Harsh Metrolinx advertising said what needs to be said

In my previous life as a news reporter, I like to think I experienced the A game of NIMBYism.

The ability for everyday citizens to turn into city planners, environmental scientists or historians overnight is always comical, if you’re not invested in the project they’re fighting.

At the root, their reasons are (almost) always self-serving, an effort to avoid noise, traffic or simply change in general.

One of my most memorable moments in NIMBY history was a few months after underground construction began on the Crosstown LRT in Toronto and construction complaints began to really ramp up.

One of the complainants was legitimately flabbergasted that construction of a 10 km long tunnel would require the removal of dirt

via trucks. The trucks created traffic which enraged area residents that had no issue airing their grievances on television.

For the Crosstown, it got to a point where any misstep made the news. A worker caught smoking a joint even generated countless headlines. An irresponsible move, but hardly newsworthy.

Now, as the Crosstown nears completion, Metrolinx is once again in the spotlight for a series of rather harsh ads directed at residents prone to complain about construction. In one video, one of two women doing yoga on their lawn explains: “This Metrolinx construction is killing me.” Her yoga partner replies “I know, right? All for more transit and fewer cars, helping you breathe cleaner air and live

a healthier life… It’s killing you.”

The video ends with the message: “See beyond the construction.”

Naturally, the ads, shown at Cineplex movie theatres, were met with outrage. Metrolinx has since apologized and pulled the videos. Despite the apology, I’m sure the ads outlined what countless public servants, politicians and construction companies would have loved to express when faced with non-stop scrutiny. Residents need to remember public infrastructure projects will serve them when complete. Once shovels are in the ground, opposition generally creates more costs, more time and more stress for everyone involved. And it needs to be mentioned that Metrolinx is no saint in the construction of

the LRT – the project is still ongoing three years after its due date, but it did face a pandemic, supply shortages and legal issues. The message of seeing “beyond the construction” is brilliant and needs to be said, repeatedly. However, there’s probably better ways to tell people it’s worth the wait for the train to start running.

Deere expands its G-tier lineup with the 444 wheel loader

As

the extra features found in a P-Tier or X-Tier machine.

The 444 wheel loader is similar to the previously introduced 544 and 644 G-Tier machines, but at a lower operating weight and smaller size. This latest addition to the wheel loader lineup aims to cater to the segment of the construction market that values simplicity and reliability and serves as a response to the demand for more economically priced wheel loader options.

The 10,026-kg loader is powered by a 124 hp John Deere PowerTech E engine. As a mid-sized wheel

loader, the machine features a 1.9 cubic-metre bucket capacity, a 3.58 full-raised height to hinge pin and an 8,000 kg breakout force.

“Our customers are always seeking the perfect solutions to meet their needs, and the introduction of the 444 G-Tier was a direct response to the demand for reliable and more economical options within our lineup of wheel loaders, said Drew Miller, Global Product Manager for Wheel Loaders at John Deere. “This model not only comes in at an attractive price point, but it was also designed to perform and deliver the same durability and power customers expect from a John Deere machine.”

The 444 G-Tier offers similar productivity as other models in its size

class. The loader can be equipped with optional high-lift, expanding the reach of the machine. The optional debris package, which comes equipped with a centrifugal air precleaner and an auto reversing fan, helps reduce downtime by enabling the operator to stay up and running on the job without pausing to remove job site debris.

The wheel loader also boasts protective transmission and bottom guards, which are specifically designed to fend off debris and ensure the machine’s longevity.

The stacked cooling package includes a hinged door for cleanout and can be set to automatically reverse at regular intervals, making for simplified maintenance.

As well, operators will benefit

from ground-level access on the machine’s left side, making refills of fuel and DEF straightforward and simple. This loader also boasts clear visibility for both transmission and hydraulic sight gauges, enhancing access to important components when needed.

Further enhancing the machine's user-friendly design, there is a dedicated right-side access to the wheel loader’s engine, after-treatment systems and the cooling system.

The cab features an ergonomic design, including adjustable controls, added floor storage space and a joystick with integrated forward, neutral and reverse controls, helping to ensure maximum comfort and ease during operation. For

those seeking added comfort, optional air-ride suspension seat and ride control features help elevate the operator experience on the job.

The 444 G-Tier can be equipped with a range of attachment options, from snow blades to grapples, ensuring adaptability across different tasks and applications. Lastly, the in-cab adjustable boom settings help streamline operations, especially when performing repetitive tasks.

Also helping to keep the job running smoothly, the 444 G-Tier features JDLink as standard, which enables access to Service Advisor Remote and Expert Alerts, as well as support from technicians and access to replacement parts when needed.

Cat upgrades tech on its medium dozers

Caterpillar is introducing two new technology package upgrades for its lineup of medium dozers.

Starting in 2024, Cat Assist with ARO (attachment ready option) suite of features will be included as standard on Cat D4, D5, D6, D6 XE and D7 models.

As well, a new Cat Grade with 3D Ready option provides more flexibility for customers upgrading to Cat Grade with 3D on the D4, D5 and D6 dozer models.

Now standard, Cat Assist with ARO (formerly ARO with Assist) ensures that every new Cat D4 to D7 dozer comes equipped with the suite of Assist features that can be easily upgraded to Cat Grade 3D. These features include Stable Blade, which is designed to make finish dozing easier, and Traction Control to reduce track slip and minimize wear.

The tech suite also includes Auto Carry to maximize blade loads; Blade Load Monitor a feature for oper-

ator coaching to improve productivity; Slope Assist to hold blade angles without the use of GPS; Steer Assist to automatically keeps dozing straight; and ARO Sensors (IMUs) on the machine for GPS capability. Cat Grade with 3D uses a GPS signal to automatically adjust blade lift and tilt movements, so operators can get to design faster, save time and reduce the cost of rework, labour and materials.

The new Cat Grade with 3D Ready option consists of all the hardware required for the 3D system and comes installed and tested from the factory. The option includes

Metso’s crushing and screening equipment is expanding with a new software application.

The new Metso Remote IC is used to remotely control and monitor the crushing and screening process. The app also connects wirelessly all the Lokotrack crushers and screens at the site.

“We are constantly developing our products and digital tools to help our customers improve their productivity. Remote IC not only increases the productivity and safety of the plant, but it can also posi -

tively impact the employees’ experience and help attract a new skilled workforce,” said Renaud Lapointe, Senior Vice President at Metso’s Aggregates business area.

With the Metso Remote IC app, the operator can view all Lokotrack train machines and their main process parameters using a single dashboard.

The feeder and crusher settings can be adjusted safely from the excavator cab, and the overall visibility of the process allows the operator to adjust the feeding for an optimal production level.

If a problem arises, the Remote IC automatically stops the feeder to prevent overloading. It also instantly alerts and provides a reason for the stoppage, making it quicker and easier to get back to operation. With a lower overflow risk, the process can be run closer to maximum capacity.

“One of the key features of the Remote IC is that there is no need for the operator to exit the excavator cab to adjust the crushers or to stop the feeder in an

overflow situation,” said Toni Peltomäki, Director of Automation at Metso’s Aggregates business area.

“The ability to control and monitor the crushing and screening process from a single application has a significant impact on safety and eventually process productivity, since unnecessary process stops can be avoided.”

The Remote IC app can be operated by a single person and viewed by many. Everyone at the site can view the main process parameters and alarms. For example, the wheel loader driver can acknowledge the alarm and fix the problem.

The Metso Remote IC app can be used on an Android tablet or mobile phone. It is available for all new Lokotrack models and can also be installed as a retrofit to all models that have the latest Metso Metrics installed.

