“Get active in public policy” labour minister tells World Demolition Summit David Piccini, Ontario’s new Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, called upon the province’s demolition industry to “get active” in public policy.

Piccini recently moved into his new Minister role, following the resignation of Monte McNaughton in September.

“Too often public policymakers, academics and others who've never stepped foot on the jobsite will tell you the only way to a net zero future is through retrofits alone. You all know that's not the reality,” Piccini told the World Demolition Summit, which was held in Toronto on October 18-19.

He explained the economic circularity created by demolition is impressive from an environmental standpoint and creates new opportunities in recycling and job creation.

“So please get active. We know that our success as a province depends on you.

We need to build things, our schools, our hospitals, everything depends on you,” Piccini said.

He added the province needs an “all hands on deck” approach to construction to tackle the housing and transit plans promised by the provincial government.

Jobsite safety Piccini also noted the provincial government is making jobsite safety a priority. He explained provincial inspectors are visiting jobsites across the province to ensure workers are safe. As well, Ontario has also increased fines under the Occupational Health & Safety Act to the highest amount in Canada.

“The safety of workers is non-negotiable,” he said.

“We're going to continue to work tirelessly with employers to improve conditions on job sites across the province.”

“I designed this product after I became frozen to the track frames of my (dozer) one night after falling asleep while cleaning them,” said ThermoTraxx Co-owner and Operator, Dana Hennessy.

“At that point, I knew there had to be something out there to help with cleaning your tracks during the winter. After months of searching, and realizing no one offered a system like this, I decided to design these units.”

To date, ThermoTraxx has created models that fit the John Deere 700K, 700L and 850J dozers, and plan to introduce new models to cover all Deere dozers, track loaders and excavators. The company plans to begin designing ThermoTraxx units for other OEMs next year.

Hangcha Forklift Canada has opened a new warehouse in Mississauga, Ontario.

The 2,787 square metre warehouse aims to expand the company's reach throughout Canada.

“With product support, parts support and technical training that is second to none, the Mississauga warehouse is increasing our ability to support and grow Hangcha Canada’s footprint in Ontario. This is a positive move forward,” said Randy Thistel, Hangcha Canada's Ontario Sales Representative.

As a subsidiary of Hangcha Group, Hangcha Canada offers a range of material handling solutions tailored to meet the needs of the Canadian market.

The new facility complements the existing warehouses in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec, and Vancouver, allowing the

company to maintain an inventory of 550 units at any given time.

“Hangcha Canada’s expansion plan signifies our dedication to Canada's material handling industry,” said Robert Pitzul, Vice President of Sales at Hangcha Canada.

It will fit anywhere, and we have had it rented out any time we are not using it! We bought a Bobcat snow blower and sweeper to do sidewalks in the winter. It is also great for moving material, soil, mulch, gravel, etc. We will probably order another one. Sarens helps complete storm trap installation in Burlington, Ontario Sarens recently deployed a Liebherr LTM 1070 mobile crane to assist Valentine Underground Services complete a storm trap installation in Burlington, Ontario.

The Sarens team was able to place about 30 pieces weighing 3,200 kg each, managing to install the tank modules within three days.

Storm traps are stormwater infiltration and detention systems. These huge subway tanks have an important function: they regulate its water flow to treatment plants.

Storm traps store the first rainwater, which is the most contaminated as it carries pollutants accumulated from roadways. Thus, the tanks prevent the treatment plants from exceeding their maximum flow and having to discharge the excess, untreated, into the receiving watercourses.

"The idea is that before reaching the tanks, the water passes through a series of filters to retain solid contaminants such as plastic bottles among other objects,” said Neil Docherty, Sarens Key Account Manager. “Once in the tanks, the water is gradually conveyed to the purification stations, avoiding not only contamination of the rivers,

but also preventing possible flooding and environmental damage. This is why this project is also an important milestone for Sarens in its commitment to sustainability.”

The works were carried out by a team specially selected by Sarens for the occasion, with an LTM 1070 crane and one operator. Since the system had significant new features that necessitated its installation whenever there were groundwater problems, the contractor wanted to rely on Sarens' expertise to perform the task as efficiently as possible.

"On this occasion, despite being a novel system, our team did not experience any operational setbacks. In fact, beyond that, we highlight the speed with which our team unloaded and placed the material, something that was of great relief to the community

by not having to worry about the possible flooding that could be caused by the next storm,” Docherty said.

Sarens has extensive experience in the Canadian construction industry as well as other similar complex projects.

The company was recently able to work on the renovation of Union Station, where its engineering team worked on the lifting and subsequent installation of several iron girders, weighing about 9.4 tons, for the flying garden that connects the station's north and south towers. In addition, other projects, such as the refurbishment of the Lafarge cement factory in Bath, Ontario, have contributed to increasing annual cement production and boosted the country's construction sector, attesting to Sarens' expertise within the industry.

Liebherr’s new 31 XXT truck mounted concrete excels on small jobsites Following extensive testing, Liebherr has introduced the 31 XXT truck mounted concrete pump, the smallest pump type in its 30-metre series.

The 31 XXT is designed to include a compact five-part distribution boom that delivers a low unfolding height of 5.4 metres. This means the pump provides maximum flexibility on smaller and cramped construction sites. The strength of the boom concept is particularly beneficial when working indoors.

The new LiDriveIn function is a highlight of the new truck mounted pump when working in construction sites with low ceiling heights. Thanks to LiDriveIn, the 31 XXT can enter a building in standard operation with the arm package folded in front of the driver’s cab.

