LETTER
FROM THE EDITOR
Gamification could be key to construction recruitment
This summer I had the humbling experience of playing Xbox with my nephews.
While in my younger days I considered myself ThreeStar General material in the world of Call of Duty, these kids absolutely smoked me.
My excuse is that the current generation of teenagers have had uninterrupted access to the Internet, and connected gaming opportunities, their entire lives.
As much as I’d like to think my nephews spend too much time practicing, almost all teens play video games.
In fact, the Pew Research Centre found that 97 per cent of youth ages 12 to 17 play computer, web, portable or console games.
And it’s not irregular play.
When asked, half of all teens played video games “yesterday.”
Gaming is also an activity that nearly reaches gender
parity, with 99 per cent of boys playing games compared to 94 per cent of girls.
I know (firsthand) that many parents see video games as a waste of time, but gaming is building important skill sets, like eye-hand coordination, problem solving, teamwork, strategizing and improving response times. And those skills are transferable.
A relatively new initiative in Ontario will connect those skills to heavy equipment operation. The province recently announced it is building three Trades & Tech Trucks that will travel across Ontario to teach students about the skilled trades.
The mobile classrooms, operated by Skills Ontario, are equipped with simulators to introduce youth to numerous trades, from crane operation to welding to heavy equipment.
“Since rolling out our first Trades & Tech Truck last year, our mobile classroom has provided thousands of students with hands-on learning experiences,” said Ian Howcroft, CEO of Skills Ontario.
“This program ignites an awareness of opportunities in the skilled trades and tech field that inspires more young people to pursue these careers.”
The Trades & Tech Truck pilot program launched in 2022.
The first truck reached more than 40,000 students visiting more than 50 events from Toronto to Ottawa to Thunder Bay.
Over three years, the new trucks will introduce 500,000 students to the skilled trades to tackle the labour shortage.
If you've attended a recent industry trade show, you have had the opportunity
Bill Tremblay // Editor editor@equipmentjournal.com
to see how heavy equipment simulators bring an element of gamification to operating machinery.
Connecting the trades to an activity enjoyed by nearly 100 per cent of today’s youth has the potential to make meaningful gains in recruitment.
They may even see it as a career they’ve been training for their entire life.

John Deere Electric Powertrain to build new battery plant in North Carolina
John Deere Electric Powertrain is investing $69 million for its North American headquarters and a new battery and charger manufacturing facility in Kernersville, North Carolina.
At the new facility, John Deere will produce Kreisel battery packs for high performance and large, off-highway equipment applications. Deere acquired a majority ownership share of the Austrian-based Kreisel in 2022.
“North Carolina’s leadership in manufacturing, innovation and clean transportation is creating great jobs from global manufacturers like this. With our shared values on sustainability, we look forward to creating a cleaner future together," said North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper. The factory will also manufacture Chimero charger technology for e-mobility, stationary sys -
tems and Level 3 charging solutions.
The new venture will build a state-of-the-art facility with sustainable energy features in a 10,684 square metre space to expand the manufacturing of Kreisel batteries and chargers in the North American market.
“As the demand for electric solutions continues to increase, this strategic investment in growing our production capacity will help
strengthen our position as an international battery technology leader,” said Pierre Guyot, Senior Vice President of John Deere Power Systems and Chairman of Kreisel Electric.
“Within the evolving off-highway equipment market, we are prioritizing the development of a robust charging ecosystem and battery portfolio that can support and sustain the long-term adoption of electrification across a wide variety of applications.” A performance-based
grant of $100,000 from the One North Carolina Fund will help with John Deere Electric Powertrain’s location in North Carolina.
The One NC Fund provides financial assistance to local governments to help attract economic investment and create jobs.
“This is outstanding news for our region,” said N.C. Representative Donny Lambeth. “We appreciate John Deere’s vote of confidence in our people for this new venture and the work of the economic developers and

Skyjack is launching a new range of DC electric scissor lifts that feature AC brushless electric drive motors and other significant design changes to boost runtime.
The electric range will replace the current hydraulic drive models and will be available in all regions throughout 2024.
“This is an exciting time. Rolling out our new E-Drive across our eight-model DC scissor range takes time. I think it is worthy to note that we have been able to achieve that without real term increase in cost,” said Skyjack President Ken McDougall. “By providing
significant reductions in our customers’ cost of ownership, we have a truly competitive offering that more than lives up to the Skyjack ‘simply reliable’ ethos. With our new E-Drive machines we will see our customers getting more done for less.”
The drive system provides exceptional duty cycles and fully proportional controls, which offer an improved drive experience.
The new scissor lift range delivers improved efficiency, controllability and torque. This means that productivity is boosted with an improvement of up to 20 per cent in runtime per charge. E-Drive provides consistent power, traction and torque, with more than 25 per cent gradeability, so that climbing loading ramps is easy.
During development of the new E-Drive DC scissor lifts, Skyjack focused on increasing operational uptime. This has resulted in a range that reduces cost of ownership, improves resale value and delivers a higher return on investment.
“A longer run time per charge and fewer lifetime charge cycles mean our customers will find they spend less on batteries over the life of the machine and that is just one of many benefits,” said Corey Connolly, Senior Product Manager at Skyjack.
To achieve the improvements, all major service points are easily accessible, enabling straightforward troubleshooting and repair.
The sealed drive motor is maintenance free. The motor’s improved efficiency reduces charge time and power consumption, which saves costs and reduces battery maintenance. The drive motors have no oil leakage potential, and an optimized hydraulic lift and steer manifold reduces hydraulic connections by 70 per cent. An optional leak containment system (ECOTRAY) provides further peace of mind.
“Ever since we launched E-Drive on our vertical mast range we have been excited about this launch. Our new vertical masts were very well received and now, after more than two years in the market, we see E-Drive as a proven winner, and I am sure our customers will welcome this change on our core scissor range,” Connolly said.
The new models will feature a new designation carrying “E” to signify E-Drive, for example “SJ3219 E.” In addition, the new range will carry Skyjack’s ECO mark as rental companies and major contractors face increasing demands for sustainability information. Skyjack has introduced its ECO mark to support its customers by providing products that deliver benefits in environmental performance and long-term sustainability.
Diagnostic display
With E-Drive, Skyjack has also introduced a new CAN bus-based operating system. While Skyjack’s standard colour-coded and numbered wiring remains, it now combines with an externally visible diagnostic system display. This means plug-in tools are not necessary for day-to-day troubleshooting. With the diagnostic display outboard facing, the system can be accessed without the need to open service trays. It provides real-time data and easy to understand machine faults, written in plain and simple language.
In addition, the new models see a revised emergency lowering location. A single location, single step, valve actuated emergency lowering toggle switch is integrated on the outside rear of the machine with the other base controls.
While the new E-Drive range offers many new features, there are Skyjack features that remain, including:
· Skyjack’s unique scissor stack design with symmetrical load distribution and cross member bracing
· The removable, high strength and impact resistant composite upper control box with integrated shroud
· ElevateLive QR code label on each machine provides operators access to critical machine information
Following Skyjack’s recently publicized global capacity expansion, the new range will be available through a phased introduction by region, starting with the smaller SJ3215 E and SJ3219 E models followed through to the first quarter of 2024 with the remaining machines in the range. The E-Drive models will be available in all regions throughout 2024.

