business challenge for a sponsor company. Projects span across sectors, industries, functions and countries—in 2023, 45% of MAP projects are outside the US and in 2020, 99% of MAP projects presented directly to a C-Suite Executive.
SEAS Master’s Capstone You’ll complete your master’s of science with a capstone experience of your choosing. Many SEAS master’s students opt to participate in a master’s project as their capstone experience. Interdisciplinary teams of students work with faculty mentors to help solve actual environmental challenges for real clients—from all sectors, at various scales and in locations around the world. Other students choose to complete a thesis (an individual scholarly work based on independent research). 7

You will be supported and championed by the Erb Institute staff—seven individuals dedicated to your success and experience—as well as Erb Institute faculty. We have four core faculty members, Dr. Charlene Zietsma, Dr. Tom Lyon, Dr. Andy Hoffman and Dr. Sara Soderstrom, all eager to help you deepen your knowledge and tailor your educational experience. Living in Ann Arbor, you’ll have access to some of the Midwest’s most beautiful parks, hiking trails, and lakes. If you’re a sports fan, take in a game at Michigan Stadium, the world’s largest college football stadium, or cheer on one of the many leading U-M teams. You’ll see why Ann Arbor is considered one of the best places to live—it’s also known for its creative community, culinary scene, and lively nightlife.
