Hub Equipment technician awarded by AED Foundation The efforts of Alan Beavis, a technician at the Etobicoke, Ontario-based Hub Equipment, have been recognized by the AED Foundation.

Beavis is one of eight winners of the AED Foundation Knapheide Technicians of the Year award, presented at the AED Summit in January.

“I’m really pleased to be respected by my peers and employer Tom Stevenson.

It is very humbling,” Beavis said.

The AED Foundation explained Beavis’s skillsets exemplify what the Technician of the Year award seeks to highlight. Beavis has worked for more than 37 years as a Skilled Tradesman.

He is now in his eighth year at Hub Equipment, a Specialty Division of Cooper Equipment Rentals, where he leads the service department. His passion for both his work and for people creates a positive and motivating environment for everyone around him.

“I like the satisfaction of sharing my knowledge to the apprentices who have a willingness to learn, especially the excitement when they successfully do a repair,” Beavis said.

Alan’s interest in education has influenced his career, which has been full of interesting challenges across many industries, including open pit mines, heavy highway construction, refining and smelting, aerospace, marine, medical, natural

resources, aggregate, recycling, demolition and now heavy equipment rentals.

“Curiosity is the driving force behind my career choices. As a young child, I always wanted to know how everything worked,” he said.

Since then, Beavis has racked up an impressive list of education, training and certifications, including both 421A Red Seal Industrial Millwright and 433A Red Seal Heavy Equipment Technician certificates.

Beavis continues to invest his time and share his knowledge to help develop the next generation of heavy duty technicians.

He is a champion for safety, making sure his team goes home safe every day.

Alan plans to continue his mentorship of technicians following his upcoming retirement.

His commitment to mentoring and sharing knowledge with his colleagues, especially with apprentice technicians, is an invaluable asset. His willingness to pass on his expertise is crucial for the growth and development of future professionals in the industry.

He attributes his support for the next generation of technicians to his own mentors in the business.

“I have always believed that I have an obligation to continue their kindness by sharing their knowledge with new technicians,” Beavis said.

Following his retirement,

Beavis also plans to enjoy more time with his wife, Kathy, his three daughters and six grandchildren.

Tigercat creates new swing carrier mulching head for fire mitigation Tigercat has developed a mulching head for swing carriers in response to fire mitigation equipment requirements in western North America.

Wildfires are proving to be one of the greatest challenges facing foresters, landowners, governments and environmental organizations in the 21st century.

The summer fire season over the last several years in North America has devastated millions of hectares of forest land, destroying wildlife habitat and carbon

sinks, while releasing massive amounts of carbon and particulate matter into the atmosphere. Excessive fuel build-up on the ground is having a devastating effect.

Tigercat recently released the mulching head designed to mount on a Tigercat LX830E carrier. This machine can tackle steep slopes and operate within dense stands to reduce build-up of woody debris as a mitigation measure to guard against future wildfires.

The new 4161-15 head has a 1.5 metre mulching swath, 130-degree wrist pivot and a pin-on rake for added utility.

Like all Tigercat mulching heads, it is strength-toweight optimized and fitted with large bearings.

Many of the components, including the bearings, sprockets, seals and tim-

ing belt, are common to the Tigercat 4061 series mulching heads and thus field proven.

Hy d r a u l i c h o s e s a r e routed through the open tip boom into the top of the wrist, providing excellent protection. The replaceable wear liner is field serviceable. Removable covers allow easy access to all service points.

The L X830E carrier is powerful, compact and extremely capable on steep terrain. The machine features a 330 hp Tigercat engine, 8.43-metre cut radius and a 2.1 metre tailswing radius.

“If a homebuilder set out to layout a project with a tape measure and a transit, it would take two people to do the work that could be accomplished by one person using the 3D laser, so productivity is a key benefit. Another is accuracy. The user will be able to lay out the job more accurately than using fully manual processes.”

The LN-50 works exclusively with Topcon Digital Layout building construction software. The software is compatible with CAD and BIM software setups and can be used with the Point Manager plug-in for Autodesk Revit or AutoCAD. “The easy-to-use Digital Layout software controls the

3D laser and makes it ‘smart’ so that the user can lay out building corners or plumbing sleeves, for instance, and do it efficiently,” Kerwin said.

“The portfolio embodies our commitment to democratizing technology — simplifying and improving the process of transitioning to digital layout in the building construction sector in a cost-effective package.”

The LN-50’s short learning curve and one-person operation is particularly helpful in addressing labour shortages. By providing enhanced productivity, accuracy and quality in an easily accessible system, it reinforces the push toward providing intuitive innovations for both the existing and incoming generations of trade professionals.

Autonomy meets endurance

Sandvik develops its second battery-electric concept surface drill rig Sandvik is advancing its surface drilling technology with the introduction of a new battery-electric surface drill rig as well as a new testing ground for machinery.