Tony Nuziale, has been working as a superintendent, for the past 6 years and Adam Tyson, for the past 11 years as a foreman for the Municipality of Killarney, Ontario. Killarney situated on the North Channel on beautiful pink granite rock, is the oldest community on the north shore of Georgian Bay by George Island, with a yearround population of less than 500, but over 100,000 visitors/tourists a year. Tony was given the task to look for a new machine from different dealers/manufacturers in the area. The applications that the machine would be used for would be posthole digging, a lot of ditch-digging, brush cutting, loading trucks, digging graves and cleanup at three landfill sites they operate.
“From the minute I went to McDowell B Equipment Ltd. we noticed everything moved seamlessly there. They made it really easy for me to check out all our options. They even had an auger ready for me to try on the Bobcat® E42 compact excavator. I was impressed by how powerful the machine was and had a lift capacity of 3000 lbs. The location of the hoses, etc. makes it much simpler for our operators to know what’s wrong (you don’t need to be a mechanic). Bobcat has truly thought of everything. We have extra peace

of mind because it comes with a great warranty and McDowell B Equipment is conveniently located in Sudbury for service and parts. Nick Morin, sales specialist for Bobcat at McDowell B Equipment has been really great to work with. He has been very informative, really knows his stuff and has always been easy to get a hold of. He showed us how we get a municipality discount through Canoe Procurement Group of Canada purchasing a Bobcat machine.” Tony also felt it was important to have the opinion of their operators when looking at machines as they are operating them for long hours a day. After Adam checked out the machine and gave it his thumbs up, Tony pitched it to the council as the pricing was within their budget, and other dealers/manufacturers were unwilling to negotiate. ‘Besides, McDowell/ Bobcat has all the attachments we could possibly need as well,” stated Tony.
When Adam was asked what he likes about the Bobcat E42 compact excavator his reply was, “it is by far the best machine we’ve ever gotten, and all the attachments are incredible! It has also taken over 90% of our manual labour. It takes us longer to load the truck than it does to do the work now, Adam jokes. It fits on our trailer, and
we don’t need a DZ license to pull it. Even better, we no longer have to subcontract work out which is a huge savour in our municipality budget. I put 50 hours on that machine in the first two weeks! I am not computer savvy, but the touchscreen display is easy to navigate and operate, the stereo is awesome along with the comfort of the cab, my back thanks you Nick and Bobcat.”
“We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend McDowell B Equipment to purchase Bobcat equipment and attachments for your next purchase,” stated both Tony and Adam. Thanks Tony and Adam.

James Dick Construction commissions new ultra fines recovery system
A new ultra fines recovery system, designed and engine ered by CDE, will help James Dick Construction ensure it is maximizing extraction from its quarry in Caledon, Ontario.
The James Dick group of companies was founded in 1964. Since then, the company has become a leader in the supply of sand, gravel and limestone products in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
In 1983, James Dick acquired Caledon Sand & Gravel and its 825-acre Caledon Pit. At the time, the property was one of the largest pits in Canada. The Caledon Pit expanded in 1997, ensuring reserves of quality construction materials for the local market for decades to come.
James Dick Construction’s focus is driven by a desire to ensure a consistent supply of materials with minimal social and environmental impact by locating itself close to demand.
Continuing this trend, the new state-of-the-art, 50 tons per hour, ultra fines recovery system with cyclone technology maximizes material recovery from its quarrying business, extending the operational life of its active extraction sites and available reserves.
The business maintains a range of wet and dry screening equipment, including traditional sand screw technology, an essential innovation in the quarrying
industry over the years, but one that lacks the accuracy of modern washing equipment.
“Fully operational, our highly efficient ultra fines recovery system will make a significant contribution to Caledon Sand & Gravel,” said Adrian Convery, CDE Business Development Manager for Canada.
“By recovering larger quantities of premium sand more efficiently we can sup port James Dick Construction to maximize its return on investment and maintain its competitive advantage in the local market by boosting the availability of its material reserves.”
CDE cyclone tech
The benefits of cyclone technology outweigh the capabilities of sand screws by achieving more material output and minimizes the loss of high-quality fines.
CDE cyclone technology de livers control of silt cut points and product specification to produce high value, inspec construction materials straight from the belt.
Sustained demand for sand and aggregate prod ucts coupled with stringent regulatory requirements necessitates that producers maximize their reserves to maintain profitability and meet the demands of the market.
The new CDE plant is pro cessing material previously lost to the overflow of two existing sand screws to re
cover premium fine washed masonry sand at a rate of 45 tons per hour.
“We want to ensure our operations remain as efficient as possible so that we can continue to service the local construction industry for many years to come,” said James Dick, CEO of James Dick Construction.
Dick added the key to the
quarry operation in Caledon is to ensure the company can extract as much value and material from its reserves as possible, rather than pursuing new extraction sites.
“It’s the most responsible approach for the communities in which we operate and also from an environmental perspective, reasons which dovetail with the economic
benefits of the approach,”
Dick said. “The solution delivered by the team at CDE will play a major role in securing a consistent and reliable supply of materials for the construction industry in the Greater Toronto Area.”
Established by Dick almost 60 years ago, James Dick Construction Limited started out with a D6 dozer
and single axle dump truck that were put to work at its Adjala and 20th Sideroad pit in the Albion township.
Today, its primary operations focus on the production, sale and transport of construction materials produced from its portfolio of 18 close-to-market pits and quarries in Southern Ontario.

Not all workplaces have the luxury of cranking up the thermostat when things get chilly. Given Mother Nature’s unpredictability, you should be planning well in advance to keep your jobsite heated through whatever the season brings.
If you aren’t informed about heating requirements and prepared with the right methods for your project, you
run the risk of losing time, resources and money – not to mention putting your workers in danger.
You may require ambient heaters with sensors for curing concrete, direct fired heaters for keeping large areas and your workers warm, or sufficient heat to thaw the ground so you can dig. There are many other factors at play too: the size of your project, how many rooms you’ll be building, the materials you’ll be using, the number of workers on site, and how long the project will take.
The good news is you don’t need to figure all of this out on your own. Coming up with the right solution is much easier when you work with a rental partner and climate specialists who can help you understand the needs of your job site. This means providing you with the most cost-effective heating requirements and right-sized heaters. Some dealers are even starting to supply gas fitters, provide safety training for workers and apply for the necessary permits on your behalf.
Here’s some advice to help you approach winter with confidence.
Start
planning early
No matter what size facility you’re building, it’s crucial to have a plan.
WHAT DO
When loading material is on your to-do list, Wacker Neuson is ready for action. Our powerful wheel loaders, excavators, skid steers and compact track loaders deliver both performance and comfort. And our newest utility track loader offers class-leading hinge-pin height and fast cycle times to help you load, move and place material precisely.
You may need to understand the difference between the outside temperature and the temperature you want inside, the tightness of the building and indoor activity or how much heat is generated by work done inside.
Different heating configurations may be required depending on what stage you’re at in your project, so it’s important to plan for changing the type of temporary heating you’re using throughout the construction project.
Starting early is especially important for larger projects,
as your rental provider’s heating inventory can be limited come fall and early winter. You don’t want to scramble at the last minute; if you call your rental provider in November, you may not get the equipment you need.
Partner with the right rental provider
When contractors rent construction equipment, they usually know exactly what they need to get the job done. When it comes to heat, few contractors know what they want, need or even what’s available to rent.
Whether electric or propane powered, any kind of heat equipment should be treated with care and caution. Identifying the type of heat needed and determining how to install and repair equipment should only be done by trained professionals.
Fuel costs can be substantial, and they’re likely to only get higher. This is especially true if you’re working with large buildings or structures. Ensuring your equipment is as fuel efficient as possible is key to reducing costs. This means working with a reputable rental partner who can offer you the most up-to-date equipment and technology. Your rental provider should also be able to assist with heat plans and employ licensed gas fitters and apprentices to help understand the assortment of heating equipment you may require for your job. This can be a complex process for larger projects, as it involves looking at plans and drawings of the building to help understand and identify any potential issues that may arise.
Train your employees
It’s also important to find a rental partner that can help train your workers so they can better understand what they can and cannot

