AEM inducts Takeuchi founder, Eagle Crusher CEO into Hall of Fame Akio Takeuchi, Founder of Takeuchi Manufacturing, and Susanne Cobey, the CEO of Eagle Crusher, have been inducted into the AEM Hall of Fame. Takeuchi and Cobey were inducted during the final evening of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) Annual Conference. Both are credited with spearheading innovative product segments. “AEM takes great pride in welcoming Susanne Cobey and Akio Takeuchi to our Hall of Fame roster of esteemed industry leaders,” said AEM President Megan Tanel. “They both serve as inspiration for the next generation.”

Akio Takeuchi Takeuchi has been part of the construction equipment industry for six decades. In 1963, at age 29, he founded Takeuchi Manufacturing. Early on, he learned the value of listening to customers and understanding their needs. When a local business partner asked Takeuchi to create a new machine that would help his employees do their jobs faster, easier and with less manual labour, he listened. The result was the world’s first compact excavator. Since then, Takeuchi Manufacturing has presented more innovations, including the first offset boom excavator and the first compact track loader. “Akio Takeuchi’s strategic leadership within the compact equipment market, coupled with his attentive approach to customer needs and product development, has notably pioneered a distinct industry segment,” Tanel said. The Takeuchi Way embraces the spirit of creation, challenge and cooperation. To this day, Takeuchi listens to the ideas and opinions of the people who are closest to the end user. Takeuchi has always recognized the power of teamwork, believing there’s virtually no limit to what dedicated people can accomplish together. Today, Takeuchi Manufacturing continues to offer equipment designed to make short work of tough jobs. Takeuchi still believes that when you put your customers’ needs first, sales and profits will follow. He has not only built a solid, quality-driven compact construction equipment company, he has also built a legacy.

Eagle Crusher manufactures heavy-duty crushing and screening equipment. When significant industry changes in the 1980s impacted Eagle Crusher, Cobey spearheaded the commercial recycling industry in the United States, building the first American commercial recycling plant, Eagle Crusher’s Jumbo 1400, in 1984. Her innovations created a new product line for Eagle Crusher, and a new American industry. Under Cobey’s bold vision, the plant took crushing to a new level with its abilities to process high volumes of aggregate, concrete and RAP. These improvements saved innumerable tons of concrete and asphalt from landfills. A whole line of portable horizontal impactor plants soon followed, creating a boon for the aggregate crushing, the recycled concrete and the RAP markets. “Susanne Cobey, confronted with challenges in the crusher industry during the 1980s, ingeniously used Eagle Crusher’s technology to spearhead the pavement recycling sector, contributing significantly to concrete and asphalt waste reduction,” Tanel said. A female pioneer in a male-dominated industry, Cobey has dedicated herself to helping other women in the industry succeed. She has addressed the topic of women in the industry in numerous videos and news articles and serves as a keynote speaker and role model at many commencement addresses. She hopes that her experience inspires a new generation. The AEM Hall of Fame has been recognizing luminaries in the agriculture and construction equipment manufacturing industry since 1993, and includes such names as Benjamin Holt (Caterpillar), Joseph Cyril Bamford (JCB), Jerome Increase Case (CNH Industrial), John Deere (Deere & Co.), Gus Ramirez (HUSCO

IAMGOLD to deploy Canada’s first autonomous Pit Viper fleet Sustainability and safety remain top priorities for mining operations as they adopt new technologies to boost overall productivity. For IAMGOLD Corporation’s Côté Gold Project, their effort to adopt new technology coincides with their vision for zero harm in all operations and activities undertaken by their mine sites. This goal is bolstered by

IAMGOLD’s recent agreem e n t t o p u rc h a s e f i v e autonomous Pit Viper rigs from Epiroc to work at their open pit mine, located 175 km northwest of Sudbury, Ontario, which will help keep operators out of potential danger zones while drilling. For Epiroc, the five machines are the first fully autonomous fleet of Pit Viper rigs on Canadian soil.

“ The autonomous Pit Viper fleet has a strong reputation for reliability and this recent agreement shows our shared commitment to operator safety on site,” said Chris Graves, Business Line Manager Surface Drilling at Epiroc Canada. The blasthole drill rigs are also equipped with Mobius for Drills, a digitalization tool that imports drill plans and collects key data for

mining personnel all while enabling multi-machine control. The solution also introduces 3D-P, engaging Epiroc’s wireless networking capabilities that enables integration and connectivity with the mines existing networks. “ Th i s i s a n i mp o r tant milestone for Epiroc Canada, we are excited to collaborate with IAMGOLD to continue driving innovation within the mining industry,” said Charlie Ekberg, General Manager Epiroc Canada. With the introduction of new tech in both automation and digitalization, the Côté Gold Project is utilizing innovative techniques to ensure operator safety, increased longevity of their machines and a higher output in their surface drilling operation. “The Epiroc Pit Viper fleet is an integral step along the Côté Gold journey to be the first fully automated haulage and drilling mine in Canada,” said Francis Letarte-Lavoie, Operations Manager Côté Gold. “The existing four Pit Viper rigs are progressing

towards full autonomous mode, and we anticipate the fifth drill set for delivery in April 2024 will complete the fleet successfully. We look forward to continuing to develop the partnership with Epiroc in order to meet our milestones during this critical time for Côté Gold and IAMGOLD in general.” Alongside the Pit Viper rigs, IAMGOLD is ramping

up its fleet of autonomous mining haul trucks, with 10 Caterpillar 793F currently operating and a total of fourteen trucks commissioned. As of the end of September, construction of Côté Gold was estimated to be about 92 per cent complete. The company’s first gold target is scheduled for the first quarter of 2024.

ConExpo hosted the top introduction of the year

NET For 2023, ConExpo became a clear newsmaker of the year for readers of Equipment Journal. The products debuted at the trade show, held in Las Vegas every three years, generated the stories behind the majority of our most-read articles. Here are the Top 5 most-read stories from equipmentjournal. com throughout 2023:

was unveiled in 2019 as the world’s first automated construction solution. At the company’s proving grounds in Korea, Develon showed how Concept X could complete everyday jobsite tasks using autonomous construction equipment. At ConExpo, Develon showcased how Concept-X2 technology applies to the entire construction site operation process, ranging from surveying to the operations of construction equipment such as excavators and wheel loaders. The new Concept-X2 now includes a dozer in its autonomous equipment line up, as well as

autonomous driving and blade control based on global navigation satellite system (GNSS). The new version of the autonomous technology also includes Automated 3D grading with a tiltrotator; enhanced machine-learning-based auto digging and loading; an integrated work planning algorithm; and advanced E-Stop safety technology.