Metso Metrics is a cloudbased service for real-time performance information, maintenance planning and fleet management that works as a remote monitoring tool off-site.

HD Hyundai is collaborating with Google Cloud to advance its digital transformation using generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Philip Moyer, Vice President of Google Cloud, and Aerin Jungmin Lee, Team Leader HD Hyundai AI Center, outlined how the two companies are mutually working on generative AI.

“At Google, we believe that

AI is the biggest technology shift in our lifetime. Almost since our inception, Google has been focused on three types of artificial intelligence: personal AI, societal AI and business AI,” Moyer said. “We are so proud to be a partner with HD Hyundai because it's an opportunity to improve safety, sustainability and predictability of construction sites.”

The partnership will introduce generative AI across Hyundai’s core businesses,

including shipbuilding and construction machinery in Korea. Google Cloud will provide enterprise solutions like its Vertex AI platform to develop industry-specific AI applications.

For construction, Vertex AI will integrate with HD Hyundai’s X-Wise Xite, the company’s intelligent site management solution that connects different machines.

“Google's Vertex AI platform allows generative AI models to be securely and privately trained,” Moyer said. “Together, we're breaking new ground by training Google's models to understand all the data that's in X-Wise Xite, specific to the construction industry.”

Starting in January 2024,

HD Hyundai will prioritize high-impact tasks, including building AI solutions tailored to each industry’s needs, creating AI-based platforms to enhance customer digital experiences and train AI experts.

“This is a great learning process for us, experimenting with all the different possibilities for what we can do, what insight and information we can draw from all the data we have,” Lee said.

HD Hyundai has already piloted a generative AI service for after-sales calls at its construction equipment division. The collaboration with Google Cloud commenced in July 2023. It plans to establish a long-term AI roadmap to lead digital and business innovation.

Consortium aims to develop fuel cell for foundation equipment

into a special foundation machine from Bauer. The fuel cell system, along with other required components such as H2 storage and cooling unit, are designed as a plugin module for universal use.

along with the Professorship for Fluid Systems Technology and the Chair for Fluid Mechanics at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Over the next three years, the partners will work together to develop a concept for operating specialist foundation construction equipment with zero carbon dioxide emissions.

“The project represents another logical step towards the goal of sustainability,” Bauer said in a news release.

“Following Bauer’s previous contributions to sustainable construction with the cable-bound eBG 33 and battery-powered eBG 33 H all electric, the use of hydrogen technology in the form of a fuel cell is a logical enhancement. A hydrogen-powered machine can be used anywhere a cable connection is impossible or specific services are required that cannot be provided to the necessary extent using only batteries.”

The plan is to integrate a drive system comprising a hydrogen fuel cell, along with all necessary components,

Within the project, operating strategies for fuel cells and backup batteries are evaluated with regard to the technical requirements. Another focus of research is noise emissions, which negatively impacts both equipment operators and the environment during the operation of the machinery. With the aid of aeroacoustics simulations and resulting measures to reduce noise, the aim is to significantly reduce emissions compared to conventional, diesel-powered equipment. At the end of the project, the plug-in module will be installed on a Bauer machine and tested in practical applications.

MABAS

The research project, titled “Modular drive system with fuel cells for applications in specialist foundation engineering” (MABAS), has received funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic and Climate Action as part of the 7th Energy Research Program, a grant of about 2.5 million euros.

Gaudi robots can print a home in as little as 30 days

New 3D printing robots from California-based Gaudi are promising to build homes in record time and for a fraction of the cost of traditional methods.

According to Gaudi, the 3D printing robots can reduce material costs by 60 per cent, labour costs by 80 per cent and time on site by 70 per cent.

At World of Concrete, Gaudi Vice President Douglas Seemann outlined the capabilities of the machines.

“To build a home in 30 days is not unheard of — a complete home finished and out the door with people ready to move in,” Seemann said. “And tiny or small homes, printing them in a day is not unheard of. We do that all the time.”

The 6-tonne Gaudi 1 robot is able to print homes up to two storeys tall, while the 11-tonne Gaudi 2 can tackle homes up to four storeys.

Both 3D printers are fixed to a gooseneck trailer and do not require unloading before operation.

“The Gaudi 1 can be pulled with a heavy-duty pickup truck. You don't need to have specialized trucks or equipment.” Seemann said.

Once on site, the 3D printing robot can be erected in less than one hour.

“So, you pull your robot up to the job site, and an hour later you're ready to print,” Seemann said.

“And it prints from the trailer. You don't have to take the robot off the trailer.”

Operating the Gaudi 1 requires a team of three people: a printer operator, concrete mix manager and someone

to monitor the print. Training for the operators can be completed in about one week.

“We have the most advanced robotic printers in the world, but they're also the easiest to use,” Seemann said.

As well, the robots are able to print openings for doors and windows, eliminating the need for saw cuts.

“The robots are so precise that we're within millimetres,” Seemann said.

Gaudi ink

For the printer ink, or concrete mix, Gaudi has developed a formula that uses recycled materials and industrial tailings.

The Gaudi concrete mix is about three times the strength of traditional concrete used in residential construction, according to the company.

“A concrete driveway is 2,000 psi at 28 days. Ours is

7,000 psi. It's bulletproof,” Seemann said.

The robots are also open source, allowing its user to create their own concrete formulas, using a variety of materials.

“Our ink is unique in that we can print from construction debris or from hemp. We can print from conventional materials,” Seemann said.

As 3D printed structures are a new form of construction, permitting can be difficult for the regulating agencies, as the method is completely foreign. However, Gaudi is seeking permits in locations known for strict regulations and sharing its design files with its users.

Seemann explained about 100 to 150 homes have been printed in the United States to date.

“Every time a 3D home is printed, it's easier to get a permit,” he said.

Hamm’s Vibration Crusher (VC) compactors are able to reduce the work and expense needed for material preparation and transport.

The Stage 5 HC 250i C VC and Tier 3 HC 250 C VC compactors can crush and compact mixed soils, stones and other construction materials with comparable pressure resistance in a single step.

For customers, this means time, cost and carbon dioxide emissions are cut by up to 50 per cent depending on the application.

Featuring powerful Deutz engines and reinforced components around the front frame, three-point articulation and the underbody, the new compactors are well-equipped for tough applications.

The separate “C” in the type designation also symbolizes a reinforced drum drive, capable of inclines of up to 60 per cent. The 25 tonne machines are supplied with heavy-duty tires for rocky terrain, driver's cab and the Easy Drive operating concept all as standard.

When it comes to comfort, operators will appreciate the seat with extended backrest, especially during tougher applications. An air-sprung driver's seat is also available as an option.

New tool holder system

A highlight of the new VC compactors is the tool holder system. This is compatible with round-shank cutting tools for stone, as well as wear-resistant heavy-duty cutting tools with carbide tips for abrasive stone or hard stone. The configuration of

the tool holder system, and the way the tool inserts attach, have been designed to ensure assembly and removal are quick and easy with no need for specialist tools. This keeps maintenance and servicing costs low.

Existing machines (H 25i VC/3625 VC) can also be fitted with the new-design tool holder system by switching the drum. Transport rings are available for easy transport.

Wide application spectrum

The new VC compactors are suitable for the widest-ranging applications. In addition to the customary crushing and compacting of rock and earth to create a stable substrate, the machines are also utilized to level rubble in landfill sites.

The VC compactor can also be called upon for road planing work in tunnel building and surface mining sectors or to pre-crush and loosen stone. This takes a lot of hard work out of subsequent processes, such as layer-by-layer milling.