To bring the arm package folded forward, it is not necessary to swing out the outrigger legs. Instead, only the cylinders must be moved downwards. The machine operator lifts the cylinders again and can enter the hall with the arm package in front of the driver's cab.

Now, suppor t can be provided as desired, in full, partial or single-sided support.

In the hall, the concrete pump boom can be easily unfolded in front of the driver’s cab thanks to the short arm segments and the low unfolding height.

This way, the last centimetres can be saved. For load reasons, the LiDriveIn function is only quoted in combination with a fouraxle chassis.

CGA’s DIRT report reveals increase in utility strikes The Common Ground Alliance’s (CGA) 2022 Damage Information Reporting Tool (DIRT) report has revealed increases across key damage indicators.

The report found that damages to underground utilities, which pose severe risks to public safety and interrupt commerce, have trended upward over the last three years.

The annual DIRT Report provides a comprehensive accounting and analysis of damages

to buried infrastructure in Canada and the United States to help stakeholders understand the current damage landscape and the factors contributing to underground facility damages.

As excavation activity continues to increase, the report underscores the importance of addressing the ongoing causes of damages to vital facilities to drive these damage numbers down.

veals that damages per construction spending increased 12.35 per cent and damages per 1,000 transmissions increased 9.34 per cent between 2021 and 2022.

A regression analysis of consistent 2020-22 data which considered additional variables including weather, population and infrastructure density further confirms that damages were at best flat and likely increasing.

The report analyzed all 2022 data submitted voluntarily to DIRT from across North America and contextualized the data as part of a threeyear trend analysis.

Persistent challenges The analysis of 2022 data indicates that a few persistent challenges are responsible for nearly 76 per cent of damages that occur, including no notification to the 811 centres; failure to pothole and/or maintain sufficient clearance; facilities not marked or marked inaccurately due to locator error; and other improper excavation practices.

No-notification damages make up more than 25 per cent of all damages, with 77 per cent of no-notification damages attributed to professional excavators. Focusing industry efforts and outreach on these top challenges is key to making measurable progress in reducing damage and near-miss incidents.

Recommendations The report urges stakeholders to commit to working within organizations and across stakeholder groups to generate new solutions to the persistent, systemic issues causing the most damage. Recommendations provided to address specific root cause groups included:

· No-notification: Focus excavator outreach

on behavioural change — namely consistent and effective use of 811 — and help restore excavator confidence in the system

through improved locating processes.

Excavation: Prioritize tolerance zone safety, address contracts to provide adequate compensation for potholing and provide excavators with access to map visualizations.

Locator error: Enhance facility maps to GIS-grade, address contract structures to emphasize timeliness and accuracy, and increase efficiency through effective use of the 811 system.

The report also provides recommendations to enhance reporting and analysis of damages to better understand and address trends, including the implementation of standardized data collection and the creation of damage prevention indices to gauge progress over time.

Stakeholders are also encouraged to participate in the Damage Prevention Institute's (DPI) accreditation and peer review processes to help develop the next generation of industry performance metrics.

“Earlier this year, we challenged the industry with the ambitious goal of reducing damages by 50 per cent over the next five years,” said CGA President and CEO Sarah Magruder Lyle. “The findings of the DIRT Report are critical to focusing the industry on key areas contributing to more than three-quarters of all damages to buried infrastructure. To make significant change and reverse damage rates, it’s critical that our industry rapidly adopts the recommendations outlined in this report to target the most persistent challenges.”

Trimble and Mincon partner on piling solution for the solar industry Trimble and Mincon have partnered to provide a machine control factory option for piling and drilling attachments used in solar installations.

As a result of the collaboration, Mincon drill mast attachments for skid steers and excavators now have an option for the installation of the Trimble Groundworks Machine Control System, which can reduce the cost and complexity of the installation for the contractor.

Mincon Solar Installation Drills and Pile Drivers are designed to pre-drill through rock, install ground screws and drive piles on solar construction projects. Trimble Groundworks is a purpose-built machine control solution that enables contractors to perform drilling and piling operations quickly, safely and accurately. Equipping Mincon solar drilling solutions with Trimble Groundworks technology provides stakeless navigation and positioning accuracy.

“Demand for solar is so high right now that engineering, procurement and construction companies urgently need more installation capacity to meet the industry’s growing needs,” said Elliott Duck, Vice President of Marketing for Integrated Systems at Mincon.

“By equipping Mincon Drill Mast Attachments with Trimble Groundworks machine control, a machine operator can both predrill and install solar foundations without the need for someone on the ground checking for accuracy.”

Trimble Groundworks is part of the Trimble Connected Site portfolio of solutions that provides workflow and process integration from the design phase through to the finished project.

The integration of Trimble Business Center Software design capabilities in the office, and Trimble Groundworks machine control in the field, can increase

the efficiency and productivity of drilling and piling operations.

Trimble WorksManager Software also enables the syncing of data from office to field, to reduce site visits and provide a single source of information.

JCB to open its second North American manufacturing facility JCB has announced a plan to build its second North American facility in San Antonio, Texas.

Construction of the 66,890 square metre factory is expected to begin in early 2024 on a 400-acre site. The new facility will create 1,500 new jobs throughout the next five years.

“The growth we’ve experienced in the past few years in North America has been extensive and demand for our products continues to grow,” said Richard FoxMarrs, President and CEO for JCB North America.