For the first time in North America, the company introduced its 4-cylinder, 4.4-litre hydrogen combustion engine, its zero-carbon emissions solution for construction and agricultural equipment. JCB Chairman Lord Bamford is leading the project to develop JCB’s hydrogen technology. “The JCB engineering team has made enormous strides in a short space of time to develop a hydrogen #4 JCB’s hydrogen combustion internal combustion engine,” Bamford said. “As the first construction engine JCB showcased its hydrogen equipment company to develop a combustion technology at ConExpo fully working combustion engine 2023 as part of the International fuelled by hydrogen, I’m delighted Fluid Power Exposition (IFPE). we are now able to present this

technology on the international stage.” JCB’s hydrogen combustion engine can be used in existing diesel machines with minimal modification, other than the diesel fuel tank being replaced by a hydrogen fuel tank. The hydrogen engine is being testing in a JCB backhoe loader and Loadall telescopic handler prototype.

Continued from Page 10 Construction Machinery Americas generated significant interest from our readership. Making their debut at ConExpo, the 3.5 cubicyard Hitachi ZW180-7 and ZW180PL-7 wheel loaders feature a 14,905 kg operating weight. The ZW180-7 offers either standard or high-lift front arms that excel in most bucket applications. Both loaders are powered by a 173 hp Cummins engine. The ZW180PL-7 offers a parallel link arm configuration. It is ideal for use in fork and tool carrier applications by keeping attachments parallel with the ground as the loader arms move up or down. This ability delivers increased control while loading or unloading items. As well, the parallel link arm configuration expands operator visibility when using forks and other attachments. To improve upon productivity, Hitachi has equipped the loaders with Approach Speed Control and an Auto Power Up function. With approach Speed Control, the travel speed can be adjusted with fewer pedal operations during loading, which reduces operator fatigue and fuel consumption. Travel speed is controlled through the five-speed transmission during short loading operations. Limited-slip

#2 John Deere excavators

#1 Cat’s C13D engine

In February 2022, John Deere announced it had acquired full ownership of three Deere-Hitachi joint venture factories. As well, the announcement officially ended the joint venture manufacturing and marketing agreements between the two companies. At ConExpo, Deere introduced its first three future generation excavators, which include the 145 P-Tier, 360 P-Tier and the 210 P-Tier. To create the new excavator foundation from the ground up, Deere built the machines in collaboration with its customers, who returned to assist with validating machine performance. With a new ability to leverage the entire suite of John Deere advanced technology solutions, the future generation excavators will provide enhancements in connectivity, safety, automation and grade management. “By having that design control, we can leverage the entire power of the Deere enterprise and all of the technological capabilities and advancements we’re doing,” said Aaron Klauer, John Deere’s Global Product Manager for mid-and-large size excavators.

Our most read story of the year is Caterpillar’s introduction of the C13D engine. The new platform can replace three existing engines in Cat’s portfolio. The C13D supplies comparable power and torque available from Cat’s current 13, 15 and single-turbo 18-litre engine platforms. The new engine platform offers up to a 20 per cent increase in power and up to 25 per cent more low-speed torque over the previous generation of Cat engines in its power class. As well, engineers designed the Cat C13D engine with 45 per cent less leak joints to improve reliability and maintenance. As well, service intervals are extended up to 1,000 hours. Depending on the application, the C13D also consumes between five and 25 per cent less fuel. The C13D is also the first engine from Caterpillar that was designed and tested in a virtual environment. Cat unveiled the new engine at Allegiant Stadium, home to the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, during ConExpo. To read the full versions of the Top 5 articles, visit equipmentjournal.com.

Cat is developing a hydrogen hybrid engine based on its C13D Caterpillar has launched a three-year program to demonstrate an advanced hydrogen-hybrid power solution built on its new Cat C13D engine platform. Starting early next year, Caterpillar will develop a transient-capable system f o r o f f- h i g hw ay a p p l i cations. The project will demonstrate how control systems and electric-hybrid components can help hydrogen-fuelled engines meet or exceed the power density and performance delivered by traditional diesel engines. Cat will serve as the prime contractor on the hydrogen hybrid project, providing engine research and development as well as system integration. As the project progresses, other industry and academic collaborators will be brought into the program to provide additional specialist expertise. The initiative will be delivered at Caterpillar facilities in Chillicothe, Illinois and San Antonio, Texas. “Every off-highway application has its own unique duty cycles, lifecycle demands and performance e x p e c t at i o n s, a n d t h i s complexity is driving the development of a wide range of power solutions for the energy transition,” said Steve Ferguson, Senior Vice President of Caterpillar Industrial Power Systems. “One size does not fit all, which is why we’ve engineered flexibility into the C13D engine to serve as our platform of the future.”

The project is supported and partially funded by the United States Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office through the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. It is included among 45 projects across 18 states and Washington, D.C., receiving funding to advance research, development, demonstration and deployment in several areas critical to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector.

ed natural-gas capabilities. Available for early OEM pilots in 2025 and scheduled for production in 2026, the Cat C13D engine is targeted for a wide range of off-highway equipment, including rock crushers, screeners and grinders, as well as trenchers, agriculture tractors, harvesters, self-propelled sprayers and woodchippers, material-handling equipment, and large industrial pumps.

The Cat C13D engine C a t e r p i l l a r ’s h y d r o gen-hybrid demonstration project leverages the performance, packaging and fuel flexibility engineered into the new 13-litre Cat C13D engine platform. Introduced at ConExpo 2023, diesel-powered versions of the Cat C13D engine offer eight power ratings from 456 to 690 hp with up to 3,200 Nm of peak torque. It provides up to a 20 per cent increase in power and up to 25 per cent more low-speed torque over the previous generation of Cat diesel engines in its power class. The inline, six-cylinder Cat C13D enables the use of renewable liquid fuels such as 100 per cent HVO, B100 Distilled Biodiesel, and even up to B100 Standard Biodiesel. In addition to using hydrogen, its core architecture is designed for the future development of spark-ignit-

The Government of Canada’s recent Fall Economic Statement points to positive change, but limited details are making the construction industry wary, according to the Canadian Construction Association (CCA). The Fall Economic Statement focused on housing investment, but fell short in other areas, the CCA explained, including measures to strengthen Canada’s trade-enabling infrastructure. About two-thirds of Canada’s GDP is from trade, yet the Economic Statement remained silent on bolstering Canada’s trade network, which pays for the social infrastructure we enjoy. The CCA applauded the announcement to leverage the Canada Infrastructure Bank to support more housing, noting the move finally recognizes the fact that more homes cannot be built without the essential housing-enabling infrastructure to support it. The construction industry has repeatedly emphasized this need to all levels of government. As well, the association notes details on the necessary investments are missing. “The industry is expecting to see a long-term, comprehensive infrastructure investment plan in the federal government’s 2024 Budget,” the CCA said in a news release.