The manufacturer recently introduced its second battery-electric concept surface drill rig. The BEV is the first in its size class, and capable of drilling DTH holes up to 229 mm diameter. The drill blends the autonomy of battery with the continuous endurance of a power cable.

Electric surface rigs have long depended solely on a tethered cable as the power source. With its second battery-electric surface concept, Sandvik showcases the latest technology advancements to push the potential of more sustainable surface drilling.

“With the industry shifting towards intelligent, autonomous and emission-free equipment, surface drill rigs need to be reinvented,” said Lauri Laihanen, Vice President of R&D, Surface Drilling Division, Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions. “This new concept rig elevates electric surface drilling.”

The intelligent DTH rig’s battery pack provides power for up to one hour of drilling or as long as seven hours of tramming. The battery is primarily intended for tramming and drilling individual holes, while the bulk of a pattern is carried out via power from its 180-metre tethered cable.

“The battery means greater freedom and flexibility and more efficient use of time, as the rig can drill immediately while the cable is being set up,” Laihanen said.

Ease of movement Sandvik designed the cable setup to be as effortless as possible. The cable tightens itself automatically according to the direction the rig is moved and is wound on a single layer. This allows a thinner, more manageable tether. An operating voltage as high as 1,000 volts also helps enable a lighter cable.

While Sandvik’s latest concept introduces battery-electric operation to a

larger size class down the hole drill, its subsystems and technologies are all tried and tested, mine-proven and energy-efficient.

Sandvik introduced its smaller top hammer battery-electric concept surface drill rig in 2022, which was developed to support more sustainable drilling in construction applications.

“Testing of the smaller concept with our construction customers has been very successful and produced valuable feedback,” Laihanen said. “We’ve learned a lot, and now it’s time to apply these learnings to mining, which has its own unique challenges.”

Real world testing Sandvik will test its latest concept drill rig in real-world surface mining environments in collaboration with mining customers.

“We need to identify the challenges, learn from them and share the knowledge,” Laihanen said. “The shift towards more sustainable mining will change the entire operating environment, and with the learnings from our latest concept rig, we can produce more value for our customers on their decarbonization journey. We’re excited to write the next chapter in surface drilling together.”

The site will enable technology development and training for both surface boom and rotary drill rigs, as well as rock tools, parts and services and

related digital technologies such as automation and fleet telematics and monitoring solutions.

The test mine will also allow Sandvik to explore and demonstrate power source alternatives in a real-world environment, in which infrastructure to support both

boom and rotary drilling electrification can be provided.

“Decarbonization is accelerating across our industry, and the role of electrification in surface mining sustainability will help guide our development of new systems and solutions,” said Dave Shellhammer, President, Ro-

Sandvik test pit Sandvik has acquired a new testing facility in Finland to develop and prove future surface drilling technologies.

The surface test mine is located 40 km northwest of Tampere and Sandvik’s renowned underground test mine. The area, which previously served as a quarry, will be developed by its own drilling plan. The site is Sandvik’s first dedicated exclusively to surface drilling on a large scale.

Bobcat imbeds augmented reality into skid steer windshield A new concept from Bobcat allows operators to see more than the immediate jobsite in front of them.

Advanced Display Techn o l o g y t ra n s f o r m s t h e windows in equipment into an augmented reality display. The transparent screen allows the operator to see both the physical jobsite, as well as numerous other data possibilities to aid in the task at hand.

“This is a canvas for us to add in a whole bunch more information for the operator,” said Joel Honeyman, Vice President of Global Innovation at Bobcat. “The possibilities are endless. It's a display that we can put anything on.”

Advanced Display Technology is a concept developed

by Bobcat in conjunction with LG Electronics and BSI Research. Built into the machine’s glass, the OLED screen from LG takes the place of the front cab windshield or side window.

“With the touchscreen, I can move information around, or I can expand that information,” Honeyman said.

“We get a lot of requests for a camera view off of the bucket, so you can have that on here too.”

The concept has been built into Bobcat compact loaders, excavators and telehandlers.

Bobcat offered a preview of the technology, incorporated into a S7X electric skid steer, at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES), held in Las Vegas from January 9 to 12.

At CES, the display was used to show a map of underground utilities on a jobsite.

“On a site map, you know exactly where those utilities are. So, you can upload that map in here and be able to see them,” Honeyman said.

“You could drive the site in augmented reality.”

Bobcat is also applying the tech to grade and elevation, as well as training for operators.

The Bobcat RogueX2 At CES, Bobcat also displayed its new RogueX2 concept loader. RogueX2 is a second version of the Bobcat invention. The original RogueX was shown at ConExpo in 2023. The RogueX and subsequent RogueX2 were built as a proving ground to advance the Bobcat innovation roadmap, evaluate customer perceptions and challenge the paradigms of traditional kinematics and machine functionality.

“It's a concept vehicle that

combines different types of technology around electrification, autonomy and connectivity,” Honeyman said.

