Philosophy and Belief

MISSION STATEMENT

St. Paul’s Episcopal School is committed to providing the highest quality college preparatory education in a Christian environment. Through a variety of experiences and activities, we encourage individual growth and achievement. By example, the St. Paul’s community fosters respect, integrity, responsibility, service, tolerance, and the highest moral standards to prepare the whole person for a changing and challenging future. St. Paul’s Episcopal School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. St. Paul’s seeks to create an opportunity for the individual student to realize his or her own potential in all aspects of life by making available a variety of learning experiences and activities. Our commitment to providing the highest quality college preparatory education in a Christian environment is based on the belief that it is important to: • Educate the whole student spiritually, academically, civically, socially, physically, and emotionally; • Provide an education rooted in Christian principles as understood and interpreted by the Episcopal Church;

Implement a carefully formulated curriculum and accepted learning methodologies which recognize and address individual differences and needs;

• Encourage a respect for and appreciation of learning and knowledge;

Maintain an atmosphere in which each student can develop a sense of individual worth and formulate a code of moral values based on Christian ethics;

• Offer a variety of educational and extracur ricular programs and encourage participation in school, social and community endeavors;

Promote an environment that embraces, respects and teaches tolerance and appreciation for cultural, ethnic, religious and racial differences within our community;

FROM THE HEADMASTER Dear St. Paul’s Family, The Annual Report for 20112012 is our way of saying thank you for your support and commitment to St. Paul’s Episcopal School. The contributions you have made are appreciated, and we are humbled by your confidence. Our school is mission-centered, and the statement issued by the original Board of Trustees is still alive and vibrant today. It has been affirmed by the reaccreditation report we received last year from the Southern Association of Independent Schools stating that St. Paul’s is “a great example of a child centered school.” We teach the individual student, and the whole student, through the four pillars of our school: Academics, Spirituality, Athletics and the Arts. We encourage our students to flourish and perform at high levels in all areas, becoming the people they are meant to be—scholars, artists, athletes, and community activists through faith. We are St. Paul’s because of the engaged faculty and staff who teach, learn, and live our mission statement. We strive to give every student the opportunity to succeed, build skills, confidence, and relationships

that will allow them to apply the knowledge and understanding they receive as St. Paul’s Saints. The learning going on in our classrooms and labs, on the stage, in our community and on our playing fields is important and life altering. The St. Paul’s experience is what our students will carry with them for the rest of their lives. We are preparing our students for the challenges that await them in the 21st Century. Our one to one technology initiative, an actively evolving and ever changing curriculum, or the willingness of our students to collaborate and communicate with each other and their faculty, enables St. Paul’s students to acquire the skills necessary to succeed, regardless of what field they choose to enter. the foundation FOR our futurE The St. Paul’s Episcopal School Foundation, Inc. seeks to continually strengthen endowments through philanthropic means. An endowment links past, current, and future generations allowing St. Paul’s to make commitments far into the future, knowing that resources to meet those commitments will continue to be available. The total endowment funds as of May 31, 2012 equal $1,693,497.

Foundation Endowment Funds An endowment fund is created when a donation is given to the St. Paul’s Episcopal School Foundation to serve as a perpetual legacy that can honor or memorialize an individual loved one or an entire family. The endowment fund remains intact in perpetuity, while its earnings support a purpose chosen by the donor. Although naming opportunities begin at $20,000, gifts of any amount are welcome. Donors may direct their gifts to an existing fund or to the school’s general endowment fund.