The ass o ciation als o questioned the government’s approach to addressing the labour shortage in construction. “The industry is encouraged that the federal government recognizes the workforce shortage yet a focus on internal labour mobility rather than more progressive policy changes to immigration are not the answer,” the CCA said. “Free mobility within Canada is simply not an adequate solution to address the workforce shortage when collectively we do not have enough workers coast to coast. This is why the industry is calling on the government to help address the workforce shortage by overhauling immigration to attract labour from abroad. Finally, the CCA noted the Economic Statement’s commitment to getting major projects built faster is positive. However, implementation will rely in part on the government’s willingness to review and modernize their procurement practices. “This includes considering alternative delivery models and better balancing risk between owners and contractors,” the association said. “The Canadian construction industry will continue to partner with government to build a strong foundation for a stronger Canada.”

A trio of Rokbak RA40s join FT Aggregates fleet in Alberta Every year, the Albertabased FT Aggregates produces about 1 million tonnes of sand and gravel – the equivalent weight of eight CN Towers. Each of the company’s trucks moves more than 100 loads and more than 5,000 tonnes of material to crushers and screeners every day. When the time came to expand the FT Aggregates fleet, the company began working with Headwater Equipment

and decided to purchase three Rokbak RA40 ADTs. Earlie this year, the ADTs arrived on site at Pit 23, south of Camrose and were immediately put into production. On site, excavators load overburden into the RA40’s 38 tonne all-welded body. Each RA40 at Pit 23 hauls the overburden and sand and gravel material for production. Fabricated from high hardness 1,000 Mpa yield strength steel, a dual slope tailchute eases

the material ejection from the RA40 body, painted in the Rokbak sand-coloured aesthetic. “First of all, we love the colour and design of the Rokbak dump trucks,” said FT Aggregates President Shane Smith. “Since the RA40s came onto site, the operator response has been nothing but glowing.” Smith added the fuel efficiency aspect of the trucks is reducing their operating cost, while the auto-lube system,

RA40 performance The fully automatic RA40 transmission provides efficient gear shifting, reduced fuel consumption and increased operator comfort. The cab has pressurized capabilities and a HVAC and air flow system to offer more control and comfort for operators. The RA40 is also designed with an effective power-toweight ratio, which ensures material is moved as quickly as possible in all conditions. Rokbak’s fuel-efficient drivetrain delivers powerful performance and meets worldwide emission standards with low cost of operation and low environmental impact.

tronically activated exhaust brake and a six-stage modulating transmission retarder, the RA40 benefits from longer brake component lifecycles. As well, the RA40s auto-lube system ensures every component is greased at the right times, saving operation time and providing safe maintenance. FT Aggregates has six pits in operation across Alberta. Most material produced is sold into south-eastern Edmonton. The company does all its own crushing and screening, with 18 employees at Pit 23 for year-round operation. Pit 23 became operational in 2014 and FT Aggregates has resources at the pit to last another 10 to 15 years. That means the trucks could be expected to haul about 7.8 million loads and 39 million tonnes of overburden. Headwater Equipment is the authorized Rokbak articulated hauler dealer for Alberta and provides FT Aggregates with heavy construction equipment via direct sales, rentals, service and parts. Providing aftersales and services, Headwater Equipment will perform all the

scheduled maintenance on the RA40s free of charge as part of the package, keeping the cost of ownership to a minimum. “It’s great to be able to marry our partnerships with Rokbak and FT Aggregates,” said Scott Letkeman, Headwater Equipment Sales Manager. “We’ve been pioneering the Rokbak brand in Canada ever since becoming the first to acquire RA40s in Alberta. The Rokbak trucks are robust, reliable and hardworking.” The success of the three RA40s for FT Aggregates demonstrates the headway Rokbak is making in Canada. In the same prairie province, 500 km south of Camrose, another three RA40s are currently in operation moving huge amounts of aggregates, stone and rock. “The North American market is very strong for Rokbak,” said Rokbak Regional Sales Manager Greg Gerbus. “Endorsements from established Canadian companies such as FT Aggregates is helping our reputation grow further and we look forward to seeing even more of our units on sites in the region in the near future.” Barrie, Ontario

At selected events where DIGatron is participating, JCB will provide equipment to support track construction as well as a JCB 457 wheel loader for recovery purposes. Being an integral part of Monster Jam events and play, JCB will also be seamlessly integrated into the global Monster Jam merchandise program. Alice Bamford, daughter of JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford, explained her son Otis is the original Monster Jam fan in the family. “It is through his eyes that we realized how incredible it could be to join forces with another family business like Feld Entertainment as both companies share the same values of innovation, dedication, passion and attention to detail,” Alice Bamford said. “We are thrilled about the hours of entertainment that JCB DIGatron, with Tristan at the wheel, will bring to children, families, and our customers across North America.”

Therefore, this exciting new partnership is particularly special as it will provide an all-inclusive family friendly experience that can be enjoyed by all,” said Richard Fox-Marrs, President and CEO of JCB North America. “JCB prides itself in doing different, and having a little fun at the same time, so we believe the partnership with Monster Jam and creation of the JCB DIGatron is a perfect fit.”

the strongest, thinnest material on earth. Discovered accidentally in 2004 by two scientists in England, it is one million times thinner than a human hair, yet 200 times stronger than steel. It also has high light absorption of all possible wavelengths. Until recently, graphene has been cost-prohibitive to employ into large scale projects. However, TLC’s process has changed the cost metric. “A little bit goes a long way,” said Charles Chang, Founder of TLC. “Our patented process, licensed from Rutgers University, produces covalent bonded graphene mixed with various polymers to dramatically improve their mechanical properties.” TLC’s graphene-composites will absorb ultraviolet light from the sun and reduce degradation of the organic components of the “glue” that holds asphalt together, often the weakest link contributing to pavement breakdown.