“And we kind of just broke our own paradigms to say, ‘what does the machine or the future look like if you're applying this different technology?'”

Both the RogueX and RogueX2 loaders are all-electric and autonomous concept machines that produce zero emissions, feature a lithium-ion battery, electric drive system and electric actuated lift and tilt kinematics with no hydraulics.

The most noticeable difference between the two versions is the RogueX2 is wheeled, while the first RogueX features tracks. Both versions of the machine do not include a cab.

“Our roots are skid steer loaders. That's what we invented. So, if we're going to make a futuristic machine, we're going to make it out of a skid steer,” Honeyman said.

The wheels also allow the electric machine to operate longer than tracks, providing up to eight hours of runtime.

It also features axial flux motors, which gives the machine more tractive effort.

“It's just a really neat concept for us to try out a lot of different technologies. And some of these might sprinkle into our current lineup as we go forward,” Honeyman said.

Komatsu expands its motor grader lineup Komatsu is introducing the new GD955-7 motor grader to the North American market. The GD955-7 offers operators the control and precision needed to build and maintain haul roads for truck fleets of 100 tons and up.

The new machine delivers ample horsepower and blade downforce pressure for efficient grading performance. With faster working travel speeds compared to the previous model, Komatsu engineered the GD955-7 to increase grading efficiency while helping reduce maintenance requirements and total cost of ownership.

The 47,320 kg motor grader is powered by a 426 hp Komatsu SAA6D140E-7 engine.

The standard 5.5 metre moldboard provides up to a 33 per cent increase in productivity, while the 6.1 metre moldboard boosts productivity as much as 50 per cent.

As well, a long wheelbase and heavy operating weight allow the GD955-7 motor grader to achieve high blade downforce pressures at more aggressive moldboard angles for improved penetration and material flow in hard-packed road surface applications.

Despite its large size, the GD955-7 is able to maneuver tight U-turns on a standard 100-ton class haul road without the need to fully cut the wheel or course correct. The long wheelbase and large, 27-degree articulation angle allow a tight turning radius and provide maneuverability for narrow haul road applications in confined spaces and around obstacles.

“With significant increases in operating weight, blade downforce pressure and working travel speeds, this new size class motor grader will be a smart choice for increased efficiency on our customer’s mine sites,” said

Ammann America relocates to accommodate growth Strong customer growth has prompted Ammann America to move its operations to a new, larger facility.

The company will relocate from its current location in Davie, Florida to a site in Columbia, South Carolina.

“Ammann America is growing thanks to our North American customers,” said Christopher Perkins, Regional Director for the Americas.

“We are determined to build on that trust, and this new location is a way to better service our growing base.”

The central South Carolina location will provide Ammann America with improved highway access, helping ensure timely deliveries.

As well, the 30,000-squarefoot building is larger than the current location in Florida. The additional space will help improve the availability of products and spare parts.

The 4.8-acre site at 680 Clemson Road is large enough to host on-site machine demonstrations.

Ammann America will begin operation at the South Carolina site in March 2024.

The relocation of the Florida facility is expected to be finalized by June 2024.

GM and Komatsu partner to develop fuel cell for mining trucks General Motors and Komatsu have partnered to co-develop a hydrogen fuel cell power module for Komatsu’s 930E electric drive mining truck.

Lightweight and quick to refuel, hydrogen fuel cells are ideal for electrifying applications traditionally powered by diesel engines.

Hydrogen provides an effective method to package large quantities of energy onboard the vehicle, without compromising payload carrying capacity.

As well, fuel cells provide an excellent zero tailpipe emissions solution for vehicles with extreme hauling requirements, like the Komatsu 930E mining truck, with its nominal payload of 320 tons.

The mining trucks typically operate at a single mine throughout their life, which simplifies the challenges of sizing and deploying an effective hydrogen refuelling infrastructure to service the vehicle fleet.

“At GM, we believe fuel cells can play an integral role in a zero-emissions future, helping to electrify heavier-duty applications, beyond passenger vehicles,” said Charlie Freese, Executive Director of GM’s Global Hydrotec business.

“Mining trucks are among the largest, most capable vehicles used in any industry, and we believe hydrogen fuel cells are best suited to deliver zero emissions propulsion to these demanding applications.”

Komatsu’s fuel cell-powered mining trucks will provide an additional pathway for decarbonization beyond battery-trolley or battery-static charging solutions, without the need for additional charging infrastructure within mines.

Komatsu has set a target of reducing its global emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 and a challenge target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The plans for achieving these goals include reducing and eliminating emissions within the company’s product offerings, as well as in the company’s facilities and production.

GM’s target is to be fully carbon neutral in both products and operations by 2040.

“Finding new ways to power the equipment our customers need to do the vital work of mining and construction is a critical part of our commitment to supporting a more sus-

GM and Komatsu intend to test the first prototype Hydrotec-powered mining vehicle in the mid-2020s at Komatsu’s Arizona Proving Grounds research and development facility.

