THE GROWTH DOMAIN Designed by: Erica Grant, Kleigh Guzman

Because architecture has a relevant impact on one›s mental and physical wellbeing, our design concept derives from the relationship between the built environment and mental and physical health. By stimulating a building and its interior with the increase and decrease of variables such as color, lights, smells, sounds, and views to greenery, we will engage the brain in a positive response and create an environment conducive to improving mental health.

Therefore our building will be designed to promote physical and mental health within the central business district of Lubbock. We will promote mental health by providing community spaces on and between both towers and having designated floors and areas that concentrate on each person›s physical and mental needs. Our building was designed with the mindset of a person with autism and other mental disabilities and will cater to some of their needs but will be functional for everyday use to the average person.

(b) For parents and single mothers and fathers, that time is multiplied by two. (c) For persons with any form of disability this time is also multiplied by two. (d) However, in Clayton’s case, he resides within the realm of both a parent and a disabled person. This makes Claytons days longer due to the obstacles faced infront of him.

7:45 Subway - 9:30 Desired Stop Out of the 472 subway stations located within the state of New York, there are 118 accessible stations. On an average day 60% of them are out of order.

7:30 Out of home - 7:45 Subway After leaving his home, the uneven sidewalks make it more difficult to utilize.

This in itself adds an extra 5 minutes to get to an (accessible) subway station that is roughly 10 minutes away walking distance.

With having 60% of the elevators out of order on a given day, this increases the time it takes for someone who needs them to get downstairs to the trains. Some are fortunate enough to find help but others are often left to make their way down the stairs by themselves.

This can add up to an extra 10 to 15 minutes to their time.

9:30 Desired STOP - 10:00 WORK Unfortunately, the actions made before arriving to the desired subway station has to be repeated if the the stop was not an accessible stop or the elevators are out of service.

At the bus stop, she must lift the stroller over the step that allows her access into the bus. From there she then struggles to maneuver her child and the stroller within a crowded bus until she gets to her desired stop.

8:53 Desired STOP - 9:00 Doctor’s Unfortunately, the actions made before arriving to the desired subway station has to be repeated.

After leaving her home, she struggles to get the stroller over the steps located outside her front door. This adds an extra 2-3 minutes to the time allocated to get to the bus stop that is roughly a 5-minutes walk.

Along with the lack of audio in some sidewalk signals around the station. This in itself adds an extra 5 minutes to get to an (accessible) subway station that is roughly 10 minutes away walking distance.

At the subway station, there are a lack of braillles on signs that would help determine where he is located and where he has to go. Therefore, figuring out directions within the subway station is difficult.

Public Roof Top easting space: These are placed next to or in close walking distance from each bus stop in the block. It is also placed in blocks where office buildings such as banks or stores and parks are located to provide the community with public eating spaces.

Public roof top play ground for kids: located in close distance to bus stops, open ecology areas and areas in the community that is estimated to have high levels of mental and physical health.

Public open space: due to their close proximity to the rooftop play spaces designed for kids with mental and physical disabilities. Each bus stop is located in walking distance from all public eating rooftop areas. This was creat because the buroutes are something that can not be changes, but the locations of businesses, banks, access to healthcare, grocery stores, ect. can be changed based on the rountes of the bus and their stops.

Stage and seating for locals to show case their talents such as dancing and acting. Considering that subway stations are consumed with local talent, this gives person a consistent space to perform while providing a space for social impact.

This also provides a space for community engagement by using the spaces as an art show or community meeting space.

Ramps throughout the entire subway line to allow for free-flowing movement for all people.

Siting and eating area in the music hall/club where local artist can use this space to promote their music and talents to the community.

Intensify the use of glass instead of sheetrock inside builds to enhance visual communication

Add equipment to maximize energy efficiency and savings. This will decrease the amount of energy used, which will increase money saved which can therefore go towards repair needs.

Add the use of browser-based equipment within each elevator. This will allow for easy access when viewing full operational status and commands. This technology also maintains the elevator and repairs all technical problems remotely.

Increase the use of polyurethane-coated steel belts in elevators instead of the conventional steel ropes. This will help with the longevity of the elevator and its use without the need for lubricants.

In light of the covid era, we are in, place air purifying technology inside elevators.

Mount on rubber isolation pads. This will ensure the reduction of vibration and noise in the elevators. This will provide a comfortable environment for persons with hypo/hypersensitivity to sound.

Place LED lights or colors on the elevator buttons. This will increase the comfortability use of the elevators for visually impaired persons.

Add the use of mobile compatibility within each elevator. This will allow for remote access via tablet to its system to check maintenance more frequently.

Place braille on the buttons. This will help with the organizational factor of visually impaired persons when using the elevator.

Add audio for each floor and buttons pressed.

This will help increase locational knowledge for the blind.