Kubota Canada rolls out new RTV-X series Kubota Canada’s RTV lineup now includes the brand new RTV-X and RTV–X1130 — the highest capacity model ever created by the manufacturer. The RTV-X series features the Kubota diesel engine, VHT-X transmission, hydraulic dump bed and power steering that have made the X-Series the go-to option for commercial, residential and farming operators. The new RTVs offer an optional ProKonvert cargo box with carrying capabilities of up to a half-ton, along with three-way-open and the ability to convert to a flatbed without the use of tools. A redesigned and agg re s s i v e e x t e r i o r w i t h LED headlights and new heavy-duty multipurpose tires allows the X-Series to quickly complete an array of jobs. “The RTV-X was created with our customers in mind and expands off of our esteemed diesel portfolio,” said Justin Parrott, Product Manager for Turf & RTV at Kubota Canada. “We know our customers appreciate the base of our RTV products, so adding elements like the ProKonvert cargo bed and more aggressive exterior styling means they’ll have all the functions they rely from a Kubota RTV product, now with more capability than ever before.”

X-Series legacy The legacy of the X-Series begins with the Kubota diesel engine at the heart of the all-capable RTV-X. From towing and hauling to running through rough terrain, the engine ensures the machine will consistently meet the task at hand. The VHT-X (Variable Hydrostatic Transmission) allows for smooth and powerful acceleration, while wet disk brakes ensure the operator will feel secure and in control.

The full steel frame and CV joint guard, along with underbody skid plates, can take years of heavy loads and rough terrain, ensuring the most critical parts of the engine and transmission are protected. An optional spray-on bed liner for the steel cargo bed protects the bed from dirt and damage. The X-Series was designed with features to ensure even the hardest tasks are made easy. The hydraulic bed dump does just that as a single lever ensures even the heaviest loads will slide out in a matter of seconds. Paired with a towing capacity of 590 kg off the back receiver, towing is made easy and struggle free. Dynamic brakes and selectable fulltime four-wheel drive, with front limited-slip differential, ensure the operator is

Bobcat to open manufacturing facility in Monterrey, Mexico Bobcat Company has announced a plan to expand its manufacturing footprint with a new facility in Monterrey, Mexico. The investment of about US$300 million will expand Bobcat’s existing global footprint to create additional production capacity and manufacturing capabilities for select compact track and skid-steer loader models. The new facility is expected to create an additional 600 to 800 jobs in the region and begin production in early 2026. “As a global company with manufacturing facili-

ties, offices, dealerships and customers across the globe, we have seen tremendous growth and increased demand for our products,” said Scott Park, Doosan Bobcat CEO and Vice Chairman. “We are excited to continue growing our footprint to meet demand for Bobcat solutions worldwide.”   The 65,000 square-metre manufacturing facility is expected to increase Bobcat’s North American compact loader production capacity by 20 per cent. The facility will feature areas for welding, painting and assembly, as well as an on-site warehouse

and office space. Bobcat will implement state-of-the-art technology with an emphasis on quality, precision and energy efficiency. The Monterrey location will manufacture Bobcat M-Series compact loaders for North American distribution. regions. Bobcat will continue to focus on talent retention and hiring at all locations in support of continued expansion and growth. “This new facility allows us to design a manufacturing space for maximum efficiency, quality and production output,” said Mike Ballweber, Doosan Bobcat North America President. “By growing our manufacturing footprint, we can also further optimize our other global facilities to improve our operational efficiency and enhance employees’ workspaces.” Monterrey, Mexico was

selected for the new facility following extensive review and consideration of expansions at existing Bobcat locations, along with the potential for new developments at locations worldwide.

Monterrey was selected for its well-established industrial sector, skilled workforce, proximity to the United States, cost competitiveness and strong business environment, among other factors.

A Canadian iron ore producer has awarded Metso an order for two Vertimill 4500 grinding mills to be delivered in the third quarter of 2024. The Vertimill stirred grinding mill technology is globally recognized as a leading solution for energy-efficient grinding. Compared to traditional technology, operators can typically save up to 30 to 35 per cent of the electrical energy and grinding media consumption. “We are very pleased to collaborate on projects that support decarbonization of the steel industry through production of high-grade

and high-purity iron ore with sustainable processes,” said Graham Davey, Director of Stirred Mills at Metso. “A small footprint and easy installation are also big advantages.” Vertimill technology is an example of Metso’s Planet Positive offering. It is capable of handling feed sizes of up to 6 mm and grinding to product sizes of 30 microns or less. Vertimill is available in standard mill sizes ranging from 15 hp to 4,500 hp. Since the introduction of the technology in the 1990s, Metso has sold more than 540 Vertimill units for nearly all types of minerals.

(L to R) Ilhan Akmanol, co-founder of Akman Construction Inc. and Bastien Lacroix, sales specialist for Bobcat of Ottawa Valley, pose at one of Akman’s commercial projects. Ilhan Akmanol came to Canada at the age of 18 from Turkey and was told to go into construction. He got a degree in civil engineering and learned to speak English. He became a foreman for a construction company in Ottawa and then moved to Alberta for five years to gain more insight by working in construction before returning to Ottawa. In 1991 he opened his own residential construction company in Ottawa, along with his brother, Engin Akmanol, called Akman Construction Inc. “We did lots of hard work 6-7 days a week, just the two of us. I am one of those stories that proves that with a lot of hard work, passion and determination, you can do anything. I came from nothing. Just wanted a future for my son. It’s more than about money, it’s about reputation.” His son, Eren Akmanol inherited the business in 2008. “My son has taken the business to the next level,” proudly stated Ilhan. Akman today, is 90% commercial providing services such as excavation (shoring, backfilling, piling, and deep excavation), site services, road building, demolition, and residential excavation. Four recent big projects resulted in Akman hiring 80 new people. Two of those projects were one of the new Amazon buildings and the Canada Science Technology Museum. They also did a huge landscaping job for Buttcon. Next spring, they will be undertaking a huge development of

rental units. “Owning your own business doesn’t come easy. Cash flow is really hard, you just have to find ways to work around it and you will find a way.” Akman currently owns 16 dump trucks; they purchased five more and are now opening a trucking division. “Now we don’t have to wait on other companies to bring trucks, we can use our own while we’re excavating. Saves time for our customers and allows us to get more jobs that way. Most of the jobs we get are because of our good reputation. We finish jobs ahead of time. I have to give a lot of credit to our employees, my son, Eren who runs all operations now and my supportive wife. Our company is really still growing.” When asked why he recently bought Bobcat® machines, Ilhan responded, “We used to be another brand loyal but when the same track loader went from $65,000 to $140,000 in a year, we couldn’t justify it. We were going to rent equipment but then my supervisor, Terry Dubeau, came to me and said “Boss, got to look at this.” It was an offer I couldn’t refuse from Bobcat of Ottawa Valley, on a brand new Bobcat tractor CT2045 that I was looking for and I have been extremely happy with it. From there we also bought a Bobcat E35 compact excavator, a T64 and a T76 compact track loader. Bobcat machines