This vehicle will be

powered by more than 2 megawatts of Hydrotec power cubes.

GM has been conducting fuel cell research and product development for more than 50 years and is one of the only companies with a d va n c e d , h o m e g row n technology platforms for

both lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen fuel cells.

GM and Komatsu believe these complimentary technologies can help spur the adoption of lower-emission mobility solutions and help other industries beyond passenger vehicles meet their sustainability goals.

Ryan Field has always loved heavy equipment from a young age. That led him to his first summer job at Kawartha Golf and Country Club in 2012 working on the maintenance crew. Ryan was eager to learn more about landscaping, design and golf course management, so he attended the University of Guelph for Turfgrass Management. With his passion and hard work, he was quickly promoted to Assistant Superintendent. After graduating, Ryan decided he wanted to further exceed his career in hardscaping and excavating so he accepted a position with a golf course construction and commercial landscaping company in 2016.

After two years, he decided he wanted to start his own hardscape and excavating company. In 2018 FIELDSCAPE was established to provide amazing customer service to clients, constant growth opportunities for their team, and premiere hardscape and excavation service in the Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes areas.

When he first started his business, Ryan didn’t have a lot of cash equity. “Bobcat® had great financing options and their service was top-notch. During a recent demonstration, Portable Electric’s Voltstack 30k, an all-in-one mobile site power and equipment charger, played a key role in successfully charging the 8520C E-Paver, ensuring maximum uptime performance.

“With Level 3 charging, the same 15-minute charging window will lead to an additional 57 tonnes of asphalt. That extra production will be game-changing.”

The technology is also able to change how heavy equipment operation is con-

ducted, and HD Hyundai plans to introduce the technology in 2025.

“Our vision is for operators to be able to control multiple pieces of equipment anywhere in the world from a single workstation, and construction equipment operation evolving into a role similar to an office job or something that can be done remotely,” Bereket said.

X-wise is also advancing HD Hyundai’s autonomous goal. The solution is already helping operators improve efficiency via 3D machine guidance. In the future, X-Wise will upgrade 3D machine guidance to automate more complex tasks, like 3D grading with a tiltrotator.

“Learning from the operational patterns of expert operators, it consistently refines its AI providing optimal blends of power speed and angle pushing our productivity by as much as 60 per cent,” Bereket said.

“Our goal is not to simply improve the features here and there. But rather to

transform the most fundamental sense how we build our future,” he said. “Yes, it's going to be a huge challenge, but with great partners I'm sure we are capable of transforming the future of construction.”

A net zero future The Xite vision also includes technological requirements to create an environmentally friendly ecosystem. HD Hyundai has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

“Any discussion of our shared future cannot be just about artificial intelligence and robotics. Because, as we all know, the very sustainability of our civilization is under threat,” Lee said.

To decarbonize the future of the construction industry, HD Hyundai is developing electric machines and charging solutions, as well as hydrogen solutions for its larger equipment.

For remote sites, the company is developing independent power chains that could include mobile charging solutions as well as renewable power generation.

“As you would expect from HD Hyundai, we are all about action not just vision,” Lee said.

Liebherr’s tech-pack pump truck

The new 38 XXT features XXT outriggers, XXA stability assistance and the Powerbloc drive Liebherr has combined several innovative technologies to create its new 38Z4 XXT truck mounted concrete pump.

The 38 XXT offers a fourpart distribution boom in a practical Z-fold making it easy to handle while providing a very long reach for the 30 metre class. The concrete pump is also equipped with the Powerbloc drive unit and a semi-closed oil circuit.

Liebherr officially unveiled the new 38Z4 XXT at World of Concrete 2024 in January.

“We are extremely proud of the advanced technological achievements within this new model,” said Guilherme Zurita, Managing Director of Liebherr’s concrete division.

XXT-outriggers This model comes standard with XXT-outriggers and an XXA stability assistance system. XXT support shows its strengths particularly when it comes to narrow supports, so confined spaces are no problem.

“This specific design of the outriggers allows for enhanced stability and reach,” Zurita said. “In fact, this outrigger position is only possible on deeper pumps, due to our exclusive XXT outriggers. This results in maximum flexibility and productivity.”

The new XXA stability assistance system allows the concrete pump to be electronically monitored.

“The XXA stability assistance system raises the bar

when it comes to productivity and safety,” Zurita said. “The machine helps the operator to reach difficult pouring positions of the boom without relying only on their best judgment.”

As well, the modern radio remote control allows for precise boom movement, and the clear colour display shows operators all important parameters.

The design and kinematics of the boom ensure low-vibration while pumping. The shape of the charging hopper favours a uniform flow of concrete and exceptional material cylinder fill performance. Separately driven agitators push the concrete directly into the suction area, which works perfectly even

with concrete types that are difficult to pump.

Powerbloc A highlight of the new 38 XXT is Liebherr's newly developed Powerbloc pump drive unit. It is characterized by the fact that all hydraulic switching and measuring elements are fully integrated.