do when it comes to using heating equipment. Your employees need to understand the hazards of various equipment and be aware of the procedures and controls necessary to mitigate those hazards.
Training programs can provide the information and hands-on practice necessary for construction workers to be able to safely connect, activate and disconnect heaters and propane.
Make the most of tech
No contractor can afford for concrete to go bad.
About 30 years ago, preventing this meant paying someone to watch the temperature 24 hours a day to ensure concrete cured properly.
Now with telematics, you can monitor everything from your smartphone. It's been a real game changer for the in-
dustry in terms of efficiency and productivity.
Technology has improved safety too. You can receive smartphone notifications when carbon dioxide is detected on your jobsite, alerting you to a potential issue with your combustion heating equipment.
When we can help contractors do things faster and safer, we can save them both money and time. And since time is the single most expensive thing on a construction site, this is incredibly valuable. Gone are the days of waiting a week for concrete to cure, hoping that it would be ready in time for the next stage of the project. New technology is not only providing the right levels of heat and humidity, but can also notify workers the moment the concrete is ready.
Prioritize safety
Safety concerns are always top of mind, especially when
it comes to anything electrical or involving propane.
Direct fired heaters have a low risk when used properly, but when placed next to combustible materials or wood-framed structures, they can cause a serious fire hazard if not set up properly.
Compared to indirect fired heaters, direct fired heaters have risks of introducing hazardous gases such as carbon monoxide. This is why it's important to match the equipment to the site and have a qualified individual do your set-ups as they will be familiar with product and manufacturer specs and Canadian gas codes.
No matter what heat source you’re using, you need to ensure everyone is trained and comfortable with safety procedures and knows when to call your rental partner or climate specialist so they can properly handle equipment. With the winter months quickly approaching, it’s
critical to have a plan to keep your construction site heated, and your workers safe and warm. What works best for your jobsite depends on a lot of factors – and planning for heat is not always easy, especially when you’re working with millions of square feet
or an 80-storey high-rise.
Before you make any decisions, you need to understand the needs of your workers, the different types of heat available and the working conditions. Only then will you be able to provide the right level of comfort in a safe work
environment. Make sure your rental partner is ready to support you through all of this and able to tell you exactly how they are going to heat your project, while also providing a great team of people and the right technology to monitor your heat and track your progress.

Case dealers help train Team Rubicon volunteers
Case Construction Equipment recently partnered with Team Rubicon to train volunteer heavy equipment operators.
Last fall, Case asked its dealers to help support a new initiative with Team Rubicon: train more volunteers to operate heavy equipment for its veteran-led humanitarian organization that serves global communities before, during and after disasters and crises.
The pilot program commenced this year with two Case dealers: the Indiana-based RPM Machinery and Lawrence Equipment in Virginia.
On a monthly basis, the dealers provide machines for Team Rubicon volunteers to train, an indoor classroom and an outdoor operating space.
“As soon as we heard about the need to help train more heavy equipment operators, we raised our hand,” said Dustin Cole, Executive Vice President of Lawrence Equipment. “We’re very active in our local communities and want to ensure Virginia is prepared if disaster strikes, as well as help train volunteers to deploy wherever they are needed throughout the U.S. and Canada.”
Case and its parent company’s foundation, CNH Industrial Foundation, have been long-time supporters of Team Rubicon.
“The work that Team Rubicon does aligns with the company’s sustainability goals and the CNH Industrial Foundation’s priorities,” said Michelle Javaherian, Community Impact Manager at CNH Industrial.
Team Rubicon’s volunteers, known as “Greyshirts,” register for the monthly training and learn how to operate CTLs and excavators.
“One of the most critical tasks after disasters strike is getting resources to that area. Our Greyshirts, including sawyers and heavy equipment operators, help clear trees and debris from roads, allowing first responders and survivors to regain access to the community," said William Porter, Director of Operations Support at Team Rubicon.
If within 725 km of a participating Case dealer location, they receive a notice through the Team Rubicon newsletter encouraging their participation in training.
This training has been used by Team Rubicon in all phases of the disaster cycle, including wildfire mitiga -
tion, hurricane response and long-term storm recovery.
Case and Team Rubicon plan to expand the number of dealers participating in the training program in 2024.

High Reach finds its niche with Orion forklift trucks
In 2009, High Reach Inc. created its first Orion forklift truck.
The Model 120K, named for its 120,000 lbs. (54,431 kg) lift capacity, was manufactured to fulfill a wish list of features required by a client in Melbourne, Australia.
Since creating the first model, the Orion forklift truck line has grown to include nine machines ranging in lift capacity from 24,000 lbs. (10,886 kg) to 160,000 lbs. (72,575 kg).
“We felt there was a gap missing. After listening for 30 years to our many rental clients and end users, we decided to fill that gap,” said Santo De Arcangelis, President of High Reach Inc. “We do not think we reinvented the mouse trap; we just made a smarter one.”
Designed and manufactured at the High Reach headquarters in Oakville, Ontario, the Orion forklift
trucks are operating throughout Canada, as well as 12 US states, Puerto Rico and Mexico.
The forklift trucks are used for a variety of material handling operations, including nuclear installations, military applications, port facilities, die handling, moving machinery and plant relocation.
De Arcangelis explained the name Orion and the brand’s compass rose logo were selected to mirror the company’s values and growth strategy.
“The compass rose of our High Reach logo is a symbol of knowing where we are, where we are going and where we came from,”
De Arcangelis said. “The Orion constellation is visible throughout the world, conspicuous and recognizable, and is one of the brightest in the night sky. It is our intention to ex-
pose our product to potential users as broadly as our growth allows.”
All Orion forklift trucks feature the Orion Quick Change Carriage, which allows the user to switch between using forks, a boom attachment or a coil prong in about 10 minutes.
As well, a unique tire design provides a light footprint, allowing indoor or outdoor use of the forklift trucks.
For operator comfort and safety, the Orion line includes high quality seats, tilt steering, back up camera, a digital load scale and an optional remote control.
The machines are also equipped with hydrostatic drives to ensure smooth load handling, while the full-power vertical and horizontal boom function delivers another boost to versatility.
In the field, the 40K has become the most common Orion forklift in the nine-model line.
“We like to think that all our models are built with a destination and purpose in mind to serve our multifaceted customers in various industries, some are for niche applications,” De Arcangelis said.
Tony Villa, of Villa Float Service, has worked as High Reach’s main transportation contractor for more than three decades. When picking up an Orion machine at the end of its rental period, negative feedback is rare.
“They have really come on board and become a manufacturer who produces a state-of-the-art machine,” Villa said.
Since the Orion line was introduced, Villa had delivered the forklift trucks to various industries,
from steel companies to nuclear facilities to cricket breeders that farm the bug for protein.
“They really shine on a cycle duty application,” Villa said. “When you put (a different forklift truck) against the Orion in a cycle duty application, there's no comparison because they have the bigger engines, the bigger transmissions and the bigger footprint on the wheels.”
Alongside the Orion forklift trucks, High Reach maintains Canada’s largest inventory of Broderson Carry Deck Cranes and Versa-Lift’s large capacity forklifts. For the Orion line, De Arcangelis hasn’t ruled out introducing new models in the future.
“At the age of 87, Michelangelo said ‘Ancora Imparo’ (still learning). We intend to learn more by listening to the needs of the ever-changing industry and our clients,” he said.