Liebherr equips the 36 XXT truck-mounted concrete pump with its latest tech

Liebherr has combined several of its technological developments to create the 36 XXT truck-mounted concrete pump.

After extensive testing, sales of the newly developed truck-mounted concrete pump 36 XXT from Liebherr have started.

The compact concrete pump, equipped with a 36-metre boom, combines the advantages of the new five-fold placing boom with the Powerbloc drive unit and the semi-closed oil circuit. The whole machine has also been given a new and attractive look.

During development, many pump operators requests were

taken into account, such as ergonomic access steps, simplified accessibility and an expansion of the stowage and storage options.

As well, the machine includes an extremely compact superstructure without a boom overhang at the rear to ensure high manoeuvrability in confined areas. The machine is weight-optimized and, depending on the equipment, has a total weight of about 26 tonnes on three axles.

The XXT support ensures better stability. It comes into its own thanks to narrow supports, so confined spaces pose no problem.

The modern radio remote control allows sensitive boom movements,

while the clear colour display shows the operator all the important parameters.

The five-section boom allows for a great deal of flexibility and evenwork when paving concrete. The boom has special slip properties that are especially beneficial when pouring concrete in buildings. The five-arm boom make it easy to reach a wide variety of positions on the construction site. The design and kinematics of the boom ensure low-vibration and even working during concrete placement.

The shape of the feeding hopper favours an even flow of concrete and good suction behaviour. The

machine is also equipped with two separately driven agitators to push the concrete directly into the suction area, which works perfectly even with concrete types that are difficult to pump.

Powerbloc drive

The new 36 XXT is equipped with Liebherr’s newly developed Powerbloc pump drive unit. It is characterized by the fact that all hydraulic switching and measuring elements are fully integrated. This eliminates the need for numerous hydraulic hoses and other components that were previously required. The feature makes the drive unit a

speciality in the world of concrete pumps.

Hydraulic half close circuit

The new drive unit is combined with the highly efficient hydraulic half-closed circuit, which supplies all drives powerfully and reliably with hydraulic power. As a result, the oil volume could be significantly reduced. Liebherr's new proprietary system combines the advantages of the proven open and closed circuits on the current market without their respective disadvantages. Customers confirm the quiet and powerful operation of the pump unit.

CCA condemns environment minister’s lack of support for road infrastructure

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) is demanding clarity from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on future investments in new road infrastructure after comments made earlier this week by environment minister Steven Guilbeault.

This week, Guilbeault explained while federal support to provinces for road maintenance will continue, existing road infrastructure “is perfectly adequate to respond to the needs we have.”

In a news release, the CCA outlined the Canadian construction sector is dealing with an acute housing crisis.

The federal government is asking the construction industry to build 5.8 mil -

lion new homes, but is overlooking the investment needed to support these homes and communities.

“These new communities need new roads. People need to be connected to their jobs, their schools, and their hospitals,” said Mary Van Buren, President of the Canadian Construction Association. “A growing population has growing demands. We not only need the road networks to support their movement; we also need to shore up our trade infrastructure, which includes roads, bridges and highways.”

A report by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) estimates that it will require $107,000 in public investments per new hous-

ing unit. This amounts to a total of $620 billion in public funding needed – an additional $375 billion beyond the current planned budget.

According to the CCA, Canada has been under-investing in its trade-enabling infrastructure for 15 years, as evidenced by the drop from 10th to 32nd in terms the World Economic Forum’s global trade infrastructure ranking.

Without continued investment in critical infrastructure, as recommended by the National Supply Chain Task Force, including trade-enabling infrastructure, Canada will fail to harness trade with its international partners for its economic success.

Five key considerations for OEMs when selecting a fastener parts distributor

The Supply Chain, a term once associated with the logistics, transportation and distribution world, has become as common a term as any other in everyone’s vocabulary.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 and recent geopolitical events, a lot of strain remains on the collective supply chain.

Never has this been truer than with fasteners in the off-road equipment manufacturing sector. From diesel and electric engines to hydraulic systems to electrical components, supply chain disruptions have made it difficult to provide the equipment that customers want. While fasteners may seem to be a small part of the overall manufactured product, they are an important component in off-highway machines.

So, how can off-road equipment manufacturers directly mitigate fastener supply chain challenges?

The answer lies in the value of one’s fastener supplier and

What is the availability of parts and how does the supplier manage inventory? What is the proximity of distribution centres? What is a supplier’s record of on-time delivery in respect to these regional sourcing capabilities?

A measurable plus is if a fastener supplier offers in-house manufacturing capabilities. Onshore manufacturing is growing in popularity as a strategy for OEMs, regardless of the region, to gain more control of the supply chain and shorten the delivery cycle.

Optimizing inventory

Inventory is undoubtedly an area that one would want to discuss with a potential fastener distributor in this on-demand era. When most talk about inventory, they often think about actual products and goods sitting in a physical plant somewhere. There’s some truth to this view, however, there is so much more to it in today’s world. Optimizing inventory isn’t about “more,” but how much of one SKU is available, where it is, how fast can it be delivered and what do we do next to get it supplied. What is critical is understanding a distributor’s capabilities in tech-enabled demand planning and replenishment automation. Are these capabilities powered by real-time data? Do they offer key insights to make inventory an operational asset? The ability of a distributor to apply predictive and prescriptive data analytics easily and accurately to inventory management can be a difference-maker for equipment manufacturers.

Develon enters the attachment business with its HB-Series hydraulic breakers

Develon is expanding its attachment lineup with its first breakers branded under the new company name.

The HB-Series hydraulic breakers include the HB06H and HB15FH and are now available in North America.

The breakers are engineered for high-performance, durability and easy maintenance in demolition, mining and quarry, and general construction applications.

The HB06H and HB15FH hydraulic breakers are compatible with the DX62R-7 and DX63-7 mini excavators, the DX140LC-7 and DX140LCR-7 crawler excavators and the DX140W-7 wheel excavator.

“The HB-series breakers offer a new concept with high performance and a simplified design,” said Jacob Sherman, Product and Dealer Marketing Manager for Develon.

Enhance operations

Another area to evaluate a fastener supplier in is their ability to develop solutions that improve an application, cut manufacturing costs, add industrial engineering to reduce the number of SKUs in a machine or performing other cost-out activities. In short, a full-service fastener supplier can help equipment makers re-think fastener applications in their products to offer better production and performance as well as reduce costs.

In-house tool and die capabilities with immediate access to engineers and machine operators are always a plus. And the ability to do custom work to meet an equipment manufacturer’s demands is essential.

The key here is to evaluate a fastener supplier on their ability to be flexible and offer a wide range of services to meet an equipment manufacturer’s every need so they can eliminate complexity, save time, reduce waste, drive down costs as well as improve efficiency and reproducibility.

Improve quality

Well documented quality levels should be a must for suppliers.

Equipment manufacturers should have no qualms about asking for verifications and certification by standards bodies such as ISO 9000 and IATF. These certifications are validation that a supplying organization has top-notch quality processes in place that have been certified by the leading quality certification organizations.

“They are specifically optimized and fully certified for select Develon 6-metric-ton mini excavators and 14-metric-ton crawler and wheel excavators. The HB-series breakers provide the highest possible productivity, whether the excavator operator is breaking concrete or rock.”

The Develon breakers boast high-quality materials and components, ensuring a long lifespan.