are reasonably priced. Very good deals. We use the Bobcat machines to finish basements, excavating, landscaping, plumbing/electrical trenches, etc. They are compact, dependable and have very little downtime.” “I had such a great business relationship dealing with Daniel Castonguay, co-owner of Bobcat of Ottawa Valley, seven years ago, and now with his sales specialist, Bastien Lacroix. Even though it is mainly Terry Dubeau, our supervisor who has handled everything with Bastien Lacroix, I know he has been taking really good care of us. Everything has gone so smoothly. Service is topnotch with them. I will be buying more pieces of Bobcat equipment from Bobcat of Ottawa Valley, so I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.” Thanks Ilhan.

COMPACT EQUIPMENT

BATTERY AS A SERVICE

Caterpillar’s 301.9 battery electric mini excavator will include a battery subscription to remove roadblocks to electrification To help alleviate the apprehension of transitioning from diesel to electric equipment, Caterpillar plans to retain ownership of the batteries in all of its 301.9 battery electric mini excavators. When the machine becomes commercially available, Cat will employ a Battery as a Service (BaaS) sales model. By retaining ownership of the battery, the customer will not be responsible for malfunctions Instead of being sold as part of the machine, the battery will be provided on a subscription basis. Caterpillar is designing and manufacturing the battery and will dispose of the power source a the end of its lifespan. “We own the battery, it's a lease. If any problems arise with that battery, then that's on us. We will swap that battery out whether you're a dealer, or whether you're an end user,” said Caterpillar Product Specialist Greg Worley. “We're trying to take out all of those obstacles of the transition from diesel to electric.” The 301.9 battery electric mini excavator made its first North American appearance at ConExpo in March as a prototype display. In September, Cat offered prospective users the opportunity to test the machine during The Utility Expo. Worley explained battery dependability is a common concern he has heard from operators at trade shows. “That's the good side of BaaS. It’s removing that roadblock by providing peace of mind. It sort of gets rid of that anxiety around what will happen if the battery breaks down,” Worley said.

Prevention via telematics The mini excavator’s telematics system allows Cat to monitor battery condition. If the battery requires maintenance, Worley explained Cat will know before the operator. “We know the health and status of the battery all the way through. So, our back office will know all of that long before somebody on the machine does. And if we see something going wrong, we will let them know they need bring the machine in to swap the battery out,” he said.

301.9 performance The slightly heavier 301.9 battery electric mini excavator delivers nearly identical specs as its diesel-powered counterpart, the 301.8. Both machines feature a 2.5 metre dig depth, a 3.9 metre maximum reach and hydraulic pump flow of 66 litres per minute. The battery-powered version will likely be available in a canopy configuration, without air-conditioning. “Our design intent from day one was to provide a machine that is the same or similar performance to diesel. And we've done that,” Worley said. “What most people operating the machine overwhelmingly said is they’re surprised; they didn't know a battery machine could operate like a diesel machine.” Equipped with a 32-kW battery, the 301.9 mini excavator can provide about five hours of continuous runtime, which Worley explained is able to meet the needs of many of the end users that own the diesel-powered version. “If we look at the stats for our diesel version of this, it's being used

for 40 to 60 per cent of an eight-hour shift,” he said. Charging the electric mini excavator is possible via a standard 110-volt domestic socket, a 240-volt single phase outlet or a DC charger. A standard 110-volt outlet will require numerous hours to charge the machine. However, Worley explained 240-volt single phase is readily available in many locations. “Most people have a 240-volt socket if they have a welder in the workshop. And even in a domestic house, your oven or your dryer all runs on single phase 240 volts. So, it's readily available,” he said. The DC charger is the fastest option, providing up to three hours of runtime in 60 minutes, and uses the 240-volt singe phase connection.

a consultant role to help customers determine if electric is the right tool for the job. “What we're gearing it to is sort of qualifying it. This isn't going to replace diesel totally. There are certain applications where this doesn’t fit,” Worley said. One of the qualifiers will be whether the job can be completed on a single charge. “The infrastructure is not really in place at job sites around the world to support charging multiple machines, let alone one machine,” Worley said. For example, in the utility industry, some contractors are installing the infrastructure required to create a grid, while others are hooking new customers up to the grid. “On the utility hookups side, customers have told to us they will only use a machine for about three Electric consultations When the 301.9 battery electric hours a day. This very well could be mini excavator becomes commer- perfect for them and get them into cially available, Cat plans to step into electrification,” Worley said.

By laying out a check list of qualifiers, Cat is aiming to ensure contractors have a good first experience with battery electric machines. “We want to keep developing this market, for the future and for the world, and give them a great experience,” Worley said. “We're trying to be good custodians of the electric industry within the construction business.”

Electric mini excavator availability The mini excavator is expected to start arriving at Cat dealerships in California and Europe at the end of the first quarter of 2024 as a rental machine. After Cat reviews its data from the rental period, the machine could enter the retail market a few months down the road. Canada can likely expect to see the 301.9 battery electric mini excavator late in 2024.

Yanmar boosts power and serviceability with new ViO80-7 and SV100-7 mini excavators Yanmar Compact Equipment has unveiled the ViO80 and SV100, the largest machines in its mini excavator lineup. The ViO80-7 and SV100-7 feature significant improvements to hydraulic efficiency, cab comfort and ease of maintenance. As the largest mini excavators in the Yanmar line, the machines are ideal for fleets and work in utility, construction, demolition and landscaping applications. “These machines are entirely redesigned with the operator and service departments in mind,” said Buck Storlie, Yanmar Compact Equipment North America Product Manager. “From more comfort and enhanced ergonomics to an open hood system that is incredibly efficient to work on, we’re confident operators will be thrilled with the new ViO80-7 and SV100-7’s performance and overall experience.” Operators will see the biggest improvements from previous models in the new cab. The upgraded space in each model includes a new suspension seat, more foot space, ergonomic foot pedals and a wider cab for easier entry and exit. Operators can survey the worksite more easily with an increased cab glass area. Hot days are more tolerable with the included automatic air-conditioning, while additional USB ports allow for convenient phone charging.