This eliminates the need for numerous hydraulic hoses and other components previously required. The drive unit is therefore unique in the concrete pump world. Features of the new system are its robustness, high performance, efficiency and quiet operation.

Zurita added the new 38 XXT is part of Liebherr’s plan to introduce a new pump model each year until 2026, in order to meet the demands of its customers.

“We have consistently increased the amount of equipment, not only quality but also in diversity,” he said.

“This is especially important as we address the needs and preferences of our concrete customers who are involved in a diverse range of applications.”

Liebherr’s compact concrete pumping solution for urban jobsites Liebherr’s THP80-LP truck mounted concrete city pump is its most compact pump in the truck mounted product line.

The city pump is designed to fulfil an industry need for a flexible boomless pump truck for line pumping applications.

Created specifically for the North American market, the pump maintains the same performance as the larger truck mounted concrete pumps. As well, it maintains many of the same features as the larger heavy weight truck mounted boom pumps, such as a 600-litre capacity hopper.

The THP80-LP offers greater flexibility and mobility for operators to move around the job site. The total length of the new Liebherr city pump is around 8.65 metres.

The pump is mounted on a twoaxle truck chassis and weighs about 10,290 kg, which is significantly

lighter than the truck mounted boom pumps. The weight is convenient for customers because it does not require a CDL, which allows more staff to operate the equipment.

The pumping kit features an open loop hydraulic circuit that is reliable and powerful. This system is in line with the same quality and performance the boom pump models offer, while requiring minimal maintenance costs.

The suction inlet has a greater diameter than the cylinder itself, ensuring outstanding cylinder loading and discharge, even on extreme concrete types. With the split wear plates maintenance can be done quickly and easily.

In addition, Liebherr offers a pumping kit option that allows high pressure application for extreme tasks. Operators can easily switch the hydraulic hoses on the

pumping kit, allowing the machine to provide higher pressure on the concrete. This pump produces concrete pressure in rod side configuration of 1,088 psi,

when switching connection, the concrete pressure at piston side is 1,813 psi.

Liebherr’s THP80-LP is quick to set up and easy to control with an

HBC option for the remote control.

The truck features ample storage with easy access to delivery pipe and hose on the deck and plastic water tanks for saving weight.

SkyMul aims to automate concrete prep SkyMul is designing a robot capable of completing the layout for rebar placement and post tensioning cables, as well as tying the thousands of ties required in rebar preparation for castin-place concrete applications.

Based in Atlanta, SkyMul is a robotics start up company founded by Georgia Tech alumni. The company’s goal is to automate many of the tedious, labour-intensive tasks required before concrete is poured.

“I've met two types of people: one who do not know

what rebar tying is and the other is one who hates rebar tying,” said Eohan George, SkyMul’s Co-Founder and CEO. “It’s backbreaking work.

You’re bent over doing a pretty repetitive task, day in and day out.”

Preparation work accounts for the majority of the labour required for cast-in-pace concrete. For example, on a six-day jobsite, five days would be dedicated to preparation, while pouring concrete would typically account for one day.

SkyMul’s solution is SkyTy,

an automated rebar tying solution for the concrete industry.

The semi-autonomous robot leverages machine learning and computer vision to map the work area and locate rebar intersections to find, classify and plan the work to be done. SkyTy does not require CAD files or site plans to complete the task.

“We have spent a lot of time on construction sites to really understand how things are done and how things can try to improve the process.” be optimized,” George said.

SkyTy is also outperforming its human counterpart for

rebar tying. On average, a human requires 20 seconds to tie one rebar section.

SkyTy can complete the task in 14 seconds.

In 2023, the robot was deployed to its first real world jobsite to test its abilities at marking layout for rebar and post tensioning cables. The next step for SkyMul is to test SkyTy’s rebar tying capabilities on a live jobsite.

Protech Diamond Tools has announced a breakthrough in its Diamond Matrix blades.

The manufacturer has developed a new generation of blades that deliver longer life and faster cutting speeds.

During the pandemic, Protech CEO and Geologist David Liao set out to develop blades designed specifically for Canadian aggregate. Liao has spent decades studying Canadian concrete and designing blades for the North American market.

The result of his research is fast cutting speeds and long life, a combination that means a more efficient and cost-effective blade.

The blades’ low dust design holds more water, reducing dangerous silica dust and creating a more efficient distribution of slurry and reducing dust in the air.

In the spring of 2021, Liao and his team began to test the new blades on jobsites locally and then in the United States.

Early results were encouraging but a few refinements were needed to perfect the finished products. The

production team, based in Calgary, Alberta, rapidly manufactured prototypes.

Every new prototype was tested in the field the same day ensuring Liao’s designs achieved the perfect mix of speed and lifespan.

By the fall of 2021, Liao was finally satisfied with his Diamond Matrix blades for cured concrete with rebar, including the 2131UT for high horsepower diesel machines and the 4512UT for medium power electric machines.