As well, the HB Series hydraulic breakers' durability is enhanced through an advanced heat treatment process and the use of quality materials for key components, such as the cylinder and piston.A urethane damper prevents vibrations that can damage the breaker and improves operator comfort. The front head supports the breaker and assemblies with a bushing, which absorbs the impact of the tool. The

While certification of quality processes throughout the organization is essential, it might be doubly important in quality lab testing as equipment manufacturers don’t want a fastener to reduce product performance. Testing parts and mitigating safety hazards by measuring them against standards are important, and one’s supplier needs to adhere to such certifications as ISO 9000, among others. It goes without saying that quality best practices by a full-service distributor and their manufacturing suppliers are essential when identifying a fastener partner that you can trust.

Electrification

As manufacturing moves toward more sustainable products, the need for fastener distributors to help equipment manufacturers embrace and figure out how to advance electrification and environmental considerations in their products is paramount. That’s why equipment manufacturers must understand the strategies of fastener makers and distributors in these areas, their technological advances, and any use cases that will provide validation for production and performance enhancements going forward.

The overall focus on sustainability best practices in manufacturing are only going to get greater.

That is why when evaluating a fastener supplier, an equipment manufacturer must understand a supplier’s strategic approach in both areas.

As there are many exciting opportunities for off-road equipment manufactur -

ers in the coming years, particularly with a greater focus on environmentally friendly equipment and greater investments in infrastructure, it makes sense for them to start looking at how fastener partners and their technology fit into the overall ecosystem of equipment manufacturing.

When it comes to working with a full-service fastener distributor, the equipment manufacturer can gain the most from the relationship by approaching it through a holistic 360-degree lens that delivers success for the manufacturer.

The key word is partnership.

Logging family sticks together to face tough conditions

Reid Lind’s alarm clock goes off hours before sunrise. In the darkness, he laces up his boots, preparing to walk in the footsteps of two great loggers – his grandfather Bob Lind and his dad Mac Lind.

“My dad was quite a character,” Reid said. “Everybody knew who he was. He was just a little fella, but he was full of energy.”

Mac Lind had hoped his son would take over the family business, G.R. (Mac) Lind Logging Ltd., in Princeton, British Columbia, one day. Reid, who started logging as a teenager, remembers learning how to run a skidder. For an outdoorsy kid like him, this was the “biggest Tonka toy” he could ask for.

“I just got the free-for-all training back in the day,” Reid said. “Someone hands you the keys and lets you learn through experience.”

By 2015, Reid was working behind the scenes, learning the business side of things. When his father passed away, Reid stepped up to run the company and take care of its family of employees.

“This business has always been a family thing,” Reid said. “From my grandpa to my father to myself. My cousin, my sister and my wife work in the office. We are proud of what we do, how we’ve grown and how we’re still branching out.”

Roots run deep at Lind Logging, a company started by Reid’s grandfather in the late 1960s. Reid grew up with one of his longtime employees, Clint Gibson, a childhood friend and neighbour. Clint’s dad also worked for Lind. Clint said Mac would be proud of how Reid has maintained the company’s values.

“They’re successful because they care about their employees,” Clint said. “If the mill wanted to shut you down, the Linds would find something for you to do, so you don’t go without a pay cheque. That’s how Reid still runs the company today.”

Both Reid and Clint were raised in logging families who knew the realities of the industry. Clint’s father made him finish his education before he could join the logging crew. Reid tried college for one year, but cut his experience short to join the family business.

Stronger, faster, better

Today, Lind Logging primarily cuts wood for the Weyerhauser mill in Princeton. One recent job was salvaging the site of the Garrison Lake forest fire that claimed nearly 15,000 hectares in 2021.

To tackle the rugged conditions, the Lind team runs nine Waratah processors, including an HTH622C 4X4, three HTH616C heads and

several HTH622B models, including the newest HTH622B Series-III. The company bought its first Waratah in 2005 and continues to rely on the heads to work, day in and day out.

“In our industry, Waratah is the standard,” Reid said. “The heads have only gotten stronger, faster, with more flow and better measuring. It allows us to get evenly sized pieces, and at the end of the day, we have a nice pile of wood there.”

Clint has experienced the benefits of Waratah’s equipment as well.

“It seems like most home computers don’t have as much computing power as the Waratah 622B Series-III,” Clint said. “It’s crazy what you can do with a computer now in a machine.”

Support is another crucial

element to their equipment. From delivery and set-up to maintenance and service, Reid said the Waratah support team is responsive and consistent.

“If we have an issue with one head, they’ll come out and tune the entire fleet, just because,” Reid said. “They

do a good job with parts. They’re also knowledgeable and a bunch of good guys, too.”

The Lind crew is built to work in tough logging conditions. But even a fire salvage job reminds them how grateful they are to work outdoors.

“I think we take for granted how lucky we are to work out here every day,” Reid said.

“When you bring somebody up who doesn’t see it every day, they’re in awe. That’s one of my favourite parts, getting to be outside all the time.”

Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas has added six new models to its ZAXIS-7 line of medium and large excavators.

The ZX250LC-7, ZX300LC-7, ZX350LC-7, ZX490LC-7, ZX690LC-7 and ZX890LC-7 ranging in operating weight from 26,500 kg

to 87,500 kg. The excavators include upgraded features that enhance comfort, visibility, fuel efficiency, durability and productivity.

“The new ZX-7 generation of mid- to large-sized excavators features an array of new features and benefits to exceed the high standards set by

our customers,” said Patrick Baker, Product Manager for medium and large excavators at Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas.

“These excavators have been engineered to be straightforward, effective and productive for the operator while providing an extremely high level of comfort.”

Prioritized comfort

Comfort was a priority when redesigning the operator station. The ZAXIS-7 cab is larger with less vibration and noise for an improved operating experience and reduced operator fatigue.

The cab also features increased head clearance and leg room with a one-touch adjustable air suspension seat synchronized to move with the console for simplified adjustments. This console features an ergonomic layout with intuitive controls for

operator convenience and enhanced visibility on the right side of the cab.

Hitachi also reduced in-cab noise levels by increasing the thickness of the rear glass. A seal has been added between the cab and floor plate to improve the airtightness of the cab to keep dust out, even when the air conditioner is running. Four fluid-filled elastic cab mounts reduce vibration when travelling.

To improve panoramic visibility, Hitachi has equipped the excavators with its Angle peripheral vision camera system. It provides five different camera views from inside the cab on a 20-cm anti-glare LCD monitor, including a wide 270-degree bird’s-eye view of the machine’s immediate environment.

The operator can quickly and easily select a view on the monitor that best suits the situation. A rearview camera allows the operator to see the area right below the counterweight.

Hitachi hydraulics

Excavator models ranging from the ZX130-7 through ZX890LC-7 use a TRIAS III, TRIAS II or HIOS V hydraulic system solution, depending on which best matches the excavator’s size and application.

“These excavators showcase next-generation hydraulic systems paired with reliable Isuzu engines to provide increased productivity and reduced fuel consumption. The new ZX-7 excavators are reliable and built to perform in the toughest working conditions,” Baker said.

Operators can select their preferred ISO or SAE control pattern with a twoway pattern change valve that is standard on models from the ZX130-7 through the ZX490LC-7, and a dealer-installed option on the ZX690LC-7 and ZX890LC-7.

Standard auxiliary piping and relief valves on models ranging from the ZX1307 to ZX490LC-7 improve operation and help protect the machines while they’re running breaker/hammer attachments. This is a dealer-installed option on the ZX690LC-7 and ZX890LC-7.

“The ZX-7 excavators feature heavy-duty boom and stick configurations designed to handle tough working conditions. Newly strengthened undercarriage components, such as idlers, rollers and improved seals carry long-term reliability,” Baker said.