“The decision to expand our manufacturing footprint

will bring us even closer to our customers and will allow us to further capitalize on market opportunities in North America."

JCB has 22 factories worldwide, including 11 in the United Kingdom, and others in India, Brazil and China.

The new facility will manufacture machines largely for customers in North America, the world’s biggest market for construction equipment.

Zeal Motor introduces its full lineup of Fat Trucks Fat Truck manufacturer Zeal Motor has added five new models to its lineup of Fat Trucks.

The new models include the 8x8 Hauler, 8x8 Wagon, 2.4 Pickup, 2.8 Pickup and 2.8 Wagon. The new Fat Trucks were unveiled at The Utility Expo in Louisville, Kentucky, in September.

"Our vehicles display impressive capabilities with speeds of up to 25 miles per hour on land and 3 miles per hour on water,” said Amine Khimjee, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing at Zeal Motor. “Furthermore, they meet stringent safety

requirements, providing a remarkable advantage that only the Fat Truck can deliver. Even at maximum payload, their footprint remains five times less than that of a human walking."

The compact 2.4 Pickup is an amphibious vehicle, powered by a 3-cylinder Hatz 56 hp engine, with a 905 kg payload, featuring a pioneering design with one hydraulic motor per wheel.

“One of the big features, and we're the first manufacturer to do this, is each wheel has one hydraulic motor to drive the vehicle,” Khimjee said.

The 2.8 Wagon and Pickup represent the evolution of their predecessors, the 2.8C and 2.8P, delivering an 11 per cent power increase and more than 40 new and enhanced features thanks to a 74 hp Caterpillar C2.2 turbo diesel engine.

The updates also include an impact-resistant windshield for heightened safety, an upgraded ergonomic and quieter cab and the introduction of Power Take Off capabilities. “ S o, t h e p h i l o s o p h y around our product is something that is compact, and like a pickup, but where the pickup stops, we continue,” Khimjee said. “They're fully amphibious, they float. That means that you can walk across a lake, go through mud or snow, climb hills,

and go to places that a regular pickup truck will not be able to.”

The 8X8 models, powered by a 173 hp Cummins F3.8 Turbo diesel engine, are purpose-built to excel in demanding terrains, offering the capability to transport up to a 2,267 kg payload or accommodate a crew of up to 16 people.

Zeal Motors was created in 2018 to solve the problem of moving people and materials to hard-to-reach jobsites. The company, based in Cowansville, Quebec, now manufactures seven versions of the Fat Truck across its compact, full-size and 8x8 platforms, to provide solutions for powerline and pipeline work, mining exploration and first responders.

Vanair partners with Lincoln Electric to create Air N Arc 330 Diesel In its first collaboration with Lincoln Electric, Vanair has developed the Air N Arc 330 Diesel all-in-one Power System.

The machine includes a diverse range of functions, delivering 60 cfm of air power, 10,000 watts of AC electric power, a 330A, 12V/24V battery booster, 50A, 12V/24V/48V charger, and a Lincoln Electric 330 Amp DC multi-process arc welder featuring Chopper Technology.

"The Air N Arc 330 Diesel underscores our unwavering commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our customers," said Greg Kokot, President of Vanair.

The Air N Arc 330 Diesel includes a bolt-on-frame kit, incorporating fuel and a battery integral to the unit, attaching to the base of the machine. This also enables removal and installation on and off the vehicle, providing the option to leave the unit behind at the job site.

The Air N Arc also features streamlined access to all functions through a single control panel strategically

The EPEQ EPTO hydraulic system, powered by the Air N Arc 330 Diesel, offers a greener, quieter and more efficient means to run the hydraulics of a crane or boom truck with the truck turned off.

Perkins’ Project Coeus to develop a drop-in hybrid powertrain Perkins is collaborating with Equipmake and Loughborough University’s Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering School to develop and produce an advanced multi-fuel ‘drop-in’ hybrid integrated power unit.

The advanced integrated power units will help off-highway OEMs — both large scale and those with limited resources — offer alternative options to diesel.

The power unit will be able to directly replace its diesel equivalent in terms of power density and response, enabling a wide range of o f f- h ig hway i n d u s t r i a l OEMs, regardless of their size or the application they manufacture, to accelerate their transition to low-carbon or zero carbon fuels such as hydrogen, methanol, bioethanol and other eFuels and harness electrification.

The design will support several fuel types with the initial demonstration utilizing hydrogen.

“We are pleased to have secured this opportunity to accelerate the development of advanced off-highway

power system solutions,” said David Goldspink, Perkins Vice President and General Manager. “This project will explore, innovate and lead the way to solving some of the key challenges facing the off-highway industry’s energy transition and support the transition towards reduced carbon in this key sector.”

Backed by £11.14 million in funding from the UK government, Project Coeus will develop a 7-litre Perkins 1200 Series industrial power unit with hybrid-electric components and advanced controls to enable operation on hydrogen fuel.

The 45 to 250 kW hybrid powertrain system will be configured with factory-installed ECM sensors, radiators, cooling packs, filtration, control systems and aftertreatment hardware in a complete, integrated package that minimizes OEM development timelines and reduces engineering and assembly costs.

Launching this month, the three and a half-year project will be led by Perkins’ global engineering head-

quarters in Peterborough, UK, with Equipmake providing epowertrain technology and Loughborough University supporting through advanced engine analytics and emissions control.