The new blades are now offered for sale to a select group of Protech customers.

Canadian aggregates vary greatly from the hard river rock (granite, quartz, basalt and sandstone) found in Calgary, to the crushed limestone found in Eastern Canada.

The Canadian landscape is dynamic and as it changes so do the aggregates, which makes developing the perfect diamond matrix a complex challenge.

Protech Diamond Tools has manufactured blades and cores for the Canadian and United States markets for more than 20 years.

LOOKING BACK AT CONCRETE

The contract included asphalt paving of the runways, while the aprons were concrete.

A Brantford, Ontario contractor, Johnson Bros., setup their asphalt plant on site and supplied aggregate from a pit about 50 km away for both the asphalt and concrete aspects of the job.

Originally powered by steam, with continuing updates including gas and diesel power, these mixers

were still utilized into the 1960s. By then, several manufacturers including Koehring, Jaegar, Blaw Knox and Rex were focused on larger batch plants, mixer trucks and slip form pavers for large highway and related projects.

Interestingly, during the Second World War, the British Royal Air Force needed pilots to be trained in Canada. Ontario’s contractors played an integral part by constructing 12 flight training bases in record time.

Camp Borden, Goderich, Mount Hope and Jarvis (located on the shores of Lake Erie) were just a few. Mount

Hope was destined to become a major airport given its location near Hamilton.

The Historical Construction Equipment Association (HCEA Canada) 2024 events include Wheels & Tracks, held June 8-9, and the ‘Last Blast’ event on October 19.

Cemen Tech unveils its CD2 dual bin volumetric concrete mixer Building upon its 55-year legacy in volumetric concrete solutions, Cemen Tech has developed the CD2 ­— the next generation in its line of computerized models.

The new dual bin volumetric concrete mixer was introduced at Wold of Concrete, held in Las Vegas in late January.

The fully automated addition to the C Series lineup features a unique split bin with individual compartments to transport and blend various supplementary cementing materials (SCMs). Notably, the mixer is equipped to handle fly ash, a crucial component mandated by various levels of government.

"Experience is our foundation, and it fuels our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in volumetric

concrete solutions,” said Connor Deering, CEO and President of Cemen Tech.

“The Cemen Tech CD2 builds upon this legacy, providing contractors with a tool that not only meets but exceeds their expectations in terms of accuracy, durability and efficiency."

The CD2 combines Cemen Tech’s volumetric mixing technology with a new SCM dual bin, enabling real-time mixing of individual ingredients at any proportions needed, without extra equipment or expense. The dual bin design also doubles the amount of mixes this unit can produce, further enhancing its efficiency.

According to Cemen Tech, the CD2 allows operators to produce a more durable and sustainable concrete.

The special split bins hold more than 3,250 litres of cement and more than 2,265

litres of fly ash, meeting the demands of a variety of projects.

Like other Cemen Tech volumetr ic mixers, the CD2 ensures precision in measuring, mixing and dispensing concrete from a single unit. Each ingredient — sand, stone, cement powder, fly ash, water and additives— is stored in separate compartments and mixed precisely on-site.

This approach allows for quick quality control testing, reducing downtime and material waste.

Aquajet Extender boosts flexibility for its Aqua Cutter 750V Aquajet is enhancing the reach of its Aqua Cutter 750V with the instruction of its Extender accessory.

The Extender is a flexible addition to the Aqua Cutter 750V that easily adapts to surfaces with height variations in overhead, below-grade or constrained-space applications. The Extender comes with a hydraulic hose package that allows easy mounting on the robot, with no need for additional hydraulics or other equipment.

With its full side shift capability, the Extender also enhances side operations between beams on structures like bridges and parking garages, extending up to 2.5 metres to either side. The extended capability for sideways applications requires the smaller protection cover over the power head.

Blastcrete debuts X-40D swing tube piston pump Blastcrete Equipment has introduced the X-40D trailer-mounted concrete pump system. The pump provides high-volume pumping in a compact design for a variety of applications and rounds out the Blastcrete product line with a low-maintenance, versatile pump capable of handling a range of rock sizes.

Capable of handling aggregate mixes up to 38 mm,

the X-40D provides a versatile pump solution that contractors can use for projects ranging from residential concrete jobs to highway infrastructure improvements.

porates a long stroke to push a greater volume of concrete with less mechanical movement, thereby reducing maintenance and providing a smooth pour.

The Mecbo Pulsar pump system has also been shown to reduce energy consumption by 30 to 40 per cent.

The reduction in energy does not translate to less power.

The 150 mm by 1,000 mm swing tube piston pump is complimented by a receiving agitator to keep the concrete mixed and primed for pumping.

The X-40D pump boasts 1,000 psi of piston face pressure, with a 12 cm discharge and the ability to put out 40 cubic yards of concrete per hour.

As well, Blastcrete engineered the pump for minimal maintenance to limit downtime.

