History of Slovakia - some important historic events The first signs of settlement of today's territory of Slovakia are already known from the Paleolithic. During the Iron Age in Slovakia Celts came and we can talk about the first


historically known ethnic group in Slovakia. Because we belong to the Slavs, we should say that the Slavs came to our territory during the 5th and 6th centuries. In the 6th century the Slavs got under the rule of the nomadic tribes of Avars, but their cruelty led to rebellions among the Slavs. In the 7th century / 623 - 658 / the Sam´s Empire was created, in which the king became French merchant / trader / Samo. In the first half of the 9th century two principalities were created Moravian and Nitra (Vráble - the town is located near Nitra). In 833, these principalities were united and the Great Moravia was founded in the northern part of the Carpathians. The famous princes were Mojmír, Svätopluk, Pribina, Rastislav. During the reign of Svätopluk Great Moravia achieved the greatest development. Great Moravia disappeared in 906. Cyril and Method influenced the development of Slavonic culture. Before coming to Moravia (862), they created the Glagolika, the first alphabet used to write books. In the 11th century, Slovakia became part of the Hungarian state. Families Arpads, Huňady, Jagel, ruled here. From the 16th century Slovakia and Hungary were part of the Habsburg monarchy. From the monarchs we can mention Maria Theresia and her son Joseph known reforms. Juro Jánošík, famous Slovak outlaw is known from this period - 17th - 18th century. We know a lot of legends about him. Ľudovít Štúr was the leader of the Slovak National Revival in the 19th century. He was the author of the Slovak language standard which became the basis of the literary language in Slovakia. Other personalities from this period are also known: Jozef Miloslav Hurban and Michal Miloslav Hodža. Austria-Hungary was created in 1866 and Slovakia was part of it. It broke down in 1918 and the Czechoslovak Republic was founded. After 1918 Slovakia had precise borders and Bratislava became the capital. During 2nd World War Czechoslovakia lost its integrity and fell apart. In 1944, the Slovak National Uprising broke out against the entry of the Nazis into Slovakia. After the 2nd World War , Czechoslovakia was established. The Slovak Republic was established on 1 January 1993.


Slovakia became a member of the EU in 2004. Bratislava is the capital city.

Sights in Slovakia We have a lot of historical sights, castles, mansions, ruins, monuments in Slovakia. Also at our school we often organise trips to various historic places, we get to know life of our ancestors in past. We will talk about some of the most beautiful and the most interesting sights in this book. Bratislava castle is the main castle in the capital city of Slovakia. It is huge rectangular building with four corner towers and it lies on isolated rocked hill of Small Carpatia right above the river Danube in the middle of Bratislava. Because of its size and location it has been dominant feature of the town for the centuries. From the castle it is beautiful overlook in Bratislava, Austria and under clean weather also parts of Hungary.

Spiš castle are only ruins of the castle with large area, it is one of the biggest castle complex in Slovakia. It rises above the small town called Spišské Podhradie in Košice region in Eastern Slovakia. The castle is national cultural sight.

Nitra castle The castle is located in the city Nitra 20 km from our town Vrable. The Castle is located on the hill in the centre of town. In the 8th century there was created Nitra principality. After integration of Nitra principality to Great Moravia the city became the seat of Princes Pribina, Rastislav, Svätopluk. The dominant of the castle is the St. Emeram´s Cathedral. Now there is the residence of bishop. The monument of Milan Rastislav Štefanik


This monument is memorial place - symbolic monument of Milan Rastislav Štefanik situated in Bradlo Hill. You can find it near Trnava town in Western Slovakia. Milan Rastislav Štefanik (21.7.1880 – 4.5.1919) became famous astronomer, military pilot, French general and he is one of the most known personalities of Slovak history. He was an important person in the founding of Czechoslovakia. The monument was designed by the architect Dusan Jurkovic and it is inscribed in the UNESCO list of monuments.
