It gives me great pleasure to be part of the Malaysian Higher Education 4.0 Seminar, 2018. I commend the organizing committee for successfully hosting this event. This event marks a promising collaboration and networking between institutions of higher learning education and educational technological experts in Malaysia.

Malaysian Higher Education 4.0 Seminar, 2018, has brought together participants from various institutions to consider the themes of “Enabling Learning Beyond Boundaries” respectively from different perspectives and approaches. I hope that all participants will take full advantage of this platform and the diversity of experiences to not only share knowledge; but also more importantly to debate on issues related to online learning. I believe that active involvement in the teaching and learning as well as exploring innovative approaches are essential ingredients in preparing the educators to face challenges in this new digital era.

Assalamualaikum & Salam Sejahtera It is my pleasure and honor to welcome all speakers and participants to the Malaysian Higher Education 4.0 Seminar, 2018. Congratulations to Institut Pendidikan Neo (iNED), UiTM for its initiative and effort to make this event possible.

The theme of this seminar; “Enabling Learning Beyond Boundaries” is timely as UiTM embraces wholeheartedly the significance of online learning. It is definitely in line with UiTM’s mission to place the university on the global map. This seminar will serve as an avenue for scholars, researchers, technological experts and other education stakeholders to explore thoughts and ideas as well as tap into the experience of the distinguished speakers.

On this note, this seminar will be the platform to explore new directions and possibilities in the field of online learning.

Assalamualaikum & Salam Sejahtera Selamat Datang! Welcome to all participants of the Malaysian Higher Education 4.0 Seminar, 2018, organised by Institut Pendidikan Neo (iNED), UiTM. This seminar is held with the objective to bridge the gap between academia and knowledge of educational technology to enable learning beyond boundaries. Advances in technology especially educational innovations have created new possibilities, opening the way for greater opportunities and the need to empower stakeholders in the field of education with innovative ideas to bring teaching and learning to a greater height. I would like to urge all participants to highlight issues pertaining online education, take the opportunity to enhance collaborative efforts to identify best practices and optimize resources as we prepare for the challenges of 21st century education.

Datin Paduka Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah Tapsir Director-General Higher Education Ministry

Datin Professor Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah bt Tapsir is currently the Director General, of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Malaysia. Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah is a Civil Engineer by training and had worked in Malaysia and US before joining Universiti Teknologi Malaysia as a Dean inyear 2001. She was later appointed as a Deputy Vice-Chancellor incharge of Academic and Internationalisation, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), from year 2006-2009. She is also a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers, Malaysia; Professional Engineer, Board of Engineers, Malaysia; an Associate Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers; and an Honorary Member of the Golden Key International Honour Society, USA. Among the awards and distinctions she received are Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Award (MCIEA 2009) (R&D); Excellence Service Award, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (2002 and 2008); Woman of the Year Award (2005) for Selangor State, Malaysia; Lady Engineers Award (1st Recipient), Institute of Engineers Malaysia (2005); and an European Union Grant of RM600,000 for research on “Time-Dependent Deformation of Masonry” (1992-1996). She is also a Visiting Professor at Heibei Normal University, Heibei, China (2008-2011), a Visiting Professor at Hebei University, Hebei, China (2008-present); and a Visiting Professor at Beihang University, Beijing, China (2008-2009). Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah has written numerous books and publications both national and international level.

Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan Said Vice Chancellor, Universiti Teknologi MARA

Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr Hassan Said is currently the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

Prior to this appointment, he was the Vice Chancellor and President of Taylor’s University. He was appointed as the Director General of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia from January 2005 until April 2008. He was also the Director, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education Malaysia, a position he held since May 1998 before his appointment as the Director General.

He obtained his - Bachelor degree in Mathematics from the University of Manchester, UK in 1979 - Master of Science from Brunel University, UK in 1981 and - PhD from Brunel University UK in 1984 – area specialisation is Computer Aided Geometric Design.

He joined Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1984 as a lecturer in Mathematics at the School of Mathematical Sciences, and was later appointed Dean of the school in 1990. He was then appointed as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the university in1995, before being seconded to the Ministry of Education in 1998 as the Director of the Department of Higher Education. Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr Hassan has been appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of various local public and private universities, and council members of various local and international bodies including the Governing Board Member of the South-East Asia Minister of Education for the Regional Centre of Higher Education (SEAMEO-RIHED) from 1999-2008. He currently sits as a member of the Board of Directors of Asia e University (AeU), and Chairman, Board of Directors, Kolej Universiti Islam Perlis. He is also a board member of the Security Commission Malaysia (SC) and also in its Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF) Board. He was a member of the National Higher Education Council (MPTN), and currently is heading the Science and Mathematics Cluster of the National Professorial Council (MPN). He is a Fellow of the Malaysian Mathematical Society, Fellow Institute of Mathematical and Its Applications, United Kingdom (FIMA) and Fellow Academy Science of Malaysia (FASc). Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr Hassan has received a number of Federal and State Honours, including JMN (Federal), DPMP (Perlis), DMSM (Melaka), DSPN (Penang), PGBK (Sarawak) and DPMK (Kelantan). He has also received the Chevalier de l’ Ordre National du Merite Award from the Government of France.