Increased power The 8,220 kg ViO80-7 delivers 18 per cent more power over its predecessor with its new 67-hp Yanmar Tier 4 Final diesel engine. The 9,700-kg SV100-7 includes a 72-hp Yanmar Tier 4 Final diesel engine. Both machines provide operators with increased attachment performance with 20 per cent more PTO flow rate. The ViO80-7 achieves a maximum dig depth of 4.3 metres while the SV100-7 can reach 4.5 metres. The ViO80-7 is a zero tail-swing machine

and the SV100-7 includes an ultra-tight tailswing. The zero tail-swing design allows the excavator to rotate next to a structure with less risk of hitting it. The larger SV100-7’s ultra-tight tail swing has little overhang. Both designs allow efficient work in tight jobsites that may be difficult for larger equipment. As well, improved engine output and hydraulics allow for more productivity and greater attachment performance. Those same improvements also allow for a 15 per cent increase in work speed, 13 per cent lower fuel consumption rate and 25 per cent increase in travel speed on slope.

2PLS hydraulics A new 2-Pump Load Sensing (2PLS) hydraulic system improves efficiency in both new mini excavators. The system increases pump flow rate under high loads to direct power where it’s needed and improve performance. Additionally, the system saves about 13 per cent on fuel consumption as only the necessary amount of flow rate is utilized. Operators can grade more effectively with the machines’ floating blade function for smoother operation.

Yanmar tech Yanmar’s ViO80-7 and SV100-7 include several new technologies compared to the previous models. The new features improve operator productivity and ease of use. Operators can see relevant machine information and options on the new 18-cm colour LCD display. Options include PTO flow rate adjustment, auto-decel mode and a new passcode lockout feature. Additionally, operators can see blind spots with the standard rearview and right-side cameras shown on the display. An optional LD blind spots surround view feature reduces O S further by showing a 360-degree view on the

operator’s display. This can reduce the risk of accidents and help avoid damage when working near obstacles or walls. Both mini excavators include Yanmar’s SmartAssist Remote telematics system. The technology is free for five years on qualifying machines. Using the integrated theft protection, the mini excavator’s owner can set a range from a specific location or a starting time, triggering SmartAssist Remote to send a notification if that range is exceeded. The telematics can also detect errors with electronic components and send notifications to service personnel and directly to Yanmar to streamline the diagnostic process. The machine’s owner is also able to view operational status of the equipment in real time and view daily work reports that track use of the excavator, useful data that can improve jobsite productivity over time. Finally, SmartAssist Remote can track

Reliability The ViO80-7 and SV100-7 mini excavators offer simplified maintenance and refuelling access. The new machines include an engine bay designed for maximum accessibility, and the cab hoods open quickly and put the generator, valves, radiator, oil-water separator and more right at maintenance personnel’s fingertips. A water contamination detection system takes reliability a step further. The new double locking quick hitch is operable from inside the cab and allows operators to quickly change attachments without leaving the seat. The hydraulic double locking function assures secure attachment retention without the need for manual locks or fasteners.

Ditch Witch’s SK1750 takes the guesswork out of track tension The new Ditch Witch SK1750 mini stand-on skid steer is equipped with TriTrax, a patent-pending track system to boost productivity and create a smoother ride. The new track system features a tension check window, which allows operators to visually check track tension, which saves time and helps operators feel confident in their routine maintenance checks. The track system also includes redesigned rollers and an upgraded outer frame. “The reason why it's the TriTrax system is it has three benefits,” said Brant Kukuk Product Manager at Ditch Witch. “One is it has a better ride for the customer,

and we’ve increased the roller life two to three times over its predecessor. And third, it has the tension window that allows you to know if your rubber is tensioned properly.” Detracking is a common problem with stand-on skid steer track systems leading to downtime. With TriTrax, when the tracks have the correct tension, a silver plate lines up in a vertical slot to provide visual confirmation for the operator. “In the past, you had to hook up a gauge or you had to slap it to see how tight it is or kick it like a tire. It's just not science,” Kukuk said. “This is now a scientific measurement that you know exactly

if it's properly tensioned to keep your rubber on.” The SK1750 is the second largest mini stand-on skid steer in Ditch Witch’s five-machine lineup and replaces the SK1550. Weighing 1,946 kg, the machine features a, 827-kg operating capacity, a 2.4- metre maximum hinge pin height and 60.6 litres per minute of hydraulic flow. As well, adjustable auxiliary flow allows the operator to run each attachment at its most efficient, productive rate, while the 332 square inch operator platform provides a stable, comfortable ride. The mini stand-on skid steer is powered by a 43.5 hp Tier 4 Final Yanmar engine.

Hyundai’s HX-A series compact excavators are now available in North America HD Hyundai Construction Equipment’s new HX-A series of compact hydraulic excavators are now available in North America. Hyundai held the first public showing of the new HX35AZ, HX40A and HX48AZ compact excavators earlier this year at ConExpo. “Utility contractors – and others – can see firsthand why we are calling these Hyundai machines ‘the new standard in compact excavators.’ Productivity-driving features, such as automatic blade float, hydraulic quick coupler, built-in lifting hook, and guards for boom, arm and bucket hydraulics come standard on these new

machines,” said Jeff Pate, Vice President of Compact Equipment Sales, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment North America. “These three models build on Hyundai’s decades-long history of leadership in compact excavator design, engineering and manufacturing.” All three new models feature low-emission engines that are Tier 4 Final compliant. The Hyundai HX35AZ excavator is powered by a Kubota D1703 diesel engine with a net power rating of 24.8 hp, while the HX40A and HX48AZ feature Yanmar 4TNV88C engines, rated at 37.4 hp.