Project Coeus will see the design, development and manufacture of a multi-fuel ‘drop-in’ hybrid powertrain, which directly replaces existing diesel solutions in off-highway machines and will support the UK and global off-highway industries to deliver reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Energy transition options In addition to the advanced hydrogen hybrid integrated power unit, Perkins is driving numerous initiatives to help customers manage the energy transition to a lower-carbon future.

These include 48-, 300- and 600-volt lithium-ion battery solutions with modular designs and factory-installed telematics that Perkins is developing to optimize performance and packaging in numerous next-generation off-highway applications.

As well, Perkins is devel-

oping a full range of engines that, without modification, can use a wide range of lower-carbon intensity drop-in fuels such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and biodiesel. It’s initiatives also include highly configurable integrated, end-to-end diesel-electric hybrid powertrains, suitable for a wide range of off-highway applications.

Volvo CE’s EC230 electric excavator matches performance with its diesel counterpart The creation of Volvo Construction Equipment’s EC230 electric excavator is the result of proven technology from across the Volvo Group.

The 23-tonne electric excavator delivers the same performance as its diesel counterpart, while eliminating emissions and greatly reducing noise, vibration and total cost of ownership.

The machine combines Volvo CE’s experience in excavator development with Volvo Penta’s R&D into electric motors and battery systems that has already been proven by Volvo Buses and Mack Trucks.

Sung Sook Kim, Volvo CE’s Product Manager for mid-sized excavators, explained the ability to share technology within the group has allowed Volvo to take its electric equipment development beyond compact machinery, without relying on major components from third-party manufacturers.

“We designed it, we built it, we manufactured it. So that's the big difference. This is a mass production machine,” Kim said.

With the battery already in use in trucks, Volvo CE can learn from their experience as well as address safety and durability concerns of battery technology.

“With Mack Trucks, they have been using it two or

three years ahead of us,” said Najing Li, Volvo CE’s product manager for sustainable power.

“It already has the validation. I think that’s the benefit, the beauty of it.”

Electric performance The EC230 is powered by four of Volvo Penta’s lithium-ion flat pack batteries for a capacity of 264 kWh. With a system voltage of 600 volts, the electric motor delivers a peak 160 kW of power.

“Trucks have been using that (flat pack battery) for probably three or four years, and it had been developed long before that,” said Forrest Hooper, Volvo Penta’s REgional Sales Manager. “We have the flexibility to be able to kind of cherry pick and tap into the Volvo Group technology.”

The electric excavator features a 1.44 cubic metre bucket capacity, a lifting capacity of 7,560 kg, a 6.7-metre maximum digging depth and a breakout force of 33,500 foot-pounds.

The hydraulics system features two main variable displacement axial piston pumps that each provide 208 litres per minute. Combined with the electronic control system and ECO mode, the hydraulic system is optimized to work in harmony with the power source to reduce power loss and improve

Caterpillar unveils its first next gen compact track loaders Building on the success of its D3 series compact track loaders, Caterpillar has introduced the first next generation Cat 255 and 265 CTLs. A ground up redesign from the previous series, the 255 and 265 include improved engine, lift and tilt performance, stability, operator comfort and technology.

“We kept the DNA of the D3 series while reimagining the possibilities of loader performance using voice of customer feedback to lead the way,” said Trevor Chase, Product Application Specialist for Caterpillar.

“Both next generation models leverage the many benefits offered by the vertical lift design. The new Cat 255 replaces the 259D3, while the 265 replaces both the 279D3 and 289D3 machines.”

Simplified nomenclature All Caterpillar next generation compact track loaders are identified by the ending model number 5. The simplified nomenclature uses the middle number to represent machine size with larger numbers designating larger machines.

New CTL engine The 255 and 265 compact track loaders are powered by the 74.3 hp Cat C2.8T and Cat C2.8TA engines.

The new engines maintain horsepower across a wider rpm range and boast significant torque increases of 13 per cent for the 255 and 43 per cent for the 265.

A redesigned engine compartment mounts the engine and cooling package lower into the frame for improved stability.

Compared to the 259D3,

the 255 loader delivers 36 per cent more tilt breakout, 26 per cent higher lift breakout force and a 24 per cent increase in rated operating capacity (ROC).

Height to the B-pin for the 265, compared to the 289D3, increases by 193 mm, resulting in a maximum lift height of 3.35 metres.

The 265 compact track loader also delivers 19 per cent higher tilt breakout force and 22 per cent higher lift breakout force.

Standard hydraulic system pressure is increased to 3,500 psi.

The next generation machines now include a closed-centre auxiliary hydraulic system to operate all Cat Smart Attachments, including the Cat Smart Dozer Blade, with the standard auxiliary hydraulics provided.

Standard and high flow For machines equipped with standard flow, both models are shipped from the factory outfitted as high flow ready. High flow functionality is easily activated via a new software enabled attachment (SEA), permitting on-machine or remote activation of increased hydraulic flow to 113 litres per minute at the standard system pressure.

The high flow XPS factory option increases auxiliary hydraulic system pressure to 4,061 psi for both models, while also increasing the hydraulic flow to 113 litres per minute for the 255 and 129 litres per minute for the 265. Equipped with the High Flow XPS option, the 255 delivers auxiliary hydraulic performance not before available in a midsize chassis machine.

By reengineering lower machine components, the CTLs feature a stronger and stiffer undercarriage for improved stability and less pitching when filling the bucket with material.