If you’re an excavator owner, operator or both, you know that a little daily TLC will help keep your machine running productively and efficiently and can increase its resale value when the time comes to trade it in.
It doesn’t take hours to inspect and maintain your excavators — a few minutes before and after your workday can make a world of difference.
It starts with a proper prestart inspection. Just like time is money on your jobs, not taking a few minutes to do an inspection can hurt your uptime, cause unnecessary damage and wear to your machine and compromise safety.
Here are some tips to consider when performing an excavator walk-around:
1. Star t in the same place every day. I always start at the front of the cab. That way when I end my walk-around, I end at the cab as well and can just hop in if everything looks good.
2. Mak e your inspection routine. Look in less obvious but critical areas.
3. Look up, down, left and right. Be as thorough as possible.
4. Report your findings verbally to your supervisor and provide a written version using a pre-start checklist sheet.
Pre-start checklist
For the actual inspection, here are steps you or your crew should take each time
before starting and operating an excavator:
· Visually inspect all compartments to see if there’s any leakage or damage to components; then take the necessary action if anything is wrong.
· Walk around the machine and conduct visual checks. Take a close look at the boom and arm for cracks, especially if you’re working in harsh conditions or in cold climates. Save time and money on unexpected repair costs by inspecting these areas:
Boom and cylinder mounting
Arm and cylinder mounting
Bucket and cylinder mounting
Main pump compartment
Battery compartment
Swing drive and main control valve
Track drive
Track chain and shoes
Lower frame
Superstructure
Side doors and cowl frames
· Look at the electrical box and the engine air filter. If the system indicates “full water separator,” drain it into a safe container.
· Make sure the air cabin filter is clean, especially if operating in a dusty environment.
· Check the radiator and coolers for any damage. If you’re working in a confined environment, ensure these parts are not clogged. A clogged cooler
or radiators could result in poor performance or overheating. Be sure you’re following the maintenance intervals carefully.
· Check the hydraulic lines for leaks. A damaged line can create heat in the system or severe oil leakage.
· Check all hydraulic connections, pipes and hoses for any external damage.
· Ensure safety items like mirrors, cameras, seatbelts and the safety lever are in working order.
· Check your transmission, hydraulic and coolant fluids.
· Remove any dirt or small pieces of rock in the bucket linkage.
· Finally, turn on the main battery switch before entering the cab — no power can be distributed until the main battery switch is on.
When an excavator is new and the engine has only run for a few hours, it’s a good idea to take a look at the engine oil level. This check can be easily carried out from the cab by looking at the display. If you prefer to do it the traditional way, that’s fine too. Check the oil and always use a clean paper towel to avoid any contamination on the dipstick. The oil level should be between the minimum and maximum levels.
After your shift
There are also a few things you should do at the end of a shift to make sure the next day’s work starts off right.
Be sure to fill up with fuel at the end of the day’s shift to will reduce the risk of condensation developing in the tank overnight.
While filling up the tank,
fill up on diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) as well.
Always disconnect the main battery switch and park the excavator with the digging equipment fully extended. In this position, the piston rods are protected. Clean the undercarriage to reduce strain on the components, especially during winter. If you fail to do this, mud in the chain can freeze to the undercarriage and you may be unable to move the machine the next day. Not cleaning out the undercarriage will greatly reduce its life and likely add unnecessary expenses.
Undercarriage inspections
Speaking of undercarriages, they’re one of the most expensive components on your excavators to repair or replace. The undercarriage supports the total weight of the machine and is continuously subjected to rocks and other obstacles when in operation. Many of its parts are exposed to constant wear and stress.
Dealer technicians are great resources to perform undercarriage inspections, but I also recommend conducting a visual inspection once a week or every 40 operating hours, which means your technicians and operators should also be doing these.
It’s important to note that visual undercarriage inspections should not replace regularly scheduled undercarriage management. Proper undercarriage management entails measuring undercarriages, tracking wear, replacing worn components and swapping component positions to extend the total undercarriage life.
You’ll need conversion charts for each brand of undercarriage to convert them to per cent worn.

Essential maintenance tips to improve uptime and resale value Maximizing excavator performance
What to look for
To do an inspection on the machine, it should be somewhat clean for the sake of accuracy. Although it may be time-consuming, cleaning the undercarriage regularly will keep it in better condition, make it easier to see issues at an early stage and lessen the wear on the components.
Measure the track tension and document the results. Adjust the track tension if necessary and document the adjustments. You can find the correct track tension in your operator manual.
Remember to check these components as well:
Track shoes
Links
Pins
Bushings
Top rollers
Bottom rollers
Idlers
Sprockets
Keep in mind the sprocket is at the rear of the machine and the idler is in the front, so the right and left side aren’t mixed up in your report. Carefully check the links for cracks, spalling, side wear and wear on the pin boss. You can also count the links to see if one was removed during assembly to
tighten the undercarriage. If someone has made it too tight, that will spell trouble down the road.
The last step is to compare the two sides of the undercarriage assembly. Does one side show more wear than the other? Should one side have more wear than the other?
Additional resources
If you’re unsure exactly what you’re looking at or what might need to be done to your excavator, your local dealer can help.
A telematics program is also a great way to be aware of potential issues — the best ones simplify fault codes and alerts by only sending you the most critical issues with clear information on how to resolve them (and the consequences of ignoring them).
Some OEMs even have dedicated teams that monitor telematics data for you and proactively alert you before a component fails. Buying machines with warranty coverage is another good way to ensure that your excavator components stay in good working order.

The first KTEG demolition excavator in Canada is helping Priestly Demolition to complete projects in record time.
KTEG, which stands for Kenki Technology Group, is a jointly funded development company based in Germany and owned by Hitachi Con-
struction Machinery and
Kiesel Technology.
In June, Priestly Demolition received a KMC 500P demolition excavator, the first of its kind in Canada. Built on a Hitachi excavator base, the KTEG machine features a 52,600 kg operating weight, 28-metre reach and the ability
to carry a 3,000 kg attachment.
For rapid assembly, the boom is equipped with an OilQuick coupler that allows Priestly to assemble the machine in a matter of minutes.
“It's really going to put us ahead of the game when it comes to mobilizing machines,” said Ryan Priestly,
CEO of Priestly Demolition. “You don't need to send a technician; you don't need someone to hook up or disconnect pins or hydraulic lines. So, it is a much safer, more cost-effective process.”
The first job for the KTEG KMC 500P was the demolition of a concrete silo. The Priestly crew arrived on site by 7 a.m., assembled the machine, took down the silo and had the demolition excavator back on the truck by 11 a.m.
“That would never happen before,” Priestly said. "This is truly just the push of a button, like you're going to pick up the bucket on your quick coupler on your excavator. It's awesome.”
On a good day with ideal conditions, assembling a high reach excavator usually requires about 30 minutes to an hour.
“And that’s when everything is going perfectly. So, sometimes it can take up to two to three hours,” Priestly said. “Those guys could have been there until five o'clock that night.”
The boom quick connect system will also aid in machine set up in dense, urban areas. Priestly explained setting up a high reach machine in a city often requires lane closures or the use of a parking lot.
“When you're working on tight sites like in downtown Toronto, you don't have a lot of room,” he said. “This machine will be lightspeed ahead of the rest as far as getting the boom on it and getting it to work.”
A multi-purpose machine
Another advantage of the boom quick connect system is the ability to switch between a high reach and standard boom.
“This BQC system removes the need for multiple machines on a single site, allowing operators to approach every project with a single multi-functional option,” said Lee McMartin, Vice President of Construction and Forestry for Wajax, the Canadian dealer for KTEG. “With
a standard excavator front, high reach demolition front and everything in between, the KTEG 500P is going to be a game changer for many in the demolition and civil construction fields.”
Priestly’s fleet already includes about 50 OilQuick coupler systems, but the KTEG machine is the first with a couple on the boom.
“We have definitely developed a high-level of confidence around OilQuick’s reliability and in their performance as far as safety goes,” Priestly said. “They haven't been letting us down.”
The Coreum
KTEG products only recently became available in Canada. Priestly discovered the machine following an invitation to visit the Coreum near Frankfurt, Germany. The Coreum is a 120,000 square metre forum for the construction and recycling industries to connect and test machines. Currently, about 100 machines and 300 attachments from 49 manufacturers are displayed at the Coreum. “It's an awesome place with all sorts of different machines lined up for you to try,” Priestly said. “It’s like a big proving ground.”