Liebherr’s first telescopic crawler crane with VarioBase

With a 150-tonne lifting capacity, Liebherr expands its telescopic crawler crane line-up with the new LTR 1150 Liebherr has introduced its new LTR 1150 telescopic crawler crane, the first machine of its kind to be equipped with the VarioBase system. The VarioBase variable supporting base not only provides improved safety for telescopic mobile cranes, but also allows significantly higher load capacities, especially for lifts directly over the supports. The system determines the optimum load capacity in real time depending on the fixed track width and the variable rotation angle. The greatest advantages for load capacity is achieved when performing lifts over the corners of the tracks, especially with reduced track widths. A maximum track width of 5.8 metres, a reduced width of 5.0 metres and a narrow 3.5-metre track width are available. As with the other Liebherr LTR cranes, the LTR 1150 is equipped with load charts for slopes up to a maximum of 4 degrees, in gradations of 0.3, 0.7, 1.5, 2.5 and 4 degrees. For the first time, Liebherr has also calculated windspeed load charts for the new LTR 1150, which makes it possible to work safely and flexibly — even at higher permissible wind speeds of up to

15.6 metres per second, with the full load capacity in many boom positions. With the launch of the LTR 1150, Liebherr is responding to the requirements of crane operators faced with lifting jobs that are beyond the LTR 1100, but for which the LTR 1220 is overkill. The 150-tonne LTR 1150 is positioned exactly between the LTR 1100 and the LTR 1220. Although the new crane offers around 50 per cent more lifting capacity than the LTR 1100, it can be transported just as easily and economically as its 100-tonne sibling – complete with crawler carriers at a total weight of 60 tonnes and a transport width of 3.5 metres, or optionally without crawler carriers at a total weight of 38 tonnes and a width of 3 metres.

Low-loader transport Another highlight of the new LTR 1150 telescopic crawler crane is its economical transport concept. According to Liebherr, no other telescopic crawler crane on the market in the LTR 1150 load class can be transported on low-loaders complete with crawler carriers with a width of just 3.5 metres. The LTR 1150 not only makes this possible but

also has a total weight of just 60 tonnes. For this reason, Liebherr has coined the slogan "Compact and strong, transport in one" for the new crane. Optionally, the new LTR 1150 telescopic crawler crane can be transported with a width of 3 metres by removing the crawler carriers, which reduces the crane's transport weight to 38 tonnes. This variant requires elevating the machine with the use of four swivelling cylinders, which support the crane on the ground while the tracks are removed and the low-loader positions itself under the crane. This principle has proven its effectiveness with the 100-tonne LTR 1100. Now, on the LTR 1150, an automatic support system assists the operator. This was developed to allow faster and easier assembly or disassembly of the crawler carriers. The two crawler carriers, each weighing 11 tonnes, can be transported together on a standard semi-trailer with an economical width of 2.55 metres. The integrated access steps are folded in during transport. In terms of ballast distribution, a strong emphasis

was also placed on ensuring economical transport worldwide. With only four lifts, the entire counterweight can be ballasted on the crane: two lifts for the two 11-tonne central ballasts and two for the maximum slewing platform ballast of 41 tonnes. As with all Liebherr LTM cranes, this is attached to the slewing platform using a hydraulic ballasting device. Liebherr-AutoBallast supports the crane driver during this process. The support for the slewing platform ballast is integrated in the central ballast.

Wind farm ready Thanks to its pick and carry characteristics, the new LTR 1150 is ideal for auxiliary tasks in the assembly of wind turbines. It is capable of assembling crawler cranes up to the 1,000-tonne class and can move components weighing more than 60 tonnes. Wind turbine components such as nacelles and hubs are in a similar weight range. As well as unloading these parts from the transport vehicles, the LTR 1150 can also drive them around the construction site without load restrictions. This unique feature of

telescopic crawlers in the telescopic crane sector also makes the machines appealing on construction sites where numerous lifts are required in different places. With the short, powerful erection jib and the additional hoist gear, the LTR 1150 can move loads weighing up to 34.6 tonnes into the desired position. The range of working equipment for the 52-metre telescopic boom also inc l u d e s a hy d rau l i ca l l y adjustable double folding jib and telescopic boom extensions that allow hoisting heights of up to 83 metres.

Link-Belt Cranes 175|AT answers the call for cell tower work PDI National Cranes recently expanded its fleet with the addition of a new Link-Belt Cranes 175|AT all terrain crane. The crane was added to the company’s taxi fleet, which specializes in commercial, industrial, and general construction in the Greater Toronto Area. As part of the PDI Group of Companies in King, Ontario, PDI National Cranes'

fleet consists of boom trucks and mobile cranes ranging from 30 tonnes to 200 tons. According to Dallen Rands, Branch Manager for PDI National Cranes, the 150-tonne all terrain crane is ideal for cell tower work due to its ease of transport, one overflow truck and quick setup time. “In Ontario we can run boom over the front, so no dolly is required,” Rands said. “Then, we only need one truck and once we stack counterweight on the deck of the crane from the overflow, now we have a clean work platform for the fly, which we typically use the SmartFly for cell tower work. It’s a very clean setup without anything extra.” A common cell tower setup for PDI is usually just over 60.9 metres tall and made up of five segments. The base triangular section of the tower is erected in place on the ground and can measure 7.3 metres wide, leg to leg. The tower segments taper as it rises, with the largest section measuring 17.3 metres tall. The segments

vary in weight from 2,721 to 3,628 kg. “Once I get the next section within two to three feet, I am able to fine meter on the crane, and on the camera as well as on the winch to precisely put it in place, just like the guys would want. Everything worked out perfect,” said PDI National Cranes Operator Peter Gumney. PDI National Cranes is a taxi rental business so being able to quickly setup for varying cell towers or other applications is important. Gumney estimates the set-up time for the Link-Belt Cranes 175|AT is about 30 to 40 minutes. “The way the crane walks with full counterweight and jib erected on a job, that exceeded my expectations,” Gumney said. “A recent project we did involved moving the crane with the counterweights and jib erected. It was a total of eight setups, and it was totally amazing how fast the crane could move from set up to set up.”

LOOKING BACK AT LIFTING By HCEA Canada Pictured here in 1932 is the Welland Ship Canal Gate Lifter on its trial run. It was an excellent example of Canadian ingenuity. Built in Ontario by the Collingwood Shipyards, this 1,088-tonne barge-mounted hoist was claimed to be the largest capacity unit worldwide at the time. To handle the large lock gates, the steam powered electric lifter was nearly 40 metres in height with s t ab i l i t y c o nt ro l l e d by hull-mounted ballast tanks. One of nearly a dozen sub-contractors on this complicated build was Hamilton-based Westinghouse Ltd. They outfitted the electrical equipment, including control panels, to help complete the unique heavy lifter. Built over a two-year period, the manufacturing cost was more than $1.3 million, an impressive sum for 1930 dollars. The Welland Ship Canal was built between 1913 and 1935. Work was halted by the First World War and then again in 1929 during the Great Depression. During construction, some 139

Tadano reaches new safety heights with its AC 5.250-2 Tadano’s new AC 5.250-2 all terrain crane is combining ease of transport with strong lifting capacities. While a prototype of the crane was displayed at bauma in 2022, Tadano has added a number of additional features that represent a significant upgrade to the AC 5.250-2, particularly in the area of safety. Lifting capacities have also increased, as much as 30 per cent higher than previous best values in the class. This enables the AC 5.250-2 to deliver a lifting capacity of 14.5 tonnes with a 70-metre boom length at a radius of 12 to 24 metres. Its lifting capacity also reaches 11 tonnes at a radius of 42 metres with a boom length of 47 metres. The 70-metre main boom can be extended by 42 metres with a HAV main boom extension, making it possible to reach a system length of 112 metres. All available main boom extensions from 5.8 to 36 metres are self-rigging.