The excavators feature enhancements to critical components such as a strengthened X beam undercarriage. An anti-mud-compaction lower roller design helps prevent mud from entering and damaging the oil seals. The upper and lower rollers also feature improved idler sealing. A track undercover protects the joint from potential damage. As well, the ZAXIS-7 excavators feature strengthened boom ends and feet for longterm reliability. For durability, the bushings are installed in the brackets at the boom ends and the boom feet.

Simplified maintenance

Tracking maintenance is simplified with the multifunc-

tional monitor. It indicates preset maintenance intervals each time the key is turned on. Engine oil and coolant levels can be checked right from the operator’s seat. Design enhancements help protect critical components from the environment. An inner element of the engine air filter protects the engine from dust ingress while cleaning the outer element. Even the air conditioner is protected with a sealed internal filter that prevents intrusion of dust into the air conditioner unit.

ConSite

Using telematic tools to monitor machine health helps boost uptime. ConSite, which remotely monitors operational status and alerts owners and operators to upcoming maintenance needs, is making a leap forward.

A standard feature, ConSite OIL, monitors engine and hydraulic oil conditions to proactively catch issues before any fault codes are triggered in the machine. This helps drive uptime by catching oil degradation before damage to critical systems can occur. The in-cab monitor controls the Bluetooth radio and allows convenient communication. The operator can listen to music and make hands-free calls from the cab. Long-lasting LED lights provide visibility in challenging conditions. Low-effort pilot controls reduce operator strain. For convenience, switches have been collectively installed on the right side with easy access to those frequently used.

COMPACT EQUIPMENT

GET SET FOR A SUCCESSFUL SEASON

5 tips to maximize productivity with compact equipment

Compact equipment has gained popularity in recent years due to its multi-functionality, ease of maintenance and ability to get almost any job done. However, even seasoned operators should not take these versatile and powerful machines for granted.

When planning projects, it's important that business owners and equipment operators take the necessary steps to ensure they’re getting the most out of their compact equipment and setting themselves up for a successful and profitable season.

Identify your equipment needs

You’re likely starting to get a better idea of the work that awaits you this spring and summer as the ground begins to thaw and snow begins to melt. Whether your projects involve digging, grading, lifting or hauling,

make sure you have the machinery you need to get the job done right.

Compact equipment like mini excavators, skid steer loaders, compact track loaders and wheel loaders are ideal for contractors and operators who have a wide array of project types on tap. With various attachments available, compact equipment can help you quickly transition between jobs, minimizing the need for heavy machinery and specialized machines, while maximizing the time at hand.

Assess your attachments

One positive aspect of running compact equipment is it’s compatible with a wide array of hydraulic attachments for various jobsite tasks. Take a moment to ensure your augers, buckets and trenchers have the necessary attachments to handle the scale of projects you’re undertaking this year. Having everything you need in good working order will save you valuable time in the long run.

Check the hydraulic system,

inspect the undercarriage and thoroughly assess your machine. Make sure everything is in working order and has not experienced any damage over the course of winter storage.

Read the operator’s manual

If there was one step to skip, reading the operator’s manual is often it, especially among veteran operators who have run the same piece of equipment for years. However, it isn’t just new machine owners who should re-read the manual each year. Refreshing oneself on the capabilities of your equipment today will help save valuable time on the job site, especially if any in-field adjustments are required. When you’re in the middle of a project that requires maximum productivity to hit your deadlines, you’ll be glad to have such intimate knowledge of your machinery.

Hit the ground running

There’s a good chance some of your equipment has been in storage

all winter. Get it ready for the busy season ahead by making sure your machine is in good working condition. Essential inspections should include the tread and pressure of your tires; adding fluids according to the manufacturer’s recommended service intervals; changing the oil; inspecting the machine’s belts for wear; examining hoses, bushings, chains and sprockets; and properly greasing your machine.

When doing pre-season maintenance, it’s always smart to check equipment warranties. This ensures you’re maximizing your value and getting any potential issues fixed before beginning operations. While machinery in need of repair should be brought in for maintenance whether it’s under warranty or not, knowing your equipment’s warranty lifecycle will help you prioritize urgent repair and routine maintenance needs.

Practice proactive maintenance

Once your equipment is ready for

the season, take it for a test-run to avoid any nasty surprises when you arrive at your first job site. Continue proactive maintenance as you ramp up in the spring and operate through the summer and well into the fall. Ensure your equipment remains clean from excess material and debris, especially the various attachments you are running and the undercarriage area of excavators and loaders and tires and tracks.

Regular cleaning helps to extend the performance and lifespan of your machinery, in addition to promoting jobsite safety. It is also important to adhere to regular maintenance checkpoints while your equipment is in operation, by changing fluids and filters regularly, inspecting your machinery daily and properly storing it after each use.

No matter what projects lie ahead, understanding the capabilities of your compact equipment and treating it with the proper care and respect will help maximize productivity and ultimately, increase your bottom line.

Firstgreen Industries debuts cabless electric skid-steer

Firstgreen Industries has introduced the Elise CBL (Clean Building Logistics), a remote-control operated electric, cabless skid steer.

The Elise CBL weighs 3,250 to 5,050 kg and integrates several technologies, including AI-powered analytics, IoT connectivity and an advanced materials database, to optimize the lifecycle of building materials and operations. The skid steer features a max load capacity of 1,200 kg.

“The new model will take indoor and underground excavation to a new level. With a fully remote-controlled, full-sized skid steer at your command, your on-site safety record, workload and time have been completely re-imagined,” said Ken Pederson, Sales Manager at Evolution Mechanical, the Canadian dealer for Firstgreen industries.

The cables machine enhances safety, making the equipment suitable for high-risk environments. By eliminating the need for an operator inside, the risk of injury or exposure to hazardous materials is reduced.

The machine can be operated via a remote control or Apple/ Android mobile app.

According to Firstgreen Industries, remote control technology allows for more accurate and refined movements, improving precision in tasks like excavation or material handling.

Precision of the machines is also improved by four individual speeds the operator can select from for both hydraulic and travel functionalities. These can be further modified by the operator.

The absence of a cab also reduces the overall machine height and eliminates the necessity for FOPS/ROPS certification. This improves loading

capacity and ensures a more balanced weight distribution with a lower centre of gravity to enhance stability.

MOP

Firstgreen Industries’ Material Optimization Processor (MOP) feature is at the heart of the Elise CBL, utilizing a comprehensive database of sustainable materials to recommend the most eco-friendly and cost-effective options for construction projects. It aims to minimize the environmental impact by optimizing resource use.

The Waste Diversion System (WDS) enhances the platform's sustainability by managing construction waste. It identifies materials that can be reused or recycled, ensuring that waste is handled in the most environmentally responsible manner and reducing landfill contributions.

simultaneous operations.

As well, an auto-shift system enables automatic travel shift from high to low depending on traction effort and terrain, giving smoother simultaneous operations when dozing and turning.

“As always, Kubota tucks their hydraulic hoses and lines in and around the boom, keeping them protected from any snagging issues. So, we've got no issues here,” Holton said.

Reliability

Kubota's updated 8-ton compact excavator delivers strong performance and efficiency for its size, with a bucket breakout force of 14,660 foot-pounds, reduced soil spillage when rotating and a well-matched arm and bucket.

The engine rpm automatically idles when the control levers are in neutral for more than 4 seconds, and the engine turns off automatically when the engine has been idling for

too long. Users can also set the idling time to suit their preferences. In addition, the KX080-5 features a Kubota engine equipped with CRS and efficient DPF, reducing maintenance by increasing the service intervals for both the regeneration filter and ash cleaner.

Operator comfort

With a spacious and comfortable cab, expanded glass area and double adjustable air suspension seat, the KX080-5 brings a new level of operating comfort to the job. Both the seat and control console are adjustable to accommodate operators of all sizes.