The torsion suspension undercarriage delivers better operator comfort, track wear and material retention, plus the stiffer design results in smoother graded surfaces. The 255 loader offers a new 32-cm bar-tread narrow track option.

New cab features Both Caterpillar compact track loaders feature a larger cab design with 22 per cent more overall volume and 26 per cent more foot space. With a 7-cm increase in interior width, the cab expands footwell-to-ceiling height by 46 mm and allows for an additional 40 cm of hip room and 28 mm more width between the joysticks for improved operator comfort.

A range of new mechanical and air-ride suspension seat options are available for the 255 and 265 CTLs, including a high-comfort seat that is ventilated and heated. New auto temperature control plus vent outlet positioning above the operator helps the new HVAC system to quickly cool the cab’s interior.

Next generation loaders are equipped with either a 127-mm standard LCD monitor or a 203-mm advanced touchscreen monitor, depending on the technology package selected.

Like the D3 series’ advanced display, the standard monitor features Bluetooth and supports functionality for a rearview camera feed, creep, job clock and maintenance reminders.

The advanced touchscreen monitor provides a high level of control, delivering advanced radio control, and supports the multi-camera

270-degree option and 32 language options.

As well, the advanced joysticks provide integrated control of the advanced touchscreen monitor so all machine function control and adjustments can be made without the operator removing their hands from the controls.

Featuring a low entry point, entering and exiting the 255 and 265 loaders is much easier. The redesign allows the operator to open the cab door without the lift arms being fully lowered to the frame stops. A simplified two-step door removal process allows operators to quickly remove it without tools.

Visibility from the cab is improved via the lower engine mounting, a 59 per cent larger rear window and bigger top window that provides a 15 per cent increase in viewable area.

Caterpillar tech The new Caterpillar compact track loaders deliver the next level of integrating machines with technology. Both standard and advanced monitors offer the ability to run Cat Smart Attachments, such as the dozer and grader blades and backhoe. These attachments are tied into the joysticks, and the machine automatically recognizes the type of attachment and the required joystick pattern for controlling it.

The available Cat Product Link Elite system tracks machine hours, location, asset utilization, provides fault code details and delivers advanced monitoring and machine health, that is remotely accessible via VisionLink.

As well, Product Link Elite provides remote flash and troubleshooting capabilities and quickly enables the remote activation of the SEA High Flow feature.

After rebranding from Terex Trucks, Rokbak is celebrating a successful reintroduction of its articulated haulers.

In 2021, the articulated dump truck manufacturer introduced its new name and colour, seven years after the company was acquired by Volvo.

The relaunch was kicked off with the introduction of the 28-tonne payload RA30 and 38-tonne payload RA40 haulers — the most productive and efficient articulated haulers the company has ever produced.

The Rokbak name also marked the first time a company acquired by Volvo would be relaunched under a completely new brand name.

“It was a massive risk, but it was a success,” said Jacqueline Reid, Rokbak’s Global Marketing, Communications and Product Management Director.

In October, the manufacturer invited media to its headquarters in Motherwell, Scotland, to reflect on the transformation as well as outline the company’s future products.

Since the rebrand, Rokbak has recorded a 55 per cent increase in global sales, a 13.2 per cent increase in North American sales and a 10 per cent increase in new dealers.

“We had a queue of dealers waiting to carry our brand,” said Guy Wilson, Rokbak’s Global Sales Director.

In fact, sales have outpaced the Motherwell factory’s ability to produce machines.

Facing a labour shortage, Rokbak has been actively recruiting more staff to its factory floor to reach its production capacity.

“We’re up to speed now, but over the last couple of years we could have sold more,” Wilson said. “We've got an order backlog going well into next year. There are machines out in the yard, but virtually every single one of them has a name on it. So effectively, we do not have stock here.

It's literally off the line and then gone.”

Rokbak in Canada North America represents 50 per cent of the articulated truck market. In Canada, Rokbak has partnered with several dealers in the west, and is now looking to fill gaps in Ontario and Quebec.

“To be honest, we should be doing better in Canada than we are,” Wilson said. “The dealers we have are starting to engage. I think they’re starting to come to us. They're starting to appreciate the brand.”

In North America the trucks are in use on aggregate and construction sites as well as in the Canadian oil fields. So far, the RA30 is proving to be the more popular option for Rokbak customers.

“One of the reasons is there's a lot of RA30s that go into rental fleets,” Wilson said.

Next gen art trucks Rokbak is now working on its first major updates to the RA30 and RA40 since the trucks’ launch, which includes a new cab and new electrical architecture.

“We're always striving to improve the machines. We gather customer feedback, and we'll see where we can fit that into current product improvements,” said Rokbak Product Manager Charlie Urquhart. “We're constantly talking to the customer, either when they come here, or on their sites.”

In the cab, the next generation trucks will include a new, simple-to-use control layout and human-machine interface, as well as improved ergonomics, more storage, optional integrated systems and easier access to service components.

“So, there's a lot more space in the cab than there was before. And there's a nice big new instrument panel in the centre and a lovely digital dash. It's a really good piece of kit,” Urquhart said.

The new electrical system includes additional controllers, new proven switchgears and improved durability.

“We can offer flexibility and growth for customer adaptations because we've got this new architecture,” Urquhart said. “But the most important thing about having this new architecture is it's a platform for future

driveline technologies and mobility that gives us that stepping stone towards that.”