“The durability of the product stands as a testament to Blastcrete’s unwavering commitment to producing equipment that is reliable, made in America, and easy to use,” Knighton said.

The 3,200-kg pump in-

cludes an integrated trailer to simply transport to jobs that range from creating piers for overpasses to backyard projects such as installing in-ground swimming pools.

The pump’s four crane lifting eyes also provide a transportation advantage, allowing operators to position the machine precisely where they need it. Forklift tubing is mounted to the lower hopper for convenient flat pack removal.

Blastcrete considered its customers and the environments in which they work with the design of this machine. It features a

wireless remote control to provide operators with the convenience of controlling the pump’s functions from a distance. The solid-state electronic components function in a wide variety of weather conditions.

Factory options that can be added include an auto lubrication system and a 12 VDC screen vibrator.

Power options for the pump include a 72 hp Yanmar 4TNV98CT-NKW diesel, a 74 hp Deutz TD2.9 diesel or a 75 hp electric motor. Both diesel engines are water cooled and do not require diesel exhaust fluid.

Safety first at aggregate and quarry facilities Innovative safety technologies help equipment operators take on the most challenging conditions Drilling, blasting and hauling are among the various tasks workers take on in aggregate, quarr y and mining operations.

Given the challenging nature of these jobs, it becomes imperative to mitigate potential hazards.

One effective approach is the integration of safety technologies on crawler excavators, wheel loaders and articulated dump trucks (ADTs).

Here are a few noteworthy developments in equipment for aggregate and quarry operations.

Transparent Bucket To d a y ’s m i n i n g a n d quarry equipment is designed and built with better visibility to operate as safely as possible. One newer feature on Develon wheel loaders is Transparent Bucket technology that helps minimize blind spots for wheel loader operators when the bucket is raised.

“The Transparent Bucket technology offers a supplemental view from a monitor inside the wheel loader cab,” said Jacob Sherman, Dealer and Product Marketing Manager at Develon.

“This technology allows the operator to ‘see through’ the bucket to the area in front of the machine. The feature is available for new dash 7 Series wheel loaders from Develon.”

With an unobstructed view in front of the wheel

loader bucket, operators can see objects such as large rocks, obstacles and even people in front of the machine — objects that would otherwise be obstructed from view by the bucket.

Camera systems Equipment operators in mining and quarry applications must see their environment to stay safe.

Around view monitor (AVM) camera systems are becoming increasingly popular on wheel loaders. They display a full view of the machine’s surroundings, giving operators greater confidence when working in tight working conditions. Depending on the machine, AVM systems can provide up to 360 degrees of visibility on the monitors inside the machine’s cab.

“AV M s y s t e m s a l l o w operators to see potential hazards and obstacles that may not be visible from their seat, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries,” Sherman said. “They also improve productivity and efficiency by reducing the time required for operators to look around and check their surroundings manually.”

Another key safety feature becoming standard equipment on much of today’s heavy equipment is a rearview camera. With a rearview camera, mining and quarry operators can be sure they are safely man-

Air-suspension seats and heated and cooled seats are

being offered to enhance operator comfort, which is particularly useful when working quarries. The climate control system keeps the temperature inside the cab comfortable and consistent throughout the workday.

Safety technologies on today’s heavy equipment not only help operators but can boost the overall success of aggregate and quarry operations.

Pairing these technologies with ongoing training, collaborating with industry experts and following regulatory standards will help further contribute to the development of a safety culture.

ONBOARD WEIGHING SYSTEMS Onboard weighing systems on heavy equipment are popular in mining and quarry applications. These systems use load cells and sensors to measure the weight of the material and provide real-time feedback to the operator to optimize the loading process. RubbleCrusher makes its World of Concrete debut RubbleCrusher attended its first World of Concrete in January and debuted its new RCS48T Screen.

The RCS48T enables the screening of material right on site, allowing for production of three different material sizes on one mobile machine. The RCS48T weighs just under 3,650 kg and has a large 1.2-metre x 2.4-metre top deck and a 1.2-metre x 1.8-metre bottom deck.

As well, the screen can be fed directly with an excavator or skid steer. This mobile screen is ideal for those hard-to-access areas because of its compact size.

RubbleCrusher was started in the United Kingdom in 1996 to provide a zero-waste

solution to contribute to a circular economy for small to medium construction and rec ycling projects.

RubbleCrusher designs, manufactures and sells smaller crushers that are mounted on trailers, skids or tracks and can be transported with a truck for ease of mobility from site to site.

The screening media centre employs 46 people and is located on a more than 9,000 square metre site. The new facility uses advanced and sustainable manufacturing practices, and the installed solar panels will cover about 50 per cent of the required electricity.

Titan partners with McCloskey to develop crusher flowmeter To monitor oil flow on a crusher, McCloskey International approached Titan Enterprises to design an appropriate flowmeter.