EARTHMOVING & EXCAVATION
All in with Liebherr
A Liebherr 914 will help Silkstone Group define its niche
Travis Hesketh is going “all in” with Liebherr, but it’s not a blind bet.
Following a career in motorsport track design and construction, Hesketh started Silkstone Group in 2021 in Belleville, Ontario. The excavation, land clearing and landscaping business started out with a skid steer, 6-ton excavator and tractor, and soon expanded with the addition of a 23-ton excavator.
“So, we got that big machine and started working with it, but we realized it was a little too big for certain things we were doing more regularly. And our 6-ton was a little too small,” Hesketh said.
As Silkstone Group continued to develop its niche in excavation, Hesketh decided to find an excavator that could handle jobs big and small, while simplifying transportation from jobsite to jobsite.
While visiting the National Heavy Equipment Show in 2022, Hesketh was introduced to Liebherr excavators.
“I sat in one of their machines and I was just super impressed,” Hesketh said.
He asked if Silkstone Group would be able to try-out one of the machines, and Liebherr provided an excavator to test on a land clearing job.
“So, we got to use it. And it just kind of felt like the Rolls Royce of excavators,” he said.
After the test run, Hes -
keth began contacting other owner/operators with Liebherr equipment in their fleet.
“I reached out on social media to everybody, like anyone that had a Liebherr. I do a lot of homework,” he said.
“I wanted to hear what they had to say without bias, and it was all positive.”
After completing his research, Hesketh decided on the 914 Compact. The excavator features an operating weight of about 14,750 kg and a maximum bucket capacity of 0.80 cubic metres. With a short tailswing radius of 1.55 metres, the machine is ideal for narrow jobsites, urban applications or near roads.
For Silkstone Group, the 914 will be able to tackle a variety of projects as the company grows.
“It can still do septic tanks, dig foundations or build retaining walls, and we’re able to move it ourselves behind our dump truck. So, I thought it was a great start,” Hesketh said. “You can still do what a 936 can do, sometimes, but it's just going to take lot longer.”
Low fuel consumption and fast parts delivery were common traits Hesketh heard when talking to other Liebherr customers.
“The Liebherr Canada headquarters is in Burlington, so we won’t be down long if we need parts,” he said. “And you're not going through a salesperson and
a dealership. It's like you're dealing with the manufacturer, and I thought that was pretty awesome.”
The machine was also available from the factory in black, which Hesketh sees as an opportunity to make his company standout from others in the business.
“We went all in and put it on black,” he said.
Growing in popularity
The 914 Compact excavator has become one of Liebherr’s most popular machines in Canada.
“The size is such that it can just do a lot of work, more than people expect. And that's why we've seen such growth in that segment,” said Dave Reid, Sales Manager Earthmoving at Liebherr Canada. “It’s a very versatile machine.”
The Tier 4 Final, 121 hp Deutz engine is turbo charged with a precleaner. The excavator also includes a built-in auto-lube system and a reversing fan.
“These are features you usually don't find on a machine in this class that we bring as standard,” Reid said.
For maintenance, all service points are available from ground level, including the engine oil level and filling nozzle. A clamshell opening on the side of the machine provides complete access to the engine.
“As far as maintenance
goes, really nothing else in the class can touch us,” Reid said.
Rototilt R4
Silkstone Group’s 914 Compact is also equipped with a Rototilt R4 tiltrotator. The 380 kg tiltrotator can handle breakout forces of up to 120,225 foot pounds and features a 40-degree tilt angle and a rotation speed of 7 seconds at 60 litres per minute.
“It has a quick change on the top and on the bottom, so you can easily remove the Rototilt itself from the machine without getting out,” said Paul Contant, Rototilt’s Regional Manager for Eastern Canada.
The R4 tiltrotator includes built-in sensors and an in-cab screen to keep the operator informed of the tool position. A return to dig feature automatically shifts the work tool to a pre-set position.
“It's the top offering, at the moment, in our product line,” Contant said.
Motorsport inspired
From its trucks to trailers to excavators, all of Silkstone Group’s equipment is branded to not only promote the business, but the names of manufacturers included in company’s fleet.
“I had an idea of how I wanted it to look. From like a professional motorsports background, I looked at the
way a race team is run, and I want it to look like we're like a factory construction team,” Hesketh said.
He is often asked why he decided to focus time and money on graphics that promote manufacturers.
“Our whole plan from the beginning was to align with brands that fit the same sort of ideology that we have,” Hesketh said. “I'm just going to showcase the stuff that I like; the stuff that I believe in that I chose for a reason.”

This summer, Caterpillar announced it had completed production of its 50,000th wheel excavator.
The Cat M318 was sold to Wolff & Müller, a pri -
vately-owned construction company based in Stuttgart, Germany.
Representatives from Wolff & Müller received the commemorative Cat M318 wheel
excavator at a ceremony held at Cat’s facility in Grenoble, France.
The wheel excavator line was created in 1984 by Caterpillar, Eder and Zeppelin Baumaschinen, the Cat dealer in Germany. Under the Cat Eder brand, the wheel excavator included four models.
By 1992, the line became a 100 per cent Cat product with a designated wheel excavator team.
“Offering quick movement on the jobsite and from site to site without damaging the ground, the wheel excavator proved to be a game changer for contractors working in congested areas and markets with mature infrastructure,” said Brian Abbott, Vice President of Product Management for the Excavation Division.
“The advanced hydraulic design, plumbed differently than conventional excavators, allows them to go beyond digging to operate a range of hydraulic work tools to increase application flexibility. We are pleased to present our 50,000th production wheel excavator to our longtime customer, Wolff & Müller.”
The flagship Cat M318 Wheel Excavator offers a balanced design of size and performance. It’s compact enough to work in tight spaces but delivers high performance for larger projects, making it an all-around performer.
Recent design advancements offer increased fuel economy, higher swing torque, improved visibility and maintenance as well as
a suite of technology such as Cat Grade, Cat Payload and Cat E-Fence.
Wolff & Müllern now owns more than 100 Caterpillar machines for completing structural and industrial construction, civil engineering, steel construction, building renovation, road construction and foundation work.
“We are very pleased about our partnership with Zeppelin and Caterpillar, which has existed for almost 70 years and is constantly expanding. The reasons for the good cooperation are, in addition to the innovative machine technology, the excellent nationwide service and, above all, the appreciative, personal contact with each other,” said Torsten Schuckert, Wolff &
Müllern’s Head of Logistics Service Unit.
Wheel excavator growth Europe and South Korea were among the first adopters of Cat’s wheel excavators. However, the Cat wheel excavator line has grown in popularity in China, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North America and other world markets.
Today’s expanded Cat wheel excavator line includes the Cat M314 to M322 for markets with higher emissions regulations; the M315 GC for China; three models (M315 to M320D2) for markets with lower emissions standards; the M323F railroad-specific model; and four materials handlers from the MH3022 to MH3040.