The updates also improve upon diagnostics and machine connectivity as Rokbak will be able to perform over the air software updates.

“That gives us two advantages. One is reduced downtime, as the truck spends less time sitting there waiting for someone to turn on the laptop,” Urquhart said. “The second thing is sustainability. Instead of having someone drive X number of hours to go and do this job, we can do from the office.”

The cab and electrical system updates are currently being tested on a prototype truck.

“We want to make sure that it is right for the market.

So, there will be some prototypes going out before we actually go into production,” said Scott Pollock, Rokbak’s Senior Product Manager.

The manufacturer is also working on a new Rokbak platform that will replace the existing RA30 and RA40 models. Rokbak is working with the Volvo technology team to create the new platform that will feature a scalable design and common platform architecture.

While the next generation articulated dump truck design will be powered by a diesel engine, the new design will prepare Rokbak to

incorporate future power source options.

“We've got to focus on performance, productivity and uptime, sustainability, TCO

and connectivity,” Urquhart said.

“Our key product themes are directly feeding into this new platform.”

LOOKING BACK AT AGGREGATE

Pictured here in 1948 is a stationary aggregate plant operated by Telephone City Gravel Supply Ltd. in Brantford, Ontario.

Started a few years earlier by local contractor Johnson Bros., the pit featured an excellent gravel deposit. This pit was surfaced mined for more than 70 years, providing aggregate to large projects such as the power plants at Niagara Falls and several major highways.

Much of the aggregate was initially shipped by rail since a spur line ran right through the pit.

This excerpt from a 1980 Brant News article describes how this plant came about: “The crushing plant was designed and built

by C.J. Rooney, General Superintendent, at Johnson Bros. Finding the dealer price to be exorbitant they commissioned Rooney to build one for them. He constructed a well built, thoroughly efficient plant in production through the mid-1970s.”

The post-war years were tough to find, let alone, buy heavy equipment. Contractors bought war surplus trucks and equipment

to augment their fleets. The tandem dump truck seen in front of the aggregate plant was one of those surplus chassis. Johnson Bros. had to fabricate a dump box in their shop due to scarce, used steel post-war.

The pit was recently rehabilitated for expansion of Brant County industrial land.

However, current aggregate producers near Paris and Cambridge, Ontario are still working the Grand River Glacier deposit turning pit-run gravel into high quality aggregate in 2023!

Metso plans to unveil the first products in its new diesel-electric range of Lokotrack crushers and screens in spring 2024.

The new track-mounted Lokotrack EC range is designed and built on a unique new platform that Metso has been developing since 2020.

The Lokotrack EC units feature a next-generation

diesel-electric powerline.

All process functions are electrically driven and controlled by automation to always perform at the optimal load level. The new Lokotrack will have a distinctive design and it will feature the latest digital tools, improving operation and maintainance.

Metso has also reduced hydraulic oil volume in the machines by 90 per cent compared to the industry average.

During operation, the complete process can be remotely controlled with cameras via a mobile interface. Advanced process control system with frequency converters help achieve the superior product throughput and qualit y from the latest crushing and screening technologies. A modular design enables upgradable solutions, smaller parts inventory and better uptime.

The new Lokotrack EC line will be unveiled in Finland in May 2024 at Lokolaunch. The invitation-only

Terex MPS debuts new Simplicity MHS620X screen module Terex MPS is expanding its Simplicity modular plant line up with the introduction of the MHS620X modular screen.

SBM’s JawMax 400 and 450: economical performance in the 40 tonne class Designed for flexible applications in raw materials and recycling, SMB’s JawMax 400 and 450 track-mounted jaw crushers deliver a combination of mobility and economical production capacities of up to 450 tonnes per hour.

For many years, 40-ton crushers were considered the reference class in track-mounted crushing, and not only in transport-sensitive Europe.

Only with the emergence of compact crushers, and the introduction of increasingly powerful but heavier mobile plants that the innovation push in the popular "40 tonners" came to a halt.

SBM Mineral Processing recognized the gap, which opened for recycling companies with production requirements beyond 300 tonnes per hour or for processing specialists looking for economical crushing solutions.

The JawMax 400/450 series jaw crusher, developed for mobile use, is integrated into a transport-optimized plant design. Both crushers include SBM’s diesel-electric drive and several intelligent control features such as the automatic overload protection or Crush Control and an active double-deck primary screen.

SBM remained true to its hybrid concept in

the new development of the 40-ton models.

Both plants feature a diesel-electric drive consisting of 6.7-litre Cummins diesel and a 200-kVa on board generator that supplies all electric auxiliary drives.

A 110-kW electric motor drives the STE 11070 jaw crusher via a V-belt. One of the largest crushers in the 40-ton class, the unit offers a jaw width of 110 cm x 70 cm. The nominal feed material size of 0 to 70 cm allows for a wide range of applications.

An advantage of the SBM hybrid concept is significantly smaller hydraulic systems. The cable connections to the 20 electric auxiliary drives are break-proof and insensitive to temperature.

For maintenance, large flaps provide free access to the drive units, electrical and control components, which are well protected against dust, making maintenance work easier and troubleshooting simple and safe. For example, the crusher main discharge conveyor can be hydraulically lowered by about 50 cm, completely exposing the crusher discharge zone.

As standard, SBM offers a radio remote control, which gives the machine operator full control over the system.

In 1893, the Bucyrus Steam Shovel and Dredge Company opened a new manufacturing facility in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to improve and expand its production facilities.