Kubota has also made keyless start a standard feature for the KX080-5 compact excavator.

As well, the engine can be started by entering a fourdigit passcode using the excavator keypad and up to 10 user passwords can be set.

“We're enhancing the

operator’s comfort and experience out there on the job site because a productive operator is going to be a happy operator in the seat. That's what we're here for. We're here to make money. That's why the guy’s on the job,” Holton said.

The design also features a slimmer, more ergonomically positioned right LCD screen, a quieter environment and more foot space.

“It’s 72 decibels inside the cab, and that's going to make it a nice quiet ride for the operator,” Holton said.

The KX080-5 prioritizes safety inside and outside of the cab with a factory designed rear-view camera and LED work lights with turnoff delay.

Additionally, the electronically controlled third line hydraulic return can be automatically activated on the digital panel in the cab, eliminating the need for operators climbing down from the cab and reaching under the bonnet.

LOOKING BACK AT COMPACT EQUIPMENT

Pictured here in 2012 is a vintage Caterpillar D2 crawler headed for the International Plowing Match held at Roseville, Ontario, near Waterloo.

The Historical Construction Equipment Association of Canada (HCEA Canada) had several antique machines on display from this little Cat D2 to the big I-H TD 30 dozer with a 4.3-metre blade. The owner of the D2, Carl Roney, had stripped every part of the crawler and brought it back to perfection.

One pull on the pup-engine and the diesel fired up! He also had his Caterpillar D13000 engine from the 1940’s at the same event.

The first Caterpillar D2

J-Series was introduced in 1938 with diesel power of 32 hp. The machine was built until 1947 with 19,000 units manufactured. When the D2 U-Series was introduced, it had a D311 engine. The new series featured several improvements, including more power at 55 hp. A staggering number of units were built, with 26,500 manufactured in a decade when the last D2 rolled off the assembly line in 1957. Contractors and farmers alike put the Cat D2 to work. Options, such as PTO’s, winches and hydraulic bulldozer blades could be attached. The front-mounted hydraulic pump ran off the crankshaft while the PTO

was gear driven. Other applications such as orchards and forestry work fit the Caterpillar D2 well through nearly two decades before the Cat D4 crawler took over.

The Historical Construction Equipment Association 2024 events include Wheels & Tracks, held June 8-9, and the ‘Last Blast’ event on October 19. Both events are held at the Simcoe County Museum, near Barrie, Ontario. To see more than 60 pieces of vintage construction equipment in action be sure to attend.

Volvo CE boosts stability, fuel efficiency on new compact excavators

Volvo Construction Equipment is bringing two new compact excavators to North America, the 3.5-ton EC37 and the 4-ton ECR40.

Both excavators are designed with features that provide increased operator comfort, 10 per cent more fuel efficiency, better stability and easier maintenance. The two new machines replace the EC35D, ECR35D and ECR40D.

“The 3- to 4-ton size makes up more than a quarter of the compact excavator market in North America, and we’re excited to refresh our offering in that range,” said Darren Ashton, Product Manager for compact equipment at Volvo CE.

“I think our customers will be very happy with the improvements we’ve made based on their feedback.”

The compact excavators share the same platform and components, though the EC37 excavator has a conventional upper carriage design and the ECR40 excavator has a short swing radius to allow for work in more confined spaces. Both machines are powered by the 25 hp Volvo D1.7A engine.

To boost stability, the EC37 and ECR40 include a new elongated undercarriage that improves weight balance by providing longer contact between the tracks and the ground. The adjusted centre of gravity reduces the rocking chair effect other compact

excavators may create.

“We made this machine really stable to work on slopes, and to load it on and off trucks and things like that,” Ashton said.

The counterweight is standardized across the two models and the ECR50 and ECR58 excavators to simplify component needs for fleets with multiple models. Optional features include a float blade and LED work lights.

Effortless control

The new EC37 and ECR40 excavators feature a spacious, ergonomic and quiet cab that provides outstanding visibility thanks to slim corner pillars and wide, flat glass areas. For added comfort, the armrest and controls float with the seat, and the door opening and travel pedals are larger than in previous models.

The intuitive jog wheel and easy-to-navigate human machine interface (HMI) functionalities provide controllability and adaptability for any job requirements. As well, work modes now include an Eco mode and an auto engine shutdown in addition to the existing auto engine idle. With auto engine shutdown, hours no` t worked are not recorded, keeping the machine operating efficiently for longer while reducing maintenance costs. This also contributes to a 10 per cent boost in fuel efficiency.

Customizable hydraulics

For a wide range of attachments, the customizable hydraulic flow setting and work modes for a wide range of attachments improve ease of operation allowing the excavator to be tailored for any task.

“The load-sensing hydraulics are definitely a highlight,” Ashton said. “The way the controls are set up and the smooth movements are just outstanding, and it all works together for better fuel efficiency.”

If there are multiple operators working with the same machine, each person can set up the controls however they see fit with a few simple setting changes on the new 13-cm HMI.

Reduced maintenance

These new machines boast 50-hour greasing intervals and a fuel tank capacity of 70 litres. The patented multifunction hydraulic oil filter provides protection to the hydraulic system. The engine and rear hoods feature wide openings, and the engine doesn’t require a diesel particulate filter.

“Often, the guys that are running these machines are the guys that are working on these machines. So, when it's late at night, you want to be working on something that offers that accessibility,” Ashton said.

“Kioti’s entrance to the compact market arrives at a pivotal time for both our company and the industry. Compact sales exploded over the last decade, with no signs of slowing down,” said Justin Moe, Product Manager of the Construction Division at Kioti Tractor. “Our customers are part of this demand, seeking compact equipment for everything from acreage management to worksite applications. With the TL750 and SL750, we are meeting this demand, leveraging 35 years of experience and extensive customer feedback to deliver proven, durable machines that are built to power through tough jobs.”

Kioti diesel engine

Both models utilize a 74-hp Kioti diesel engine. Field-tested and proven across several applications, the engine delivers consistent power and reliability, providing added confidence when tackling tough jobs.

For a premium touch and feel, hydraulic pilot joystick controls offer the ultimate in manoeuvrability, delivering featherability and finite control. As a result, the machine feels like an extension of the operator, enabling precise work, even in tight spaces or during complex tasks. The fingertip controls allow the operator to easily utilize the attachment function from the joystick for a smooth and effortless operation.

Designed to lift, push and power through rigorous demands, the machines have up to a 3.3-metre height to hinge pin and vertical lift path.

Kioti cab

Both machines feature a wide cab, available with the standard open station design or an optional enclosed cab with HVAC. For comfort, the compact models include a high-back suspension seat and LCD digital display. The standard roll-up style door allows for easy entrance and exit, regardless of the position of the bucket or attachment. The overhead door design increases flexibility on the job as operators

can work with the door open or closed.

The design enhances machine visibility to the front, sides and rear. The standard rearview camera, integrated into the LCD digital display, offers an on-demand rear view when travelling in reverse or with the push of a button, enhancing job site awareness and safety. For visibility in low-light conditions, the compact loaders feature LED front and rear work lights as standard.

Self-levelling bucket

Activated with the switch of a button, the standard self-levelling feature automatically keeps the bucket or attachment in a horizontal plane when lifting. When enabled, the operator no longer needs to worry about manually adjusting the machine, reducing fatigue when handling materials. As well, optional ride control further reduces material spillage and lift arm movement when moving materials across the site for enhanced operator comfort.

The solid-mounted undercarriage on the TL750 improves grading performance, while the track design reduces the chance of de-tracking. Other features include protected hose routing and the open track system, further enhancing durability and minimizing downtime.