Pictured here in 1951 is a Link-Belt K 365 model cable shovel at work preparing a site for a subway station in Toronto.
Work had commenced the previous year on the underground aspects of TTC subway construction. The Link-Belt K 365 shovel was rated at 1.53 cubic metres and was powered by either a Caterpillar, Cummins or GM diesel engine in the 135 kW range and was equipped with a torque converter. It could be converted from shovel front to boom for hoisting, dragline, clam and backhoe.
Link-Belt started out developing a chain drive system primarily for agricultural equipment in the 1880s. By 1922 they were manufacturing crawler cranes and a decade later had introduced hydraulic controls. During this era the Speeder Machinery Corp. became part of Link-Belt, hence the Link-Belt Speeder name.
Eventually, Link-Belt built a plant in Woodstock, Ontario which operated into the 1980s to service the growing Canadian market. The plant built various sizes of truck cranes, as well as LS 4000 and LS 5000 hydraulic excavators. HCEA
Canada has a 1950 Link-Belt K 360 on boom, which was donated by McNally Construction Ltd. of Hamilton, Ontario.
The Historical Construction Equipment Association’s (HCEA Canada) 2023 event the ‘Last Blast’ takes place Oct. 14 at the Simcoe County Museum, near Barrie, Ontario. To see more than 60 pieces of vintage construction equipment in action be sure to attend. HCEA Canada is a proud Heritage Partner of the Simcoe County Museum. Link-Belt boosts efficiency with new X4S excavators
Built upon the award-winning X4 Series, Link-Belt has developed the new X4S excavator series that includes five machines.
The Link-Belt 170 X4S, 190 X4S, 220 X4S, 260 X4S and 300 X4S were introduced to Canada and the United States this year. The new excavator series features design improvements to increase durability, performance, serviceability and operator comfort.
With new features on all models, such as custom flow balance, customizable joystick function buttons, new work modes and Trimble-Ready components, the new X4S delivers improved efficiency and up to 5 per cent improved cycle times.
“The new X4S line, with a focus on performance and innovative features, delivers up to 17 per cent increase in engine horsepower and 19 per cent improved fuel economy over its predecessor,” said Adam Woods, General Manager of Innovation and Product Portfolio Strategies at LBX.
The Link-Belt X4S series is also available with options such as HD arms, WAVES, reversible engine fans and Precision Grade on select models.
“With this performance and effi -
ciency improvement, many OEM’s would stop there, but Link-Belt Excavators didn’t. Now the customer will get WAVES, our Wide Angle Visual Enhancement System, with 270-degree birds-eye view, standard, therefore improving site awareness,” Woods said. Dynamic stability control, payload, height and depth alarm and a digital level, are all standard equipment on the Premium 220 X4S machine.
An all-new 190 X4S excavator features a 120-hp Yanmar Tier 4 final-compliant engine. Boasting an upsized undercarriage compared to its little sibling, the 170 X4S, the 190 X4S offers superior lift performance, improved stability and productivity.
The Link-Belt cab includes improved ergonomics as well as a high-back seat with air, tilt and heat as standard. Adjustable pivoting armrests, headrests, seat height and lumbar support provide operators comfort on long workdays.
“All of this, coupled with a standard Precision Grade ready spec, are examples of the focus Link-Belt excavators put into X4S to make this machine the performer our customer base has come to expect,” Woods said.

Engineered to tackle a wide range of tasks on jobsites, Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas has introduced the ZX130-7 and ZX160LC-7 full-size excavators.
The new next generation excavators incorporate Hitachi’s latest comfort enhancements, hydraulic system refinements and changes to simplify serviceability.
“The ZX130-7 and ZX160LC-7 feature a number of improvements and updates to provide more productivity, performance, operator comfort and fuel efficiency,” said Patrick Baker, Product Manager for medium and large excavators at Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas Inc.
The 14,000-kg ZX130-7 of-
fers a maximum dig depth of 6.03 metres and a bucket breakout force of 23,380 pounds.
The ZX160LC-7 has an operating weight of 17,900 kg, a maximum dig depth of 6.49 metres and a bucket breakout force of 25,179 pounds.
The ZX130-7 uses a 100 hp Isuzu engine. A Yanmar en-
gine powers the ZX160LC-7, producing 132 hp. It features economy, power and high-power modes to match available power to the working conditions. An auto idle system with auto shut-down control helps to conserve fuel.
HIOS IV hydraulic system
The HIOS IV hydraulic system improves fuel efficiency by minimizing hydraulic loss during operation. It ensures a responsive boom, arm and bucket with smooth control. Both excavators feature adjustable attachment, arm and swing priority through the monitor to match machine performance with the attachment.
The new 20 cm LCD, anti-glare monitor includes an attachment pre-set system, allowing operators to pre-set flow rates and pressures for up to 16 attachments.
“A larger cab with ergo
nomic controls on the ZX130-7 and ZX160LC-7 excavators addresses customer demand for a comfortable operator environment. This results in increased productivity through reduced operator fatigue,” Baker said.
The larger cab includes a dual adjustable seat and console that allows operators to find the perfect operating position to remain comfortable for long working days in the seat. Low-effort pilot controls reduce operator strain and enhance controllability. For convenience, switches have been collectively installed on the right side with easy access to those frequently used.
The cab features four fluid-filled elastic mounts that reduce vibration when travelling. The monitor also includes Bluetooth radio so operators can remain hands free and focused on the task.
Aerial Angle
For improved visibility, the excavators are equipped with Hitachi’s Aerial Angle peripheral vision camera system. The system provides a wide 270-degree bird’s-eye view of the machine’s immediate environment. The operator can select five different Aerial Angle viewing screens on the monitor. This allows the preferred viewing position for enhanced safety and productivity.
A rear-view camera allows the operator to see the area directly below the counterweight.
The Hitachi ZAXIS-7 excavators feature enhancements to critical components such as the undercarriage and boom. On the undercarriage, an anti-mud-compaction lower roller design helps prevent mud from entering and damaging the oil seals. The upper and lower rollers also feature improved idler sealing.
As well, the ZAXIS-7 excavators feature a strengthened
boom end and foot. For durability, the bushings are installed in the brackets at the boom end and the boom foot.
“Ease of service was a major consideration when updating the ZX130-7 and ZX160LC-7 excavators. This saves operators time and helps ensure maximum uptime,” Baker said.
For maintenance, wideopen engine covers provide access, while filters are within easy reach and take minutes to maintain.
A spin-on type fuel filter prevents dust from entering the fuel circuit during maintenance. An inner element of the engine air filter protects the engine from dust ingress while cleaning the outer element.
The air conditioner is also protected from dust with an internal filter with a seal that prevents intrusion.
Tracking maintenance is simplified with the multi-functional monitor. It indicates pre-set maintenance intervals each time the key is turned on. Engine oil and coolant levels can be conveniently checked right from the operator’s seat.
ConSite
ConSite remotely monitors operational status and alerts owners and operators to upcoming maintenance needs.
A dealer-installed option on the ZX130-7 and ZX160LC-7 is ConSite OIL, which monitors engine and hydraulic oil conditions to proactively catch issues before any fault codes are triggered in the machine. This helps drive uptime by catching oil degradation before damage to critical systems can occur.
ConSite Air allows the excavator to be diagnosed and updated remotely. The servicing dealer can remotely diagnose issues that may arise, leading to increased uptime.