Counterweight concept The crane can pick up its total counterweight of 80 tonnes in three lifts: 49.6 tonnes with a full 360-degree radius of up to 6.2 metres followed by two lifts of 15.2 tonnes, with each split into 10 and 5.2 tonnes for mounting on the right and left of the base package. If necessary, the counterweight can be split into smaller pieces as well, making it possible, for example, to pick up the 5.5-tonne base plate from a distance of up to 20.1 metres across the full radius. “Thanks to the IC-1 Plus crane control system, which comes as standard, the available radius can even be significantly increased at certain slewing angles,” said Tadano Project Manager Peter Kleinhans. As well, the counterweight can be split into several pieces with none weigh-

ing more than 10 tonnes to ensure flexibility for transportation. This allows relatively small trucks to be used for transportation when required.

Transport configurations The AC 5.250-2 can carry a three-sheave hook block for lifting loads of up to 67.3 tonnes or a 5.8-metre heavylift runner on board while remaining within a 12-tonne axle load configuration. Also, a payload of several hundred kilograms at the rear end is possible, while travelling on 16-inch steel rims. This means the crane can be used as a taxi crane without a support vehicle while remaining within the legal axle load limit of 12 tonnes. And if the axle load is increased to 16.5 tonnes, it can also carry up to 20 tonnes of its maximum counterweight of 80 tonnes.

Tadano tech The IC-1 Plus crane control system determines the crane’s maximum lifting capacity for every boom position as a function of the superstructure’s slewing angle, and in real time. As a result, the crane is able to take advantage of the maximum lifting capacity available, especially during lifts over the outriggers. The AC 5.250-2 benefits from this tremendously, as its outriggers can be extended asymmetrically to 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 per cent positions. Also as an option, the Surround View camera system makes it easier for crane operators to position the crane at work sites is available. This patented system uses six crane cameras to show a computer-assisted diagram of the maximum possible extension lengths for the outriggers at the crane’s current location. “With Tadano Surround View, crane operators can take a look at a display in

the cab to know exactly how they need to position the crane at their work site in order to extend all outriggers sufficiently and ensure that they are using the required counterweight tailswing radius,” Kleinhans said. “This eliminates tedious and time-consuming measurements and testing when looking for a location from which to operate the crane, making the latter ready for use faster,” Kleinhans said.

TailGUARD and Lift Adjuster Tadano added its TailGUARD active backup assist system as an additional technological innovation to maximize safety during travel. The system uses two ultrasonic sensors to monitor the area behind the crane when backing up, and works regardless of ambient light conditions. It shows the distance from stationary and moving objects on the cab’s monitor, plays an acoustic warning before reaching obstacles and will stop the crane itself if there is a risk of collision. The backup assist system is automatically activated the moment the crane’s reverse gear is engaged, making backing up significantly safer. It not only prevents injuries and property damage, but also crane downtimes associated with accidents. In the future, the AC 5.250-2 will be equipped with Lift Adjuster, which is one of a kind worldwide and is scheduled to become available for the crane in the coming year. The system consists of a technical control system activated with the press of a button to measure the boom’s deflection and independently adjusts the lift cylinder in order to compensate for the change in radius caused by the aforementioned deflection and to eliminate the risk of swinging. This way, the Lift

Adjuster significantly im- ment. Raimondi luffing jib helps construct new condo in Bloor Yorkville Upon completion, the 55 Charles Condos development in the Bloor Yorkville neighbourhood of Toronto will feature the city’s “most elegant architecture,"according to the developer. The 48-storey tower’s design is defined by a building block pattern of balconies, clad in stone, glass and stainless steel. Designed by architectsAlliance for MOD Developments, the 167-metre-tall luxury residence will feature about 665 units alongside numerous amenities. In October, the building was topped off, about three years after its ground-breaki n g c e re m o n y . D u r i n g construction, Avenue Building Corporation deployed a Raimondi LR273 luffing crane for the jobsite. “The Raimondi LR273 is one of the best-selling

models for this type of development in Canada, especially in major metropolises like Toronto,” said Jim Patullo, President, of Avenue Building Corporation. “High-rise buildings are in increasing demand and swing rights are an issue; making this crane an apt onsite asset.” He noted the same luffing model was employed for the construction of the first Nobu Residences and Hotel in downtown Toronto, which had similar construction requirements. “The features of this versatile machine, including the out of service radius and the ease of its internal climbing, allow us to install the luffer on several ‘zero lot line’ projects,” Patullo said. Located in a congested area, 55 Charles Condo is surrounded by several other

high-rise developments in Bloor Yorkville. The 18-tonne maximum lifting capacity crane is at work with a 40metre jib, clocking in at 15 metres out of service radius with a tip load of 8.2 tonnes in UltraLift. Erected on a 6 GR6L tower section on a concrete pad in the below ground parking at level 4, the 36 metre tower height has been climbed off internally for the past two years until reaching the final height of 167 metres above ground level. Sitting now on the roof, the LR273 is approaching the final stages of the project, with the expected dismantling date scheduled for December 2023.

“Another asset of this luffer is the ability to promptly switch from two falls to four falls and reverse, allowing to lift large generators, air handling units, BMUs, and more without any downtime,” Patullo said. “This ensures that the developer gets its necessary equipment in place cost-effectively and quickly. Further, equipped with an 86 kW hoisting gear, the LR273 can lift at a maximum speed of 204 metres per minute and have a drum capacity of 980 metres, boasting excellent lifting performances and meeting site deadlines.” He added the weight-optimized luffer is also easy to

assemble and delivers an excellent load curve. “O u r f l e e t c u r r e n t l y counts seven Raimondi cranes, all deployed across different sites in Toronto,

and we are pleased to anticipate that two additional LR273 luffing jib cranes will shortly go up in another key development of the city,” Patullo said.