For improved machine maintenance, the swing-out rear radiator allows the operator to better reach common service items by removing two bolts. The easy-to-lift cab and quick access to fittings and valves further simplify serviceability.

Kioti delivered its first-ever TL750 compact track loader to country music Singer and Songwriter Trace Adkins. Adding to his lineup of Kioti equipment, Adkins received the keys to his new TL750 and spent the afternoon experiencing the machine’s performance and durability firsthand with the Kioti team at his Tennessee farm.

UTILITIES

UNEARTHING EFFICIENCY

Here’s how to master hydro excavation for complex projects

With today’s increasingly complex and congested underground environments, there is no room for error when excavating or exposing utilities.

Underground professionals know that damaging existing utilities – whether it be fibre, gas, electric, water or sewer lines – can result in dangerous and often costly consequences.

Enter the vacuum excavator, specifically, the hydro excavator – the underground professional's secret weapon. When operated using best practices, vacuum excavators can help contractors effectively, efficiently and safely uncover utilities and navigate complex underground environments in a variety of ground conditions. From ground and soil considerations to ensuring the proper water pressure, following key best practices can help underground construction professionals improve efficiency, increase productivity and maximize jobsite safety.

Navigating utilities

In an industry that continues to evolve with new technology and new risks, it takes a village to keep crews and infrastructure safe. From utility locating technicians to

underground construction professionals, everyone plays an important role in damage mitigation.

Not to mention, today’s jobsites are rarely simple, especially when considering the complicated web of utilities and infrastructure that weave underground. In addition to managing a variety of ground and soil conditions, hydro excavators have the power to support work in complex underground environments. Unlike a traditional excavator or trencher that can cause immense disruption, hydro excavators are much gentler at removing soil and debris when working underground. When exposing utilities, contractors should always keep their nozzle about 20 cm away from the utility to prevent damage to both the equipment and utility. Water pressure should be kept below 2,800 psi with the nozzle consistently moving when actively excavating.

When operated according to best practices, hydro excavators can be used to expose utilities while mitigating potential damage. On today’s underground construction jobsite, a strike or cross-bore can be extremely costly and potentially dangerous, so a hydro excavator is a key jobsite addition.

Ground conditions

Today, most equipment

manufacturers design vacuum excavators with both air- and hydro-excavation capabilities, so operators don’t have to choose between the two. For example, contractors can start excavating the ground surface with air and switch to hydro once they reach harder soil formations. With the ability to switch from hydro to air, operators can better adapt to changing jobsite conditions and stay productive in a variety of ground conditions.

When choosing between hydro or air excavation, contractors should consider the jobsite and soil conditions to ensure the method used is the most efficient. For example, pressurized water typically exposes utilities faster than air, however, air is often the better choice for more delicate jobsites that are at risk of washout near roadbeds.

Hydro excavation uses pressurized water to do the hard work. It is the most widely practiced form of soft excavation because it can be used in a range of soil conditions, including tightly compacted and hard soil, cobble and clay. As hydro excavation requires operators to dispose of liquid spoils and replenish water sources while on the jobsite, following best practices for water conservation is important. However, the ability to conquer vari-

ous soil conditions quickly and efficiently makes hydro excavation the preferred method for many contractors.

Air excavation allows operators to break up soil with compressed air and vacuum dry spoils, which can be reused onsite as backfill. This method works best on softer soils such as topsoil, sand and some clay formations. Unlike hydro excavation, which requires access to water, air excavation keeps machines running and operators on the jobsite without having to make trips to acquire water or dispose of liquid spoils. Additionally, many operators are turning to air excavation on jobsites as liquid spoils disposal restrictions tighten and certified disposal sites become more difficult to find.

For both hydro and air excavation situations, the recommended pressure for soft excavation is no greater than 2,800 psi.

Although many vacuum excavators and nozzles offer higher psi capabilities, too much pressure can damage utilities and other underground infrastructure. The pressure should be reduced even further if using heated water.

Lead with safety

Proper exposure and excavation on a jobsite are the most common and efficient ways for contractors to avoid

damage to underground infrastructure and utilities.

By following hydro excavation best practices, operators can streamline efficiency and ensure jobsite safety.

From understanding the differences in ground conditions on the jobsite to using the correct psi, operators can ensure they are set up for success.

Daimler and Hexagon partner for electric Freightliner eM2

Daimler Truck North America has entered into a long-term agreement with Hexagon Purus to provide complete vehicle integration of the battery electric Freightliner eM2, which was developed to serve vocational applications.

The partnership will incorporate Hexagon Purus' proprietary zero-emission technology, including battery systems, auxiliary modules, power modules

and vehicle-level software. It will also include power-takeoff (PTO) options to supply power to the vocational body and the equipment.

DTNA unveiled the vocational Freightliner eM2 prototype truck with vocational upfit options earlier this year. The introduction is part of an innovation project with truck equipment manufacturers, Alamo and Altec, to expand zero-emission products for vocational cus-

tomers in the utility, sweeper, dump, construction, towing and refuse segments.

“We are excited about our collaboration with Hexagon Purus and the potential it holds for the future of electric vocational trucks,” said Aaron Scates, Vice President of vocational and medium-duty market development at Daimler Truck North America (DTNA).

“With our shared history, combined experience, and

the remarkable battery technology offered by Hexagon Purus, we look forward to yielding effective and flexible solutions for our vocational customers.”

DTNA's decision to partner with Hexagon Purus is based on its long-standing relationship and shared expertise.

Prior to the start of the eM2 collaboration, DTNA worked with Hexagon's Agility division on the development of Freightliner natural gas fuel

tank integration and together with Hexagon Purus, Hexagon's zero-emission division on DTNA's first generation of electric vehicles.

As well, Hexagon Purus’ high-voltage battery technology is known for its efficient kWh per metre of frame length, which aligns with the packaging needs of medium-duty vocational applications.

“We are proud to continue our long-standing relation-

ship with DTNA, and we look forward to supporting them on this vocational vehicle program and in driving their transition to zero-emission mobility,” said Morten Holum, CEO of Hexagon Purus. “DTNA has been an important zero-emission technology development partner for Hexagon Purus in North America for several years through our participation in the innovation fleet program.”

The Common Ground Alliance (CGA) has released a new whitepaper outlining key actions telecom organizations can take to reduce damage to underground utilities.

The report, titled Telecom’s Critical Role in Reversing Utility Damage Trends analyzes information gathered from 17 in-depth interviews with telecom leaders as well as data from a survey of more than 500 damage prevention industry professionals.

CGA has previously published whitepapers examining the roles of other key stakeholder groups in damage prevention, including natural gas distribution, excavators and locators.

CGA's new telecom industry research underscores the impact the sector has on the damage prevention system in

the United States. According to 2022 DIRT data, telecom facilities sustained more damage than any other utility type, while telecom work contributed to most damages to buried infrastructure.

Similarly, telecom companies are more likely to deliver late locates of their own facilities but are most likely to have work delayed by late locates.

CGA’s new research calls for the telecom sector to make damage prevention a priority.

The telecom report summarizes the survey and in-depth telecom stakeholder interviews. The data reveals that growth and customer satisfaction are prioritized over damage prevention by many telecom stakeholders. As well, rather than focus on long-term

national standardization strategies to reduce damages, telecom can achieve more timely results by improving internal practices and contracts.

Securing executive-level buy-in from telecom facility owner/operators on rigorous damage prevention standards will be necessary to

reverse the upward trend of damages to infrastructure.