FORESTRY
KOMATSU’S COMPLETE RANGE OF EIGHT-WHEELED HARVESTERS
The new powerful, yet compact, 951XC harvester excels in difficult terrain
Komatsu Forest has developed a new final logging harvester that combines power with agility and improved climbing ability.
The Komatsu 951XC is the third addition to Komatsu Forest’s range of eight-wheeled harvesters specially designed for demanding conditions.
The new harvester was developed to tackle final logging in steep terrain and on soft ground.
The eight-wheel design, combined with the stable Komatsu concept, ensures a machine that delivers stability, manoeuvrability and low ground pressure.
The 951XC is also optimized for use with the Komatsu C164 – a harvester head specially designed for logging large trees.
The harvester is part of Komatsu Forest's product series of machines specially designed for challenging conditions.
“Now we have a complete range of eight-wheeled machines, specially designed for demanding conditions,” said Joakim Johansson, Product Manager of Harvesters at Komatsu Forest.
Compact design
The machine design is similar to the Komatsu 951, although there are some differences. As well, the 951XC
has the same wheel size as the 931XC, giving the machine a more compact design and giving the 951XC a total machine length that is shorter than the 951.
The harvester has 242 kN of underlying tractive force and unique interaction between engine, control system and power transmission. The hydrostatic transmission enables engine power to be fully utilized, providing considerable advantages in difficult terrain as well as excellent climbing ability. This is due to the machine's large hydrostatic pump, which can maintain higher speeds at high tractive forces.
“What is special about the 951XC is that it combines the strength of a 951 with an extremely compact design,” Joakim said. “Since it has about the same dimensions as the 931XC it can be used in denser stands.”
The harvester is also equipped with hub reductions that provide an advantage when working in challenging conditions, such as steep, snowy or wet terrain, as they increase the life of the bogie and machine reliability.
As well, new working hydraulics better utilize the diesel engine, and provide faster feeding from start to maximum speed, while al -
lowing the saw motor to work more efficiently.
“The new working hydraulics contribute to a feeling of an even stronger engine according to the test operators that have been working with the 951XC,” Joakim said.
Although the working hydraulics are new, in all other respects the Komatsu 951XC shares the same proven design as other Komatsu harvesters.
“This enables several crane and head functions to be used simultaneously with retained maximum hydraulic power, all thanks to the machine's hydraulic power coordination,” Joakim said.
Parallel crane
All Komatsu harvesters are equipped with parallel cranes. With the Komatsu Forest design concept, the lifting booms and outer booms are linked, which eliminates an entire aspect of crane control. This concept simplifies crane operation by ensuring the head is always in level regardless of crane cycle stage. The parallel crane is also designed to be fast in its outward movements, when the head is unloaded and powerful in its return movements, when the head is heavily loaded.
Compared to the 951, the Komatsu 951XC has a signifi-
cantly shorter distance from the centre of the crane to the front wheels. This creates a larger working area in front of the machine that enables the operator to work at shorter reaches.
“The new larger working area in front of the machine means more powerful crane movements. And for those who equips their machines with Smart Crane they get an even more easily manoeuvred crane with excellent precision,” Joakim said.
Operator comfort
Thanks to the machine’s stability and cab, the operator is always seated level without the need to stretch and strain to maintain a good seating position. The 951XC is based on the triedand-tested Komatsu concept that offers favourable weight distribution and has a low centre of gravity.
In addition, the eightwheeled XC series harvesters have a double oscillating bogie on the rear frame giving the machines completely unique handling characteristics.
“Our double oscillating bogie on the rear frame is an innovation of which we’re very proud,” Joakim said.
“As well as increasing stability by lowering the machine’s centre of grav-
ity, the machine follows irregularities in the terrain in a forgiving manner while delivering excellent manoeuvrability in challenging terrain conditions.”
Harvester R&D
The work to develop a new machine is a massive team effort. Before a new machine model is launched, prototypes are thoroughly tested first with Komatsu’s own test operators and then by contractors working in environments suitable for the specific machine model.
“The 951XC is a good machine, stable and comfortable to operate. It is a machine you can trust, and you feel secure working at a long reach. This is definitely a machine I would like to continue to work with,” said Henrik Lysebäck, one of the contractors recruited to test the harvester.
Carbon neutral
Recently, Komatsu Forest’s production facility in Sweden became completely carbon neutral. Komatsu Group has a vision of being carbon neutral by 2050, applying to both the production and use of Komatsu machines.
As of June 26, all vehicles in production, including the forest machines that the company manufactures, will
be fuelled with HVO100, a biodiesel made from renewable raw materials in the form of waste and residual products.
The introduction of HVO100 is an initiative the Komatsu Group is implementing at its European factories this year.
"We are extremely proud that we are now achieving carbon-neutral production of our forest machines. The final and important piece of the puzzle is the introduction of HVO100. But that in no way means that we are finished", said Jens Bengtsson, CEO of Komatsu Forest.
To achieve a carbon-neutral footprint, Komatsu is now continuing to work on the development of future sustainable forest machines.
"It is a combination of new innovations and good collaborations with partners and suppliers that will lead us to the goal,” Bengtsson said. “There is a lot to do, electrification of our machines is already on the agenda, and we are also following the development of fossil-free steel with great interest. For us, it is important that our business contributes to society and our way of doing that is to take the sustainability issue very seriously and work purposefully and persistently – together.”

Eco Log in introducing a new harvester cab alongside its new G-Series harvesters.
The new cab is designed with a full focus on the operator, with every part carefully selected to create the best conditions possible for an efficient, productive and comfortable working day.
“Here at Eco Log, we are in constant dialogue with our customers and we try to listen to them and learn more about their requests and what they need to make their operations work as optimal as possible,” said Emil Forsblom, Head of Product Development at Eco Log.
“The development work is really a team-effort and the result of this is a spacious harvester cabin with good ergonomics, effective sound insulation, great visibility and a whole new system for cab climate and a well-planned work lightning.”
The G-series pendulum arm harvesters includes the models 550, 560, 580 and 590. The new Eco Log 580G now shares the same platform as the 590, which means it is a stronger machine than before.
“I really want to highlight our new 580G. It excels through versatility and strength, and I am sure that anyone who tries it will agree,” Forsblom said.
Last fall, Eco Log introduced several, large updates on the pendulum harvesters – from a new control system, new rear wheel transmission, anti-spin system and a simplified hydraulic system as well as several improvements regarding serviceability and safety through improved access. All updates are now implemented on the new G-series.
“A lot has happened with
our harvesters in the 500-series. We already know that they excel in several areas such as high productivity, reliability and serviceability,” Forsblom said. “This, in combination with the latest updates and now, our new harvester cabin, allows us to offer our customers modern, future-proved machines that are something quite extra.”
Improved HVAC
The new cab is manufactured with windows made of thick safety glass and secure access routes via a new platform that allows the operator to safely enter and exit via the side-mounted door.
As well, the cab uses a brand-new approach for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. The system has automatic temperature regulation and has been thoroughly tested in both hot and cold climates.
The interior includes ample space, several smart storage possibilities and broad charging options with multiple connections. The swivel seat enables the operator to easily access and use the rear cab section.
All G series harvesters are equipped with the Eco Log NexSci control system, user-friendly keypads, an eleven-button joystick and a new sound system with integrated subwoofer that is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The interior of the cabin also has effective sound insulation and comfortable integrated LED lighting. Several options for work lightning at the front as well as rear side of the cab.
“We have put a lot of effort into the cabins interior, in everything from smart storage and broad charging
options to modern palettes and a great sound system. We simply offer a really great cabin,” Forsblom said.

Diamond Mowers says its new Disc Mulcher Belt Drive Pro X is capable of quickly obliterating anything in its path without slowing down.
The new attachment for large frame skid steers or CTLs can go from 0 to 1,000 rpm in a matter of seconds.
“Reinforcing Diamond Mowers’ reputation for building a first-rate mulcher, this game-changing attachment outpaces, outpowers and outclasses anything else on the market,” said Dan Stachel, Executive Vice President of Diamond Mowers. “Because we know time is money and productivity drives profitability, we designed this machine to work as hard as the people who use it.”
Designed for professional mulching contractors in land clearing, vegetation and forestry management, the new Disc Mulcher BD Pro X couples a belt drive with a two-speed hydraulic motor to increase torque and disc speed. This allows its user to take full advantage of the mulcher’s potential.
To ensure optimal productivity, the disc speeds up during re-processing and back-dragging, enabling operators to finish the job in less time. The belt drive system acts as a torque multiplier that prevents the machine from slowing down when slicing through large materials and enables it to recover quickly. As well, an AR 400 bolt-on replaceable
liner helps to reduce abrasion on the shell from thrown materials.
“Based on our testing, this new Disc Mulcher BD Pro X delivers torque values two to three times higher than the industry has ever seen,” Stachel said. “It also spools up two to three times faster than Diamond Mowers’ previous top-tier 160 cc motor for 20 to 30 per cent more productivity.”
The Disc Mulcher BD Pro X features enhanced forward visibility to ensure operators
do not hit rocks and can better position the head on trees. Its efficient design also promotes lower hydraulic temperatures for exceptional efficiency and durability.
“Increased performance has historically come at the expense of overheating,” Stachel explained. “The efficient design of this new attachment actually reduces hydraulic oil temperatures compared to other disc mulchers, allowing operators to work longer in hot weather without the downtime associ-
ated with overheating.”
Diamond Mowers’ new Disc Mulcher BD Pro X is available in a 1.5 metre cutting width to slice through trees and brush up to 35 cm in diameter and mulch material up to 15 cm. It attaches to large frame skid-steers and compact track loaders and is paired with a 107 cc variable displacement bent axis piston motor to match its hydraulic flow of 121 to 189 litres per minute. While Diamond Mower’s FourPoint Hardened Steel Teeth
are standard, users can swap them for Twin Maul Carbide Teeth to absorb impact and ensure the right bite for every application.
“Our customer-centric approach is built around improving processes and introducing new solutions to better serve their needs,” Stachel said. “By continuously innovating our products, we can assure that our customers’ jobs will be easier, more productive, and more profitable than before.”