Established Funds: general endowment Fund The General Endowment is a long term investment that generates an unrestricted income to allow for financial discretion and flexibility in building a quality academic experience for all students. Contributions come from estate plans, unrestricted memorials and gifts to the endowment otherwise not designated for a specific named fund. accumulation Fund Established by the Foundation By-Laws to hold designated funds until they reach $20,000 or naming status. The Peggy Ellis Memorial Scholarship was started by Margaret Boland Ellis in memory of her daughter Margaret “Peggy” Ellis Campbell ’78. Peggy was a member of the first cross country and track state championship teams that won St. Paul’s first state championships in

1976. When this fund is endowed it will benefit a deserving student who is an asset to the St. Paul’s cross country and track teams. The Helmsing Scholarship Fund was established by Frederick G. Helmsing. The Fund when fully endowed will provide financial assistance to qualified and deserving students. The Patricia Marsh Memorial Scholarship was started by the family of Patricia Marsh in her memory to provide financial assistance when endowed to a student with a special interest in the arts. The Community Service Fund was started by the St. Paul’s Board of Trustees in honor of Mrs. Leslie Lerner’s successful Community Service Program and its six month build of the Habitat for Humanity House in 2010. When endowed, the fund’s earnings will support the School’s Community Service Program. Alumni Scholarship Fund Established for general financial purposes to assist in the education of a deserving and qualified child of an alumnus who would not otherwise be able to attend St. Paul’s. Dawson Faculty Excellence Fund Established by Catherine and Dudley Dawson to provide a monetary stipend annually to a deserving faculty member in recognition of teaching excellence. Faculty Development Fund Established to provide stipends and financial assistance when endowed for the continuing education and development of the School’s faculty members. Contributions to the Natalie Newman Memorial Fund were designated to this Fund by her parents, Debra and Don Newman. Natalie was a member of the Class of 1997 and possessed a strong love of learning. Frank Winter Hardie Memorial Award Fund Established by the Hardie Family in memory of Frank Winter Hardie ’98 who died in December 2007 at age 28 of a rare incurable cancer. Frank’s family has chosen to remember him with an annual award to be given to an Upper or Middle

School teacher, coach or staff member whose contributions have inspired ordinary students and athletes to be outstanding people. This endowed award is intended to supplement the recipient’s salary. Robert G. Kendall Scholarship Fund Established in memory of Judge Robert G. Kendall to provide financial assistance to qualified students, with special consideration to minority students. This award is given to students who possess the requisite skills, aptitude, abilities and desire to succeed in the course of study they are pursuing at St. Paul’s Episcopal School and meet the financial assistance requirements. John McGehee Memorial Fund Established by Dottie McGehee and family in memory of Dr. John McGehee. The Fund will provide financial assistance to a qualified and deserving student. Max Emery Miller and Marguerite Galloway Miller Scholarship Fund Established by the Laidlaw Foundation and the Miller family to provide financial assistance to a qualified and deserving student. Alex Parkman Memorial Fund Established by Carlos and Harold Parkman in 1990 in memory of their son, Alex Parkman, Class of 1988. The Fund will give financial assistance to a qualified and deserving student. William Bradshaw Radcliff Scholarship Fund Established by Daré and Donny Radcliff, in memory of their son, William Bradshaw Radcliff, Class of 2005, who died in November, 2002, while a sophomore at St. Paul’s. This award is given annually to the best all-around boy or girl in the junior class who best represents the lively spirit, values, and academic accomplishments that William demonstrated during his lifetime. Robert H. Rutledge Faculty Chair of Excellence Fund Established by the Board of Trustees in 2006 in recognition of Bob Rutledge’s

success as both coach and administrator upon his retirement as headmaster. The Fund, when endowed, will be the first endowed teaching chair, the proceeds from which will enhance the School’s ability to attract the best professional to hold that position and free up operating funds to be used for other purposes. Chad Saucier Memorial Scholarship Fund Established by Dr. Scott Saucier and Ms. Rita Saucier in memory of their son, Chad Saucier, Class of 1992. A scholarship is given annually to a rising senior who exhibits the qualities of respect, integrity, responsibility, service, tolerance, and the highest moral standards, who has a strong belief in and promotes the alcohol free and drug free policies of the School, and who is considered a role model by his peers and by the faculty and administration of the School. The Chad Saucier Memorial Scholarship was awarded this year to rising senior Kennedy Studdard.