“With the sheer amount of communications and other infrastructure work happening across the country involving excavation right now, it is critical that executives at telecom companies are actively engaged in damage prevention,” said CGA

President and CEO Sarah K. Magruder Lyle.

“Telecom has more underground infrastructure than other utility types – that means more facility to locate and protect, which certainly presents unique challenges. Leaders in this sector have connected the dots between network reliability

and damage prevention, and I encourage telecom stakeholders to implement the paper’s recommendations and reference the examples in our whitepaper of organizations who have prioritized damage prevention.”

Subsite develops two new tools for utility locates

Subsite has introduced its new real-time kinematic (RTK) receiver to the UtiliGuard 2 lineup and its GeoRanger XR series of ground penetrating radar.

The UtiliGuard 2 RTK receiver was designed as a simple, easy-to-operate utility locating option, making it ideal for operators locating, mapping and capturing underground utilities.

The receiver utilizes survey-grade technology and features dual-band antennas to provide operators with accurate and reliable positioning data with accuracy within a centimetre.

Its high-level of accuracy and precision make it an

ideal solution for locating abandoned and untracked utilities that are difficult to pinpoint.

Like the UtiliGuard 2 standard and advanced units, the RTK receiver provides locate crews with integrated data capture, GPS positioning and an intuitive user interface to help operators improve work quality and maximize locate awareness. By downloading the MyUtiliGuard application, operators can simplify and streamline how they capture, map and share data from the RTK receiver.

GeoRanger XR

Subsite’s new GeoRanger XR series of ground pene -

trating radar (GPR) systems is designed to identify both shallow and deep utilities –even those without a wire tracer — in one pass without the need to go back through with multiple frequencies.

The new GPR system offers better resolution on deeper scans, helping identify unlocatable or abandoned utilities. With dual-frequency GPR antennas, operators receive high-resolution scans without sacrificing penetration depth. The 750 MHz antennas identify objects up to about 3 metres in depth while the 350 MHz antennas detect objects as deep as 6 metres.

Additionally, the inte -

grated GPS system provides real-time steering guidance when paired with the GPS base station so that time-consuming scan grid layout and marking can be avoided.

Using the GPR system’s advanced software, operators can generate 3D results and mark detected objects for interactive visualization, reducing the need for manual hand-written updates.

The new GPR system offers a wireless connection system, which removes all troublesome cables for the operator. Unlike its predecessor that has up to five connection points, the new GPR system is completely wireless. On its predecessor

machine, there were five different connection points, but with the new GPR systems going wireless there are zero. This customer-driven

update eliminates the headache of jobsite set-up and connector wear and tear, increasing uptime and efficiency.

American Augers’ DD600 HDD meets evolving jobsite requirements

Horizontal directional drill (HDD) operators can improve their jobsite uptime and meet a variety of new jobsite requirements with the new DD600 maxi-rig directional drill from American Augers.

Replacing American Auger’s DD440T, the DD600 is designed with customer-focused features to enhance the power and performance of the current industry standard in HDD maxi-rigs.

“The new DD600 directional drill incorporates many features and updates that came at the request of our customers,” said Richard Levings, American Augers

Product Manager. “This latest drill further increases the power and performance capabilities that come with owning an American Augers drill. The DD600 is setting a new standard for productivity in the maxi-rig industry.”

One of the most notable features of the new DD600 is the 755 hp Stage V Cat C18 engine that does not require diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) — the only machine of its kind in this class.

The simple exhaust system increases uptime and reliability, eliminating daily jobsite struggles with DEF. Additionally, the engine allows for higher demand loads

Vacuum lifting systems require fewer people to operate compared to traditional lifting methods that use chains, slings or hooks. Providing customers with faster, safer and smarter lifting solutions remains the priority when developing Vacuworx equipment. All Vacuworx vacuum lifters are designed, manufactured, tested and rated in accordance with multiple safety standards, including ASME BTH-1-2020 for design of below-the-hook lifting devices, and ANSI/ASME standards section

B30.20-2021 for below-the-hook lifting devices. Vacuworx is also ISO Standard 9001:2015 certified for quality management systems.

Vacuworx Vacuum Lifting Solutions are fit for use in a variety of industries, including water and sewer, concrete, construction and demolition, utility and more.

Since the 1960s, CRD has been selling and servicing to these same industries across Eastern Canada.

CRD will be serving customers through it’s 10 branches in Eastern Canada. By holding a variety of Vacuworx lifters in their inventory, CRD removes lead times, shipping delays and exchange rate issues and will be able to provide the right equipment, at the right time through its expert sales and service team.

Introduced at the ARA Show in New Orleans, the new division is led by Senior Business Development Manager Rick Romney, who has 50 years of experience in the utility market.

without challenging the engine capacity and the Stage V engine classification meets emission standards for engines in Europe.

With transportation in mind, the DD600 maintains a small, mobile footprint on the jobsite. The weight of DD600 meets standard transportation requirements, meaning no special permits are required to transport the machine. The DD600 can also be transported without removing the wrenches, saving hours in assembly and disassembly time.

To reduce the time and number of people required for setup and tear down, the DD600 features a hydraul -

ic catwalk. Together, these features allow operators to work efficiently and versatilely to meet the needs of jobsites both big and small.

The DD600 is designed for a wide-range of projects offering operators the flexibility and versatility to tackle both smaller and larger-scale jobs. From compact jobsites to boring long distances and installing larger pipes, the DD600 ensures a seamless operation throughout.

Mary Pat Tubb appointed Deere’s Vice President of forestry

Deere & Company has named Mary Pat Tubb as its new Vice President of Worldwide Forestry, effective February 1.

Tubb succeeds Timo Ylänen, who is retiring after 30 years with the company.

"It is an honour for me to be joining the forestry team,"

Tubb said. "The passionate commitment and expertise of this team are the right ingredients for the ongoing advancement and growth of the forestry business. I am excited about the opportunity to lead and contribute to the next chapter of innovation and growth in this sector."

Tubb will be responsible for the overall management and performance of Deere & Company’s global forestry business.

She steps into the role with extensive experience and background.

Tubb has spent 25 years at John Deere, most recently serving as the General Manager of John Deere Construction and Forestry at Davenport Works in Davenport, Iowa.

"Mary Pat Tubb brings a wealth of experience

and a proven track record of leadership to her new roles,” said Ryan D. Campbell, President of Worldwide Construction & Forestry and Power Systems.

“We are confident that under her direction, John Deere's forestry division will continue to thrive and redefine industry standards, further cementing our position as a global leader in the market."

Andy Larsen named President of MFC

MFC (Minnesota Flexible Corporation) has announced the appointment of Andy Larsen as President, taking over for Will Stewart, who will continue to serve as CEO.

Larsen’s career at MFC spans more than 20 years, starting in 1997 as a Sales Representative, being named Vice President of Sales in 2003, and eventually Executive Vice President in 2023.

"I am honoured to assume this role and to continue the growth that MFC has experienced under Will’s leadership," Larsen said. “We have a talented team of professionals excited about what lies ahead. Collectively our focus will remain on exceeding our customers’ expectations as we continue our expansion throughout North America.”

His dedication and pivotal role in driving sales growth have significantly shaped the company’s growth trajectory. Larsen's knowledge of the company, its customer base, and the broader industrial market make him a logical choice to take over

as President, according to Stewart.

"We are thrilled to have Andy step into this role," Stewart said. "He has a deep business acumen and has proven to be a strong charismatic leader. Andy is well positioned to lead MFC as we continue our ongoing growth strategy."

Founded in 1969, MFC is a leading fabricator of industrial and hydraulic hose, fittings and formed tube products. The company is headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota.