Fecon unveils new Disc Hawk mulcher for compact loaders
Fecon has launched the new Disc Hawk mulcher specifically designed for high-flow skid steers and compact track loaders.
The disc mulcher increases efficiency where speed and acreage are more important than material size, making the new Disk Hawk an ideal addition to an existing fleet of mulching equipment.
Fecon’s disc mulcher increases productivity with a fast, rougher cut for first-pass vegetation removal or in in-
stances where maximizing material dispersion without fine chip size is ideal.
“We’re excited to expand our lineup of disc mulchers to provide customers with yet another viable tool in their toolbox to help them get the job done right,” said Mark Middendorf, Fecon’s Executive Vice President of Sales.
“This new disc mulcher is a game-changer for contractors looking to increase their productivity in large land clearing operations.”
The Disc Hawk complements an existing mulching fleet as an alternative for tackling jobs that may not require finely shredded material. With a working width of 1.5 metres, the disc mulcher is purpose-built for 75 hp to 132 hp skid steers and compact track loaders that operate with as little as 113 litres to 190 litres per minute of auxiliary hydraulic flow.
The mulcher can tackle thicker vegetative material at higher speeds than traditional drum mulchers. A low-profile motor and deck configuration improves visibility and reduces material buildup.
The Disk Hawk is designed to include configurable discharge and intake chutes to allow operators to boost productivity and dispersion needs.
As well, the open brush chute features a larger throat allowing for higher material intake and faster processing of lighter brush.
The hardwood intake chute guides larger trees into the disc, resulting in quick pro-
cessing of thick vegetation. For applications where material dispersion is preferred — such as in fire fuel prevention — the broadcast discharge chute is ideal for distributing material faster over large areas. Similarly, the processing discharge chute increases the mulching of finer material with dispersion back towards the ground, making it ideal for agriculture or farm site preparation.
The Disk Hawk also includes an adjustable push bar that allows operators to toggle between degrees of disc engagement, depending on the application. For example, in the forward position, the push bar guides small debris into the disc. Positioning the push bar in its far-back angle exposes more of the mulching disc for efficient processing of larger trees and thicker material.
The mulcher attachment features 24 bottom tools, 12 edge knife tools and eight top tools, along with optional carbide tools to minimize wear and ensure optimal performance near rocky terrain.
Ponsse will become the first forest machine manufacturer to use SSAB fossil-free steel.
Ponsse announced a partnership with SSAB to deliver fossil-free steel for forestry machines gradually beginning in 2026.
The partnership aims to solidify Ponsse’s position as a provider of sustainable forest machines and bring SSAB closer to its goal of establishing a fossil-free value chain.
“Our products and services will play a crucial role in assisting our customers in achieving their climate objectives during the transition to a low-carbon economy. Our Ponsse EV1 forwarder concept with completely electric drive and our partnership with SSAB regarding fossil-free steels will lead our development towards carbon neutral forestry,” said Juha Inberg, Chief R&D and Technology Officer at Ponsse Plc.
SSAB aims to deliver fossil-free steel to the market at a commercial scale
during 2026 and to largely eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from operations by 2030. SSAB works with iron ore producer LKAB and energy company Vattenfall as part of the HYBRIT initiative to develop a value chain for fossil-free iron- and steel-making. The initiative plans to replace the coking coal traditionally used for iron ore-based steel-making with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen. This process virtually eliminates carbon dioxide-emissions in steel production.
“It’s great to have a reliable partner like Ponsse now joining our fossil-free journey. Joint efforts are needed to meet the challenging carbon dioxide reduction targets in forest machines,” said Lotta Ruottinen, Sales Director at SSAB Europe.
“Both companies prioritize sustainable solutions and will strive to make a positive impact on forest machines using SSAB fossil-free steel, fostering innovation while respecting nature.”

Tigercat introduces new skidder and purpose-built silviculture carrier
Tigercat has recently developed a new skidder with grapple, as well as a purpose-built silviculture carrier to assist in replanting.
The 630H silviculture carrier replaces modified ag tractors with a purpose-built carrier to pull mounding and plow implements in preparation for replanting operations.
Many forestry companies struggle to prepare post-harvest sites for replanting with modified ag tractors. The machines are not up to the task, usually due to insufficient power, cooling capacity and structural durability.
Tigercat has introduced the 630H silviculture carrier to address these deficiencies. Based on Tigercat's skidder platform, the machine is equipped with hydraulic connectors and several drawbar receiver variations to adapt to a variety of plow or mounding implement con-
nection points. In addition, the carrier can be equipped with an optional winch and bolt-on fairlead system. The whole package is factory equipped and ready to work.
Initial studies conducted by Mexican forestry company, Proteak indicate the 630H carriers are faster, more productive and more fuel efficient than the ag tractors they are replacing. Operators are safe and comfortable in a climate-controlled cab equipped with an air ride suspension seat and ergonomic armrest mounted controls.
612 Skidder
The new Tigercat 612 Skidder is designed to excel in tight selective harvesting applications. The grapple skidder is the second variation to be built on the 612 platform after the release of the European-focused 612 dual winch skidder earlier this year.
The 612 skidder includes an oscillating centre section and optional blade tongs. The oscillating centre section narrows the stance of the machine, allowing for easier navigation through tight
stands. The optional blade tongs offer more versatility for decking wood and other secondary duties.
The 612 is equipped with the Tigercat FPT N67 Stage V engine, delivering 208 hp,
and is equipped with the manufacturer’s efficient drive system.
The cab is spacious with clear sightlines, and the air ride suspension seat is climate controlled and fully
adjustable. Turnaround provides increased comfort and easy entry from either side of the machine. The operator enjoys full control of all functions in any position within the 220-degree range.
Air Burners has recently introduced CharBoss, the world's first mobile onsite biochar production system. Worldwide, 70 million tons of wood waste is accumulated annually, but only 48 per cent is recycled. CharBoss aims to improve upon recycling rates, while ensuring less wood waste makes its way to the landfill.
After a successful debut at the University of Idaho Experimental Forest in January 2023 and last month's biochar production demonstration in Harrisonburg, Virginia, the world's first mobile onsite biochar production system is ready and able to tackle demanding jobs without the need for grinding, hauling or permanent facilities.
Air Burners has also partnered with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service to boost the power, speed and technology of the self-contained CharBoss.
CharBoss accepts whole trees, logs, root balls, slash piles, invasive shrubs and other unwanted biomass debris. It can burn 1 ton per
hour, leaving behind 20 per cent biochar, a valuable carbon-rich residual to sell or return to the soil.
The fully assembled above-ground air curtain burner system is an advanced pollution-control device scientifically proven to eliminate wood waste 40 times faster than open burning and significantly reduce particulate matter, like black carbon smoke.
The patented air curtain burner system separates charcoal during the burning process, creating less particulate matter, and uses a conveyor belt to separate and purge the Biochar from the burner. As a result, the marketable Biochar restores the soil by improving water and nutrient retention, improving forest health and restoration, and helping farmers extend vegetation growth.
"The biochar could be used to augment the soil organic matter, increase water and nutrient holding capacity. That could be beneficial to farmers," said Jim
Archuleta, USDA Regional Wood Innovations Coordinator.
