The Trim, Load on the Frog, and Hoof Shape The trim is one of the most important aspects of shoeing, no matter what medium is being used (composite shoes or metal shoes.) Some people forgo the shoes altogether, however many horses cannot maintain nice hooves unless they wear some form of prosthetic. Horses never evolved to be ridden, and breeders and riders alike do not always make the wisest choices in selecting function versus form in a horse.