The requirements were for a much bigger thread than would normally be used for the specified flow range. The central drum of the crusher, which does the hard work, is basically a huge cylinder rotating on large bearings.

These bearings had to withstand the side load induced during the rock crushing, so the oil flow and pressure are critical.

It was vital for the flowmeter to not impede this flow and had to have a low pressure drop even at full flow with cold, highly viscous oil.

Titan’s OG5 model fitted the flow requirements but the standard unit’s 2.5-cm BSP threads were considered too small, risking restricted oil flow.

Titan’s OG Series of flow meters are designed to provide reliable, high performance across a wide range of applications. The company claims the meters are nearly immune from the effects of varying liquid viscosity, density and temperature. The measurement performance of oval gear flowmeters improves as liquid viscosity increases.

To accommodate the crusher, Titan set about redesigning the OG5 model in aluminum and with 32-mm connections to reduce the pressure drop at minimum t e mp e ratu re a n d ma ximum flow. As well, Titan installed an acrylic cap — a see-through cover so the operator could visually verify oil flow.

A cable loom was fitted so the flowmeter could be plugged directly into the customer’s wiring loom.

The final touch was to anodize the body of the meter to match the colour of the machines they were being fitted into, making these meters a very distinct OEM product.

The resulting flow device has proved to be reliable and to date more than 600 of these specialized flowmeters have been installed in the McCloskey family of rock crushers.

As well as adapting designs to meet customers’ specific process needs, such as high-pressure requirements and to aid chemical compatibility, Titan’s standard O G5 flowmeter has since been redesigned. These compact positive displacement flowmeters incorporate a new machined stainless-steel, high viscosity design for both the body and caps, which has also enabled an increase in the standard design pressure for these units.

Screencore’s Trident 125 Hi-Stak serves as two machines in one While mobile screens have integrated stockpiling conveyors, they are generally compact and often need to be augmented by separate specialist stockpilers.

As an alternative, Screencore is combining screening and stockpiling with the introduction of new Trident 125 Hi-Stak.

Screencore has completed the development and testing phase of the Trident 125, and the machine is now available for global shipping.

“The Screencore range of scalper screens has developed a reputation for advanced screening globally, being tough, productive, environmentally friendly and accurate,” explains Screencore Director Ciarán Ryan. “Likewise, the Screencore range of stockpilers has been developed to deliver huge stockpiles of materials, working with their own on-board power unit, or powered by a crusher, screen, or plug in mains or genset.”

Based on customer feedback, Screencore decided to combine stockpiling and screening into one machine.

The result is the New Trident 125 Hi-Stak.

The 31,000 kg Trident 125 Hi-Stak features a 3,700 mm x 1,550 mm top and bottom deck screenbox, a 1.1 metre wide heavy four-ply feed belt and a 1.2 metre wide fines conveyor with twin OMV500 drives. As well, the Trident includes 1.2 metre heavy chevron overs belt and an 80 cm chevron middles belt.

“The Screencore Trident 125 Hi-Stak really is in a class of its own. It combines the benefits of a modern heavy- duty pri-

mary screen with the obvious benefits of a 24-metre stacker,” Ryan said. “Essentially, customers get two machines in one resulting in remarkable reductions in carbon emissions, substantial fuel savings, and the elimination of the need for double-handling fines.”

Available in dual power, the Trident 125 Hi-Stak is equipped with a Cat 3.6 Tier 4, Stage V 100kw engine, a transport width of 3 metres and 4.7 metre tracks. As well, the machine includes catwalks on both sides.

“The Hi-Stak is set to revolutionize efficiency across various primary screening operations,” Ryan said.

“Whether it's within the confines of a quarry, sand and gravel operation, or dealing with soil and mulch, its capacity to effortlessly screen and stockpile large quantities of fines without necessitating double-handling or the creation of a wheel-loader stockpile is hugely beneficial.”

Rodrigue Gilbert named Canadian Construction Association President Rodrigue Gilbert will succeed Mary Van Buren as President of the Canadian Construction Association (CCA).

In November, Van Buren announced she will depart from the job after six years as president. Her last day as President will be April 30, 2024.

With this notice, CCA’s Board of Directors established a subcommittee to find her successor.

As part of the interview process, Gilbert, the CCA’s current Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Procurement Practices, successfully presented his vision for the association, and reaffirmed his commitment to the industry.

“I am excited to take on this new role and want to thank the board and sub-committee for their trust and confidence, and I want to thank Mary for her

leadership and mentorship over the last six years,” Gilbert said.

“I am ready to lead CCA forward to demonstrate the value of our industry and have our members’ voices heard and their contribution to Canada properly recognized.”

Gilbert has made a significant impact at the CCA in the last six years, including his advocacy work to raise association’s profile with

the federal government, the relationships and trust built with local construction associations across the country, leadership in standard practices for construction, his bilingualism, and the knowledge he has developed in best practices in contracting by overseeing CCDC and the modernization of contracting through the new SignaSur platform.