Since this point in history, the management decisions and equipment produced in South Milwaukee have not only changed the construction and mining industries but also the course of history.

In the early 1900s, Bucyrus-produced equipment was a major contributor to the monumental excavation projects of the time.

“Dredges were used as part of the California gold rush, and shovels were a part of the vast Mesabi Iron Ranges,” said Shawn Paap, commercial manager for Cat Electric Rope Shovels (ERS). “The New York State barge canal enlargement project, the largest U.S. earthmoving project between 1902 to 1912, also used Bucyrus dredges.”

The company’s 40- to 50-ton steam-powered shovels played a significant role in building the Panama Canal, one of the most exciting projects in human history. Over the course of the project, 77 shovels produced in South Milwaukee were used to construct the canal.

When combined with the shovels produced by Marion Steam Shovel Company, a Bucyrus heritage company, 101 of the

102 shovels used in the project were from Bucyrus.

The Second World War recorded unprecedented demand for excavators in Europe, and virtually 100 per cent of the company’s entire output from 1942 to 1945 was devoted to the war effort. Post-war, the company embarked on a $2 million project to increase plant capacity by 20 per cent. By the middle of the 20th century, Bucyrus was a global company with an expanded product offering, and more than 74,000 Bucyrus machines had been produced and used in more than 166 countries.

The heritage of today’s Cat 7495 and 7495HF models used for the mining industry began as railroad shovels. Between 1882 and 1930, more than 1,850 railroad shovels were produced. Those first models weren’t mobile

by today’s standards, being pushed on rails or rollers. This manual process to move the massive machines didn’t meet the efficiency needs of mining.

A series of early innovations originating from the South Milwaukee facility helped to improve rope shovel efficiency and durability.

Borrowing Caterpillar’s technology of the 1920s, the steam-powered shovels adopted track-style rotating belts to significantly increase mobility. Before the 1930s, the entire rope shovel structure was riveted, but those rivets were replaced by welds to improve durability.

Sandvik begins trials of its largest BEV underground mining truck Sandvik has partnered with mine owner AngloGold Ashanti to hold the first trials of its electric TH665B underground mining truck.

The 65 tonne prototype truck is being tested by hard rock underground contract miner Barminco at AngloGold Ashanti’s Sunrise Dam in western Australia.

As well as producing zero diesel emissions underground and generating 80 per cent less heat, the Sandvik TH665B is expected to be up to 25 per cent faster on a 1:7 ramp than regular diesel trucks.

Darren Kwok, Head of Electrification and Technology for Barminco’s parent company Perenti, said he is excited to see just what the new Sandvik BEV can achieve.

“As a business, we are focused on how we can support our clients to decarbonize their mines and trialling equipment to support this is a critical part of our strategy,” he said. “Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) not only have the potential to lower carbon emissions, they can also improve the underground environment for mine workers and boost the efficiency of operations. With the longer haul ramps and the harsh Australian operating conditions, it will be put to the test.

The mining industry got its first glimpse of the Sandvik TH665B when it made its debut at the World Mining Congress in Brisbane, Australia, earlier this year.

Developed on the back of more than 40 years of electrification experience, the machine uses lithium-iron phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFP) battery technology. The electric driveline delivers 858 hp of continuous power, allowing for high acceleration and shorter cycle times.

Sandvik will have four technicians on site who will support the machine throughout the trial, as well as provide operator and maintenance training to the teams on site.

In September, SMS Equipment, Fort McMurray 468 First Nation and Suncor unveiled two Komatsu 980-5 mining trucks, featuring artwork by a local First Nations artist. The trucks will join a Komatsu fleet in the field at Suncor’s Base Plant in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

The 980-5 mining trucks feature a gross vehicle weight of 627,999 kg, a 3,500 hp Tier 4 Final Cummins engine and a 363-tonne payload.

“The trucks serve as an ongoing reminder to employees and partners in the mining community of the importance of Truth and Reconciliation in our daily lives,” said Kelly-Ann Cordner, Executive Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Human Resources Officer at SMS Equipment.

“While Canadians recognize a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in September, the commitment we need to take as individuals and as companies is longterm. Building awareness

and encouraging conversations is one small way we can keep this important topic in the spotlight.”

The trucks’ artwork follows a theme of Every Child Matters, which honours those directly and indirectly affected by the legacy of Canada’s residential schools.

One mural features Indigenous youth, in reference to innocent lives lost and those who survived. The second mural includes youth and an adult, in reference to the intergenerational impact of residential schools.

“Truth and Reconciliation means acknowledging the painful past, healing the wounds, restoring our cultural heritage, seeking justice, and building a more inclusive and equitable future for all Indigenous peoples.

It is a transformative journey towards reconciliation, understanding and empowerment,” said Councillor Samantha Whalen, Fort McMurray 468 First Nation.

The Every Child Matters themed trucks are not the first time SMS Equipment has incorporated an awareness campaign into its machines.

branch previously partnered with one of its mining customers to raise awareness of breast cancer and prostate cancer with pink and blue painted dump truck bodies.

“The response was resoundingly positive. When a new shipment of Komatsu 980-5s was due to arrive at the same shop, the team was inspired to use the powerful equipment to make a powerful statement,” Cordner said.

“We partnered with the Fort McMurray 468 First Nation and Suncor to devise a plan that went beyond orange paint and included the Every Child Matters messaging and artwork designed by a local First Nations artist. We all agreed the message needed to be clear and impactful.”