Professor Sr. Ir. Dr. Suhaimi Abd. Talib

Honorary Professor, Faculty of Civil Engineering, UiTM, MALAYSIA Suhaimi Abdul-Talib, joined Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), formerly known as Institut Teknologi Mara (ITM) in 1988. He received his B.E (Hons) in Civil Engineering in 1986 at the University of Melbourne, Australia. In 1996 he obtained his Master of Science in Water and Environmental Management with Distinction at University of Loughborough, UK and in 2002 he completed his Ph.D. in Water and Wastewater Engineering at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He currently holds the position of Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, UiTM. Prior to retiring in January 2018 he had served UiTM in various capacities including Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Assistant Vice Chancellor (Facilities Development and Management and ICT) and Assistant Vice Chancellor (Puncak Alam and Puncak Perdana Campus), as well as various posts of leadership within the Faculty of Civil Engineering. He is still involved in teaching courses associated with Civil Engineering Programs at UiTM. Apart from teaching he is still very much involved in supervision of student projects at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral levels. He is currently a Visiting Professor at UTHM and an External Examiner for the Environmental Engineering Program at Politeknik Sultan Idris Shah. He had been a Visiting Professor and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Heidelberg University of Applied Sciences, Germany and at the University of New South Wales, Australia respectively. As a researcher he had acquired research grants totalling more than RM 2 million and had published and presented more than 200 papers. He had delivered more than 50 keynote and invited lectures. He has an extensive experience in development, review and management of curriculum for engineering and non-engineering programmes. He has served as member panel and later as lead panel for engineering accreditation for both the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) and Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) since 2004. He was later appointed as Member to the EAC for the session 2008-2010. He was appointed as a member of the Expert Panel for the drafting of Standard on Engineering and Engineering Technology Programmes and also appointed as a member to the Accreditation Committee at the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).

Furthermore he was appointed as one of the members to the consultant team that developed the rating instruments SETARA2017 (University and University Colleges), Polyrate (Malaysian Polytechnics), myQuest (Colleges) and mySPeKK (Community Colleges).Apart from the various management positions held during his service with UiTM, he had been involved in Governance and Policy making through his involvement in various Boards and Councils, such as, Chairman for the Boards of Directors for UiTM Private Education Sdn. Bhd. and Akari Software Asia Pacific Sdn. Bhd.; Member of Board of Governors for Malaysian Institute of Supply Chain Innovation (MISI); Alternate Member of Board of Directors for Multimedia Technology Enhancement Operations Sdn. Bhd. (METEOR) and Alternate Member for the Malaysia Examination Council.

Professor Dr. Ganakumaran Subramaniam Head of School (UNMC) Education, University of Nottingham

Ganakumaran Subramaniam holds a B.Ed. from Universiti Putra Malaysia. He read for his Masters of Arts and Ph.D. in the University of Nottingham, UK. He is a Fulbright Scholar with attachments in New York city, Washington, D.C and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Currently he is the Head of School and Associate Professor at the School of Education, University of Nottingham, Malaysia campus. He is also the Executive Director of the Bangladesh College Education Development Project, which aims at improving the quality and standards of the higher education sector in Bangladesh. Before joining the University of Nottingham, he was Deputy Director of International Relations at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He is the President of the Malaysian English Language Teaching Association and Vice President of AsiaTEFL. He advises on panels with the National Curriculum Development Division, the National Trust School programme, the National Teaching English Language and Literacy programme and Textbook Division. In 2012, he was appointed to the National Council of English Language Standards and Quality.

Professor Dr. Michael James Keppell

Pro Vice-Chancellor, and Professor, Learning and Teaching,Taylor’s University Before commencing at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus, Michael was Pro Vice-Chancellor, Learning Transformations at Swinburne University, Executive Director and Professor, Australian Digital Futures Institute at University of Southern Queensland and Professor of Higher Education and Director, The Flexible Learning Institute at Charles Sturt University. Prior to this, he has a long professional history in higher education in Australia, Canada and Hong Kong and has worked at six different universities. His research and practice focuses on personalised learning, learning design, digital futures, learning spaces, blended learning, authentic assessment and leadership using design-based research. He was the first Australian to be elected to the Board of the Open Education Consortium and is a Life Member of ASCILITE. Michael’s primary focus is increasing the quality of learning and teaching across all modes of teaching (face-to-face, blended and online). He transforms practice by inspiring, enabling and empowering teaching staff to develop capacity and capability in innovative teaching and learning.

His expertise centres on curriculum design, innovative learning design of blended and online learning environments, educational technology, global partnerships and authentic assessment for large-scale transformations. Michael has a Doctor of Philosophy (Curriculum and Instruction specialising in Instructional Design) and a Master of Education (Curriculum and Instruction specialising in Physical Education) from The University of Calgary, a Bachelor of Education (Postgraduate) and a Bachelor of Human Movement Studies (Education) from The University of Queensland. Prof Mike Keppell will oversee four units under INTELLECT, namely Teaching & Education Development (TED), eLearning Academy (eLA), Student Development and Student Success Centre (SSC).