SMS Equipment has identified the opportunity to continuously improve and begin taking steps to spread greater awareness to its employees and customers. As well, SMS Equipment contributes to economic sustainability of Indigenous communities within its region.

“There is a lot of work still to do and we are excited for the path ahead,” Cordner said.

Continued from Page B11 - CAT CELEBRATES 130 YEARS Caterpillar introduced a liquid cooled motion regulator cabinet shortly after the acquisition to more efficiently dissipate the heat generated by electrical components. This enabled the global product to reliably operate in extreme temperatures ranging from -40C to 50C and at altitudes reaching 5,250 metres without derating. The company also introduced a faster propel transfer switch to cut lag time by 70 per cent, improving productivity.

After intensely studying the habits of operators with varying skill levels, Caterpillar introduced Operator

Assist – Enhanced Motion Control (EMC), its first technology advancement package for the Cat 7495 series shovels in 2016. The innovation delivered machine protection and simplified operation to boost longevity and improve productivity.

Protecting the dipper, the software automatically limited swing forces when the operator attempted to swing the dipper through the bank. It also safeguarded the crowd ropes and brake, and it prevented boom jacking situations to improve machine cycle times and productivity.

Today, more ERS technologies to improve efficiency and lower costs are being i n t ro d u c e d a t a f a s t e r pace. This year, Caterpillar launched two new technology packages for ERS models – the Integrated Technology Package (ITP) and Operator Assist Package (OA).

Eliminating the need for additional in-cab displays from one-off tech packages, ITP and its modules serve as the foundation for launching current and future technologies. It also provides seamless integration and quicker installation of Cat MineStar Solutions’ operational technologies that help to track, monitor and manage the shovel.

OA offers more advanced machine protection and operating simplicity. It features a LiDAR vision system — similar to the technology found on autonomous mining trucks — to scan the

front of the shovel, helping to avoid accidental collisions between the dipper and machine.

Cat ERS models Since the acquisition, Caterpillar has produced more than 200 of the 120tonne capacity ERS models in South Milwaukee, initially under the Bucyrus name and now as Caterpillar. The average lifespan of today’s Cat 7495 shovel is 20 years with machines working in some of the harshest operating conditions around the world, from the oil sands of Canada to the arid Chilean deserts where average annual rainfall is less than 24.5 mm.

From 1990 to 2022, roughly 237 machines – both Bucyrus 495 and Cat 7495 series – have moved more than 105 billion tonnes of material. If this quantity were moved by the 364-tonne Cat 797 mining truck, it would have resulted in 290.1 million truckloads and have taken over 13.9 million hours to complete, given a 2.88-minute cycle and truck spotting time.

Wimmer Introduces the new YellowFOX tunnel excavator Built on a custom Liebherr platform, Wimmer Hartstahl has developed the YellowFOX, a new tunnel excavator.

The new machine joins the existing Blue Badger, eBadger and miniBadger lineup, all of which have been designed specifically for smaller tunnel cross-sections.

The YellowFOX is capable of working at heights from 4.2 metres. It is built on a specially made Liebherr platform that features a Liebherr 914 Compact Litronic superstructure and a Lieb-

herr 920 Compact Litronic undercarriage. This is not a standard platform, but a custom version exclusively designed for Wimmer. The excavator boom, like the Badger family, is also custom-made by Wimmer.

Epiroc has released a new generation SmartROC C50 Epiroc has created a new generation of its SmartROC C50 that includes a new, smart graphical interface and improved fuel efficiency.

According to Epiroc, the SmartROC C50 is one of the fastest, safest and most efficient drill rigs available on the market. The popular surface drill rig delivers power and precision due to the COPROD technology, which offers a combination of precision and optimal blasting results.

the operator with troubleshooting, by showing exactly where a problem is located so that downtime is kept to a minimum. The smart technology also boosts productivity thanks to more precise drilling and consistenc y in operations.

Caterpillar appoints Chief Operating Officer Caterpillar has appointed Joseph E. Creed to the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer.

Creed is currently Group President of Energy and Transportation at Caterpillar. He begins his new role on Nov. 1, reporting to Jim Umpleby, chairman and chief executive officer.

"Joe's extensive financial experience across Caterpillar's engine and machine businesses, combined with his leadership of our Energy and Transportation segment, position him well for his new role," Umpleby said. "Joe will help lead the continued execution of our strategy for profitable growth and pursue the market opportunities associated with the

Creed joined Caterpillar in 1997 and has held numerous positions of increased responsibility across multiple divisions of the company.

He was promoted to Chief Financial Officer for Caterpillar's Energy and Transportation business segment in 2013, then to Vice President of Caterpillar's Finance Services Division in 2017.

Creed also served as interim Chief Financial Officer in 2018. He then became Vice President of the Oil & Gas and Marine Division and the Electric Power Division.

In 2021, he was promoted to Group President of Energy & Transportation.

Creed graduated from Western

Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He completed Caterpillar's flagship executive leadership program conducted by Stanford University specifically for Caterpillar leaders, dealers and suppliers. He is a certified public accountant.

Creed serves on the Western Illinois University President's National Advisory Council, is an executive board member of the Caterpillar Foundation and is the executive sponsor of the Caterpillar Employee Resource Group known as ADEPT (Abled and Disabled Employees Partnering Together). He is also a member of the board and past Chairman for Easterseals of Central Illinois.
